Dr. Ramella gives pretty clear lectures, although sometimes he spends a little too much time explaining the concept. He also expects the students to answer the questions he asks them.
His tests are ridiculously hard. I study for hours, I have study groups, I do all his practice packets and I still don't do well. There's a huge curve though, so I have a B despite failing the second exam (49%). He has interesting lectures but he forgets to teach you the basics so you need to study!!
His tests are extremely difficult. Prepare to read the text book and teach yourself all the concepts. The practice problems in the book are too easy for the test. Know everything inside out or you will fail. Luckily there's a huge curve. Do practice packets. Go to CLASS. Go to office hours. Make sure he knows your name.
Ramella is a nice guy and is willing to help you don't get me wrong but he is VERY hard. He'll over explain an equation in lecture and barely explain basic problems. He assumes you've mastered understanding it so he'll give you very challenging practice problems. They aren't even found in the textbook so studying from the textbook is useless.
Had Professor Ramella for Chem 1031. Show up to Lecture as he does cover the material. Mastering Chem does assign more difficult problems than are shown in class, but the book does help with these problems and the questions are in line with the topics in class and there are only 10 questions. Go to office hours of you need help and he will give it
has a really heavy accent making him very difficult to understand He expects you to come into the class with a basic knowledge of chemistry so skips over all the basics its very easy to get lost. I had a A in chemistry in high school and failed this class homework is nothing like the examples he does in class and he moves quickly and doesnt go back
Well Dr. Ramella has tough tests than other professors. However there is a curve at the end of the semester (but you dont want to rely on curves!). No one knows what to expect on his tests (there is always a surprise). Also really helpful during office hours and a nice person to have a chat with.
He does have a very heavy accent and it hard to understand him. However, he is a funny guy and he shows a lot of experiments to clarify the materials. His test are very hard and there is always a surprise question that very hard. He curves which helps a lot of people. Mastering chemistry homework question are hard. If you need help, go to him.
It was so hard to understand him. He thinks that you know how to do problems and basically just know chemistry and he will assign you hard practice problems. Mastering chem isnt that hard considering alot of it is on google. His test are VERY hard and doesn't correlate to what he teaches. Choose wisely
Dr. Ramella is a very nice guy, but if you are looking to actually learn and understand the material, you are better off choosing Dr. Price. Dr. Ramella gives big curves, so basically 50-60 on an exam is like a B or A-. Its not that hes a bad professor, he is just really confusing and its hard to understand him sometimes.
I feel like he's teaching something else besides Chem 1; feels like chem 5 to me. After the second exam, i decided to not even go to lecture and went to price. I mean, with the curve at the end, I ended up with a C+. I wouldn't recommend if you actually want to learn. Theres too much homework and prefecture activities.
Really have to try hard in this class. I didn't understand the testing style until halfway through the course. Rather than understanding chemistry terms, make sure you can solve problems. If you can do the problems on his worksheets and the problems at the end of every chapter you will get an A, but you really have to study.
While his accent is a little heavy, if you go to his office hours he will explain a topic to you up, down, and sideways. I was super frustrated early on but by the end of the semester I really improved. He focuses more on problem-solving than concepts and curves generously. I stopped going to lecture and only visited office hours for help tbh
Dr. Ramella does have some hard tests, but he gives huge curves which is okay. If you want to pass in his class, expect to read the textbook and do practice problems otherwise, you'll get a bad grade. He will help with any question you have if you go to him. He is easily accessible and reply's to emails fast. Take him if you actually want to learn.
The best way to earn a good grade with Ramella is to pay attention during lecture and making sure you know the material inside and out. Don't skimp on the masteringchemistry homework, those are dummy points that will beef up your grade. Make sure to go over the powerpoint notes, book, recitation quizzes, and his practice packets for exams
A lot of people weren't fans of Dr. Ramella, but I know I was. Sure the tests are hard, but if you read the textbook, actually learn through mastering chemistry, and do review exams, the curve should place you in the A range. Plus, he drops your lowest exam. *If you need help, GO TO HIM! He's super chill.
