He is an ok teacher....if you take notes and pay attention during the lecture you'll be fine. The class is good... I'd take it again...I never did the readings and I ended up with a B+
He gets a kick out of embarrassing students and is not very helpful. The good thing is that the class was interesting and not too difficult.

He doesn't have much respect for his students and I thought some of his personal comments to the class were offensive. I'm sorry to say that I have less interest in the subject after taking his class.
This class is very boring, and the tests are so esoteric that the only way to get an A is to guess lucky. There are questions about random things that were mentioned maybe once, in lecture or the book. In class he expects us to make obscure leaps of logic to guess what an answer is. I don't like it.
I know alot of people didnt like this class, but I thought that it was ok. If you just study and listen in class you will be ok. He grades on a curve and its usually about 30 points! you can get a C and still get an A. He is extremely smart...published with a degree from yale. Maybe too smart.... :)
Grade based on 3 exams, which makes it hard to do well if you get a bad grade on even one exam.
I had Strouthes for intro to Anthropology-a 100 level class. His tests were ridiculous-he would ask questions on the most minute details, like which hemisphere a tribe that was mentioned in passing during lecture came from. You CANNOT get an A and he does not believe in his students AT ALL.

bad teacher, he is too hard, and likes to pick on people, and helps them to lower their self confidence, the test are stupid with no study guide and who honestly cares about the MacMic people he studied on, maybe he should go teacher at a different college, it would be nice of him!
he is a pathetic teacher. his tests are hard. his notes are the most random things ive seen in my entire life, and his tests are the most random facts that you wouldnt think would be on the test. never take danny strouthes...he has wasted my time. i hate anthro now
he is by far the worst professor i have ever had
pompous. ill directed lectures. incredibly hard exams. unreasonable amounts of readings. his classes seem like they should be grad classes
This is my 7th semester of college, and Dan Strouthes is BY FAR the worst professor I've. He's egotistical, rude, a poor communicator, and accused several people (including me!) of plagiarism, and I may yet get an F in the class because of it! DO NOT TAKE HIM AT ANY COST!
This professor is by far the worst on campus! he is pompus, irrelevant, self-centered, doesn't care a thing about his students, is condescending, and will make you feel stupid at any chance he gets. Class is boring and a waste of your time. Simply, he makes Anthropology and all professors look bad. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!!
Horrible arrogant professor! He belittles his students and makes fun of Eau Claire because it isn't Yale and tells his students they are dumb for choosing to go there! He's unreasonable, assigns ridiculous amounts of readings and hard tests, if you do well he'll accuse you of cheating! Avoid him at all costs, he's the worst I've seen!
He goes by the textbook...if you think the textbook is always right then take classes from him...otherwise hes very boring.
He's rude and bitter, and as far as I can tell, he has no reason to be. He thinks his students are the dumbest on the planet and shows attitude at innapropriate times. If he hates being here so much, then why the hell is he still here? I'm sure none of his students would complain if he left!
Worst teacher ever, rude, and errogant, picks on students of non-caucasion descent. Tests are only on the book material you dont have to attend class to know whats going on. He basically reads you part of the text, you read the rest. Too much reading for a intro class.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Horrible professor. Errogant, rude, tells the worst stories ever (he once told a story of a paraplegic that he thought was FUNNY -a heartless man.) He basically reads from a paper the whole class time. He shows attitude a lot, making comments and glaring at people walking in late. Just plain mean.
Was super interested in anth untill I took him. Whatever you do, do not take him!
Sure, his exams can be insanely tough for an entry-level course but they are curved. If you do the readings, learn the material, go in to see him for help (he's actually very helpful one-on-one) you'll do just fine.
Very open minded to other cultures and differences. Nice guy but a little on the weird side. Pretty cool out of class and easy to talk to. Exams are memorizing and spitting back out. Okay class.
Take at your own risk!

