Hes a great professor who cares about the success of his students. He ensures his students understand the material and presents it in a way that is clear and easy to understand. He also responds to emails at a faster rate than most professors so that is a huge plus.
He's good at teaching, very chill and he tries to help make you understand the problem.
Real understanding teacher does his best to help you get the best score possible definitely one of the better teachers at merced College.
Ive never enjoyed going to math lectures before but Swenson lectures are very understanding . He allows us to ask questions and gives great understanding responds to make sure slides and lectures are clearly understood. Quizzes and exams are well reviewed before due dates with practical exams to practice. Applys reality mathematical problems usage
He is a really good professor! Definitely wants his students to pass where he is willing to work with you. And after each quiz and exam he gives helpful feedback to why the answer is what it is. By far one of the best professors Ive taken and would take again.
He is a great professor that cares about his students. He is very helpful . I would take him again, best math professor I've taken.
Swenson is empathetic to all students including non Math/Stem Majors. He explains most things mathematically and then visually. I enjoyed his mathematical humor and analogies. My favorite quote " In the real world a computer program does all this for you, but in the math 10 world, we must understand conceptually to formulate. " (not direct quote!)
Very helpful professor. He make class easy with his leacture notes.
Near the end of the semester attendance was very low. Lectures were repeated for student absences. Then the lessons for Chapters 7 & 8,that were the most confusing, were rushed to make up for the repeated lessons. Also the rest of the lessons for Chapter 10, 11 & 12 were rushed. Final exam was not formatted like the other exams.
Good teacher. Difficult lecture examples but easy-ish tests.
Professor Swenson is really a great prof. He is by far the best Math prof i have ever taken at Merced College. He keeps class fun with humor, and his teaching style is very entertaining. He really cares about his students, and wants us to do well, unlike other Math prof's that torture you for their own pleasure. Daniel is awesome!!
Took this course to transfer over to university. With my past experiences with community college professors I had really low expectations and was ready to have to teach myself the material. I was very lucky to have Professor Swenson because he knows his stuff and genuinely cares about his students. I highly recommend taking him!!! Great Professor!!
Professor Swenson has been the best Math Professor i have ever taken at Merced College period! I wish i could go back in time and have him teach all my previous math classes. Really great teacher and if you have a chance to take him, do it you wont regret it.
Level of Difficulty was a 3 because the material itself is challenging. The instructor didn't rush the class, gave time for extra help, and was very clear about what would be on the exams. He made a difficult subject much easier.
Professor Swenson by far is the greatest math professor I had. He was super nice, sarcastic at times but very helpful. His material was very straight-forward.
Professor Swenson made calculus 2 workable. He gave step by step instructions. He made class go by fast. I enjoyed it.
Relatively easy class, he explains everything well, and is very receptive to late work etc. He genuinely wants his students to pass and learn.
HILARIOUS and cool. Sometimes he forgets that we don't know what he's talking about and he keeps going on about stuff and doesn't stop to check for understanding. I don't think he does it on purpose though. If you don't know something, ask. Otherwise, don't blame him for you grade. He's very helpful and through when explaining. Very kind. Recommend
Professor Swenson, is a great professor, and he for sure wants students to pass his class, very kind person and always with a smile on his face. His exams are graded by points, which means you need to show work or you will get 0 points, but they are straight foward.
Very good professor, fair grading and extra credit is welcome. 5/5 would recommend.
Very good professor. Cares about his student's progress. He consistently reminds his class to reach out to him via e-mail or get help in the Math Lab. You shouldn't miss any class or else you'll fall behind. The lectures feed into one another. DON'T SKIP CLASS!
The professor is funny and since it was his first time teaching the course he did pretty good. I did mind the amount of math problems he assigned but at the end you are about to understand the concept more. If he teaches this course again I think the use of activities during class would help the class understand the concept more.
I REALLY ENJOY PROFESSOR SWENSON I HAD HIM FOR MATH-62 AND MATH-10. IF I HAD ANOTHER MATH CLASS TO TAKE I WOULD CHOSE HIM AGAIN.
Is able to explain difficult math concepts in an understandable way.
Great processer understands when you can't make it to class or need to change exam
I took him for my second attempt for linear algebra and was not disappointed. He's an applied mathematics major all the application problems he would give us would actually make sense or at the very least give us a view on whats going on. Would recommend for everyone except pure math majors tho since he skips on proofs sometimes.
I took his Math 10 and it was okay. The professor is kinda awkward, but it's whatever. Math is hard in general, but if you do your homeworks and you do his study guides then you'll do just fine for the exams. One of the nicest Professor ever, he lets you use notes for the exam so that's a plus for us.
