Very nice professor. Just do the textbook work she assigns(on top of the WebAssign) and pay attention in class, and you'll do well in the class.
Tough, but that's chemistry. You can tell she's really passionate about the subject and always willing to help. Make sure you do the assigned book work. She sometimes moves too fast and its very easy to fall behind. TESTS ARE HARD!
Feldwinn is really nice, but her tests are challenging! Don't only do webassign for the credit, understand what is going on cause some of the problems on the test are straight from it. Also look at the examples in the book!! Overall amazing professor :)
her voice is really annoying. did not like her at all. made me drop chem! i went to office hours often and each time i went she didn't help much at all. i felt doomed because i was having a hard time in her class. take CLAS.
great professor. really cares about getting concepts across. very approachable and helpful in office hours. tests are hard, but fair.
Great teacher!! lectures are pretty fast pace so make sure to review the concepts before hand. All material she uses is provided online so it extremely helpful! It is definitely not an easy A class, you have to put the work and time but other than that Professor Feldwinn is a great professor who is passionate about chemistry and cares deeply about
Feldwie is chalky as hell....
Doesn't teach, all my learning has come from either my chemistry lab or things I taught myself, because she doesn't do anything. Also, she makes more mistakes in class than I make in an average day, its just an awful waste of my time
Obviously the person that posted the last 4 posts and pretended to be different people didn't do well on the last midterm. Feldwinn is hard but fair.
Feldwinn is a very helpfull professor if you actually do the work. She is fair, and for the most part very clear in lecture. She does tend to make mistakes, but always fixes them. It is also clear that she wants to help the students.
Feldwinn is helpful if you ask for the help. You have to put effort into the class and if you need help ask for it! Be sure to do book problems they come up a lot on tests.
This prude woman is sharp. But she is so eager to teach that she forgets all the material!! That's no good. And don't expect to hear her because her notes will be pressed up against her face, sadly to no beneficial effect. She makes many mistakes every class and seems to lack sometimes even a basic understanding of the material she tries to teach
Obviously the haters didn't open their textbooks all quarter. Her lectures are designed to clarify the confusing material in the book rather than replace the book. You can't expect to learn chemistry by just sitting in lectures for 3 hours a week. If you use her lectures in conjunction with the book, you'll find she is an excellent teacher.
She has a very clear teaching style, and many opertunities to raise your grade such as substituting pre chap assesments for lowest hw, and iclicker points for lowest midterm. She is willing to do all she can to help a student so long as they make the effort to get help. She is not the easiest grader, but she is a great teacher to make up for it.
Professor Feldwinn is very helpful. She understands that chemistry is hard and uses that knowledge to help others grasp chemistry better. CHEM 1B is the hardest of all of the chemistry series and she made it seem not as bad and harsh as I thought it was going to be. Those formulas help but listen to how she uses them.
Very passionate about chem and good at what she does, but way too hard of a grader! Failed both midterms and final! Only take this class if you are very proficient in chem and you are a science major looking to go on in the chem series. DO NOT take if you are not good at chem or only have to take 1A! Take someone who passes everyone like Hooker.
A very good teacher, and an extremely hard tester. You can do well, just make sure you are diligent and put in your study time.
Do have to do practice problems!! She teaches clearly but like most college professors she teaches the basics then you have to learn how to apply them. She gives lots of opportunities to improve your grade so take advantage of them!! She even give extra credit sometimes.
Ive had her for both chem 1a and 1b and plan on taking her for 1c as well. Her tests are really hard but she is an excellent teacher and she curves and gives extra credit, so it all evens out in the end. She is fair and super helpful and I would definitely recommend taking her class! This is coming from someone who hated chemistry in highschool.
Hardest chem teacher ever. Had **** for 1A and breezed through without ever attending lecture. Feldwinn's test are hard and I failed both midterms before the curve, although she did have a rather large curve. First failed midterms in my college career :( If possible, take someone else
Decent teacher but i had better professors for chem 1b and 1c this year. Meh okay professor
She is very enthusiastic and approachable. Must attend lecture and do the book work (it really will help you on the tests). Only complaint is that when she wrote on the board she would make a lot of mistakes and it was very difficult to keep up.
She is very enthusiastic and passionate about what she teaches. I think she does a fine job teaching and explaining the material with clarity. Like everyone else has said, her midterms and finals are very tough. But I love her as a professor, and she is helpful when you need it. Plus, she has a lot of real world examples that help clarify concepts.
Her tests are unfairly hard. If you don't do the book problems, you're screwed. My class average on the first midterm was a 54%. That's saying something. If you can get any other professor for Chemistry, I would strongly recommend it. And it doesn't help that her class is at 8AM. Such a pain.
Unfairly hard and a big disadvantage to have as a professor. She is a very nice lady, but her tests tend to make you hate her. Unless you like a challenging course, do NOT take her class.
Nice person but not recommended. You must do the optional book problems on top of the hours of required online homework. Her tests are not easy
She is very enthusiastic teach and gives some extra credit but her finals are extremely hard. The average on the finals are usually in the 50s. It is a disadvantage to take her class because the other chem teachers are significantly easier (I looked at the other classes midterms to compare).
great professor, but extremely hard midterms, but you learn a lot and you it gets you into chemistry. very enthusiastic professor that knows her stuff.
not a good teacher, difficulty of problems she does examples for versus problems she tests does not scale right and she is a freaking hard grader; one of my answers was right but she nitpicked about one of the steps...
Great teacher, very enthusiastic and interesting. Her test are very difficult and the averages are low, but she curves the class. She has her power points online, but often times she teaches important things not covered in the power points in class. Also, do the "suggested" book problems, they reappear on tests.
Easy class, but watch out for the hard tests. Nice professor and easy class materials, but she lacks the ability to explain clearly. Overall not bad.
She's very enthusiastic about chemistry, even at 8am. But the class is hard! Make sure to go to lecture (iclicker points!) and go to office hours. Do the assigned hw problems, they usually appear on the test. Read the book before class and if she says memorize something, do it. She's great, can tell she loves teaching.
She's a nice person, but the class is very difficult. Try to take other professors if you're not a master in chemistry already. People who got A's are the ones who took AP Chem and aced it, or simply know everything about the subject. If you are a normal person with an average IQ, DON'T take her class! Take it if you were a genius.
HARD TESTS. Quizzes are pretty simple though. If you took AP Chem you should be fine, but if you were like me and had it sophomore year, it'll be tough. Go to CLAS! It really helps. Go to lectures, too. iClicker points help make up a few points.
Avoid if possible. Very hard tests. An A is possible if you do the readings, book problems, and are naturally good at chemistry. The book problems WILL show up on tests so do them.
