Thinks on such a higher plane that i could not understand what he was talking about.
He was unable to answer questions by just simply answering them. He always went into a long story as to why things were the way they were.
i actually understand what the crap he's talking about. if you want to learn and understand what's going on, take him.
i thought he was a great teacher he was very willing to help... i made use of all of his office hours and actually learn something in his class. he actually cares that you know something when you leave his class unlike most other math teachers
hard! boring! cannot teach!
Only one person in my class out of 30 passed the class. It was hard & he wasn't a good teacher. He did try though. He had just gotten out of school & hadn't gotten a teaching method down. I wouldn't take him again, & I haven't recommended him to others.
Good teacher. Very helpful. So now I'm slowly actually starting to understand how to do math because of his help. All in all he's a good math teacher, accept he's a to conservative.
Smith is a very hard teacher. He cannot teach. WARNING!!!DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS!!

Not clear, makes you want to bash your head in the wall... Puts questions on the test to "make sure you do not get them correct" Hardest math class i ever took... and i graduated w/ a major in math and a 3.9GPA
this teacher is terrible. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Tries to help BUT CANT. He is very intelligent but cannot communicate his knowledge to his students.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! If you ask him a question he will answer it in a way that will confuss you even more. He's test are nothing that he gave you to study, so don't worry about paying attention in class, or studying, it won't help at all!
CAN NOT TEACH!!!! Do not take him! He is a nice person, but a very bad teacher. the average grade one 3 out of 4 of our tests were 32,35,& 45.
DO NOT TAKE THIS TEACHER! He is very smart but cannot relate to common students who are taking 102 because they HAVE to. Tries to help and is willing to help but is very unclear. Take Johnson or A. White!

A really nice guy, and a decent teacher- if your familiar with the material. Moves along very quickly and confuses you more with his explainations. Class is pretty rough due to the unclear teachings, but he will work.
Man.. this teacher is my fave. He's so awesome. Alot of the other students don't understand him, but if you are good at math, then he's great
Oh man, he is AWFUL! Can't teach worth a mess. He knows what he is talking about though, and that is the bad part. He has no clue how to come off to people in his class. Puts things on his test that he didn't go over in class. Needs to clean his look up as well.he looks like he came from the wild!

Good teacher.
He definitely knows what he is talking about. However, he goes WAY TO FAST and doesnt completely explain the problem. He goes off on tangents about other math problems and will confuse you! He is a good teacher if you actually understand math. If you arent that great at math - DONT TAKE HIM! You will leave more confused then you were going in!!
If you are a scientist wannabe then take this guy he rules, if you are a P.E. Major then look elsewhere.
Really helpful and tries to make easy to understand.
Miserable experience - if you're great at math, you're going to be lost. He has extreme difficulty relating to non-math majors. He also has far too loud a voice. If you're a Peter Jackson fanatic, you might like the view.
Wow! I had ALWAYS SUCKED at math until Mr. Daniel Smith opened my eyes! Now I'm a MATH MAJOR! He rocks!
I am only taking his class because I have to have a math credit. Unfortunately I just got out of Calculus AB, so his class is pretty boring to me. I like him as a person... but Im glad I already know everything he's teaching. You ask him the time and he tells you how to build a clock. But I like him, I just take my markers and color everyday.

In 101, he was great. I learned a lot in his class and he seemed very helpful. He does have a very loud voice, though, and it will have your ears ringing by the end of class. In 102, however, the subject got a little more advanced and he completely lost his ability to relate what he was talking about to his students. He absolutely knows what he is talking about, but seems to have a hard time getting others to understand with him. Unless you're a math major, don't take him.
not a good teacher. He goes too fast if you are trying to learn something.I advise you to take a different teacher.

Smith is a very enthusiastic teacher, but he has a problem relating his teaching style to ppl w/extreme difficulty in math, even though he will tell you that he had to take a class like this when he was in college(I guess it's to make u feel better?)He talks 2 fast;don't bother telling him 2 slow down.Get a tutor(or five)if ur stuck w/him.
He is really hard for those who are not very good at math. He has no buisness teaching this math. He needs to be in a high course. He needs to slow down. I think it is true about the flirting thing. I have to say that is you don't want to fail your first math class don't take him!!!
I thought Mr. Smith did an excellent job - one of the best instructors I've ever had. He was always willing to explain & clarify when asked. He knew his subject well, had lots of enthusiasm and presented the material in a logical manner. He didn't go too fast and was available often after class - practice before asking him for help - he'll know.
test worth 200pts...suckcan not teach worth a crap. What a joke this teacher is
Mr. Smith has a wonderful personality! I don't like math, but I really enjoyed his class. His tests are very difficult if you don't study or do the homework, but he is always willing to help. Great professor!!!
