Love her! So helpful and easy to talk to. Three papers, revision portfolio, journal entries, and discussion board posts. Mandatory attendance, but class isn't boring. Take her! She's so great.
3 major papers, 1 revision portfolio, simple and quick free writes in class. She's willing to help you by appointment, email, or through office hours! As long as you do the work and are willing to put effort in, then you'll be fine. Need your textbook by first week of class. Take her!
Really easy class. She's a fair grader and all of her assignments are actually pretty interesting and fun (only 3). Take her!
She's a pretty easy professor, however it's more work than what my other friends had. There's a total of 9 journal entries (250 Words each), 3 papers, and a revision portfolio. She's nice and helps you with your grade. Three absences a semester, which is hard because most of the time the class seems pointless. Not a bad option for a gwrtc professor
LOVE this class. Mrs. DeRise class is challenging, but so very fun. You will definitely show yourself capabilities you did not know you had when it comes to your writing. She's helpful, very educated, and fair. Take this class!
Not a bad option for this class. There are GWRTC teachers that don't give out nearly as much work as her. There's no final exam, just a bunch of assignments and papers. She's nice, but classes just aren't interesting at all. If her class is at a convenient time though, I would take her. Put effort in your work and you'll be fine.
I LOVED Mrs. DeRise. Hands down my favorite teacher at JMU. She's so helpful with assignments and you learn so much about your own skills because she challenges you. It you can take her...TAKE HER. Awesome class.
Very sassy, has an attitude and thinks she's entitled because she went to UVA but an awesome teacher and has fun assignments. I would definitely take her but she is VERY high school about attendance
Mrs. DeRise is the best! Very kind and wants you to succeed. If you follow her instructions and attend class there is no way you will get less than a B.
Not a bad class. Really cares about your success and honestly makes you a better writer. Not an easy A but if you go to office hours shes more than willing to let you know your weaknesses. Highly recommend
Does not care at all about you as a student. Grading in unfair, picks out all the small mistakes in your writing and grades very harshly
Ms DeRise is so nice. She really jut wants everyone to succeed and is very willing to help get you there. If you make the effort, you will not be disappointed. The assignments are interesting, so that makes things a little easier. She will take off points for grammar, after all, this is a writing course. I would definitely recommend taking her.
TAKE THIS CLASS. She is so engaging, her humor is subtle so you have to look for it. Writing topics are very interesting and doesn't make you write formal papers specifically. I LOVE this class. TAKE IT! I haven't heard any other professors being anywhere near as good as her!
I absolutely loved Mrs. Derise. She genuinely cares about her students & you can tell when you're with her one on one. You could usually get a good laugh out of her class, which is good since attendance is mandatory, but she's a fair grader & lets you pick topics that interest you for the most part. Take her class!
I definitely recommend this class to anyone who is willing to take it seriously. The papers demand a lot of effort and are not easy As, but it pays off if you put in the work. Other than papers, all the assignments are simple enough. Overall, a challenging but good learning experience.
DeRise is my favorite professor ever. I learned so much in this class. I worked so hard for my A-. I got a 100 on the midterm and final and still only got an A-. It was worth it though. I can't complain
I love Mrs. DeRise. She really is a great teacher that cares about her students. She's sort of a tough grader, but she helps you out a lot. Really enjoyed the class. Definitely would recommend.
DeRise gives a lot of little assignments which are great grade boosters but you do have a lot of readings and responses to do. There are three major papers which she is more than happy to help you with in detail prior to handing it in. You can miss four classes. She's funny and nice. I'd take it again
She strives to make you a better writer and really cares and wants to help you as much as she can. She is so kind and her class is only her if you don't put any work in. Of you do what she says, and try you will do great. I loved this class
Professor DeRise was an overall okay teacher. Class was not difficult and is an easy A with little work involved. Midterm and final, 3 essays and the readings from the textbook that she assigns can all be found online. Only complaint I have is that she is not clear on grading criteria. Told me one thing was ok but then took points off for it.
Professor Derise is a respectable professor. She gives clear guidelines to what she expects in the class and in assignments. There is a good amount of reading in this class to do, but she explains each reading very well in discussions. If you go to office hours, she is very helpful! Overall, there wasn't much about her to complain about.
Nice lady. Lots of reading with 1-2 pop up reading quizzes over the whole semester. 3 papers and a midterm and final. Also a discussion leader presentation. Participation counts, 10 discussion posts and don't skip class!! Easy class, all we did was talk about the readings everyday, but can be annoying when she doesn't agree with your point of view.
