I 'm taking his class CSE 1311. He's very good and clear in teaching. His examples, practices and infomations already there. He take step by step level in the homework and very helpful. He's the best.
I took this professor for CSE 1301 and he is a good teacher. His class was easy all you have to do is study the powerpoints and that's basically it. The book is not necessary for the class; only the book for lab. His test are all short answer but not difficult. There are only 3 test, no final.
This class is really easy as long as long as you print out his powerpoints and study the slides you'll do good. don't buy the lecture book, but you do need to buy the book for lab.
He is extremely helpful. Answers about a billion emails a day, i bet. Homework every week, but if you can do those then the exam is really easy. He is a good one.
Great Professor, can seem a lil' whack but he is very awesome to talk to.He is too helpful(lol!), tests are simple show output of c programming and create simple c programs. The book assigned for the class is only used for reference, but is a plus to have. Easy A if you do at least some programming practice while not in class. Definitely recommend!
Class was taught in C89. Teacher is familiar with C99 and C++. 1310 isn't as rigorous as his 1311 course. 80% of test questions are reading code, 20% you write. Brez knows his stuff, and teaches well.
Probably the most down to earth professor. He doesn't have PhD syndrome like most teachers i have had. His class is pretty easy if you keep up with the material. He is a fun guy, but expects you to know the material. Will definitely try to take him for another class.
He is awesome! He is really helpful. He answers your emails right away and is always available to help you. It's a pretty hard class requiring weekly homework but you learn the material by figuring out the homework. So you don't need to study for tests if you do the homework! He is nice and teaches in a way anyone can understand and posts everything on his website from homework solutions, past tests to powerpoints! Take him!
Too bad there arent more teachers like Brezeale. The world would be a more intelligent place.
An awesome professor. I've had a little experience with C so I had no troubles with his class, but even so he goes into great detail and makes sure everybody understands the subject to the greatest degree possible. Very friendly and helpful. Textbook is optional but helpful to have one.
Great Teacher! Very easy to follow and teaches in a way that everybody understands. Very down to earth and friendly. Very helpful if you have questions.
Professor Brezeale is a great teacher. The class was fun and not too difficult. The homework is not terribly laborious and the midterms/final are not that hard either. Take him if you can!
I took him back when the course was still taught in C and found it pretty easy because I already knew how to program. It's hard to judge his teaching ability because of his but I can say he's a great person. He set a great example of the CSE department.
He is an outstanding professor. Goes out of his way to be available for students. Very quick email responses. Tests are always straightforward. If he would grow back his beard he would get a chili pepper for sure.
Nice guy, short labs, go to class and practice programming, you'll be fine. A rare prof who really takes an interest in his students and his role in their learning. Writes a good bit of free supplemental CSE-related help guides available on his campus web page.
Best teacher in the CSE department.
Easy for those who are familiar with programming but for the beginners , he is worst. Hard tests. No extra points, but he is really helpful.
I am taking this class current spring sem. Darin used to be very good teacher, when I took him for python, cse 1310 year back. But this sem, he is so rude when u go to him for doubts, just let u know the fault and thats it. May be he is busy wid other stuffs. :) Still I would recommend him. 10 Labs are short but challenging as its just for a week.
Same as below, smart guy great prof very helpful, but DON'T take if you are beginner. Text book is no help, great class for majors.
Difficult course at UTA, regardless of the teacher. If you're going to take it, Darin isn't a bad way to go. This semester was his first 1320 course, and he will probably be a lot better next time. If you need help, he will try to give you as little as you need, but in my experience, won't stop until you're good.
Ok so Brezeale is a good guy. However I took him this spring and I guess he expected a lot from us. The test are completely writing code so they are easy to fail. I don't think his HW is that hard. Also even if his class did cause me strain I can sincerely say that he DID though me C well. So I have to say that I recommend him, but be warned.
OK.My first programming class was more than I expected. It all went well for the first few months of the semester. But at the end, he taught us more data structure and no C or C++ at all. I guess he just went crazy trying to make other professor's work easy. But how can you teach all data structure in C. If he is like this? I don't recommend him.
