It's a tough class, and I think Dr. White makes it a slight bit harder than it needs to be. He's an open guy, so go to Action Centers and his office hours to make sure you understand the material.
I very much enjoyed Dr. Whites class. He is mainly concerned with your conceptual understanding of physics rather than memorizing equations. The exams are graded extremely generously because he believes in the process and not in correct numbers. I feel like I definitely have a deeper understanding of physics because of him.
Exams are extremely difficult for a 2000 level class. His first year teaching has not been a good one. He likes to complicate material and give exams with questions he knows will stump you. Only weekly HW and Disc. to buffer exam grades. Poorly organized does not have slides or powerpoints or clear lesson plans.
This professor is a joke. He makes lecture material seem easy and then when you get to the exam, it's a whole different world. He is not helpful at all. He tends to lack communication skills. Offers barely any extra credit considering he overcomplicates the material. You better take Strauss or someone elseif you are looking for at least a B.
Dr. White is really nice!. He is awkward but he teaches his subject very well. Every time I go to his class I know I will learn the material. He uploads all his notes/explanations. He gives you everything that you need. I'm not sure why there's bad reviews because he really is nice. lot's of partial credit and extremely generous on exams withpoints
Dr. White is a great professor! As a physics teacher he really tests your conceptual understanding of the topics being taught. He is really accessible outside of the classroom and his lectures are really interesting. I will definitely take him again!
Dr. White made Physics way harder than it needed to be. His lectures DO NOT reflect what his tests consist of. He takes his extremely low class average quite lightly and does nothing to try to improve it, which the majority of his 400-student class finds irritating. I would recommend taking this class with anyone but Daniel White.
White's okay, but his course is unnecessarily difficult & scattered. He posted lecture notes online, but class examples were a breeze in comparison to exams, which left me feeling lost & tricked. No clear direction in material, insufficient/too complex answers to ?s, no extra credit. Take Strauss, he's difficult (it's physics lol) but a great prof
This class was very difficult. I think Dr. White forgets that he is teaching people who have no experince with physics. All of the work done in class, hw, discussion, etc does not help you on tests at all! The tests are the only major grades in the class, and they have less than 10 questions on them, so each question is worth a ton of points.
He teaches material better than almost any professor at OU. But he didn't curve exam scores despite low averages. Didn't drop low homework or discussion scores. He gives a lot of partial credit on exams but they were 6-7 questions long, causing low scores. I learned more in this class than any other unfortunately my grade didn't reflect it.
Posted lecture notes are really good because they give explanantions. Do not skip class very often because him explaining concepts in person is still way better. I never went to AC but I heard he's really helpful. You have to do Expert TA homework and understand it to do well on exams. Don't rely on Chegg like a lot of students bc you'll regret it.
Dr. White knows what he is teaching. However, his in class examples are so much more easier than the actual exam. He is horrible at getting grades back to you. He is sassy and is passive aggressive when he answers your question. He excepts a complete understanding of physics, but he doesn't teach it. he's not a good professor, don't take him
Daniel White is a nice guy (though at times condescending). He does post the notes online and holds office hours, but his examples in class are easier than the exams, which only have 7 questions. He offers no extra credit and does expect a high level of understanding out of his students, and he curves exams LIGHTLY. Not fun if you hate physics
This class is probably the worst science class I have taken at OU. The exams in this class are extremely difficult to the point where doing every book problem, lecture problem, and homework problem don't help since he asks graduate level questions that even the TA's say is graduate level. His class has no clear structure and is all over the place.
Dr. White teaches the material and presents the material in class so easy! However, coming to the exams, it was a very hard for a typical physics exam. He provided conceptual questions and two fill in the blank questions that resulted in a higher level of understanding that no student can think of. He also provided LITTLE-1pt. extra credit!!
The tests have few questions, but tests are large percentage of the overall class grade. The math is covered in class, but the concepts are heavily tested over (which is barely touched on). You can study and put in all the effort that you want, but if you have little intuition in physics and math you won't get an A.
If you want a chance at getting an A in life sciences physics at OU, take it with Dr. White. While the class was a little disorganized this semester, I'm sure its because its his first semester here. The exams are not too hard, just make sure to do the recommended book problems and attend lecture. Def would recommend Dr. White!
Daniel White is a great guy, always willing to talk. Aside from that, you can tell this was his first semester teaching at a large University. He teaches the class as if all of us have foundational knowledge and experience in physics, when we have none. He presents the material as semi-easy, yet tests us as if we are engineering graduate students.
Daniel White had a challenge trying to teach his first class at OU. The tests were extremely hard but if you follow his mission in the class of "critical thinking" and use it during the test you'll do good on like 2/3 of the tests. He drops one test so that kind of helps. And he really tries to help during office hours and is a very nice guy.
Dr. White is a super attentive and approachable professor! He makes a difficult subject like physics feasible through detailed notes and lectures designed to understand the concepts instead of just cramming equations! His exams are workable in the time given, and he awards partial points. SUPER RECCOMEND!!!