Very Enthusiastic Teacher, makes sitting through an 8am so much easier. The homework assigned and quizzes aren't too difficult, although the tests are challenging. The problems on the tests will be of a higher caliber than those done in class, so doing book problems is a must.
This class is a lot of work! If you're major involves anything with Chemistry, I suggest you take her, she'll have you go through every little detail. Other Chem professors are extremely easy, Anderson's and Petra;s tests are so much easier than Feldwinn's. This class carries the workload of two courses: Aleks being one and Chem Lecture, the other.
Not as difficult as everyone says. Just keep up with the book problems (do like 1 or 2 of the difficult problems a day) and you'll do great. Also, if you attend her review sessions, the midterms and finals become significantly easier. You also get a better understanding of material!
Definitely not the easiest Chem professor out of the others. Her midterms and finals are all short answer while the other professors give multiple choice ones. The tests are not curved, but the entire class' grade is. Appears to be helpful, cares about the subject. Do book problems as they do tend to appear on tests. Good luck with this professor.
Really good professor. Kept me awake even though it was 8 a.m. Her notes were pretty clear and she was always genuinely concerned for student's understanding of topics. Her tests are sort of too long to be able to finish in time so expect some problems left blank. Do ones you know first. Study book and practice tests, most problems will be on test.
Horrible test maker. I understood most of the material up until the last two chapters and the final ended up being those chapters I didn't know. Seriously, her tests are unforgiving at best. A lot of free response and she expects you to study all the time for the class. There's extra credit opportunities, but it's not worth it. Switch out. Now.
had for all three quarters of gen. chem. best. professor. ever. she's a little hard but if you study like you're supposed to then its not that bad. tests are somewhat difficult but if you know the stuff then you should be fine. she is extremely helpful during office hours and very friendly overall and cares very much about her students. TAKE HER!
I had her for 1A and 1C and overall I think she is a great professor but she definitely makes the class more difficult than all the other professors. Other professors give strictly MC exams but her's are 2/3 free response 1/3 MC so you really need to understand the material. She does curve the class though, so it's not difficult to get a good grade
Super helpful! And not that difficult, her tests are literally the same questions with same numbers as from the book. Got an A- in her class and I slack pretty hard
the average for the first midterm was 43%. She is a terrible teacher. The average partially reflects her teaching skills.
Professor Feldwinn is a hard teacher, there is no doubt you will have to work much more in her class. However, if you are a hard worker you should be thrilled to have her. She is a great teacher and extremely helpful. Her exam style is not multiple choice which prepares you much more for upper division classes.
Much harder than every other gen chem class at UCSB.
She is probably the hardest gen chem professor but shes definitely the best. I learned a lot and put way more effort than i ever expected to put into chem. She curves the class as a whole so go to CLAS and test reviews and pray you get above the class average. 2/3 FRQs and 1/3 MC tests.
If she didn't have her lectures at 8 am I definitely would have chosen her class every quarter of chem. The free response a bit intimidating at first but a fair amount of partial credit is given.Overall great professor and fair grading system.
She is challenging, but if you put the work into it,you will pass. Her tests are really long, and difficult but, the class average is really low, so the grading curve is pretty fair. Do every extra credit opportunity and pre chapter assessments, they are easy points. She is very willing to help, I reccomend office hours.
Dr. Feldwinn was BY FAR the best gen chem teacher I had. You can really tell she loves to teach and wants her students to get excited to learn chemistry. Her exams are difficult but she never tests on things she didn't go over in class. If you review her slides and practice exams, you'll get at least a B.
She is the worst chem teacher ever! If you have any interest in becoming a bio major do NOT take her class! It is extremely hard to pass no matter how much you study.
Simply put, bad professor for a beginner. If you don't already know a lot about chemistry or lack a strong foundation prepare to work overtime. The class is very difficult because the professor expects you to know so much from high school. She does bad examples in class because she skips steps and assumes you know how. I'd avoid her if possible.
Class was really hard. Studied a lot and ended up getting an A-.Avoid if you're a beginner in chem. My advice would be : Go to every lecture, do all extra credits opportunities, register for CLAS, do book problems,do practice exams and write down all the questions you got wrong and go over them again before the test.
I came into her class not knowing any Chemistry (I slacked off in high school Chemistry), but I still managed to get an A. I actually understand Chemistry after taking her class. She is an amazing and super helpful teacher, but you still have to put in 100% effort. Best teacher ever!
Dr. Feldwinn was very helpful during her office hours. She really seemed to care about her students, however her tests were extremely challenging. Come to class early on test days so you get more time to finish, and for the love of God, do your book problems!!!
Hardest teacher ever. Avoid her as a teacher. Made my first quarter as a freshmen the most stressful time ever. Extremely hard.
Very hard teach avoid if possible. Makes tests hard for no reason, and the partial credit from the free response seems to make you loose more points than gain. Averages on exams for chem 1b were 52% and 61% this should speak for its self.
Feldwinn seems to really care about her students, but can get irritated when they don't pay attention. Her tests are very hard–the averages are typically in the 50 or 60 per cent range. She does a lot of practice problems in class, but spends less time on conceptual understanding. She is nice and will answer questions well.
Feldwinn is the hardest chem teacher you will ever have, but she will work your butt until you're a chem master. I loved her teaching/lectures. Her tests are free-response, but a lot of partial credit is given. Didn't do well in her class because I slacked off, but do book problems, take GOOD notes (write down her examples) & you're good to go!
This is not an easy class, you have to work. Do the book problems and other class examples, such as iclicker and before class questions, for homework. Then work on those problems you struggled with, and focus on those when you study, until you master them. The curve will not be too steep this class, so you better make sure to get a good percentage.
Studied super hard for each exam, and got Ds on all of them. I did every single book problem, but the short answer problems on her tests are much more difficult and she is very stingy with giving points for them. I do have to say that even though I got Ds, the averages were so bad that I ended up with a C+ with the curve.
HARD class! Feldwin talks extremely fast in class and often skips steps on the board. She wastes time doing experiments and Iclicker questions when she could be lecturing.
I learned a lot from her. She is really good about helping students if you have questions. The midterms are free response so you can get partial credit. A lot of what is on the midterms is things you've already seen on the practice midterms and questions form class. She offers extra credit. Tests are tough but you will learn a lot
Dr. Feldwinn provides a great learning atmosphere that originates from her passion and zeal for educating students about general chemistry. She is very accessible during office hours and she is willing to meet outside of office hours as well. She makes sure you understand the material and is patient when working with you.
Really good at explaining stuff!
She explains topics thoroughly. You HAVE to go to class in order to do well. She posts slides, but the examples of problems that she writes on the boards are crucial. They will not be on the slides. About 40% of the midterm final problems are ones you've seen before (from slides, board examples, ALEKS, book problems).
