computers, information, and society
An excellent professor. The material can be a little dry at times, but you cannot blame her for that. The course is an interesting one & she only takes it one step forward with her skills. Very fair tests & good marker as well !!
Could not understand her...very boring...could not show up for her lectures...put me to sleep.
Nice and kind professor, great marker. Intelligent, treats students nicely. Part of the material she lectures on is not one the most exiting (computers and related stuff). The first half of the course is much more interesting, and encompasses physics, astronomy and chemistry. Good course as an elective.
Good luck peeps. Shes a nice lady, she tries but man the lectures were soooo hard to understand because you want to fall asleep!! However, i didnt goto class much but still ended up with a good mark.
easy course, tests are straight from the slides, minimal txtbook use. course is straight fwd, she tries to help too. material is kinda boring but easy. final verdict: memorize slides, and a 6credit mark booster this course is...who could say no to a gift like that :D:D:D...PS:science students will DESTROY this course, with our awsome study habits:P
This is from a student who stopped taking math since grade 11! She is soo nice, she is very friendly and very understandable about deadlines! The tests are straight from the slides! Dont need to attend a class to do good on tests! But there is an in class mark which is counted out of 10 :) GOOD LUCK! very nice teacher! will help you asap!
shes very helpful and if you show up class everyday you will get good participation mark shes easy going at giving marks but the material itself is boring
Very interesting course and the prof tries her best to summarize readings in easily digestible form. She encourages discussion and you will learn more from these than if you just did the readings and never attended. She's very helpful and will go to great length to explain things. BE SURE you like the subject matter before taking the class.
This was a tough class. The historical aspect of the course is very interesting and engaging, but the mathematical aspect is beyond boring. She doesn't really address the math in depth for people who have difficulty with it.
She is not helpful at all I emailed her a question about an assignment because I didn't understand what she means because English is my 2nd language and she replied to me that i didn't attend class or I was taking a nap in her class and I didn't do my readings while on the other hand I did attend all of her classes and did the readings. Worst class
She's very passionate about this class, which is nice... but it's still very dry material and boring. Warning - if you have a three hour lecture she goes through the entire 3 hours! :( Anyways, her tests and exams were super easy. I hardly showed up to class, reviewed last minute and still ended up with an A. :)
Prof. Monaldi is great. Some of the readings are a bit difficult. Show up to lectures and she clarifies a lot of it. I wouldn't recommend talking during lecture though...
I love professor Monaldi! She genuinely cares about the students doing well and is very helpful. The material is a bit boring however I would still recommend taking her class. She posts everything online which is also very helpful. Love her!
She is a very nice prof, however I can not understand her at all. She has a somewhat thick accent, and no matter how much I try I find myself drifting away because I do not understand her.
She has a difficult accent to listen to or understand, you have to attend class for her pop-quizzes counted for 25% of the mark. The MOST BORING AND DRY MATERIAL IN ANY COURSE I've ever taken, and shes not very helpful, reads off of slides, and came to our exam 50 minutes late because she was stuck in traffic, avoid if you can!
Shes one of the nicest profs at York. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you want an easy A there is A LOT of reading. Some of her readings are ridiculous and seem so stupid. She makes you read a 150 page book in addition to other readings from the class a week before the final. Expect to read at least 1000 pages before the final.
THE WORST prof I have ever had at york. For being an elective and a first year class it was too much work and total bs. She is super vague and a hard marker. Material is so boring and textbook she wrote herself is hard to read and get through! DO NOT TAKE!
While I do agree with everyone about the material being boring at times (obviously the history of math will be) she is very nice and helpful, so long as you seek help and guidance. IF you do your homework and attend class, like all other courses, you will do well... that simple! She leaves it in the students hands and rewards those who work hard.
Professor Monaldi is an overall nice professor and easy to approach. ALOT of readings though in her class and it is not something you can leave at the last minute. She marks fairly and if you concentrate you can finish an assignment in one day. I wouldn't mind taking another class with her.
She has a bit of an accent which might bother some but I had no issues with it. Interesting subject and reading material is palatable (pun intended). Topics can be interesting. Didn't have much control over class in terms of order. You have to attend classes and read the material (even a once over atleast) and you'll munch your way to an A easy.
She is extremely monotone and disorganized with how she sets up the class and group assignments (literally calls each of the 200+ students' names). HOWEVER, the course is easy if you keep up and do the readings. Group assignments were horrible but to no fault of her own. If you can take initiative with the readings you don't need to go to class.
She's a great lecturer, actually learnt something interesting. 1010 would recommend. If you attend all the lectures you don't actually have to read her textbook!!!
She is the most considerate amazing prof. She actually cares about her students and wants her students to do well.