Merced college is lucky to have him! He is very understanding, funny, smart and knows what he is doing. This semester has been tough for me & i expressed this to him & he was very understand of my situation & helped as much as he could. Sometimes he talks to us like were his UC students but he is sure to help us understand.
Cool guy. He lets you know exactly what to study for exams, provides study guides and he is always available for your questions . If you do the footwork you will get an A . He actually curved our class, which was awesome . TAKE HIM!!
I took this class with 95s, and I'm glad I did. This was a difficult class for me and having the extra time during 95s to ask questions really helped me. He provided clear direction on what to study and was more than happy to help students understand the material.
Great Professor. Lectures are clear and thorough. Class isn't difficult. You earn your grade. Students have plenty of time to complete homework. For exam, it's usually 1 problem per section. You do your part and the exam isn't too hard . If you want to actually learn and worry less about exam, Professor Swenson is the professor for you.
For being a math class online, it was fairly easy to follow the lectures the professor created. I would highly recommend taking his Linear Algebra class.
Professor Swenson is an overall great Professor, he would always email us(students) when any things were being updated. He will always get back to you when it was possible for him. Exams and quizzes weren't long and best part is that on exams, he gives you a chance to submit an appeal to get more points, but full work and explanation will be needed
Professor Swenson cares for his students for keeping up with them and having at least 2 zoom meetings for us students to join and ask questions if we have some. He moves exam little later or next day if needed(reasonable reason). Overall I would definitely take his class again, his teaching isn't difficult to understand.
I had Professor Swenson for Summer Math 08. Since it was online it was different from a traditional math class. However he handled the class very well and still taught over math videos and offered Zoom meetings. He answered emails right away too. He is very passionate about math and engineering subjects. Thank you very being a good teacher.
Professor Swenson is by far one of the best professors I've had throughout my academic career. The lectures are clear and easy to understand with examples. It prepares you efficiently for the homework and there are a sufficient amount of ways to prepare for a test/quiz for the class. Office hours were during the morning, afternoon ones may be added
Even though online learning has been challenging, professor Swenson does his best. His lectures contain many examples which are also on the book. I wouldn't say the textbook is necessary but it can be useful if you decide to follow along. You can always email him if you have any questions and he gets back you pretty fast. Not too much hw either.
Professor Swenson was amazing while I had him for my 6-week statistics class. As long as you turned in your homework, which you can do until you get 100% and is most of your grade, then you should pass no problem. He was great to work with my work schedule as quizzes and exams had a 3 hour window to be taken. He also gives an extra credit project.
The Math-10 class was simple and clear. I appreciate how homework was worth a bigger portion of the grade than tests. The class was mainly prerecorded lectures, mymathlab homework, quizzes, and three tests. I took the 8-week course. He has office hours that change weekly. There was a large extra credit project but I could not get ahold of my group.
Wasn't very caring or flexible.
He was by far one of the best Math teachers I have ever taken! I took this class online, 8 weeks long. Hard course but go over his powerpoints and youll do good. He opened up old homework assignments so we can redo the problems we got wrong. He offered EC. He worked around my work schedule and assigned quizzes/test when I was available! Recommend!
An amazing professor, calc II is hard but Swenson presents it an easy and feasible fashion. Lectures are not very in depth, so be prepared to learn on your own as well. Exam and quiz problems are exactly based on HW & practice problems, and homework is not excessive. He is incredibly flexible & understanding with testing times. Worth taking!
This is the hardest I've ever tried for a class. I have over 70 pages of notes I took for this class. His class structure is very good, homework due on Sundays and 2 tests each chapter. No surprises. He is also open to partial credit for tests so this is very helpful and he is willing to work around your schedule as much as he can. Overall great.
He is a great professor, tries to help you out as , much as he can. Lectures are recorded and easy to understand.
I am currently taking Math 10 and he has been super accommodating to my schedule, adjusting several quiz times to fit my schedule, and has been very understanding about it. I definitely would recommend taking a class from Professor Swenson.
This teacher is very accommodating and whatnot. But it seems many people are getting a good teacher and an EASY A confused If you take this class I'm sure you will get an A because he lets you group up on quizzes But, he goes the lazy route and uses MyMathLab and barely teaches half the material on the hw, you will have to teach yourself most of it
I felt like I had to figure out most things by myself & at times it was stressful. The lectures sometimes didnt help exactly with what was on the homework. Other than that, there were few assignments, and due dates were flexible with my schedule since most of it was due Sunday and plenty of time to complete exams.
The lectures are very lengthy, but we had 2 weeks to do the assignment. All the homework was through the MyLab and that had extra help too. It's not too much, as long as you don't procrastinate. You can also join his office hours. It still took up a lot of my time personally, but it's a good class if you like learning on your own with his videos!
