she makes everything hell

I expected lab to be exciting,to learn but NO the class consist of TAs strictly reading instructions from Daria. You CANNOT ask questions,do not expect help.Typical lab=complete prelab, inclass quiz, prelecture, then actual lab, turn in EVERYTHING besides postlab questions. And again,DO NOT EXPECT HELP. Complete waste of time, and I LIKE to LEARN!!
At the beginning, the lab seemed to be pretty tough because it was different than other labs I took, but with time it got easier. My TA was very helpful as was Daria. I went to her office few times and she was more than helpful. Although it was tough at the beginning, I feel like I really learned how to be independent and write good lab reports.
not fun, waste of time. the only thing you will probably learn is how to write a lab report....THATS ALL. Good luck
This class was tough but it taught discipline and responsibility. If you do what you are supposed to, you do not have to worry. You do learn how to write a good lab report and how to use concepts you learn in chem lecture :). Overall I was very happy with this class!
Overall, I enjoyed my Chem Lab course. My TA was Nina and she is very nice and willing to help as much as she is allowed to. I did not really interact with Daria, but when I went to her office hours once, she was willing to help me as well. I have learned a lot in this class and I enjoyed it much more than my Chem lecture class.
HORRIBLE LAB COORDINATOR!
Daria really isnt as bad as everyone makes her out to be.. If you do the work with full effort and go for extra help, Chem Lab is not bad.
She is so much better 2nd semester of Gen Chem. She is still a ****, but I think she is growing a heart. She actually gives very helpful advise on the pre-lab slides. SOme equations on the slides you wont use so don't think you need them all for the pre-lab calculation. For the tests, know the labs and calc, and post lab quest. backwards and forwar
Second semester of Gen Chem is so much better. By the time you make to the second semester, you finally get the idea how to study and how to write good lab reports. I would encourage everyone to go talk to Daria for any issues they may have. She is super helpful and nice. In my opinion, the lab experience a lot depends on your TA.
This class has taught me soooo much. Best advice: grow up and stop complaining and college will be a breeze. As long as you study and prepare yourself for each lab, you will be fine.
Hard class where you actually learn a lot. You need to be on top of your things early on. If you need help, go to office hours. There are plenty and TAs help you get on the right track. Daria is nothing but great. Your entire lab experience depends on your TA. Overall, I liked this class because it was a good wake up call that I am in COLLEGE!
She started out as a monster but things got better. This is a very challenging course and gets a ton of premed students to drop. Very possible to make an A, but for a 1 credit hour class you will have to put more time and effort into it than you do your other 3 and 4 credit hour class...oh and by the way don't break any glass in lab or else!!!!....
Challenging class but you learn soooooo muchhhhh. Daria is not but amazing. Very approachable, very helpful. I have e-mailed her so many times with questions, went and talked to her and I think that she is beyond helpful. Anyone who takes this class will come out learning a lot.
This class has taught me a lot about college. I have learned a lot from it. Your experience in lab depends simply on your TA. Daria has been nothing but helpful. She is very approachable, however keep in mind people how many students she has and how many of these students ask same Qs over and over again. As I have said already, good class.
I took this class last year and have to admit that it prepared me so well for organic. Yes it was hard and yes there were times where I would blame everyone including Daria :-) but my self. It took some time for me to get my act together and I am so glad that I did otherwise I am not sure how I would be surviving Organic.
This is the single class that prevented me from getting a 4.0 my freshman year. I ended up with a 3.96. If you're a Med Scholar, watch out! Don't screw up in lab or you will pay the price.
If you are a pre-med, dont take this class. this class is not worth for a one credit class because you have to work your heart out sometimes. also it teaches you nothing except how to write a lab report and initial and date when ever you screw up in a write up
The class isn't that hard. It all depends on who is your grader. DO REGRADES! They will pay off for the graders idiocy. Check your stuff every time you get it back and complain when they are unfair. It will pay off. Be prepared and it will be easy.
Those of you who are complaining about how much time you are spending for a 1 credit hour class, wait until you take Organic. People you are in college and you need to grow up. Yes the class is tough but you learn so much. You will definitely learn how to write a good lab report so that when you get to Organic you have that skill down.
Class is a lot of work, but it is possible to get an A. Make sure you are prepared before the lab, and be very careful when writing the lab report. Honestly, the TA is who you work with more than Daria. But Daria was very informative around the tests.
To all those who said she was "approachable". No, she's not. The class itself is fine, but her tests are stupid and pointless, covering pointless minutia. Your experience really depends on your TA.
