Oh so smart, friendly, young, handsome, well dressed, scooter ridden... and married. ACK!
GARARD IS AN AWESOME TEACHER WHO REALLY KNOWS HIS STUFF. HE MAKES COMING TO CLASS FUN BECAUSE HE DOES SOMETHING DIFFERENT EVERYDAY. aLTHOUGH HE IS A TOUGH TEACHER, HE PUTS YOU TO THE CHALLENGE. I WILL MISS HIM AS A TEACHER!!!
Great classroom environment, very involving manner open to student input!
He packs far too much information into the course making it very difficult to do well. He needs to focus material more carefully and make the exams less ambiguous. Great speaker, but seems to be confused about inspiring confidence in students.
Garard rocks! He brings a lot of information and shows real life examples to what we are learning. he's funny and cute! He makes the subject interesting and motivates you to want to learn it. makes you work hard for your grade. and...hes really cool
He's great!! He is hard, but captivates his students through an energetic classroom climate, and he is eager to see his students succeed!!
Garard is a cool teacher. He's funny (or atleast tries to be) and does a good job of entertaining while he's teaching. I would definately recommend him as a teacher. He made me actually want to go to class.
Garard is great. His weekly quiz keeps your studies up and leaves you well prep'ed when midterms and finals roll around.
smart, take his class. hard but worth it. peace
The Man. Great Comm teacher, makes it easy to sit through and you feel like you are learning something unlike most other comm teachers at SBCC who just waste the hour and a half away showing stupid clips of movies.
Not easy, gives only minimum requirments, not "A" requirments. Go in for lots of help. Fair Midterm and Final. Good professor to have if planning to attennd UCSB...but sorry, he's not hot! :-P
I looked forward to seeing him in his hott Khaki pants everyday. He makes gorky( goofy dork) jokes, but thats what made him so much fun to be around. He knows his stuff...very intelligent and sincere. PERFECT!
dr g made class very enjoyable with his hilarious jokes and his smile which made of the girls in class melt:)
Garard is a great teacher, however his classes are hard. You never walk out of the classroom without learning something new. For those who are serious about possibly becoming a communication major you will find that the workload is managable, and you will walk away with developed research skills.
i felt like he didnt make the assignments clear especially the journals. they made my life hell. but the class was extremely interesting and i learned a lot
Death. I am suprised he got rave reviews with other students. I found him boring and unapproachable. He gives C's and D's out like candy. His class average for tests and finals are C- D+ and he thinks that is exceptable. Thanks to that long useless class I no longer want to be a comm major.
Awful. Class is long and drawn out. Journals are graded too hard. He has favorites and is very impersonal for being a comm teacher. He ruined my GPA along with all my friends. His mid-tern averagee is usually a D- at best. This guy is a dork not the man just does not get it. This guy is a dork not "the man" who ever said that is not accurate.
This is the best teacher ever. I took every one of his classes because he is awesome. Those people that think his class is long and drawn out dont know what they are talking about. He is interesting and a very knowledgable teacher. If you have a chance to take his class I would highly suggest it. He is goofy, fun and has great hott khaki pants ;)
garard teaches at a college level, which should be expected when you are in college. you have to come to lecture, study and visit office hours when you dont understand something or you wont get an A. if you try hard then youll do fine...he can tell if you are a slacker...comm majors should be prepared for upper division work
This guy is on a ****ing homework spree, he is a good guy and eveyrthing, but****! but man.... a guy can only do so much ****ing paper work! If you dont mind writing a**** load, this class is for you.
YAHHH GARARD YAHHHH you rock.. best teacher
he is ADORABLE!! all day he talks about his orange scooter!! he is hard, but he is worth it!
He's sooo hot! I looked forward to coming to his class just so I could hear the corny jokes and check him out! wa-hoooo!

Very hard but way worth it! HINT: GO TO HIM FOR HELP OUTSIDE OF CLASS, ESPECIALLY ON PAPERS. HE IS VERY WILLING TO HELP, YOU JUST HAVE TO MAKE THE EFFORT TO GO. HE WILL TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT TO DO TO GET A GOOD GRADE. He is also pretty funny I suppose, with all the vespa jokes. Attendance policy is strict. Midterms and finals are rough! Use classnotes as outlines and study extra info from the book and you'll do fine. HE ENJOYS BRAGGING ABOUT GETTING CHILI PEPPERS FOR BEING HOT...SO GO AHEAD...HUMOR HIM!!
