His a great teacher. Makes you understand all assigments. Goes over any hw given. Essay and reponses are easy. His a nice, helpful, funny teacher. I will reccomend you take his class his great!! =]
Professor Ruiz is an excellent professor. Highly recommend him. His lectures are clear and he is very helpful. He is an attractive young professor, don't let this fool you. Takes his job seriously. Not an easy "A", will get the grade you deserve. Will overall learn to become a better writer. plus he's super funny and not bad to look at.

he is a great teacher. I loved going to his class. Reminded me of actor john cusack,
professor Ruiz is REALLY helpful! he makes sure everyone understands his lectures and hws that he gives. he makes you do weekly responses on the books, so make sure you read them. hes out-going personality puts you to ease but don't take that for granted. he'll definitely make you earn your grade. overall, hes a GREAT teacher! definitely recommend
this teacher was one uv the best teachers i have had in both svhool and college
professor Daniel Ruiz is a very attractive, charming and down to earth professor. He is very straight forward and lets you know what is intended to be done in class and is not a teacher with "surprises." Overall he is highly recommended on my part, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED BY HIS TEACHING NOR HIS LOOKS!!
obvious /b/tard is obvious.
Ruiz is a task master, and that's a good thing. His class was challenging but he communicated it in a manner both interesting and relevant to daily life. There were times where class discussions got off topic but even that was really worthwhile. Hyper-intelligent, very pleasant guy who respects his students. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
Professor Ruiz is really helpful to the students. he can be pretty tough when it comes to grading the essay. if you come to his office hours, it will REALLY helpful and you will pass English. He is really attractive and cute just my opinion :)
very good teacher
Professor Ruiz is very helpful and straight to the point. He is a very intelligent professor and knows what he is doing up there. Requires lot of dedication to get that A. However very interesting and amazing teacher. Respect him and he will respect you. I learned lot from this professor. Highly recommend.
So, I was excited to have him Winter 2011 for English 101 and was disturbed when he left our class a week into his class. We were replaced with Alice Nishioka. Ever since then it's been a disaster because we couldn't drop the class without getting a W... thanks a lot.
Critical analysis of speculative fiction novels and the world at large. Fabulous lecturer. Highly recommended Prof. Illumination and entertainment guaranteed.
he is an extremely funny and interesting teacher. I took his Wed 3 hour class and he knows how to keep the class active. if you are interested in Critical Thinking he will help you analyze the book in depth. Very helpful and always concerned about his essays and papers.
Once again, taking this wonderful professor again. I have always love the way he teaches. even though the class is always quiet, the class is pretty good
He is smart and funny.
One of my fav professors EVER! Very intelligent, I loved all the required reading. I had him for 2 classes (103 + 217) got an A in both. Took a lot of work, but he goes the extra mile for those who really try. Genuinely cares about his students. Take advantage of his office hrs. Loved his classes!
very smart teacher and extremely helpful
Man,he is hot looking to the ladies, but is knowledgable in the subject of English, he really cares about his students and takes the time to help them(Male and Female),definetly take advantage of his office hours he is almost always there when you need help.I'm not saying his class is easy, because its not but he does push you to be the best you can.
THIS TEACHER IS REALLY HARD BUT FOR ME IS A CHALLENGE I LOVE THE WAY HE IS BECAUSE HE REALLY TEACHES. i will recommend him he has absolute control of the class and i like it because i can stay focus on my assignments
goes off subject sometimes,he is not hot, what is everyone talking about,i rather know his teaching style and it was exceptional this fall 2011 semester, but if he reads this, Dude!, please stay on point during grammar for future students so they pay attention more during that time, and give equal attention to everyone not only those need it more
Nice guy, helps his students, will answer all your questions,I would recommend him to anyone needing extra help in getting to a higher level course, he also teaches higher levels, but he is not an easy teacher,he will push you to learn,if your lazy and do not do your work, you won't pass,Take him if your ready to advance your education
my rating says my point, not enough clarity on grammer section of class, he is all about the essay portion of class more
Professor Ruiz is a very good teacher. He is clear with his expectations with the class and challenges his students to think. Work hard and you will get an A. He's also extremely easy on the eyes. Also, he helps those who ask for it.