Readings that are discussed every class; participation definitely matters so make sure you have an understanding of the reading. Three essays throughout the semester; all relatively short, easy grader too. Attendance policy; allowed 4 skips. Honestly, as long as you show up and put in some effort, you'll pull off an easy A. I'd take again.
There is a lot of reading, but it is very interesting. Her grading is split up so tests are not worth everything. Participation is important, it also keeps things fun and interesting. She is very relaxed and an overall chill professor.I recommend taking her.
Loved this class! Definitely wast easy but it was so worth it! 2 big writing assignments and then a final 6 - 8 page research paper and smaller readings throughout. She is really caring and wants her students to do well but also learn as much as possible. Loved this class and the professor. Make sure you put in the effort because it will pay off.
Professor Derise is okay. She refuses to give a 100 on any assignment, which is why I received an A- and not an A in the class. There's a lot of articles to read and annotate and a 6-8 final paper. She also likes to have class when there's nothing to go over instead of just canceling. She's quirky and can be a little passive aggressive.
Ms. DeRise is absolutely hilarious. I loved her class especially because I really enjoyed literature about the body. She is a very easy grader. As long as you attend her class and pay attention, you will easily get an A or B. She allows for 4 absences.
Super sweet lady however if you miss more than 4 classes she tends to be passive aggressive towards you. Majority of the readings are online but that doesn't help for tests because both tests were open book and open notes. Tough grader on papers even when you go to office hours. Grade is consumed of papers, discussion posts, & class participation
need to be in class.. exams are very lecture heavy. she cares about her students and is very realistic/understanding
Ms. DeRise was the best teacher to have for wtrc103. Everyone talked about how boring their other professors were so I didn't have high hopes about the class. but I honestly looked forward to going to her class every week. textbook is only $15, lets you choose research paper topic, class participation is key for A, gives plenty of time for assigmen
I learned so much from Mrs. DeRise! Really enjoyed having her as a teacher for WRTC 103. Definitely would recommend this class with her, just show up and put in some effort.
Ms. DeRise was super nice. she was extremely helpful and help many class discussions based on our questions. She was a fast grader and always provided great feedback.
I absolutely loved Professor DeRise. She is very very good at what she does. She gives great feedback, grades super fast and I really learned a lot about writing and analyzing in her class. On top of that you can tell she is EXTREMELY smart and really knows what she's talking about. The best professor that I've had at JMU.
Class is blasé and most of the time is spent on her cynical perspective about everything thats not her picture of an ideal world.
Danielle will start your semester off by giving you on a unnecessarily hard reading quiz which almost everyone failed. She is also very subjective grader and if she doesn't like you, she will most likely continue to give you bad grades without good feedback. She also answers questions in a condescending way towards her students.
For someone who is supposed to be teaching a critical thinking class in reading and writing, she surely stifles students ability to write and read critically. Everything in this class is either done her way, (which is often very vague) or you will fail. She also rambles about the same stuff in class without sounding confident in herself.
Hard grader with little to no directions about assignments. Very hard to ask questions because shes condescending.
The class was supposed to be a critical reading and writing class but nothing was good enough unless it was done her way. Dont recommend.
I seriously put 100% into this class but my grade dropped because I included a small idea she didnt agree with. Thought I deserved a better grade. This class was too hard for a gen ed.
Her grading criteria was very hard to understand. Id thought I was doing something good then I got the paper back and everything was just wrong. I did learn a little bit but this class really wasnt for me.
Class environment was so boring Id rather watch the grass grow. Too many lectures about opinions and more lectures on actual writing wouldve been better. Supper hard grader to
I usually like reading but the books in this class were super boring. All the class meetings were about body image and became very uncomfortable. The grading was super hard too because it was very hard to figure out what the expectations were.
Derise is such a great professor. I loved her class so much and would have loved to take her again. She poses great questions, gets you thinking, and has you read some of the most interesting stuff! If you enjoy literature, she's a great person to have. Her classes really aren't that hard either, you just need to do the reading and participate.
derise is a great option for a teacher if youre ready to think deeply and discuss. participation does matter and there will be nights with a lot of reading, but shes an excellent teacher and the conversation is always engaging. definitely recommend to take for gen ed credit
Cantankerous lectures. Discussion always fall flat the second you dont agree with her. Too much work for a gen ed and no Clear directions
Really shouldve dropped this class when I had the chance. The class was supposed to be a critical reading class but almost every idea I had was smothered by her opinions that she thought were correct. Grades too harshly and really doesnt give clear directions about what shes expecting.