Grades depend on two things: TA's helpfulness 15%, and Preparedness 85%. Yes, you will spend more time on this class than probably anything else, but if you don't, you will not get a good grade. period. Ask around about general content on tests to avoid getting blindsided by completely trivial information. Don't complain, it won't get any easier.
Daria honestly doesn't give a Bunsen burner on whether or not you fail her course. You'll spend more time on this 1 credit course than on some of your 3 credit courses. Do you learn? Yes however she could make the process less similar to hell...
This class has taught me so much. Daria is nothing but helpful every time I had contact with her. She responds to e-mails quickly unlike some professors. I disagree that the exams are pointless. They cover everything off of power point presentations and material covered in the labs. The overall experience depends on your TA.
Daria's the lab COORDINATOR; her job isn't to lecture or affect your self-esteem. Initially intimidating, but very sweet/supportive. Students hate her for the same reason I love her: she sets high standards and holds you to them. W/out question, chem Labs are labor intensive & your TA is crucial. Expect tricky exams w/ ridiculus Qs- its a weedout
Your lab TA essentially dictates your experience in lab. Many are foreign, although mine was Chinese and I loved him. For exams, though, make sure you know EVERY detail. Work hard throughout the semester, and the pressure of the exams will be relieved.Study hard for the safety quiz; it's a great buffer to your grade and very easy to study for.
Your performance on the class depends on the TA's office hours that you visit. The key to getting an A is being VERY prepared- with calculations for an in lab, and memorizing the most irrelevant details for the exam. Prepare to put in a lot of time for the class, follow directions down to a t, and not argue with the lab coordinator.
This class has been the best wake up call that I am in college. Few times I went directly to Daria with questions and she was beyond helpful. I was not a huge fan of my TA though. Standards for the class are hard but hey we all can be going to an easier school right? Hopefully it will mean something one day when we show up with a SLU diploma.
There is nothing to be learned in this class. You have to come in already knowing everything. She is only the coordinator. Her TA's do more than her. Even then her TA's aren't allowed to answer any of your questions. So you better learn all the equations before ever stepping foot into her class.
She is unnecessarily mean and unhelpful. You have to already know everything about the lab on your own before coming to class. There is no help on what to do or how to find answers. She doesn't allow us to talk to each other or the TAs to answer questions. She won't even create enough lab times to fit most of the students.
On the first day she said to email through Blackboard because she wasn't going to respond to her SLU email address. Well she didn't respond to her Blackboard email either because I emailed her and her TAs multiple times with no response. I went to her Office Hours 5 times and saw her once. If you have to take a science with lab take Bio or Physics.
She is the worst teacher/person you will ever meet. Chem Lab is the worst experience of my life. NEVER TAKE IT! She is rude and not to mention disrespectful to everyone. She thinks she is special, but everyone hates her. She takes the most useless points off for everything and you better hope you can pull of a B in the class.
Daria is horrible person and teacher. She tries her hardest to make her class the worst experience of your life. I'm not kidding. Her attitude needs a serious adjustment, bc chem lab is not that important...it's one creidt hour, but you will spend about 8 hours a week dealing with it, so Daria and her goons can belittle the work in a flash.
This class is amazing. It is so structured. Everything is spelled out clearly. Just follow the instructions. Each week there are several office hours and TAs are super helpful. Daria has also been super helpful when I went to see her. I do have to admit that the class is tough but it is menagable.
This class is amazing. Most of the TAs are amazing and super helpful. Whenever I interacted with Daria she also was super helpful. I currently have an A but know that bunch of students are struggling. I guess not everyone is met to have an A in every class.
I hate her with a passion. And it is ok since she hates every one of her students as well. Taking this class is like getting hit across the face with a giant wet fish; the still will be there for a while and you will be so disappointed because you cant eat the fish since Daria will immediately take it away cuz it is hers and she hates you.
I love this class. I have learned so much from it including discipline. I definitely needed a wake up call that I am in college and for that I have to be thankful. Daria is nothing but amazing. For those of you who don't like her, get a life, you don't even interact with her but your TA. Instead of complaining, you should sit down and study
Best way to sum Daria up: Think about the worst teacher or professor that you ever had. Now multiply that by 1000 and you get Daria.
The class isn't extremely difficult, the material is just very specific. She's really clear in how she wants things to be done, it's up to you though to remember all the tiniest details.