Really cool professor. Heavy emphasis on reading. Be prepared to hit the books. Overall I enjoyed his class and would definitely recommend him.
great critical thinking incentive from my youngest prof so far, after 6 sem's. he is particular(little leeway) abt what he wants to read and see in HW, essays: good proceeding /learning tool into higher English
He was very helpful towards everyone in class and made it clear as to what was needed to get a passing grade. There is a lot of writing/reading involved, but again it is a english class! Take him you will not regret it and you will learn a lot. He is awesome and it helps that he is also slightly attractive lol
Interesting class with cool literature. Professor Ruiz is clear and personable, it seems as though his professor genuinely wants his students to learn.
He is okay but at times in class he would cuss. I do not like that kind of tone from any professor. It just makes the place a hostile environment and it is unprofessional. I would not take him again because he would cuss spontaneously.
I waited about 6 months to take a class with Profesor Ruiz because I heard such great things, and they were all true. He is a very nice guy and willing to help you whenever you need it. Take advantage of his office hours, too, they will help. Prepare yourself for tons of reading and analysis. His class is not easy, but you will learn a lot.
His class is not easy but he is very helpful. His lecture is very interesting. Lots of reading and writing. I just loved him!
His lectures are great, you will learn to break down & analyze text. The books we read were kinda depressing but you learn to see things in a new way. Always willing to help if you ask. As for the cursing...maybe once or twice but not in a hostile way. He'll treat the class like adults so if you just left HS then maybe not for you. He's super nice!
This professor will challenge you to think. Lots of reading, lots of writing, lots of text analysis, you will get the grade you deserve, but he gives you everything you need to do well. He is approachable and makes himself available to help any student. If you're having trouble, go see him and he will help. He is funny makes class fun.
This online course was excellent. Only thing that bugged me was the weekly 600 words to write divided into 3-4 papers. All 3 major essays were 10 pgs long with research. He is preparing for for the harsh reality of Univ level where 10 pages is the norm! Loved the reads though they were a bit depressing.
If you want to learn while not being bored out of your mind like all these other professors, take prof. Ruiz. He is an extremely good teacher and is there to help you learn. I ended up getting an A in his class and I hate English. But as long as you read everything he hands out and stay on top of your assignments, you'll do great!
Great teacher, grades papers fast, phenomenal feedback and gives thorough lectures. He explains things so that you think about the material in a way you would've have previously. He's very upbeat and not at all harsh, but encouraging. Just know your MLA format and how to write a paper and you're set! Fun class, and I do recommend him.
i love this teacher. he is really helpful unlike other english teachers. he makes you think in a whole new level. just read the books and participate in class and you'll do good. he gives help to those who ask for it
Professor Ruiz is a wonderful Professor. He is easy if you do the work. He teaches at higher levels than any other English Professor that teaches 97. He prepares you for 28,101 and 103.He does not sugar coat it.What I love about him is that his students come first to him.just read the books and participate in class and you will do great
He tells you from the Day 1 that if you don't like to work, you will fail or barely pass. But, there isn't really anything difficult thing about his class. He doesn't really give you homework but offers help anytime you need it. He emphasizes the importance of writing; so, you will learn how to write better papers. Novels are your textbook.
He changed my life as a student. Because of him, I now have a different perspective on English. You should definitely take one of classes, it will be one of the best choices you can make as a college student.
By far one my favorite professors at LACC. Reminds us of what a teacher should be and is very passionate about his English. He helps those only who seek for help and always makes an effort to help every single. his class is not that easy but you will see a great amount of improvement in your writing, great English professor!
Professor Ruiz is very passioned and dedicated english teacher. As long as you do your part, complete your work, and stay dedicated; you will not only grow as a writer but as a person as well. Prior to taking his class I never enjoyed english;however, how I have a new found love and respect for the subject.
Prof Ruiz is amazing. He's passionate about what he does & has one goal: to see his students become better writers. He's always available & encourages you to ask him questions. Provides excellent feedback. He teaches you to think for yourself and to not accept things at face value. He's not difficult, just do your work like you're supposed to.
Prof. Ruiz is definitely a good English professor. very recommended. You will see an improvement in your writing. He gives you a lot of feedback and teaches you how to be a better writer. Lot of work but if you really want to learn, take him.
He really makes the work interesting by relating his topics to every day life. Highly recommend him! He gives a lot of feedback and very supportive. Some of the reading may be difficult for some but he helps clarify any confusion. A+ teacher!