Homework was worth more points that the tests and quizzes
Online math course with online text and assignments. Prof had good PowerPoints and lecture videos to go with them. My only struggle was that tests could only be taken during a small window on 1 specific day, but he would work with you and adjust the window if you let him know in advance. Assignments were spread out and not overwhelming.
Pretty good professor, gave pre-recorded lectures that were related to the homework and exams. For this class, I often found myself teaching myself, and the lectures sometimes didn't cover the homework as well as I would have liked. The class was time consuming since I would procrastinate. His class would be a cake walk if you do your work on time.
I took MATH 08 - Linear Algebra as an online summer course. The material was fairly difficult and time-consuming, but Professor Swenson's videos were helpful. He is a caring teacher who wants his students to be successful, and he encourages students to reach out with any questions. Highly recommend!
Great professor! Took him over summer.
Prof. Swenson was quick to respond to student emails and would provide good feedback when asked. However, his lecture videos are very old and are not engaging. I found it impossible to sit through those lectures. He might want to record new lectures. Also, maybe be less liberal with MyMathLab (too easy scoring with "view an example"). Thanks prof.
Pretty good professor, replies fast on pronto if you need help. Every lecture video/slides throughout the semester is posted in the beginning but I often taught myself when the lecture didnt cover a certain topic. The quizzes/exams are easy since it is always covered in the study guide. Also offers extra credit but I didnt need it.
Good professor, no problems whatsoever.
He's a really good professor, I just wish he made class a little longer like 30mins more specifically so he can go over homework problems. He is consistent with his teaching and easy to understand. He is also available after class and answers questions. He is never rude, very professional and post practice exams so you don't walk in blind for test.
I would absolutely take the professor again. He's a fast grader and interest in what he teaches. Rec: Read section 1 of the book. As the material becomes abstract, view homework examples to gain an understanding. Watch 3Blue1Brown Linear Algebra for a visual understanding Use online calc. for tedious homework Do: practice exams Don't: procrastinate
Jusst do HW takes 1 hour to finish, easy A
Overall, Professor Swenson is a really good teacher, be prepared to be hands-on and do examples in front of the class but get a real takeaway from the classes. We were allowed to use calculators and a page of notes on extremely helpful for exams, and he was always available outside of class if needed any extra clarity.
I enjoyed Proffessor Swenson. I took math 25 trig. I did not take the class for a grade. As a math major I took the class to learn, and I feel he did an excellent Job
Super smart guy, helped me get more passionate about math. He knows his stuff. He gives very clear lectures and always leaves time for questions or clarification.
Awesome Professor! Very smart and never SETS TRAPS! Would definitely like to have him for all my other math courses.
Professor Swenson makes math a little less scary. During class, students do some group work to solve problems collectively on the board and this actually really helped me understand the problems better. He goes beyond just textbook slides and is super funny which made the class more entertaining.
he is supper funny, easy to approach and understanding. His exams are multiple choice but will give you credit for showing your work if you don't get the answer right.
This is for Math-32 probability and statistics. Great professor, very knowledgeable. Readily available for help and offers lots of supplemental resources to better help understand the topic. 10/10 would definitely recommend!
Review for Math-32 Probability and Statistics I like that Mr.Swenson's class is very structured. I like how there are never any surprise assessments or assignments. Sometimes it's hard for me to learn from the lectures, but if I work on examples, with his guidance, I learn a lot.
Professor Swenson was really good at explaining complicated concepts. He is a really easy going guy, and I would totally reccomend him; especially for this course. The quizzes were taken in groups, and we always got review before the exam. This course seems really abstract in the first few weeks, but later on gets easier.
This man singlehandedly saved me; math is an extremely tough subject for me and I found Professor Swenson to be extremely helpful and clear with his teaching. He is my hero and I am actively trying to find where he purchases his clothing, his swag is genuinely immeasurable.
The class was good and the quiz/assignments weren't too stressful and it was all explained well.
Gives feedback to what you did in your homework. good
He doesn't in lectures so prepare to be lost. You can get the same experience doing this course online so don't waste your time waking up early to go to class. I will say he is good when it comes to an easy passing grade consider that most of his grading is hw, quizzes are in groups, and exams are graded in the effort to try.
Hands down one of the Chadest math professors at Merced College. I reccomend going to the lectures, he's funny and a wonderful teacher that WANTS you to understand the material which can be difficult and abstract in the beginning. Decent amount of homework and gives (Optional) group quizzes which imo is MUCH MUCH better than individual quizzes.