TAs are very good, they are very helpful! However, you may never see Daria for the whole semester, she always says she is very busy, busy and busy. She likes take points from your report, she's very mean ! I met her for one time, she's so arrogant that I can't bear it!
Amazing class. TAs are awesome. Daria is super helpful. I met with her once. Before meeting her I heard all of these negative stories about her and they are so incorrect. She is super helpful and nice. This class does have high standards however it is manageable to get an A.
Alright, how do I word this? Oh, that's right. This woman is horrible. She obviously knows her Chemistry pretty well, but that doesn't make up for her propensity for making this lab a living hell. I know it teaches us to write good lab reports, but they could have made the learning curve a bit less steep. It's a 1 credit hour course.
ChemLab is pretty awful. Extremely, extremely time consuming (it's a 1 hour course that takes up more time than a 3 hour course). Daria isn't so awful though. She is understanding but has to be strict if she's going to properly run an entire lab. Fell a couple points short of an A and she determines the cutoffs at the end of the year, got rounded u
Mean.
A venomous witch with a bloodthirsty red pen who hides away in her secret lair at all times waiting to take points off of your chemistry labs. Off the bat, you will be frustrated with her. Over the course of the class, she will find more ways to take off points on your lab, so take her notes and get more particular every lab. Read the slides.
The problem with chem lab is that you do NOT know exactly what the graders will want. Prepare a checklist and go through it for every lab to make sure you have everything technical (sig figs, end line date and initial) but don't be surprised if you still get a B on your labs for things they never told you were necessary.
The lab is difficult. Many times, you will be returned your lab report that has point marked off for something that was not specified in weeks past or that you have been doing in every lab report up to that point. The grades were incredibly inconsistent. Additionally, some of the points taken off are pretty ridiculous (small smudges, bold writing).
-Too many rules: make a mistake, u must cross out w/1 line, initial/date,why? -u dont learn how to do certain in-lab problems but they are harshly graded. daria does not teach, her ta's do, so get a good one
Your better off taking Chaos Theory math with how unfair grades are, don't expect to learn anything and be sure to study 4 hours a week for 1 credit hour. Her first exam seemed super easy...took off points for random stupid stuff. Her second test was like the beginning scene of Saving Private Ryan, and you are an American soldier.
Gave tests over material that hadn't even been covered in the Chemistry Lecture class yet. This Chem Lab is supposed to go along with what is taught in Chem lab, but does not. Very poor rating for a poor class with a poor correlation to the Lecture.
Labs will often cover material that hasn't been covered in class yet, with the lab itself providing very little explanation of the concepts being covered. The graders are inconsistent at best, expect your lab grades to fluctuate from the A to C range. The tests often have questions irrelevant to material covered in class.
I enjoyed chem lab. People don't realize that this course has over 700 students and is meant to weed people out. I did very well in the lab even after dropping the lecture. Daria was at both of my tests and seemed to be a very nice lady. If you prepare yourself prior to the lab you'll be fine. Just don't take it at 8 am.
Awful. The labs cover material that you haven't covered in class yet. Daria is virtually unreachable. The TA's don't understand the material. The information in the manual isn't complete. You lose points for literally everything. The tests are legitimately brutal. The entire chemistry lab department needs to go under serious investigation.
Good class. Taught me how to be responsible, organized.
Amazing class. Ten times better than Bio lab. My TA was awesome. Did not interact with Daria a whole lot but when I did, she was super nice and helpful.
Loved this class. My TA was great. Daria was very helpful and very nice. The class is challenging but you do learn a lot. Time management is the key.
Alright, here's the deal. Chem Lab is hard. It's supposed to be difficult. Just make sure you know the backgrounds, calculations, and post-labs for the exams and you're good. For the actual pre and in-labs...good luck. Points will be taken off for basically anything. TAs are helpful...sorta
Awesome class. I loved my TA. Going to office hours really helped. Daria was helpful when I needed her help.
Tough class. You do learn a lot. Everyone is tough at the beginning but they do loosen up. Daria was very helpful. Advice: do not wait few days before the exams to study for it.
I would never recommend Daria to anyone taking a Chemistry class. Yes she knows everything about Chemistry, but she does not explain it to you as though you are new to the subject. I got a B by teaching myself the entire book. However, you need to still show up to class because of Pop quizzes. If you do not like chem, do not take her.
Chem101 was really good. Daria did a great job. She is very nice and helpful. I went to her office hours several times. I have heard so many negative stories about Daria prior to this class. She is beyond nice and helpful.