He's tough - but totally gets your ready for the UC. Totally interesting!
Thank you so much for preparing me for the university system! All of those APA assignments really paid off! As long as you come to class, do the work, and study hard for the exams you should do fine. Thanks Dr. Garard!
both of these classes were great. they prepared me for my transfer and helped me to understand more of what a communication major really is. he is very helpful, challenging, and very knowledgeable in communication. definately take one of his classes!
Amazing professor that is interested in both the topic of the class and his students' sucess. Go to ALL classes (very important), do the reading (becuase of weekly quizzes), and if you need it ask for help- he is more than willing. After his classes UC is cake...
Dr. Garard is a very nice man. He is a good teacher who is passionate aboth the subject matter. His lectures are funny and interesting,(he talks about his family and vespa which is a nice break from theories), his tests are hard and he is a tough grader for papers. His class will either get you ready for UCSB, or make you not want 2 go there.
garard is the Hitler of communication!!! if you do not dedicate your entire existence to his class work then you are in for a rude awakening. Sure, he is funny, but his self-centered tangents become annoying over the semester. Sorry but none of us care about you or your stupid vespa or your constant babbling about your kids
I think Dr. Garard is a wonderful teacher and great person. His class is definately not easy...but it is still possible to get a good grade, just keep up with his work. His sense of humor and stories about his family and vespa keep the class upbeat and enjoyful. He's a very sincere and real person.
he is a hard teacher but he is a nice person. i would recommend putting in 100% effort in his class or you will fail. It is extremely important that you attend every class because even if you do not miss a quiz you will miss an in-class assignment.Don't rely on raising your grade from your tests or paper cause they are difficult!!
i prefer people not to take him! he is a nice person, however, he doesnt teach students much things during the classes! he seldom talk much about the textbook,i cant learn much from communication! i prefer people put 100% effort in order to get A !
Dr. Garard's teaching style has prepared me well for UCSB. If you do the work and put in the time you'll do really great at a University. Thanks Dr. Garard!
he is a nice person, very helpful, always answers my questions as soon as possible~ well-organized, clear! funny!
The classes themselves were really hard but Dr. Garard was an awesome teacher. I feel fully prepared for UCSB and I feel like a better student as well after that 288 paper! Put in extra effort to do well!!!!
Prof. Garard is an awesome teacher. I'm at UCSB now, and I feel so prepared. As long as you do all your work, you'll be fine. He's compassionate, funny, and a great lecturer. He keeps things interesting, and fun. I learned so much from him. I LOVE HIS VESPA!!!!
the class are a lot of work, you have to very motivated and willing to learn. It is all worth it becaure garard is an awesome teacher. Hes funny and keeps the class interesting!!!
Dr. Garard is the best teacher I ever had at City College! His class is intense and he expects a lot out of you. He is an extremely nice guy and if you work hard and truly want to learn, he will go out of his way to help you. Now I am at UC and I am more prepared because of Garard's classes. Can't believe this, but I actually miss his classes!
such a great teacher! so nice and helpful!
man this class was hard. journals were really difficult because he expects you to have insight parallel to his or you wont get that high of a grade on them. the midterm and final were the hardest tests i have ever taken but I got B's on both of them. you have to work really hard to do well but i guess thats what it takes to get to the UC. ThanksDrG
he is way too hard in the sense that he does not understand that we have other classes and can't learn the entire world of communications in 1 class!
I attended 3 different colleges, and Prof Garard was without a doubt my favorite professor. I took his class almost 5 years ago and still think about how much I learned from him. It was a lot of work but worth every effort. He was fantastic.
Best Teacher, but hard class. if you stay on top of your work and put in the extra effort you will do well. He is also really helpful on any question. Midterm is HARD just study study study
HE is an extremely hard teacher! He is a good guy and wants the best, but all of his assignments and tests are nearly impossible. A lot of people dropped his class. You will have a 15-20 page paper a presentation, and a final all within three weeks.