(I took AP Chem in high school). Did average on the tests but the 10-20% curve always pushed me to an A. Avg was around 50% per test. Don't take if you don't know Chem well. Tests are MC/open ended, hard. He reads off power points. Boring. Take price if you want to learn tho he is little more difficult and curve is smaller
Would not recommend if you want to learn I felt lost the whole semester and switched my major bc I realized science is not my forte. He is a nice guy and is willing to help in office hours, but the material is just way to hard and you should not be relying on office hours to teach you every lesson. Curve is the only thing that didn't ruin my GPA.
I got a C in both gen chem 1 and 2. He is really great during office hours but not good at teaching. Take someone else if you want to learn
Good person. Bad teacher. You are on your own without a doubt. Tough and makes your semester hell but it's likely you'll get through it if you put in a ridiculous amount of effort. He tries to keep the class engaged and awake with jokes and piazza questions. Exam average is always an F, but the curve is everyone's savior.
Dr. Ramella was easily one of the worst professors I've ever had at Temple. He is a terrible lecturer and he provides students with nothing less than the most complicated way to solve the problems. The class also involves a lot of homework with confusing due dates - I missed a lot of assignments because I wasn't clear what was graded.
I learned more from the book than his lectures and power points. We usually are given the hardest homework problems where it's hard to even find on the internet and then go over that lesson in class (kind of). Like we are expected to know all the material before we lecture over it. you have got to catch that curve otherwise I would of failed.
I've never felt so lost about a class in my life. I've had 5 breakdowns because of this single class. If I could do one thing and go back in time it would be to come to this website and look him up because honestly he's one of the worst professors I've ever had and I've never regret taking a class so much before in my existance.
Greatest professor ever. He makes the test and homework hard because it's basically what you'll be doing in the real world, plus he drops the lowest exam anyways. He curves like super hard, usually 15-20%. Basically if you can get a 75-80 you get an A. However do expect to read the textbook and study like 3-4 hours for this class.
Professor Ramella is a very smart man but he can not teach and makes his tests VERY hard. He manages to find a way to teach every topic in the most difficult way possible. The final has nothing to do with the material he taught us and everything about this class is hard. Be prepared to teach yourself all of the material.
Definitely does not give you an easy A, but his class is very curve heavy. He uploads previous tests on the Blackboard page for you to practice from and is always there to help you There is a lot of work, but it is well worth it. You don''t have to attend class because he uploads lectures online. Go to the review sessions before tests, they help!
Dr Ramella teaches not so hard topics in hardest way imaginable, I am always lost at his lectures. I do a lot of self teaching and everything is crystal clear, however it is annoying a bit. He is smart and funny, and gives couple extra credits assignments which helped my grade a lot, he also curves. I would never take him again.
Sometimes his lectures can be confusing, but he offers an incredible amount of help outside the class and is super helpful in office hours. You DO have to put in a good amount of work, but if you truly strive to learn and do your best he will recognize it. He is super caring and gets to know students on a personal level.
Literally can't describe the amount of stress this class caused me. I have never been so lost in a class. Blames the class if the exam average is low. Gives hw before the material is taught. You're teaching yourself everything. Lecture is confusing and he makes you feel like an idiot for asking questions in recitation. Good guy, but can't teach
I LOVE THIS MAN!!! maybe he isn't the best "teacher" during the lecture, but he is caring, funny, makes his best to entertain us during the lecture with all the experiment he does. tests are hard, but there's a huge curve in the end. you can always find him in his office. i love how engage he is with his us and how he wants us to LEARN.
Chemistry is hard, duh. Ramella will make you work for it but so will any other science class. WELCOME TO COLLEGE. He is incredibly accessible outside of class, cares deeply about his students and genuinely wants them to do well. Skim the chapter before lectures, show up, practice A LOT, make sure he knows your name. You will do fine. I loved him.
Ramella is a great guy but not good at teaching. The way he teaches is just hard to understand overall but he is not out to see you fail. Try in the class and the curve will pass you
The best possible way I could spend my Friday's afternoons. Not only the greatest teacher ever, but also the greatest life form ever. I wish he was my father and brother and mentor and god.
amazing, a real treat
Dr. Ramella is a great human being, no doubt about it. His lectures are alright and will give you an idea of what you need to study. However, the textbook has rendered me useless since majority of the exam material is actually on a college level and the textbook is not. He is very approachable so take advantage of his office hours!
