Funny guy!
Funny, interesting lectures and readings. Lots of work, though. Hard tests
A lot of readings, hard tests, but fun class. Best teacher I've ever had.
Very good teacher, you will have to work for an A though
living hell
will bore you to tears
Hard, hard class. Tough grader. Lots of fun, though. interesting lectures
A simply fascinating professor...
Great class! If you read the books, you'll pass. Very animated in class!
crazy as hell, he's got some nice stories.
Will make you work for an A, but its worth it!!
Crazy teacher, boring class, lots of reading
MOST eccentric professor at UNCC. Be wary, he screams a lot and bangs on things, which can be annoying to some. Doesn't take attendance, but be sure to go, b/c you need the notes, trust me. He's intimidating, but nice. Tests aren't too hard.
The hardest and best, the most fun, the most interesting, he's simply amazing, and so knowledgeable. Worked my ass off in there, and it was sooo worth it.
Awesome teacher! He is very crazy. Loves to interact with students during lecture. He makes an hour and twenty minutes fly by. He also gives you plenty of time to complete each book and goes over them thouroughly in class.
wonderful teacher, has his on style, crazy. very funny. Knows what hes talkin about. Lot of required text, but easy reading. Read stories and go to class, you'll make an easy A
I loved this man! He mad classes fun and interesting! If I could take American Horror Fiction again, I WOULD! Great guy and nice person!

He is WAAAY too hard and asks for too many details in his quiz/test questions!!! If you want a class that you will get a decent or good grade, DON'T take him!!!
awesome teacher! loves to scare the class (always watch what he's doing or where he's at) lectures can be a bit boring but tests are easy and the reading is interesting. very twisted man but still very cool. he used to carry a piece of skull in his pocket
good prof. some classes are boring but most of the time he makes them interesting. if you go to class and read the books you should get a B or A.
very boring, starts from beginnings of horror fiction(ex. Edgar Allan Poe). Talks like a preacher, sometimes its hard to keep track of what he's talking about. Overall, he'll make you work for your grade, and this was supposed to be an easy A
Head for the hills! Boring class, doesn't talk about literature and doesn't care what sudents think even though most of the students had a good amount of knowledge on the subject. Not reasonable and basically I hate him.
Great teacher. He makes you work for your grade. He makes class fun!
One of the greatest professors that I have taken in the English Dept. He is interested in the things that he teaches and wants you to learn. He gives a lot of pop quizes, so READ when he tells you to! Eccentric, but thats what makes him good.
You gotta work for him, but he's a great man. A bit hard to approach at first, but just get over it and he'll answer anything you ask. If it seems you didn't read he will attempt to publically embarrass you so make sure you do your end, he does his well
Take his class just to hear his stories about his own life.. If you only like Stephen King and don't want to wade through a 19th century novel, don't take Am Hor Fic. I think Shealy's great. Get ready to talk about vampires.

I don't know WHAT some of these people are talking about -- the class is SO easy if you're willing to do the readings and go to class. Interesting approaches to the stories I would have never thought of on my own. Amazing teacher, one of my best English classes.

Funny guy, great storyteller. I looked forward to his classes. Doesn't give too much reading, and exams are straight from notes.
He's the greatest story teller of ALL time!! I don't have a clue what some of these people are talking about... his classes are SO easy. It's ridiculous how easy his tests are. They're DIRECTLY from what you read. Great teacher, Great Stories, Great Classes, Easy A!
He's the most interesting professor I've ever had, but I tried to ask him a question after class once and I felt like running away.He was very short and acted annoyed that I was talking to him.Maybe he was just having a bad day. I would still recommend him, though. He's rather fascinating.
Easy, interesting class. Told us to talk to him after class, but when I tried this, he didn't seem to want to be bothered.
Interesting sense of humor, quite the jokester. he loves to make you jump by making his voice go really low then shreaking as he reads parts of the book... overall a good class. he gives multiple quizzes every tuesday, be ready, midterm is essay, final too
Not a class to take to get an A- it's one of those "take it because the teacher freakin' rules" classes. Great course! If you're an English major and don't take Dr. Shealy, you're missing out on what the major is about.
When it comes to 19th century Amer. Lit. - you cannot get a better professor than D.L. Shealy! He's not bad with American Gothic either. Needs to teach a class in vampires in lit. and film!
Funny, entertaining, fascinating, and a great story teller. Dr. Shealy's classes are hard if you don't keep up with the reading. Being dilligent will earn you an 'A'. I've never worked so hard for an 'A' and the one I earned in his class is the one of which I am most proud. Taking his advice to do what you love is what brought me to grad school.
Dr. Shealy taught me how to write a paper the correct way. He is funny and interesting and encouraged me to do my best. Be on time and be prepared...he likes to give reading quizzes. Will inspire a love of Hawthorne and Poe in you so be prepared to really love his classes and stories. One of best teachers ever.
Dr Shealy was my favorite professor at UNCC. He expects nothing but the best from his students, and I tried harder for his class than I did for any other. He's also entertaining and pleasantly eccentric, but underneath that there is a wise, kind man. I wish I could take him for another class, but unfortunately I'm graduating.