Funny professor, he is very engaging. If you are going through a difficult time personally though, I recomend not taking him. In the beginning of the semester I told him my mom was in the terminal stages of her cancer...he told me he would work with me, but when she passed away during midterms-he wouldn't let me take it. He dropped me =( kinda lam
Great Prof. Really prepared me well for classes at UCSB. Some call him a hard grader, but that's only if you don't do the work and the reading. More than ready to help out if you ask for it, and gives great feedback. The only warning is this: if you aren't a COMM major, watch out, you'll be converted! Thanks for teachng Dr. G.!
Took both 288 and 289, awesome teacher. Very motivated to teach and help. As per "15-20 page paper" and "Kinda lam" comments below, he is veeeeery clear on the syllabus and verbaly about what is required and expected for the course. If you're not prepared to work, well, you won't get the grade. Loved him as a teacher, fair and fun!
he's a nice enough guy, but his idea of doing a "great job" is a B-. how he grades his material isn't quite clear when he assigns projects/papers. and you can't hate on the vespas
Dr. Garard is an incredible professor. I took him for both 288 and 289, one after another in the same semester. I was able to maintain an A in both classes. Expect to work and to learn. He is amazing and deserves a huge thank you for preparing me for UCSB. Definitely take him, but expect to work!! In college, you cant expect to slack and pass!
Amazing teacher! Very interesting class. Hard grader, but if you attend class and pay attention the tests aren't bad at all. Thanks Dr. G!
so funny, very helpful, and I'm so glad that he teaches this class. I'm sure that you'll enjoy his class!!
AH-MAZE-ING. Best professor at CC! You will love his jokes, his lectures and will want to go to class. Garard is the coolest guy ever. Difficult paper and exams, but soooo worth it! He prepares you for the real world :)
Garard is my favorite professor! I am graduating UCSB this year and I can't think of another professor that has had a greater impact on my college career. You learn so much and his teacher! AMAZING! Garard is the BOMB!
Dr. Garard is the best. He scares you a little but honestly if you do exactly what he tells you and check in with him, you will do good and learn a lot. I am now a senior at UCSB and he is still my favorite prof!
The most amazing teacher ever! Don't miss class because most days there is a quiz or inclass assignment. You can't get by on the midterm or final w/o reading the book. The papers are challenging/time consuming, but if you're a hard worker there's no reason why you can't have a full schedule and get an A. Makes you excited about being a Comm major!
Dr. Garard is a really wonderful professor and makes the class fun and interesting but wow, hardest classes I have ever taken. I took his 288 and 289 and the same time, which is definitely NOT recomended! especially if you are taking other classes that are not easy A's. He is one of the most difficult graders I have ever encountered. Great guy tho!
Garard is by far the best professor I have ever had. He really cares about his students and is incredibly inspirational. He is incredibly intelligent and will make you a more intelligent person too. Do whatever you can to take his classes-he is life changing and you will be glad you did.
Not an easy class but Garard makes it worth going everyday. He expects a lot from his students and is not an easy grader but is always there to answer any questions you have.
GARARD IS THE BEST...DO NOT DOUBT THIS. In order to get an A you must go to class everyday. I recommend sitting in the front and participating in the lecture regularly. Take the online practice quizzes! The paper is the hardest assignment you will ever have in your college career. Do not procrastinate! Put in the time and you will be rewarded.
I took Garard for 289 over the summer and it was an awesome experience. The subject material is very interesting and if you sit in the front row and participate a lot so that he knows you it will serve you well. Come to class everyday and if you have any questions be sure to ask them, he likes it when students participate. Paper is time consuming.
Garard is one of the best teachers I had at SBCC. Comm 88/89 are difficult classes yet Garard finds a way to make them interesting and understandable. He is the most approachable teacher i've ever had and helps you with anything you need. The papers are of course difficult but with time and help from him, you'll be fine. I got a B in 88 and 89.
