I think she is an awesome teacher. She is really helpful but you really have to work hard for your grade. I learned alot from her class. She really makes anthropology interesting. The class consists of online tests and quizes. The tests are no joke you really have to study for them.As long as you keep up on the reading and study you will be fine.
I took this class instead of Bio, and had no interest but she is a really great teacher. She is so eager to help you and the tests are all online. Not too much homework, but enough to make a difference. Recommended!!
Took the class instead of Bio, and i loved it. Not a hard subject. Powerpoint lectures mostly, but she's really clear about what we need to know. All 4 tests are online, 1 group project, study guides are extremely helpful. Most of the test stuff comes from in-class notes. She's funny, and will take the time to explain anything. Take her!
Mostly lectures, small group projects, one major group project, 4 online exams, and homework assignments. Great professor, very clear, nice and very helpful!!!! Definitely recommend!!!
Very cool teacher. Be prepared to work and be able to have time to read the text. Extremely knowledgeable if this is your field of study.
Excellent! She is very straightforward in her tests, which were online, study guides, and what she expected 4rm u in the assignments. There was quite a few papers, and we had to go to 2 cultural events that related to the class, but it wasn't hard. Just read, show up to class and take notes from her powerpoint presentations. Interesting class as well
She is a great teacher. Having online tests is so much better than taking them in class. You get and hour and twenty minutes and I used every minute of it. I totally recommend it! I am a not the brightest and did not attend all the time and I still got a B.
To be honest I am pretty good in school. Above a 3.5 GPA and yet this teacher threw me for a loop. Never fail a class yet this was my first one. Unless you are a freaking genius do not take this class just about every student in my class failed it. The only difference is she doesn't always keep you full class.
Another star at old AVC! Amazing professor, not an easy A I also took her for 102, but Darcy is well the female Vento of AVC! You will leave the class with a great understanding of the subject and might even switch your major!
She is a good resource on the subject (she knows her stuff) but she has an unrealistic grading scale! Many people in my class failed and several were forced to drop. (like me)You have to make this class your entire world to get a good grade. (come on- its an INTRO class... really?!) The tests are unrealistic class average was a D on most of them!
Ridiculous grading scale for an intro class. Had taken during the summer, so expected a more difficult curriculum. However requesting students to drop all other classes before said class is absurd without being anywhere near full time for the intersession. If you are not majoring in this subject take Earl, do not make the same mistake.
She is an amazing person. I could sit and talk to her for hours, she is very knowledgable. But this class isnt an easy A i took it over the summer, and got a C and i worked for that C. It's very interesting to learn about where we came from. She is willing to help you as much as she can. I would recomend her if you want to learn about anthropology.
Darcy cares about her students and is a great resource.
This class is hard! Took over summer 2009 and a lot of students failed/dropped. However, she is a GREAT teacher and you will learn. A lot of group activities in the class, a couple papers, film review and online tests (loved that!). Attend every class and do ALL the work and you can pass. She is very helpful if you are struggling.
super awesome teacher. the class can be a bit hard, with the group project and all. but overall, she makes the subject interesting because she has so much experience going out and actually doing everything she lectures about.
I consider myself an above average student with a 3.2 GPA. I usually don't write these unless I want to really get the word out, and I think on this one it is very important. Try to take another teacher if possible. The test are the hardest tests I've taken at AVC (and I have over 60 units). The class is extremely stressful. Be aware!
It was a fun class i took it last semester as long as you do all the assignments and extra credit you'll be fine. And go to class participation counts
Its only been two weeks but i already love her to pieces. she is funny, smart, and very helpful and i am so excited for the semester(even if its a big bad intro class...dummies)
This teacher forced me to drop her class because she expected so much, that with a full load of classes and everything else in between, I just had to withdraw. I am an above average student, but it was seriously impossible to pass this class. Her tests are super hard, and she expects so much. Do not recommend this teacher!