Professor Ruiz will teach you much. Take his class. His lessons will change your life.
This guy is tough as nails! Prepare to write like never before. You will be staying up all night, every night, just to keep up. He grades reasonably tho.
Great topics in the course. Super tough man. Demands lots of hours in the online forums. I started getting failing grades until the end where I finally got the concept and pulled it off successfully. NO Easy A's!
If you want to learn how to write, take professor Ruiz. He is not easy at all but if you look for help, he will help you.Take advantage of his office hours. I Highly recommend professor Ruiz to anyone who is actually trying to learn; you will not regret him.
His syllabus describes him best. "I am NOT an easy A." "I am easy like Sunday Morning".
Professor Ruiz is simply one of the best teachers I have ever had. He will challenge you, and if you take advantage of his class and office hours, you will become a better writer. Because of his English classes, I feel ready to transfer to a university.
Professor Ruiz has completely changed my life. Because of him I transfered to ASU for a major in Journalism. Novels are your textbooks, you must read. Very helpful. Not an easy A. Also, requires a ton of work outside of class. But is very helpful throughout the entire writing process. I HIGHLY recommend him. Smartest individual I've every met.
Taking Prof. Ruiz's class was the best decision I ever made. No it's not easy but he's amazingly helpful and funny and honestly, he changed my outlook on life. He's a perfect professor, if there ever was one.
Professor Ruiz is a young attractive professor but don't let that fool you: he's difficult and you will get the grade you deserve. You'll have to work but his lectures are worth it. He's dedicated and very charming and also, very helpful. Take advantage of office hours and send drafts! Flawless professor, changed my life :)
Best professor I have taken for an English class. He is so helpful, he will go out & beyond to help you pass his class. There is a lot of essays, but he helps you during office hours.
Very straightforward, and helpful. Though I never really visit him during office hours he did encourage everyone to go see him. I didn't I was on track and never missed class basically he gives you everything, just don't let laziness take over. I took him for Fall 13 and Winter 14 though challenging but worth it. Recommend!
Take this class if you want to be a better writer. It will be a tough road, as you will read a few books and be asked to think critically. However, you will mature as a student and as a person. Great if looking to improve your writing in preparation for transferring. I wrote my personal statement for UCLA while in his class and got in!
To date, one of the hardest instructors. Lots of reading. Don't expect to do an essay the night before it is due because he will know and you will get a bad grade. One of the most interesting and hardest classes I've ever had. You will not regret.
This is a vigorous course but will help you extremely in your writing. You will need the books required in the syllabus and the workload isn't too extreme but manageable. Just make sure that you take notes in your books and pay attention to analysis in class. Also, revise your essays and take advantage of office hours. I recommend this professor.
Take this class ! Essays and reading duh it's english. Stay ontop of the reading and take notes. He's worth it, you'll learn so much. Revise essays at least 4-5 times and you're golden. Great professor that's great at inspiring students to work hard.
"Tough Love" that's all but I enjoyed every single novel he made us read. Literally made me feel I was in "pain" whenever I wrote papers for his class but it was fun! Would I take him again? Depends. He's a magnificent professor, charming, funny and helpful! Very open minded and lectures are interested. Recommend ? :D
Great Professor! And will growing stronger and more experienced!
Professor Ruiz is straight foward and a lot of students do not like that. He is there to help you even if you email him on the weekends which for me is great. Do not miss his class because trust you will miss so much! This is not an easy A class you definitely need to work for it but its worth it. He gives amazing which is a plus :)
He is awesome and really wants his students to pass the class.
Professor Ruiz is hands down, one of the best english professors I have ever had. Being in an online class can make you feel distant from your teachers, but he is ALWAYS available and more than willing to help. He doesn't even know what I look like, and I've never met him in person and yet, he is still one of my favorite professors of all time.
I took the online class during the summer which meant a lot of information in a short amount of time. There is a lot of reading, I felt like I was trying to write an essay before I even got done with the book. At least he chose interesting books to read. He's always available to answer any questions.
Amazing professor , looking forward to take him in the future.
