Dr. Ullman is a great professor and a great lecturer. His class was very interesting, and he devotes a lot of time to helping students.

For intro classes, like Calc 31, stay away from him like the plauge. He's extremely smart.... but that doesn't make a difference in lower level classes... esp. when things are inadiquately explained.
Professor Ullman has been the worst for me ever. Just because he's very intelligient doesn't mean that he has any clue in how to explain concepts to non-math majors. Stay as far away as possible from this sour apple. You'll always regret it if you don'
I loved this class! He's an awesome down to earth professor who wears socks with Birkenstocks. If you need to take a math requirement but aren't a math major, take math 710
Just don't do it
Great prof to learn interesting things from...he is very responsive to his students
wow that girl below is in love with ullman, who wouldnt be???? Hes amazing and funny I love his math jokes!! I wish he was my dad seriously
I had Prof Ullman for both MATH31 and 32. His lectures are very clear, and you gotta luv the math jokes :-P You have hw and quizzes every week so it keeps you on the ball. He's not the easiest prof in the world, tests can be tricky but you learn lots
Of all the math professors you will have at GW he is by far the best. Very interesting, helpful, amazing professor. Likes the subject and his students. His quizzes and exams aren't easy you need to understand the material. You will always love the lecture
Dr. Ullman does not make the class easy unless you are willing to work. If you put in the time and effort, he will make sure you understand the material. There was no textbook, so he made the class comprehensive
Even if it doesn't sound like hard math, it will be. Stay away unless you're a math major.
NICE GUY, BUT HE IS ONE HARD MOFO
class is interesting, has good math jokes, quizzes and homeworks are easy so is the midterm. WATCH OUT FOR THE FINAL its toughness extreme!!!!
great for math in politics - so passionate and excited and willing to make you get excited
Nice guy, but cant teach, test are ridiculous
he will make you learn but he is not easy he will make you learn and work hard. he is also very helpful make sure you use his office hours they will get you much farther
This man IS math...he is clear and sooo helpful outside of class. I hate math and loved Ullman. Very approachabl and so so sooo helpful outside of class.
He rarely went over all of the material necessary to complete homework assignments. Additionally, the assignments were heavily based in proofs, which he did not adequately prepare us for. I do not recommend taking a class that he teachs.
He's a nice guy but a terrible professor. Assigns homework on things he doesn't teach and the tests are extremely bad. No good for people with little or no good background in the subject.
He explains things fairly well, and what you dont pick up from lecture you can get from discussion. His tests are hard, but if you do the work you'll be fine. He's very approachable about any problems as well and his classes arent too boring.
Dr. Ullman is the best math teacher I've had at GW. His tests and HW are hard, but he is very available for help. If you go to his office hours, he will really help you with anything you are having trouble with. He took extremely abstract material and made it approachable. Great Professor!!!
Great professor. Very clear and easy to understand. Gives plenty of examples. Tests and h/w are hard, but grades on an adapted curve (80%=A). Very open to help students, too!
Great professor, much better than the rest of the department. His quizes and homeworks really prepare you, so around midterm time you won't have to put in more than an hour or two reviewing old notes and still ace it. His finals are infamously difficult. My advice: get a tutor...you'll get an A
went to office hours almost every time, got around 50 percents on midterm and final and 90% avg on quiz and got a B+. Excellent teacher, the best out of the math department. Challenging as well, he knows math so intuitively well.
if he's still offering mathematics of social choice, take it. its easy and kinda fun especially if you're not a math person. i took it the first time it was offered and he was a little panicy but made math as painless as possible. hes an all around great guy
This guy changed my entire way of thinking about math.. he got me to see math.. i could visualize a function, even in 3d... i feel it was him that set me on the path towards 3d animation.. he is a hard teacher, but well worth it, and very helpful if you need the help...
He is a great teacher. He'll make you think like a mathematician, but bad in grading, and quizes are hard.
Cool class, interesting subject, but it was all really really hard.