Avoid taking him if you can. He's a funny guy and tries to make jokes during lectures, but I have absolutely no clue what he is taking about most of the time. All of his 4 tests are hard and his class make me want to cry. He doesn't require you to get a textbook and gives you a free online one, but you do have to pay for other things.
I honestly think Ramella gets a lot of hate for no reason. He's a great guy, very helpful during office hours and not even that bad during lectures. Only skip lecture if you make an effort to watch the lectures online. Exams are difficult but the curve is huge. I had around a 70 avg on exams and ended with an A-. The guy does want you to do well.
The love of my life! He admires students who take the time to visit him during office hours, complete the extra credit assignments, and study incessantly. He doesn't focus so much on number values, but rather notices how much time and effort you put into his class. Will be taking him again! Also, attend the PASS sessions... they are SO helpful!
If you go to his office hours and make an effort to do well, he will like you and make sure that you pass his class. The course content is hard, and he knows that, so he will work with you.
Dr. Ramella is brilliant however, he is not a great teacher. He doesn't explain things clearly. His class is difficult but do-able. His curve at the end is magical and will pass you. GO TO RECITATION!!!
Great professor, my favorite chem professor that I've had in my whole life. I took chem 1 and chem 2 with him and it was great. He is always around to help you, and especially in the flipped class, he helps so much. There is a huge curve at the end of the semester (20 points) so you will pass the class.
Another semester with my favorite professor! Taking him for both Orgo 1 and 2. If you really want to learn something in chemistry and appreciate it, highly suggest you take him. He really notices how much work each and every one of his students put in. Take advantage of his office hours; he is beyond helpful.
Great guy that makes class as fun and interactive as he can for a large lecture hall. Beware of sudden online homework due date changes though. Study for tests
AVIOD
I took him for general chem 2015 during my freshman year. It was his first year at temple so since his style of teaching was not good lol it was difficult so his curve at the end of the class was huge. I heard he is still horrible but a nice guy.
Wasn't confident I was going to pass, somehow pulled out a C+, guy does not seem very nice and is difficult to understand in lecture. You will struggle on the tests they are worded very poorly.
A real treat. 4 exams, but they really help you for the final exam. Makes you want to learn organic chemistry to the best of your ability. Best orgo professor hands down... cannot wait to have another semester with him!
The course starts with Ramella moving high-speed and going much faster than any other professor; this results in very basic understandings of fundamental information, so the foundation for general chem is built poorly. However, Ramella is never not in his office, and he tries his hardest to interest the students during long lectures.
His class is very heavy on example problems. The averages were 40 on all of the exams. He was not great at explaining the concepts even though his tests focus on concepts. He makes homework due before lectures although he expressed that he would do the opposite. If you can avoid him, don't take his class. It was a nightmare.
tests are VERY hard & averages are always low WAY too much homework (due BEFORE we learn it) & adds homework last minute is accessible outside of class but there is no point because the questions on homework and practice tests are nothing like the actual test
Dr. Ramella is easily one of the best professors Ive ever had. Make sure to go to his office and get to know him, hes a wonderful guy and ALWAYS willing to help. Lectures are good but youll learn the most by going to see him personally. Quizzes/packets prepare you very well for exams. Couldnt have asked for a better orgo professor.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. Ramella is a horrible teacher. I went to office hours and met with my TA and did not receive the help i needed. I would show them problems and they would be confused how to do it sometimes. I spent so much time on this class to do poorly, just because I wasn't provided with the proper resources to succeed.
I took ramella for 1031 and that was horrible. all semester I thought I was going to fail but his curve was so huge I passed with a b-
I LOVE THIS MAN. Took all my chemistry courses with him, he's seriously the best in the department! Not only does he make you work for it and teaches you well, but is the SWEETEST human being!!!
I left a bad review for him last semester but honestly I would recommend taking him. I thought I was gonna fail the class but ended up with a B- because of the curve.
Yes, Ramella's class is not a cake walk. He makes good analogies and explains well in the lectures. He also has you get an app to answer questions (sorta like Kahoot) which he will then solve on the board. He is receptive to questions. He does cover some content very quickly, and there is a lot of online homework, but this class is doable and fun.