If you are genius then go for it else don't take a risk. He will kill you and after working hard throughout the semester you can expect F as your grade. So stay away from him.
I do not recommend this prof. He taught data structures at the end of semester. I was hoping that I will do good in finals to make up my grade . But he gave all the questions worth lots of points from data structures in the intermediate programming class.you will get easy F if u have not taken C before..!!!
Don't take class with him. He doesnt give a damn how his class is doing in exams regardless of low avg. He will kill you in finals with all data structures questions which are supposed to be taught in higher classes.
Materials before first test easy. A beginner? course gets really tough progressively. neither books nor office visits help. Labs aren't too hard. Expects you to have programming experience before class. Speaks waytoofast. Tries to help you. NOT recommended for beginners. Not beginners? you'll pass. Just be careful &Be ready to spend HOURS on it.
I had to retake because I skipped too many times. If attitude is, if you're not caught up, then you need to read the book, or his examples. Exams are easy if you've done your homework, and practiced a little.
You can attend class only to finals and make an A. You have to keep up with the course and submit the homework though, of course. He posts his examples and lectures(ppts) online so you can easily teach yourself. Highly recommended. He does NOT expect you to have experience. He only asks if you do.
ATTEND HIS CLASSES, he will tell you that you don't have to show up other than for exams but you WILL FAIL if you don't attend his classes. Course becomes easy if you do the homework and show up in class. He will answer questions, don't be intimidated by how he speaks. When you get to data-structures make sure to practice and study them a lot.
His class is definitely not on the easy side, but it is still very possible to make an A. He is very clear about what he wants and how he wants it, which is a positive thing. He is always available and willing to help when you need it, and he replies to emails very quickly. DO THE HOMEWORK, attend class, and you should be fine!
Best professor in UTA. If you are a beginner, study hard at home. He will make you a professional programmer.
Great Teacher! Attend his classes, do all homework and you will do fine in the class. His exams are just like his homework assignments. Don't expect it to be an easy class since its an intermediary course. Also, No one can teach you pointer better than him.
I took him for CSE 1310 and CSE 1320. HE IS THE BEST TEACHER you will get. I really miss his class. While you're taking him, you don't appreciate everything he does, but you will. YOU WILL NOT REGRET THIS CHOICE. He also is super helpful. If you have a question, don't hesitate to go to his office hours! He loves speaking to students.
best professor in the CSE department. He does everything he can to show you how useful programming can be, and to help you out with whatever it may be. I even go to him now (1.5 years after i've taken his 1310 and 1320 classes) for help occasionally. Make no mistake though, you will have to work, but you will most definitely learn the material.
The way he grades, he will do as much as he can to try to fail you. He is an angry man. Do not mess with him. His homework will take you millions of hours to finish. If you dont have prior programming experience, listen to this. Do NOT TAKE HIM because you will regret your decision. Take him if you dont care about your grades, you will learn
One of the best professor in UTA. After you take his class, you are guaranteed to success ahead of your programming class. You will learn advance stuff with him which will sharpen your knowledge of programming through out your career.
Very helpful especially if you see him in his office or in the halls he WILL help you as much as he if you put in the effort. It may seem like he is going fast, but thats the nature of the course but you learn a ton, he teaches in such a way that it is really easy to understand difficult concepts like SVD and Least Squares. Great guy and helpful.
Tough professor, but he is very helpful and cares about making you learn the material. He does not curve grades. If you take one of his classes, expect to put in work.
He is a good teacher but too hard. Each homework takes around 15 hours. exams are very hard and there is no curve. I thought i could make it since i was taking online course and reading the book i bought for learning C. Maybe i could have passed in a regular semester. DO NOT TAKE HIM IN SUMMER! unless your don't have a job.
Great professor. If you want to LEARN how to PROGRAM take his class. If you want an easy class to get an A in, DO NOT take this class. He is helpful, he knows what he's doing, he's overqualified to teach, and he will hammer programming into your head. If you want to be successful in the real world, then you won't be afraid to take him.
He is a very good professor. Very Very difficult. If you take him, you will learn alot. expect to put 10+ hours on each homework. He is very strict when it comes to grading. He is helpful in answering over email. Don't expect him to give the answers as only faint clues are given. Pretty imppressive actually. Don't expect to get an A in his class.