Had him for 288 and 289, He makes the lectures and class time fun and interesting, the papers are a little hard but not impossible. I would suggest taking him or cameron sublet for any comm classes
honestly this class truly reafirmed that i am meant to be a comm major. he is a wonderful teacher a bit intimidating at first but once you get to know him he is really a nice guy. his teaching style is clear and he makes his expectations known, the papers i suggest doing weeks ahead i did mine the night before and got a C my biggest regret.
easily the best comm professor at sbcc. Great guy with witty jokes. Learned a lot in his class and he follows the textbook precisely. Very organized and clearly structured class. Tests are challenging and the paper takes time. overall put in some effort and you ll get the A
Best comm professor in cc. Well organized, extremely clear on his teaching. Test and logs kind of challenging, but you learn a lot. Great and funny teacher.
Garard is the only teacher available to you for either 288 or 289, so you don't really have another option. Luckily, he is easily the best teacher I have had at my time here at SBCC. He gives you his expectations right up front and gives you a syllabus that he follows to a tee. He is organized and clear and makes class fun. Take him!
Garard is the BEST professor I have ever had. Be ready because both 288 & 289 are challenging. I took them simultaneously and wrote about 100 pages of essays. It's doable but NOT recommended unless you're mentally prepared & dedicated. Advice on papers: When you think you've done enough.. do more! Best Comm prof, hands down. Take him!
All of the recent comments sound like Garad wrote them himself. Same message no change in the dynamics of the wording. He likes to make people squirm over C's and D's like one person said he gives them out like candy. Let's see how this fall goes for some of my friends that will be in it.
Awesome teacher! Comm 288 and 289 are really tough classes but he is the best teacher i had at SBCC
Great professor, really tries to get everyone involved, interested, and thinking. Not an easy class but put in the effort by reading and outlining the chapters and its a breeze. Paper was somewhat difficult but once you have sources you will be fine. Write extra for both the logs and the paper and you will get a good grade if you make connections
Prof. Garard is a really great, likeable teacher. He is engaging and energetic, and makes an effort to involve students. That said, HIS CLASS IS HARD. I took 288 twice, failed it the first time, and got a B the second time. Be prepared to work hard, and learn a great deal about Comm. PS: bring up Vespa riding and your good for a 20-30 min tangent.
Garard is an amazing professor! Comm 289 is way more interesting than comm 288 but he makes the information in both classes very clear and keeps both classes interesting. He is HILARIOUS and keeps you focused by intertwining personal stories and anecdotes. Love this professor!
Garard is a wonderful person and is a great professor. He wants you to succeed in his class, but he is a tough grader and expects you to know the material. Class has a quiz once a week, one 1000 word essay and one 3500 word essay, a midterm and a final that are bluebook/multiple choice
i just transferred to ucsb and now realize how valuable lessons learned about writing research papers are. they really come in handy and not just for comm. i am currently writing a research paper, and a lot of people in my class have no idea how, but because of this class i do!
Do not take this class unless you are POSITIVE you are transferring to a comm program.
Garard is awesome! I was nervous about taking his class after reading comments on here, but he is extremely straight forward about what he expects. The class is not easy by any means, but if you are willing to put the work in you will be successful. One of the best teachers I have ever had! Love him! (& he is hilarious; loves vespas)
Garard is honestly one of the greatest professors I've had in my 2 years at SBCC! I LOVED going to this class. It's definitely challenging but so worth it if you out in the time and effort. He is so smart, so sweet and SO FUNNY!
The class is EZ if you put in the time & effort, Prof WANTS u to succeed, is excited to b in class and teach the material as long as u are excited 2 learn it. He wants to prep his students for transfer to UCSB and he does a good job of it if u put in the time n effort. Go c him in office hrs he's super helpful and an overall really nice guy
I love this class and Darin is an amazing teacher. He is very helpful and also makes the class interesting. I highly recommend taking the class.
Hands down one of the best professors at CC. He has an extraordinary teaching style, his expectations and the info. presented couldn't be clearer, and he is a really great guy. Cares A LOT about his students, will do whatever it takes to help as long as they are putting in the effort. Seems like he is always in a good mood. Clearly loves his job!
