Prof. Silvermintz is cool. I know more about Socrates than I ever have before because of him. If you plan to enroll in Basic Texts I, register in Silvermintz's class.
Professor Slivermintz is the dude!!! He is brilliant and sensitive. He rocks!!! if you have a chance to take his class...DO IT!!! otherwise, you must at least check it out...i suggest crashing a class or two just to experience it.
Professor Silvermintz knows so much! I learned a ton in his class. I highly recommend him!
Prof. S. knows his stuff. I learned a great deal from him, and I am impressed at how much he cares about his students' success. I highly recommend his class.
Challenging class with difficult material, but Professor S. is a fount of knowledge for those times when you get lost. Lot's of reading, but you will learn in spite of yourself, because he cares about his students and is very accessible. Try him, I think you will like him!
Professor Silvermintz has a vast knowlege of the subject and seems to enjoy teaching it. Some of the works are difficult to understand but Professor Silvermintz makes himself available for extra instruction. He is a wonderful professor and I would gladly take another class from him.
He is a very good professor. He encourages participation and he cares about the sucess of his students. I would highlt recommend him.
The class will seem overwelming at first but stay with it and talk to Pro. S and in the end you will be pleased with what you learned and your preformance. Pro. S. it extremly helpful.
Prof. Silvermintz definitely knows what he is talking about... but he did not get through to me. This class was very overwhelming and stressful. I have a very different opinion of this course than others who have rated it. I would NOT recommed taking Silvermintz to anyone.
Not so great. He loves what he teaches but it is hard to know what he wants out of you and if you dont say it like he does then you dont get the grade! Material is difficult and he expects everyone to be Philosophers!I cant say I have learned much and its been difficult just to get A's on assignments
The class was great he helps you if you ask just watch out for the cave assighnment
He'a an awesome professor! The readings were difficult to understand. He explained them in such great detail & everything made sense. He is extremely knowledgable and a really neat person. I hope to take him for another class in the spring.
The way the class was taught gave me a clear and concise understanding of Plato, socrates and and the works of others. Dividing into groups made the difference in breaking down the texts into sections to be better understood by students. When all group efforts combined their interpretations I could understand the work more clearly.
I found Prof. Silvermintz to be extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. He certainly requires one to think, but isn't that what philosophy is all about? I highly recommend him to anyone attending, or thinking of attending, UHCL.
Prof. Silvermintz's class was great! The translations he chose provided a medium I found easy to relate to, compared to other prof's. Knowing what to expect for the final was somewhat ambiguous but I think it was purposely done so. It was our chance to show what the course did for us. You get what you put into it.
Mr. Silvermintz's class was very good. It was very helpful to go see and talk to him about different assignments or about the assigned readings. He is very understanding and willing to help anyone with any problems with the readings or assignments. The essay's and final are not very hard if you look over your notes. Great job prof. silvermintz!!!!
Professor Silvermintz is knowledgeable, and an excellent instructor. He takes a difficult subject and presents it in a helpful way. He encourages class discussions. His office door is always open and he will help you find a way to be successful. I highly recommend this class and will take the next in the series from him.
Silvermintz is passionate about the material, but I don't agree with the other reviews. He can be condescending if the right answers are not given and I don't believe he presented the material well. I would not recommend him.
Very chanllenging. Makes you think and make interpretations but a very interesting class. He tries to assign different assignments to apply to all learning styles, but there is A LOT of reading. He is also very knowledgable about the topic and shows enthusiasm as well.
Overall, Silvermintz's class was thought provoking and challenging. It was, furthermore, enriching: the required texts were interesting and Prof. Silvermintz clarified them (as they were slightly difficult) and provided insight that was not immediately obvious to the passive reader. He also used a Socratic teaching method that forced thought.
Professor Silvermintz is very enthusiastic about the course material. He has a strong personal interest to convey the best understanding of the literature reviewed and is very dedicated to helping students if they are willing to take the time to ask for help. Highly Recommended.
Silvermintz is an extemely accomplished professor. I was able to understand and enjoy the texts due to his skilled teaching capabilities. His passion for the texts really engages students and overall he's just one cool dude.
