You don't have to learn a thing in this course, just memorize.

The course requires a LOT of work. A brilliant guy. The more work you do, the better the course learning experience. Highly recommended!!!!
-Pronounces gigawatt as jiggawatt -Told me that methane and natural gas are not interchangeable answers on a test
Hmmm I think I plunked the first test =(.
It is his way or no way.
Blech
An extremely picky marker. Make sure every single one of your commas are in place, because he will. Knowledgeable, but not a positive teaching style. Constantly criticizes during presentations, which humiliates each student.
He named his text-book "climatology: the 'hard' science" Need I say more? If the U of T geography department wants to make sure that undergrads keep taking geo courses, they have to ensure that this guy is NOT allowed to teach any more under
Seems like a good guy. For a hard class he does a good job. I agree Jiggawatt is annoying
brutal - do NOT take this. course description makes it appealing but its absolutely boring and tough.. if you don't need it, don't take it.
A very LOW average for the first mid-term..and doesn't even bell curve it. What an assh***. If you must take this, work VERY HARD. Enjoys talking about bulidings and wind turbines for some reason...

he interupts students too much. he asks a question expected us to answer it, but once we open our mouths, he just answers it. THEN WHY ASK???
This course is challenging. Be prepared to do a lot of studying. He is a good lecturer and, suprisingly for U of T, actually passionate about what he does. Kinda like the teacher in South Park mmmK?
very hard.. and actually tells you that you are not smart enough
A positive is that he has a lot of energy for lectures and really knows what he is talking about. The negative, is that the first midterm test was really difficult (50% average). When he suggested that people spend 12 hours to study for each lecture he wasn't kidding. Course is the HARDEST social sciences I have ever taken at U of T.
His teaching is very clair, material is hard, but also very interesting. I've learnt a lot in this course, in fact one of my favourite classes in University.
Tough material and he has high expectations. Grad students in the planning department can take this course. That said, it is very interesting and he does a good job of explaining the details. Bonus: no papers or assignments, just 2 tests and a final. Warning: You will be unprepared for the first test, study hard and know everything.
Make sure u do the assignments early so as to have time buffer for clarifying questions u dont understand!! Maths are not hard but materials can be confusing somehow. If possible, i do think all classes can go more than 3 hours....kinda rush for 2hrs a week.
hard course, and he teaches too fast
The assignments are brutal...unless its mandatory under your program, dont take this class PERIOD
Wrost prof ever. A lot of material to go through and memorize for tests and final.
This professor is by far, the wost at UofT. Not only is he rude, not approachable, he obviously does not want his students to do well. The average on the first mid-term was 46%. Do not take this course if it is not mandatory. If you have to take it, be prepared to study like you've never studied before.
Professor is extremely rude to students.attitude towards helping students is non-exisistant.I find it hilarious that on his office door there is a sign Undergraduate Coordinator.A collegue went to correct their midterm grade as it was sumed incorrectly.Harvey responded telling this person that their math was bad yelled at her and told her to getout
Midterm questions involving the tiniest of details and seemingly unimportant statistics. Required readings are huge, and include long winded papers that only partially relate to key issues. Being a civil engineering major, I've taken numerous courses that discuss climate change, and ggr314 in comparison is just plain ridiculous. Stayyy away.
Very rude and hostile to students. He must feel threatened by our superior intelligence. His lectures attempt to dictate his viewpoints rather than to inform and EDUCATE of the real problems. he must be the hilter of global warming.
very bad
Not suitable as a university professor. More interested in his own research than educating. Rude to students.
You are required to memorize alot of number. For example: the lifespan of CO2 in the atmosphere, the lifespan of CH4 in the atmosphere. CH4: I still remember is 8 years. Then you have to compare the energy consumption difference between electricity powered by coal and natural gas! The specifics are just way too detail..
One of the most interesting professors at UofT! I absolutely enjoyed his material and classes, although I know at least 10 more people who would disagree with me. The tests and assignments are EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. Therefore do not take his courses if you don't plan on being under stress and working extra hard. I also had him for GGR203 and JGE348.
i often browse in his classes at the unfortunates souls who are in his class, then i go ROFLWAFFLE
Excellent!!!!
The material is interesting, but worst teaching methods of any class I have ever had in all my years in school. He basically expects you to memorize pages and pages of information. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS unless it is mandatory for your program, you will needlessly slaughter your GPA.
This class was a huge mistake. I very much am interested in the topic of global warming but the way in which it is taught leaves a lot to be desired. I studied for this more than the rest of all my courses combined, yet the grade was the worst. Average for first 3 midterms were in 40s and 50s. Avoid unless mandatory.
Extremely hard and confused. Too fast lecture. He yells at students. he thought every one should understand the concept, but no one does in the class.