Hands down my favorite Professor. You can set your watch by his homework due dates and class schedule. He really understands what he is teaching and is very clear about what you need to do. You will learn a lot from him if your willing to work. He is a tough grader, but consistent and very willing to help you 1 on 1.
Amazing professor, very intelligent and able to share his knowledge effectively. Down to earth and always willing to help. Good sense of humor too! Don't expect an easy A though, he is insistent that you understand the material. Will take again, every chance I get.
Tough class, tough grading system, but extremely likable professor. He teaches with enthusiasm in a way that shows he knows way beyond the material he's teaching. If you do and understand all the homework, the tests aren't bad. But you need to keep both your test and hw averages high--your final grade is the LOWER of the two.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HIM. Homework is given back to back, and his lectures are really long. His lectures are important to go to so you know what is going on, but he tends to get off topic a lot. For many this is the first time using C in his class, but he doesn't do a good job. very FAST place class. Good person, would not recommend for an easy A
You couldn't pick a better professor for 1320. Homework is reasonable and the exams are challenging. You will end the semester feeling like you learned a lot.
Dr. Brezeale is one of the best professors I've encountered at UTA thus far. He is extremely knowledgeable in what he teaches. He expects that students taking 1320 have a firm grasp of the fundamentals taught in 1310 (i.e. loops, functions, variables, lists, dictionaries etc.). Don't skip class because hearing him talk about the material helps.
He is OVER QUALIFIED to teach at UTA. Brilliant teacher. If you take him, make sure you know what you're doing. He is more than willing to help you anytime of the week, even weekends. I unfortunately had to drop his class only because of his grading policies. He takes 2 averages of HW & tests. Which ever average is lower is your final grade!
He puts a lot of work into making his assignments- homework will keep you busy. Does an okay job of explaining concepts in class. Aside from that he's not a very nice guy- not approachable during office hours, first time dealing with such a disrespectful professor. Incredibly condescending.
Just avoid him. He is impatient and sometimes loses temper.
Poor and unclear lectures.
This class is guaranteed to make you a better programmer if you stick with it till the end. This is not a class you want to take if you're looking to get a high grade. Homeworks take hours on end and tests are relatively easier. If you do take this class with him please know this is the toughest class you possibly can take as a freshman/sophomore.
Darin is a very difficult teacher, but by far one of the best. The only thing is, if you trip, you have a low chance of catching up. UNLESS you go speak with him. I made the mistake of not doing so until after it was too late. But that's not his fault, and he was still helpful when I did come to him. Definitely advise him to learn a ton.
Have you ever heard any professor drop the highest grade homework or exam? No? Now you have.
You will LEARN A LOT with Dr. Brezeale. He will show you why his courses are relevant to your degree and to your career goals. People that are saying he is "awful" are not in school for the right reasons. Dr. Brezeale is one of the few reasons I am proud to be a UTA alumni.
Dr. Brezeale is one of my favorite professors at UTA. His classes are very challenging and his grading system is difficult, but no one will do a better job of teaching you the material. I've used everything he taught in his class in subsequent classes. Beyond that, he actually cares about his students, and that's a quality I'll cherish in any prof.
Amazing teacher! Lectures are packed full of information, and the homework is challenging, but very do-able! He makes sure to explain how the topic is relevant to CS and will do his best to answer any questions. He is very willing to help in his office hours, too, and genuinely cares about your success. Take him if you want a challenge and to learn
He is a very good teacher, but expect to work for an A. You should really invest in going to class, attendance isn't mandatory, but if you want a good grade go to lecture. He never assigns anything out of the book, but you should read chapters. Test are short and have problems very similar to the homework, so understand the homework very well.
Takes HW or Exam Avg for final grade. Expected to have lower Exam Avg, but I found HW more challenging. People let tutors do the work or copy off each other, and it shows with their test scores, yet you're allowed to replace bad score w/ final. Need to be able to make up HWs! If you work and commute, make time for reading. Otherwise great teacher!
Awful teacher. Like many said, he's hard to understand, work is hard and he doesn't provide any useful help.