It is true you must work hard in this class, but I got and A pretty easily.Do not go take the boring teacher you will not learn anything from, instead challenge yourself to actually read the book, show up to class, and learn like they expect you to at a university! If you have trouble GO TO OFFICE HOURS!I have taken lots of profs.& she is one of the bes
One of those teachers I've never wanted to take again. She's nice and her class is interesting, but the assignments are way too hard. True, this course is suppose to be hard, but the teacher does not have to make it harder than what it is. The exams are hard, and the written assignments were a load of crap. I don't recommend this teacher at all.
What I meant to say was, "This course is suppose to be hard, but the teacher does not make it any easier at all". Most likely I'll get a D in this class. It's not worth it at all. If any other teachers are available for this course, take it.
MOST AWESOME teacher! If you are lazy, don't take this class.MUST read chapters and assigned readings. Not a lot of assignments, but the ones she gives take time and effort.Tests-do the study guide and you'll pass. You'll fail without her guide. She loves the subject and is fun to learn from, very passionate. She gives xtra credit-recommended to do
I took Wiewall for both Physical And Cultural Anthropology and I Love her! She grades hard, and expects you to do the work. So if you get a bad grade, its becuase your not putting fourth the effort. She makes her class very interesting, and teaches by sharing stories that relate with the topic! Take lots of notes, and do the study ?'s b4 the test!
I honestly do not recommend this teacher at all. Yes, she is nice and very knowledgeable, but she is extremely difficult. The tests and assignments are very hard and her grading is very difficult. I have taken many classes at AVC (I have 70 plus units) and this class was by far the hardest and most stressful.
Yes, her grading and tests are difficult, but there is so much to learn in this class. You can tell she still has a passion for what her subject is, which should help motivate you learning it. She sometimes goes off on personal stuff, but will get back on track. I recommend her
She expects way too much for an intro class. Tests are super hard and elaborate detail is expected when answering essay questions. Seriously take another teacher!! If this isn't your major Don't take Wiewall!!!
She's hard, but fair. Detailed, but not boring. You WILL work for your grade, but that's fine...and the whole point of higher education. She knows her stuff, and manages to make it exciting. Unless you want to go nuts, avoid this class in summer. She's helpful, and approachable. Another perk? She's nice to look at.
I am an above average student and suggest you to take this class if you want "W" or "F" on your transcript.
I'm warning Every1! She's the Hardest teacher I've ever had,her class was the only 1 I have ever dropped of my college career. Requires Almost Daily assignments.you can turn in your Best Work & it's Not good enough, her Tests R way too difficult. I remember,1st day of class she said she teaches like a University & she Was Not Lieing, Save yourself!
She was definitely a hard professor but I learned a lot. My major is Anthropology and at first I didn't think I was cut out for the major but towards the end of the class I realized that I retained a lot of the information that was thrown at me. If you are looking for an easy A, don't take her class, but if you want to learn I recommend her.
I absolutely loved this teacher! I got a B in her class, because I did the work. I took this class along with 4 other classes, and as long as you do the work, you will pass. Her tests aren't very hard at all, since they're online open book open note. I liked her teaching style. She kept me interested throughout the whole class. I recommend her!
if she doesn't like you you won't pass. You can tell she judges a book by its cover. She very fun and knows her stuff. The class was not boring but requires a lot of work. I don't really know what to say about her she has a fun teaching style but I asked for help and got a eye-roll.
Dr. Wiewall is very knowlegable and her class is challenging. Hardworking students do well. She is quite willing to help students who want to better understand the material. She does, however sometimes drop/mumble the end of sentences because she assumes her students know where she is going, which is not always the case, so listen carefully.
Awesome teacher, very respectful of EVERY student, will never turn any one with a question away and she lights up when you ask her questions. Her class is definitely challenging for a 101 class, but seeing her enthusiasm made it worth it. Greatest teacher I've ever seen.
Dr. Wiewall was fantastic. She is the reason I am an anthro major. Her class is definitely not an easy A though. You need to work for your grade but you learn so much. She is so experienced in her field and so insightful with every topic discussed. She is reasonable and energetic. I highly recommend.