Ruiz has a plethora of knowledge and its evident the instant he speaks. Lots of reading with heavy prompts. Be prepared to improve your time management. Drawbacks: he's dark. All the readings are of a dystopian theme. If you're one to have negative views on life, your mind may get distorted by whats covered. Wished he taught a counterbalance.
Best Professor ever!!!!!!!!!! Very challenging, but totally worth it. Be prepared and write A LOT! Overall he is very Amazing!!!!
He's tough however it's well worth it for your writing. Expect essays and reading. Come prepared and openminded. Be on time. Professor Ruiz is great. Interesting essay topics. It was a pleasure taking his course.
Great Professor, but you have to earn your grade. To pass, you MUST read the books he assigns, do the online prompts, & write/revise your essays. He'll read papers before they're due & tell you what changes will make them better. Plus, Professor Ruiz responds to emails within 12 hours. Overall, he's excellent! If you're organized, take him.
The type of teacher that would push hi to do your best and make you want a better self !!
I took the accelerated online course, it was tough. There's a lot of reading, writing and quizzes. However, he gave awesome feedback on the essays, novels are your textbook, and the quizzes are easy if you review his lecture notes/videos. He is super helpful and patient. I also didn't take any other class, so I think this helped me tremendously.
One of the most caring professor I've ever met. Take his English! English 270 was rigorous- but at the same time- enjoyable. Get ready to read- you'll read a lot. However, Professor Ruiz is generous about his grading. So it's easy to get anything above B. I got an A! Fun class. Make sure you familiarize with Jugian Archetypes before taking Eng270
There's A LOT of reading and A LOT of writing, but it's all fun stuff to read and the papers have very interesting topics. He gives really clear criteria and is always ready to look over your papers before they're do and will give great feedback. Would definitely take him again.
He is challenging but his class is well worth taking. Be prepared to read and write. It is English ! This is the best choice you'll ever make if you want to improve your writing.
He is an amazing Prof! You MUST read the books, online prompts and write/revise your essays. SUBMIT YOUR PAPERS BEFORE THEY ARE DUE so that he can give you some suggestions. Super down to earth and overall a genuinely kind and honest person. Definitely the best English professor. NO CONTEST.
I took professor Ruiz when I was a community college student and the one thing that I took from his class was: at least have an interesting title. He has not only taught me how to write, the material he uses is outside of the regular European works students are used to. I wrote an essay based on books about the zombies (or some crazy topic). Thanks
I absolutely love Professor Ruiz. I am very visual learner so online classes can be tough. He has video lectures to go along with his lecture notes. He is AMAZING! His book choices are definitely geared toward the younger crowd.... World War Z, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.... but overall fantastic class. I took him for 101 and 103 and got A
HE gives alot of essays back to back
Great Professor cares about his students.
Keep in mind, he harsh grader. Essays need to be perfect without any mistakes. I really regret by taking his online winter term class because that was impossible to get a high score on my class. I would not recommend at all. Don't take his online class.
I took his online winter class and feel like I learned a ton. It was fast paced due to being a shortened semester. You need to read the material beforehand. But it is totally doable. His video lectures were super helpful. If you take the time to submit an essay for feedback before it is due, he will tell you what needs to be improved.
I look forward to each class because it's always interesting
Very knowledgeable professor. Took online and it was fine EXCEPT he requires you to respond (200 word) to a discussion question he posts once a week. That was fine, but then he requires you to respond to another student each wk with another 200 words. I signed up for online to NOT have to deal with other people. 4 papers total. Midterm and final.
I had to drop my original class and took this class online instead b/c of the reviews. This class has given me more of a headache then my Chem. class! You read 3 books that are extremely difficult to get into. 3 papers, 1 mid term, 1 final, 1 15 pg research paper. 200 word post+200 word responses weekly. Extremely tough grader on top of it.
Hands down the best professor! I enjoyed the two books we read "V for Vendetta" and "1984". They are really interesting books and so is he. He really wants you to know how to write an essay and go into detail as much as possible which is a good thing because it makes you be more open with different perspectives. I learned a lot from his class.
I took Proff. Ruiz for my English 28 class and I do not regret my decision. He is very clear on his expectations and how he will help his students improve on their reading and writing skills to prepare us for 101. Yes, there is a lot of reading but it helps the students improve and build. He is very funny and cares for his students. Recommend him.