The class is pretty easy to go through if you don't miss his lectures. He's pretty chill and doesn't make the class intimidating or stressful to go through.
not good in explaning but he is funny and his quiz are not hard we do group work exams are multiple choice
Professor Swenson is Top-Tier. His lectures are designed to be as simple and engaging as possible. He also allows students to form groups during quizzes to guarantee passing grades and makes learning Calculus, not an intimidating subject. I strongly suggest registering for his course and participating in classroom discussions. - Miguel Marquez
he is awesom he is really good in grading stuff.he let us do quiz in group that is best his exams are really easy really good in grading .just do his homework you can get easy B. do his that extra credit presentation that is great .take calculus 1 and 2 from him .
I recommend every student to take this class with Prof Swenson. He does a lot to ensure that every student has a fair chance at getting a good grade. I'm definitely taking as many math classes as I can with him!
Great professor, really helps you understand the material especially later in the semester
very understanding & willing to help
Good professor, flexible to your needs. He definitely has a slower paced lecture so it can be difficult to follow if you're used to faster paced classes. Takes a while to understand what he is talking about at times.
He's a super nice and friendly guy, but lectures are too slow. hw is way harder than the tests. don't think I can really say I learned that much calculus, tho. Very easy and lenient grader, so you shouldn't have a problem getting the grade you want. idk I just couldn't vibe with his teaching style.
I have taken Calculus with a couple different professors and Swenson was by far the best. He gives you enough homework to help you understand the material but doesn't overwhelm you with work. He is always available if you need extra help and really tries to make sure everybody understands and is able to pass.
-no extra credits -grading is lenient and review true to the exam - most of the hw had about 10-20 questions and exams can be executed if you done review. hw is enough to grasp the materials - good way stay track with this course by go every class - sometimes have 3 to 4 problems from the homework/practice review solved for you on the board
I took his in-person Calc 1 (Math 4A) class. Lecture attendance is part of your grade. Lectures are good and he's helpful if you ask questions. Quizzes were open notes and you can work in a group. His tests weren't too difficult. He offers extra credit, including a big end-of-semester optional group project that was worth half a letter grade.
Professor Swenson made math more enjoyable! Due to having homework time in class, we as students could correct our mistakes and learn from them! I'd say he is hilarious at times and teaches the class very well! If you hated math, Professor Swenson would turn that around! HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Will be taking him for all of my math classes!
Great Professor
Professor Swenson is an excellent teacher. He does a great job of ensuring everyone in the class has a fair chance of getting a good grade. He is a pretty laid-back teacher so it's easy to understand everything that is being taught. I highly recommend this teacher to any student who is planning to take any math classes.
He will work with you. Dedicates half the class to answer questions and work on homework.
Professor Swenson knows the subject is hard and tries his hardest to make sure that students understand the subjects. He hosts tutoring in the library, and he dedicates half the class time to helping you with the homework, occasionally his lectures are confusing but he finds ways to make it click. Plus he's funny. Loved his class.
He really wants his students to succeed. Homework is easy to complete since half of class is dedicated to working on it together. Quizzes are done in groups, can use notes and work with other groups. As long as you make a cheat sheet and do the study guide, exams aren't difficult. Very lenient with grading exams. Mainly teaches through examples.
Pretty chill and doesn't grade to harshly. Im taking him again next semester.
I want others to know about this professor is that he is a really great professor to have if your stressed about math related class.
Swenson is an amazing professor and is perfect in every way. Exams are a full 8.5-11 double sided for notes and only 3 exams, no EC but quizs are open note-book and groups of up to 6. Homework isn't hard and unlimited attempts. No late work. Sometimes he can be hard to understand, but it's calculus, so don't let that scare you away. He is great!
Overall pretty good professor, my only gripe was his attendance policy. While attendance wasn't mandatory he would say that we could have more quizzes if attendance was low for multiple lectures in a row, which to me didn't make sense considering his lectures were PPT based and they were all on canvas. Other than that pretty good, would take again.
Great professor. Tries to make math as stress-free as possible. Always makes himself available for help. Good lecturer, has online prerecorded lectures available. Does group quizzes with open notes. Exams are relatively easy compared to other math professors. Takes student feedback into consideration. Would take him for all math classes if I could.
I had the privilege of taking one of Swenson's last classes at MC, he's amazing, makes a hard subject ok. Some of the best online content too. I don't know if you're ever going to teach again so this might be a pointless rating, but I know you're the type of guy to read your RMP comments at the end of every semester. Thanks for the great semester.
Just ok, nothing inspiring. Pacing of the class wasn't good in terms of exam dates, and material had to be skipped near the end to accommodate for course completion.
Professor Swenson is a great resource for calculus success. His lectures can be slow-paced, but he's flexible and encourages group work on quizzes and homework. unstuckstudy was a lifesaver for exam prep alongside the textbook.
I took this professor in the summer. He was going thought some mental problems and this was going back to to be a professor after 2 year I think. he was at his 50% but he was still a good professor. He gave a lot of time to do homework and to practice for exams and quizzes. He also give time to do practice time with friends and others.