Feldwinn is obviously passionate about chemistry and teaching. She does experiments in class that are useful for more visual learners to demonstrate topics covered in class. Do the book problems! They're usually a large portion of the test.
It's a hard class, but if you do all of the book problems and work really hard its easy to do well. She's there for you and structures the class so that comprehension and hard work lead to good grades. But, if chemistry is not your strong suit, prepare to work very very hard.
She was really a good professor. But homework, quiz and exam, hmm, that's a different story...
Unbelievably hard. Don't take her unless you are an aspiring chemist or scientist that frequently uses chemistry. Otherwise, if you are just taking the class as a prerequisite for your major, PICK SOMEONE ELSE FOR THE LIFE OF YOUR GPA!
I hated chemistry before this class, but I really like it now. She is very clear in her explanations, and she uses bookhw probs on her tests. If you pay attention in lecture, do the homework, and do the book problems, it is easy to get an A or at least a high B in the class.
Hardest Chem 1A professor out there. If Chem is your only real class of the quarter, and you have enough time to devote to doing book problems and lots of studying, you'll be fine, but if you're taking this with 3 other challenging classes - get a different professor. She's really good at teaching when you go to her office hours, but her lectures..
Her class is really hard. Luckily, she is really helpful at her office hours and there is a good chance you'll pass if you attend them. I had a C- then before the final went in every time i had a question and raised my grade to an A-.
If Feldwinn is your only choice for Chem 1A then may the lord have mercy on your grade. She is not necessarily a bad teacher, it's just that for an introductory general chemistry class she makes it really hard on the students.
If you're a freshman, do not take 8AM with Feldwinn. I repeat, DO NOT TAKE 8AM WITH FELDWINN. You will fall asleep. You will not pay attention. She seems easy at first, but just you wait as the quarter wraps up. She's energetic but not clear and moves on very quickly. Take Chemistry with another professor. TRUST ME.
Her lectures are moderately clear and her pace is fast. She has iclicker questions, with 1 being given before each lecture; some appear on her midterms. Her tests are both free response and MC; they are difficult, but the class is curved. She is always willing to help, either with midterm questions or concepts.
Feldwinn is a great teacher. She tries to explain things clearly. However, tests are tough. If you want to have good grade, you must do a lot of book problems and actually attend lecture. Iclicker points isnt worth anything by itself, but it replaces ur lowest quiz grade. I was struggling the entire quarter, but her curves are generous.
If you are not a morning person and you know it, do not take this class. you might think you can do it but in reality it will affect your grade if you don't show up or stay awake during lecture. this is the first class i failed in my whole life, if you have the choice choose any other professor DO IT. DO NOT RISK your grade taking this class.
Feldwinn's probably the most straightforward out of all the general chemistry professors. Tests are hard but there are very few trick questions: it's all about practicing and making sure you know what you're doing. She gives out small amounts of extra credit, but her focus is on making sure YOU get the material (solubility song :D). Great lectures!
She's just so annoying and makes things way harder than they needed to be.
Prof. Feldwinn is the best professor I've had so far. Her lectures are very clear and helpful. Tests aren't easy, and you DO have to work hard. Tests are consisted of free responses and multiple choices. Attending lecture and doing the assigned book problems is the key to acing the exam! She also curves the class and gives a lot of extra credits.
She explains the material very clearly. It's also very helpful to go to her office hours. Chem1B is harder than her Chem1A class. If you keep up with the reading, work the book problems, and attend lectures, getting an A in her class is doable. She drops one of the lowest quiz grade, and also replaces one midterm with final.
Feldwinn is one of the best instructors. Even though she is very challenging and difficult, she makes confusing information crystal clear! Go to office hours! She is extremely helpful and wants her students to succeed.
Good overall professor, you're forced to learn the material. Her class is much more extensive than the other two or three chem profs, from what I've heard. Tons of homework. That's a good thing in terms of absorbing the material, but bad for your grade. Her tests are very tough, and she throws a few tricks in there. I wouldn't take again.
Feldwinn is despised by many because she gives free response and short answer tests - the other professors are all multiple choice. She is the most difficult chem 1 professor. That said, her lectures are engaging and she is very good at explaining confusing concepts. She is an excellent teacher, but she is challenging.
She really cares and loves what she's doing,. That why her lectures were so interesting. Very passionate teacher.
If you can get Kunkel or Price for Chem instead of Feldwinn I would highly recommend it! Tests are hard and she is not very understanding. Gives iclicker "pre-class" questions at 8am exactly so you have to show up at least 5-10mins early to do them even though class hasn't started.
Darby Feldwinn is a pretty okay professor. However, she prides herself on having difficult tests. Even her quizzes have redundant trick questions that seem to be testing your command over the English language rather than your command over chemistry topics.
She is my favorite chemistry professor, she cares about her students and loves what she doing. If you do not want to put so much effort on chemistry or just take it as a major prerequisite. Do not take her class! The exams will have massive calculation and limited time!
Green Works was my favorite class I'd taken at UCSB. Lots of activities, labs, and work given outside of class (Earth day, Ecotopia paper). You'll learn the science behind green tech (wind turbines, car batteries, circuitry, PVs, lighting, green buildings). Darby is an intensive grader, but she does curve the class. Having a 20 person class is fun
Lectures unclear. Even after multiple questions, still confused. Feldwinn is available to students and seems like a nice person; I just had a touch time in the class. Every question is a trick question.
Darby is honestly my favorite professor at UCSB. She is very caring and really wants her students to succeed. Her tests are very straightforward if you take the time to do the book problems and learn the material. I am so happy I took her class and would take any class with her in the future.
I signed up randomly for Feldwinn during orientation and am happy I did. She makes the content interesting and tries to help her students succeed. Her tests are majority free response which is difficult but forces you to learn the material. Make sure you do the book problems! They are so helpful!
Chem 1B is harder than 1A but Professor Feldwinn explains the material well. Go to office hours if you have questions. She will try her hardest to make concepts understandable. Do the book problems because her test questions are very similar to them. She is the sweetest professor and really cares about her students!
Feldwinn made chemistry so interesting and understandable. her lectures are a little fast paced so use CLAS if necessary. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. she really wants to get to know her students and is very approachable. she explains the concepts in different ways until you grasp it. love love love Feldwinn
I LOVE DR FELDWINN!! She really keeps me awake at 8 am. I really am not a morning person, but Feldwinn manages to make chemistry interesting and fun. Throughout high school, I hated chem, but Feldwinn's love and passion for chemistry are very evident in her teaching, which has rubbed off on me. Yes, I study my butt off for quizzes and tests, and they're pretty hard, and yes I take CLAS, but I've learned so much from her and am doing well in the class. I highly recommend Professor Feldwinn, don't be scared off by the fact that it's an 8 am or the fact that her tests are challenging. If you put in sufficient work, you'll learn a lot from this wonderful professor.