Adore Dr. Wiewall! I have a 4.0 gpa and this is not an easy class. I truly had to earn my A, but that's a good thing. This is college folks. Even though she is tough, I intend to take Anth112 with Dr. Wiewall in the fall. She is just that awesome. I recommend her to serious students.
She is very helpful and really makes you work for your grade and her test are hard but you really just have to study and you will do fine. She makes class fun and enjoyable plus it doesn't hurt that she is pretty attractive.
Dr. Wiewall has to be in the running for the best professor a AVC. It's my second time taking one of her classes. Love this lady! Highly recommend her to students. I would take all of my classes with her if she taugh them.
Wiewall is a teacher that loves what she does. If you work 40hrs,have kids and other classes I would stay AWAY! She gives the recommended amount of study material and hmwrk load is heavy. Her test are hard she prefers paragraphs on the true/false so study and have a decent word per minute. I found her very helpful. If Anthro is your major TAKE her!
This teacher funny but her tests are hard only 2 teachers teach this field n heard both are hard. Guess the only way to pass is studying
Not a professor who will let you off too easily. test are way too difficult, study guide do not help. she is a good professor but the level of skills you need for this class is very high. i don't recommend her if you want to keep your gpa high.I have never struggledn a class at avc as much as this class.
She has a wonderful personality; you will never get bored for long in her class. She has a passion for teaching which is nice for a change! However, her class is hard as hell. You take her exams on blackboard, which sucks! You have to type essay questions while the clock is ticking for the timed exam. Plan to study a lot if you want an A.
I took this class last semester. It was a big mistake, the class was so hard, the work she had us do was intense. Even with my book & i was struggling. And having to take your test online, and also timed.Ugh horrible! I would panic because i would just see the time going, and even with a study guide. I wasn't doing good.
Wonderful instructor, easy to get along with. Her material is fascinating, her lectures informative. If you love knowledge and are up to a challange then she is the instructor for you. This is not an easy A, you must participate, do your assignments and study hard for as much as I love her I find her test are brutal.
Excellent professor, knows her subject well and has a passion she passes on to her students. However, if you expect an easy A then think again. Her expectations are high and her test are tense even though they are on blackboard. Love her and will have her again for thec3rd time next semester. Lets see if I can keep up getting A's from her.
I took her honors class and it was ridiculous. Yes it's an honors class & transfer class but Darcy is confusing, unorganized & slow. She doesn't have updated grades so you find out at the end of the semester. The lecture was ok and her test are insane and they are via BB but it's timed so you can't look in the book. Very hard class.
She is passionate about what she teaches. Her tests are hard but if you study the fact that they are timed and on blackboard isn't an issue. I'm currently taking a second class with her because I enjoy the subject and I like her as a teacher. She makes it interesting. Don't expect an easy A. I had to work hard to earn that grade.
Not easy
Nice teacher but a hard grader, if u want a easy A this class isn't for you, lectures r ok but even with a study guide the exams r hard and they r on bb and r timed so know everything by heart.
It is a Friday the semester is over and all my finals are done. Well all except one. I am writing a paper and I have an online final due by tomorrow at 2 pm given out on tues of the same week. These are all for Dr. Wiewall. Having said that I love her classes I have taken three of them. If you have a desire to learn take her class.
Her class was hard. Mostly when taking the tests which do not contain the material from the study guides! The tests also contain many spelling and grammar errors. Her class would be OK if you are 18 and have nothing else to do. However if you have a job, kids, life or activities beyond eating and breathing I suggest studying anthropology elsewhere.
Shes by far one of the best professors at AVC. Her courses may be difficult, but she teaches as close to UC level as you can get at a CC. You have to WORK for your grade, and that requires you to actually learn the material, but she is very passionate and knowledgeable about the subject. Anthro majors, TAKE HER! I took all her classes and loved it!