Cant seem to ever get motivated in this class. Everything I attempted to do was criticized negatively more for the sake of criticism purposes rather than helping me become a better writer. Making matters worse was there wasnt any clear directions on how the work was to be done.
Professor DeRise is definitely my favorite Gen Ed professor I've taken. There are readings due for most classes and two big papers, but other than that all that is really expected of you is to show up and be ready to discuss the readings. She made it a point to know everyone's name by the second week and genuinely cares for her students.
Started off liking this class but then the classes became redundant. There was a lot of irrelevant information given about my writing. Told me I was doing good then I get the grade and theres nothing good about it. Too many contradictions. Im really happy this class is over.
Graded more in her personal opinion rather than the actual written content. It was hard to determine what she considered good and bad. Questions during lectures were answered sarcastically and condescendingly.
Agony plain and simple. Nothing we talk about is relevant but since SHE is talking about it SHE thinks its relevant. Grades too hard for gen ed.
I love her. She is so organized, and she really cares a lot about her students. She knows how to teach online very well, and her assignments are not hard at all if you stay up to date. She is always available via email, and is always willing to chat. She is a great professor, as well as a great person!
She is very good at teaching online and just a super nice lady. Always has extra help sessions available and responds to emails ASAP
She is super nice and really easy to talk to. She responds really quickly to emails and can be reached very easily. Her grading is also very clear and straight forward, and she has a lot of grades.
She was really nice and caring. She posted a weekly module with a lesson and assignments. She held a few classes which only a few people showed up to unless they were mandatory. The format of the syllabus was sort of confusing but you understand it as you go. She's not a harsh grader as long as you do what the rubric says. She gives extra credit
DeRise was my favorite professor, she was amazing and the class was easy. She is very organized and replies to emails fast as she is always there to help. No textbook is required so not a lot of reading! And a lot of the stuff listed in modules (like lectures) arent necessary to get a good grade. She also offers extra credit
Professor DeRise is such an amazing person, she truly cares about her students. At first, I didn't care about the class and was dreading it but then I put in the work and she noticed my potential. Thanks to her, I made WRTC my minor (eventually I changed it to my major). Just put in the effort and you'll be fine.
Great professor. Gives feedback telling you exactly what you missed and it's easy to make up for one or two bad grades. Just do all the work on time and put a bit of thought into it. Not an INCREDIBLY EASY A+ but a fair one
I had DeRise for both HUM200 & WRC103, & she is probably one of the most passionate professors I have met at JMU. She's very understanding but only if you put enough effort into your work. HUM200 was a load of reading and annotating, & WRTC was a less load of work. She gives great feedback & overall she has a great personality.
Mrs. DeRise is a great professor! She is very engaging and makes the effort to get to know each student. Most homework is reading articles or submitting small assignments. There's a smaller group project and a large individual paper. She always explains assignments really well. Go to class!! She talks in depth about every assignment in class!!!!
DeRise is a great teacher and grades super easy. Although her lectures can seem repetitive and boring at times, there's not much homework and only one short paper.
Very boring. Very repetitive. Monotone. Sarcastic.
Prof DeRise honestly was the best teacher I had this semester. Always accommodating and makes herself available when you need to talk to her, and is just a kind, genuine person. Has a lot of soft due dates to help if you are behind in her class and even at that, the work isn't that difficult, one big project at the end and little bits of homework.
Make sure you show up to class and put the effort in, you'll get the grade you deserve. She's very understanding of special circumstances
She is a real gem! This class is basically a review of the writing stuff we learned in high school. She assigns relevant, interesting readings and allows you to choose what to write about for the main project. She is very passionate about what she teaches and very understanding of students!
Ms. DeRise is very understanding if you're sick or can't make it to class and I'm pretty sure she doesn't have an attendance policy. She very lenient with providing extensions it you really need it, she's also extremely willing to work with you and help you so that you don't struggle in your class. Slight work and she cares about her students.
I was very happy with this class. Professor DeRise was very helpful & always gave you feedback on work. The midterm & final were very similar to each other, both take home tests. On every graded assignment I was able to share my work for feedback before submitting & her online office hours were very useful if ever needed. I would highly recommend!
Easy grader, get your work in on time. She makes it clear what's needed and doing stuff by the deadline makes things easy. You're fine procrastinating all semester if you can write well. However the lectures are very boring and she's not helpful in finding stuff on canvas. She believes it's organized and it's a scavenger hunt somedays to find info.