Physics is hard subject but Dr. White makes it way easier to understand! While some professors make you read the textbook and learn it on your own, he writes out his notes with very clear explanations to everything! He's also very understanding with test grades and gives a lot of partial credit if you just try!
He gives you so much practice to prepare for exams. If you actually do the homework without aids like chegg and work through all the textbook practice problems he assigns then you will have seen everything that will be on the exam. He curves every exam and replaces your lowest exam with the final. I suck at physics but would def take him again !!
This class was made way harder than it should be. Daniel White expects way too much out of his first year physics students. The homework is awful, the tests are way harder than what he goes over in lecture, and the class is heavily weighted on the tests. If you want to make a good grade in this class, I dont recommend taking it with Daniel.
Dr White is a reasonable teacher and doesnt ask too much of his students. you should be good as long as you do the homework without too much aid and the weekly problems. the exam problems are most similar to book problems. he also rewards partial points which really helps on the exam.
Friends, listen up! This professor seems relatable and funny at firsBut, his exams are difficult. Although they are hard you can get by making sure you review the group work problems, lecture notes, and textbook problems. However, he is notorious for not putting main concepts on the exam. Especially on the final exam, beware pals!
Dr. Daniel White is the worst professor Ive had. His exams are ridiculously difficult compared to the examples he covers in class. No extra credit offered. Takes forever to get grades back. Treats Life Sci majors like engineering students. The dude is condescending. This is not the class to take if you have little/no physics and math intuition
This class is not the best, and there is almost no curve. There are homework and discussion grades (do ALL of these or you will do poorly) but the main points are the 3 exams and final. Work book problems and review group work for exams. The exams are more difficult than lecture, so work as many problems as possible. Not great, but doable.
I have so many regrets. As a senior who has done VERY well in all science courses prior, this was easily the most (ridiculously) difficult course Ive taken. My GPA will now suffer bc of it. It was unnecessary how hard it was, & there were few things to prepare us for how horrible the exams would be. No extra credit, barely any curve (89A). BEWARE
Im very confused by all the horrible reviews. Dr. White was a great professor! He really put a lot of effort into actually teaching us difficult concepts. Physics is just hard. Dr. White really just wanted us to put in the work. Dude even hand wrote his lectures out for us to read after. Not an easy A but youll learn. Would take again.
Dr. White is a pretty good professor. Hes nice to upload detailed notes on his lectures. He wants students to actually understand physics not just the process of doing problems over and over. The example problems from the text are helpful for primary practice not tests. If you can do the discussions and understand it, you can get an A on exams.
Dr. White has *really* good lecture notes that aren't just slides with bullet points but actually have explanations. The notes have easy examples but he offers practice through book problems and groupwork that reflect concepts on the exams, so do them! He doesn't have to give a curve or extra credit so do the work so you don't need to rely on that.
Physics is obviously hard but you need to keep up with everything (hw, groupwork, suggested practice) if you expect to get a good grade. The test questions are worth a lot but he gives tons of partial credit if you write anything you've learned related to the concept questioned. I always came out with a higher score than I expected or deserved tbh
No extra credit, but will slightly curve the class and tests(89A, 78B) with your final replacing lowest. VERY generous with partial credit on the hard af exams. Understand the group work, homework, and do ALL of his recommended study problems. Work for that grade or RIP your GPA. Hardest B I've ever worked for, it's the grind time prime time!!
I made a mistake taking this class. Dont make the same one that I did, unless you dont care about grades. He is a liar who promised higher curves than we got
I loved Dr. White's class. I don't know why people are being so mean on reviewing him. IF you put in the work (doing his study recommendations, homework, attending class, and BUYING the book--many people did not), you will succeed in this class. Always holds extra office hours, ample time on exams, never misses a class, and is great about emailing
Overall he is not a bad professor, this was his first year teaching so it's understandable that there were a few bumps in the road. He does upload his detailed lecture notes on Canvas which is pretty much how I passed because I stopped showing up to class. His exams are a little hard but if you put in the time to study the material, you'll be good.
The homework takes a long time because what he teaches is very different from what is on there. They are HARD, so make sure to give yourself time for that every week. White is a nice but kinda awkward guy that just wants you to succeed. His notes are good, but yes his tests are HARD. He posts his notes online. Good luck!
He is really awkward in person. Exams are tricky and make up most of the grade. Lectures are really easy to understand and then the exam is like a slap to the face. If you do not have to, then do not take him.
Everyone is hard on Dr. White but honestly if you just do his assignments WITHOUT chegg, understand the group work, and go through his problems he posts in the book every week you'll be fine. Work on the misconceptual Q's in the book too, lots of the multiple choice Q's came from there. You dont need to go to class, just read his notes and work.
Tests heavily graded with only 5-7 questions. Hw 15-25. He grades easy/gives partial credit on written testquestions (2-3 written per test). If you want to pass his class, just get Ds on tests and do chegg for As on homework. Skip lecture, he posts them. If you want an A then do everything he asks (book questions, hw without chegg, go to lecture).