I did very good in his class but he did seem a liitle hard for the people who did not comprehend the subject of math. But that is their fault these people should know how to add and subtract by the time they get to college.
He is a joke for this class. Does not teach anything more than his lecture pages that you can read yourself. Test a terrible. If anyone else ever teaches this class take them instead.
His tests are ridiculous! He'll do 12 sections then give you a 12 question test that make no sense - nothing from the book - but he tells you to do the homework. He gives no quizzes and takes up no homework. Do not ever take him for anything b/c he's terrible!
this teacher should not even be called a teacher. He is a joke and looks the part also. His teachings are limited to how he wants you to do in his class. good luck to the ones who will have him
great teacher helps u out alot
If your good at math go ahead and take him. Attendance is not required and he takes up no homework and gives no quizzes. His lectures are scatter-brained to say the least and his tests make little sense to the average college math student. If you are already good with math this will be a breeze for you otherwise stay far away and find someone else.
His grading methods are not fair. Not a single person has pass the 1st and 2nd test. beside that is was wrong for that final exam.no quiz and no homework for points.bottem line he does not help you but fail.
aaawww!! i loved him he was so nice! :) but im good at math so IDK! but he was fair and i mean his test are only like 14 problems but he reviews really well!! i think he is a good teacher! :) haha he is so funny tho for real, kinda spastic
EASY! Explains everything in detail countless numbers of times. Helps with anything when asked. Gives numerous examples for all problems that will be on the test. Pay attention and take notes and you'll pass. I made a 104 on the first test. People that find him difficult have to have absolutely NO understanding of basic math!
Poor man... his teaching isn't really bad; however, there is a reason that 14 out of 19 students passed. He is very lazy. He doesn't take attendence and does not give quizzes. You have only test and they are 15 questions of a. b. and c. Not a good Idea for a teacher. You can pass but the odds are against you. : (
He is one of the most helpful teachers you will ever meet at JSU. His tests are insanely hard, but he is genuinely interested not only in the material but in helping you pass. He'll sit there for hours if necessary tutoring you in his office if you just ask. Don't expect an easy class, by any means! But you will know the material if you do pass!
This teacher is hard to figure out. You will e a wonderful time in class but his test are too hard. The material is not hard, hwever his test are SUPER HARD............
if you are a technology major, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! try and take calculus somewhere. Just ask the dean how many people have passed this class in the last few years. Mr. Smith had 2 classes last semester and only 4 people passed from both classes combined. Avoid this teacher if you can

I took his MS120 class and all I have to say is his test are impossible. I wish the university offered another teacher but he is the only one who teaches this class. He explains the material fine, and you think you understand everything before the test. But when the test comes, you'll be lucky to get 3 questions right out of fifteen.
He is exceptionally hard....DO NOT TAKE his class, if you are in Technology, take cal 1 over this and 119, he is probably the worst drop/fail rate than any other math class
DO NOT TAKE his class, if you are in Technology, take cal 1 over this and 119, he has probably the worst drop/fail rate than any other math class...I repeat NO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, take cal 1
Good luck to those of you who attempt his classes. You must work hard, and he is very nice to help after class and in the math lab. Not sure why there is soo much complaining on here, obviously no one wanted to study...your in college. So grow up and work hard or fail. Yes you will never use this material again, but why waste your money failing.
Wonderful teacher. I am currently in his class. He has been very helpful and i stay after alomost every class. I scored the highest on the last test. I say he is great & I recommend him.
Unless math comes easily to you, do not take him for 112! He says that he's availible to help you during his office hours, but he was never there when I went by during his office hours. Your grades on the tests make or break your final grade in his class. It doesn't matter if you do your homework or not. You will be clueless come test time.
Unless you're a math whiz, don't take him. He doesn't teach and skips half the steps when explaining. He was not available for help, even during his office hours. Do NOT recommend.
Awful math teacher. Taught a broad material and would put the few things poorly taught on the math test causing almost guaranteed failure. Do not recommend to anyone!
Would definitely not take his class again. Review days are pitiful and tests are incredibly difficult.
MS 110 is finite math, which is what I'm taking with Smith. two words. horrible teacher. doesn't even know the material he's teaching, admitted it himself. he's constantly being corrected by students on what he's doing/teaching and his handwriting is completely illegible. when asked to re-read what he's written, he struggles to do so tremendously.
Dr. Smith is one of the best, understanding, teachers I've ever had. He's willing to slow down and explain things carefully to you, and is willing to take the time outside of class to make sure you understand the material. But he expects you to work. and /ask questions/ when you're struggling.