Loved her lectures to bits, only class I attended all the classes!! She's extremely helpful but make sure you don't miss a quiz and she also gives extra credit assignments during the year for those who want to get a better overall grade!
Boring as crap but an easy A didn't even need to read the textbook but it helps before a test
Very amazing lectures, she cares about her students performance, she is willing to help, she is nice and is not a tough grader. Take group projects seriously, do your readings and attend lectures and you would be good
I got an A, I only went to lectures when there was group projects or tests. Mondali is not a good lecturer, at 8:30am I just couldn't do it. We were behind syllabus from DAY ONE.. and she had to remove some readings too. The material was very easy, maybe I'm lucky b/c I just skimmed through and did well. Others didn't do so well though.
Took the 1560 NATS course In my final year and I must say the worst class I have ever took. If you are looking for a easy NATS course where the professor actually cares do not take this course.
There is some misinformation in this course as well as a lack of information in certain areas of Understanding Food. I still learned a lot though. She is a nice lady but the group projects were horrible.
Means well at heart, cares for students, and in person is great. However, the online portion of the class was disorganized and made it hard for the class to keep up with content. However, always quick and helpful with emails if you ever need anything.
this class is definitely not easy - she was behind on lectures the entire semester and gave long test reviews that had absolutely nothing to do with the tests. although she is a nice prof, she was very disorganised and the short answer portion of tests was marked differently depending on which ta was grading
Prof is nice, but the course sucks.
Dr. Monaldi is the most PATIENT professor I've seen at York University. Students in my class were an extremely tough crowd, but she was still an interesting and engaging professor. If you have absolutely no background in mathematics, I wouldnt take this course. But if you want to gain a stronger understanding of the history of math/world, take it!
Professor Monaldi is very nice and will help you as best as she can. However, her lectures are very long and boring (she spent 3 classes speaking about one topic) therefore, was behind and had to remove readings. In my opinion, if you read the textbook and look at her lecture slides you could only go to class for tests and group assignments.
Great prof!!!! Whatever problems you have she will respond to emails extremely fast. You can also take advantage of her office hours. Projects are pretty straight forward. If you pay attention to the lectures you don't have to depend on the readings as much because her lectures go into depth. The only way your grade could be low is if you don't try
She is very nice, but lectures are disorganized. I went to all the lectures, recorded her voice and took note of everything she said. Lecture slides are not clear, and with the textbook only you wont be able to do well on the tests. There were two multiple choice tests and two short answer quizzes and 4 inclass group works.
Very helpful and listening professor. She replies to emails fast and helps in the best way possible unlike other professors in the social science department sosc10
Dr Monaldi is a great professor because she explains things and is always willing to help you. This is a really easy course that doesn't require much effort. Easy A
Nice prof, quick with replying. Overall, if you attend class and take good notes, you can easily pass without using the textbook. Conversely, if you don't attend, just read the textbook and you should be good to go. There were 2 quizzes (short answer) and 2 tests (MCQ) and 2 assignments. Easy A.
I'm not a science person at all so I was worried for my first NATS course, but Professor Monaldi's Understanding Food course is really interesting! She is really good at emailing you, and her tests/quizzes only take from the slides and textbook so as long as you study major concepts you're fine! She also dealt amazingly with the strike!
Great prof. Very clear lectures and readings, and expects you to do them and participate in class. Always takes the time to answer questions and is overall very patient and willing to teach/educate.
She is a very kind professor that is always accessible and lenient towards students. She explains things very well and you do not even need to read the book.
Her slides contain a lot of information, so much so that you don't have to do the readings necessarily. She's passionate about what she speaks about and sometimes goes on a tangent which is fine. Go to class! Every class is worth 1%, 8 lecture classes and 1 bonus. Meant the difference between my final grade going from a B+ to an A (80.25%).
Accessible outside of lecture, patient, and amazingly responsive to emails. But, she adds too much on her ppt. slides and at times goes on needlessly long tangents. Also, her speech's accent, and pacing is brutal. But then again, if you take great lecture notes, you won't need to use the textbook nearly as much. Overall, very fair course.
She's a great prof. But the course itself is horrible and boring because she's the only prof that teaches this course.
She's an okay prof, however this course is definitely not easy. There are 2 activities, 2 quizzes and 2 tests. The mark you get mainly depends on which TA is marking it. There is a lot of material to learn and memorize and after the first few lectures, the material gets really boring and difficult.
I have never waited longer to get assignments back. Her TAs are so subjective and all mark things differently. My friend and I did the assignment together, one of us got an 80 other got a 40. The course itself is not hard, but Monaldi is a poor excuse for a prof and does not know how to engage students. Take it if you want to nap at school.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. I took this course thinking that it was going to be easy but it was the complete opposite. All of her TA's marked differently and gave no feedback on assignments. Her test reviews are lengthy and useless. It took over a month to receive grades back for assignments and quizzes. AVOID THIS PROF IF YOU CAN!!