Math and Politics is not an easy A but Ullman makes it interesting and its better than sitting in a boring class doing calculus all yur life. There are only 5 homework assignments and either he or the TA (I had Rebecca and she was awesome) are totally approachable for help.
Hard class, must attend class to have any idea about the course.
"Math and Politics" is great for IAFF people like me who hate math, but it is definitely more math than politics. Interesting material. Lectures are sometimes unclear but he posts lecture notes on BB which help a lot. Fair grader with a nice curve. TA Rebecca was awesome. If you need to fill your IAFF math/science GCR, look no further.
Prof. Ullman is a nice guy. His tests can be kind of tough, but he's a very nicy grader (he curves so no one fails). His lectures can be boring, but if your write down his notes, you'll do well. Plus, he posts them on BB. Homework is moderately difficult, but not impossible. I don't like math, but this wasn't too bad for me.
Ullman is the hardest math teacher at GW. He even admits that he makes hard tests. He is helpful, and relatively clear in lectures, but you should take another professor whose tests won't****you! Only people who are reeeaally good at math will get an A. Otherwise you'll probably get a B or C with the curve (with a raw score of 45-55 on exams)
Ullman not a very good teacher at all. His lectures are mind-numblingly boring. And at first glance, his tests may look short and easy, but they are actually VERY hard and nearly impossible to get an A on. Plus, because he's head of the Math department, he's hardly ever in his office if you need help.
Horrible at teaching. He makes everything 100 times more complicated then it is and makes even the simplest concepts impossible to understood. everything he writes is confusing and incomprehensible. Avoid this professor, avoid this class, you will not get a good grade and you will not understand anything.
He is good at heart and means well. Tries to help but it is extremely hard to follow his train of thought. He is just VERY confusing. Oh yeah and his tests are incredibly difficult, impossible to do well on.
Class is somewhat interesting, but hard to follow. Repetition of material is crucial to understanding. Helps you when you need it, which can be often. Tests and homeworks are challenging, so he scales accordingly -- 80% and above in the class is A territory. Attendance is strongly recommended, because his notes on Blackboard are hard to decipher.
A decent man and a big curve, but still very difficult. Worth taking if you have some time to devote to math and politics.
He is a nice guy but impossible to learn from. He talks in circles and is SO boring. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. It turned into multistep logic proofs!
he wrote the textbook so class isnt hard if you can understand the text. quizzes were simple. no projects or papers
Ullman is a very good Prof, and is willing to help whenever neccessary. Don't rely on the TA, he doesn't know what he is talking about. The textbook can be very confusing, but he covers all the material extensively in class. Quizzes are easy, but assignments can be hard. The workload is not heavy, overall it is a good class to take.
No, no, no, no. Well, no if you don't like math. Interesting class, no attendance (minus quizzes, tests, and homework), don't have to purchase a book because it's all online... but pretty dense assignments, tests and quizzes are tough, and the TA is useless. Great if you like math. Don't take as a blow-off class. Plus, it's an 8 am. Bad.
If you're willing to work, this is a very fun class that you can get a good grade in. Prof. Ullman is also very willing to answer questions via email and office hours. Personally, I looked forward to this class, even at 8AM. However, many people in this class fair poorly if they don't attend/keep up, so this is not an easy A by any means.
Hard but fair. I would avoid if math is not something you are interested in...
This class was very boring and the fact that it was at 8am on Monday didn't help. Ullman is a very nice guy but the book (which he wrote himself) is almost incomprehensible. His in-class explanations helped somewhat but still, some terms and concepts are hard to understand. I recommend for those who LIKE math (and it's a lot easier than calculus).
Defintely a nice guy and well, I like math so I can't really tell if it's suitable for others. But i think he is very good at teaching, he knows the essence of the materials and is very clear. And you don't have to read textbook if you go to his lecture
Took this at 8am and I'm ok at calc. But this class was horrible! I stopped attending because his explanations were SO CONFUSING! Tests were on completely different material than covered in class and in the text. Curved grades up 30 points and I still barely passed. DO NOT TAKE HIM!