Dr. White is a great lecturer and gives great examples for the kinds of things he wants you to learn! However, on his tests, he makes the questions pretty much with the same concepts but a lot harder. I would say that he is a great professor, but the criteria for what he grades is not quite clear and the conceptual questions on his tests kill you.
Dr. White obviously knows what he is talking about and you can really tell he enjoys it. However, his teaching needs significant improvement. His lectures cover topics very vaguely and neither the homework or the suggested problems in the book are helpful AT ALL for the exams. They are only 6-7 questions (3 MC, the rest show work) & HARD.
this guy is an absolutely horrible teacher
Physics is hard, but Dr. White teaches it very well and is quirky and funny. Lectures aren't mandatory, but if you want to do well in the class you BETTER go. Lots of homework but it's really easy to get an A on it. Do the honors section if you can because it's actually easier as Dr. White is your discussion leader. And study hard for exams!!
The way he teaches benefited me a lot and I liked that He'd give 3 hours to complete a 50 minute test.
We all know Physics is hard, but Dr. White somehow made it worse. Yeah, he curves tests, but that's just because the averages were low because he is simply not a good professor. Gets kind of angry when you ask questions also, making the student feel awkward. If you do have to take him, watch Youtube physics videos to help clear up hard concepts.
First of all, Dr. White is amazing. Many of these reviews are just rants and are probably written by students who cheated on the homework or didn't invest enough time and effort in the resources offered. Yes, it is a harder class, but Dr. White genuinely works hard to make sure his students understand and deserves better (and honest) reviews
A lot of people complain about Dr. White, but he's honestly not that bad. He's adjusted his class recently to cover less material so he can be more thorough with what we do cover, and that's helped a lot. Personality-wise we clashed a little (picture a ginger John Green with an attitude), but I did the homework and discussions and the class was OK.
Honestly, one of the worst professors that I have ever had. he gets frustrated when people don't understand things. If you don't have a background in physics prior to this course, good luck teaching yourself everything... lecture material isn't really seen on test. Get a 100% homework on all the HW, go to every single discussion - those are vital.
He is a good person, but he makes his test really hard. He throws in question where you need to know the concept really well to answer the question on the test. It is half multiple choice and half free response. The multiple choice isn't too hard, but the free response questions are really hard but can get partial credit.
I took Dr. Whites class for Physics 1 and 2. Although I had a hard time understanding his teaching in physics 1, I grew to respect him in physics 2. His tests are extremely hard, but he is available in office hours to help. Hes a smart man and sometimes doesnt understand that we arent that smart in physics, but he cares about us for sure.
Dr. White is very knowledgeable in his field; however, he is not very receptive to students that are confused or missed info during lecture. I feel like my TA was much better at explaining things.
Had Dr. White for physics one & two. 2424 is much easier, as it is more concept and less math heavy. Dr. W is a goofy, awkward dude who cares about students but sometimes comes off as condescending. I cannot stress enough how much hard work matters in this class & consulting outside sources such as the textbook.
This is an annoyingly difficult professor who likes to make the tough subject of physics even harder. He is also condescending to students and needs to learn how to properly talk to students. Wish there was another Physics professor to teach this class
Hes good at cracking jokes. This is my second semester with having him as a professor. His homework is not too bad especially if you go to action center and his office hours. His grading criteria is not the best. Otherwise, he is a solid guy. Its hard to apply the physics concepts with his very basic notes. You need to do problems.
good professor/his lectures are interesting enough. I had him for physics 1 at 8:30 am and found his class very hard to go to (hard to understand the concepts without attending lecture). You have to make sure you really know how to integrate the material for the tests but he is a fairer grader than most. Usually curves the class so an 88+ A.
Terrible lectures and even worse office hours. Very awkward and condescending at same time. Makes me not want to even go to the office hours.
He just does not have any idea how to teach and clearly does not care either
So this guy is special. At first, i really liked him. But then he would send long winded 3am emails about his back story and character development and how qualified he is. I think his lectures are interesting and funny. However, what he teaches does not match the homework and the homework does not help for the exam. don't take him, take anyone else
He's a fun guy-- gave random motivational speeches during class... but he just crams in so much material every week that it doesn't allow time to really understand it all. Luckily, he curves the tests big time since most people struggle. Homework/group work is easy and the final is worth only 15%. It's manageable but not fun.
If I could give him a 2.5 I would just cause the lecture notes he uploads online are really good. I felt like the homework was useless and you should focus more on the lectures for the exam. Certain exam questions are really hard. Usually one of the multiple-choice and one of the free response really trip you up. He usually flips an aspect of it.
Saying this class is ridiculous is an understatement. What he teaches in class is not half of what he is putting on an exam. He puts concepts you learned individually together on the exam and lets you figure it out. Most emails he sends sound like threats. Dr. White praises himself by saying "Everything I do is meant to support you all" Lies.