If you are not into science nor mathematics then don't get into chemistry. She's a really peppy teacher so her 8am class isn't dreadful. She is challenging and this class took up most of my time from my other classes. I had difficulty in this class so if you're committed, you'll be fine, but if not then don't. ALEKS was a pain in the butt though.
Dr. Feldwinn is really a pleasure to have in the mornings- any other professor would have half the class sleeping at 8am. Her tests are like 85% written which I love, but others hate-it depends on YOU. Her lectures sometimes can be confusing and her explanations backwards and unnecessary, so GO TO CLAS. DO BOOK PROBLEMS. THEY WILL SAVE YOUR GRADE.
Feldwinn is extremely preppy @ 8 am, but her class is very difficult. She's the only prof who has 3 quizzes instead of 2 and the only prof that has free response tests -everyone else has multiple choice exams. Class averages are low. Sign up for CLAS, and do recommended book problems. She makes you work hard just to pass, choose wisely.
Darby was the nicest chem teacher I've had at UCSB, but she was the hardest to follow. She's a good person but not a very good teacher.
She has a lot of energy when she teaches with is really helpful particularly when you are taking the class at 8AM. She also gives her students lots of different options for how to study (book problems w answers, practice tests, overheads, etc.) which I found very helpful. Tests contain both multiple choice and short answer. Go to CLAS.
She teaches the class very enthusiastically and logically so you will never get bored during the lecture. The content is not easy but definitely not hard, attend the lecture and you will get an A for sure. Great teacher.
If you can take this class with ANY other professor, DO IT. Feldwinn teaches and tests you on difficult concepts that are clearly not required because NO OTHER TEACHER TEACHES THEM. 100% would recommend taking the whole chem series with Price. Feldwinn made me absolutely hate chemistry. Now that I have a different teacher chem is at least bearable.
Dr feldwinn is a very good teacher, but do not take this class if you are not smart. Her test is the most difficult one, because there is 70 percent of free responses in the test, whereas the rest of others' tests have 0 percent. But if you are a PRE-MED student or biology student who wants to be in track with your upper division classes, do it.
She teaches well. She gives pre-chapter sort of quizzes that don't get graded by how much you have correct but by participation. Do the book problems, the practice quizzes/exams, ALEKS and you should be fine. Go to her office hours for questions and do CLAS or ACE. CLAS is very helpful.
The lecture are really detailed and super fast!! She expects you to know most of the material before you come to class, so if you do your HW and read the book ( which takes a lot of time ) you'll be fine but other wise its difficult! her midterms are the hardest out of all the other chem 1A professor! She nice but her class is difficult.
Midterm and final reviews were nothing like the actual thing and midterm and final were unnecessarily hard. Gives three quizzes, 2 midterms and a final. Talks too much and goes too fast at times during the lectures. I recommend other professors.
the class is very hard if you didnt really try.
I love Darby! She is so dedicated, and she truly cares about you passing. She gives you so many opportunties to contact her. ALEKS is a lot, but is really helpful. I loved her class so much that I am taking her again for 1B. Do your book problems! She pulls exact questions from the book for tests!
Some may say Feldwinn's tests are hard, but I believe if you really pay attention to her lectures from beginnings to ends and understand what she's talking about, tests are not that bad. You get to learn a ton from this professor because her pace is fast and she covers some topics that other professors don't. LOTS OF EXTRA CREDITS!!
She is a great professor but if you have no backround in chemistrty take a different professor. She is really sweet and helpful but extremely fast paced. She gives more quizzes than the other professors and her midterms and finals are a majority write in answers instead of multiple choice.
She assumes that everyone is a master in the subject of chemistry. I went to office hours and she made me feel dumb. She favors students that know chem well not because of her but because of their own knowledge/background of it. Her lectures are very fast paced and explains everything more complicated than it actually is. Doesn't take the time 2 ex
Best out of all the Chem1 professors at UCSB. She takes time to make sure class understands material and offers extra credit each quarter. Do the book problems (especially end of chapter) and you will pass with flying colors!! She is the only chem teacher to give partial credit on tests. Wake yourself up for this 8am!
I had Professor Feldwinn for both Chem 1A and Chem 1B. I really enjoyed her teaching style. She expects a lot out of you, but I think that was beneficial to my learning. She is really great about answering any questions, and she makes herself very available to help you. I suggest office hours. I HIGHLY suggest doing book problems and your ALEKS!
Feldwinn is one of the best professor that I have met in UCSB. She is very enthusiastic and always encourage you to ask question. The tests are hard but more than half of them come from past quizzes, Aleks and book problems. Office hour is also quite helpful.
She is an amazing person, can tell she does care. Not so great of professor. Very intelligent and goes very fast. If you are amazing at Chemistry you will love her. If you struggled like me take someone else. She doesn't slow down lectures for anyone or anything. Very hard grader and tests are extremely difficult.
She's a great person overall, but she lectures like the world is gonna end the very next second. She will pause to quickly ask if anyone has a question but everyone is either too busy taking notes to respond or is still comprehending what she just said. By the time that you formulated your questions, she has already zipped on to the next topic.....
Professor Feldwinn's class is worth waking up for the 8am. She is very clear about her expectations and quizzes and midterms aren't surprising. If you do the book problems and get help if you're confused you will do well.
Dr. Feldwinn is the only chemistry professor that has short answer on her exams and decides to put about 2 challenge problems on there that are worth 15 points each so if you don't know how to do it, you are pretty much done for. Normally around 6 multiple choice questions worth 5 points each which is also ridiculous. Take class as a last resort.
Despite some serious effort to study constantly, show up to every class, and do extra credit, I couldn't seem to do well. She taught material through the end of the quarter with not a lot of time to take in the material and study for finals. Unless you go in as a chem guru, don't take her class! The hardest of all professors in the subject!
Feldwinn was one of my favorite professors this quarter. She's super easy to talk to during office hours and her exams are fair, even with FRQs. I only got a C+ because I missed 1/3 of her lectures because I couldn't wake up and I didn't put as much work into the class as I should've, but I would take her again if she was offered at a later time.
I really liked Feldwinn! She only teaches 8AM lecture, but I'm a morning person so it really worked out for me. She is full of energy and you never fall asleep even though it's so early. Her explanations are very thorough and she's always eager to help, although it might be a little fast for people with no background in chemistry.
Took her for chem 1a, she makes her own exams and does not use the universities and has these challenge problems which are two hard problems worth anywhere from 30-50% of your exam.
