Nguyen is one of the best professors I had in my first quarter of college! You can tell that she genuinely loves to teach and cares about her students, and she is quirky and fun during lectures. There is a short quiz every week, but they are really easy most of the time and there's a homework assignment for every section (also pretty easy).
She definitely made my first quarter here at college memorable. Definitely one of the best professors there is. She tends to go a bit fast during lecture, but it isn't really hard to keep up with her if you have a decent foundation of (pre) calculus. She genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She makes lectures fun as well.
DR. NGUYEN IS THE BEST MATH INSTRUCTOR I'VE EVER MET. She cares for her students! Homework - quite a lot but it's helpful for you to practice for exams. (2 midterms/final) Weekly quizzes - pretty easy if you do your discussion sheets Lectures - her pace is kinda fast but if you pay attention and visit her OH, you'll be fine Highly recommended!
Professor Nguyen was a fantastic math professor during my first quarter at UC Davis! She was very caring of her students and her lectures were clear and helpful. There were weekly quizzes and a lot of online homework but they were pretty straight forward. Midterms generally similar to study guides. Final was a bit tough, but still a fun class!
If you can choose this professor, but you choose not to, you have probably made one of the worst decisions in your life. I think this is enough to explain my point.
Professor Nguyen is one of the best instructors I've ever had! She cares about cultivating good relationships with her students and genuinely wants to see them succeed. 2 midterms, 1 final, and weekly quizzes (all of which are fair if you do the homework and ask questions). Lectures are very clear and concise. Highly recommend taking her class!
Amazing lectures, and you could tell she really cares about her students. Before class she would walk up and down the aisles chatting, and did her best to learn students names and was very good about communicating with the class. The final was pretty difficult but that was partly because the average was so high for both midterms.
Amazing professor. Take her if you have the chance.
She was an outstanding professor. You must attend lecture because she goes over exactly what she expects on exams. Her two midterms were basically the study guide but the final was HARD. That being said the class was great she is an amazing professor that genuinely cares. She hosts review sessions before all exams.
Best prof- take her if you can. Explains calculus very well. Between her and the WebAssign HW you should do well. Tests are similar to the practice exams and if u do well on the hw and practice tests then u truly understand the material and will do well on the exams. She's also super nice and approachable!!
Very grateful to have had her as my math professor during my first quarter at Davis. She is a professor who very obviously cares about the success of her students and this reflects in her teaching. She assigns a lot of homework, but all of it covers necessary material that shows up in the midterm/final. Exams were doable, but the final was hell.
nguyen is very nice and straightforward. the lectures were amazing because the way she taught flowed and she made sure we understood the material. the midterms were fair but the final was crazy. i wont say its easy because i know people struggled, but i did well because i worked hard. it wasnt bad at all. also, she is always there to help if u need
Cool professor, like a cool aunt teaching math. She uses WebAssign, very clear about topics when she lectures, understandable no matter previous knowledge. First two midterms were simple, straight to the point. Final hit too hard. Going to every lecture is very important, covers topics quickly, but thorough. Very wholesome & I didnt use textbook.
She does a great job explaining calculus every class. I especially appreciate her study guides and exam reviewing sessions! They were both VERY helpful resources. Her humor is always a plus as well (:
Such an amazing prof! She asked my name in class the first day and when I came into office hours two weeks later she remembered who I was! Amazing at answering questions and at getting a room full of (mostly) freshman to put their phones away and focus. Expectations are amazingly clear. Shes funny. She has office hours 3x a week. Tests are fair.
She gives very thorough notes and steps to solve problems but she goes through the material so fast that it makes it difficult to keep up. Lecture heavy. She is condescending towards her students some times making jokes about peoples "math abilities". Nguyen also doesn't curve like most math classes do. was not blown away like others were by her
She explains thoroughly. During the lecture, she makes sure the class is participating and answering her questions although she sometimes repeats things too often. There were 3 midterms and she posts exam reviews for each and solutions as well. The exams were all straightforward with material that we've gone over, so there were no trick questions.
A very unreasonable teacher. The midterm was way too long for the time limit given and as the coronavirus situation unfolded, she was insensitive about the external struggles that students were already going through. I would take any other teacher over her.
She gives fast lectures and explains things pretty well, going step by step each problem. Midterms are not to hard but very easy to lose points since each problem is worth a lot, you miss 3 questions you already have 70/100 which is a C.