His lectures are really important for understanding the class material. He uses a lot of examples and explains concepts well, so if you understand the lectures and the discussion questions, you will do well on his exams.
I can tell Dr. White really cares about the class, so I have to respect for him for that. However, he seemed to lose it a bit this semester, and the tests seemed a lot harder than before. Recommend doing the textbook practice problems for the exams because the homework problems are rarely on the exam.
Physics is a very difficult subject to teach, and Dr. White gets a lot of hate for it. I believe that he does a fine job teaching physics. If you do the homework, go to lectures, and pay attention, you'll be better off than most. He helps with curving tests; you'll probably do better in the class than you thought.
While lecture attendance isnt mandatory I do say go to class he helps explains it a lot better than the textbook in my opinion. Also, going to office hours helps a lot. He might seem kinda reserved but he actually cares about your learning. You do have to try in this class. So the textbook is helpful when it comes to doing extra practice problems.
Dr. White is a great professor! The homework and discussion questions/worksheets are super helpful. Dr. White's lectures are really engaging and always works through lots of examples in class. He sends lots of emails throughout the semster and is great at communicating between him and his students.
White's lectures are easy to understand. The material never seems to be too difficult. He makes students feel like they have a good grasp on the material, and then when the test comes around they ruin you. The test questions are flipped in ways that students have never seen. Normally you just guess and pray you did something right. DONT TAKE HIM!
He really is a great professor. Incredibly smart and knowledgable and has GREAT lectures. He was the only class I didn't have trouble falling asleep in BUT his exams are lethal. The exams are twisted in a way you've never seen before. You HAVE to know the concepts WELL to be able to get a good grade, not just how to do a certain kind of problem.
Dr. White's lectures are pretty good. He can show some cool things as examples are clearer than theory sometimes. We had online homework that was doable. The exams did make you work for a decent grade. It was hard because we were learning physics at 830 in the morning. There were a lot of pre-med students in this class.
He explains the topics extremely clearly and well. Yes this subject is hard, but at least he is good at teaching it. F for respects.
Dr. White is a great professor! He explains concepts well; physics is just hard to understand! If you take advantage of office hours and tutoring as needed, it well make a huge difference in your understanding because with physics, you cannot rely on the professor and lectures alone. Put in the work yourself or dont complain about Dr. White!!!!
Class taken online during COVID. White obviously knows the subject well. He lectures relatively well given circumstances, but the lectures and HW do not match the exams. Exams are brutal and mainly partial credit for shown work. Hes also condescending and refuses to curve exams or give extra credit, even during a pandemic. Avoid if possible.
Dr. White was my instructor during the COVID- 19 pandemic. We were supposed to have an in person lecture but it was moved online. He adapted swiftly, kept all of us in the loop, and provided amazing lectures all during the time of crisis. Physics is not an easy subject for me but Dr. White does an amazing job covering the material.
Easily my least favorite professor. He is not understanding whatsoever considering the fact that we are in a pandemic and online learning is still very new for us. He even changed the exam format to where we only see one question at a time and arent able to go back and work on it. I have to take him next semester and Im dreading it.
White is a fantastic professor who does everything he can to help. He is one of the professors who has handled to move to online fantastically. He spent weeks over the summer recording lectures that are exactly like what you would get in person. Downside: Very hard exams, he does curve them - but the curve is only done at the end of the semester.
Very very very hard exams. If he makes too hard of a question (even when there is only 3) he won't take it out. He is good at explaining conceptual things but other than that you are on your own. Not the most understanding guy and he will make you hate your life, but you might learn a few concepts. I would try and take another professor if you can.
I cannot emphasize this enough, do not take Dr. White!!! If possible take this class at OCCC because he was the only professor available for me. The final average was a 58% but he said that he did not think that it was unfair lol. He did not give extra credit or curve any of the exams and only curved the final grades by 3.5%, what a joke.
Dr. White would be an amazing professor if it wasnt for his near-impossible exams. Hes worked hard to make video lecture for the online format, & hes good at explaining concepts, but his exams are so difficult that theres little you can do within the class to prepare for them. Only 3 questions per exam & 8 on the final this semester. 86% A
Dr. White does not care whether or not his students succeeds. He spent a majority of this semester sending snappy emails about cheating, and punished the whole class because a few decided to use Chegg on an exam. He also does not seem to not care that the average for his class is an F. Beware of cheating, he will report you. Take it over the summer
Did a decent job explaining the material. Quizzes and final were difficult. To pass try and keep up with the homework and group work without using Chegg. Professor did his best to offer help if you were struggling with concepts. Only curves class at end of the semester to a mid-B. Lets just say the average on the final was a 58%...
He is very helpful in office hours, discussion, and lecture videos were interesting. Beware that tests are very difficult sometimes. However, he curved the class so much at the end (84 + was an A, 69+ was a B). He's a nice guy, just beware of tricky exams. You have to know the concepts to do well and study the homework and group work.
