SO BORING, but a huge GER booster! Her system of grading makes it almost impossible to fail. We never used the book, attendance isn't mandatory(though she says it is), lecture slides are on blackboard, exams aren't cumulative, grade is based on three exams, class is hell to sit through. She's not exactly the brightest, but she's nice.
ok ill admit that the class was pretty boring...i had a hard time showing up...but she is just so nice...i felt bad not coming to class bc she is just so nice...way easy class too...its just another GER class that will boost ur GPA...take it if u dont care about the subject
I don't know how she could make the subject matter intersting, but she did. For a person who hates science and only took it as a GER class I have to say it was interesting =and she knows her stuff.
this way my favorite class this semester. A great teacher and a disappointment none of her classes for spring semester fit into my schedule. I enjoyed the class and teaching methods. The concepts were well presented and tied. in.
great class. very clear on what was expected from students. made sure class had full knowledge of material.
She's a little weird sometimes...she told me to "not get up during class." Are we in high school, lady? Also, she gave me a 0 on a quiz when I was legitimately sick and couldn't get out of bed. She tries hard and teaches well, but the class itself is SUCH A DRAG....you have to fight to stay awake.
I fell in love with her teaching style. Very beautiful woman, awesome professor.
Dr. Boellstorff rocked my world. Geographically speaking, of course.
She has a way about her that makes students feel comfortable and eager to learn. This made my quantitative geography experience superb! She's a ball of fun to talk to outside of class too! Don't let her bore you with soil erosion talk....she has a lot more to offer! I got a C in her class but she just hated the fact that I talked too much.
Hip woman. You may be inclined to call her Dr. B(DON'T DO IT!)because her last name is tough. She prefers to be called by her full title. It's not pronounced Bowl-storff. But rather, "Bell". She's got a Zest for life and brings it with her to class.Never moody, she likes to be available for students when they need a hand. Deep thinker be ready A+.
she's pretty chill. Dr. B kept my attention in ways many students have a tough time understanding. But I'll admit it, I had this HUGE crush on her so that might be why...? These ratings are stupid though, just take her, experience the REAL THING! Trust me when I say this: she has cool blue eyes.
Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder
She's almost like a tall bucket full of geographic knowledge/water. Just be the sponge...become the sponge, you won't regret it!!
As more and more time goes by since my graduation in 2006, I feel even more fortunate to have added Dr. Boellstorff to my schedule. I experienced her during her first semester at BSC, so I can only imagine that having her now would be 100 times better. She's not that easy but having energy and perseverance should pay off! good luck
She is a really nice woman and a very good teacher. She's super smart and understands the tools necessary to teach her students well. I've had two classes with her and I'll be taking a third in the spring and I'm sure I'll love it. And she's sweet too.
She shows really cool movies and documentaries sometimes :)
she's soooooo nice! such a good teacher. you'll learn a lot.
I LOVE HER! she is soo smart and so nice and she will teach you a whole lot. tests are multiple choice, and if you study, you'll do well! she makes everything so much easier to understand. notes are in powerpoint, so it's pretty easy to follow. assignments take some time, but it's worth it. TAKE HER! she's amazinggg!
Darcy is bomb. She is the most knowledgeable professor/geologist I have met. She was the reason I woke up on Tuesday/Thursdays. Geo 122 was the best class of the entire semester + it's not b/c it's a slacker class. I was able to apply the knowledge I learned to the world. By far, the best class + professor of my 2nd semester at BSC. Fabulous!
I think there are a lot of professors out there who are easy to walk all over and take advantage of (especially brand new ones). Darcy is different. Don't try to manipulate her because you will probably feel bad about it for the rest of your life. All she wants to do is help you and see you do well. It took me a long time to realize that.
I wish I never had her
Nice lady. Don't ever take her online though. Not very clear cut with what she wants for your responses. Tests are weird. Better to hear the material. Still a nice lady. Smart.
I hear ya .. i'm bombing her online course. I keep getting hecka confused. I think I would enjoy taking her for a real class. She's been sort of nice face to face ...but I just don't see why everyone thinks she's "super nice".
Her online course is definitely a challenge, I'm taking it right now, but taking an online course in science is just asking for trouble if you're not interested in science. if you take one of her courses in person, I've had her for GIS twice - she's super nice, yes, and definitely will help you out with what you need.