She was one of the sweetest people I have ever met! She brought cookies to our midterms as well as our review sessions for our exams. She will go above and beyond to help you out. However, it is VERY important you consistently study for her class and keep with her HW. She also does have weekly quizzes in discussion but they are helpful :)
GREAT LECTURER. Nguyen goes really fast during lectures yet she handwrites everything on the chalkboard. Her class was really difficult but I learned so much knowledge about calculus from her. I highly recommend taking her class if you care about learning rather than obtaining a high grade.
She goes incredibly fast in her lectures, but that might not be her fault, as she has to teach a certain amount of topics in the quarter. She tries to be funny, but most of the time it just comes across as annoying. Challenging subject matter, but her review sheets are quite helpful. I learned lots but I did so because I taught myself, not from her
Dr. Nguyen is one of the best math teachers that I have ever had. Her class was very challenging for me, but it was definitely fair. She goes above and beyond to make sure we understand the material, and she's just so sweet and encouraging. There is a lot of homework and studying required, so you want an easy A, don't take this class.
Too much homework, you have no chance to fully understand what she was talking about at 8 am. Difficult and boring class.
Nguyen is a sweet and caring professor. She is clearly doing what she said at the beginning of class. Spend your time doing her assigned hw and try to do some suggested hw in the book since she once said shes a lazy lady when it comes to writing a test so she just picks some problems from textbook and changes the numbers. Curve is very minimal.
She explains concepts very thoroughly and precisely, I felt like I understood most things when she was teaching it. What I failed to do was textbook problems and review. The midterms and final made up 95% of your grade in the span of 4 tests. The curve is dependent on how the class does, at least in my case there was a huge curve.
Her lectures are super transparent, she repeats ideas from previous chapters relevant to current chapters in case you forget them. It's a shame that we're in quarantine because I would've loved to attend her classes in person.
Definitely a FIVE star, great lecture, and lecture note. Very clear and easy to learn.
Nguyen is an amazing professor who really cares about her students. Overall there is a good amount of HW that greatly helps with understanding. Lectures and notes are to the point. Her exams/Quizzes do have a conceptual portion that is taken directly from her lectures/Notes.
Good Professor that really cares about her students.
Provided both pre-recorded lectures and posted notes. No midterm, had 4 quizzes instead. Open book/note with a 3 hour window. Webwork hw assigned almost every class. Listened to the students and was flexible in terms of the final. Grading on the quizzes was very specific so it was easy to lose points. Wished I took her in person.
Professor Nguyen was amazing to have during this online quarter! She had very neat/clear notes and recorded lectures. There's no MT, but 4 quizzes, 1 every other week, the material was straightforward, but you must do the assigned HW on webwork to fully understand. You can tell she has a passion for teaching, wish it could have been In person!
Her lecture notes are very clear, and she gives a lot of examples, which I think is important for any math class. If you solely rely on her lectures, you don't even need a textbook to get an A in her class. She's super sweet and cares about her students and I'd love to take her class again.
Brief overview: - SUPER neat notes you can follow along with - really cares about students - explains concepts very clearly - we had 4 quizzes that felt like midterms ( quarantine situation) - No book needed since her lectures are clear - SUPER HELPFUL in office hours I want to take another class with Dr. Nguyen! She's a great professor.
This class is difficult no matter who you take it with, but this professor made it a much better experience. She is super fun, the lectures are intensive but that is because she explains EVERYTHING very thoroughly, and well. Pay attention, do the homework, and you'll do well! She emailed our class two quarters later just to say hi and wish us well!
Excellent Lectures but goes incredibly fast. Four quizzes graded strictly as even the tiniest mistakes could make you lose points. The Final is lengthy and could drop your grade dramatically. She was not giving many responses during office hours or emails, just review the lectures as many times as you can, and go to TAs office hours.
Her lectures are great because she explains things very clearly, but she can go too fast at times. She gives homework after every lecture, which I felt was too much and sometimes very tedious and not always helpful. I didn't like her office hours as she isn't very approachable. Final was challenging but there was a slight curve which was nice.
One of the best professors I've had at Davis in my 2 years. She obviously cares about her students, and I wish I got the chance to interact with her more in person (COVID-19). Her lectures are clear, organized, and easy to understand. Some of her quizzes were difficult, but she weighed it out by assigning an easier quiz right after. Decent curve.
She was a really great professor. :) I had her in Fall 2019 so it was her first quarter at Davis. Her lectures were really easy to follow and she explained things so simply! The homework was similar to the quizzes and midterm/final questions, making it so much easier to study for them. She was also very helpful when answering questions.