SILVERMINTZ ENCOURAGES US EVEN WHEN WE FEEL THAT WE HAVE NOT DONE OUR BEST, HE LOVE HIS JOB AND HE PUT IN 100%. HE USES THE LAYMAN'S LANGUAGE TO ENABLE EVERYONE TO UNDERSTAND HIS CLASS.I HAVE PERSONALLY RECOMENDED HIM TO SO MANY THAT WILL BE TAKING HIS CLASSES NEXT SEMESTER. I WISH HIM THE BEST.
If your not into Humanities DO NOT TAKE this class. You will regret it.
I really liked professor Silvermintz. Take good notes, everything you need to know he tells you in class. He gives hints to stuff he wants you to figure out on your own. He's very fair. He loves what he teaches. Assignments seem harder than they acutally turn out to be. He's available to help. I would take him again for other courses.
GREAT teacher! Very focused on his subject, tries to teach for all aptitudes. I'll take him again as soon as I can. Challenging, bit covers texts most people are completely unfamiliar with. He's VERY open to helping students who ask & the only professor to really encourage students to come to office hours or e-mail him whenever they need help.
Professor Silvermintz is a WONDERFUL teacher! He is very passionate about the subject & that makes it much easier to understand. He is very willing to help if you ask and will explain clearly what is expected. This was my FAVORITE class of all the classes I have taken at UHCL & I would highly recommend Prof. S. to everyone. Even just for fun!
He's funny and energetic but confusing and not so helpful with understanding the material. He challenges you to think and the work can be difficult but I will say that he is awesome about understanding with paper mishaps.

He was one of the best professors I have had in explaining Western Tradition I. Great, professor & willing to clarify any questions of the text from class through email or office hours.
Gives an assignment for the day then gives as LITTLE directions for the assignment as he can. Does not have mid-terms. Instead has one cumulative essay final. Good luck!
He's pretty boring, but overall the class isn't too hard. He basically tells you what he wants you to know for the essays. One word of advice is to not take a class after his. He ALWAYS kept my class at least 5 minutes late every time. If you have to go to another building--it's completely impossible to make it on time so don't even bother.
This professor knows his stuff but he doesn't explain it well. He is boring, he has a weird sense of humor. He grades weird and he isn't consistent with his grading. Lots of reading, the papers aren't so bad as long as you follow his directions word for word.. I wouldn't take hime again.
Some of the reading is interesting. I stopped reading halfway through but read the sparknotes (better than cliffnotes). You MUST participate for this class to be successful. If you follow all the guidelines for papers, you'll do just fine. Citing is a must (hello, college!). Everything on the final is covered in lecture. I made an A.
Silvermintz makes this stuff fun! Very passionate professor. Didn't think I was going to like this class, but I dig it.
I definately never fall asleep in here. Silvermintz keeps it exciting. We just did the trial. Never had a class like that before! Love the class! Awesome prof. Funny and knows his stuff.
In class we had writing assignments every Wednesday, they consisted of 1 or 2 questions of what we though on a topic. Then 5 or 6 reading questions which we had to reffer to the books. We had 3 writting assignments. Got an A on the First, C on the second and am working on the 3rd. Wierd grading, boring, and stayed the whole time. 4-6:50 sharp!!!
It is time consuming. You do have reading and questions due every week. You have to be in class for him to take your homework. He will not take it late...no excuses. You are forced to stay the whole time cause he doesnt pass out the next weeks assign til the VERY end. He NEVER let you out early. The papers are fairly easy if you follow his directio
I hated this class. It was boring and you have homework due everyweek. I understand that the readings are important, but this is college. If I don't read the material, then make me pay on the final, not every week. Also, I had a tough time figuring out how to study for the final, as his lectures were conducive to notetaking.
At first he was not among my favorite teachers, you must stay till the end of class, but if you have to leave early just talk to him and he is usually okay with it. Lectures are a little rambling, assignments every week on reading and assorted topics. If you need any help he is more than willing to stay after class, or set up an appointment.
Mixed feelings. A good teacher, but requires a lot of work. Weekly homework that requires a good amount of reading. One paper. Two tests. One visual project.
Can't top Dr. Silvermintz! I absolutely loved his class. He truely loves what he does and it shows. Very intelligent man! I learned so much. His lectures are interesting and he has a fun personality. He kept us laughing and engaged the entire semester. This is my favorite class to date.