He will teach you everything you need to know. I loved his youtube videos to discuss the reading. The selected reading were all very interesting. I think he really considered what they students would be interested in. There are quizzes every week, but they're not hard. The essays are long, but follow the formula format he gives. You can't go wrong.
one of my favorite professors so far! If you want an easy A dont take his class. If you actually want to take a meaningful, well taught, insightful class then he is the professor for you! Really enjoy his lectures & the way he breaks down his expectations of work. He constantly encourages to reach out to him and his feedback is great!
Good teacher but his grading is on the scale. Dont expect his class to be an easy A. To earn an A you have to work hard. His lectures are great is just his grading when it comes to essays. For some point I couldnt pass the class. Hes a cool teacher. If youre willing to put the effort, then this class is for you.
Hes a good prof but his grading is so hard. Cool teacher and lectures are great. I couldnt pass the class for some point. The essays are based on the book we read. If you are willing to put in the effort for essays, then this class is for you, but if youre not then you will suffer from this class. He expects you to know how to write an essay.
I don't get the harsh reviews! Professor Ruiz is AMAZING!!! Here's a tip when choosing an english professor; email them to ask what books they are using. If you hate the material, you will hate the class! I found Prof Ruiz to be a very generous grader, and he is extremely approachable in office hours. Took him for 101/103 and got A's.
Professor Ruiz is a AWESOME teacher. He is one of those teachers that, for your sake, advise to write notes of his lectures. When it comes to the lectures on the books that you have to write essays on, he'll explains what he wants out of your essay. Don't get me wrong; his class is not a walk in the park, but he is very understanding.
Took Professor Ruiz for 2 of my english classes and it's very easy. It is up to you to keep up with the reading, modules, and essays (especially if it's an online class). Gives great feedback on essays. If you have questions regarding your essay, he can help. Send your rough drafts and he will respond with great annotations. Totally recommend!
I took prof Ruiz and he is an outstanding professor Ive ever met. I got a D in his due to personal issues but Ill definitely be a taking him again and work hard this time.
TAKE HIM TAKE HIMU GUYS! Lectures are INTERESTING. can you imagine, INTERESTING lectures in an English class? and you learn so much more than just standard curriculum. Time goes by so fast too
Cool teacher. He taught taught the literacy techniques to the class which they never used before. I took prof Ruiz for three English classes. I took him for 97, 28, and 103 and he is far the amazing teacher Ive ever had. He is a tough grader but if you turn in the paper before its due he gives good feedback on how to improve your writing.
I took 3 class from him with my 3 friends. Never had professor like him. He cares about the student. ---------- Attendance is half mandatory, -essay (late) is acceptable, -His final Is just 6-10 Question, -give strong feedback to students---------- Please take his class if you are going to take English!
i think hes a good prof, kind of pretentious but i learned a lot. his little attitude is also shown through grading but i liked and enjoyed the class. lots of work and focus is required but hes a real good proffesor
He grades hard and he also gives tough assignments to do. But overall he is an okay teacher.
Absolutely amazing! He is so organized that you never feel lost. You always know what exactly he expects and how he grades. He gives so much HELPFUL feedback. I even saved the files/videos he provides (writing rules, if you will) to help me in other classes. Absolutely amazing! I recommend him!!! **It is a lot of work**
Amazing teacher because he is clear on what he wants and what he is grading you on. Lots of reading done but again, with the feedback and all the ORGANIZED resources he offers (notes, videos, rubrics etc) you are well prepared. Overall, great professor. I even use his lectures/notes to do work for other classes. He is a tough grader though!
Professor Ruiz is a great English teacher. Online class was very organized, his modules are very informative. Weekly discussions are easy and engaging. Read three books each with an essay and one 10 page research paper. Tough but fair grader for the essays, it's best to send a draft to him before submitting for his feedback on improvement.
Personality, I was afraid of taking English 101 because I'm not good on essays and the thought of failing was hunting me ... but Prof. Ruiz explained well on how an essay should look like. It helped me through the course. Also, he gives really good feedback. If you need help DON'T Hesitate on asking.
I have never felt inclined to leave a poor review for a Professor until Ruiz. I am a straight A student with a 3.86 GPA. I have never made less than an A on ANY paper, let alone an English paper, and yet I made a B on all three of my papers for this class. Furthermore, Ruiz reported my grade incorrectly and has yet to fix it. He clearly has issues
Note taking is key. Attendance is important. Professor made Shakespeare reading very easy, use outside books for more modern literature translations. Reading assigned work is important. We worked on several essays during the Winter session. Overall great Professor he wants you to pass.