COVID ED. THANK GOD she made the 40% final open notes! That saved my grade. I don't know if there was a curve or not (if there was it was slight). Biweekly quizzes that were lengthy (supposed to be done in 50 min, but took 3 hrs...) Strict grading criteria, it was her way or the highway. Excellent lectures. Fast paced, but very clear and examples!
She makes lecture really intresting so watching them always made me get intrested more into each and every topic. She does have a lot of homework, but it is all reasonable and they help for her exams. Dr. Nguyen care for her students a lot and is willing to help out each student as long as they ask.
Very good professor. Lectures are pre-recorded and you have 1 week to view them. Assigns homework thats due pretty much every M/W/F. Tests are very fair and she gives a study guide that resembles the test. Very engaging and enthusiastic professor.
Prof. Nguyen, while nice, is relentless. Extensive homework due almost daily, nightmare difficulty practice exams, and bi-weekly "quizzes" that are weighted like midterms. Lectures are difficult to follow since her voice is very harsh and she goes way too fast. Class consists of mostly pretentious freshman who excel at math, so reviews are biased.
Do not take this class if you are an average test taker, easily get test anxiety, or have bad internet. This class is hard as is, and you only have about 40 minutes to do the multi-step problems in each midterm. This quarter was online, and NO, it was not open notes, it was a proctored exam that needed to be scanned and uploaded within exam time.
Professor Nguyen teaches pretty clear lectures and provides detailed notes for students. Assigns homework which takes a while to do but isn't too bad. However, once it comes to tests oh boy. She does provide a fair amount of resources to study from, but with the difficulty and amount of homework she gives it is almost impossible to work on.
This class is reasonably difficult but I found her teaching style very endearing. She explains things in multiple ways to make sure that you're getting it from the beginning. The problems on the homework assigned are closely related to the exams. Sometimes it's hard to do problems just from the lecture; reading the book helps.
Dr. Nguyen herself is kind and lectures are organized. 3 midterm level quizzes. Tests were especially difficult bc of the difficulty of problems in a very short amount of time. There is no time to think or double check, you're just expected to know how to do it quickly. Don't take if you have test anxiety or need time to work through a math problem
People in the class were scared to talk to the prof because shes incredibly unhelpful & rude. I went to office hours a handful of times and all she ever said was to rewatch the lecture instead of explaining the concept differently. The content isnt too hard but Im not a fan of her teaching style. Shes not accommodating AT ALL even during a pandemic
People in class were scared to talk to her because shes condescending & rude. I went to office hours many times & all she said was to rewatch lecture instead of explaining the concept differently. Shes not accommodating at all even during a PANDEMIC. The content isnt hard but Im not a fan of her teaching style. Do yourself a favor take someone else
the best professor i have ever meet. i love her teaching style, she just write all the note on the blackboard instead of computer, which help me to concentrate. the exam wasn't hard, the professor only choose several topic to exam (but i often spend time on the untest topic) she is a nice and helpful person, and helped me to upload exam.
Only forty minutes to complete quizzes with long questions, each worth 15% of your grade. Most don't bother to ask questions because she will just tell you to review the syllabus or rewatch the lecture. Super nice the first day of class and then absolutely crushed a girl that asked a question from the syllabus. It was hard to watch.
Homework 3 times a week online (10+ questions) , you had to watch lectures online for participation credit, and 3 quizzes each worth 15% of grade + final. Quizzes are proctored through zoom, and you have 40 minutes to do them and then scan and upload. She seems nice but she completely murked a student that asked a question she answered before. nope
the most unapproachable professor I've ever come across. Her class was SO unreasonable-gave 3 lectures/3 homework assignments (10 problems each) a week, with a DIFFICULT 40 MINUTE quiz every few weeks that covered 6-7 sections (45% of grade)she tests speed, NOT understanding. ask questions? she'll attack and leave you embarrassed and feeling stupid
Lectures were okay; Dr. Nguyen basically rewrote her notes on the blackboard every time and didn't add much to them, so you could get by without watching them. She has a very sarcastic sense of humor that doesn't translate well in the professor-student dynamic, but she wasn't horrible.
Professor Nguyen was extremely nice on the first day of the meeting that made you think she was a nice professor. However, her lecture notes are pretty confusing and didn't cover all the concept need to be learned. The three quizzes and final which are extremely hard and need to be done within 40 minutes, rather not to take this course
Awful class. EXTREMELY cruel quizzes, and the final was even worse. TA's are ruthless and unhelpful. This is the only class at UCD I felt was actually trying to make me fail. It's "her way or the highway." She grades everything based on HER rubric, partial credit is virtually zero. Nguyen is the worst, most uncompromising professor I have ever had.