This guy is a legend. Helpful, understanding, enthusiastic, fair Dr.Garard is the best you can have . His tests and finals are very hard and for 288 look to write a 20 paper. If you think you could just get by in his classes think again and a second time after that. if you put your mind and effort in his classes you will be just fine... Good Luck
Garard is my favorite teacher at sbcc! His class is hard, and time consuming, but if you put in the effort you will do well! He's very helpful if you go to his office hours. He's entertaining and funny, you won't ever dread going to his class. He is obsessed with vespas. I couldn't recommend this guy enough! Take him!!
Best teacher I have EVER had!!!! Truly makes me enjoy school and makes me want to do well on all my assignments. I don't think I could ever find a better teacher :)
Dr. Garard is a GOD of SBCC. Not only are his lectures very entertaining that involve relatable videos, but he teaches the class in a way that makes you feel so involved and welcomed to learn. He is the best teacher I have ever had in my life. His midterms and tests are challenging but he gives you the necessary tools. Its up to you to succeed.
Garard is the best professor I have EVER had! He cares a lot about his students & will do whatever he can to help you succeed as long as you put in the effort. His class is difficult but his lectures help clarify a lot of material that is hard to understand- so make sure to go to every class and do the reading!
Garard is my favorite professor at SBCC! His class can be challenging but he is always ready and willing to work with you to help you succeed. 288/289 are the hardest classes in the major but he makes them interesting and understandable. He makes you want to come to class. I took both of his classes and I would take 10 more if he taught them.
AMAZING teacher. I took Comm 289 here before I transfer to UCSB which I highly recommend. It is a very, very hard class and you have to be ready to really work, but if you work hard, you will get a good grade. Lots of writing (and I mean good essays, not to do the night before). Garard is the most amazing professor I've ever had though! (:
A most awesome teacher that really cares for the students but you have to work for your grade, professional and structured, follows syllabus. Grade reflects effortachievement. Incredibly interesting and useful course, really makes you think. Highly recommended even if you don't have COMM as major. I will definitely read the textbook again.
This is my absolute favorite professor of all time, pay attention and do the reading and you are golden!! He makes is so that all students are able to succeed in his class! Best advice is to do the quizzes online from the text book! he uses them on his quizzes all the time, those are free points up for grabs!
He is hands down the best professor I ever had. He made the class extremely interesting - and everything we learned was extremely relevant. He's the reason I decided to stick with Comm as a major! I recommend everyone take a class with him!
This is my second semester with Garard and he is an amazing teacher. He engages with the students and loves what he does. His classes can be a challenge but if you apply yourself, read and take the time to use the resources you will set yourself up for sucess! Quizes every week! He is hilarious and relatable!
The class is fun, interesting, and challenging. His classes are not exactly an "easy a" but an A can be earned easily with the right amount of effort. This is because Garard really cares about his students, give helpful feedback, and tells students exactly what they need to do to succeed. He's also really down to earth and hilarious! Must take!
Ive been at city college for 3 years now, I've taken many classes. By far this teacher is my favorite. He explains what he wants in a crystal clear way. There are no surprises. He is not lazy and will work with you. Very down to earth and sympathizes with you. Tests are hard, so what grow up and study. If you are a comm major he is a must take!!!
I took both of his classes at the same time and he did warn me that it would be a challenge. However, he is an amazing professor and walks you through every step of the papers and assignments very carefully. I learned a lot in his classes and enjoyed his quirky humor. Be prepared to spend A LOT of time on his classes and don't skimp on studying.
I am devastated that I have no more classes left with this beautiful human. He makes his classes so interesting and is super down to earth. To be clear, even though he's super chill- he does challenge you. You have to work for that A but really if you show up, pay attention, do the assignments, study, you will be gucci. Definitely take his class!!
I fux with dr. garard. Best teacher Ive had at city college. I took a lot away from his class. He is a very wise fellow.