If you aren't very good at math I dont suggest taking this class. He doesnt give homework so your grades are strictly from the 3 test and final exam.
I loved taking his class. He was very fun and always willing to help anyone out who needed it. He reviewed before every test to make sure everyone was prepared. He does assign homework, but it is NOT mandatory. Loved his class!
Fair teacher that will help you outside of class. Don't understand why students give low ratings. He explains everything in detail, most just don't like to work.
He is the best!! He really takes the time to make sure all students understand what he's teaching. He is very understanding when you have to miss class and will work with you outside of class.
Do not take if you are not good at math. He is very intelligent but doesn't teach the material well. Plus, you better do good on the tests and final because those are the only grades you have.
He will help outside of class all you need. He really cares about his students and wants you to pass. 10/10! Take him if you can!
Instructor Smith is a very fast pace math teacher. He is quick but he does try to explain is slower, although it doesn't always help.
Mr. Smith is a wonderful professor! Hes very, very personable and understanding. He cares about his students, and hes one of the only math teachers Ive had to give partial credit. He makes everything much easier to understand. I struggled with math in high school, and his teaching is what encouraged me to keep trying!
Doesn't really teach just goes over homework questions. He gives a lot of homework there was one point in the semester where we had 8 assignments due in 2 days. Would not take him again.
I personally found myself worrying about his class ONLY all semester. He doesn't explain clearly, is very loud, doesn't grade quickly at all, and goes very very fast. I honestly feel like I learned nothing and finished with a lower grade because of him. Several people dropped it. Only had 2 tests not including final and homework only counts 10%.
Not a bad choice in my opinion. Hes very loud but it helps keep you awake and listening. Class is basically just going over homework questions. Lots of homework assignments. Tests arent easy. Very responsive to emails and helpful on review days before tests. No partial credit on tests but a good guy overall
Great professor. I struggled in high school and he really helped me in and out of the classroom. I highly recommend everyone to take him.
Who doesnt let their students use a calculator in MATH 112?! Hes so smart and thats his problem. He doesnt know how to teach kids that arent as smart as him. He assumes his students have seen the material before and only need a quick review.
Shocked that a university would let this man teach with his ineligible handwriting. The material is fairly easy but with no credit to him. Had to teach myself multiple lessons throughout the semester because of him skipping steps or problems in class. Very smart man, just needs to try and teach other people who are not as smart as him better.
Dr. Smith explains difficult concepts thoroughly, and is always willing to go into further detail upon request. He assigns very little homework, leaving the choice of how much to study for a given test almost entirely to the student. He is a very tough grader, but goes to great lengths to ensure dedicated students will pass.
He is an excellent teacher with lots of knowledge. He truly loves what he does and is glad to help however he can. The grade is basically only 3 tests and they are definitely hard. Math is usually easy for me but I failed all 3 tests. Definitely be ready to study to pass.
He is great! If you are confused he tries to help you to your understanding. He gets off topic sometimes and makes jokes but overall he's a good teacher. I would suggest taking him if you're willing to learn, study, work hard and come to class.
Absolutely awful teacher. 3 tests are your entire grade and they are spaced so far you can't remember how to do anything. He goes extremely fasts and rarely slows down for anyone. I would never take him again. I would take literally anyone else.
2 exams and a cumulative final. Optional hw 10% of your grade. If you fail the final you fail the class.
Good guy, not a great teacher. We had very few grades so the tests were very important. He goes very fast and his writing is not good.
He will help you out! Just ask my teacher on HW assignments and youll be fine. He is very interactive and hilarious. Yes he is test heavy but you get points for homework. You can redo homework before it is due.
I will preface this by saying Mr. Smith is a hilarious guy, but as far as his teaching style goes it is very hard to follow and I wouldn't recommend it. He only grades about 4 things per semester (literally), 3 of which are very difficult in person tests that require hours of studying to even pass. He moves very quickly, and I wouldn't recommend.
Hes the type of teacher that is too smart to teach others. Doesnt stop to listen to your questions or concerns. Very FEW TESTS. SO PASS THEM! Records lectures but still unhelpful.
The hardest professor i have ever had. He is a very nice person and easy to talk to but he explains things horribly and his notes are messy. It is like he is teaching himself while also teaching the class.
He was honestly not a lot of help and rambles a lot. You're graded on 3-4 tests with no feedback on them. You basically teach yourself through the homework system. He's also a really slow grader so be prepared. His lectures aren't engaging at all and some of the material may be harder to understand. I think he tries, but it just didn't work.