One of the most interesting classes I have ever taken. He is a great professor. There is a lot of reading, but if you like to read this course is perfect.
Basically, I want to have his children. He's an amazing professor who is intelligent, funny, and eccentric. I will talk him again if it is at all possible. I look forward to his class every time. If you take the class, do yourself a favor and do the reading.
read carefully- quizes are tricky!!! Dr. Shealy is great!
He doesn't belong at UNC Charlotte, but I'm glad he was there.
I am in this teachers class right now and I absolutely love him! Every thing he says is so interesting and the tests are really easy if you go to class and read the books. I wish I could take more classes with this professor!!!
One of the best classses I've ever taken and one of the best professors I've ever had. He is funny and makes everything very intersesting and fun. Very easy as long as you read the stories. I look to take more classes taught by him.
I love professor Shealy!! I wish he taught other classes! He's the best! He made the class VERY interesting (and FUNNY), and made you want to go to class. He can tell some strrannnge stories, but this class is an EASY A+! Just look over notes, come to class, and read, and you'll ace it!
He is a phenomenal teacher. A lecture was like walking into another world where the English heritage comes alive. It was a great experience also because there was constant exposure to new and varied readings from the classics of American Literature.
ECCENTRIC TEACHING STYLE!! He is an impressive professor; he really knows his stuff. However, gives pop-quizzes on hw readings so come to class prepared everyday. Really enjoyed his class and he was great to speak with for help. Overall, I definitely recommend him, but he is a hard grader.
Excellent professor, loved coming to class everyday. Tests and quizes are easy, as long as you read carefully/very detailed. Intriguing discussions. One of the best professors/classes I've taken at UNCC, and that's saying a lot. Plus he's kinda cute. Highly recommend him, if you enjoy reading.
Dr. Shealy is a fantastic professor! I thought I would despise having a night class, but he made it interesting and enjoyable! I loved coming to class. There were quizzes every day on the assigned books. His exams were tough as well as his grading of papers. However, he is always willing to help you out. He really cares. I highly recommend him!!
okay this man is wierd. idk where these people are getting this stuff from. If i had the choice i would have not taken this class...
Dr. Shealy is an incredible teacher. He is extremely knowledgeable of the material and more than helpful with anything you might have a question with. I would recommend him to anyone who has even the slightest interest in English or literature, he really makes it understandable and fun!
Dr. Shealy is great: nice, funny, & eccentric. You have to go to class & pay attention if you want an A, but he makes his lectures interesting with impressions & stories. Definitely worth while, take him if you can!
He's a great story teller, good at keeping you interested. If you read the books you will do well on the tests. Highly recommend taking this if you don't mind reading.
I'm stunned at the average rating of this class - this is the EASIEST class I've had at UNCC since I got here a couple years ago. Although 8 novels and several short stories are assigned, I haven't read any of them. If you GO TO CLASS, PAY ATTENTION, and TAKE NOTES, you don't need to read any of the books. I don't study for the tests and I get 97%.
I personally do not like the class because it is a lot of reading and note taking but it isn't that hard. You have to come to class, take notes, read the books, and pay attention. He is pretty cool too. It is a lot of other peoples favorite class.
Take this class if it's not a chore for you to read. Shealy is definantly an interesting character and you'll have a lot of fun in the class if you enjoy leisure reading.
Pretty Awesome. Just be sure to go to class.
This class was my favorite by far. There is a lot of reading required but if you go to class and keep up with the reading you're golden. Multiple choice tests are a breeze; drops lowest of 3 grades. He chose some great stories and the time I spent in class was awesome. He really gets into his lectures & draws you into the story. Highly recommended.
Fascinating lecturer & person, but inconsistent grader. He grades smaller assignments completely differently from major ones, with no rubric and little warning of the abrupt change in grading style. You'll learn a great deal, but you won't get an A.
Dr. Shealy's Horror Literature class gave me the opportunity to read quite a few works I had always wanted to read, but had never found the time to do so. It was also extremely easy; three multiple-choice tests, the worst of which he drops the grade, and a final exam. I ended up with a 100 in the course, but lectures were interesting. Recommended.
He is a good professor, but he definitely doesn't like to hear other people's interpretations of the text. If you don't agree with him, he will shoot you down and make you feel stupid in front of everyone. Not exactly what you want to do if you actually want people to participate.
Make sure you attend class, bring your book, take notes, and read.
He expects a lot of you since it's a 4000 level class. Get ready to read, and get read for tough grading.
READ. Dr. Shealy wants you to pay attention to the details of the story, which you will be quizzed and tested on. Takes attendance. Will call you out if you don't have a text in front of you. He was really easy to pay attention to during a long lecture because of his random humor.
He doesn't take attendance, so it's tempting to skip class. You're only hurting yourself if you do though. There are a few tests, but those are the only grades you get. You have to read for the tests because there are very specific questions about the reading. Tests are difficult, but you learn a lot during lectures. Also helps that he's hilarious.