Best chemistry professor at temple
Ramella is a tough grader + funny guy! Beware that test averages are usually in the 50s. Dont let that discourage you since there is a massive curve at the end. ALWAYS available in office hours, willing to help, I came in at 7 PM once and he was there. The key to passing is doing all prac tests, HW and *getting the ACS study book for the final*.
Love him!!! Hes literally the best prof to take for Gen Chem, take him over Price! He knows the class is hard but he wants everyone to do well and hes always available at his office hours. Curve is huge youll pass.
Nice guy, but his exams for Orgo are all OPEN-ENDED which makes no sense since the ACS is ALL MULTIPLE CHOICE! The exams were hard too. The only good thing about him is how helpful he is in office hours and how he doesn't give homework. Besides that, his curve is very mediocre and I would not recommend him to anyone. Save yourself.
Alright here's deal. Let's face it! Chemistry is not for the weak. It doesn't matter what professor you have. Chemistry is hard! That being said, Ramella doesn't deserve the bad reputation he gets. He's super nice, accessible and always answers question. He curves the exams as well. Take HIM but expect to work for it!
Chemistry is a hard class. Ramella is a very smart professor and really tries to engage the class in his lecture. The tests are very very difficult but you will do fine if you attend every lecture and submit your online work on time. He ends up curving the tests in the end.
The worst chemistry professor at Temple. He does not care about your grade, the average is always around 50% and hes okay with that because hell curve your grade by 30%. Assigned entire chapters of homework before we learn anything related to it in lecture. Notes are not detailed, moves very fast in lecture ( 2 chapters ahead of other class)
BEFORE I SAY ANYTHING, LEMME JUST SAY HIS CURVE AT THE END OF THE YEAR IS MAGICAL. Straight bombed all the exams and still passed the class with a B-. If you are like me and is taking chem cuz you are forced to, then take Ramella. A ton of work and homework is given out like candy during Halloween, but it was all worth it cuz of the curve.
Dr. Ramella is an amazing professor. He definitely cares about his students and wants to see them succeed. With that being said, you have to work in his class. His packets and homework are meant to be difficult to get you thinking, and you have to study a lot for his exams. If you have any trouble, definitely go to his office hours
Dr. Ramella is the professor that you want to take for orgo, seriously. The material is so hard and I do not know how I would have gotten through the class if it weren't for Ramella. I would say packets and quizzes really prepare for exams. If you put in the work, it is manageable
He gave very real advice and is not afraid to tell you what he thinks. I had homework every week for seminar, but they were all assignments I could finish thirty minutes before class started. Just hand the homework in on time, and you'll pass. The presentations were boring though. Class was much better when he was just talking.
Ramella was alright. He's a funny character but doesn't really explain things in a simple manner. The class was manageable, kinda have to teach yourself. The TA's were really helpful especially during the week. Most were available from 9am-11pm. Overall, he just wants you to succeed.
Best chem professor at Temple PERIOD. Had him for both GenChem and Orgo, and I don't regret it. Besides being good at explaining things, he's very accessible outside the classroom. He's the only professor I've encountered at Temple who hosts long office hours (34hrs) five days a week. He's a real gem!
He's not a bad teacher at all. Definitely better than any other chem professor I've had so far. He likes to engage students in lecture which is always good. Just keep up with the work and you'll be fine tbh.
Dr. Ramella is one of those professors who will get you to learn Gen. Chem and not just learn enough to pass in the best way possible. I definitely feel he is credited to my success in upper level courses because of how he taught CHEM1032, do not be intimidated!
Trash teacher. Absolute garbage. This man is already on the 8th module in class after only 3 weeks when we are only have 26 modules total. Slow down buddy. The test for module 1 and 2 is not even due yet. The lectures are extremely rushed and aren't even explained well. Trash I'm telling you. He has a "sassy" personality but it's just attitude. 0/5
One of the worst teacher I've had the lectures are boring and you don't learn anything, there are modules in the class and to move on to the next module you have to get 90% or higher on the previous module or you can move on and in each module.