Grades pretty easy but the lectures are boring. There were times when it seemed like she was desperate to make us like her (almost forcing us to like her) but that never totally happened. Tends to be scattered and blames us if we cant figure out her organization.
I loved having Miss DeRise. She is super caring and gives amazing individual feedback and really shows that she cares about each of her students. Attendance not mandatory but DEFINITELY helps when doing assignments. If you talk in class and turn work in on time, this will be an easy A.
She is extremely understanding and wants her students to feel safe and comfortable. Her assignments were pretty straight forward and werent a ton of work. She gives tons of feedback on assignments and normally if you give in a little bit of effort youll get a good grade.
Getting a good grade in this class is not hard but getting through the class and her boring lectures are the hard part. Very open to helping you but her teaching skills need a boost.
Professor Derise is such a nice person. I was nervous on her reviews before taking the class. She seems like she is a hard grader when she explains things but I ended up getting good grades on everything. She give good feedback and is there if you need her. Definitely more work then other wrtc teachers but not bad at all.
I feel that I have benefitted the most from Ms. DeRise's teaching style. She is very organized and along with her syllabus comes a color coded calendar! She is very clear about what needs to be done to do well in her class and she gives excellent feedback. Very understanding of everyones circumstances and makes WRTC a more manageable class to take
Professor DeRise is a solid choice for WRTC. Attendance is not mandatory however she does keep track and wants you to go. She usually assigns one or two assignments a week, normally pretty easy. They do feel like busy work sometimes. Her lectures can get really boring. No quizzes or tests, just writing assignments. She is definitely a easy grader.
idk how she has a 3 rating she should have a 5. The only way I can imagine you failing this class is if you don't turn anything in. The class is easy and she is an excellent professor. No test, no mandatory attendance, and no textbook. If you're taking WRTC take it with her. She's clear and concise with assignments, but never harsh.
prof.derise is an excellent professor. i took her fall 2021, only way to fail is not turn in assignments. she is wonderful and always is willing to meet outside of class and gives super helpful advice. makes class engaging and does group work at times. highly recommend
Ms. DeRise is a great choice for 103! She is very caring and understanding, and is always willing to talk or give feedback. Her assignments feel like busywork sometimes, but if you follow the rubrics and turn things in, you'll do just fine. Attendance is encouraged but not mandatory, which is really nice! I totally recommend her!
Ms. DeRise is an amazing professor. She cares about her students deeply and wants them to do well. Her feedback is outstanding and really helps your writing grow. The final was simple which was nice when you have other intense finals. Attendance isn't mandatory but you'll get behind if you don't go. She does ask that you come certain days though.
Ms. DeRise was a great gen ed teacher. The class had just the right amount of work. We had homework around once a week and assignments could be completed in 30 mins. Every assignment in her class connects to the next so you're never left feeling confused. Overall, very straight forward and would recommend!
She is AMAZING. I have chronic conditions and had to miss a lot of classes. She was incredibly patient and helped me so much. Offers 72hr grace on most assignments for all students for up to 90% credit. And offered me longer extensions after emailing her. Incredibly caring and understanding. helps a lot when i have questions or need clarification.
Very easy gen ed filler. She is very nice and understanding of things. Assignments can be time consuming but never are that hard. Lectures can be pointless and boring but never dreaded going to class.
I thought that she was a very caring and understanding professor however I found that the course itself outweighed this positive and made this course awful. Practically every week we were forced to write an essay on a boring topic. This made it made it very hard to stay motivated and do the work when it seemed like every single topic was pointless
DeRise is a super nice and easygoing professor, there are no essays or exams, just a variety of mini projects that are related to your intended career path. Sometimes the work feels like busywork, but if you just do it and show/put in effort, you will do well! Attendance not mandatory but it's important for the big assignments.
I can honestly say this professor has been one of my favorites at JMU. She is incredibly caring, understanding, and genuinely want their students to succeed. Communication is easy whether it was through email or just asking questions in class. As long as you show up to class and keep up with the assignments, you'll do well.
Ms. DeRise was super sweet. There were three major projects (one was a group project), but none of them necessarily had to be essays (I did two slideshows & an opinion article). The final is just filling out a rhetorical table (super easy). Just show up when she says to & make sure to turn in each step for the projects and this class is an easy A!
I can not say anything bad about Ms. DeRise. She let me turn in a large project late with a small penalty. 100% recommend her to anyone!