MAT21C is a notoriously hard class at UC Davis. She is a pretty reasonable option for this class. Her lectures are pretty clear. While the homework takes a while, you will learn from her homework. She also holds lots of office hours (up to 3 per week). The cons are she does grade lazy on her tests (her way or the highway) and her final was brutal.
Dr. Nguyen is a kind person, but a tough professor. She gives out 3 HWS/week which although are helpful, can be overwhelming. 3 midterms and a final exam that are all extremely difficult to do well within the time frame. If you ask her a question, her response can sometimes come off as rude. She does have very neat and easy to follow notes though.
Very good teacher for basic concepts, any questions you'll have to find the answer yourself or if you have a good T.A., ask them. "Quizzes" are very brutal on your grade, so if you screw up you might be screwed. Final unrepresentative of entire course (focus on last two chapters) but that might be because of COVID and time crunch.
Best math prof I've ever had! I took temple for 21c the prev quarter but had to drop because I didn't understand a thing. She explains everything in detail. Even tho I didn't do math for like 2 quarters, I didn't need to go back and revise cuz she explained basics. She's strict, but cares a lot. Quite hard final, lowered my grade. Amazing overall!
Be prepared to spend time for this classaside from lectures, there's hw for each section and weekly discussion problems but they prepare you well for tests. Notes are also super clear and helpful. Midterms ok if you can do the hw w/o too much difficulty, but the final was definitely tough (covered more material but felt harder than any midterms).
The class wasn't bad, but not the best either. I really enjoyed her helpful and clear lecture notes, but tests were much too fast and grading unreasonably strict. The final was pretty brutal. Her personality was somewhat rude and rubbed me the wrong way, but that could be me interpreting her humor wrong over zoom. Overall not bad for online school.
Dr. Nguyen knows what she is talking about, and I like her strictness... but not for online school. She gives 3 "quizzes" that are each 40 minutes long and worth 45% of your grade. She gives many HW assignments that aren't worth enough in my opinion. I respect her and she is a good professor, but she is not understanding during a pandemic.
Dr. Nguyen gave great lectures, she wrote everything out step by step and explained as she went along. A lot of homework, 3 assignments every week and each would easily take 2 hours to complete but she gave a week to complete it. Quizzes and final were awful, if you bomb one it's nearly impossible to get an A. Much harder than the homework.
Lectures are just her rewriting out notes on her blackboard and reading them out loud. The final, supposedly accumulative, consisted of 80% material that we had just learned and did not get study material for. This is a self-study class.
Her lecture notes were organized and it is an asynchronous class. However, she graded too harshly for the 3 quizzes, which were basically midterms. People thought she was unfair. The average for the quizzes this quarter were D, C, and D. The final was difficult. She was rude to me during office hours, making me feel inferior when I asked Qs.
Dr. Nguyens class was one of the hardest classes I have ever taken. She gave us 3 quizzes basically midterms and was a tough grader. I absolutely hated it. On the final she put everything about what we learned in the last 2 weeks and made it ultra hard I sometimes wonder what she even thinks when shes doing this to us.
Dr. Nguyen is a very caring person, but you better do the work in return. There are multiple chances to complete extra problems and she will give you test to follow up on them. The exams really push you but her instructions are clear so just break down the problems. She is very clear in explanations and if you listen in lecture she tells you all.
Toughest professor I've ever had. 3 homework a week, and heck it only worth about 20% of the grade. SUPER TEST HEAVY, 3 midterms each worth 15% of the final grade, with the 3rd being a week before the final exam. The tests are nothing like the lecture problems and homework. SUPER TOUGH GRADER. I really don't understand how she got 4+ before.
No. Just don't.
Professor Nguyen cares about her students and provides a lot of study material and exam reviews, which are basically the same problems as the actual exam given. There is homework three times a week.
Shes an excellent professor, very structured, organized, & approachable. She cares about her students by always asking if we have questions. Office hours are extremely helpful. Shes very repetitive which was also helpful. The hw is alot harder than the exams, making the exams very fair. The advice I would give is talk. Talk to her during OH&email
Professor Nguyen made this course much harder than it really needed it to be. Doing the homework as well as your participation is not enough to make it in this class and if you fail any of the midterms you can kiss your passing grade goodbye. You need to put 110% of your focus into this course or else you're going to end up failing. Good luck!
I missed the First midterm and panicked since there isn't a remake for it. She made an appointment to instead add the points I missed on my Final instead of receiving a zero. She really is nice and cares for students. When I say she does, she really does with appointments and office hours. The class is well structured and organized.