Honestly, I have nothing to say. She was absolutely horrible. Please save your own life and make sure you don't sign up for her class. Please. I beg of you. Save yourself. You'll thank me later. Get ANY other chemistry teacher and you should be fine.
Not a good teacher unless you already know what youre doing. She goes into the proods and math behind formulas we use which isn't nescessary knowledge. Her tests are considerably difficult compared to every other chem teacher as well as her focusing on/adding material no one else has to learb. You can survive, but its unnecessary to put yourself
I took Feldwinn for Chem 1A/Chem 1B and loved her! Go to office hours bc she is very nice, approachable & helpful & chem is difficult no matter what. Her tests are free response but I personally loved it because she gives partial credit. Go to CLAS and do book problems. Half of test questions come from book problems, ALEKS, or lecture questions.
An energetic and respected professor. It is my pleasure to have her to give lectures at 8AM. The grading criteria is very clear so it is easy to track on your process. However, her lecture is all about how to do problems rather than giving comprehensions about the science of Chemistry, it makes me feel like I am having a high school Chemistry class
Honestly, I read her reviews before taking her,,, however people were not wrong when they said she was a nice person BUT failed to mention how her lectures are way too fast and sometimes make no sense. Overall, her tests are the hardest ones out of any chem professor... make sure to know what you are getting yourself into
I should have read the reviews prior to taking her course. Expect to get very lost in her class unless you're completely comfortable with Chem. If you're looking to pick up anything from her fast lectures, make sure to seek help outside of class.
overall feldwin is a good professor and is really passionate about chem. she clearly understands the material. her midterms are free response which sucks if your not a good test taker. she has a before class iclicker question so you need to be early to class in order to do it. her iclicker/in-class examples pop up on tests a lot
Tough grader, class averages are very low and she says she curves but it's practically no curve, read the textbook, don't do aleks for studying, only do it for the required homework, have to go to class for iclicker participation points
Her lecture is compact but easy to follow. The exams are more difficult than in-class practices and homework, but even you did terrible in one midterm you still get a chance to compensate by doing better in the final. i really appreciate her personality. She is truly willing to answer your questions and her 8-AM lecture helps people wake up.
I had Feldwinn for chem 1A, B and C. I liked how tests were short answer and multiple choice because of partial credit. The tests were usually straight forward, questions taken straight from Aleks, iclickers or the book problems. But sometimes she would excessively go over unnecessary material or try to fit in 3 concepts during the last 5 minutes.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE. I did all the book problems, aleks problems, 2 of her practice exams. I didnt expect those question on the exam bc I never seen them before, not in book/aleks/practice exam. I reviewed everything I got but I DIDNT EXPECT THE HUGE DIFFERENCE IN P.E and R.E. If u didnt take AP chem before dont take this course.
She is very enthusiastic for an 8 a.m. and I love that about her. She's really passionate about chemistry and will help you with any problems you're having as long as you communicate with her. She is an amazing lecturer and really helps you understand the material, but only if you do whats assigned and pay attention.
Dr. Feldwinn certainly is a nice person. That said, her consistent mismanagement of time, often comically incoherent lectures, and general failings as a teacher render this class a L. If you can avoid Feldwinn, do so. If you have already taken AP Chemistry, you will probably be fine. If the material's new to you, know it seems to be new to her too.
Feldwinn's class is solid and tough if you want to learn new knowledge. Her tests are the hardest (only one to contain short answers). For a CHEM or BIO major, this might be the right choice if you are a tough learner. But for my major, it was not worth the time and effort. She has a good pace in teaching and is very kind to students.
She's a hard teacher and tough grader, but she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. As long as you are willing to put in the work, you will get a good grade. Do the practice problems and all of the practice tests and you'll be fine. She's a really good teacher and really helpful if you have questions.
Everyone says that she is the most difficult chem professor at UCSB--they are right. While very nice (which explains her 3.5 rating on here) her tests include free response questions that are usually worth about half your grade. Her lectures are really hard to follow and the practice exams don't suffice when it comes to the free response question.
Went into the final with a 99% and wrote scribbles on the side of the scantron so she failed my final. My grade was so high that I still ended with a B. She can't teach for her life and all she does to "teach" is read off of her powerpoints that can be found online. She is an awful teacher and is extremely unfair. DROP her class ASAP
She always explains the concept in detail but the progress of lectures is much slower than other profs. She gives additional contents which is good for those chem major students, but hard to understand for others. You have to do a lot of homework in her class, and she is the only prof whose tests include free responses questions.
Only take Feldwinn if you want to teach yourself chemistry. The only people in my class that knew what was going on in lecture were people that had already taken AP chem in high school. She is incredibly bad at explaining things. Her tests are harder and she gives more homework than any other professors. She's nice, but not a teacher.
Took this class during my first quarter of college. You basically have no hope unless you've already taken AP chem. Couldn't tell you what she was talking about in 75% of the lectures, speaks quickly and in a very confusing manner. This class made me reconsider my entire existence, not to mention my major. The fact that I passed is a miracle.
JUST DONT. will not understand a word she said if you didn't take ap chem.
She goes pretty quick during lecture so it gets pretty difficult to keep up but she explains things well when asked for help. You will get a good grade in the class if you know how to answer the book problems. It is impossible to do them all but the more you do, the better your grade will be. It helps a lot to do the reading before lecture.
Nice and interesting professor. Her lecture is clear and she is helpful outside class. Exams are graded strictly, which include free-response questions, but there are lots of extra credits so you'll be fine.
Shes an awesome professor! Most people complain and they say her class is too hard, especially since shes the only gen chem professor with free response tests. However, she gives partial credit and a lot of extra credit opportunities. She is super straightforward. Do the book problems and you will be more than fine!
The lectures were solid and explanations were clear, but this is coming from someone who already had background knowledge in chem so the course was basically a review for me. She is the only professor who teaches this course that does free response questions rather than multiple choice.
Very sweet and energetic! But goes over lectures so quickly and if you havent taken AP Chem its very difficult to understand. Never got above a 60% on exams, even though I was doing 3 hours of chem a night. This class is what made me switch majors.
Does not give ANY partial credit for tests for online school. If you make a single mistake on a 12 pt problem, even if your procedure was 95% correct, you drop to a B. Another missed problem drops you to a C. 3 wrong problems and you fail. These tests have 15 questions
Do not take this professor if you value your personal happiness. Very harsh grader, insane time limits on quizzes and tests, 3 midterms and 4 quizzes, on top of all that she doesn't explain anything. Good luck to anyone unlucky enough to be in this class, I was stoked about a 50% on a midterm.
