Horrible teacher, stay away!!!!!!!!!
To sum it all up, you are a lazy community college student, he wrote the course textbook and has a PHD. He will continue to remind you of these things the entire semester. STAY AWAY!!!!!!!
Awesome teacher. My easiest and most comprehensible honors class ever. Elaborates greatly and helps generously. He was oustanding to me. No complaints at all.
i worst teacher i ever have. do not take his class. you will not get C
Don't take this his class.
He moved too fast for me to take any notes, so I concentrated on listening closely to his lectures (which were actually pretty interesting) and got along with a C. I also had him for world religion. You won't get away with falling asleep, but if you just pay attention he isn't a bad professor at all....
The man lectured on things that were not in the book and his test questions will confuse the hell out of you. Very unfriendly, no extra credit and he chooses his favoriyes from day one. Stay away and choose Colvert instead!!!!!!
the worst person and teacher i have ever seen. the tests are hard. you will not learn anything. do not take him. he will ruin your life, time, money. not recommended for any class for anything. i caould not find any word that suits to describe him best. avoid avoid avoid. though you are getting A in all subjects, you will fail this class. i am sure
Was confused the whole time. Never figured out what he was talking about. Showed up for each claas, read the book, took notes and nothing helped. Got A's in every class I took, got a D in this one. Stay Away
He was by far the worst professor i have ever had, his test are ridiculous and confusing i wouldnt take him again even if my life depended on it. he was HORRIBLE .

don't listen to these lazy kids. come to class and take notes and youll passs. he's test are mind numbingly easy
Could be a great professor if only he weren't so scared of his students and could cease his obvious contempt for them. He want to just lecture without really engaging anyone in the class. His tests were awful and the text books he requires were useless. There is no excuse for a professor who fails to say what he means and mean what he says.
If you ever want to be confused in a class, then this professsor is who you are looking for.
This professor is the worst I have ever taken. His test do not reflect anything he teaches in class. He is confusing and boring. I do not know how he is still at BCC. Everyone who has ever taken him says he is horrible.
I took the class, dispite the warning from other students. I'm not lazy and had to work hard for my 4.0 .This guy's lectures are intresting but his test are confusing and not very clear. Please donot take this professor, remember you were warned!!!!!!!!.
Just took my second test for this class and I give up. Studied for two weeks for this test. This guy does not elaborate on anything, and this is a subject where elaboration in laymens terms is key. The tests are confusing and the lectures suck. Stay away!!
I love philosophy with all my heart but this professor ruined it for me. he blabs abd blabs on and appears to be caught in his own alternative universe. Study all you want but i doubt you'll pass unless you can drift into jis world. HONESTLY, BCC CAN DO BETTER!!!!!!!
Shouldn't be teaching! He should be on a island alone far far away from people and society, he's that bad.I took the course over the summer, flexible learning. We had four exams, open book/notes and I don't know anyone that passed any test with a C or higher, DO NOT TAKE HIM, TOTAL PRICK! Makes PHI a total nightmare, "Professor Rieger, retire"!
He's a horrible teacher. You should avoid taking his class! That's all I can say about him.
Get out fast, this class is so incredibly boring and he is so monotone its not even funny.
I thought he was a cutie!!! his class was really hard but if you pretend to have a good time he might go easy on you.
He's very boring to listen to but he knows his stuff. I also had him for PHI 2010 (the flexible learning course). For the philosophy class there was a lot of reading but the tests were open book. I don't know why any other reviewer hasn't emphasized that. How hard can an open book test be? In logic, as long as you study in the book you'll do fine.
Excellent Professor. This is one of those guys who sends you off with more than just a letter grade; you'll leave the class with a new perspective of the world. Strict toward the beginning, but once he knows you are interested, he lightens up. Before u leave this college, DEFINITELY TAKE HIM!!!
I really don't know what these people are talking about. This professor and open book test?!! Really! This professor is unreasonable, unlikeable and extremely crazy. WHILE TEACHING he goes into a world of his own,if you're a SANE person, it's hard to follow him to his world. PEOPLE I'M AN ACTUAL STUDENT OF HIS AND SO ARE MY OTHER 6 FRIENDS. AVOID!
