This guy is very entertaining. His lectures are all over the place but he makes the dumbest jokes, laughs at the stupidest things, and repeats words over and over again, asking if you need him to write it on the board.
Test questions are unclear/refuses to negociate with them. i.e. if 25/30 get the question wrong he doesn't make good and give credit. Has the dumbest laugh and laughs at stupid things DON'T ****HIM OFF. He snaps at the smallest things sometimes. Like asking if were having a lecture after the exam
Ok. Plays with his hair. Tells lame jokes. Drinks water like a camel. Is unclear on tests....your answer could be word for word in the book and he'll still say your wrong. Does 'snap' at small things. Married to department head Filison, so don't bother complaining.
This guy is a horrible teacher...and you cannot complain because the department head is his wife so it gets nowhere...
Really not that bad. Can offend easliy but its good overal. He's an aquired taste.
Seemed nice at the beginning but snaps easily. Is very un-clear as to what he is looking for, and even more unclear when you try to get help.
He was the only one teaching Soc Methods 2, so I got stuck with him. Don't take him...honestly...if you can help it. He's always right! (haha)
Crazy. Grades don't matter. Lectures are all over the place. Stupid jokes. Married to the dept. head. you will pretty much get a B no matter what.
hi is soooooooo hot and cute. he can do anything and help you with anything even when you don't need it. i adore him as a teacher.
Have you ever seen the television show "The Twilight Zone"? Take this class with Dr. Niklas and you'll think you're actually there. Discussions are all over the place and are very unclear. Besides his mood swings and random outbursts, his classes are pretty entertaining. No mid-term or final; just a few short papers. Don't worry about grades.
Mot boring, weird, and unclear class I ever had. Don't worry about grades as long as u go to class!
Very interesting class. Professor is very knowledgable, but his antics in class are weird. Uncalled for outbursts happen regularily. If he likes you, he is real cool with you, but if you are not liked by him, it is obvious. Tests are usually "take home", and reports are not difficult.
****... He is intelligent and knows what he is talking about the few times he talks about subject matter. Other than that he does not teach you learn nothing and he has favorites if your not one and he doesnt know your name your looking at a F or C if he knows you a B and if he likes you an A. Thats it. Wouldnt suggest taking him
When you see his name keep going because your only sinking your own ship by taking him. Not only do you not learn anything, but everyone and everything including the book is wrong so dont bother buying it. But if your in this to see a circus you have come to the right place, so buy your ticket, get some pop-corn sit back and (dont) enjoy the ride.
Not as bad as I imagined. Attendance is a must & never leave during break! He is a little hard to understand but if you show up and pay attention, anyone can pass his class. He never uses the book and references movies a lot. I would take another class with him.
If you see his name, keep going. Difficult to understand, boring lectures, intelligent but looks down upon students. If you have an opinion, don't speak it (especially if it is different than his). If you answer a question wrong, he will roll his eyes and make fun of you. He speaks to students as if they are morons! Avoid at all cost!!
IDK what people are talking about his class is fun. He keeps people on their feet making sure your awake, says funny**** on occasion. Ive taken him for soc of money and economic exchange and Corrections and will continue to take him. He doesnt pick on girls so girls are str8 but guys if he dont like you your a target but hes funny gr8 teacher
Have you ever seen an introduction from Rod Sterling from the Twilight Zone, its kind of like that except with a German accent. He is funny, very smart man but he does not like dissention. Dont worry if you fail every quiz you still got a B. So grab the popcorn sit back and let the good times roll.
Intelligent man but looks down at his students. He is out in left field when everyone of his students is already leaving the grandstands. He could probably have a conversation with himself. Easy class tough to sit through.
THIS GUY IS AWSOME BUT COMPLETLY OFF HIS ROCKER..go to EVERY CLASS and make sure he knows u and ur set with a B if he likes you...he's likely to offend u at least once during the sem. but he offends every 1 so deal i failed nearly every quiz & went to 1/2 of his classes plastered, AND STILL EARNED A B!! "HA-HA-HA, you follow me roughly? or not?"
AWFUL, unless you need his class for a requirement, avoid for any electives! Yeah, if you show up and smile you can get a B or higher but it's painful and you don't learn anything. Such a waste of my time and money. The only plus side was that you don't use the book and you can fail all the quizzes (literally) and still pass.