I had a 4.3 GPA in high school and had the highest grade in my high school chem class. I figured this class would be a piece of cake. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! Especially if you are an incoming freshman. Her lectures make zero sense and if you fail one test you will suffer, even if you get 100% on all of the other assignments. BEWARE!!
Don't listen to the negative reviews. She is not that bad. She's very sweet and chem is hard, but you just need to put in the work. She is always ready to help out students. Definitely do book problems and any extra problem she assigns, attend office hours and you will be fine.
She gives you 4 minutes to answer fill in test questions, but takes 30 minutes to explain a problem in class. Then, she'll get it wrong and you're even more confused. Go to her office hours or you will learn nothing. Even then, you end up teaching yourself chem. I might get a B, but I was lucky to ace the first test. It's all downhill from there.
I took this class online due to COVID, so my review is only viable for those who take this online. Professor Feldwinn has some of the worst lecture videos I have ever watched, you will need to be adamant about asking questions during office hours (which she runs very efficiently) and reading the textbook in depth. Youtube saved my life.
Darby is singlehandedly responsible for countless students changing their majors. Be ready for tests that look nothing like the study material, incoherent lectures and a lot of condescension. She does her best to make a hard class the hardest it can possibly be. And she doesnt curve more than like 2% MAX
Shes a wonderful and energetic person, she definitely didnt make me dread waking up at 8a.m but her class is a no. I spent countless hours studying and reviewing lecture videos, which are not helpful at all, just to end up failing almost every midterm/quiz. The tests are nothing like the practice tests she has available. Dont. Take. It.
The lectures aren't too bad, and the office hours are usually helpful if you go. The midterms and final were way harder than the practices provided, so watch out. If you don't get off to a good start in this class it will be hard to get a good grade. Curve was minimal.
Feldwinn seems like a nice person, but I found her teaching style to be bland and I never found myself excited to go to class. No partial credit is awarded on tests, so a few arithmetic mistakes lands you a D on a midterm. I think it's been tough on her teaching remotely, but the bottom line is you won't pass if unless you've already taken AP chem.
Feldwinn is nice and her office hours are super helpful. Don't be afraid to say you don't understand because she reuses a lot of questions for tests. Online tests are mostly type-in answers for all or nothing credit. Study problem sets from class, lectures, and ALEKS - don't worry about the really hard book problems and ALEKS topics. Go to class!!!
Prof Feldwinn's class is definitely not a breeze but also do-able. Go to office hours and do the book problems she assigns. Her office hours are pretty helpful and she is always ready to answer any questions without hesitation.
Holy mackerel. Great lady, but that class was a rollercoaster. She drops one midterm out of three, on homework, and one quiz out of four, so you have some leverage. But DO NOT slack off in this class!! Follow the instructions on the test, she will not give back points willy-nilly for silly mistakes. Half of each test is FRE. Not too bad though.
First of all, no. Avoid feldwinn at all costs!! Especially if its online, there's a reason why her class had 180 spaces while all the other ones were full. I ended up giving up on her class and switching my major too since it drained all my passion for chem. Feldwinn is good at chemistry, but she is certainly not good at teaching it.
If you care about your mental health, don't take this prof. Her explanations make chem 10x more difficult. She makes impudent remarks about students failing by choice, undermining the insane amount of hours per day they dedicate to make up for her inability to teach. Khan academy is the only way you'll survive (plus the final curve).
do not take Feldwinn. maybe its different in person but online was insane. the expectations of the class were ridiculous and she has no idea how to teach. she is super confusing and our whole class felt that same way. the only way I did well was because of the final curve but seriously stay away.....
Ive had feldwinn for chem 1a & 1b and although her class is pretty hard shes also such a great professor! Shes very open to questions and going over any concepts. go to office hours & do book problems and you should be fine. a lot of questions on her test are similar to practice problems she gives and goes over in class
I took Feldwinn for both Chem 1a and 1b and although she is a tough grader, she really prepares you for the rest of the Chem series and she's super available when you need help. Definitely be sure to go to office hours and review the in class problem sets she gives out because a lot of those are the test questions as well.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. You'd think someone who has a career in chemistry would have some ability to teach - not the case here. This professor lacks any ounce of ability to be clear in lectures, and gives the hardest exam questions possible after introducing the topic a week before, and literally expects us to be experts. 0.00/10
Before I took this class the reviews scared me, but I really liked feldwinn! I am not great at chem but feldwinn offers so many resources that helped me prepare. The tests and quizzes are a little difficult but that is chem. If u take advantage of everything she offers, u SHOULD pass. Got away with not doing book problems (u should) and i was fine.
Prof. Feldwinn requires students to arrive 5 minutes early to answer iClicker questions before class that students will not receive full credit for unless they are correct. Yes this same policy applies for her 8 am courses. Her tests are much more difficult than any other professor teaching the gen chem series. Dont take her if you have the choice
For a beginner chemistry class, this class was ridiculously hard. There is a quiz almost every week, you are expected to have done the reading and lectures before you attend class every week, and there are three midterms! We would finish a chapter in three days and there is no time to catch up. She seems passionate about chem just can't teach it.
This Professor is horrible! If you are thinking about taking her dont do it, and wait for next semester to take it with another Professor. Aleks hw barely helps you , and what really helps you pass the class is the midterms and final. If you want your mental health to drop then take it. I had to go into therapy because of her class
Feldwinn is a very entertaining lecturer, but her lectures only cover basic concepts. The book questions are quite difficult, but she posts the work and answers with them. If you just do the book questions and review the quiz questions, the midterms are not difficult. There's a lot of questions/work to do though. She gives good extra credit too.
I would never take this professor ever again. Not the worst Ive ever had but has the hardest midterms out of all professors & is inconsiderate. Goes way too fast during lectures & rushes through explanations. Save yourself and dont take her.
Yes shes hard, chem is hard. Feldwinn is actually a good lecturer, shes upbeat and engaging. For god sake participate and do your work book. There were so many times I was lost and had no idea what was going on, but I always made an active effort to answer questions. She has lecture vids on gouchospace, watch them b4 class and it will help!!!
Hands down the most difficult class I have ever taken. Her tests are impossible and the homework is extremely time consuming and does not help you understand the subject. If you take her class prepare to study for at least 3 hours a day to even have a chance at staying caught up.
Goes pretty quickly for an intro class so you reaaaally gotta keep up w the homework problems and watch some Organic Chemistry tutor on YouTube to clear stuff up. Her tests have FRQs and the challenge questions can be tough. All Im gonna say is trust the curve, cuz I failed every test all year and still passed the class?
Feldwinn makes sure you learn everything needed for gen chem but teaches the class like a highschool class (lots of busy work, tests are robotic) and is often inflexible about looking out for student needs
One of the worst classes I have taken. You are expected to come to class early to answer iClicker. Lectures are a waste of time and she is annoyingly hyper. Did all homework and understood the material on my own. The three midterms and final are nothing like homework or practice tests. Gives additional quizes on Gaucho Space.