I got a "D" in his logic lass. However, I would recommend his class to others. He goes over all of the info. If you attend class and do the HW assignments you will do well in his class. I failed myself, by not doing the HW assignments which actually will help with the exams and understanding the lectures.
he comes across as a disorginized kinda guy, but he's fair, his class was easy for me (i like lectures) and all the tests where challenging, yet fairly easy, due to the fact that if you read the material, you where safe.
Beware! This guy is something else. He wasnt really hard, just annoying. His voice is very monotone and he's extremely boring. Although his tests are open book, you're better off not using them- they don't help at all. He can tell if you're not into his class and will show you with rude comments and smart remarks. Pick another teacher if possible!!
Excellent professor. If you are really interested in philosophy then this is the guy you want as an instructor. But just as with any class you have to work for your grade. The tests are easy if you have read what you were assigned. I highly recommend Dr. Rieger
is he still there?it sems that bcc can not find anyone else that is why he still there.
Very smart and funny. His class is pretty easy, consisting of about three tests, all of which are open book. I received no homework assignments. I loved this class and this Professor.
He is the worst philosophy teachear i ever had!do not take this class!!!He will make you hate phi.
Some teachers coddle their students and hold their hands through the learning process. Professor Rieger does not! I am very glad that I took his class, because philosophy can be a difficult subject to grasp. His class inadvertently taught me how to learn and comprehend things on my own.
Speaks in a slow mono tone voice. Flexible learning class met only 5 times. Exams based entirely on what he covered in class. The text book was outdated and confusing, the videotepes were dated as they referred to current events of the 80's. Allows the use of handwritten notes during exams, was fair, allowed extra credit for better grade.
he's a good teach he's nice. he does have amono tone but only for a second. u actually wanna listen to what he says and participate.
Professor Rieger is not monotone - he is interesting and he makes philosophy interesting. You end up leaving the class-questioning about questions in life, and you talk to someone - you question their purposes and their why to being a certain way.Easy test - you can use your notes and the book. Thanks professor for making philosophy a little easier!
He states it before class that attendance is your choice. He wont even bother with you if you dont attend. He gives only one assignment which is the Gordon Rule assignment. Complete that as well as his open book exams, you will be able to pass his class. However, his exams involve a bit of trickery.
I recieved a B in this class only because I studied A LOT! The quizes are not too much on what is read in the book, its mostly about his lecture. He allows you to use your book or notes SOMETIMES when taking a test. If you do not read the book and study the notes you WILL fail. Make sure to take notes during his lecture that is the most HELPFUL!
If you really want to learn the subject, take Rieger's class. He has a PhD in the subject! Not an easy class by any stretch of the imagination, though. His tests are difficult but he offers extra credit in certain circumstances. He does have a really monotne voice and has a very dry sense of humor but really knows the subject.
Ok I won't knock on his teaching much. Maybe it was the fact that it was an evening class I took. But I didnt really enjoy myself with the class. My class only ended up only having 5 sessions for the whole semester. I got Ds on the chapter exams, but somehow passed the final with an A or B, go figure
When taking this professors class, be sure to pay attention or you might miss something important. His speeches are a little monotonous/asinine. But he can be interesting at points.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM IF YOU CAN...The class is very very boring.
DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER IF YOU WANT TO TAKE ETHICS. HE IS RIDICULOUS. TAKE ETHICS AT SOME OTHER CAMPUS IF POSSIBLE.PLEASE.HE IS THE WORST.
Just plainly put, middle of the road across the board, almost impossible at times to stay awake or not run out of the class due a terrible case of mind mush. I thought my grade should have been higher of course and maybe it would of if he kept me interested.
Anyone that has given this professor a bad rating obviously doesn't know what a good professor is. He is honestly one of the best I have ever had. He's SUPER nice and helpful. His class is not hard, I barely studied EVER, and I would recommend him to anyone I know. Compared to all the other philosophy/religion teachers he's the BEST.
WOW such a waste of time & money!I purchased two books a set of dvds.Exams"WERE NOT" based on anything u bought for class.4exams. The only way to make a "B" OR "A" is to cheat. donot listhen to the other reviews because they cheated for their grades
He has the most boring lectures I have ever had to listen to! His test really hard, even if you read the book cover to cover and watched all the DVDs! DONT TAKE HIM!! IT'S NOT WORTH IT!!
o boy i hate giving bad ratings but i can't simply think of anything good to say. I was actually really interested in philosophy prior to this class, but his long boring lectures almost made me drop out, i was just grateful that i only had to attend class 5 times in the whole semester.