DO NOT TAKE HER ONLINE. I've never taken her in person but her online class is awful. Way too much work for a general requirement. Spent hours on assignements and still failed.. tell me how that works?
I'm taking her online course right now and find her to be really helpful. There are six assignments over the semester and the lowest one is not counted toward your grade. They take quite a bit of work but if you email her with a question about the assignment she emails back basically give you the answer.
I find the online course pretty easy. she'll drop the lowest scores from exams and assignments.
defintely take her online, basically if you do the reading and assignments. There are three tests, it's all open book and note because it's all onlien. The exams are timed though but they're all multipe choice and true false.
not to difficult online but there were a total of 6 assignments and 4 tests. the lowest grades were dropped and she scaled assignments or tests when the average was below a C+. I would recommend it, pretty straightforward for a nonlab science.
I took this geology class because it was online and fills a science requirement. interesting information, several assignments and exams.
THE ABSOLUTE WORST CLASS I HAVE EVER TAKEN...HER ONLINE COURSE IF AWFUL...SO MUCH WORK...NEVER EVER TAKE HER...I COULD GO ON FOREVER
This class was really good. It was the first online class I had taken and it went well. The blackboard site was setup well and you always felt up to date with what was happening.
I'm a full time student and I also work full time 3rd shift. It is difficult for me to meet with my professors in between sleeping and studying. It took her days to respnd to my emails and sometimes she didn't even bother. I even left her an important message on the phone and it didn't seem to matter to her. I'm so busy all I need is 2 secs
Absolutely the worst teacher I have encountered so far. She is very unwilling to work with the student. Her exams are impossible and so she always scales them because the averages are C and below. If at all possible, NEVER take a course from this teacher. I don't mind hard, but she is impossible if there is a problem. Book is outrageously priced
She can be very unclear at times, but she is aware of her shortcomings and does her best to make up for them. She is extremely nice, and always got back to me within the hour if i emailed her questions. There are a lot of assignments, but if you stay on top of everything you'll do great. She gives plenty of time for everything.
Expects you to know a lot, but she can't teach. Only 2 exams which are SUPER LONG. Doesnt realize not everyone knows everything about geographical databases. Goes through material far to quick. Don't take this class unless you absolutely need to
I hate this class so much. Your grade is basically based on 2 midterms, the final, & a pointless blog. She can't explain anything correctly but expects us to just magically know what she's talking about. On top of all of that the class is boring and dont be late more than 4 times otherwise your grade will go down an entire letter.
this class is for people with a good background in geography, without that you're guarunteed to fail..honestly her score shouldn't be higher than a 1.
probably the best class i've had so far. definitely not easy, but shes fair and even with everyone. you will learn a lot, but if you don't like to work, good luck.
awesome teacher.
I had Darcy Boellstorff for 2 semesters of GIS at Bridgewater and she was wonderful, helpful and I learned tons. I went on to do a graduate certificate in GIS out of state and am now working as a GIS technician at a software company back in MA. She literally changed my life.
I took her Physical Geography class. Overall it was a good class, but the fact that her tests were part essay based were kind of difficult, so you need to make sure that you go to class. Everything she does over in class will be covered on the exam, so take really good notes. Attend the review sessions.
I loved this online class...She was very encouraging and helpful. Everytime I had a question it was answered in record time. The class is quite a bit in number of quizzes and assignments, but I would still take it over with this prof. if given a choice
I'm taking the summer online course now. I had bad experiences in History with a online web class I took last summer but this class already I can tell is organized and she has already graded my assignment even though it is the second day of class so far. I am actually not hating this summer class.
great online class
taking this online - I hope it will be an easy A, quiz questions appear on the exams. It takes some work - I spend about 3 hours a week on it. The instructor is nice. She answers email quickly.
Took this class online for to fulfill my science requirement. It is time consuming, but very straightforward. Exams are challenging, but she usually scales them and drops the lowest grade. Overall, she wants you to achieve and gives you many chances to pass! I would recommend this class!
daily small assignments, but easy to get ahead. weekly quiz that you can retake as many times that you want. tests go off of the quizzes and are great. I have no complains, it was a great online class and I have no interest in the subject. She is a really good professor, definitely take her.