I would take these classes multiple times if I could! Major advice: don't let yourself fall behind! These classes are difficult, but only if you aren't willing to put out the effort and time that it takes to do well. Read the textbook, go to lectures, and be ready to dedicate a lot of time writing-you'll be happy you did! Garard is SO GREAT
I have had Dr. Garard for 2 separate classes and and I feel like he is the "Father of the Communication Lab" everyone adores him and he is absolutely always there for his students. We will miss him when we transfer. He truly prepares you for transferring. Although a tough grader, his classes are doable. You will have to work hard, but its rewarding
He presents the material very clearly and outlines exactly what he expects from his students over the course of the semester. He understands his classes are hard but still expects his students to deliver. Great lecturer, great person, and wants his students to succeed! I took both of these classes pass/no pass (I would have received C's in both)
He is the man
He is simply the best. I took Comm 288 with Garard this summer, and he lived up to all of these positive reviews. He is genuine about his passion for teaching. The material can be difficult, but he is organized and clear with his explanations. Not to mention, he is extremely patient and helpful. LOVED HIM. Take him and you will thank me
Garard is hands down the best professor at CC. I'm at UCSB now and I have still yet to meet a professor as amazing as he is. The material is hard, but he really does everything he can to make it easy for his students, but do your part too. If you are transferring to UCSB take his 288, 289 classes because the UC profs won't do it nearly as well
MAD GOOD VIBES.
The lectures are amazing but you are just another student in this class. If you are international - I won't recommend you to take his class. Too much testing and all about the grades, participation has nothing to say (weird because it is a communication class) I have never done this much in a class and I still got a C.
Garard is truly AMAZING! His 288/289 classes are difficult but he literally spends the whole semester setting you up to do well for the large paper due at the end. He is caring, his lectures are clear cut, and he explains the material in an understandable way. He's the reason I understand Comm so well now. If you put in time/work you'll be fine!
Best professor I have ever had! If you have any questions ASK FOR HELP. He is always willing to help so go to office hours!! Had him for two semesters and both classes were tough but definitely worth it when I received A's.
Amazing guy and professor. He really cares about his students and gives great feedback. Not an easy class, a lot of writing outside the class and definitely makes you work for an A. Lectures aren't boring, he's funny, and engaging. Not a class you can procrastinate in if you want to succeed. 10/10 would recommend!!
Would 100% take again! With his humor, straight forward lectures, outside of class access/help, and interesting course material it made waking up at 8am worth it! There is a good amount of writing and studying involved, but if you come to every class, pay attention, go to the tutor, and actually put in your best effort then you will succeed!
Prof. Garard is brilliant! When you go to class, you will learn all the information needed in order to succed! Tough grader when it comes to writing, you need to go into detail, but gives great feedback on where you can get better.
Will definitely prepare you for UCSB
While he is a nice guy and his lectures are interesting, he does not follow his grading criteria at all. Even if you do what is asked of you when you do the essays or study his midterm/final review sheet he finds a way to shock you and throw a curveball that you do not expect. Nice guy, inconsistent when it comes to his grading. Good luck.
Garard is an amazing professor! He cares more about his students than any other professor I've ever had, but his classes are difficult and he expects a lot. Both classes are totally manageable if you put in the work and seek help from him and the tutor. Don't procrastinate on the research papers:) Can't say enough good things about this man!
Gerard is hands down the best professor I have ever had. His classes are difficult and you must apply yourself, but it is extremely rewarding. The things you learn from his class are also extremely important and are things you will use forever. Highly recommend 289 & 288 but would NOT recommend taking together.
Garard teaches the hardest communication classes at SBCC. He's clear about what he wants from you and is ready and willing to support you all the way through. Lots of quizzes, papers, etc but if you show up everyday and show a desire to learn and improve, Garard will be there for you too. Great professor!
I took 289 and 288 with Garard during the same semester. They were both challenging classes but he makes the content so easy to grasp. He is truly the best professor you will every have and the material is easily retained. Highly recommend taking these courses at SBCC rather than UCSB!
He's a great professor but its a really hard grader! As an international student I had to work harder than usual. He is very demanding and annoying sometimes. But a nice guy for sure.
Professor Gerard made me love to learn. He is brilliant, funny, and always accommodating. Although his criteria is tough, if you put in the time and effort, you will receive what you deserve. His lectures are interesting, and I always felt what I was learning was relevant to my life and education. I highly recommend anyone to take his course.