Thank you Dr. Silvermintz. I really learned a lot from your class and it has opened my mind to a higher level. I felt like I was in a cave and now have seen truth but I am not going back into the cave. My life has more meaning now than just making money and working 12hours a day. I want to leave a legacy like the authors of the books we have re
i absolutely loved silvermintz... his discussions are very engaging and he keeps everyone involved..i def. learned a lot in this class that can be applied to everyday life.. he is an awesome professor!.there are a lot of readings..but they are not hard to read..and he explains things when you dont understand them.hes very passionate about class!
This class was an easy A! If you did the reading and turned in the homeworks and researched enough into his papers, you were guarenteed the grade you were searching for! Would recommend to anyone!!
Really cares about the students. Dedicated, fun, great professor. You need to keep up with homework- essays too.
an unbelievably intelligent man! serious about education and critical thinking. PhD's should be taking courses from him in order to learn how to teach.
What a wonderful professor! You knew exactly what was required the moment you received the syllabus. He does require attendance and thoughtful input into the homework assignments, but he really wants to see that you get "SOMETHING" from his lectures...and you do! Highly recommend this professor.
Extremely helpful and willing to work with students. Take the time to email him on your papers - it will help you. Fun class. Draws out the students for participation. Do the homework (it doesn't take long and helps with your reading)
Dr. Sivermintz is a unique individual with his own teaching style which keeps the class interest. Homework is easy and helps explain the mandatory readings. Essays are maximum 1,000 words and designed for you to explain what the readings are over.
Incredibly effective teacher. I saw Dr Silvermintz rock the Jung Center; I wanted to flick my lighter and hold it up for him - he was that good. He knows Plato in English, Greek, and 22 other languages. This guy will put you to thinking and writing critically, and carefully. Yes, your soul will be in a better condition when he's done.
Dr. Silvermintz is extremely interested in getting his students to understand the material. The books covered in class are difficult but he does give homework to help guide you. I found his lectures long but interesting considering the material. He is always willing to help. DO the homework because it is worth a lot of points and helpful.
Professor Silvermintz is very passionate about the subject. He was also very helpful to students that had trouble understanding the text. There is quite a bit of reading, but it's a humanities course so it is expected. Weekly short answer question and three essays. I made an "A" on two of the essays and a "B" on one of the essays. Good professor.
Prof Silvermitntz makes this class interesting by placing concepts into modern day senarios. He makes you think and it feels good. I knew NOTHING about the subjects before this class and walked away feeling like a scholar. Do the homework it will practically write the papers for you. It's not hard if you READ THE MATERIAL!
This class is incredibly boring...but what did you expect it's HUMANITIES. The class drags on for all 2 hours and 50 painful minutes. Bring something else to do in this class or you will go crazy. However, I have to say that over time I have grown less annoyed by the professor. He's a fair grader and wants everyone to succeed. NO TESTS! HW & 1 quiz
Great professor. Weekly work consists of doing the reading (usually about 1/2 a book per week) and filling out his homework sheets (6-8 questions about the reading). 3 papers on reading materials. No tests. Lectures are fairly interesting. He is very passionate about the material, however he does take up the entire class time every week. Take him.
Ok so this teacher is very into his class which is fine, but its annoying when he keeps you the full 3 hours(and sometimes past that). He doesnt grade his papers, his student aid does and his aid did not like me.. so i ended up not doing well in his class. TIP: (find out who the aid is and BEFRIEND them). ofcourse do the homework too.
All i have to say is I got all As in his class(from homeworks to essays and went to every single class(good attendence)) but still got a B on my transcript. Was accussed of plagerism so i didnt even bother to argue about my letter grade- overall not a good experience in this class..
Prof. Silvermintz is an amazing professor. TAKE HIM IF YOU HAVE A BASIC TEXT PRE_REQ. three papers, and homework every week based on different readings for the semester (not hard just do them). Show up to every lecture as well.
Different in a good way! Very enthusiastic about the class and will keep you the full time. Weekly homework assignments are necessary to pass the class. Papers take some getting used to. I do not believe his aid grades the papers because he personally replies to your paper with constructive feedback only a person with his experience could give.
