Sadly I only had one class with him, but he is an AWESOME teacher! Really knows his stuff and you will have to do some work to pass, but I would take any class he teaches because I want to learn and not just be handed a grade. It does need to be said that he will not put up with any entitled High School BS... don't have your phone out.

Darin Combs is one of the best teachers I have ever had in my life. Before taking history with him I loathed it. He makes the subject very interesting which makes the 3 hours go by a lot faster. This semester I am in my third course with him. Take notes, study those notes, and ATTEND CLASS and you WILL get an A, I promise.

Incredibly funny and knows his stuff; helps the class go by more quickly with his interesting lectures. Simply read your textbook, take notes, and show up to pass the tests. Tests are multiple choice. Avoid having your cell phone out.

Darin is a great teacher. I was skeptical of him at first, especially after reading the other reviews on here. As long as you take notes, read the chapters, and keep your cell phone out of sight and turned off, you shouldn't have a problem at all. He is very clear about what he expects from day one and really knows his stuff.

Mr. Combs is the best instructor I have ever had the pleasure of taking. His lectures are AMAZING. His stories are memorable, so you remember the material. If you are easily offended- don't enroll. He is very blunt. I took him twice, and would take him again if I could. YOU MUST TAKE NOTES. Your notes are your test material.

He's probably the best professor at TCC. He really cares about the students and knows the material. I immensely recommend (READING the textbook, TAKING NOTES, and if so, RECORD LECTURES). You can record lectures and take notes and later while looking at the study guide, mark off what you went over(even in class too). Even take notes on study guide.

He is clear on what he expects. Random easy pop quizzes. Tough tests which have alot of information. Book not required but severely recommended. Attend every class. Great lectures and i will note he is slightly hostile to Christianity and has alot of emphasis on Greek philosophy so prepare to disagree. overall great professor.

LOVE this professor. I am in his class this semester and will be taking a class I didn't intend to next year just to learn from him again. I recommend him for students who truly want to be challenged to learn. I highly recommend a recorder! Take excellent notes, record the lecture, then go through them again and again. TCC is lucky to have him.

Great teacher!! You HAVE to take notes and pay attention! He is hilarious and makes the 3 hours zoom by! I am taking him again for Federal Government, his lectures are basically what the test is over. He does throw a few questions in on the test that you would only know if you read the chapters! TAKE HIM! I loved him!

He is fair, if the class average is below standards for a test then he will help the average grade. TAKE NOTES! He prints out study guides, so look for the key points on the study guide for what to take notes off of. EVERYTHING on his test are off study guide. If you miss class you will be behind. No nonsense but entertaining instructor. Read book, used study guides, went to every lecture I could, made As and Bs. Quiz every chapter, test every 2-3 chapters. All multiple choice. Questions: from rather easy - read & thorough analysis. One rather easy essay test. Posts scores quickly. Food & electronics not allowed! Read the syllabus thoroughly

I looked forward to Prof. Combs class more than any other that I had. His teaching style is humorous lecture. This man knows his stuff! He picks & plays,& he is all about getting business taken care of. You will certainly earn whatever grade you receive. Listen, take notes, participate, you may just get a nickname :) My kind of teacher! Loved him!

Professor Combs is by far the greatest History teacher I have ever had. His lectures are one of a kind. They are never boring, they will keep you hooked. His class is a great experience. He truly cares about your education. So don't expect him to let you out of class early. He is "going to get you your money's worth" and he really does!

Most memorable professor of my college career. He's brilliant, scholarly, and knows what he's talking about. He plays all the angles, and love being Devil's Advocate. He encourages class engagement, treats everyone the same, and isn't afraid to act goofy to get the point across. "Gravy train with biscuits for wheels!" Great, great guy!

Professor Combs is an amazing professor. His lectures are in story mode. He writes on the board the notes you should take. If you take the notes and study them then you would 100 percent get a high B or an A.

Never had any problems. Gives pop quizzes. There isn't a lot of work here, so you must do really good on tests and quizzes. I believe there are 5 quizzes and 4 tests, can't quite remember. Lectures are funny. Do not use your phone or even look at it, it makes him really mad. Don't be late either, he will embarrass you in front of the class.

He's the BEST. The knowledge he has for History and everything in between is amazing. Get ready to take notes from start to finish. It's not an easy A, but if you take notes, every question on his quiz/tests are there. I ended up taking 3 classes he taught because I loved his teaching. He's straightforward, funny, and makes you want to learn more.