Professor Feldwinn only teaches the basics and expects you to understand the hardest parts of all the material. She is also the only teacher who doesn't use multiple choice for the chemistry exams, which makes things more difficult than it already is. Chem is a requirement for most unfortunately, but I definitely recommend not taking this teacher.
She is the only one taking attendance, the only one has quizzes, and the one with the most amount of topics in Aleks among all general Chem teachers. Her explanations are unclear and there is no organized logic between the topics. She always mentions important things at the last minute of a lecture. She SUCKS!!!
A lot of mixed feelings about Feldwinn, she's very enthusiastic about chemistry and she's really easy to talk to if you're asking for help. On the other hand, her tests are impossibly hard and the questions she puts on the tests are so random. You have to study EVERY single book problem, every ALEKS topic, and in class problem to pass the tests.
Feldwinn is an awesome professor and really nice lady. She does iClicker questions so you have to go and there are quizzes every 2 weeks or so that are extremely hard. They aren't worth much though. Her exams are incredibly difficult and on the verge of being unfair. Although hard, I learned so much in her class.
Class was so hard for no reason, exams were literal hell, had to take the class again but chose a different professor and easily passed.
She is average I am not sure whether I would take her again. It was a lot of work compared to other chem classes. She has pre-assignments for every chapter and has quizzes every other chapter. All exams are mostly composed of free-answer, and let me tell you even if you are wrong by only decimals or units she would not give any credit.
No, No take any other professor but not her.
Very difficult exam, harsh grader, avoid at all cost!!!
This is by far one of the hardest classes you'll take as a premed student. Professor Feldwinn is an awful lecturer and speaks at around 100 mph. She gives an egregious amount of work as the ALEKS program she uses sucks. Also the tests are all FQE and are nearly impossible, she is very unforgiving with grades. I suggest getting a tutor to help you.
Her tests are TERRIBLE. The class average was 50% on the first Midterm, and not for lack of studying. The homework is extensive but not difficult, so you expect the same difficulty test as your homework, but you get slammed with a test that is 10x harder than the homework. Her class is a weeder class. Take it at your own risk.
Here's the thing about Darbs; She's really nice, but nothing really prepares you for the THREE midterms and numerous quizzes. Although she tries to help as much as possible, the questions are so unecessarily complicated. Take her if you literally don't have any other classes because you dedicate most to all of your time to studying for her exams.
If I could give her a 0, I would. Her class average has been a 50%, and blames the students for their lack of trying. It is clearly a reflection of her teaching. She expects way too much from the students. Save yourself and take anyone else. She is the only teacher who does not do multiple choice exams.
Midterms are almost impossible to pass. Questions are worth up to 10 points each and there is no partial credit. Say you forget a unit or round to the wrong decimal place in your final answer, you will receive a 0 out of 10. She expects students to study chemistry for more than 2 hours every single day of the week. You will never catch a break.
She doesn't give any partial credits for the tests. She only look at the final answer. If you make a little mistake for one free response question, you will lose all the points.
DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS. - Expect to spend 4-5 hours on this class everyday - Only professor that doesn't do multiple choice tests - Talks really fast in lectures and moves on even if it's clear students don't understand - Expect to teach yourself a lot of the material If you do take it: - Do the book problems - Go to CLAS
Feldwinn's Chem 1A is a class where you cannot make any mistakes in. DO the book problems and learn how to do word problems in under 3 minutes and you might have a chance.
You HAVE TO READ the textbook and take notes before every class, and DO EVERY SINGLE BOOK PROBLEM (at least twice) to do well. Exams take questions directly from the textbook, lecture and ALEKS (same numbers, even) so review those, and do CLAS. Not ideal for a psyc major, but good rigor if you have to take a lot of chem/bio in the future.
her test questions were from the homework but the exams were free response and she doesn't look at work just the final answer
The test are hard, but when you take other professors you will realize that her teaching methods are honestly the best. She goes through problems step by step and does them in a hierarchal order. Although she seems to expect more from her students than any other professor, the amount of work that you put in pays off in the end. DO THE BOOK PROBLEMS
AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I've never felt more defeated as a student than in her class. No matter how many book problems I did, how much I read, how many hours I studies, I continued to do poorly on tests. I attended 1 lecture from a different professor and learned infinitely more than I ever did in Feldwinn. Exams are FRQs but no partial credit.
L teacher. L class. L rizz. I came into this class excited over the prospect of learning a new outlook of chemistry. However, I was thoroughly disappointed over the discouraging learning environment of this class. I lost my passion over chemistry and changed my major and changed schools to SBCC. Don't take this class if you want happiness.
She gives extra busy work and quizzes that other teachers don't. She is the only gen chem teacher who gives free response but doesn't give partial credit for it anyway. She has the worst lecture/midterm/final time slots (8 am lectures and midterms/finals are the week's last days so you go home late). But she's a good lecturer just a bit fast.
Feldwinn is easily the worst chem teacher at this school. She literally doesn't everything different then every other chem teacher, her students do poorly and she never changes anything. He literally uses test questions for Iclicker and expects us to get it right after she just explained it 5 seconds for. Doesn't explain things well at all
LLLLL. I suggest either taking another professor or switching to gender studies. You spend hours doing aLeks, and the morbede amount of book probLems she hands out. On top of that, Lectures are 100 mph, so expect to review that materiaL. Oh, also don't forget to read the chapters from the textbook! Absolutely out of control.
Moves so fast
She doesn't explain anything that she does in lecture. she just goes through everything without any reason behind it. If students don't understand, she expects them to figure it out on their own outside of class. All her tests are free response and very rarely multiple choice. She is brutal.
Her lectures are well done but very fast paced, she teaches as though you should already understand new concepts which makes it quite difficult, especially towards the end of the quarter. 8 HW assignments on ALEKS, 4 quizzes, 3 midterms, 1 final. Class ave. is in the high 60%, low 70% range. You need to work HARD to pass this class, so don't slack!
Do not take the professor if you can at all help it. I promise you're better off waitlisting another professor or taking chem another quarter! Not worth the stress. Tests are open answers, so if you're not exactly correct, you get a zero. Lectures were at 8:00 am with before-class questions at 7:45, which went away at 8:00, & showed up on the exam.
Feldwinn is notoriously the hardest gen chem prof for a reason. If possible switch professors! If you get stuck with her (like I did) do every single book problem, quiz problem, iclicker, and Aleks when studying, she uses them word for word on exams. Exams are mostly free response with no partial credit.