Took his basic texts class. Was very interesting, the teacher is very passionate and involved with this subject. He takes the full 3 hours of the course. Lots of reading, lecturing, quizzes, and 2 major papers. Had to buy like 9 different books for the class. Homework every week over reading . I learned a lot from his class.
He's very passionate about what he teachers! Very easy class! He does lecture for the full 3 hours and gives homework out every week. The homework is easy, goes along with whatever book you are reading at the time. The papers are easy, made A's & B's each time.
Dr. Silvermintz is the BEST PROFESSOR is very clear in this teaching and encourages his students to participate in class. His homework assignments are not hard at all. Very helpful when it comes to the essays that he asks of you. He appreciates hard work and is always available for help He keeps the class engaged which makes time go by fast! GREAT!
EXCELLENT PROFESSOR and professional. Very, very passionate about his work. Learned a lot. At first hesitate about taking this class, but it was all worth it. Highly recommended from other students. Definitely an excellent choice. A lot of reading but worth the "A" in the class.
I was very surprised by this class. I ended up taking his Basic Text I class, which was basically a philosophy class, and It was a good experience. We read a total of 3 books, 2 articles and 2 papers. NO TEST. I highly recommend the class, very easy grade as long as you read the material.
One Assignment a week, two major papers
Dr Silvermintz is 1 of my fave professors. He is so knowledgeable and interesting. He will keep you for the entire class time; but it is never boring. He gives weekly reflection question homework, a few papers, and possibly a presentation. I wish I could take him for more classes. He really cares and enjoys teaching.
Had him for intro to Humanities. He is a very passionate teacher, I learned a lot. We read like 5 books or more though out the semester and had a weekly homework assignment, which isn't hard if you do the reading.
This professor was great and very challenging because this was my second philosophy in my major. The run down is 1 paper per week and 2 major papers. You will read 5 books total 2 I felt were hard reads and 3 are easy reads. If youre looking for an A in this class you need to nail those papers. This Professor is a joker and you will love it.
Longest three hour class sessions I've had. Mind-numbing material that's completely over-analyzed. Excessive homework and attendance are major percentage of grade.
He is a really good professor. Very passionate and dedicated to his lectures. Makes them really interesting. 2 major papers, no exams, each week you have to read a book or a handout and submit homework answering questions about the reading (easy, nothing complicated) accepts max of 7 late hws, attendance is a huge part of your grade. Must take him.
There is definitely a lot of lecturing, but it's easy if you read the books he assigns and pay attention in class. We had 2 major essays- midterm and final. He had us turn in homework every week, but he made it super simple with including page numbers on the questions to find the answers. Highly recommend!
Not based on a textbook. There are five books that are mandatory. Attendance matters. Do your best on the weekly homework packets (HW is 40% of the final grade). You have about a month to complete the essays once assigned. I received B's for both essays but A+ on all homework. Don't slack on the HW.
Attendance is mandatory and he assigns weekly homework. I personally found his lectures both boring and confusing and didn't get anything out of them. There are no exams, instead there is a midterm and final essay. At the end of the day if you read the material you should be fine. Grade is 40% homework, 10% attendance and 25% for each essay.
I enjoyed this class, but hated having to sit there for a 3 hr class about ethics and moral philosophy. Thankfully, he did give us a break halfway through class. There's no exams, just a midterm paper, final paper, and weekly hw based on the reading. The hw actually kinda helps in understanding the reading and is great for keeping one's grade up.
40% Homework, 10% Homework, 25% Midterm paper, 25% Final paper. DO THE HWs, come to class, and prepare to still for 3 hours to hear him lecture. Personally I would not take this class because I didn't learn anything. If you are about ethics and can handle his philosophy then take it. Participation matters, ready to read, lectures are heavy.
Dr. Silvermintz is hilarious and inspiring. I took him for Humanities and Philosophy courses. There is roughly 1-2 books a week. The books are necessary in completing the weekly homework (40% of your grade). The midterm and final are both papers with topics related to the text. He grades on class participation so speak up!
I really enjoyed his classes. He was a fun teacher and all of his lectures got you involved with the reading.
Great professor overall. You have homework every week but its not overwhelming. She up and put in the work and you will have a B or A easily.