Needs to work upon her study guides for exams, or just give study guides would be a start. Otherwise than that, she has this rare talent that most professors lack at cc's, she makes you interested in the subject that is not your major. Not only was she understanding but also very helpful and easy to talk to. Take her and learn something.
this class was hard for a non major, I toke it for a g.e. if you are looking into it as well, do not unless you have time for a lot of work, reading, and have the interest in the subject. She is really nice and will help, it was just hard to manage with a lot of other classes and my job. Only half left towards end of semester, everyone else dropped
this class is extremely hard, she is passionate about her job and explains fairly well, she is really funny and cool, but she is an extremely tough grader, her tests are timed and the study guides dont have the stuff you need, you have to know everything by heart to pass thee tests, she even grades the essays hard. i would not take her again.
I love having with Dr. Wiewall as my instructor. She is very respectful and inspirational. The work she assigns is fair. Simply archaeology, anthropology and etc... collect data so you will be doing a lot of work but it's not difficult. She is strong, ambitious, honest, kind, and funny!
She's a charismatic person and loves her field but she does not have all the skills to be a teacher. She is an extremely tough grader that nip picks everything and often makes mistakes on grading and gives you a low score. I think she needs to change her grading system . I took her 101 lecture and barely passed. I wouldn't take her again.
She basically makes u take tests which she hasn't covered thoroughly in class. Her grading system is confusing to say the least. Class started full now its down to like 12 people. Her methods are way too overcomplicated and if you didn't understand something good luck cause the exams are very confusing on stuff she never even mentioned at all.
Stay away for the sake of your GPA! You basically have to teach yourself most of the stuff. Her tests are meant to make you fail! It's like a graduate level class! She's also unorganized at times and grades very tough, people dropped like flies cause it's so hard to get a passing grade.
She is Wonderful teacher If you care about the subject. Her classes are hard but they are fair. She is enthusiastic and willing to listen and guide. Her class got me to change my major to anthropology.
Exceptional professor at a community college level. I took her 101 class in Summer of 2016 and fell in love with her enigmatic teaching style, so I added Anthropology as a second major. I have now nearly completed 6 courses with this professor and the knowledge I have obtained is priceless. Exams are not tough if you read the material.
How did I end up with a C when she made multiple errors on my graded test. Her essay portion of the test could be a whole test on itself. She is nice but her class is not for community college level.
This class was difficult. Finished with an A but it was not at all easy. Lots of work for a 1 unit class. There are 4 exams and barely any homework. You do labs in class everyday and they are always crunched for time. Don't take this class if you're not willing to work or take a hit to your GPA. Nonetheless, she was very nice, but expects a lot.
Probably my favorite teacher this semester. She gives off an air of being both a scholarly professional and a relatable and passionate human being. It is plain to see that she has an authentic love for the field she studies and she has a skill for presenting the virtue of anthropology. Lots of reading to be done which is mandatory for test taking
She is a great teacher! Everything is clearly outlined in her syllabus. As long as you follow along and go over the labs before and after class (for the test) you will do just fine. If you don't review the lab before each class it is hard to finish in the 1 hr for class. Test questions are usually in the completed labs, so go over them.
This class was hard because her style of teaching is very chat like, it doesn't feel like she explains things enough and assumes you know the material right off the bat. A lot of what was on the study guide never made it on the test and had to come back to her cause she made grading errors on it.
Shes very knowledgeable on the subject and makes the class interesting
miss a class your grade WILL drop, does not let you make anything up. nick picks every little thing on your paper, doesnt right the right answer so its useless grading if you dont know what you did wrong. expects you to come to class knowing everything. I missed two days and didnt know what to do on the test. For 1 credit its too much work.
For a 1 unit class, it sure felt like it was way more than that. She nit picks on the labs but is not consistent since other people had the same mistakes yet she gave them full credit. Her lecturing style is confusing. A lot of people dropped her class. I wish I would have taken someone else bc my gpa dropped.
yeah this was a hard class for no reason. the only reason i can think of is that she doesnt even teach she just sits there during labs and the way she grades labs is so dumb. i was in a group so we always had the SAME answers even checked with her and i would still get lower grades than my group. makes no sense. i hate monkeys now.