If you study you should be fine, the tests are very hard though so make sure you have the material down 100%. I would not recommend trying to cheat in his class because he won't think twice about turning you in. Also if you cheat he punishes the whole class and so everyone will hate you. Make a groupme for help with group work (its participation)
Dr. White is the most caring prof I've ever had. He checks in on his student's mental health weekly and is very encouraging. He knows that physics is hard and does everything he can to simplify it. He is a fair grader who wants to help you. Overall, a truly amazing man. He's the only prof that has ever asked how I'm doing and told me it would be ok
While this class is very difficult, Dr. White is genuinely the nicest professor I've ever had. He went above and beyond helping his students with homework and preparing for exams, and always checked in on student's mental health. Yes, this class is very hard, but I learned a lot, which was helpful for the MCAT, and he is a very nice professor.
It was frustrating to go through the class and get more compassion and understanding from my TAsmeanwhile it was impossible to even get in contact with Dr. White. I went for a few homework helps and never even got to ask him a question. Tests are crazy hard, and you only get a feel from lectures and group work.
Professor White's class was very difficult to say the least. In his lectures, he does easier problems to help us grasp the different concepts, but when it came to tests, it was 3 or 4 of the most difficult questions he could come up with. He does curve his grades which helped but overall it was a very hard class. However, he is a very nice guy.
I took Dr. White for Phys 1&2. This guy is great. He works hard to make sure lectures are entertaining and informative. He is the most interesting professor I have had. The content is interesting for curious, math orieniented minds. Lectures are important to understand. HW can take some creative thinking if you have a problem TAs are helpful
Dr. White is very knowledgable in physics and how to teach it. You have to put in a lot of work and do every assignment because there is no chance you can do great on every test. The tests were a lot different and more difficult than lectures or homework. One of the hardest classes I have ever taken, but Dr. White does his best.
Dr. White cares about his students and wants them to succeed. However, physics is a difficult subject regardless of who you take, so beware you will have to work in this class. The tests can be difficult so do well on everything as early as possible so if you do encounter an impossible test question you can recover.
The tests are so incredibly difficult. I understand that applying several methods is a part of physics, but the exams do not even test your knowledge over concepts that you have studied for hours. Every exam required the application of at least three different concepts, and the practice exams are not applicable so do not study those.
This is a horrible professor!!! He will explain one concept with a billion unnecessary examples just making the concept more confusing than what already is. I learned more physics from "The Organic Chemistry Tutor" on YouTube. Don't take him! AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID!!!
White is a very nice guy, and went out of his way to provide with extra meeting times for help on homework. The problem is you were supposed to get help from equally confused classmates. Additionally, his exams were 3 questions, and the most difficult I've ever had. There was just no way to prepare for them. The textbook problems were not adequate.
I loved the course structure. There is hw every week and participation grade in discussion class so making a C on an exam was pretty good. He gives lots of partial points on exams. He is fairly quick to respond to emails. The class is tough, it requires study time outside of class but he teaches it well.
Heres what it is straight, cut, and unbiased. This class is extremely tough. However, IF you take advantage of EVERY opportunity (tutoring, office hours, action center) youll be able to do well. I highly advise that you do not skip lecture, even missing one lecture can and will set you behind for a little bit. Put in the work, reap the benefits.
Dr White gets some unfair criticism just because he is very direct and teaches a hard subject. However this mostly comes from people who never show up to office hours and Chegg the Hw. If you work to help yourself, he will work to help you. He is easily one of my favorite teachers I have had during my time at OU. Take him if you have the chance.
Dr. White knows a lot about physics. That being said, it does not mean that he is great at teaching physics. Most of your grade comes from the exams, each of which are very difficult. The final problem on every test is something he has not taught you, but expects you to be able to figure out using what you know from his semi-informative lectures.
Dr. White is by far the best professor I've ever had. He genuinely cares and wants us to succeed. He has so many office hours, and they are truly the most helpful. He is very responsive to emails and is willing to work with his students. His lectures are engaging and funny. Ignore the bad reviews. This prof is great, take him if you get the chance!
Professor White is a great professor however physics itself can be very difficult. To be successful you have to go to every lecture and put in a lot of hours outside of class. He curves exams and the overall grade isn't only based on exam grades so it's not too difficult to make an A.
It's physics... His lectures are very broad and his tests are nothing like the lectures. He speaks a lot about the history behind the stuff we learn which is just a waste of time. Don't get behind or you will not do well.
The teaching style that Dr. White used was extremely confusing. He basically teaches through example problems of the material very broadly. He expects you to know the material before coming to class every time. The exams are also extremely difficult and are worth a total of 60% of your grade. I do not recommend taking him at all.
Not a good teacher, he introduces a new topic and expects you to know it immediately. Answers questions with questions and doesn't explain anything leaving more confusion. He gives partial credit on exams but they aren't like the notes or even the practice exams, so good luck. He's probably good at physics but he is terrible at teaching it.