Great online! So glad I took it this semester. Easy A. The level of work for this class is just right for an online class. I'd recommend taking it with her. The grading is more than fair. She responds to questions within minutes. Literally.
I love the class! So helpful! Ok, it requires work but by the end of the semester you have a lot of information. She grades fairly, do the assignments, you get an A. She is really helpful, wants students to learn. We didn't have to buy a textbook.
Dr. Boellstorf makes you smart! She's the most helpful and caring professor I've had. Her expectations are high, but you'll enjoy the challenge. She really makes it feel like a team effort. I felt she really cared if I understood. I still don't love math, but the class wasn't bad at all.
This was actually a fun online course, interesting topics. The work didn't take a ton of time. There were a lot of assignments but were relatively short. There were 4 exams, weekly quizzes. The exam questions were difficult, but the lowest scores are dropped. Grading was generous, and she gave comments with most assignments.
This is a great online course and it fills a science requirement. I actually would have taken it anyway. She answers emails quickly, like within an hour. The course is very organized and there are some interesting mapping assignments.
Great class, excellent prof. It is a lot of work but so well worth the effort. She told me during the semester that I'd thank her later. this was when I would complain about the work. And it's true. Thank you, Dr. Boellstorff! You will learn tons.
Great online course based on environmental issues. There were many easy but interesting assignments. Much of the class and activities were on Massachusetts information. You learn about your own town and the water, pollution and how rubbish is dealt with.
Dr. Boellstorff is an exceptional professor, she is available to assist you with understanding the projects and homework. She has good knowledge in terms of Remote Sensing and GIS. You will learn a lot in her classes.
I've taken six classes with Darcy and she is by far the best professor I've had. Pretty shy and quiet, struggles to make her point sometimes, but is the sweetest lady you'll ever meet. Very fair grader if you do the work. The pace of the class is usually based on how students are doing. Keeps up with grading & responds to emails quickly. Take her!!
Great class. Actually I found it very interesting although I'm a Biology major. I wouldn't mind taking another class with her or using this type of mapping. The work is done using a special software called envi and satellite images - assignments are mainly done with class time. Really helpful prof.
She truly cares about students learning. Much of the class is spent working on the assignments and projects which she helps you with individually if you want help with it. Super nice lady.
Great class, lots of fun. Dr. Boellstorff is a great prof although she has really high expectations. She presents things very clearly and in a way that makes even dull information interesting. I would highly suggest taking her. Her class is challenging but doable.
I've taken several classes with Dr. Boellstorff. Wants you to learn real life skills and is very knowledgeable about what she teaches. I would definitely recommend taking any of her classes.
Darcy is one of the best professors I've had. Her real world applications of GIS and online portfolio get you ready and thinking about a career after graduation. All of her classes cover interesting and relevant topics. Her classes can be difficult but she always adjusts them if students speak up about an issue. Very easy to talk to one on one.
Great online class that's not too difficult, yet interesting and fun. There are several short assignments per topic. What I like most is that you select 4 world locations for the first assignment and then use them in applying concepts for several of the assignments during the rest of the class.
Dr. Boellstorff is awesome! I took the class for geography credit to graduate. Wasn't interested in remote sensing. But it turned out to be good. The material takes some knowledge of statistics that she assumes you know. There are a couple of quizzes. Overall easy. If you come to class and make the effort on the work it's an A.
Darcy gets nervous talking sometimes but is a really good professor. She takes her time and makes sure everyone understand everything before moving on. If you ask her for help she is more than willing to lead you in the right direction. Easy classes but you also learn a lot or cool stuff.
Dr. Boellstorff hands out a lot of work, but you actually learn something interesting by doing it. So I'm going to just jump on the bandwagon and say that her classes are pretty great. Anybody who has the chance should take the GIS or the remote sensing class, you will definitely not be sorry.
I absolutely loved this class. It was very straight forward and I really enjoyed the material! I cant wait to take another class with Dr. Boellstorff!!!
This was a great class. Thank you for all of your support this past semester. The class and Blackboard was very difficult for me but with her assistance it made it possible for me to not only pass but get an A in this class.
This class was unbelieveably easy. The assignments were tedious but they were not hard at all. All the answers could be found in the book. She is a super easy grader and many of the assignments are the length of this review. The class doesn't take a lot of reading but make sure to hand in all the assignments.