Horrible Teacher. You learn absolutely nothing from the class, but its an easy A or B. You must show up to every class(missing 1 or 2 is OK) and you can fail everything else and still get a decent grade. All he cares about is attendance. He spends a lot of time blabbering about trivial knowledge, not much time on the actual subject.
he's a terrible professor, he makes no sense what so ever. Thanks to him i learned nothing in his class. this was a core class in my major. this is terrible!!!
I feel as though Prof Niklas has good intentions and does care for his students but regardless very offensive, definitely looks down upon students and makes hurtful jokes about some. Hard to really learn anything in his class, don't bother expressing your thoughts or opinions, he wont care but as long as you go to every class you'll get a B
You need to understand him or he's not worth taking. Much of what he says can be taken as trivial knowledge and misguided blabber but there is always a point in what he says. If you don't have the intellect and maturity to understand his attitude, he'll seem like nothing more than a joke, but that's a failure on your own regard rather than his.
Dr. Niklas is intelligent, witty and respectful. His expectations are reasonable for a 400 level class (maybe even a bit low). He wants his students to understand the material, and does get frustrated when he can tell no one is doing the work. If you want to learn something worthwhile, take his class. If not... why are you in college?
Snaps into a rage often and for no reason, indicating his lack of self-confidence and self control. Scary. Should not be teaching. Doesn't know what he's talking about in this class. Arrogant without cause. Overall a creep. Avoid him at all costs, he's a waste of your tuition dollars.
Prof Niklas is awesome. Go to class, pay attention, and take notes.. pretty cut an dry. Don't show up late or leave early- he notices, and holds a grudge. Funny as hell and keeps you awake. Easy to do well if you show up and put in minimal effort.
Professor Niklas is awesome. He does place a major emphasis on attendance and rightfully so. You need to attend to learn. His lectures are interesting and I would definitely take him again.
Stereotypical German, harsh sense of humor, talks down to the class. That said, just listen to him and take good notes, on the tests just regurgitate what he said in class because everything he said is correct.
Dr. Niklas is great. He wants you to learn and actually condenses the book down into written text that he posts on black board. He does stress attendance, but why would you not attend class. Hello you're paying for it.
shame on you students who don't appreciate prof. niklas! his class was an easy A, you just have to pay attention. and it's well worth it to pay attention anyway because he is HILARIOUS. my favorite professor at RIC
This guy is the man. You can learn a lot if you listen to him. Yeah he may be hard to understand and require attendance but he is really nice. Just show up to class and you'll get a B
Dont piss him off and go to everyclass and you'll get a B
He is not a bad professor to take. Pay attention to what he says in class & you will pass the quizzes with flying colors. You barely use the book but if you actually want to learn something, buy it and read it; you will end up teaching yourself. Attendance is a must & you will pass this class.
Good professor; speaks with authority which is good. If you are easily offended, he may offend you. But on that same note, if you are easily offended, spend some time in the real world. if you are taking the class at a once a week interval, it can drag, but is generally interesting. No papers, no homework, never studied, got a B.
Great professor. Just show up, pay attention, hand in your papers on time and you'll do fine. He's very smart and relates his lectures to real life. I took a lot away from his class and honestly feel like i learned a lot. One of my favorite classes I've taken.
Just go to every class and you will get a B. Participate with something relevant to show that you checked blackboard every once in a while and you will get an A. It's simple. Plus he's just an awesome character.
Not a fan. People here seem to love him but I find him to be erratic and incredibly difficult to follow. Unclear. No structure. Not learning anything. No idea what his expectations are. Sure, I may end up with a decent grade, but I will have zero clue as to how I got it. Not an enjoyable experience. Worst class I've ever had.
Prof. Niklas was the toughest, most unclear professor I've ever had. there was no syllabus. The entire semester was like playing charades, him yelling erratically and I didn't get anything out of the course, if you have him, show up as much as possible, hand in papers, do your best. GOOD LUCK!
Not sure how to word this, but Professor Niklas is quite possible completely out of touch with this generation. This class Sociology of Money was more like a lesson about how dumb we are because we don't know the details of historical events in other countries, or History in general. Expect a B at best!