U will be reading 5 books for his LOVE class. U have homework every week about the books or articles your reading that week, but the r usually less than 10 questions. U have one midterm essay and a essay for your final. Attendance is part of your grade. His lectures r the full 3 hours, but he does give u a break. U have group/class discussions.
Great Professor. Very clear in his analogies and instruction. He is very helpful. His class is interesting and never boring
Great professor! Loved the way he lectured the class and engaged the stories to be fun! He does lecture for the whole class period but it consisted of class discussions and arguments. If you don't understand the poetry, it's okay! He covers it in class in great detail. Total of two papers, one mid-term and a final and weekly homework on the reading
He's so funny and does his best to keep the lectures engaging and explain the last week's reading, but 3 hours of it is rough to sit through. For the second half of class he makes you work in groups and sometimes present stuff so be warned! Homework every week takes a few hours. And you can't skip class; his TA is not friendly about it! No tests.
I didn't get much feedback on homework assignments. When I asked what I should do about not understanding the material in class, he didn't help me at all. It was really hard to understand how he was grading assignments. The lectures weren't very helpful and often seemed to confusing to me and others in the class.
I took Ideas in Transition: Love. By love, he meant sex and infidelity. I didn't learn anything about love before dropping. There's a lot of reading. 3-4 hours every week. He had us submit our midterms by email - we dropped the paper's text into the email and had to submit it that way. It's not dense, it's just bad.
One homework assignment every week, two exams. Gives AMAZING feedback. Very easy grader as well. Make an effort and you'll get an A. He allows 4 late assignments but they're not that bad. He is very passionate about what he does, promise. If you are struggling he is there to help. If youre thinking about taking him, do it!
By far a favorite of mine! Dr. Silvermintz is just a blast! He has some incredibly interesting insights on a large variety of texts. Yes, youll be reading but the books arent long.
Great class - very interesting readings - clear expectations. I'd take the class and the professor again and really enjoyed learning about a very interesting subject.
Amazing feedback. Submit assignment of book currently reading every Wednesday. 2 major papers that you have to email him. You kinda have to work hard for essays but not so much for assignments. The TA is very helpful!
The subject matter in HUMN 1301 was really great to begin with, and the lectures help to enhance understanding. It was one of the most structured and straight-forward online classes I've taken. He is a wonderful professor.
My favorite class so far! Amazing and interesting lectures. Weekly assignments but nothing too much and overbearing. I definitely recommend this class with this professor.
Weekly homework assignments (easy as long as you watch lectures/read). 2 papers that are also pretty easy if you use your homework. Prof Silvermintz is so funny and gives good feedback in homework and papers, his TA is also super helpful! Def recommend his class if you have to take Ethics.
I wish all professors were like him! Very easy! All his class consist of is 2 papers (mid term and final) and weekly readings with 7-10 questions! Gives great feedback! Provides the required readings(that are free) in the weekly folders! Also does 30-45 minute lectures explaining the content! Very easy class just have to read!
The class was an easy A for me. I took the class during the fall 15 week semester and it was completely online. No textbook was needed, he provided online copies of all of them for the week it was needed. We had weekly homework assignments that took about 2-3 hours to do. We also had a midterm paper (I made a B+) and also a final paper (also a B+).
Expect weekly hmwork that is over the readings attached & lecture he provides. These are graded pretty easily for completion. There are also 2 papers, midterm and final. These papers are graded tough. Only thing I didn't really care for was he did not put the 2 paper grades on BB, only the homework, so u don't know ur grade till till the very end.
provides all readings! homework every week over readings (some you can skim others are heavier reading) pretty easy 2 essays, midterm/final (2 pages thesis 2 pages antithesis minimum) Great video lectures too, I had him asynchronous Don't know my grade yet, but for the midterm he said i did really good and said it was "grad" lvl, hoping for an A :)
The class was organized very well. Midterm and final paper expectations were abstract, which is the only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars. The weekly homework for this class took around 2-7 hours depending on the week. I was expecting to get a B since I got a B on the on the papers, so Im grateful I received an A-.