I don't know why he has all these bad ratings, but he's a great teacher. Very fair and a great lecture. However, you're not a lecture person than don't take him because thats all he does. Open book test, what more can you ask? His REL2300 is NOT open book
Whoever gives this teacher a bad rating probably dislikes lecture classes and philosophy. I enjoyed Rieger's class, some of his lectures can drag but he always tries to bring up interesting topics and MAKES YOU THINK. Take alot of notes and study them if you want to do well on the tests. Overall i definitely recommend him, he knows his stuff.
Excellent speaker - very eloquent. Very knowledgeable. Come to class prepared and having read your chapters, you will learn and you will get a good grade. Exams are clear and there are some extra credit options available.
Indeed, he goes off into his own world while teaching, but it's so much fun to follow him there while the rest of the class looks as if they are seeing an alien freak evolving. If you like strange professors, take him! Be receptive of strangeness and balance receptivity with your own input of a manifold nature.
This is not a bad class by any means he knowledge of the material is incredible makes you think a bit. The lectures are boring you might fall asleep and the course is a mix of what is said and reading of the textbooks. but he is straight just pay attention and read.
Amazing teacher, Amazing at explaining the material, very knowledgeable in this area. But yes, as everyone else says, it is SOOOOO boring. But that is simply because i could care less about this ethical theorists.... Iam glad i took this professor though, open book tests. MAKE SURE YOU READ THE TEXTBOOK..... IT SUCKS BUT IT'lL HELP! :].
My ABSOLUTE favorite professor during my time at Broward. Not an easy class by any means, but an enjoyable one, especially if you are interested in philosophy. Dr. Rieger is a character of his own. A rare find. If you enjoy professors who love what they teach, and you are willing to work, take him. If you're looking for an easy A, stay away.
You have to put effort into this class, but I highly recommend this prof. Blended class only meets 6 times, 6 exams, and 1 easy paper. Read the chapters and take GOOD notes, tests are open book. Drove up from S Brow and def worth the trip! Got an A!!
Both teacher and class are boring and confusing and he doesn't offer help. I didn't care much for his attitude either. Tests are pretty much your only chances at scoring points so fail those and you fail the class. Textbook is definitely used and needed.
This professor is quite boring but so what? It could be worse, his class could be hard and boring but its not. Just listen to lectures and take notes. When you read the book refer back to your lecture notes and elaborate more on what he lectured about. Test are open notes so take great notes and you should pass with flying colors.
This professor is absolutely terrible! I took philosophy thinking that it would be very interesting, he changed my mind real quick! I had to get up every classroom in the middle of the lecture to throw water on my face to wake up! He doesn't make philosophy interesting AT ALL! I wish i would of went on rate my professor before taking this class.
I didn't care much for the class, and the instructor seemed kind of offensive in a way to me, but that's besides the point. The bookstore, gave me the wrong books and then we had to wait for awhile for the right book and when they finally came in. I was unaware, that the class was mainly an online class and that we were only to meet every so often
I did not enjoy this class at all. I failed the class and if you take this class you will understand. Professor Rieger is not a bad professor, but his lectures are very boring. Philosphy is very very boring and dry! I could not get interested in the class. Be prepared to read and take a lot of notes. The final exam was 2 parts on 2 different days.
Very knowledgeablefriendly prof; great class discussions; four 1-2 pg papers (3 are passfail); no. of exams vary dependent on how much material covered; no cumulative final exam; openbook exams; buy the books (esp. Pojman text if none else); attend class because note-taking is highly recommended for passing exams (or likely get C's and D's).
I learn some interesting things about the different cultures and their religion. The class really did benefit me. Enjoyed the class. Reading is a must, there is a take home exam and a bonus exam :)
This is a very boring class! Very long dry lectures! A lot of reading and note taking! Very strict professor! I would avoid taking his class. I failed it, because there was a 2 part final exam and I did not take the second part which was a 2 page essay. I did not like this class at all and don't take it if you don't have too.
He's an okay professor. A little bit of a strange personality, but he has a good sense of humor and is willing to help you. Not that many graded assignments at all. It's a very good idea to participate in his classes.
The books required for this course is required and trust me you'll be mad at yourself if you don't buy the books especially when it's time for an exam because he allows you to use your books during your exams. BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO READ AND TAKE NOTES! Only 3-4 homework assignments. He lectures a lot so pay attention and take notes but still read.