Great lecturer! Her lectures were structured and easy to follow. Was available when needed, and was very sweet! Wouldn't regret taking the rest of the series with her if I had the choice. Only complaint is that the exam didn't allow calculators and time was an issue, but she didn't have any crazy problems. (just memorize the unit circle)
Nguyen was a decent professor overall. Her ways of teaching are quite good, however when it comes to being personable she slacks. She comes off in a rude way and exams expected WAY more than we were taught -- average test grades reflected this. Not many people even passed this class. I don't think I would ever recommend this class to someone.
doesn't answer emails. condescending in office hours. 3 midterms & a cumulative final. 2 lowest HW dropped. curves at the end. exams are proctored and closed note. she doesn't care to make sure her students are actually understanding the material and doing well. just teaches to teach. would not recommend. least fav professor at davis so far.
To get an A in this class, you HAVE to work for it. No slacking. Pay attention to the lecture videos. She goes into precise detail when explaining the steps of solving each problem. Professor Nguyen will help any student as long as you ask for help. PLEASE ATTEND OFFICE HOURS. It will help you learn the material better. Do the practice problems!!
Nguyen is an amazing lecturer and her class is very organized. However, the homeworks are much more difficult than what is presented in her lectures so I can imagine you can do well if you are good at math but the average student will struggle a lot. Exams are very difficult as well. Take if you have confidence in your math.
The worst professor I have ever had. Her homework questions are way difficult than in lectures. And the tests are tough, and the time is not enough to finish all the questions because all the details matter, so you have to keep writing and have no time to think about whether the method is right or not. The grade is highly dependent on the tests.
I can see why people may think this is a hard class. The test average so far has been around 60%. This class takes a lot of work, so be prepared. She does lecture great and takes time to explain patiently step by step if you are ever confused. Go to office hours and internalize all the content. The majority of the grade is based on 3 MT and 1 Final
Professor Nguyen is the best math professor I've had at UC Davis so far. Is her class difficult? Yes. However, she does her best to make sure you have a good understanding of the material before an exam. Make sure to go to OH and ask questions! The class is test heavy, but if you put in the time and work, you'll do fine.
Dr. Nguyen is the best math professor I've had so far. Her class is tough but it is well structured and gives you many practice problems with solutions. She also holds multiple OH every week so you have ample opportunities to come for help, plus she is very approachable and clearly cares about her students. She even wished me a happy birthday!
Overall, shes an amazing professor. She gives you everything you need to succeed, but in turn you need to put in many hours. At first I wasnt doing well, so I met with her and I really changed my studying habits and had a huge improvement in the class. She really does care for her students, but its a very difficult class and tough grading
Professor Nguyen is an amazing lecturer and explains the concepts really well. Her class is also really organized. Her exams, however, are really difficult and unreasonable within the time constraint, and she gives very frequent hw(3 times a week).
I felt that I was able to learn a lot from this class as the lectures were very clear and well-paced. However, I found the exams to be very stressful as there were many specific protocols we had to follow. We were given a lot of time to complete the homework, although it was at times irrelevant to material on the exams. Generous class curve.
This class was hard, regardless of the professor. She puts in a lot of effort in her lectures and provides clear lecture notes which were very helpful for the homework. The exams reflected the lectures and homework. There was a lot of homework, but I feel like it helped. The homework and discussion ws were harder than the exam so it helped to study
Very fair professor, probably the best one you can take for what is an insanely hard class. ATTEND EVERY LECTURE, FINISH HOMEWORK EARLY, GET HELP FROM TA'S, GO TO HER PROBLEM SOLVING SESSIONS. The resources are all there to succeed, but it's hard to keep up with the breakneck curriculum. Averages on exams were sub-60%.
Although the material in the class was difficult, Professor Nguyen was great at explaining the content and had very clear and organized lectures. Her exams, while fair, were difficult (the final was also very hard). Despite this and the (sometimes) overwhelming homework, she was very accommodating (just reach out to her!) and was very friendly.
Professor Nguyen is AWESOME. However, her class is difficult. You need to put in work to get the grade you want in this class. Her lectures are really helpful, and she tries her best to explain all the concepts clearly, especially in her OH. The tests are worth a LOT, but she gives you ample practice through discussion worksheets. Master those!
Great professors overall. Class notes are quite clear and lectures are required to watch. 3 exmas +1 final, and practice exams are really helpful for exams. She checks every steps and you will lose points if you skip a tiny step during the exam.
One of my favorite teachers. Made class fun and calculus easy to understand. Hw was manageable.
