Very knowledgeable teacher.
This guy is a nasty piece of work. In the case of papers, he gives everyone the same grade and takes points off for things such as omission of page numbers. Worst of all, he dodges questions in order to avoid showing his ignorance/stupiditity on a topic, which is most of the time and ridicules students for things like having an uncommon name.
all we did in this class is take majority vote quizzes and readings..... every single day... would advise not taking him if at all possible
The teacher had no importance in my training he was just a teacher, his classic method is unsatisfactory and can not disrespect the host material.
Hellcaious. Adkison is the biggest tool on the planet. Don't take him if you want to enjoy your next semester.
I had him for both Political Thought and Const Law. I will never, NEVER, take another course with him again. He has a lot of knowledge to offer but that is totally overshadowed by his condescension toward students; I have both witnessed and experienced it. He spends as much time talking about himself and his publications as he does the material.
Okay, so yea, I have to admit this class was not very fun and I stressed over it. But here is a secret, everyone ends up with A's! (At least in American Government). Yes, he can be condescending most of the time, but just brush it off, and move on with your day. It's all going to be okay. I promise.
He is a HORRIBLE teacher. Mostly talks about himself and all of the things he has done and the people he knows. He is absolutely impossible to reach. He gives you a phone number and an email address on the syllabus, but never returns phone calls (even with voicemails left!) or emails. DO NOT take him. "Extra credit" doesn't exist!
Adkison is a god among men. I adore him. He knows the constitution like the back of his hand and while he rarely is on topic that makes the class way entertaining. You have to really be into con law to get his sense of humor, but if you do you will adore him.
He is pretty condescending, but you can't hate on him just because he knows more than everyone else in the room combined. He's awesome and extremely entertaining, you just have to get used to his style of teaching... and don't yell out anything dumb in his class.
The trick to his class is going, and RECORD THE LECTURES. He gives weekly quizzes and 100 percent of the material is from lecture. You do not use the textbook.
Do not take!! Worst teacher ever. Was no help at all. Class stressed me out and negativly effcted my other grades. Stay away if at all possible.
Don't go into this class expecting to get an A, because it is not going to happen. He definitely knows what he is talking about and loves government, but the quizzes are nearly impossible. I emailed him multiple times throughout the semester and he never responded to me.
All his quizzes are from his lectures, but he picks the smallest details that he barely mentions to put on the quizzes. Also he isnt very helpful when you ask him for help in the class. awful class. take someone else if you can.
This class was very easy and he was a good professor. As long as you listened during lectures, then you did well in class. The class was basically just quizzes and writing short summaries of articles. It was all easy points. I would recommend this professor for POLS1113.
Absolutely atrocious teacher. Why would anyone who obviously dislikes students go into teaching? He is condescending, pompous, rude, and puts students down. Asked a friend of mine why he would associate with a student like me. I have made all As except his class. He's terrible. Avoid him at all costs. Completely tool, and should not teach.
Without a doubt the most knowledgable professor I've ever had. He's obsessed with Const. law and James Madison, and I can say I now know more than almost anyone about our country's background. He's high on himself, but he's also brilliant. And probably as flexible with grading and assignments as possible. If you want to learn, TAKE HIS CLASS.
great guy, great prof. take his class if you like con law
A good sense of humor and a knowledgeable teacher. Need extra help? Perhaps go the the library
Loved this class. This is definitely one of my favourites at OSU. Expect arrogance and some confusion with this professor, but it's worth it. He knows his stuff and is passionate about what he teaches. If you are willing to learn, work, and pay attention an A is achievable.
Hated this class. Lectures are kind of random, and doesn't go along with the book.
This class was difficult at times, but totally worth it. I'm even a POLSCI major, but this is one of the best classes I have taken. Sure he can be somewhat arrogant, but listen to one of his lectures and you will understand. Brilliant professor. I would definitely recommend this class!
I'm taking POLS 1113 with Adkison now. He's a brilliant man when it comes to government, but I must say that he is out of touch with what it's like to be a Freshman, so don't expect any sympathy. All in all I'd say despite his lectures being informative and interesting, don't take him unless you enjoy dealing with arrogance & being talked down to.
His lectures are amazing and he is a fair grader. He does not give study guides for his test, so you should take lots of notes. If you have something to say in his class, then you should definitely think about it before you speak. Overall, he is a excellent professor and shares a good relationship with most of his students.
He isn't afraid of questioning anyone's credibility, literally. He is passionate and very well knowledgeable, would take this class again in a heartbeat!
"The best you're probably gonna do is a 7 or 8 out of ten" - Dr. Adkinson to our class, concerning the weekly journal we had to write
He was a terrible teacher. I have never struggled in class like I did in this one. Record the lectures because you won't use the book. He doesn't give you grades, and the first test is going to be all essay. He uses off the wall questions on tests so remember the little things. I would just recommend a different teacher, anyone is better than him.