Yes chemistry 2 is hard. Yet Ramella makes it tolerable. He is available in his office more times than not for your questions. You do need to pass every module with a 90 or above, which sucks. But overall, I would 100% take him for chemistry.
The module system has its pros and cons; it makes it easier to secure a good grade as long as you do your work, yet the mandatory 90% on every module is excessive and the 12hr lockout between each module below 90% is unhelpful. Also Dr. Ramella teaches well, just not exactly what you see on his modules and other assignments.
Cant understand why anyone would say anything good abt him. I cant say enough mean things about him in a 350 character review. I've seen more students turn to chegg in this class than any other. Not because its very hard to learn, but because there's no point in learning from him. IF YOU CAN AVOID, DONT TAKE HIM. BIGGEST WASTE OF TUITION MONEY EVER
Avoid taking this class with Ramella. The exams and homework in this course are much more difficult than the information he provides in his lectures. He does not prepare you for unit assessments, nor the final. This class is structured towards trying to hand things on time and not missing the unit assessments, over actual learning. He is also rude.
The majority of the grade for this class was from asynchronous work with loose deadlines. He made it easy to do well as long as you show up to class and participate and do the online work.
Professor Ramella is not a nice guy. He is very intelligent, and you can see that he is passionate about chemistry, but his unreasonableness and impatience in lecture made them hard to get through.
Ramella inspired me. He is funny and extremely nice. I learned a lot in his class.
Great professor, w a very good sense of humor, very clear with his expectations. Tests are hard but he's always available and willing to help. If you fail all the tests and pass all the labs you'll still pass the class. A 50 is considered passing on a test. A decent amount of HW but it's not to time consuming. Do the work on time and you'll pass.
Ramella is really great, would definitely take again. He does provide a lot of information during lectures, so get ready to take notes. He accepts late work and accommodations, and is lgbtq+ friendly.
He was cool
cool guy, awesome professor, you will be ready for orgo sections of mcat. loves his job and his students. made us risotto on the last day of orgo 2.
Ramella is a great professor! He goes through lectures slowly and encourages questions. There are a lot of quizzes, but making friends and working together makes them easier. His exams are fair. The synthesis problems can get tricky, but the curve is very generous. Only thing is he was rarely there for office hours.
He is quite literally the most difficult professor I have ever encountered. The multiple-choice questions on his exams are ridiculous. He gives no study guides, only exams from previous years. Countless hours in the library, study groups, and pass sessions, yet the average on both exam 1 and exam 2 were Fs. And he literally DOES NOT care.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Little to no guidance at all. Exams do not line up with what is matched in the course. The TA's do not help at all and I feel so lost.
Dr. Ramella is one of the worst teachers I have had. He told us at the start of the year he hates teaching chem I because it bores him and his lectures reflect that. What he talks about in lectures does not line up with what is on exams and no materials are provided to study for what he doesn't teach. Average on exams are around 40% consistently.
Professor Ramella crushes dreams and enjoys watching his students struggle. He is known to give the hardest tests out of all the chemistry professors with very little help to prep you for what is on them. He gives his students zero structure. Literally everyone is confused and I watched so many ppl change their majors after taking him.
His lectures are good, although the homework is awful. He requires you to pass a test with a near-perfect score to begin to the next section's homework. However, if you make even 1 mistake on the test, you have to wait 1 full hour before attempting to take the quiz again. I would not recommend to someone who makes mistakes easily like me.
Honestly one of the worst, if not the worst professor I have ever had. He holds all of his students to unrealistic standards that even he admits are cruel, but then makes jokes how awful it is in lecture instead of actually coming to a solution. Take literally any other chem class you will be a lot happier.
Ramella was not very nice nor was he a great lecturer. Chem is hard, but my class consistently got 40s on exams (not the case for other sections) and was generally very confused. He was huffy and rude both times I went to his office hours, like he was angry I was there. It's clear he knows a lot about chemistry, but I would def avoid him if you can
Professor Doesn't Accurately Prepare for Any Test. He kills dreams. Do not take him if you want to go to medical school. He does not prepare you for anything and thinks it's funny to watch his students struggle.