Professor Ruiz is hands down the best professor I have ever had! He really cares about his students. He is approachable and makes himself available for his students . His lectures were the best! I printed all of his lectures and look forward to using them for future courses. Do not take this class if you are not going to work hard!
Grades very strictly. A lot to read. His quizzes are very hard. He truly cares for his students. Gives good feedback. A lot to write and analyze.
He gives multiple open note quizzes. You have to read between the lines in order to pass his quizzes. There is a lot of analyzing and a lot of essays. He gives his essays due in the middle of the week and you can turn it in late but there is a penalty. Grades very harsh but gives good feedback.
I was a returning student when I took professor Ruiz my first semester back. I took him for winter session online. He was amazing! He chooses interesting books to read. I wish I could take him again but I no longer need English classes.
Good teach. Doesn't give you slack on grading but gives good feedback. A man who cares about the subject and actually wants you to learn. But again, quite a tough grader. Good lectures.
Although he is a passionate and thorough teacher, his quizzes are somewhat odd. They're a recap of his lectures but they're oddly written and WILL damage your grade. It's straightforward material but makes the class overly complicated with his directions. Beware if you are trying to get an a. Good luck.
Lemme get right to the chase, if you hate professors who give you multiple lectures and expect you to learn from them to pass your essays/exams, don't take this class. Simple as that. He's very unhelpful when it comes to helping his own students, he needs to work on that.
One of the few professors I've met who is passionate about teaching and wants you to do well. His online class is very organized and very easy to keep track of assignments. Sure, there are a lot of lectures, but they're very clear and helpful. The class is by no means difficult you just gotta do the damn work.
Professor Ruiz is a solid professor. Be aware! This class is not an easy one: 4 essays, a weekly discussion, a mid term and a final, and lots of reading. His English 270 is almost a hybrid English Lit / Philosophy class. He will challenge you, but he is always available to help and his advice is excellent!
Professor Ruiz has great lectures which will help you in the future. I have no idea why someone can rate him less than 5. He is always ready to help, he answers all your questions he even asks to send him a draft of your essay and he gives recommendations. What do else students need?
Professor Ruiz has very high expectations of his students, esp for essays. The video lectures, though pre-recorded from years ago, remain relevant & informative, however, I wish there was more interaction from him as he was nonexistent in the discussion boards throughout the sem. He is pretty uninvolved besides providing feedback on assignments.
If English is your second language, you must take this class. He understands English learners more than anyone in the LACC English department. He understands even better than ESL teachers. I do not mean his class is easy, but it is very worthy. If you do not give up, he will not abandon you, "unlike the other professors."
One of the best professors at LACC. He gives great lectures and the bonus lectures on what to write for essays helps so that you know what to write about. Send an email of your draft before it's due so that he can provide you feedback on what needs to be improved before you turn it in. I recommend students to take him.
I barely made it out alive!! Prof. Ruiz is a tough grader and hard critic. If youre up to writing 4-5 page papers this is the class for you. I took this class over the summer and honestly it probably was a bad idea. 3 tough papers. Weekly discussion, and quizzes. You need to buy two books for the class. Pretty tough in my opinion
Professor Ruiz does not participate in discussions, there is very little interaction between him and the students. However, he does provide feedback on essays. He has very high expectations and grading criteria. Lectures are prerecorded from 2008. Reading material is great, but the lack of interaction even for an asynchronous online course was not.
I admire Prof. Ruiz's teaching method. He gives insighful lectures which are interesting topics in the modern age we face daily. The books he chose reinforced critical thinking skills. He is so talented and knows how to help students to improve their writing skills in efficient manner. He is anthentic and always willing to be our studying resource.
The Professor seems very passionate about English and actually gives feedback on papers. However, he subtracts major amounts of points like minus 50 points from an essay for "not having specific enough quotes". Couldn't use the notes he gave on previous essays--by the time he returned notes to students, the next essay was already finished.
He's a good and funny professor but he's never satisfied you can work your hardest and he'll still give you a bad grade such a tough grader. He gives way too many essays back to back and always takes a while to grade things. Take him if you're ready for a heavy load of writing and reading.