Basically, he's an arrogant jerk who tries to use words that are too big for his mouth. He treats his students like children. His notes are SO random and I understand that he studied his Mic Mac culture, but thats what he bases everything on. I was lookin' forward to the class until I got about 4 weeks in....
awesome
Learned so much!
This guy is REALLY helpful outside of class. Nice guy.
You need to know your stuff so you can suck up to him during class otherwise have fun reading his extremely boring text that he uses a lot of info for his test. He makes no sense most of the time and his notes are very unorganized!! Good luck if you take him!
1) Do not come to class late 2) Do not eat during class 3) Do not talk to your neighbor during class. Those are just some things I've learned in his class, oh, and that culture is learned. This professor is very egotistical and close-minded. Whatever he says is right. Most of the time the students are wrong when you try to answer questions in class
My favorite class this year!
This was one of the most useless classes I've taken so far
Okay, comments about his personality aside (though I do agree with what others have said about it!), the class itself was not that hard. I found it extremely boring and stopped going 2 weeks in; did the assigned readings and got A's on all 3 tests. Seriously, all you have to do is read the book and you will never need to go to class!
This class was easy. You just have to read and show up and listen to the lectures and you will do fine.
He makes stuff up during class. If you are having a discussion be sure to pay attention to what he says but beware - he wont remember it when you put it on your essay so it will still be marked wrong. Learn to love MICMAC. And buy/read all the extra books on the book list. ID q's on the exam are random to the point of being made up.
Pointless class. Love Anthropology, but dreaded coming to this class. Every exam had between a 20-30 point curve. All he talked about was the MICMAC, but never really tells you anything interesting about them. Seems to make up information as he goes along. Argues with students in class who question what he has to say. Terrible class.
I'm in my last semester, and I finally found a really excellent professor at UWEC. I learn so much. Thanks!
He was a horrible teacher. I did all the readings went to class and still couldn't understand the tests. You only get 3 exams and that's your entire grade!
DO NOT TAKE! arrogant prick and sometimes offensive. do not answer questions- you will be wrong- even if you're right. you have to read the whole book, tests are on stuff you never touch on, impossible grader on the essay portion, i walked away very confident with my essay? and got 8/20. AVOID THIS PROF
This teacher is ridiculous. I would let everyone know NOT to take this teacher. He made up a fact that broccoli was an artificial vegetable created by a certain Mr. Broccoli in the early 1900's. This is completely made up. Why would you make stuff like that up? terrible teacher..
He is a horrilbe teacher. He wants you to participate in class, however, if you do, he downs what you say. Even if it is directly out of the textbook. He has three tests which are basically absorb and repeat. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
Not a good prof at all. His lectures are very dull and boring. His tests are crazy, but if you study and pay attention in class you'll do fine with the curve. The curves are usually 20-30% so that's really nice. Basically all you have to do to get an A is show up and read the Langness readings and you'll do fine. He is an awful prof though.
It is obvious he cares about the MICMAC. Be prepared to listen to boring lectures and read the text and then regurgitate what you momorized. There is no real thinking in his class. If he calls on you for an answer, make sure you know it, or he will humilate you. DON'T TAKE HIM

Strouthes is obviously knowledgeable and really wants students to learn and be engaged. He tries, but he's just not interesting. The text is extremely dry and unorganized, so the lectures are the same. Only grades are from the three exams. He grades fairly and on a curve. Just not the experience I had hoped for in Anth. *NT
Strouthes is a great teacher. Thanks to AIS 325, I understand much more than I used to about Native American cultures and how to approach learning about them. He knows how to make things clear and gives clear advice on how to study for the tests, so the ball is in the student's court.
DON'T TAKE HIM. He is way too biased on what he teaches. If you contradict him in any way, he will be sure to humiliate you and without actually saying the words, call you an idiot! He doesn't teach you the text or help you to understand it better. All he does is tell stories from his younger days and of his beloved MICMAC.
Anthropology 161 AKA Micmac 161 is a terrible class. The entire grade is based on three tests which are ridiculous for an intro class. And he wears the same sweatervest everyday, enjoy guys.