Tough professor. He covers the most basic definitions and concepts in class, leaving the rest for you to fill in.Also assigns the hardest problems from the book for homework, but he is always willing to help you in office hours. The problem is that he isn't always sure of the solution. His tests are extremely hard, but he does give a generous curve
thought i was doing really well in the class in the beginning, but have gradually gone down in performance. attendance isnt mandatory but idk how youll pass if you dont go. exams and quizzes are challenging but theres a pretty nice curve. not an impossible class but definitely requires attention and outside work for success.
Ullman is a boss. Although the content itself was difficult to grasp at times, he found ways to make it palatable. Easy B, although he gives a very generous curve that leaves everyone above 80 with an A.
His lectures are pretty clear and if you dont understand it, use the textbook online. See the TA if you are having difficulty with the concepts. If you aren't a math person, this is a good class. If you understand his lectures and the concepts, you can get an A.
Ullman is a professor everyone should avoid unless your okay with killing your gpa. The class takes the the entire period and then you get quized on harder stuff at the beginning of the next week. I withdrew after the first month, which most of my friends said was a great decission.
Stay away at all costs. I'm pretty good at math but the guys tests and quizzes murder. Spent more time studying for this class than the rest combined and got a C. He's also very condescending and awkward.
He adjusts level of difficulty to the class. Our class was exceptionally strong (weaker students dropped out early), so, consequently, the exams- especially the final- were all very difficult. He's not particularly clear in his explanations. Be wary when taking him.
His final is like a mathematical competition....very difficult. That's why his syllabus said "if you got above 80% of this course, you can get A range." So....you must be as smart as "mathematical person" and as hardworking as bee otherwise you will suffer great pain and receive a bad grade...
The key to succeeding in his class is understanding the type of questions he likes to put on his quizzes/exams. Tends to explain difficult proofs, but those can be summarized in a sentence (and that's all you need to know for his tests). There are 2 midterms and his grading scale is incredible. He is very interested in the topic, and is a nice guy
Very intelligent professor. He is regarded as brilliant among colleagues. I took His Linear Algebra class. His exams were difficult, but I learned more with him than with most.
With Prof. Ullman, Math and Politics is not a joke. He grades on a huge curve and it's necessary. My final grade was 79.5%, which turned out to be an A- with the curve. If you have questions on the homework, GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS. He is willing to help right up to the minute the assignment is due. If you do the homework correctly, tests are easy.
Very hard class, by nature of the material. Took it with Carl as the TA and he helped a ton. Ullman is a good teacher, but is so brilliant that a lot of times I found his explanations going over my head. A TON of work, you will spend most your time on this class.
I was told that Multi was the easiest calc course, and it may be if you do not have Ullman. I DO NOT recommend taking him unless you are forced to. The amount of work he expected from the class was absurd and the tests were impossible. He is terrible with partial credit and you will have a rough time if you do not know everything exactly.
Easily the most ineffective professor I've had at GW. Makes Calc 3, which is usually considered the easiest calculus class, unnecessarily hard. Be prepared to do about 8-10 hours of webassign per week, and have 30% of your grade be based on pop quizzes.
I definitely wouldn't take a class with him again. His grading criteria are ridiculous (30% of your grade is based on pop quizzes) and he makes you spend at least 7-8 hours a week doing webassign which does not help you in understanding the material. Makes the class unnecessarily difficult and is very unclear in lectures. Avoid if possible.
The best math teacher I have ever had. He expects you dedicate a lot of time to the class, but if you do you will certainly get an A. Makes lots of jokes during class that are very funny if you are paying attention. I would definitely take him again.
Professor specifically makes exams hard to "challenge" his students. Has a 30% weight of the final mark on pop quizzes, higher than that of the midterm. Was not really clear and would ramble on in class. Avoid if possible.
Ullman was very clear in his expectations of students from the beginning of the semester. Webassigns took forever, but they were helpful and necessary to understanding the material. Calc 3 is hard no matter who you take it with, and if you're looking to retain and understand the material, take it with Ullman. He wants students to succeed.