Prior to taking this class I heard Daria was really intimidating and awful. I absolutely would recommend her to anyone. Her class was not easy but as long as you do the suggested problems its easy to get an A. She is really helpful and I would recommend going her office hours.
Way too much work for 1 credit hour. Attending TA help sessions is a must otherwise you will not do well. Be prepared to take this class seriously from day 1 or early labs will ruin your grade for the semester. The exams are minimally unfair and really pretty easy. Try not to take on Tuesday as you'll have more chances to go to office hours.
Congrats! You've entered hell! This is the class where you either know it or not. However, it's better not to be in the latter. The notes are given straight from the book but she simplifies some tough concepts in class. Oh another thing: GO TO CLASS. She'll give out bonus points like it's no ones business! So yeah she's tough, but that whipped me up into shape for Chem 163 & 165. So if you want to discipline yourself. She's the one for you
Tough class. Good wake up call. Instructor was very nice. Helpful when I need help. Did a good job explaining concepts. First exam was a shocker for me however that low grade was a wake up call. Thanks to Daria for pushing us and motivating to do problems. It really helped. Strongly recommend her.
The purpose of this class at SLU seems to be to get students to drop out of pre med, which is understandable because nearly half of my freshmen class stated they were pre med. I got an A- and my roommate got an A in the class so it is possible.
Definitely a weeder class. Be prepared to study a lot for only a one credit hour class. A lot of times, there are things in lab which don't correlate with lecture. Come to lab prepared or else it is torture. Labs are very rigidly structured, which some people like but personally all I learn from this class is how to do calculations.
A ton of work for a simple one credit hour lab. The material goes fast and does not always make sense. She is not the approachable type and is overly rigid towards students. But since gen chem lab is unavoidable try hard and hope for the best.
Worst freshmen premed science class. Be prepared to put in WAY more work than what should be required for a 1 credit course. The exams vary in difficulty but expect at least one of them to be awful. The graders for lab are also highly inconsistent. However, going to office hours helps somewhat.
Hard class. Learned a lot though. Office hours are very helpful. My TA was good. What helped is preparing myself a lot each week for the lab. Daria was very fair. She is definitely not the bubbly type but very nice and helpful when I needed her assistance.
She definitely knows what she's talking about but she doesn't take time to explain; which is frustrating since I took basic chem. She can be very nice but she's been on probation a few times now. Tests are difficult and the grading is harsh.
Labs are highly rigid in structure. Hours of work daily are to be put in for a measly 1 credit hour class. Shall I continue? An A/B is doable, but General Chemistry Laboratory I should NOT be so harsh and tormenting. Pre-med/science students, prepare yourselves...
Chem Lab is a very challenging, time consuming class. Many hours of prep each week for lab are needed. Office hours are extremely helpful as they explain the lab and calculations that go along with it. DO NOT take this class as a joke from the start. Getting an A is possible but quite the challenge.
I hate to give anyone a bad rating but this lab was torture. I spend hours outside of lab to the detriment of my other classes. Daria seemed to enjoy the pain inflicted on the students and not interested in their successful learning. The TAs seemed to have Stockholm syndrome. It's unfortunate because the other profs at SLU have been great.
Chem lab requires lots and lots and lots of work but if you're willing to work for it, an A is do-able. Be super prepared for lab and study like crazy for exams
Don't recomment to take her class. she is the worst instructor in the world.. Too much work for only 1 credit hour and she expect you to know everything like someone who has graduated with a master in CHEM. Hardest class i have ever taken
Hardest class I've ever taken. One hour credit course with at least 3 - 4 hours of work. Its the equivalent of beating students into a coma to teach them self defense. The class asks for things that some graduate students might not be able to do. Only class I've had at SLU that I think should be completely revised and the curriculum changed.
Daria doesn't teach the class, she just designs it and Graduate TA's administer the lab. The experiments are not hard to do, but the documentation and grading is a royal pain. Points are taken off for neatness and write-overs. Talk to other students who have taken the class. Will make you work far more than the one credit hour it is worth.
I have never actually seen this professor considering she doesn't actually teach anything. She only designs preposterous labs with an insane grading rubric. I did not actually learn anything from this class other than to BS my way through tough assignments. If you need to learn how to do that, this class is perfect for you. If not, don't take it
never ever had a instructor like this. horrible. cant pass. failed. made me cry several times. dropped class because of this lab
Labs are strict, that is their nature, and this is something students must get over. There are a lot of rules associated with chem lab but once you get them all down the content of the labs is not actually difficult if you keep up and formatting is the only real issue. I got an A after getting the hang of it, just do not skip class or show up late.