I think that he is a great teacher and is very intelligent. I really enjoyed his class. I recommend taking a class with him if you are the type of person that likes lectures. Your grade is based on 3 tests and nothing more. If you do, be sure to read all of the chapters he assigns because a lot of the questions on the test are based on the chapters
He seems to be a very intelligent professor, but he doesn't do a very good job at passing along his knowledge to his students. The text book will put you to sleep. His lectures are unorganized and the tests are impossible for and intro course. 80 multiple choice and 2 essays in 50 mins is setting up failure. I dont recommend taking him.
By far the worst professor I've ever had in college. Made me want to rip my eyeballs out after only 50 minutes. He's not helpful, he thinks he knows everything, and makes you feel like an idiot. His exams are IMPOSSIBLE. don't even bother studying he'll ask you random questions you've never even seen before. very unorganized. STAY AWAY.
I definitely did not learn a thing in this class! I know my heritage of course but when he asked me about it I was wrong.. I guess he knows me better than I do. Definitely a biased professor, and avoid him at all costs!
Oh, dear. Strouthes is extremely passionate about his subject. Don't be surprised if you get at least 2 emails a day from him. Still, I didn't learn very much from him. His lectures really aren't that bad; he's an amusing character, just not a very good teacher. I definitely skipped class more than I went.
He certainly has a lot to say about the MICMAC people. He is the kind of professor that wants you to digest the information and spew it out on his tests. Does not appreciate free thought in any way.
Really fun class!
I went into Anth 161 ready to learn about the human race, but found Strouthes blindly reading off definitions of random words and locations of random tribes fround in the text. The textbook used is HORRENDOUS and I caught him several times reading, word for word, content from the book. Never take this prof, for you will get nothing out of him.

Made me lose faith in liberal arts. And the tenure system. If it wasn't the irrelevant, rambling, lectures that made me hate this class, it was the fact that not a single person learned anything. He curves each test somewhere around 30 points and students still get D's. He clearly doesn't care about 100 level courses.
Annoying, but somewhat commical. LOVES the Micmac. If you go to class and take good notes and study them before tests you will be fine.
Do yourself a favor and TAKE THIS CLASS!! Great info and stories bring other peoples to life!
Seemed like a nice guy at first, then he opened his mouth. His Mic-Mac stories are funny, and make him see friendly but he is very pretentious and is NEVER wrong. Lectures are only 50 min but terribly boring and unorganized. The textbook is a heinous crime. Avoid this class with Strouthes, and take with a different professor.
If you read all the books and attend most of the classes, you'll do fine. He really understands what he's talking about because he has done this for most of his life. If you're really interested in the material, it'll be a great class.
Do read any of the text books. Write down what he says word for word. Regurgitate what you wrote down in class and you'll get 80's on the test with little studying. Easy class, bad professor. He goes as far to say that anthropology is a science and actually matters. Don't ever speak in class.
If you attend class, take notes, and read the book you will be fine. The problem with his discussions is most of it is irrelevant and about micmac. He does not prepare you for tests or even give you a heads up for when they are coming. Also, he tends not to value or listen to his students opinions. I do not recommend this professor.
Your grade is out of 3 tests, 33.3% each.Tests are impossible to finish on time the way Strouthes wants you to.His solution to this is giving ~30 pt curves on every test. This can make for an easy A if you pay attention and take notes. Strouthes will put you to sleep with his arrogant attitude towards students and lack of organization.
I wasn't impressed in this teacher, he's arrogant, he doesn't really explain anything well, he's unorganized, but he does grade on a huge curve. I'd say this class is easy enough if you just need a GE considering, I failed my test and still ended up getting an A because of his curve. He is a really frustrating teacher but it's an easy A
I advise against taking classes with Dr. Strouthes because he acted disrespectfully toward others and didn't seem to care very much for his students. The class was one of the worst experiences I've had at EC.
He can come across a bit arrogant at times and has high expectations for his students. Didn't really read the text book and still did well on the tests. His stories are actually somewhat interesting. My advice is come in with an open mind and you'll find it interesting- at least I did!