Professor Shealy's class wasn't easy, but I learned a ton and really enjoyed the class. Short quizzes on most readings, a midterm, final, and one paper. You really have to do the readings to pass. He gave really thorough comments on multiple drafts of my paper which was super helpful. He's funny and gives enjoyable lectures. Highly recommend!
I thought Dr. Shealy was great in the sense that he was always available to help me when I needed an encouraging word or assistance on creating a thesis for my paper. However, his lectures are very much the typical college lecture and dont involve much discussion amongst peers. Oh, and his quizzes killed me. Study the text a few times beforehand
He was a fun lecturer, what he says in class is usually on the test, but it's also important to read. Read and Listen. Don't skip class at all if you can help it. EVERY CLASS MATTERS. Over, very easy, very fun and very informative.
Dr. Shealy's a great professor. Really passionate about what he's talking about. That said, in order to pass this class you will have to read, show up, and take notes. Pretty straight forward professor. If you pay attention you'll do great.
Great professor! Would definitely take again. My section was a horror-based LBST and I enjoyed each and every book assigned. The lectures were great. Only graded on three tests and a final with two optional extra credit essays. You must go to class, he askes questions on things he mentions in class and you must read or else you will not pass.
I found this class easy and entertaining. Attendance is not mandatory, but he says a lot in lectures that are on the tests. 3 tests, 1 exam, 2 essays for extra credit. You read quite a few books.
Professor Shealy gives amazing lectures and its clear that hes passionate about it. TRIGGER WARNING!!! A lot of the books youll read may have disturbing and triggering content, horror literature likes to push the boundaries of consent, I wish I had known that beforehand.
Very difficult tests, no review sessions, based heavily on the books you read outside of class. Final exam is cumulative so remember every single story or book you read in the class. He asks detailed questions about books. Attendance is not mandatory, pretty difficult class when only graded on tests and final. Interesting professor.
Awesome professor!! Interesting readings and lectures.
Mr. Shealy is a good professor. Not only does he give really detailed lectures that are easily to follow, but he also seems really passionate about the stories that we read. You must read every story in order to pass the quizzes and tests that he gives, but they're very straight forward and easy to do. As long as you do the work, you'll pass.
I took this class online, but it was still really interesting! Professor Shealy gives great lecture videos and speaks with such great enthusiasm it's very easy to follow along. The format of the class is well laid out, and if you read the stories, watch the films, and do the quizzes and tests, you should have no trouble getting a good grade.
I took American Horror with him and he gets so in character for his lectures, it's hilarious. There are 2 quizzes per week on the reading and the lecture. 3 Film Reflections and DBs on them (he does not accept late work so do these on time!!!!). There are 3 tests but he drops the lowest 1. Easy class if you read and watch everything.
Took his class Fall 2019. Skip class? You won't pass... because EVERYTHING covered in the tests he will say in class. People who failed were the ones who didn't show up and/or read the novels. This class was literally 3 exams with the first two at 30% and the other 40% (not cumulative I think?). No essays at ALLsuper refreshing as an ENGL major!!!
The materials for this class picked are really interesting. I also enjoyed how thoroughly he lectures each week because if you watch them you're basically guaranteed to pass the tests.
Professor Shealy is fantastic. Yes, he has high standards, but if you read the texts, pay attention in class (and show up), and are prepared to talk, you'll really enjoy him. He's a funny, personable lecturer who knows a stunning amount about 19th century literature and brings a very fresh and unique perspective to the stories he chooses.
I took The Weird and Uncanny-Topics in English and this class was very interesting. We read multiple stories and watch several films. They were all weird and intriguing. Quizzes and film reflections with 3 tests for the class. He drops the lowest test grade of the three. Read and stay up to date and you'll pass easily.
i swear the ONLY way to pass the class is to go to all the lectures and pay attention to every detail. however, if ur lazy like me: RECORD THE LECTURES ON UR PHONE (may have to sit at the front for good quality) but i read the books on my own time and just had the lectures on my phone to learn whenever i ACTUALLY finished the book. got an A tho
I took AMST: American Horror in Fiction and Film with Mr.Shealy was a great teacher really care about what he is teaching, i took this class in first half summer term and it was by far my favorite in UNCC. Assignment wise pretty easy couple of quizzes and watch a couple of movies and write a paper on them. He responds pretty quick too always a plus
Professor Shealy is an amazing instructor. His course material is interesting and exciting, his lectures are entertaining and informative. He is great at communicating expectations and goes above and beyond with giving reminders for due dates. If I could take a class he teaches each semester of undergrad, I would!
Absolutely a great professor.
Amazing professor, all of his lectures were engaging and the material that was assigned was very interesting. The assignments and grading criteria was clear and easy to understand. He is caring and communicates efficiently.
I took Daniel Shealy for AMST-3050/FILM-3051: American Horror in Fiction and Film. He provides all text and film links, so no searching needed. Weekly work includes two short multiple-choice quizzes that were only 5 questions long and some weeks he'll ask for two 350-word film reflections/discussions. Super easy and manageable class for the summer!