Extremely tough grader. Would lose points on labs for penmanship and technicalities more so than on my calculations. The tests were absurd and barely relevant to what we did in class.
Smart lady but expects for you to already know the info and she just skims through it. Unreasonable grader.
Very dry teacher and unoriginal. She is rarely prepared for class and it seems like she doesn't even read her own ppts before class. Structure of the class as a whole is poor. Usually 20 minutes of class will be spent lecturing the class how you are a child and she treats you that way. Chemistry department of SLU should be embarrassed...
Chem 1115 lab was one of the least stressful courses in my schedule. It's my understanding that this course used to be structured very different. The grading is tough but after 2 or 3 labs you get the hang of it and with a bit of effort an A is easily achieved. Watch the Tegrity videos, be familiar with the lab, and ask your TA for help if needed.
You can for sure get an A in this class. Labs are hard- and if you're taking this that means you're probably pre-med SO THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE AND YOU NEED TO GET OVER IT. I made the mistake the first couple labs of not watching Tegrity, and I got C's on my first two labs. I started watching Tegrity and asking question and have only gotten A's.
Chem lab is mostly for PreMed students, it's supposed to be difficult. Although it is a one hour credit, you will put in at least 3 hours of work a week on a lab. You have 9 labs, worst grade is dropped. If you watch tegrity the lab is easy. Lowest grade received was a C+ then high B's and A's on the rest. Read prelab and watch tegrity.
Chem lab is really just a nuisance with Daria at SLU. Having also experienced chem lab at a different institution, I can say that a lot of what Daria requires is unnecessary and a waste of students' time. Also, I thought the labs could have been a lot more relevant to the lecture. Be prepared for the lab practical at the end of the semester.
It's not an IMPOSSIBLE class. It's OK. But it's still too much of a pain for one credit hour, and also because you could probably learn more chemistry without the lab. It's always ahead of schedule, making it harder, and graders love taking off points. Submitting for regrades is a pain. Overall difficult but you get used to it.
She is awful. Instead of answering her students' questions, she focuses on making them feel stupid for even asking that. She does not explain anything, rushes through powerpoints, iclicker points are ALWAYS for accuracy with 1-2 minutes to solve them. Her tests are awful with 20 min to do them. You have to memorize everything or you fail.
This professor was not the best professor I have ever had but also not the worst. I would say the #1 thing is be prepared before the lectures and ask questions in class (she really values that). She goes really fast in her lectures and gives hard quizzes. But overall not a bad professor.
Didn't actually have her; she's the lab coordinator. Chem lab is average. You definitely have to put in a decent amount of work for lab. They are very picky when it comes to grading, but it is NOT impossible to get a good grade. If you have a good understanding of the material and watch the Tegrity lectures, then you'll be fine.
the class is hard but tbh she a real one
Don't recommend at all, does not explain well and lectures are boring
If you have Daria listed as your lab professor, she's not actually it. Cham lab is taught by Graduate Students and you don't get to choose which one you get. Some aren't bad and chill and others will make you cry. Read all the information on Sapling to help you fill out your lab. Make friends with your lab partners so you can work together.
She's the lab coordinator for Chem labs 1 & 2 and she's awful. She's really strict and makes me ruin my underwear(if you know what I mean). She's that scary, judgmental and unapproachable. Be aware that she's everywhere in the chem building. Avoid running into her at all costs. Only did well because I got help from friends and read lab backgrounds.
She's pretty intimidating but you can tell she loves chemistry. You have to take notes during her lectures, because her slides and the slides she provides you with are different. She's a fair grader and as long as you are determined to pass, you should be able to. Self-teaching is a must with some chapters.
For a one credit hour class, this class required way more work than a three credit hour class. Sapling is your friend and so are the TAs. Just when you think you finally understand how to do the pre-class procedure, you still gets points docked time and time again. I ended up dropping the class... not to mention the book costs $80 per semester
Daria is the gen chem lab coordinator, and has little interaction with students unless reached out to. Grad students follow her guide lines (as far as I know), and grading policies are very strict and material is covered at awkward times compared to the lecture. A mandatory 80$ worksheet book is required, and often the grading is very nit picky
I feel bad for those going into Gen Chem 1 lab at SLU. Having to suffer boring experiments and high expectations. My experience was horrible. Seven experiments. Out of them, two titrations, one enthalpy (where we see nothing happen), two that have to do with physical change (heat). Definitely don't recommend unless you want to be a scientist.