Physics is a hard subject as is, but when you take it with Daniel White, it is 10 times harder to grasp. You can tell that he is smart and knows a lot about physics. Unfortunately he does not know how to teach it. His exams are nearly impossible where he creates really long and confusing questions but wonders why the class average is failing.
Took in Fall 2020, was going to get a D. Decided to Withdraw and enrolled at OSU-OKC and I am probably going to get a high A in this course this semester (SP '22). It will transfer over to OU as the same course. Taking PHYS II in the summer! Best decision ever!
This class does have difficult content and material, physics isn't an easy subject by any means. This professors teaching style does not do the subject any justice, and only makes the content more confusing. He spends a good portion of the lecture making you do practice problems, but there's no TA's so good luck, it's not much help.
Dr. White clearly knows a lot about physics but he doesn't know how to teach it to people who don't already know it. Homeworks and group works are easy 100s but exams will tank your grade since he makes them overly hard and he's never very clear about what to study. He would do better teaching for physics majors who want to be learning physics.
He was great towards the beginning of the semester but really slacked off and became kind of apathetic and unhelpful towards the end. Not terrible, but not great either.
Great lecture notes. Groupwork/HW are OK, but exams combine topics. Holds extra office hours before exams. During them, he always says that his best advice is to eat/rest instead of study. Talks bluntly or vaguely, nicely or cheekily, mirroring you. Sends detailed announcements. Loves physics; seems to hate life/teaching. Disciplined but stubborn.
Dr. White is actually a great professor. Lots of students complain bc they're obsessed with getting A's and because physics 2 is difficult. He gives you plenty of outside resources and holds extra office hours which most students do not take advantage of, hence the complaints. He is willing to work with you if you let him know you are struggling.
Dr. White is smart but not a good teacher. i would recommend Dr. Strauss for physics if he is available
While Daniel White is not a terrible professor, he runs a terrible class. His lectures aren't bad and he attempts to make the material easy to understand, however, he then gives extremely difficult tests that look nothing like the problems done in class or in group works. If you want a good GPA, do not take Dr. White-he'll ruin it.
You get what you give with Dr. White. He cares deeply about the education of his students rather than their grades. I ended up with the same grade both semesters, and I would take him again. Balancing this course with other classes is challenging, but if you show up to lecture and work with Dr. White and your TA during discussion, you will succeed.
Physics is not easy. Dr. White made it feel like a piece of cake. The people giving him poor ratings didn't take advantage of the tremendous amount of outside help that he offered. I felt well prepared for every exam without even studying that hard. Just go to lecture and pay attention, take good notes, and go to his office hours for help.
Dr. White loves to tell students how he is "one of the foremost experts in the world regarding teaching and learning physics," but his course does not reflect that. He is so obsessed with perfecting his physics teaching style that his students' learning suffers. Combined with the manic 4am emails, I would avoid this professor at all costs.
Dr. White is my favorite professor at OU. He's kind, understanding, and just generally wants you to do well in his class. His whole philosophy is that making mistakes is a part of learning, and gives you opportunities to safely make mistakes. He sends emails asking how youre doing if you seem down and gives you extensions if you ask. He's great
Dr. White clearly cares about his students and hopes to have a positive impact on their impression of physics. As someone who was already experienced in the field, 1205 was mostly a review class. Don't let this lead you down the wrong path, Dr. White's tests are not trivial and account for most of your grade.
Had for PHYS 1205 &1215: an amazing professor. His classes really taught me how to be a successful physics student in the department. Definitely prepared me for my future physics class. Has wonderful office hours, and explains things thoroughly. HE POSTS EXCELLENT LECTURE NOTES ON CANVAS. Really does care about students' mental health. TAKE HIM
Prof White was always caring about how his students were doing, and would regularly do homework help sessions and post answers for parts of homework to help you keep on track throughout the difficult material. Labs felt often felt tangential. Exams were curved and the grade brackets altered in people's favor, which saved me and others.
This man doesn't know how to teach. He spends half of class walking around and by the time class is over he's gone over 3 examples and started another (not finishing), which he suggests you look at in his notes. He also short hands a lot of the equations that he uses to "save time." Skip class study past exams and the discussion worksheets.
Physics is not an easy concept and that is clearly reflected in Dr. Whites grading criteria. He curves all of the tests and gives partial points for diagrams, equations and explanations. He also offers a lot of outside help for people who are struggling. Show up, do the work, study for the tests and you can get an A.
Dr. White makes physics bearable. For tests, he gives partial credit and curves to a 70. At the end, he rounds the average class grade to an 85! Tests are hard. Do as many practice problems as possible. There is a clear grade difference between the people who go to class and those who don't. If you do bad in this class, it's your own fault.
Dr. White gives engaging and clear lectures. The homework is a bit harder than the lecture examples, however, there are several resources to help. The grading is clear. Exams and grades are curved, so that helps. The physics discussion is not very useful.
Although this class is not easy, Daniel White has been my favorite professor at OU thus far. You have to work hard in the class, however, it is evident that Dr. White cares about his students success and is very pro-student. He ended up making an 85 or above an A for this semester.