Doesn't follow the syllabus and literally took the whole class to bash on Trump. The tests have no relevance to what he talks about in class and I have learned nothing about the government which is what he is supposed to be teaching.
never ever take a class with him
Was a tough class but super useful. There is a lot of tangents
This class was awful. His note were all over the place, and it was not clear on what to study for the tests. He Should NOT be a teacher. He uses his opinion on most things. sells books more than the topic of the lecture. what he writes on the board is not what he talks about.
Good Teacher. The class is extremely lecture heavy. The only opportunity for points is the exams and the final. The material for exams comes from a majority of his lecture, so make sure you take good notes. Also, his lecture kinda goes all over the place. If you are interested in the subject take his class.
Its mainly based on lectures and the only grades you have are 3 exams and the final. He about failed my entire class.
This class was an honors add-on, he showed up to class asking where we left off instead of having a gameplan before coming to class, all over the place in lectures.
Sometimes Dr. Adkison would come to class unprepared. For example, he'd ask "what did we do last time?" The phrase "all over the place" doesn't give justice to the disorganization of his lectures. You don't get many assignments/quizzes during the semester, so make them count. The final consists of responding to two prompts in essay form.
The most scattered professor you could ever have. He goes off on tangents that make no sense. He does not tell you the grade until the end of the class. All of his assessments were based on papers many of which were based on obscure pieces of information he mentioned once. He also never remembers what he taught during the last class.
This prof doesn't even teach. He doesn't include any kind of material during his lectures. He often rambles on unnecessary topics that have nothing to do with the content of the class. I find myself sitting in class doing absolutely nothing because he doesn't teach any kind of actual information.
Supposedly, he bases his tests off of lecture, but he asks test questions about incredibly obscure or completely unrelated things. He doesn't understand technology well, so he doesn't use anything like PowerPoint slides or virtual notes. He also won't cooperate with students and help them succeed.
His online section consists of poorly filmed youtube videos in which he rambles for a minimum of 1 hour. He'll bring up a topic, ramble about nonsensical things for 30 minutes and he MIGHT circle back to the topic at hand. He doesn't reply to emails and the textbook is a waste of money because his exam questions are obscure and unrelated.
Dr. Adkison is the most scattered professor I have ever had. His lectures are almost unbearable. They are 1 hour long lectures but could easily be 30 minutes if he actually stayed on topic. The textbook is a waste of 87 dollars because he doesn't ever reference it or use it on the tests. Do whatever you can to avoid this class. You've been warned.
Rarely uses canvas. Provides no slides, so good luck reading the board. Very unorganized, passionate, but does not stay on track for lectures.
Lectures are scattered, no slides & he tends to go off on tangents to brag about himself. Basically your only grades are exams which are 2-3 essay questions each. Literally dont buy the textbook its worthless. Nearly impossible to make an A if you bomb the first exam and he will laugh at you if you ask how to get an A in his class.
Pretentious. Not afraid to say things like "well I'm an English prof and you're not". He gives 0 guidelines on essays, then will grade them as if it were a structured English course. Will count off for writing styles that differ from his, really, he corrected many of my words used in essays to direct synonyms. for any reference, I am an A student.
Professor Adkison is not the type of professor I recommend. While he is very knowledgeable in his subject and shows passion for it, that's about all I have to say. There is no canvas for the class and homework is kinda just said without much explanation of what to do. Papers are vaguely outlined and graded heavily. lectures felt improvised.
Zero structure on canvas/syllabus making it difficult to plan due dates or know what to read exactly and when. Gave an exam the first week with no exact details on the exam material; emailed the day before that you have until 8:30pm the next day to complete. This felt completely messy especially since I work full time and got no preparation time.
I have never written a bad review about a professor but he was terrible. Lectures were boring, no visual aids for visual learners, and tests were literally opinionated. Just take another professor.
Extremely unorganized. Lectures often are side tracked and have nothing to do with the material or quizzes. I shouldn't say material because there is none, I wouldn't be surprised if he was improvising the entire semester. He doesn't even use canvas. You will be miserable if you take this class, change it or withdraw at all costs.
Dr. Adkison was very unorganized and was constantly moving quizzes and such because we were never on schedule. I want to think Dr. Adkison is a nice person, but I saw at times where he would talk down on students if they didn't understand something in the readings. Not a hard class, just a very difficult instructor to have teaching the material.
He is an old school professor grades arent posted on canvas till the end of the semester. His questions come from what he writes on the board. He is a bit unorganized but he will always let you makeup exams whenever. The most important thing is that I have never seen anyone in his class fail and I have taken every class that he has offered.
Absolutely do NOT take this professor if you aren't a Political Science major. If you are taking it for "fun", PICK SOMETHING ELSE. I can't even lie and say "Oh well, he was nice so this class was worth it." NO.He graded ONE test from Sep. and didn't grade anything else until he released FINAL GRADES IN DEC. This class was a complete waste of time.