I don't get why people say his class is so hard. He curves every test so much its almost impossible to get a bad grade. I mean sure the tests are hard but the curve helps a lot. He is pretty interesting I think, I would take him again. Just make sure you skim through the book and know your notes and you will get at least a B.
He was very condescending, the text used was outdated and really expensive. The tests were extremely challenging, you'd have to memorize every detail of the reading to do well, and the reading was about 300+ pages/test. Try to get into other anth classes if interested in the topic, you won't learn anything and it'll just hurt your GPA!!
I found the content of the class very interesting but REALLY didn't like professor Strouthes! He comes off as kind of a jerk sometimes and had crazy expectations for the exams. The reading is insane for a 3 credit class and didn't help me AT ALL when it came time to take the tests. I recommend the class but with a different professor.
Lectures are interesting and easy to follow but exams are a nightmare. Q's from exams require lots of notes from lecture and reading, more so than any other class I have personally ever had. Professor has a unique personality which I think can be misconstrued with arrogance.
Strouthes' exams are semi-hard because every little detail he says in lecture could be on the exam... unfair too since it is 90 questions and an essay in an hour. Benefit is that there is a huge curve because everyone does horrible lol. So it is easy to get an A, but the class is frustrating. Plus he always seems way too superior to students.
Dr Strouthes is interesting, but tough. This is a class to make sure to attend, take good notes and study! He is a very interesting individual, and his stories are always good. He demands respect, which is good, but I think that people take this as arrogance. He is actually very nice and helpful. I am a nontrad with memory issues, and I did okay.
probably the worst professor i have ever had! he is extremely condescending. exams are very hard with very specific questions in them. i found him rude and would never recommend taking a class with him!
He skips around a lot on his topic in lectures, so sometimes he'll say one thing about one tribe and not clarify which tribe he's talking about. So it's kind of a jumbled mess. He paces a lot with his head down when he's talking. And when he talks, the ends of his sentences stray off so you never really catch everything he says.
There's a TON of reading. And honestly, if you just read some of the material from the main large textbook and take notes during his boring lectures, you'll be fine. Just spark note and look up notes online for the rest of the books and you'll be fine.
I would not take a class with Dr. Strouthes again. His tests are difficult, which is fine, but they're that much harder when he just lectures. He doesn't use any visual aid whatsoever. His arrogance is irritating. The readings were at least usually interesting. This was only a 50 minute lecture, but most days it felt like forever.
Rarely does he cover content in class that will be on an exam. Be prepared for tons of reading outside of class. He does NOT use d2l. Had 4 tests and a paper due and that's it for grading. Would not recommend taking cultural anthropology with him as a professor. Also the required book is not a free rental and will cost you over a $100.
This class could have been interesting with a different prof. He is so condescending and critical it made class horrible. He will ask for questions & if you answer wrong he will call you out in front of the class. You will need to read for the essay on the test, the rest of the test is easy, lectures are very boring & pointless.
Strouthes' lectures are very boring and he tries to tell a joke everyday, but they are very rarely funny. He does not care about the students' interests and most of what he says in lectures is straight out of the book. If you like reading take this class, read the textbook, skip class, and get an A. Also, does not like technology and won't use d2l.
Good professor, don't need to read the textbook if you go to his lectures. Grade is based off of 3 tests and a research paper. The paper is fairly easy and the tests are hard. He makes up for the difficulty of the tests with a nice curve. This class is easy to get an A in if you take notes in class and lightly review before the tests.
The lectures are pretty dry and very easy to not pay attention in.
Tests are hard but I didn't read the book and still passed
This class was for Museum Curation; no textbook at all (only online readings). I think this was the most disorganized class I have ever been in; not only was there very little direction, he gives three projects at the last minutes (last few weeks). This class could be awesome; I took it because I wanted to learn how to curate a museum; stressful.