He's so interested in what he teaches, it really shows in his lectures. If you follow along and attend all the lectures, you're able to do well in the course. Takes a decent amount of work, but it's extremely interesting. Thoroughly enjoyed this course.
Incredible lectures, but by far the most bizarre tests I ever took during my U of T undergrad. I eventually dropped the course to save my GPA, which is ridiculous considering I got into a Master's in Environmental Science at U of T. Overall it would have been a great course if it had measured my understanding of the issues covered. It didn't.
Be prepared for the most insane semester of your life with this guy. Not only is the content overwhelming and confusing, the assignments are a killer to understand and complete - they're also huge timesinks. Class averages are fairly low, around 55%. 010 biggest GPA killer of all time.
Without a doubt the worst professor I've ever had. Lectures seem easy, then you get the assignments and tests and realize that he didn't actually teach you anything that is asked of you. Rather, he spends the vast majority of lecture time describing obvious graphs and numerical data that can explain themselves. Hilariously terrible.
Horrible class. Don't know how I'm gonna pass finals. Don't take it. Try avoiding at all cost!!!
If you are a genuine learner who desires to improve learning ability and change the world - this course is for you. He is an incredibly knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and supportive professor. His course content is highly structured and informative, and will improve your attention to details without losing the big picture. I love 314 and I got an A+.
If you're looking for an easy course, or need to boost your gpa, AVOID this prof at all costs. The first test is super easy to make people stay in the class, but then get impossibly hard. He pretty much expects you to memorize every word of his lecture notes and does not give reviews for tests. Least favourite prof at u of t, hands down.
The word in the Geography dept is that Danny Harvey wants to only do research and not teach. Of course, UofT doesn't work that way. So he makes his class difficult so the faculty knows he is not a great prof, which is actually true. He is very knowledgeable as a researcher but uses primitive methods of teaching through memorising. GPA killer.
I took his Global Warming class in 2006. There were three tests. I completely flunked the first one. But busted my butt and killed the next two. Dr. Harvey is incredibly passionate about Climate Change, and this course changed my life and understanding of the climate and the world.
I just completed this course yesterday and must say it was more difficult than I imagined it would be. I still loved it. I thought Professor Harvey was excellent. Kind of "old school". Put away your cell phones and pay attention. Read your notes before lectures for better understanding. He may seem a bit dismissive sometimes but not mean. Good Prof
Poor professor. The first quiz was very easy but after that the assignments and tests became increasingly difficult. He did not explain how to complete the assignments and was very vague and uninterested in my questions during office hours. While you may be able to do well the amount of work put into this course really takes away from other courses
My head is spinning from his "answer" to my fairly simple question just now. It's hard to believe that somebody with so much academic XP can be such a poor instructor. His lectures are extremely confusing and in GGR314, he had absolutely no grasp of a reasonable workload for students (GGR348 is fine, though). He wants to do research, not teach.
He is the worst professor I have ever met in these four years, 100+ pages slides in each 2-hour class, and he even does not what is teaching. His class will only teach things like principle and common senses but the problem sets will test you so many strange calculation and you have to learn these things by yourself. Very tough class, and very mean
To all those dedicated to changing the world for the better!
Worst class I have taken by far. Doesn't even know his own subject material - reads off slides and still makes mistakes when speaking. Extremely physics heavy - between myself and a physics major could only get a 60 on problem sets. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. Was extremely excited to take as subject material looked interesting but very disappointed.
Do not take his class!!!
Disorganized and too technical for an introductory class. While he seems very knowledgeable about the subject, it's presented in a way that's difficult to grasp. Some problem sets dealt with concepts that had yet to be covered in lecture, and two of them were due in a period of one week, at the end of the semester no less!
SMART
Lots of content that you basically have to memorize in detail, but none of the information is superfluous. he really cares about the topic and field
Terribly organized lecture slides full of text that he reads off, the instructions for his problem sets are so confusing that they're impossible, lectures are EXTREMELY information-dense but he never specifies what you need to know for exams. I could go on but there's a character limit. Save yourself, don't take his classes if you can avoid them.
Awfully organized lectures. Expects you to remember every word on his PPTs. His problem sets are 50% of your final grade but he doesn't teach you a single PS concept. PSs are quantitative, but lecs are all qualitative. I'm in engineering - for a GGR course, the difficulty of the PSs was shocking. Class average was C-, horrifying for a GGR course.
Tough class. Expect you to memorize every word. The lectures and notes are all over the place. Don't recommend it at all.
A nice prof
This class makes me hate the environment
One of the worst professors at U of T. Students deserve so much better. Just read the awful reviews. Enough said.