Professor Silvermintz for humanities was one of those professors you find that actually sounds like he enjoys the topic and lecturing. This class was online, but he had recorded lectures for each week that were actually entertaining and I had no problem sitting and listening to. The content was good as well, nothing boring. Really enjoyed the class
Idk what his in-person classes R like but online is okay. He has hard questions on the HW sometimes but as long as u try and elaborate well, you should get the 100. He has great lectures just hard material to understand sometimes. The weekly readings can be difficult too. Do not procrastinate in this class! But he is very helpful and responds quick
Took him online. The readings are hard to understand in the beginning, but the last half gets easier. Weekly homework and 2 papers (midterm and final). His TA gives vague feedback on the HWs, but professor gives good feedback on the papers. He doesn't give extra credit, make sure you're thorough on the HWs! Lecture vids are VERY helpful, so watch!
I'm sure it's fine if you are just a student with nothing else going on, but if you work full-time and have other classes then choose someone else. Homework every week took 4+ hours, because the reading is HEAVY and the homework has difficult questions. You will also have to write two 4-5 page papers as midterm and final (with difficult prompts).
Class is not that bad. Main issues is the grading criteria is vague. The homework while easy you never know why you didn't get full credit(only happened once). The essays are overly long to make points and are structed in a odd fashion. My entire class was confused about his grading. Not a horrible class but you feel cheated grade wise.
Weekly homework assignments, consisted of two parts with anywhere from 2- 8 questions for each section. A midterm and final paper that are horrible. His grading for the papers are ridiculously difficult, must think we are in grad school. Professor Silvermintz was wonderful, quick to email back but his grading is off. GPA will hurt.
Professor gives good lectures. Attendance is not mandatory but counts toward participation points. Weakly readings and question homework about them, he wants engagement with the lecture and answers. Gives you feedback and clear on what he expects on assignments. Although readings are heavy he gives the handout as summarized as posible.
Greek Mythology is not a favorite of mine but Professor Silvermintz made it interesting. He provided most of the readings and made the lectures fun. I would take this professor again.
Professor Silvermintz is a good Professor. He gives you good feedback and replies to emails quick. His readings are pretty heavy and requires a lot of time to read it. His grading criteria is kind of vague especially for the Mid Term and Final Papers. Other than that, in overall, he is a good professor!
This class requires 7 separate books but he provides these. Don't buy the books.. There are only 3 grades for this class. 11 homework assignments will be 40% of your grade. The other two grades are a mid-term and final paper. He will provide feedback via email for these papers, not in Blackboard.
I took Ethics with Dr. Silvermintz and highly enjoyed it! He asks you to get 2 books for the course but you don't really need them, he provides the readings online (though the books are still very affordable). Class focuses on weekly homework assignments, they aren't difficult but can be time-consuming. Lectures go over the homework for that week.
I don't like philosophy, but he's quite good at making it interesting in his online lectures. Weekly assignments which are annoying and time-consuming to complete, are not that hard though. Two essays worth huge percentages of grade, and he grades them fairly. Approachable, nice, and overall a fair professor. Getting a 90+ is definitely attainable.
Great professor! His TA does not give much feedback on the homework, but oh well. I'm unsure who graded the papers, but they provide great feedback! Every week, there are around eight questions based on the book or article given and two papers for the semester. Not a lot of homework, but I learned a lot! I would retake it.
Professor Silvermintz makes philosophy engaging, even for those who don't enjoy the subject. With weekly assignments and two essays, the workload can be time-consuming, but using resources like unstuck AI can help with efficient study prep.
-Dr. Silvermintz is the most hilarious professor yet! He never fails to make our lectures engaging. -There is a weekly assignment that is due PRIOR to the beginning of class where it is then what we discuss. -Do not buy any of the text until it is needed as he provides it. -Failing is really only possible on your end.
I never write reviews, but I feel the need to warn others about his Ethics class so please take this warning. If you are working DO NOT take his Ethics class because he has DAILY homeworks which are actually difficult. Not only that but his lectures are 30-60 mins long on top of reading that HAVE to be done every day. Do not recommend for summer.
A lot of work, the weekly assignments can be time consuming. He grades everything quite fairly, if you try you will do well. His lectures are interesting and he clearly enjoys and understands the subject on a deep level. Nice guy overall, I recommend.
This course includes two major grades: the midterm paper and the final paper, along with a significant amount of required reading. My main concern is that the professor did not enter grades into Canvas, so I still do not know my overall grade the day before graduation.