Nice online class. I took this during the Christmas break and there were several assignments and quizzes due each week. The assignments were short but there were quite a few of them. She grades easy and quick. Answers email within a few hours.
Took it online over winter break. No papers, easy homework, and really easy grader. Seems that if you submit the work on time you get a 5/5. Also you DON'T need to buy the text book! A little googleing never hurt!
Took GIS with her in the fall and taking the second GIS class this spring. Great teacher, wants to help you succeed. There are a lot of projects and assignments but she gives you class time to work and is very fair with grading. Expect to work outside class some as well. I wasn't going to take the second course, but became addicted to GIS.
Great class this semester . Made the statistics interesting with maps and a GIS program. Pretty easy overall if you go to class. A good portion of class is spent working on assignments. Only 1 quiz so far which was exactly like the study guide.
this class was super easy. She posts the work several weeks in advance. You can do all the assignments and forget about the class for a few weeks until she posts the next unit. Assignments are very straightforward and can be done quickly. Easy grader too.
Easy online class. Has assignments due every MWF that are super quick and easy. Very easy grader. Quiz questions come straight from the book. Would recommend if you're looking for an easy A.
Good for an online class overall. Pretty easy grader although some of the assignments are difficult and wasn't sure of how to do the mapping assignments using the online Arch sofeware.
We have to take this class as part of the major. I was afraid of GIS because I heard it was really difficult. She explained everything. The pace of the class was perfect. I learned a lot. I can't believe it.
This is a great online class! The assignments are short and interesting. The quizzes are tough but you can take them multiple times to improve your grade. You need the textbook for the quizzes. The grading is easy overall but spelling and grammar count. She answers emails very quickly and grades assignments quickly too.
Dr. Boellstorff is the best. She is weird and quirky but is a good professor. Shows from the beginning how useful GIS is.
I will be forever grateful to this professor, she was kind to me even when nobody else was, and she gave me confidence when I had no idea what that meant. She is a good person
Breakdown of online class: 61 assignments (2-3 p/ day), 12 quizzes (no late, but take as many times as needed), 3 papers, and 2 projects. All work was easy to complete (could do homework w/in 3hrs), however it was a lot to keep track of. Homework was due by 4pm each MWF, could be done late w/ 10% deduction p/ day. Overall easy to do, I recommend.
The online class was very straightforward. There several short assignments, about 10 quizzes. There were also two projects that took me about 2 hours each to complete. She answered email very quickly.
Super nice and cares about students learning the material. There is a lot of partiicpation during class but not difficult if you keep up and pay attention. I don't recommend skipping class.
I was having lot of problems in the semester and she met me in skype at 6:00 in the morning for help. My schedule is very busy and need to take online classes. The assignments are many but they are small homeworks with only about 4 questions on each. She grades easy.
Great class and would recommend. But the material moves quick sometimes and the explanations are fast. Her expectations are somewhat high, but if you come to class she'll help you through the process each step.. Soem things can be hard to try on your own.
I am taking one of Professor Boellstorff's online classes now and I love it. Her assignments are not hard at all, just answer the questions she asks and you will be fine. Extremely happy that I signed up for this class, she is a great professor and very nice.
Darcy is literally the best professor, she is super easy going and really cares about her students. You can talk to her about literally anything. She gets frazzled at times but its kind of funny.
For a low 100s level entry online course this is absurd how much time this teacher expects you to put into a class most people are not taking as a major clearly. Stay away.
I have taken this professor for two online classes and I would definitely take her again. The assignments are easy, everything is laid out week by week, the tests are the same weight as an assignment, the tests have endless attempts. Honestly, you have to try hard to fail. There is no textbook. Instead, Dr. Boellstorff provides the reading.
(Environmental Geo Online) For starters, this class was very easy. 2-3 homework assignments every week plus a quiz, yet very manageable between other classes. She accepts late work with a small grade deduction too. She is a perfect match for this class and most likely other geography classes as well! Highly recommend!
Fun class. Three exams, about 10 quizzes (online). Easy A. She's a great teacher and loves the material and teaching. It shows. Very caring.
I'm not good at science and had to take this for my non lab and lab requirement. She's awesome! Your homework each week is to complete a quiz online. All the answers are in your book you just need to have it in front of you and read each detail! The labs are easy. For exams you get a full sheet of paper to write anything you want on it. Easy A.