Please do not take this class unless you already know the subject, he is insane. The labs are extremely hard and the way he grades it is very unclear. He doesn't even care about you, this is a very important class and this will mess up your gpa.
I'm not sure why this professor gets such a bad rep among some students. He is a challenging professor but the notion that he doesn't care about the students is total BS. Take notes religiously during lectures, understand the homework, and go to office hours if you're still having trouble. Tests are very similar to homework. You will learn a lot!
Great teacher, no nonsense at times. He understands the material can be a rough at times so he works through lots of example problems in lectures that help out with the homework and tests. He takes the lower of your test/homework average which is a little scary but neither of those are outrageously hard if you keep up with everything.
I have had him for cse1320 and cse3380. One of the best professors at UTA. If you expect to come in and breeze through the class you will have trouble. You actually have to learn in his classes. He explains material thoroughly and if you are having any trouble ask questions he will answer them
His grading policies are strict but it is very easy to learn in his class.
If you have signed up for one of his class, get ready to work hard. He used to make every single class (1hr 50 mins class) would go so fast. During his class, make sure you are not distracted for even a single second, because you will be missing some valuable information. His lectures are well packed & organized and u'll learn a lot at the end.
I very much enjoyed his lectures. The class covers a lot of material and he is pretty tough on grading, but if you come to class and pay attention you should be good.
He does not waste your time be prepared to come to class and take notes as the homeworks and assignments are directly based off the notes - Programming assignments require prior knowledge but demonstrate real world principles and applications - his tests are 5 questions - study homework and you will pass - master the concepts not the questions
Best professor at UTA, hands down. His lectures are amazing, you will learn a LOT and he will always try to relate things back to CS. Everything you need to know is taught in class, homeworks are usually straight forward. Brilliant guy, super smart, very enthusiastic about teaching. Anything on the test is fair game as it is always found in notes.
Dr. B is one of the best CSE professors at UTA. He's a great lecturer and he gives a lot of good analogies to help understand the material better. Your final grade is the lower grade between your homework average and your exam average so it forces you to do both. The exams are not hard as long as you do and understand the homework.
I learned almost nothing in his class. Luckily, I have a friend who already took linear algebra with the math department who helped me. Take his class if you are very good at the topics he will "teach." He doesn't teach coding in python but gives python coding assignment.
Reviews say he was good, I wish I took him when he was the best professor. He makes a lot of mistakes which made me rely on the textbook rather than his lectures. Now, we have 4 tests, he used to give 3 tests when he was a good professor. Know how to coin your question, otherwise he would be disrespectful. Has a poor ability to convey the material.
Dr. Brezeale is very clear on what he expects from you. His grading policy is unique and sounds like a nightmare, but doing your homework means you will do fine on the exams. People who say he doesn't truly teach likely were not actually paying attention; Dr. B's lectures and website are packed with useful information regarding LinAlg. Awesome guy.
What Dr. B teaches in 2312 is really good! He understands that assembly isn't something most people will be dealing with in the CS field, and so he teaches us to code a very gentle assembly. The computer organization stuff he does teach has been really helpful in terms of how things work, and really interesting, especially about performance.
The last two defending rates sound exact like what Brezeale says about his classes! Grades haven't been posted yet the defender got 2 A's! I did not understand what he was saying in class. I read the book, did the homework, and didn't do well in class. I should have taken this class in TCC, it is transferrable. I wasted my money on this class.
His grading scheme is definitely weird. But his homework assignments are not difficult and the exams are based on homework. He is lenient on grading and lectures are easy to follow. So if you study good, it should be an easy A. But you will need to do more by yourself if you want to learn more about the topics.
He's a solid teacher, but I wouldn't recommend taking him during the summer. Class moves much more quickly than any other class and your grade is equivalent to the LOWER of labs/tests grade total. If you do want to take him during the summer, make sure you aren't working a full time job or taking some other courses. (I did both).
If you actually want to know and use the material he teaches in this class later, take him. If you want an easy A and don't care about learning, DO NOT take him. Yes his grading policy is odd, yes his class is theory based (not just formula memorization), you actually have to learn and understand the material well in order to get a good grade.
