This is a non-major chem class, but she teaches it as though it's organic chem. Her exams are ridiculous; she doesn't give study guides. There's so much info given for each chapter, but only a small fraction of that info gets covered on the exams, so you waste time studying over half of the material. She assigns pointless case studies as well.

I took this course during summer thru-session. Our class was very small - only 11 students - versus the usual 70-100 student lectures in a regular semester. We were able to ask a lot of questions and she was great at answering them. Very nice. Very easy. She created her own exams, & Posted PPT notes on elc after each chapter. Recommend for summer

The material for CHEM1110 can be easy as long as you read the book and study the material. I had a basic knowledge of Chemistry from high school and all I had to really study was the recycling material. Go to her office hours with specific questions because the final exam is cumulative. She held a very helpful study session before each test.

Even though labs are taught by TA's, Norton still oversees the rubrics and writes the lab manuals, which are annoying and confusing, not to mention full of mistakes. Also, when taking the timed lab quizzes online, you can't go back and fix your answers even if you have time left, and to see what you did wrong on the quiz you have to go talk to her.

You have to buy an expensive lab manual for the class, but a lot of the labs aren't even in there. The class is graded mostly on the labs, and a smaller percentage on quizzes. Your experience in this class is completely dependent on your TA. The quizzes are only like 6 questions and you only get a few minutes to complete it, so they're easy to fail. The lab practical was awful and I was just lucky to have a good quiz and lab report average but I know several students that dropped a whole letter grade because of it.

Dr. Norton is the epitome of why the chemistry department is absolutely terrible. There are gems in the department, but she certainly is a large part of why the chemistry department gets a terrible reputation. She has no empathy or respect for her students; the only reason this class isn't rated worse is because the TAs are able to help out.

Unfortunately, you cannot avoid her if you need to take gen chem labs. Her quizzes have gotten a little easier, but they are still unreasonably difficult. Your experience in lab will almost entirely depend on your TA, but Dr. Norton writes the quizzes and practical, so she will still impact your grade. The lab itself is chill, but she is not.

The labs themselves are not that bad, but this is determine by which TA you will get. The quizzes are terrible, and they will drop your grade down. The labs themselves don't match what you are learning in lecture.

Would take again

Class is dependent on your group and TA. I often felt very lost and confused on what I was doing/ supposed to be learning. Not much is explained and is mostly independent work.