Her tests are all memorization, questions covered in class are most definitely on her tests/quizzes. Slides are bit long but she explains everything in them, cool if you miss class. Understanding asf, just explain your situation and she gives out extensions all the time. Her assignments are straightforward. No textbook literally just lectures.
Professor Monaldi was an amazing professor. I had her for STS 2411 and STS 2222, she was very caring towards the students. Sometimes her lectures could be dry and she has a lot of readings but her tests were fair. She was very understanding when it came to deadlines and if asked she would extend. I would definitely take more courses with her!
She was the most understanding prof ever and was very sweet. the course material was interesting, though could challenge you at times but I thoroughly enjoyed her class and I would take it a million times over!
An easy class but you won't learn much. All tests were based purely off her PPTs. She just reads her PPTs so no need to attend class if you review them. Some of her quiz questions are factually incorrect.
I would for sure take her class again like a 10/10 would recommend, she's honestly one of my favourite profs for my first year. All activities are multiple-choice and based on the presentations we read, she gives out 2 tests and 2 assignments but is bearable once you go over course material. I however never used the textbook we were assigned to buy
I took the class in the Fall of 2020 and it was overall really fun and interesting. There are activities and quizzes but those are pretty simple if you go through the professor's powerpoints. The most lengthy and time-consuming part of the course was the written assignments so that's the only boring part about the course. Otherwise, easy A.
The class is not hard, the quizzes are straight from the powerpoints. I never buy textbooks and this class never used them. I'm usually a C student, but this class was really easy in the tests and quizzes. The assignments are a lot of work and make absolutely no sense, especially if you have never taken science past grade 10. Would not recommend.
The professor is very kind and understanding... although the course material is not that easy, if you want a better grade you should really work hard.
The prof prepared all the required material and course outlines before the start of the year, so it was easy to understand/prep for upcoming assignments. All the resources required were given; assignments and tests were very similar to lecture material. It was generally easy to follow class with minimum preparation. Great prof, but can be slow.
Honestly, took this class as it was known to be a bird course but this Professor is absolutely horrendous. Firstly, she posts lectures that she recorded years ago and doesnt do any new lectures for this year. The way the assignments are marked is absolutely awful. Lastly, the way she replies to her emails is completely rude and unempathetic.
Prof Monaldi has too many assignments/quizzes/tests that are barely weighted then exams that are weighted heavily. Her accent makes it sometimes difficult to understand what she is saying, but she always answers questions when students seek clarification.
Daniela's slides and pre-recorded lectures are basically all you need to pass this course. This class has no exam and is basically just assignment/test-based. Her tests are quite unfair though, 30 mins for 30 questions... barely gives you time to even think. However, this course is very manageable.
I recommended taking this course as an elective. If you watch the lectures, you'll be fine. 3 assignments each worth 20%, grading was tough but you're just answering questions based on the lectures/readings. 10 easy weekly quizzes worth 10% altogether. 2 tests each 15% (30 MC) they were tricky. Overall, great course and prof! Don't need tb.
Didn't watch a single lecture or go to a tutorial and ended with an A, Tests are factually incorrect sometimes but whatever. Take this course if you want an easy A but don't expect to get assignments back until weeks after submission with probably the worst grading methods possible.
Took this course for the extra credits. Quite interesting. The T.A's were tough markers though. If you pay attention to the lecture you'll do good. the quizzes are straight up from the slides. The assignments have resources where you find the answers and the midterm and final were okay.
She could barely get a proper sentence out of her. Most of the information for the quizzes were on the slides or in the textbook. The test somewhat relate back to the powerpoints. You can get a decent mark if you read the slides. However, the TA's can be unresonable. Half of them didn't speak fluent English and would reticule any feedback given.
I had her for STS3600 and she was just an amazing professor. I'm graduating and this is the first time rating a professor because she was very nice and understanding. Participation matters and there are lots of readings. Classes were not boring because her lectures involve the participation of the students and the topics were very interesting.
I am writing this review exactly one month after the last day of winter exams, with only 40% of my final mark presented to me, as she's still marking. Course had 1-2 readings per week (available online) & lectures were unengaging recaps of said readings. She tried making breakout rooms for discussion, but nobody ever speaks. Very particular grading
Professor Monaldi was a nice enough professor. Assignments are graded hard! The biggest problem is the length of time to receive grades. Consistent issue, no accountability. Still waiting for final grades - courses ended august 9, exams ended August 18 and still nothing but an email saying they fell behind. (Too bad we cannot use that excuse).