Ridiculous grading system where he takes the lowest of your homework/test average and that is your final grade for the course. Made us use archaic text editors like vim which makes debugging nearly impossible for students learning to code in C for the first time. I would only suggest taking if you already have a strong programming background.
Brezeale should change his grading policy. It appears as if he cares more about failing students rather than their learning. Grademin(hw_avg, exam_avg) is ridiculous. Not that his homeworks or exams are too hard, but showing zero flexibility (no extra credit, no curve nothing) shows that he care more about his policy rather than students
One of the best professors I've taken, he does not read from powerpoints, but rather prepares his own notes and learns the material himself to teach you. Lots of homework, but you will learn alot and can use the material in the real world you learn. Tests are easy if you go to class and takes notes. No quizzes.
He's clear and to the point. Good at explaining concepts. Easy to make an A just by doing the 10 homeworks and going to class. Tests are DIRECTLY based off the homework. Some Python in the last few homeworks.
I would rather quit study if i have a professor like him in future. Teachers are motivational factors of students but i am so demotivate with his character. I don't know about his mission but believe me or not you will frustrated taking his class. His mission is like failing students.
I will be graduating in a few months, and I can say that this person was the worst "professor" I saw. I attended the classes, worked the HW,and did my best and failed the class in the first time. I learned almost nothing and regret what I paid for his class. a lot of searching the Internet, long hours, and textbooks helped me but not Mr. Brezeale.
You might be intimidated by his grading, but it's actually not that bad because of his amazing lectures. His tests aren't there to screw you over - everything on it was covered in hws/lectures, and hws were straightforward. Algorithms is tough, but he makes it easy to understand. If he ever teaches the course again, DEFINITELY take him
This guy can make the easiest topics seem very hard. I was struggling in his class and consider him as a professor with little teaching skills. Try to find someone or some resource that teaches you if you registered for his class. Final grade is the lowest average of either your HW or tests. I studied a lot and still worried about my final grade.
There will be a lot of people who say Dr. Brezeale is a terrible professor. There will be a decent number of people who say Dr. Brezeale is one of the best professors they've ever had. Almost no one will have a moderate view of him. If you want to learn the material and get the grade you deserve, you cannot ask for a better teacher.
horrible teaching style, good smart guy. take someone else. this course in general is not taught very intuitively.
i like this professor, however, he does not teach 2312 well. like, at all. makes you want to tear your hair out.
He was a good professor back in 2019... not so great professor now. He's new to canvas system so his modules are full of links to broad topics and his recorded lecture are not good. His homework is confusing at times. He definitely doesn't take responsibility in his poor teaching skills. He emails us stating why we failed to pass his class.
no resources. makes the class next to impossible to study for. canvas links are too broad. tests, are 2-4 questions. make a mistake, you get 25+ points taken off.
Personable professor, prioritizes understanding the material over anything. Hard course to juggle if you are taking other CSE/core classes that you will prioritize over Assembly. The weekly homework is annoyingly complex and graded strictly. Course and professor's grading have contributed to a sharp deterioration of my mental health this semester.
Grades homework so harshly do not take him. RUN
never cried and stressed so much over homework and a professor's grading style save yourselves the panic attacks
Super tough grader, difficult to understand lectures. He's very erratic and not very helpful unless you see him outside of class *in person*. First few homeworks are easy then suddenly are long and confusing. He prioritizes you understanding the material but it means he wont help you out with the hws. Think mad genius maybe...
Good, passionate teacher. His class did require some outside of class learning to get concepts as the lecture goes fast- but he's the best teacher if you want to really understand it all. Fairly strict grader but lots of partial credit and the lectures are recorded. He went pretty fast so you do have to keep up- but his weekly hw was manageable.
Overall good professor, he knows his stuff and teaches relatively well to professors in the CSE department. Tests are 70%, hws are 30%. His tests are 4 questions, as long as you pay attention in class and do hws, the tests are easy. He posts youtube videos outside of class that were helpful. Wish he had slides posted all along. There was a curve.
Not a bad professor. Explains things pretty well. Hw every week but not very hard. I believe 80 percent is exams. Do your best to get an A on the first two as they are very easy in hindsight. Exam one is a free A. The final is a little harder.