Text book reading is a must. Those complaining must not know what college really is and still think they are in high school.

Excellent professor with amazing lectures. Took him previously for American Federal Government and as long as you take good notes, read material, be respectful in class, do your work, it is possible to make a good grade in this class. Be prepared for pop quizzes (total of 5), and an in class writing assessment. Tests are multiple choice.

This is my last and second class i have take with Mr Combs, the reason because i dont need anymore history for my major. I always enjoyed his classes, his personality is odd but it always makes his teaching fun. never be afraid to ask questions. he does give pop quizes, you will need to read out of the book alittle, mostly on tests are out of notes

Wonderful Professor, First year of college and I'm glad I decided to go with Prof. Combs. "Lecture Oriented" but they are always informational and entertaining. Fair Grader, Occasional Pop Quizzes. Expect at least 3 Exams throughout the semester.

Smart guy. I am a smart kid, i have had a 4.0, not sure if im going to end with one in his class though, hes a tough teacher, you will learn a lot, but do not expect a blowoff class. Your grade comes from 3 tests, quizzes, and an essay. So if you dont do good on everything good luck getting an A. I would say most people get a C in his class.

Professor Combs is a great professor. This class is not a blowoff class though. Get the book and be ready to read. Class is made up of 3 tests, 5 quizzes, and a short essay. He is very good about responding to emails, and answering any question in or out of class. Tests are tough so be sure you keep up on your reading. Watch out for pop quizzes.

He's is a good teacher who knows the subject well, but I would not take him if you do not want to earn your grade. Pay attention and participate during lecture and you will do well. I never read any of the book and studied based off my notes and did well. I did take modern western civilization in high school though, so I had some knowledge.

Professor Combs is an amazing instructor who has a wealth of knowledge of history which he utilizes to teach his class incredibly well in my opinion. He doesn't give out homework but he does expect you to keep up with reading. His lectures are very important and most of them will appear on his tests. Overall great guy and great teacher.

Professor Combs was an amazing professor! I absolutely loved his class. He brought history to life and made it really fun to learn! There were a few take-home quizzes, but they're to boost your grade. Make sure to at least glance at the textbook because there are some questions on the tests that won't be from the lecture.

Mr. Combs was a great Civil War professor. He really knows his stuff. In order to pass the tests and quizzes, keep up with your notes and read the book. There are a couple take home quizzes throughout the semester, which are good to boost your grade up a little:)

He is tough but fair. Take notes on his lecture & you will pass his tests and quiz's. He is a snarky butthole but it is funny. If you cannot stand that kind of person you will not enjoy his class. If you can't help missing a class, make sure you can get notes from someone. I'm taking more of his courses for my humanities credits.

If you take good notes you will not fail. He lectures based off the book so if you miss a class period you wont be entirely lost. I highly recommend!

Prof. Combs always comes into class with a smile on his face and a good attitude. He can be sarcastic and teases students a lot, but it's all in good fun. He's very lecture heavy and teaches up to the last second, but he relates the material to everyday life and makes it understandable. He doesn't just hand out A's, you need to work for your grade.

He was really funny, always joking around. Warning if you miss a class you will need to get the notes from a class mate, because some stuff said during the lectures is not in the textbook. Really enjoyed this class, plan on taking another one of his courses .

Professor Combs structures his class around a traditional lecture and test. He will cover everything that will be on the tests during his lectures. He used 3 tests and 4 assignments so there is little room for error. Professor Combs is highly knowledgeable and will add in context that the book glosses over.

Love his dark humor and jokes. First week started with a group project to weed out the lazy bums. Lectures were super informative and explained history from both points, related to common current events, simple and direct in what he wants for his papers and assignments. 4 Tests. 4 Assignments. No extra credit. Read the book and study the material.

The best professor I have ever had. I have taken all of his classes as they are all for credit, anything you take from him will apply to your degree as a gen ed requirement. The best lectures ever! So much amazing content and fun facts that are backed by research or scholarly articles. He is extremely knowledgeable and go to class, you'll pass!

This class used to have pop quizzes, but he removed them in all his classes. He takes feedback seriously and removed them because they were unpopular. He is super accessible. Class lectures and discussion are amazing! A easy A if you show up. First test is a little tricky but all are structured the same. His lectures cover the book and more!