If you need organization & clarity, AVOID at all cost
This guy was the complete worst professor I have ever had at RIC. Most of the time he talks about nonsense, he even flips out at you if you leave class early. This guy is rude, arrogant, disorganized, and grunts to himself when hes grading papers. Honestly, if you need to take this professor by all means do what you can but if not, DON'T!
Avoid avoid
So attendance is a must, just don't take his class if you are going to miss it. And its not hard to get an A in the class, you just have to do your part! Read his lectures on Blackboard, and really learn it, and the tests always match his lectures! The only people who complainfail are the ones who never show up, and didn't do the reading.
I took this professor many years ago. This is the first time that I have ever rated a professor on this site and it will be my last. He was extremely volatile and unkind. He would fly off the handle at students who asked for clarification. The entire class was terrified of him. And I got an A in his class, so I'm not bitter over the grade.
Never skip class. Also, he loves when people participate. If you do not like getting "picked on" then don't take him - otherwise he is the funniest professor I ever had. If you pay attention in class the quizzes shouldn't be too bad and you will get decent grades on papers if you keep them short and make good points with good grammar.
Do not take this class unless you absolutely have to. I got a B- even though I never got higher than a 50% on any paper or test. I learned nothing. Worst course I have ever taken. I'm a straight A student and couldn't understand him. It's not worth the credit.
BEST ADVICE: keep your short essays very short. A page or less than a page TOPS! He doesn't like or even reads long papers. He'll correct 3 lines and give you a C. If you want a B, come to class EVERYDAY and participate. If you want an A, good luck. Other than that, he's really funny and ridiculously smart but vague. wouldn't take him again.
He is very intelligent and has a vast array of knowledge. He is pretty funny, but can sometimes be hard to follow. 4 to 5 quizzes, and a few homework assignments. Great class to take. Great guy.
One of my best professors at RIC. Attend his class, study for quizzes, and PLEASE have the respect to keep your phone off. Give respect, you get respect !!!
Do yourself a favor and don't take any of his classes! He's rude, unprofessional, and completely unclear. I didn't understand any of his handouts or lectures and his quizzes are impossible! I didn't learn a single thing in his class! I have a 3.8 gpa and I'm not afraid to work hard but I found his class impossible.
Come to class or you might get an F next to your name when he checks attendance. All of his lectures/handouts are on blackboard and thats where all the answers to the quizzes are from but handouts are complex/difficult to understand. Didn't really learn anything at all Just show up do the quizzes/homework and you're good. I'd avoid him altogether.
Can't tell if he's bonkers, or a genius, or maybe both. Extremely hard quizzes (people have gotten 1/10). Sort of tough essays due every few weeks. Cares a lot about attendance. Do not even register for his course if you think you may miss one class. You will get reprimanded if you do. His lectures are crazy, but he's a nice guy ultimately.
He is a great professor. Just go to class and do the assignment and you will do great.
All you have to do is show up and take the quizzes and you pass. But that's the catch, you HAVE to show up to class. If you skip your grade will suffer. Don't worry about your test grades, they don't matter. Bottom line, SHOW UP TO CLASS.
All Professor Niklas asks of you is to attend all the classes and participate. We had 5 quizzes all semester but they don't actually count. Just show up, do the 3 homework assignments and participate. Follow that and you get an A
The only class at RIC that I felt I learned new things. Quizzes are hard. Easy to get a B on essays. His lectures were scattered all over the place, but in retrospect, I had a good time and I felt like I actually learned something new once it ended. He keeps you every class until the final second, and expects 100% attendance.
Attend every class and attempt to engage and participate. Show an effort and Prof Niklas will appreciate it. There are a few quizzes throughout the semester and very few homework assignments. He spends basically every class lecturing and wants his students involved all the time. I definitely learned a lot in this course.
He will never let you go early. You can't miss a single class or he'll never let you live it down. You will fail every quiz and only get a B on every essay, but he'll end up giving you a B+ for the semester. You'll get an A for the semester if you participate a lot. Show up, pay attention, act interested, and you'll be fine. He's entertaining.
HIS CLASS SUCKS!!! DO NOT TAKE!!!
Worst professor at RIC. Is unclear, embarrasses students, and is all over the place. He doesn't care if you have a doctors note, if you miss a class he gives you an "F" for the day. I never know what this guy is talking about, he doesn't speak English very well and if there is a miscommunication, it is your fault. I do not recommend!