The curve was pretty generous, with an 85+ being an A. He tends to over-teach sometimes, though. His tests are always much harder than the final, but they get you prepared for the final, which is much easier in comparison to his midterms. You needed to know your stuff to stand a chance at the recitation quizzes.
This class broke spirits. Every exam average was around a 50% and I think the highest I ever got on a quiz was a 70%. I do think that he can be a good teacher and he can be pretty entertaining, but the exams are what kills this class. The curve was amazing though and that's how I got an A-
This class triggered my survival instincts, I've never had a worse experience. The exams are near impossible since he makes them himself, and each question is worth so many points that if you get ONE wrong, you're already docked half a letter grade basically. Modules are insane too, you can't move on unless you get at least a 90% on the current one
I do not like him
The way the class is structured is very strange to me, you have to pass every single module quiz with a 90% in order to move on or the following modules will remain locked, making it very easy to fall behind. The class is very loosely structured and exams were nightmarish. Could be a good fit for some, but I didn't work well with his teaching style
The teacher is enthusiastic but his teaching style did not mesh well with me. So many of the assignments are locked so you have to complete one thing to unlock the next but the due dates are mixed up. A k or K (capitalization) could be the difference between you passing a module or having to wait an hour. The three test make up most of your grade.
I literally love Ramella. He's funny asf but also an incredible teacher. His lecture are not super boring and I took him for both Orgo 1 and 2 and I got an A in 1. His tests are kinda hard but as long as you actually want to learn the content and pay attention you will be fine.
Ramella has said in class that he does not like teaching Gen chem, evident in his lectures and the high ratings he has for Orgo on here. Always a huge gap between what he wants you to know and what you've learned in class. The volume of assignments would've been a great class structure if the questions weren't designed to be as hard as possible.
Ramella has a clear style of teaching and goes over the necessary materials in class, as well as some practice problems, which are expected to be answered through Poll Everywhere for a grade! The exams were quite tough, but if you actually put in the effort and learn everything that he is teaching, then you should be able to pass the exams.
Idk why he teaches gen chem when he obviously does not like or care to. His lectures cover easy information while the tests and homework are all of the hardest case scenarios. The way he sets up his homework modules seem lazy and unnecessarily difficult. Your grade is mostly tests, however the averages usually fall below a 60. Terrible professor.
I am fine with difficult instructors, Ramella's biggest flaw is he very RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL. He had been rude on multiple visits I had made to office hours, as well as over emails. He is canvas is very unorganized and overall the difficulty of his class should be the least of your worries. He does not care about his students.
I took Organic Chemistry II with him as the instructor, and while it was not an easy class by any means, he helped me get through it. Dr. Ramella made a point to talk to every student and was able to make the environment more comfortable to ask questions. He is a genuinely passionate educator who seems to enjoy helping people learn chemistry.
The rudest professor ever. Unbelievable
i thought my mom was my biggest hater but i guess not. i drove to school without a seat belt because i wanted to crash and dreaded entering that lecture hall.
genuinely the most horrendous professor i've ever had. do NOT take him for general chemistry under ANY circumstances for your own sanity. he constantly complains abt floods of emails after an exam/announcement a mocking way. while he teaches basic concepts, the exams are one-in-a-million scenarios/the complex version of it that we haven't learned.
Ramella genuinely cares that his students learn. His exams are difficult with lots of trick questions but, it is 100% possible to get an A. It honestly depends on the work you put in. While it's difficult, you will actually learn in this class compared to other professors. Study, go to lectures, do the work, and you'll get your A easily.
Overall good professor, definitely cares more about his higher chem classes like gen chem 2 or organic chem. I would take him again, however there's lots of homework and participation does matter.
I had Dr. Ramella for Gen Chem 1, he was decent. He had a nice curve, an 85 was an A. In order to truly understand the lectures you need to preview the material before or else whatever he says is gibberish, lecture serves as a bit of a review. Recitation quizzes are fair, exams are alright. He's a bit mean during office hours. I'd retake.
He is a tough grader, but he actually uses examples that help you understand the concept better. He is a chill guy outside of the class, and the grade percent to get an A was 85%. If you did all the homework, got 75% on all quizzes, and about a 70-80% on each exam, you could get an A.