He was not helpful when I asked him questions. He told me to figure it out myself. He speaks in a circular pattern, not really explaining things and sometimes confuses himself which confused me further. Do not take this class with this professor
He is a very smart man but I don't think that he realizes that we don't need so much information . He assigns four books and expects you to do all of the reading at home which is unrealistic. This class is more of a graduate level class not a 1000 level class. Find someone else who will actually teach and share notes, not one who will talk down
I had fun in this class overall. He does lecture hard and practically had a test every day I saw him but they weren't hard. You have to be in the class if you want to pass. He'll basically lecture information that tends to be on the test for the next class. Thank God, that he allows you to use your textbook during the exam nevertheless.
He is the first step to the real world in the sense that he doesn't play around and will let your own lack of diligence be your downfall. If you don't read get ready to fail. If you think this is a stare at the wall and the minimal information passing through will get you an A, get ready to fail. Take the class seriously and you'll actually pass.
No grade updates on D2L, turns in graded assignments whenever he feels like it. He surely doesnt believe in lecture slides, he reads off Historical Papers.
If you read what you have to read and listen/ take notes during lectures, youll be fine. He gave open book exams too. The conversations were very interesting and so was the class. It was also funny at times. He doesnt put grades into D2L though and he has you keep track of your own test scores etc.
he is really monotone and very boring I took his 3 hour class and I do not recommend most professors let you have activities to keep you engaged he does not and he doesn't really know how to keep a class hooked
Please don't take his class. The only thing he does is lecture and he talks in circles. Then when you ask him a question, he can never say what the answer is, it'll always "either or." Then on the test you're not sure what answer to put. Horrible teacher, horrible examples, horrible in general.
Professor Rieger can be sarcastic at times and ask questions in a way to confuse you. There isn't much work just listen to the lectures and have a test the next class.
Lectures were boring, but he is a alright kind of professor. Class Grades is really Based on tests & one essay.
The way the teacher talks it's not understandable. very diffcult. Your not going to be able to focus.
His class is boring, you will fall asleep in his class. My friend did often, if you pay attention and listen to his long Lectures you will be all right. But dont take his class if you have options still
his class is long. if you take him you will fall asleep. his Tests are easy though
Not interesting what-so-ever some class discussions result in irritation Rambles on and on without drawing students in
This Professor was interesting to say the least. I initially read the reviews and it is true that he has a different style of teaching. While his lectures did drag on, I did relatively well in the class. There are a lot of exams but they r very easy, trust me. I passed with flying colors, just participate in lectures etc and you will be fine.
Professor is very monotone. I wish would have read these reviews before i had taken this class. Not to mention i dreaded it everyday it was nearly impossible to pay attention he talks in circles, he is very mean and sarcastic he will not allow you to ask questions (if he does he is going to answer with an analogy) leaving you stuck in the solar sy
This professor will talk in circles and lose the whole class! He is not sympathetic at all, no group chat is allowed in his class which is weird in during the virus. We created one anyways most students are receiving 70% on exams which most of your grade is dependent on these. Professor has no care in the world about students being confused.
Read this very carefully. This professor is HORRIBLE. He lectures and hes not very clear at all. He lectures as if your his colleague at Harvard. No student wants to be taught like that. We want to understand the information. Hes very petty and his word choice for certain things are unreal. He makes you feel stupid when you ask a question.
Hopefully your reading this review before you have signed up this class! This professor is miserable an arrogan he will make your life a living nightmare! He reads from the text no social interaction with students. He will lose all of your attention by default his lectures are not engaging to students and if you ask questions he will belittle you
Tough crowd here, but I can't say they're totally wrong. Very lecture heavy and very monotonous with a dash of sarcasm, but I found him to be clear, knowledgeable, and he never showed any disrespect like some others have said. Tests were based on class progress so we only took 3 (open notes and book) and 1 writing assignment so not a lot of work.
Very confusing professor, talks in analogies. Lectures through the whole 75 minute class, and asks students to answer questions that will leave you feeling dumb. All his exam averages were Cs. The only good part about this class was that every exam was open text. (4 exams and one paper)
HEAVY HEAVY LECTURE OMG.