This class might be easier in person but am taking it during the pandemic and this is my only option. It is organized very well. might be useful to have a synchronous part, but every Sunday she sends us hours each day the following week she is in our zoom session. She's incredible helpful and always seems so happy to see you on zoom.
I absolutely recommend taking Physical Geography with her! I took the class over the summer and although it was a lot of work crammed in 5 weeks, it was definitely manageable. She is a very fair grader and you can take the multiple choices quizzes as many times as youd like in the allotted time frame. She answered my emails right away!
Easy class, I took GEOG130 online and she graded very easy. However, assignments are time consuming but almost mindless, and quizzes and things have typos and misspellings all over the place, she pretty obviously dosent revise anything she writes so it dosent always make sense.
This was a non lab science course. I found the topics mostly interesting. the class met once a week and then 1 video lecture and assignment per week. so a total of about 2 assignments per week and a final project. she grades easy.
I highly recommend this professor. I took the class for a requirementand isn't related to my finance major at all. But the material was very well organized and presented. There was the flexibility of the hybrid although there was a recorded video and assignment each week and another assignment during class. No quizzes or exams just a final project.
One of the sweetest and most organized professors I've had! Class work is manageable, just weekly lectures and modules with 2-4 activities each, and bi-weekly Flipgrid videos. The lectures and classwork are engaging and fun. She's a fair grader as well. Blackboard page is also the most navigable and orderly I've ever seen at BSU. Highly recommend!!
Great professor, clear, organized, and you can tell she enjoys her job. Assignments were easy and do not take long to complete, no tests or quizzes only 2 midterm papers. She provides the book in PDF format but you won't really need it. It's a stress free and interesting class.
This was the most well-organized online asynchronous course I've ever taken. Professor Boellstorff created lectures that were easy to understand even for non-majors. She responded quickly to emails and gave assignments that were fun and straightforward.
Dr.Boellstroff is amazing so kind and helpful. She would always help during lab when I didn't understand. The final exam was fairly easy as well as long as you did the other work throughout the semester.
Although this class was a lot of work I am glad I took it. She was very understanding and nice and was a very easy grader so even though there was a lot of work, I would totally take her again. Her midterms are taken at home and there is homework every week that is due the next week. The final presentation has to be presented but isn't super hard.
Classes were boring at times but I enjoyed the hands on activities and the final project. She is very helpful answering any question you have and responds to emails very quickly./
Do not take the lab if you plan on taking it over the summer. She makes everything slightly more difficult than it needs to be. The work isn't hard, but the way that she sets it up, and the way we need to retrieve materials in so time consuming, and for many assignments I couldn't even get the content in order to finish the assignment.
I enjoyed this professor and you could tell she cares about the subject. She would go through slideshows for the first 20 minutes of class and then we would do the lab and answer some questions. There were about 3 assingments per class and she would help you if you asked questions. She usually lets you out early too so it was nice.
Do NOT take the lab with her, the online lecture course is easy as can be but the in person lab is horrible. She does not give directions and expects you to just do everything on your own. Final project at the end is based off all the labs and she does not make that known and throws the final project on you the Tuesday after thanksgiving. 0/10
TAKE THE LAB with her! took as a lab science, and I have to say, it was awesome! super interesting and easy to follow, tough concepts were made simple, and the hands-on lab work really helped me. She made the class feel really welcoming, it was a great class, and I learned a ton
Professor Boellstorff makes the class engaging with hands-on activities. While lectures can be dry at times, she is very helpful and responsive. Unstuckstudy was a game-changer for studying.
Great class so far, I really recommend taking GIS with Dr. Boelstorff. She enjoys the subject so much and it comes across.
Yeah the class can be a little boring but all you have to do is show up and she gives you the answers to the labs. You will legit get a 100 on everything. I missed two labs and still got an A in the class. She is very nice and an easy way to meet your lab requirement.
I took a few classes with her several years ago. She is a kind, thoughtful, and caring person, and a great professor.
Took her for my lab. The labs were very easy and she gave the answers most of the time. However, whenever we would ask about something in the lab, it looked like she was looking at the lab for the first time and was just as confused as us. It seemed like she didn't know what she gave us. I would suggest taking another professor if you can.