He has such a great sense of humor, its witty and dry! Accessible outside of class, make sure you show up though, or have someone take notes for you. I missed one class and missed the material covered and was the reason I got a high B rather than an A. I love this professor, have taken all his classes though. Really an easy A if you participate.

This class was originally in a classroom but got switched online due to Covid. He handled it perfectly and was very understanding of people's struggles due to Covid. Still does video lectures which are amazing, you need to be in class to get an A. Have people record the sessions if you aren't going to be there or take notes for you. Its important!

Professor Combs, who has been teaching at TCC for over 20 years, is "old school". That's one of the reasons that he doesn't post announcements to Blackboard, you understand how to test solely by attending his lectures and taking notes. For me, his lectures felt very fluid and time goes by quickly. The online textbook is how you get work done.

evenn though he assigns alot of homework he is a good teacher and I appreciate his dry sense of humor although no one else in my class did lol. His tests were filled with stuff he covers in class and they aren't super difficult either.

he's a pretty funny guy. lectures take up the whole class period but he makes it interesting. make sure to take good notes + be attentive of ALL of his lectures or you wont be able to pass any exams. we had 1 assignment and quiz a week which were all very easy and straightforward. overall its not a bad class at all.

I'm currently in his class and I love it, it's a fun class, but he is very lecture heavy however. Make sure you take good notes in the class because that is your study guide for the tests. He's a fun professor. I've never seen a man name off more history then Mr. Combs. If you're a History major like me, then he's perfect for you. Very stern, but very fair. His way of teaching is interactive, and very clear and his humor is amazing. He believes in hard and honest work. He grades very fairly. This course is challenging but doable if you attend class and set aside time at home to do assignments. Mr. Combs explains the content clearly and gives direct expectations about the work involved. He is punctual and dedicated, and he teaches within the scope of how the content applies to life. He also cares about students' safety outside of class.

2 homework assignments each week, you can just brute force them because they tell you the answers. I love his humor this was my 2nd class with him. Take him for an elective if you love history like me!

Professor Combs turns a lecture into a story for his students. Show up to class for note taking and Work hard, you will have an A in his class. I absolutely recommend any of his classes.

He had his online textbook assignments, which were worth 35 points for every chapter. Other than that, grades were heavily dependent on tests. Test answers come from his lectures, and attendance was not mandatory; however, missing too many lectures could result in a bad test grade. Very passionate about what he does.

Prof. Combs was a pretty good teacher. In terms of teaching the class material, I think he has done it best out of any of the TCC classes I have taken. He dives deep into the material and its meanings. If you love history I recommend taking him. H/W is easy just very time consuming. Make sure you study for the test as they are very detailed.

I honestly don't understand all the online hate for him. The only people who hate him are those who don't like the material and don't listen to the lectures. If you pay attention and take notes, it's a really great class with a really wonderful teacher.

Professor Combs is so great- I think I learned more in his class than in any other class in college thus far! Be sure to show up and take notes, as this is your study guide. Such a great professor that can place students into the "zeitgeist" of historical times (as he says). His lectures are memorable, and he definitely has a sense of humor!

This is such a good class. Note that homework assignments due on the weekends will cover the following week's material that will be covered and elaborated on in lecture, so be sure to read to the textbook chapter assigned with the assessments and quizzes, and they are very straightforward. This is an incredibly meaningful course!

He's honestly a great teacher yes his assignments take a bit long to complete because of Mcgraw hill and the heavily weighed time concepts. However, yes he does take a while to complete a chapter and he does make remarks that might offend some people but before he says it he makes sure to tell everyone if they feel comfortable.

While attendance was not mandatory, the tests were entirely lecture-based, and important class information came specifically from the class; no online resources. I found him very funny, and as long as you did the work on time (no late work was accepted), it was easy to earn an A.

In this course, you must read, take notes, and mentally work so that you can understand the material. Every class is a lecture, which he visualizes on the whiteboard, asking questions to his students and sparking laughter.

It was mighty hard and helpful to be given a chance to give it my all. I was sad financial aid didn't allow taking more of his classes, sadder still to hear he retired. It's all history now.

I have taken all of Professor Combs' courses and I can say; I had nothing, but an absoutely stellar experience and I accredit Professor Combs to my positive outlook on higher education.