Really a bad teacher. Believes pedagogy is unimportant. Prefers hard, obscure minutia over understanding. Unfriendly and unwelcoming. Would rather eat you with a side of fava beans than have you learn the course info. Eat me darby.
Feldwinn's 1A class is notoriously challenging, but engaging with the textbook, practice problems, and resources like Unstuck study AI can help you navigate it. The lectures move quickly, so staying focused is key. It's a tough class, but doable with hard work.
such a great personality and a great teacher, but AWFUL EXAMS. you basically have to memorize every single question you've seen and she has assigned order to do well. average is a C on all exams and final exam had no questions like the ones we practiced, in which i failed. be prepared to spend countless hours to get nothing out of it.
She is a difficult professor, and mostly lives up to her reputation. However as long as you do every single one of the practice problems assigned, you should be fine. She's definitely not the best at explaining some topics, but all the questions on her test are taken from practice problems she's assigned, so not too bad.
Professor Feldwinn was a decent teacher. She reads from her slides and asks for questions. She uses alkes and you HAVE to pay 100 dollars for the website. She does not understand your personal situations most of the time. And when the class starts at 8am she ends the attendance question at 8am that means getting there by 7:45am or so
The way feldwinn's lecture is ran is WAY to fast where I spend the entire lecture just trying to write down what was just said and no time to absorb what it means. iClicker (mandatory attendance) is straight up stupid, ESPCIALLY since its graded on correctness. Overall, patronizing to her students and doesnt treat them like adults.
The midterms are horrible and I truly don't understand why they are not multiple choice if she is not grading our work /steps. Most of the class is failing midterms and despite the average being 44 SHE DIDNT CURVE IT. I genuinely wish I could have taken any other teacher before commuting the mistake of taking her class.
excessive amount of work. canvas: confusing. professor: no empathy (grades quite harshly if your work does not say exactly what she wants) No crazy exams but lots of time outside of class. Good luck if you have to take her, she will you eat you alive.
Excessive amount of work to do for this class. She has no empathy (grades quite harshly if your work does not say exactly what she wants). Her canvas is so confusing. No crazy exams but lots of time outside of the class. Good luck if you have to take her; she will you alive. If you don't have to take her, run fast in the opposite direction!
Feldwinn 1B would be an okay class if we were on a semester schedule…but we're not. She gives an unbelievable amount of homework for being a gen chem class and her syllabus is nothing like the other professors. She also puts a midterm on the last day to withdraw so if you think you're going to fail don't wait for your scores to come out just drop.
Save yourself; don't take her class. Her exams are super difficult -- there are a lot of free-response questions, but she only grades your final answer. Her class is significantly harder than all the other chem professors'. If you don't understand every single textbook, in-class, and Aleks problem, you're screwed. CLAS is the only reason I passed.
If you can get a diff chem teacher, do it. She lectures too fast, quizzes are hard, and her tests have FRQs with no half credit. Office hours are semi-helpful, but she's mostly just yelling in your face lol. But if you're stuck with Feldwinn, just LOCK IN. Go to every lecture, do your book problems, sign up for CLAS. Good luck
So much extra credit and the problems for the midterms are exactly the problems we do in class (iclickers, notes, etc), before class, aleks, book problems, quizzes, and midterm practice. The answers are the exact same. It does take a lot of work and time to do all the problems but I promise if you just do all the problems assigned you can pass.
Never take her. Never take her class. She made me sit in a WET seat during an exam because there was a leak in the building. She is also a horrible professor. Never take her class.
Learned a lot but it is almost impossible to get an A in this class.
Really good lecturer and made things super understandable and easy to follow along. Walks through problems with you. Having said that, really hard quizzes and tests (much harder than most of the stuff learned in class). Book problems are a must. Only teaches 8 ams. Honestly one of my favorite chem professors due to her lecture style but hard class.
DO NOT TAKE.
Do not take this lecture
Don't take her unless you have absolutely no choice. If you do have to take her, do ALL the book problems; she gets most of her test questions from the textbook and ALEKS. I went to office hours and it was actually very helpful, I wouldn't have passed without going.
Professor Feldwin, I hope you're reading this. You obviously love your subject but you're making it extremely hard to pass your class. Unreasonably hard. Teach the love of chemistry to your students the way you love it, don't make us hate it instead
Feldwinn is a very organized and thoughtful professor. She tends to explain things clearly, and despite moving quickly in lecture, she'll always answer students' questions. Her tests greatly resemble textbook and in class problems. The class is well structured, and working hard will get you an A. This is my opinion. Your experience may differ.
Feldwinn is an amazing teacher who cares a lot about her students. She's clear about grading and deadlines, and always willing to help in class or office hours or anytime whatsoever. It's important that you do the book problems and everything assigned in her emails. The content is challenging, so stay up to date on the work!
The class was pretty demanding but on the whole fair-the questions on the test were taken verbatim from the homework's/lectures. Homework was optional so it's rly up to you how much work you wanna put in.
Pros: All problems on the midterms/finals are problems she has assigned you before. Some extra credit opportunities. Lots of grade padding. Passionate. Cons: Insane amount of homework (graded). Starts class at 7:45AM w/ iClicker (mandatory)! ZERO leniency in grading. Difficult content. How to succeed: Do a million practice problems. Literally.
Amazing teacher who obviously loves teaching chemistry but makes it almost impossible to get a good grade. Curves down too
This professor is amazing. Professor Feldwinn alongside the TA Carolyn made this class fun and worthwhile! Carolyn was able to explain concepts amazing and is truly passionate about helping students. I would recommend Professor Feldwinn to anyone who wants to learn chemistry from a passionate teacher! Also generous grade bumps. ie: F->C, D->B….
I would say this professor's grading policy is not reflective of a students intellect and ability but rather their ability to study specific questions and remember a specific answer. There is no partial credit awarded on exams and don't let the “every question tested you have seen before” fool you into thinking you're safe…. She assigns hundreds
This class is absolutely insane and ridiculous. Never had a professor worse than Feldwinn. If you want to see cute smart guys, take the class, otherwise you're getting nothing else out of it but a teacher who is not nice, doesn't grade well, and will curve grades by accident! Because of this class I'm going to switch majors. UGHHH IM SO MAD.
Before taking this course, I ate, slept, and breathed chemistry. I now have nightmares about the subject. She has zero compassion for her students. She makes the class impossible to succeed in and entirely about your ability to memorize specific problems. I missed one problem on an exam and got 15% off my score. No partial credit. The lady's evil
Multiple opportunities for extra credit and her grading was made in a way to get you lots of points back. Three midterms and 4 online quizzes, but your lowest midterm gets dropped if you score higher on the final. Prof. Feldwinn cares a lot about her students, so if you're struggling make sure to go to office hours and do the book problems!!!