Professor Monaldi is brilliant, organized, and provides all the resources for students to be successful. Everything was there in the course folders! She evaluates student work with integrity. Even with help, it is impossible to mark all assignments in a matter of weeks given our large class size. Fantastic quality human being and prof in one!
She cannot get a full sentence out of her mouth without stuttering. Take another prof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I Did not understand anything,I had difficulty understanding the accent, plus the lecture was 3 hours long.
I advise everyone to stay away from taking a class with this professor as she does not grade assignments on time and does not send any grades to the registrars office at the end of a class. Please for the sake of your GPA, do not take a course with her.
I regretted taking this course. Not only are there too many deadlines, she's also disorganized, hasn't provided the final grades after nearly two months of completing the course, and a very hard marker! She allows you to use any citation on assignments, but feedback on assignments, she'll say "use this citation." This course will drop your GPA!!
If you don't mind a prof with a heavy accent then take her, otherwise, you're better off taking different prof. Her accent was hard to understand even when I sat up close.
I saw many negative comments on here about Professor Monaldi. Her accent is not difficult to understand and she is engaging with iClicker questions. She is super caring and wants the best for her students. The assignments were marked pretty hard, but if you put in effort you can get a good grade (I got a 97% and a 98% but some people did worse).
Despite the negative comments about her here, she is a super caring professor who genuinely wants the best for her students. As a general note, I do not recommend solely looking at these reviews to choose a prof because often people with low grades blame the prof for their own faults. I worked hard and actually did all the work and achieved 100%.
There is lots of reading, but you can do well if you read all of the material. Also, she added a 7.5% boost to the tests and even let people exceed 100% (e.g. 105% with the boost) while most profs cap the marks with a boost at 100%. The assignments are graded pretty hard so make sure to include all possible details in your responses.
Grading took forever. For instance, I got a grade in late December on an assignment that was due in mid October.
Caring & wants us to succeed BUT takes FOREVER to grade stuff. I had an assignment graded back 2 months later and still waiting on another grade while the next semester starts tomorrow.... High maintenance class (weekly quizzes that were tough & participation), easy tests (Q's from review/quizzes). Lectures are hard to follow and tough grader.
Heavy accent. Weird terminalogy she doesnt want to teach she just want to catch you with word games. Tough grader outside of the rubric don t take it
Not a great professor-take this course with a different prof and you will be more interested and likely get a better grade.
Tests and Quiz are Difficult. If she is not your main subject teacher, I suggest do not choose her
Boring Lectures. Very easy quizzes but too difficult tests.
Daniela is passionate about what she teaches and she explains concepts well. Her iClicker participation exercises were fair and engaging. However, she can be hard to understand. And definitely don't expect the class to be easy. There is a lot of chemistry and biology involved. There are lots of readings and quizzes, and some projects and tests.
Marking in this course is insane, and fighting for your grade is impossible. Sweet woman but lectures are boring and unengaging, just reads off of the slides. Clicker questions are mandatory and tough, even the prof get confused with them and answers them incorrectly. Overall, do not recommend this course or professor.
Very disorganized, hard to follow.
As said by others the professor has a very heavy accent in which it may be hard to follow during lectures. You will need to understand the basics of chemistry as-well.
just bad dont take
CHEESE IS UNPROCESSED ION WHAT THIS PROF IS ON ABOUT
Easy course, but very rude and condescending to her students. Always talks about personal problems during class.
stretches 10 slides into 3 hours
Get ready to read? more like get ready to die. Now that all the lectures are over (thank god), I can say that the information in this course does not need to be this hard to understand. She missed 3/11 lectures which are all 3 hours long. The "AMAZING guest lectures" who took her place while gone are TAs. + Cheese is not processed, or is it? IDK.
Sweet woman but lectures are so long and information gets confusing. If you like chem, you'll probably do well. Tests are multiple choice so no way to explain yourself. Lots of memorizing random things that you probably won't ever need to know again (date ranges, people, etc.)
Assignments are graded like your life depends on it. One missed detail say goodbye to your mark. Tests are very simple though, all MCQ so if you memorize well you're good. Lectures are also stretched for the full 3 hours and are hard to follow/borderline unwatchable. Prof can be extremely condescending in class at times aswell. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!
No words...
Professor Monaldi is a wonderful professor. She's very accessible and very kind. I was not the biggest fan of this course; I do not believe it's for me. This course is pretty test-heavy and a bit harder to understand and there's some tough grading. Other than that, Professor Monaldi was very sweet.
An assignment that was due 6 weeks ago is still not graded. Grades come out so late and then the TAs grade so tough for absolutely no reason. Their feedback is also very rude. There is so many readings. So much material for a short test. At this rate I might get an A+ in math and a B in this course.