Dr. White is helpful and understanding of people who are not great with physics. I don't know why he has so many bad reviews. I had him this semester after putting off taking physics because I was worried and he made it fun and not that bad. He is funny and reminds of like a dad. He is cool. You just have to put in the work.
Tests make up 60% of your grade, one gets replaced if your final is higher. I highly recommend taking Group Work seriously, often the same ideas/concepts, and even question types will show up on your exam. His exam questions are way harder than his examples in class, so I'd recommend doing hw and group work to get a feel for it. Not a bad prof tho
Dr White is a good physics professor even at 8:30 in the morning. He tries to make his lectures interesting by giving us real life examples of physics concepts. The exams make up a lot of your grade, but the lowest is replaced with the final and LOTS of partial credit is given. The homework is hard, but that and the group works help your grade.
If you were good at the hard math problems on the SAT/ACT, this class will be easy for you. The class was challenging but that's recognized with curves on the tests. Even though lecture is optional, going is beneficial because he will walk you through practice problems which are unique to his exam style. Groupworks are hidden gems for studying!
Dr. White is an amazing professor who understands both how to teach physics concepts and the physics itself. He also is willing to set up homework help sessions for those who need it. Be aware the the exams are worth 60% of the grade in PHYS 1205, between the 2 midterms and the final.
Dr. White made physics bearable but you definitely have to put in work at get an A, but it's doable! Weekly homework is often very confusing and more complex than the tests, but it is pretty helpful. He puts past midterms on Cavnas and those plus the groupwork is super helpful. Tests are curved with partial credit so he does a lot to help grades.
Dr. White is the best you'll get taking physics1, but that's not saying much. He's passive aggressive and rude. Got an exam docked 3 LETTER GRADES because of an honest mistake. I answered what I thought the question was right, but apparently that didn't matter at all. Tried to explain my mistake and he acted like I just stabbed his mom.
I loved Dr. Whites class! I was nervous for this class because physics was new to me but he made it fun and manageable to learn. He also gave you many opportunities to learn through his lectures, notes and office hours. If you go to lecture and attend office hours you will be just fine. Just remember physics is hard so you do have to work for an A.
He tries. Had him last semester for PHYS 2414. His classes is extremely hard and I have noticed how in office hours he tends to belittle his students for not knowing how to do problems. Short-tempered. Exams are 5-7 questions and are way harder than what we have done in class. The only good thing is that theres partial credit and a curve (usually).
Dr. White wasn't exactly a bad teacher per se, but the homework and tests were always ridiculously hard. I ended up getting a 50% on the final and got an 87% in the class, but everyone did so poorly that the grading curve gave me an A anyways. I'm math savvy but the problems on assignments/tests were always way harder than what we did in class...
Dr. White was a great professor to have for physics. It is a hard subject but he made the class very easy to learn. You can tell he puts lots of thought into the in class examples and group work. He posts highly detailed lecture notes and holds homework help sessions. Tests are curved with lots of partial credit and overall grade is curved.
Really nice and funny guy but it felt like the class was made so much more difficult than it needed to be because of the insanely difficult exams and weekly homework that could easily take 3/4+ hours (due Fri., but you can't start until Wed. because it requires detailed understanding of content studied THAT WEEK). Maybe I'm just bad at physics idk.
My ick with him is that he uploads handwritten notes, I prefer just good ol powerpoint slides. He's also very sassy when you try to talk to him about anything. He does curve exams because the average is always like a 30/50, so its not too bad. Interesting fella, but at the end of the day it is Physics so you have to put in work.
HW took about 3-4 hours every week. Tests during the semester ended up being almost every 2 weeks. He speeds through information so you have to study yourself outside the class
He isn't a bad professor, but his class was hard. Homework took several hours each week. He curves his exams and there were exams every couple of weeks, Additionally, there were no exams for over a month before the final exam, so it felt very unprepared and was hard. However, he does know a lot about physics, but you just need to put in the work.
Had for both physics 1 and 2. Physics 2 is just harder overall but it seemed like he was a lot more lenient on the grading for 1. For reference I got a high A in 1 and definitely didn't study as hard. He's not the worst but he's also not that great. Unless you want to spend 4 hours on the homework every week you just have to chegg the whole thing.
Dr. White is knowledgeable, caring, and approachable. However, his exams will contain at least 1 novel question which requires an in-depth knowledge of the concept to fully get right. This is not one of the classes where you can do the old exam and guarantee an A. If you want an A in his class, you will need to become knowledgeable in the material.
Dr. White is the best professor I've had at OU. His class is difficult, but physics isn't supposed to be easy. Although the tests and homeworks are challenging, I feel prepared for the physics I will see on the MCAT.Dr. White truly cares about his students success and is a very personable guy.Go to his office hours! You'll like him better if you do!
Took him for physics 1 & 2, and 2 is definitely a lot harder. The last question on exams is completely new and I often missed almost all of that question which was annoying with only a few points for an exam curve. He has a temper but is silly so it's not the worst. I had to Chegg most of the homework or its impossible and I always went to class.