His lecture was absolutely garbage. Only general qualitative facts but his problem sets require lots of calculation that he never taught in lectures. Such a tough grader that any small mistake will receive 0 in that section. The worst part is he uses excel for mathematic calculation. Who uses excel for real math????????
Basic lecture with the complicated problem set.
Worst GGR course I have ever taken.
Problem sets are difficult, and the lectures may not be enough to complete the problem sets. Assumes that all the concepts are easy while students are struggling. Inaccessible outside of class, doesn't respond to emails.
tough grader, it is easy to get a 0, do not take his class!!!
The difficulty between lectures and assignments does not match. Comments on the graded assignment are not clear. Takedown marks for grammar and spelling. Extremely tough grader. Instructions on the midterm are not clear, he extended the midterm 30 more min but deducted marks for submission if you were late for the original deadline. NO HARVEY COURS
Don't waste your time on this course and this prof
Here's the thing about Danny that I've come to realize over the years. I took GGR203 with him in 2020 and thought he was a total hard-***, the course was hell, and I dropped out to avoid failing. Here I am 2 years later in 314 and my entire view has changed. The course is demanding, very demanding, but absolutely fantastic, and its worth the work.
I agree with some of the previous comments about Professor Harvey that his class is indeed quite challenging, one of the hardest A to get. However as I progress in my university career, my appreciation for what I have learned in his class keeps growing. He is without a doubt an inspirational professor both for GGR and for life.
Worst professor I’ve ever had. Does not care about students. Grading is unreasonable, will get 0 on questions for minor grammar or spelling mistakes. Terrible educator and scientist. Told us to “work harder” but I’m convinced there is nothing we could have done. 1/5.
Horrible professor and "scientist." His communication skills are in the toilet. Awful beyond belief. 1/5. Never again. Makes me hate the environment x 1000.
He's always willing to help, even for some basic questions.
Problem sets are difficult and time-consuming, but tests are relatively easy. Interesting course content.
shitty prof
if you go to all his office hours you might be able to scrape by, otherwise gl
the quiz system was awful. Gives u an automatic 0 if u make a spelling mistake and he was too lazy to change it. Very, very dense notes given that he basically reads off. Doesn't care about students. Very poorly taught course. Beware.
You have to buy textbook from him or this course will not work. I already spent $6000 for this course but I would never be mistreated like this.
Avoid him if you can. Did so in 2016 and will do so again. His rules are hilarious. You have to buy textbooks from him otherwise this course will NOT work. This is absolutely mistreatment and disrespectful.
Really bad. I mean really. Super preachy. You have to buy the textbook he wrote. ALWAYS, ALWAYS runs over time as if People dont have class after. Just reads off the textbook. REALLY bad at explaining. Blames students for not understanding things he didn't explain.
Grades arbitrary and pedantic, you will not feel satisfied with this course even if you genuinely enjoy the subject because of this professor.
Absolutely horrendous, his lectures are dull and provide no practical understanding to the use of energy and its effects on economies and societies as a whole. The course feels more like chemistry/physics rather than human geography. Problem sets are only calculations on excel whereas exams expect you to write about random topics from HIS book.
Lectures were pretty much completely useless, doesnt do much to help you complete assignments. Excel assignments are extremely confusing and a huge time eater. Midterm was extremely difficult. Avoid this course and professor, the class was very unpleasant to experience and I wish I had my time back.
If you're not interested in Atmospheric Science and need a science course, choose something else. If Climatology is a burning interest for you and you're willing to endure lots of study and review, this is THE course. Its dense as hell, but you learn up to a 3rd year level on one 12 week course. Its amazing.
The workload is massive and the content is incredibly dense. Assignments are long, complex, and very time-consuming. Even if you're trying your best, grades often end up lower just because of how demanding everything is. Prof also gets easily frustrated when students ask questions, especially during tutorials.
Prof. Harvey isn't everyone's favourite. He is extremely strict on letter-by-letter formats and will not accept indirect answers. Taught me plenty about being concise and changed my entire study style—basically turned me knowledgeable and very direct. Great figure. Learnt a lot.
Here are some tips if you can't drop: Download grammarly or smth similar (marks can be taken off for a missing comma in a discussion post) Term tests are literally the end of chapter questions from the tutorials (memorize WORD FOR WORD) The 5% assignment is weird just go to office hours to check if you're on the right track
More tips: Start the online quizzes early and make sure to format the answers exactly as in his required $20 textbook. Go to tutorials, easy marks. Keep in mind the word limit when writing the summary and discussion posts.
The class average was a D. I'm not even sure what advice to give on how to pass the class or do better because I think it really just is that hard of a class. Prof just really seemed to think that we all just weren't trying hard enough and that we were too occupied by things happening on our phones. An A might be achievable, but at what cost?