100% would not recommend him! Lectures are extremely unstructured and boring. Gives three tests that are extremely hard and are on very specific details. It also doesn't help that this class material is very boring.
He assigned more reading than any one will realistically complete and he doesn't give rubrics for assignments just a short one sentence description. Ex. Write a research paper from a non western source. That is the only information he gives. No page requirement or anything. But if you write one under 12 pgs he'll tell you it needs to be longer.
Strouthes is very unorganized. Therefore, the note taking process is hard to follow. Studying notes will not help with exams. 70-90 questions long including an essay question. There are 3 exams and one paper. So, it's hard to bank on other grades. Very nice guy, but considering the lack of information to do well, that doesn't make a good professor.
Strouthes gives 3 exams through the semester including the final which total 90% of your grade. His lectures are just him standing in front of the class talking with no organization or visual aids. He teaches through stories. His stories are great but not an effective way to learn. The textbook is ridiculously drawn out.
While he seems knowledgeable on the subject he is incredibly unorganized and arrogant. Taking notes in this class is a joke because it's so difficult to decipher what's important. The tests are difficult and large, lost of misleading true or false, and questions that have content that has never been brought up or in the book.
The class consists of only exams and one paper, which doesn't test your knowledge whatsoever. You have to keep up with the textbook if you want an A in this class, some answers on his exams consist of things he never even lectured on. He's very condescending and doesn't use presentations so you have to listen word for word. Tough class.
Very knowledgable about different cultures but not a great professor. Does not use power points, just talks all class and can tend to go all over the place so notes won't always make sense. Graded only on 3 tests and 1 paper. Tests are hard, asked random questions but short answer are usually from the extra readings assigned. Does not use D2L.
Dr. S. gets a bad rep because he's more of an old school teacher. He's a brilliant professor and scholar with a unique personality. The content was a bit dry at times, nonetheless, he knows it well. He is willing to help and offer advice for grad school, you just have to talk to him. Read and attend lecture and you will be okay.
I was really excited about this class, but disappointed once I completed it and felt like I didn't learn a single thing. I went to class everyday. Many people went once a week and were not penalized. Tests were not on the material covered in class.
He is so knowledgable and I definitely respect him for that, but I really wouldn't recommend this class. He is definitely not the most structured, which makes staying on top of things pretty hard. Lots of reading on top of the lengthy textbook, too.
I took this class and was extremely excited about it when I started. Oooh boy did I have a big storm coming. I paid almost $100 for a USED text book that I haven't opened once, didn't even need it. He is so knowledgeable but he rambles and I can't follow allow in his lecture. No powerpoints and doesn't use D2L. 3 tests and 1 paper, no other grades.
He is a very nice person and is very knowledgeable about many things. However, he tells many different stories and it is very hard to follow what is being said and it is hard to understand what exactly we are learning in class. This can make it difficult to understand what is on tests.
Strouthes tells stories almost the whole time in lecture, no power points or anything. It made it really hard to learn/stay awake and eventually I just stopped going because he didnt take attendance. I honestly just guessed on all the tests and barely tried on the paper and I ended up with a B. Also dont bother getting the textbook, didnt use it
Lectures meant nothing when it came to the 3 exams. Can totally skip all the time and still get at least a B.
You are only graded on 3 ecams and a paper. The lectures are kind of interesting but not really, take good notes in lecture and study those notes and you will do great. DO NOT buy the textbook! You do not need to read the chapters. This professor puts HUGE curves on each exam, my first exam I got a C+ and with the curve an A-. Study your notes!
Mr. Strouthes is an old man who does not use powerpoint of the schools online-based system to communicate with students. All lectures are vocally based and he uses no other resources to help. Expects you to read a lot, but with some common sense guessing and paying half attention to the lectures, I passed very easily.
I respect Dr. Strouthes and his knowledge but I seriously think he shouldn't be a professor. He tells stories about his personal research experience for 50% of the lectures and that material isn't on the test at all. Doesn't use powerpoints or post notes so you're literally on your own for everything. Also doesn't use D2L. AVOID taking him!