Loved him as a person but as someone who already doesn't catch on to math easy as is, I found his class to be very difficult. He very vaguely explains things and his tests are unreasonably hard (my tutor graduated from UAB with a math degree and still didn't understand some of the questions that were being asked on the tests). Don't recommend him
Hes a nice person, but very face paced with his teaching. He wasnt very structured or organized with his lesson planning. He doesnt grade too harshly and will give you most points if you have even a little knowledge of what youre doing. I would recommend going to class. I missed one day and he had gone over 4 lessons. Kind of unpredictable.
Rambles too much, gets confused during lecture, makes it harder for you to even understand the math. If you miss one class you're behind. Very hard to catch up, only gives you a few grades, which is two tests, one overall homework grade, mid and final. Makes it very easy for you to do bad. He is a very nice person, but this teaching style was bad.
Mr. Smith is a wonderful teacher and knows what he is talking about, but does not get his point across very well in lectures. He only gives a maximum of 3 tests and a final. The only grades going in are the test grades. Homework is all on HawkesLearning. It was pretty difficult to get your grade up in his class. Do not take if not tech-savvy.
Mr. Smith has been one of my favorite teachers I have had at JSU. He is extremely nice and truly wants to help students who are there to learn. If you have any questions about the homework or a test, go to him during his office hours and he is very willing to help. Be prepared to only take 3 test (including the final) throughout the semester
Never given clear steps to do the math. He's going to show you the way to think about things to get there without memorizing a bunch of stuff- It's the hardest math class I've ever taken, with a deeper understanding of the concepts than ever before. If you struggle, go to office hours because you're not going to get caught up from lectures.
DO NOT TAKE. He is extremely smart but does NOT know how to teach. Horrible at explaining things especially if math is not your best subject. He was super nice, kinda weird, and was accessible outside of class but he was all over the place in lectures. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! He is a super nice guy but you will drown in this class if you aren't familiar with everything already. Take any other professor. Every lecture is way too confusing and you're learning everything as if you want to understand everything about every math detail. too confusing for a student who just took ms112
D.Smith is the worst one that I have ever taken. He is super hard grader and only wants students to solve problems the way he taught. If you don't do so, except to get 6-7 / 10 even though everything is correct. Forget about extra credits, proper explanation of the topics, and timely grading of tests. Don't take him if you have other options.
Nice guy but not a good under grad professors. If you have other options of professors to have for 112 math take them. I did not listen to the other comments and thought I could pass the class we took our final 3 days ago and still don't know if I am going to pass the class. DONT TAKE HIM FOR ANY MATH UNLESS YOUR REALLY GOOD AT MATH.
He gives hard content but he is really good at explaining.
Prof. Daniel Smith is knowledgeable and flexible with scheduling. However, the class is fast-paced and grades solely rely on quizzes and exams. Office hours are available, but be prepared for strict grading. Good for quick learners, tough for others. I have never failed a class I have tried in, but I failed this class even with outside help.
Super nice guy, but is just not the best professor for those who don't excel in math. Sure, I want to know some math, but I don't want to be a mathematician. His lectures make sense for about the first five minutes, then gets distracted and is hard to follow after. I was forced to drop this class even with a consistent tutor. Do not recommend.
Smith's Basic Statistics course heavily weighted tests at 40-45%, neglecting online assignments at 15%. Test date notifications were inconsistent, and study guides were only introduced later. Clearer communication and a balanced grading system are needed for this fast-paced course.
There was only two test and a final the whole semester and was able to receive full credit only on the final. The lectures made sense for about 20 minutes and was lost afterwards.
Professor Smith is knowledgeable but his class is very difficult. The content is challenging, and the grading is strict. If you're not a math whiz, it's easy to get lost. However, the lectures can be helpful if you stay engaged. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for practice problems.
His a good person and can teach, but his canvas setup is horrible, and the grading criteria are confusing; it doesn't have a clear objective on what ur graded by, and he has only tests and exams. The assignments have a lot of problems that don't even go toward your grade; just the test and exams are the only weighted things.
His Canvas setup and the assignments are horrible. There are only tests and exams that are worth 90% of your grade and homework that's only 10%. I don't know what the tests or exams will be about because the material is all over the place, with due dates that don't exist.
There are no clear criteria on the canvas, and there are no assignments that help add to it. A class only where there are tests and exams, where u will use Julia(coding language). I know how to use it, but things happen if u have to take it more likely to be prepared. The teacher is cool and understanding. ik the material, it's just the exam.
The course was disorganized. No study guide, and rarely any type of communication outside of class, where the TEST seems to be made 20 minutes before the test. He gets confused about what we're doing in class and doesn't do anything to help us prepare for the TEST, which has the highest rate of our grade needs to make worksheets at least for us.