Darcy is a great teacher in the lab, but transferring to an online platform severely limited her teaching ability. She genuinely does care about her students and their understanding of the material, but the limitation of zoom doesn't allow her to fully teach class the way she intended. If classes continue online, there will be way more reading.
If you are lazy/don't want to work outside of class, don't bother. You are expected to come to class prepared; if you do not keep up with the reading you won't know whats going on in the lectures. Her classes are great if you plan on continuing your education past the community college level. Accessible outside of class offers extra credit.
This professor will open doors to ideas you were not familiar too. I learned a lot throughout this class. The class has a lot of assignments but because of the teaching style of this professor you won't feel them. Just be prepare to do a lot of work. Earning an A in this class does feel more satisfying because you walk out it knowing more than most
The overall class was new but it was quite informative. The class really does breakdown the relationship between Latin America and the Caribbean. It introduces essential elements that made up LAC and also how its relationship with the U.S. has affected it. It's a great class to take. Not a lot of assignments I would say and make sure to read.
Dr. Wiewall is one of the best prof. and mentors I've had! Make sure you put in effort with any course you take with her- do the readings, study, and participate in class and you'll do well. She can be a tough grader but isn't unfair. Has great stories during lecture. She is very caring and passionate about Anthro. and is available for students.
For a 1 unit class she gives way too much work. It's ridiculous. She does not teach on zoom, just puts us in breakout rooms to do the labs. Grades and nit picks at everything but with no explanation. I regret taking this lab deeply. Don't like her at all.
Seriously the hardest class I have ever taken, especially for a 101 class. So much homework, teacher was nice but the reading and assignments were way too much. I had A's in all of my other classes except for this one.
I took her online lab course. There are a LOT of assignments, way too many for a 1 credit class. Very difficult grader. Amazing lectures, makes the topic interesting. Difficult class. Make sure you attend every lecture or the labs are difficult to complete.
Professor Wiewall was always available for extra help with the labs. There were about 2 labs to be completed each week, 4 exams, and a zoo project (done online bc of covid). She was always thorough in her explanations and provided any resources necessary for the labs. Very nice teacher as well, was always willing to answer any questions.
I took this class as an honors option and there is definitely a lot of homework, even for the students taking it as a regular course. We learn a lot, but it is difficult to get good grades because she is an extremely tough grader. If you do all the readings (which is a lot), you will be fine but you will struggle if you don't.
Nice Professor to talk to. Clear Grading on HW none. Feedback on HW none. Miss Class can't get credit for the day or that lab. No exceptions, even for legitimate reasons. Absolute Tough Grader. A lot of work for just one credit partner course. Not flexible to work with to make up missed time or low HW scores. Limited EC options available.
Professor Wiewall is an amazing professor. I will say you will need to get ready to read and write quite a bit because she does in class discussion on various articles. However, these articles are really interesting and you would want to talk about them. She will even talk about some stories she has on her journeys around the world!!!
Ok professor but she really likes to talk about her personal life, theres lots of homework, and lots of lab work that is tough to get through; gets old really fast. Skip and take someone else if you get the chance.
I took her for anthro and lab as well, and honestly, it was a stressful and tiring experience. Her class is lecture heavy, attendance is mandatory for points, and she's very picky when it comes to homework. I disliked her grading and the intense amount of work she gave. She's very knowledgeable, but I would definitely recommend another professor.
Great professor, very friendly and will find ways to help accommodate you, if you need the assistance. Lecture heavy, just follow along and take notes. 3 main exams and 1 final 2500 word research paper at the end of the semester with a 10 minute presentation. Lots of reading and video watching, for the weekly assignments. Hard class but it was fun!
Great and inspiring person. However, she assigns an overwhelming workload to the point where you can't even feel inspired by the subject because of the excessive amount she assigns and expects of us. I don't know how her expectations are even allowed. Although I got A's in this course before dropping, I couldn't handle it.
Holy moly guacamole...