His explanation of when things are due is ineffective as is how he explains what you should read for the homework. Grading is poorly done. He's often degrading towards students. If you don't understand something he pokes fun at that and rarely ever answers your question to the point that you have to lie and say you understand now. Heavy Accent.
Worst teacher Ive ever had. So rude when you ask questions. Singles out students in front of whole class. Very unprofessional.
Rude. Dont bother with this guy.
I put up my most confident and best work and I continued to get C's on assignments when I thought I covered his requirements. He is very specific with his requirements but also vague at the same time when you ask for him to explain it more.
Professor Niklas is a very nice guy, and extremely intelligent. I enjoyed attending his class. However, during his course, I feel as though no matter how hard I tried on his assignments, I would always get the same grade, and never received sufficient feedback as to what I did wrong.
Had to drop his Soc 400 class. He has specific expectations for his students but doesn't actually state what they are. His instructions are very vague, yet he grades very strictly. His syllabus doesn't have any due dates listed, nor does it break down how you will be graded. My experience in his class was very frustrating
The worst teacher I've ever had at RIC, don't take any classes with him. No feedback on assignments, and long winded lectures not relating to content.
Prof. Niklas is wildly out of touch and often makes off color remarks or goes off on random tangents ranging from people not being able to use the bathroom to classes completely off topic from what were supposed to be learning. Furthermore, he gets wicked defensive if you call him out on anything, specifically is overly vague open end assessments.
Extremely intelligent person, but not a good professor. He gives vague instructions but is a very critical grader. He also does not provide any feedback. In class the lectures he gives don't really provide any info for the assignments you will be doing. Try to participate in class. Always do all the assignments, one zero can cause you to fail.
His lectures are boring and dont really help with assignments most of the time. He grades a little weird and makes smart remarks sometimes that might make you feel singled out but as long as you show up to class and do your assignments to the best of your ability you will be able to pass the course.
Clearly has knowledge on the material he teaches, but spends his time going on tangents and singling out students instead. He's on a power trip and takes pride in marking students absent for going to the bathroom, refuses to give students full credit on their assignments, and will never tell you what you did wrong if you want to improve your grade
Nothing but attendance matters. His textbooks are not worth buying. Just show up and you will past do not miss any classes.
His blackboard page is very disorganized and doesn't have anything separated into folders for example week 1, week 2 etc. He says the the quizzes have answers in the study guide but only the first quiz did. His questions in class are confusing and make no sense he doesn't explain concepts clearly. He tells students to drop the class
This professor has a very distinct style of teaching. He can be difficult to understand, so pay attention, and if you don't understand something, asking clarifying questions in class will not only help your understanding, it will improve the class participation portion of your grade. V. Interesting material. Do all homework and quizzes. No final.
Professor Niklas will not be everyone's cup of tea. He sometimes comes off a bit dry. I really enjoyed that there were no official due dates. Overall he gives you everything you need to be successful in the course but it will require reading thru his poorly organized notes. Attendance and participation seemed to be the most important.
The worst professor I had at this school. What he teaches could sound interesting, but he ruins it. The way he teaches is awful, really sounds like he is getting ideas out of thin air, and is just improving the entire class. Says quizzes are based off the readings, ya right. Goes off on random tangents, really questioning how RIC hired him
I can understand the negative comments although my experience with this professor was great ! he is very funny and smart. He goes off on random tangents although it can be very interesting. All of the work comes from his readings, long lectures and no group work if anyone is worried about that. Take notes and you will pass, only advice I can give.
I can understand the comments. He talks about the most random things sometimes. He takes attendance and requires participation. Now having said that, the guy is very caring and understanding. He'll bump your grade just for showing effort. Definitely worth taking if you can pay attention and take notes. Got a B+... dont know how but i did lol.
A true master of his craft, a master of pulling things out of his butt. He is by far the most disorganized professor I have ever encountered at this school. Sloppy would be a compliment when talking about his class.
i definitely do NOT recommend. Avoid classes with him as the professor.
I had Professor Niklas in 2024. I remember the quizzes and lectures not matching up, almost everyone in the class failing, and he definitely was not afraid to share his (right-leaning and slightly bigoted) opinions... I had a D until the last week of classes. I emailed him saying that I really tried my best, and he bumped my grade to a B. lol...