Ullman tackles material with genuine enthusiasm that I can only equate in the STEM field to Tom Lehrer. Memorization isn't emphasized as greatly as being able to work out problems. Relaxed grader (above an 80% is A range). Ullman literally wrote the Math and Politics textbook, so he knows the material extremely well.
Professor Ullman is kind of quirky and odd but really nice. He's SUPER passionate about math. This class isn't too hard if you attend and put some effort in. It's mostly logical thinking. It isn't too hard but it's not too easy. If you are really good with logical things, you don't really need to go to class, just read the textbook and you'll do ok
Ullman's a really sweet and funny guy. He starts off class with a relatively random trivia question. He's also really approachable and willing to help. That being said, his tests are brutal. I walked into the final with a solid A in the course, and then that plummeted after the final. Make sure to build a good foundation throughout the course.
WOW this class was so hard I had to withdraw. Lots of people seemed to have taken AP Calc already and grading on scale means that you will probably struggle. Wild range in test scores some people got 1/40 on the midterm(average was 19)However cool guy who gives random trivia at the beginning of class which was fun. Math jumped a lot hard to follow
If you're looking for an easy math class this is not it. You may think that if you go to lectures and study it'll work out. Trust me that won't happen. The prof is a nice guy but speaks in riddles and you won't be able to find any resources to help you b/c he made up the subject. If you take anything away from this comment, don't take this class.
Super hard class. Professor Ullman is really sweet but I struggled so hard in this class. It's also kind of a made up subject so there's not a lot of outside help that you can go to. Take any other math if you can because I was STRUGGLING
Ullman is a math whiz. Very kind and very willing to help and get his students to succeed. Lectures are so incredibly boring. Class is nowhere near as difficult as everyone is saying, just pay attention/read the textbook (which he wrote) and it's an easy A. Easy quizzes, 2 midterms, a final, and some homeworks. Very lenient grader too, above 80%A.
If you're planning on taking this class to satisfy a math requirement, take something else. You either get the material or you don't. For me, it was super hard. Ullman's really smart so the subject makes sense to him, but he doesn't do a very good job of explaining it in simple terms. Grades in the class can range anywhere from a 98 to a 15.
He needs to rework the class and his teaching method. His lectures are really long and meandering and mostly unhelpful. 80% and above in the class is an A. Don't get excited- you're almost guaranteed to miss that 20% on every single assignment. Don't take the class: you'll never use anything you learned in it ever again.
Says attendance is not mandatory but has a quiz EVERY Tuesday that are worth 40% of your grade? --Attendance IS mandatory. My biggest problem with this guy is he takes the simplest concepts and expands them to the point where they just don't make sense anymore. He also doesn't explain or ask questions even remotely similar to how the book does.
Very hard! I struggled to pass this class despite spending 20-25 hours a week studying it. He complicates the simplest of topics. About 40- 50 math HW questions a week! Takes hours and HW is only worth 10 percent of your grade and not helpful for exams. Assessments make up the remaining 90 percent. You will suffer if you dont get the material.
While difficult, Professor Ullman is the best Mathematics professor I've ever had so far. The course has a lot of HW, and is assessment heavy. However, if you study, you should be able to do well. An 80% is an A-. I think that he is more suited for teaching higher level math courses, but I sincerely hope I will be able to take him again.
Ullman's Calc I class is STUPID hard. I took calc in high school and got an A, but didn't take the AP test. Honestly, if you're trying to learn calc, do NOT take Ullman. Many students in the class who had taken calc before struggled like crazy. Midterm and Final is absolutely ridiculous. Quizzes every week, easy concepts very tough problems.
Literally dont take Ullman. If hes the only calc professor, take it next semester. He goes ridiculously fast, his examples in class are fair but the WebAssigns are super difficult. His quizzes and exams are literally ridiculous, he put Calc II on our final as a time suck. I wouldn't trust anyone who said Ullmans a good professor. He just isn't.