Super lecture heavy, and he does have a pretty monotonous speaking style, if that's a huge issue for you, steer clear, otherwise it's not the end of the world. Your grade comes down entirely on exams. Do the reading, pay attention, you'll be fine. Don't agree that he's rude. Don't rudely interrupt, don't ask the same questions over and over.
If your idea of a good time is sitting in a class and listening for 75 minutes to whatever the ancient Greeks had to say with no discussion, you've come to the right professor. If that is not you, stay as far away as possible. There comes an point where an easy A is not worth the unending feeling of time wasting that you get from this class. Avoid.
I took the summer term class. He spends the entire class time reading out of a packet, the class was three hours and thirty minutes long. I loved the class in the beginning. After the first couple of classes, there was no more interactive conversation. His questions didn't make sense and paying attention in class became very difficult.
I love Philosophy and even took high school electives on it. However, this class did not make it enjoyable. The material is interesting but the professor's articulation was very broken up and he did not understand the questions you asked. However, you only have a couple easy quizzes and only one writing assignment that has a generous deadline.
He's an easy professor, and genuinely you could probably miss his classes and learn when the test dates are from classmates since most of the tests are on the book instead of his lectures. He's good for the credit, but if you actually want to learn about the subject (like humanities for me) he's not your best bet. Lectures are long and grueling.
Not an ideal class. Took the course for a humanities credit and it was simple enough to take the tests & complete one writing assignment. Very tedious lectures that you need to pay attention to. Difficult to talk to outside of the classroom. Some tests took material from the textbook directly; be sure to read. It's straightforward but not ideal.
I took this class last semester, got an A, thought he was boring but doable. Took him again for Ethics. It was the exact same class with the slightest differences touted as a different course. I lost all motivation and ended up skipping every class after the break. Needless to say, avoid like the plague.
This was my most boring class of the semester. Half the class is fighting falling asleep during lectures, as the info is not really informative. Used lost of analogies and what if's to explain the humanities. Has a quiz every week on the previous chapter which isn't too bad, but we were behind cause of long lectures.
took his class it was mostly lectures and watching a movie called saving private Ryan he gave out five test during the semester and they were based of the notes you looked during the lecture and the books. he was very nice and chill.
I will give the most accurate description: To be honest, he wasn't the worst. Yes, the class was boring, but he didn't give a lot of work. You have 5 tests and 1 essay to do. Just show up for the boring lectures abd listen and do the test and then you leave. Nothing extra.
This is the most boring and rude professor I have ever taken at Broward College. He reads out of a binder with notes about topics. Participation is lackluster, with only 1-3 students responding to his questions. If you have a phone call and need to take it, he tells you to leave the classroom and don't return. Please avoid him at all costs.
Constant lectures that don't matter. The lectures do not equate to the tests that are given. All of the tests get information from the book that the professor doesn't even mention. Never responds to emails and there is no variety in this class in terms of learning. You have to try very hard to stay awake.
Professor's lectures can be a slog, but tests are easy. Using Unstuck ai and the free textbook helped me stay engaged and do well. Worth taking for the credit.
very lecture-heavy but the material is interesting and not too hard to follow. the trick is to interact with him, ask questions, have discussions in class; when it's just him droning on you feel like you're about to to fall asleep. textbook is a must-have. overall the class is really not for everyone but is doable
He's just speaks the entire class and sparks discussions. He always goes 2 minutes over time class is supposed to end. A boring class, but it was easy to pass. I had him from August-December and he barely gave an assignments, mainly tests. They are usually open-note too. I barely paid attention. He's also very strict about use of electronics.
Prof Rieger is very lecture heavy, he doesn't do nothing but talk if you know or is interested about the topic then talk because the class would be fun if not, you'll fall asleep he doesn't give too much work just open book and note test on the computer. he's a nice man really just a bit old school.
Very very boring lectures. I would fight sleep during his class because he easily got off topic. Sometimes he would debate with the students about their perspectives instead of just teaching us the course materials. He took forever to grade the one paper we had, and he spoke very slow in a boring tone.
He lectures and is a great teacher. Take notes and you will pass tests. Really is a great class and I will take again if needed!
Take note and take notes and you will pass his tests, Great class and Great teacher.
Professor Rieger made Ethics a fun and comfortable environment. His lectures allowed the class to understand the topic better. Participation is not required, however, the class discussions are fun and allows students to understand the topic by using real world examples. Professor Rieger is a great teacher and will help you learn and perform well.