Garard is my favorite professor that I have had in all my three years of college. He cares about each and every one of his students on a personal level, he makes his Powerpoints organized, and it is clear that his goal is for his students to absorb the information and do well on tests. That being said, you still have to work for that grade!
Professor Garard is an amazing and insightful teacher. He really cares about each of his students, is very helpful and understanding. He is my favorite prof at SBCC hands down and allowed me to grow so much as a student. I recommend following his prompts very closely and go to his office hours for help. He notices when you put in effort!
Best teacher I've had at sbcc so far. He actually makes his lectures really interesting and fun and is really outgoing. He tries to relate to his students a lot through lectures which makes them more interesting. Cares alot about his students and definitely gives you all the help to succeed. If you study and don't miss class you'll pass easily.
Dr. Garard is a real gem of a professor... truly the best Communication Professor on campus. Though both his courses are very challenging, he's there to help you every step of the way. While you have to work hard to earn your grade, his class is very rewarding! He's so passionate about communication and cares so much for his students!
Darin is one of the sweetest professors I've had thus far in my college career. He's very welcoming and clearly wants everyone to succeed. However, he grades papers like he's mad at you. I struggled to get an A on any of the "log" assignments which were just small weekly assignments. Super nice, and very caring, just weirdly tough on grading.
I think this is the best professor I've ever had at SBCC. He genuinely cares so much about all his students, always super helpful, responds quickly to any email or question. His lectures are actually enjoyable, I loved going to them which is a first for me. He also has a great sense of humor that just makes the class more fun. 10/10 teacher.
Dr. Garard is one of the best. Even though I did end up getting a C mainly because my log assignments and theory analysis paper were not developed enough, I learned so much. All I can say is do every extra credit discussion, start your theory analysis paper early, and use the self help quizzes to study for the midterm and final FOR SURE!
Although I had to take this course to transfer, it was not an easy course. A lot of studying is necessary to do well on exams, so 100/10 recommend the self-help quizzes!!! For the papers, please visit the tutors. It seemed as though he expected us to have top of the line essays, but he is a tough grader as is, so you have to really work.
Professor Garard is an excellent professor in the Comm. department. His lectures are engaging and informational. Grading is based on quizzes, logs (like mini-essays), a term paper, and two exams. He gives excellent feedback on all papers and assignments. There is also extra credit available.
Great professor, I understand why people loved his class but there was clear favoritism and it was very apparent. If you are looking for an easy A, I would look for a different class. This class will take up a significant amount of your time and there were 300-point papers, not including the midterm or final.
I'm taking Professor Garard's COMM288 and COMM289 courses at the same time and he is an excellent professor. He offers extra credit every week, is very clear with his grading criteria and genuinely wants his students to succeed. Although attendance isn't required, there is a sign-in sheet and the lectures are better in person. Also records lecture
I dont understand how people are giving him such good ratings, he is one of the worst professors that I have ever had. Expects you to understand everything from his lectures right away and doesn't give good feedback to help you succeed. 300-point papers with little to no help? No thanks, avoid this class if you can.
This was one of the more challenging classes i took at sbcc. However he was one of my favorite teachers the hard work made this class most rewarding. He is a great teacher if your not doing well it prob is because your not attending office hours and getting the help you need. The office hours he had made a ton of difference. He gives good feedback
Professor Garard was a tough grader, but I like that in teachers. He gave great feedback, made it really clear what he wanted and how my essays and theory logs could be improved. If you can take his feedback and adapt, your writing and analysis of communication theories will improve. Great class, smart teacher, and he's funny. 10/10 recommend
If you can find an alternative elsewhere please save yourself.
A great professor. Not only as a human being but as a academic as well. I didnt use enough enough effort in his class. But that is completely on me. If you try hard and put in the effort you will succeed
Absolutely amazing professor! Not only amazing academically, but also as a human. Super personable and friendly. Willing to work with his students in order to help them succeed. Overall, one of if not my favorite professor of all time. TAKE HIS CLASSES. I took both his comm 289 and comm 288 and they were both amazing!
BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!! My favorite SBCC teacher, so funny, kind, and actually puts effort into grading.