An extremely caring professor that anyone would be lucky to have. He understands that the concepts are hard and does his best to make them understandable. Puts a ton of effort into helping students with homework help sessions and office hours. Content is tough, but you definitely want to have him teaching it to you.
Dr. White is a fair professor who makes physics manageable. Assignments are challenging but his focus on partial credit and group work helps. Using Unstuck AI for practice made a difference in my understanding.
Sassy :( Would give him a higher rating because I like his teaching style but exams are curveball questions and he has a temper.
Dr. White cares about his students and cares about his job and the purpose of education- which is a breath of fresh air compared to the rest of the science classes where most professors do not care about their students. All professors should be like Dr. White, especially regarding his research experiences on psychological ways that students learn.
This was genuinely one of the toughest classes I ever took. Class examples and old exams will be nothing like the real one, they won't be useful to you. Your best bet is focusing on homework and groupwork and office hours if needed. Also, there will be some days he rants about nothing, and wastes time, especially if exam averages are low. Horrible.
He's alright. Exams and assignments are not like his lectures, the homework and group work are much more useful for study material. I mean, attending lectures is whatever, you could honestly just teach this to yourself using the homework. I like that he curves a lot though.
Daniel White needs to understand that this Physics course is for premed/non Physics majors. You can sit there and listen to him in lecture, go over his notes, and do group work but you will never be fully prepped for that exam. His old material doesn't help with anything as he throws in completely different and new questions in his new exams.
Goes over the basics and makes the exams complicated. If it weren't for curves, we'd all fail. Don't bother going to office hours as he will ignore you, tell you to start the problem and will then proceed to leave without helping you. After the 3rd midterm had a "talk" with the class saying how we "need to figure it out" or we'll not make it.
Dr. White is okay but is passive-aggressive/temper. Examples in class are easy compared to the exams but good starting block to figure out homeworks. If you want to do good redo the homeworks and group work as those are good practice for the exams. Curves a decent amount which is good. Not a walk in the park but definitely doable if you work hard.
60% of your grade will be from exams. The lectures and content do not prepare fully prepare you for exams there will always be at least 2/5 questions that were not taught. He is rude to students, called my whole class dumb. The homework and studying alone will take up 5+ hours a week on top of class and discussion. Take somewhere else.
This was such a tough class. Lectures would seem easy and I felt like I could understand them, but then the homework would take hours to complete and were hard. Yes he was a tough teacher, but he curved every single one of the exams. He aimed to get an average of a mid B for the class and he did. If needed I would take a class with him again.
Taught the basics in class, but has questions on the exam over things we never talked abt. Told us we needed to "figure it out" when the class average on an exam was 40%. He belittles students if they try to ask him questions. Homework can be helpful but takes HOURS. Only way I survived was by going to a tutor. Recommend taking any other prof
Overall, Dr. White is a good guy who genuinely cares about his students. Be aware that he presents easy examples in class to give a foundational understanding and then harder applications of those concepts on tests. Definitely possible to do well if you commit the time though. He also curves every test to a 70 and the final average to about an 85.
He's actually at explaining the materials. The only thing that makes me dislike him is how he encourages participation but oftentimes gives you attitude when you ask questions or when you don't understand what he's talking about. The lab is worse since does not really try to help you and let you figure everything out until the last 5 minutes.
Good with explaining complex concepts. Though, I genuinely hate labs with him. He's already bad tempered, and that gets worse in lab. He would literally get pissed off for every single mistake you make when you are trying to learn even though he preaches so much about "relearning intuition" for physics. His frequent scolding has become intolerable.
the worst class ive taken at OU. even if you try hard and study what he recommends you will fail the tests. do NOT take this class unless you absolutely have to. he does not explain things well and his exams are WAY harder then the examples he goes over in class. This class is harder than any chemistry or biology ive ever taken.
Takes off way too many points, exams have new material, class average is F and he still blames the students, curves but the curve does not help, I study a lot for this class and I might fail but I need to graduate soon. He needs to make his exams more like examples shown in class. I know people that will be reporting to the department soon.
Does not provide proper tools for students to complete homework and tests are terribly written and weighted awfully.
People hate on Professor White, but I had him for both Physics I and II, and he's a great professor. His examples in class are easy to follow, albeit simpler than the stuff on the homework. He's overall a good professor, and he specializes in the educational part of physics, so he knows how to teach!
Take physics at a community college if you're not going into physics. Period
This guy is nice and super passionate about physics. Homework takes hours though and is hardly relevent to the exams. Exams are multiple choice + free response and there's just not enough time in the 50 minutes we're allotted to complete them without BS'ing. Decent curve on exams, but not enough to save your GPA.
take someone else
He teaches a challenging course but does it very well. He's engaging and approachable in lecture and offers plenty of chances to ask questions outside class. The material is tough, but he makes it interesting and understandable. Highly recommend taking him if you can.