He takes the simplest concepts and makes them complicated. There is too much homework each week but it barely factors into the grade or prepares you for his weekly quizzes or exams. The midterm and final were ridiculously hard and the webassign and lecture hardly prepared you for it.
Hes definitely one of the best professors at GW. There were no surprising questions in exams, just work as he asked during the semester. Hes very very nice and approachable, I dont know why people complain about him. Lots of complaints were just because they didnt pay enough attention to the useful lectures or didnt want to learn math at all
Hes literally amazing. I just cannot. I havent met a better professor than him ever. His handwriting is phenomenal. He can teach anything.
Incredibly fair professor. He truly wants his students to do well!
Weekly quizzes and webassign hw problems (50). I took Calc in high school, he finds the most complicated way to teach the simplest topics in general. There is a very generous curve but that's because he always adds at least one too complicated problem on the quiz/exam. Basically its dependent on the TA to actually teach. Very test heavy (2).
He is nice and cares about his students. The concepts are hard and he makes them even harder - TA helps a lot. Quizzes are the biggest part of your grade so do well on those.
he's too hard.
He's a nice person but makes concepts that are simple, very difficult. Expect overcomplicated weekly quizzes and exams. Calculus is not the easiest math class but Ullman makes it 10 times harder
Kind, but finds a way to overcomplicate absolutely everything. He would make a good higher level math professor, but if you are taking Calc I just avoid him.
Prof. Ullman is nice, but he always prefaces his lectures with unrelated trivia and rambling. He also lectures in a way that makes calc 1 seem like quantum mechanics - utterly incomprehensible. Would be a good prof. for higher level maths, but I'd probably avoid him if i were taking calc 1.
Ullman is likely the smartest Professor I've ever had. I echo the comments that say he overcomplicates some concepts, but I found the class reasonable. WebAssign homeworks can be long, quizzes usually contain a curveball or two, and both midterm and final are tricky. That said, I think of him mostly positively, but probably go elsewhere for Calc1.
Grade is based on 12 quizzes (lowest 1 dropped), homework (2-4 WebAssign assignments per week), a midterm, and final. There is a curve based on how other students do on exams. Prof. Ullman is clearly passionate about his job, but he overcomplicates everything and made learning very confusing. Wouldn't recommend for calc 1!
Genuinely the worst prof I've ever had. Confusing lectures where he rambles, and he wrote the textbook so it's just him rambling but written down. You either get it or you don't, and if you don't, you're screwed and he's not going to help you. Whatever class you take, avoid this professor. I can't emphasize it enough.
Do not take this class (or Ullman's section) if you are a freshman looking to fill your quantitative reasoning requirement. His lectures are full of endless, confusing tangents. He is also inconsistent with grading quizzes, not awarding any points despite a right answer. You only need 80% for an A, 60 for a B, but don't let that fool you. Terrible.
Professor Ullman is a highly knowledgeable mathematician. Math and Politics is a course he conceptualized and created with another professor to appeal to the young political minds of GW. Voting theory and apportionment are the bulk of the course. It is highly theoretical. The coursework is quite challenging, but the grading is quite generous.
Professor Ullman is a great guy and cares a lot about his students. It is a very interesting class, but it was very hard. If you are just trying to complete a math credit I would say avoid this class. He never hesitated to answer any and all questions and was not a tough grader.
Professor Ullman teaches in a very intellectual way, and he neglects the fact that hes talking to college students that typically cant follow what hes talking about. His lectures are mostly gibberish, the plus side is if you read the textbook and understand the homeworks youll be fine. The grades are weighted to help people with lower grades.
Professor Ullman is a wonderful and brilliant teacher. Math and Politics is a very challenging class and heavily based in theory but he is more than willing to help students through difficult concepts they don't understand. I went to many of his office hours and he was always so kind and helpful.
Professor Ullman has clear expectations of his students and a set curve. There is frequent homework, which is normal for calc classes, and weekly quizzes. While attendance isn't mandatory, you will quickly fall behind if you don't go and will could quizzes. I enjoyed his lectures and found them easy to follow.
great professor, good curve, study hard and you will at least get a B