I honestly don't know why this professor is getting so many negative reviews for 2312. Assembly was one of the classes where I actually enjoyed attending and learning. Homework is tedious and long but very rewarding. Exams are easy if you study homework and practice coding.
The first few assignments are easy but then the later ones make you wanna question your life. Never stressed over the homework so much before. Do yourself a favor and pick another instructor. You will save your sanity and a lot of your time.
Originally, I didn't like him but I actually grew to like his way of teaching. He pushes his students so they are prepared for anything that comes at them. The class becomes very easy if you take the time to understand what you are learning and apply that to homework and exams.
His class is the reason I dropped out of computer science tbh.
If you are 1 min late for class to submit the homework, you get 0/100. If your code for some reason doesn't compile or has a little silly error, you get 0/100, no points for the attempt at all. He is anxious and is very jittery and it bothered me throughout the whole semester. His weird accent was horrible. Worst professor ever, run away telling ya
The professor is overly strict with deadlines, giving a zero for being seconds late on assignments. A fairer approach is to deduct a small percentage instead of dismissing the effort entirely, where your effort doesn't go vague. This rigid policy has negatively affected my grade, and I would have done better if the grading were more reasonable.
Amazing professor, you will learn a lot from him if you put in the effort
The way he lectures is clear and will pause to allow students to ask questions or fully grasp a concept. When taking his class, it is imperative to pay attention. His grading policy is that of following procedure according to UTA, so there is no leniency. This class (similar to calc 2) can be difficult because of the subject, so take time and study
The teacher doesn't give feedback for exams. Whenever I email him with questions, he always says, ‘I went over this in class,' which isn't helpful. He replies quickly, which is nice, but his responses often feel rude and make it seem like it's my fault for asking. This class is easy, he makes it harder. Get Abhishek Santra he's better.
His lectures contain a lot of unnecessary and unclear bad examples. Chat gpt is a better teacher than him. UTA dont put him for lecture put an AI instead of him.
His partial credit is not the greatest. Exams are not hard honestly. But if the answer is wrong half credit only, and even sometimes no credit for the problem. Also he doesn't really say what will be on the exam. It's a bit difficult to study the right topics. Recommend book/hw. Chill prof partial credit kills also doesn't put grade up till end.
Last resort professor. Tough grader, ask him for help he will say go look at the lecture videos. Does not release grades on canvas. I rather miss a semester to take Professor Santra instead of him. Good luck.
Chat gpt is a better teacher. He does way too much for no reason.
Exams are messy. Doesn't give you a clear guideline on what to expect. He says to look at the syllabus or the hws but it's useless. His partial credit SUCKS, either half credit or no points for the problem. Cal 2 was easier than this class.
All I'm going to say is take Santra. Save yourself the trouble. Wouldn't even use this guy as a last resort.
Useless asking him for help even though we are paying him to teach us. It's not you. It's him.
does too much. He will probably read some of these reviews on the first day to try to defend his teaching style, but it doesn't make any sense. Good luck.
CSE 3318. Amazing professor. Genuinely the G.O.A.T. If you WANT to learn and actually get better, take Brezeale. Brezeale University on top. Practice, WANT to learn, show up, ask questions, practice practice practice. I actually feel bad for other students that he won't be here again. He's amazing and I wish I took more classes with him.11/10 prof
Don't know why people keep giving him a 1. Just attend lectures and do your homework, and you'll do fine. I legit got all 100s on the 3 tests, and the lectures aren't that bad as people say. I wish I could've taken him for CSE 3318, but it is unfortunately his last semester here. He does go a bit quickly through notes, though.
He teaches well and explains from the ground up, but office hours are just pep talks with little feedback. Exams are fair yet unpredictable since he never says what to expect. Partial credit is not the greatest, tiny mistakes gets you a zero even with full reasoning despite him saying otherwise. His reputation didn't match my experience at all.
Pros: - teaches well - willing to answer your questions - fast in replying to emails Cons: - super tough grader - heavy HW and Test - must have the skills of pre-requisite courses - some face problem with his accent Recommend? Hard to say. If you want easy A professor, don't take him. If you want to learn and care less about grades, he's good