Great professor, I like his lectures. He makes them pretty interesting to listen to. Only thing, if you're online, everything is heavily proctored so you really have to study for the big exams.
Professor Darin is hilarious and truly cares about student success. His specific teaching style takes some adjusting, but using resources like the free textbook, study sessions, and tools like Unstuck AI can go a long way. Overall, a rewarding class if you put in the effort.
Garard is funny, caring, and smart. He is a great teacher and gives great lectures. He is a tough grader on papers and his tests are hard but as long as you study and don't procrastinate, you will succeed. He is also very understanding about absences and offers a live zoom every class. Also extra credit every week
Professor Garard was amazing this semester!!! Lots of lectures but made them enjoyable and something I actually looked forward to. The class may seem intimidating at first but he does a great job explaining and organizing all of the topics. He also offers extra credit each week which is pretty easy. Would highly recommend his class!
Professor Garad is one of the best teachers at SBCC. He truly cares about his students and wants them to do well. He is a tough grader but gives lots of feedback in how to improve. He also offers extra credit every week. His lectures are great he's really funny which make them enjoyable. The class is very manageable and is set up for you success!
He knows his stuff. He has two exams, both pretty difficult and are my only complaint as some of the questions aren't worded very well and the answers are pretty similar. Besides that, you write 3 2 page logs about a comm theory as well as a long final paper that takes a while.
Learned so much! well organized class
Although it was a hard class, Professor Garard aims to prepare his students for UC classes. The class is mainly just writing 3 essays, and a 15 page term paper towards the end, so get ready to write a lot. He was an amazing professor and cared about his students learning the material, I suggest his class for those wanting to transfer to a UC.
He is such a nice professor! I took both his 289 and 288 classes and really enjoyed them. He makes lectures very interactive which is fun and seems pretty passionate about what he is teaching. Fair amount of reading and work for both classes but he is super organized and helpful along the way. If you put in the work, you will succeed!
Professor Garard is great! He is engaging and is really knowledgeable in his craft. The structure of the class is more traditional, there are 2 heavy papers and a scantron mid-term/final. If you plan on transferring to UCSB for comm, these classes will properly prepare you. You will get out what you put in.
I am a visual learner and his lectures are great for retaining information. The notes in class work as a resource for the weekly 10 point open note quizzes. He gives lots of feedback on papers. He also gives extra credit opportunities every week for both classes. As long as you show up to class and take notes there should be no problem getting an A
Professor Garard is the best professor I have had at SBCC and teaches the content in a way that makes lectures enjoyable. He is super organized and will answer questions you ask very quickly. He loves teaching and it is clear through his knowledge on the subject. He is also hilarious and very cheeky, overall highly recommended!!
Hands down my fav professor I've ever had, genuinely the most charismatic man ever I loved coming to class and was so sad I had to take 288 online. TAKE 289 BEFORE 288. Both classes have very long research papers that you're prepared for throughout the semester, but I promise doing 289 first helps significantly with the big 288 paper.
Prof Gerrard is absolutely hilarious! Funniest professor I've had. He cares for you and wants to help you succeed. His class is highly respected and the students are outgoing (comm class duhhh)! If u don't need this class don't take it tho, it is so so much work. 289 is easier than 288. In person is better than online too!
I am a straight A student and this is the only class I did not pass. He was very rude to me and is not flexible AT ALL.
10/10 professor and class. It is a manageable work load with an extra credit discussion every week. One big paper but plenty of time to get it done. 3 exams that are just like the quizzes. Professor Gerard is so funny and you can tell he cares about his students and the content he is teaching.
Such a great professor and a great class, you can tell he really cares. As long as you attend class regularly and stay on top of assignments you'll pass easily. There is one long paper that you should definitely look at starting early, other than that there is only a midterm and a final, both can be passed as long as you study. Best professor ever.
Professor Garard is amazing! I took his 289 and 288 classes in person over the past year. Do NOT take both courses in the same semester. There is a long research paper in each class (around 10-15 pages), but he gives you more than enough time to get it done. The textbook practice quizes r gonna be ur best friend for the midterm and final. Excellent