I took English 101 for the five weeks summer, and his lectures are engaging. There are 3 Essays, a weakly discussion, a weekly quiz, and the final. He is a tough grader; However, he gives you good feedback. We only needed a poetry book and World War Z. If you really want to learn and care about improving your papers, you should definitely take him.
He understands what we are going through and also the lectures are well explained both in person and in online. I would take him again.
I did not enjoy my experience with Professor Ruiz. He is highly critical and seems like he is never satisfied. He will make you feel bad about your writing and use words such as you Stumbled. Beware he is not a supportive Professor. I would NOT recommend taking his class lots of essays that he will critique negatively. Worst Professor at LACC.
STUDENTS BEWARE. The professor gives a lot of work for short time. Two novels to read/do a 5-page minimum essay for each novel. One research paper with 8 pages minimum and 8 work-cited books. Final exam essay questions. All for 5 weeks of winter class! NOT enough, 5 more discussions/responses. All in Five weeks. Unreasonable, terrible critic. Avoid
Ruiz is a critic, not a teacher. He is reason why so many American students hate school. He thinks he is grading doctorate thesis instead of a paper from a 20+ students. He is very bias and close-minded grader out to traumatize instead of educating students. His grading is a mystery with no rubrics, just his own personal bias discretion.
Professor Ruiz is a tough grader, without adding valuable feedback on work. Quizzes will consist of very specific questions based on his written lecture notes and are very opinionated. I would not recommend taking this class to anyone who would like to improve their writing skills or anyone looking for an "Easy A" (or even B).
Professor Daniel Ruiz is one of those teachers you meet and he changes your life in an impactful and meaningful way. The level of effort, knowledge, and passion he has for the English subject and his students are unrivaled. His English 101 course consists mainly of: Critical thinking, reading and analyzing novels, and writing essays.
Awesome professor! I learned so much in his class not only about how to write a convincing piece of writing but also about current and world events. You can tell he's an intelligent person and has a lot of interesting things to say. Not to mention he's an easy grader and outlines exactly what he expects to see almost sentence by sentence.
Worst English professor at LACC, even he said that no one was going to pass his class. He is such a hard grader with very poor feedback. Do not take him if you don't want a heavy load of writing and reading. You're going to be miserable being in his class.
unrealistic expectation
The class was pretty chill, he is very kind and patient, you will learn some very valuable information on how to write essays, the class wasn't hard you just have to do the work which there isn't a lot of, yet he is very lenient when it comes to turning in things late so that's a plus! The only challenging thing about this class was the first essay
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE if you are not ready focus and work! Required reading 2 books and 2 - 6page essays. Weekly lectures are lengthy - required 200word-minimun discussion post and 200word-minimun-reply. 10page research paper and a lengthy final which also requires a lot of writing. Professor Ruiz is also a very strict grader! BEWARE!
I would put more positive tags if I could. The best professor! Really inspiring and interesting as a person. Pleasure to attend lectures. Always allowed to send work to him for review prior to submitting it. You can ask as many questions as you want during the lecture. Appreciates participation in discussions and encourages it. Highly recommend!
This teacher falsely accuses students of using AI. This is not fair at all. There is no AI detector that can be proven to be 100%. 70% at best, I did not use AI.
I took this in the winter, it was insanely difficult, but not impossible, the amount of reading and writing is fair, follow his examples, take your time doing the assignments, do not rush! My essay foundation has significantly improved and the quality of my work has increased, thanks to this class.
Unfortunately, I did not enjoy my time in Ruiz' class. He is very strict on grading and wants you to follow his lectures to a T. While I did enhance my skills as a writer, a lot of those skills did not translate to my other classes in different subjects. His lectures and lessons are dated and I found it hard to stay engaged throughout the class.
10/10 teacher he's so sweet! He has been nothing but understanding. To be honest he's only going to fail you if you don't do anything or show up. He literally tells you what to do and if you don't listen then that's your fault. He's not very strict and you can tell he cares about his students. take his class and pay attention, he's a wise teacher.
horrible prof doesnt check emails. doesnt even grade you properly many mistakes on quizzes and essays. no rubrics for essays 0/10 dont recommend
His class is terrible, and your grade will be very bad no matter what you do
