A chrystal clear look at the wonderful world of Old, Middle, and Early Modern English literatures. Take him, he's awesome!
Very challenging, but worth every class. Most fun I've had in an English class. Prof. Merrill was, however, distractingly handsome.
This was the funnest English class I have ever taken. I never knew someone could get as excited as Bro. Merrill does about English or that I could actually look forward to this class. I am impressed with this guy. He has a good curriculum and knows his students. You won't regret being in his class.
This teacher is very fun, and has some amazing one-liners. He makes english understandable and fun, to quote him...understanding english "makes the sky bluer, grass greener, and relationships deeper." If you get the chance to take a class from him, do it!
He's great, he's really funny and he's interesting:)
he is soo funny... probably one of the best english teachers.. if you get the chance take a class from him.
This was a tough class, but worth every minute spent. Brother Merrill is a great teacher, passionate about the subject, and very knowledgeable. I laughed every class. I would have to say it is the best english class I have ever taken.
Bro Merril is a great guy. He is hilarious as well as extrememly intelligent. my vocabulary has grown just listening to him speak in class. Loved his class, and loved him as a teacher. hes the kind of guy who speaks like a british person without the accent
Awesome class. Hands down one of the best teachers at this school. He made a boring course fun. I hardly ever missed class because I didn't want to miss his jokes and enthusiasm. Highly reccommend it!
Brother Merrill is very entertaining and always has something funny to say. He made the class interesting. There are quite a few papers to write but he is very lenient and caring. I enjoyed coming to his class and listening to his comments. He makes the class fascinating.
Bro. Merrill is one of the best teachers ever! His class can be challenging and there are lots of papers, but he is very willing to help. He is passionate about the subject. He makes class so entertaining that I don't like to miss! You can tell he cares about both the subject and his students.
He is SO funny and such a fabulous teacher! He always is willing to help students with whatever question they need answered. He has been one of my favorite professors!

Br. Merrill is a hoot! The funniest teacher i've ever had. He gets off topic at times and goes on half hour funy tangents, but that's o.k. Especially when I can't stop looking at his rock hard abs ;)
I absolutely loved Brother Merrill's class. I was not very excited to take English 311, but he made it so fun. He is very entertaining and makes class worth going to. He is also very understanding, laid back and treats his students very well. Highly recommended!
Bro. Merrill is awesome! I didn't like english before this class and I still don't really love it, but Bro. Merrill helped me know a lot more about it and how it can be fun.
He has been one of my favorite teachers so far! I had him for English 111 and it helped me make my decision in who I should pick as a teacher for English 250. He's funny, cool, smart, and he makes english fun. I would highly recommend him.
He is SOOOO funny. Great teacher, very enjoyable class!
Brother Merrill is tons of fun! He cracks me up! He does a great job of making the subject material interesting. Oh, and he absolutely loves wikipedia!
Awesome Teacher!!! I loved his class. He is very funny and makes class very enjoyable and something to look forward to. He is very helpful and will help you want to learn and come to class! I highly recommend his classes!
Bro. Merrill made Shakespeare more fun than it ever should have been. Great teacher, funny, and drop dead gorgeous! Highly recomend this guy.
Great. Easy overall and works with you if there is a problem.
He's not easy, but the class is great. You'll learn a ton, but there is still a lot of work. His lectures are always fascinating, but beware of his quizzes, they're tough!
Brother Merrill's class was the best English class I've ever taken. It was definitely challenging, but he is hilarious and makes class very enjoyable. He explains everything very clearly and teaches very well. I would take another one of his classes without hesitation. "Hi, Brother Merrill! I know you are reading this! Haha!"
I didn't think that he was very hard. His quizzes may be a bit tricky but as long as you read the assignments you'll do fine. His assignments are not difficult. He sets it up nicely to save you a lot of work. Great class, he's quite entertaining with his lame jokes.
AMAZING TEACHER! :)He has a great passion for this subject...it's fun watching how excited he gets. He explains things clearly and makes it fun to learn. His quizzes are tough, but don't worry. He's willing to help you with papers and he genuinely wants you to succeed. Also, he is so FUNNY. I have cried from laughing so hard! You will love him!
Bro. Merrill is great. He's full of life and energy. He is incredibly fair and kind also. Get this honkie on your schedule!
A fun teacher, enjoyable class. Class content/what we were expected to know wasn't clear. Didn't have a very good syllabus, and the assigned text was acknowledgedly useless. Maybe he'll get it together in a semester or two. Likes YouTube and the internet.
A great teacher. Class is ALWAYS a blast!!! I didn't enjoy the papers though, I thought they were more busy work rather than helpful. Pattern One Sentences were my favorite. "Have a good day Brother Merrill, you sassy teacher."
Funny and helpful
Anyone who likes dry self centered humor shouldn't take this class. It seems like a lot of people liked Merrill. His complicates his explanations to the point where you have to get an explanation for the explanation -he was just too big headed and self consumed for me.
I find him to be hysterical and good at what he teaches. Unlike some teachers I've had, he does not seem bored with the subject he teaches. He makes you laugh. For ex: "I better shut the door; I don't want anyone getting a free dose of grammatical correctness."Hehe. I love it! Wish I had it everyday! The subject is a bit hard, but he always helps.
Seriously, he's my favorite teacher on campus. I would take whatever class he teaches-even bug dissection or something, in fact that would be pretty funny. TAKE HIM!
This professors excitement about his subject is surpassed, narrowly perhaps, by his dexterity in white-board marker selection. His handwriting is easily read at a twenty foot distance, and he is never short of the sort of short winded story which would be reasonably uninteresting but for excellent presentation.
Brother Merrill is completely amazing! He is an excellent teacher, and is very entertaining. Sometimes when a teacher is entertaining you don't learn anything, in Brother Merrill's class you never stop learning. You can tell he truly loves the subject he is teaching. He gets so excited that he almost jumps out of his skin while diagraming sentences
If I hadn't taken Brother Merrill, I would seriously hate this class. Now its not so bad, I actually enjoy it! Cherry scented marker...hehe!
Bro. Merrill is a way fun teacher. He knows his subject well, leads ineresting and helpful discussions meanwhile making the entire class laugh hysterically!! TAKE NOTES! midterm and final are pretty much based off of them. do the readings and you will pass for sure! AWESOME teacher. def take him if you get a chance, you won't regret it!
Brother Merrill is hilarious and makes learning about Brit lit fun. His tests are really difficult, however, as are his quizzes, so you'll want to study a lot. If you want to learn a lot and laugh really hard, take Brother Merrill.
Hilarious
He is a really great teacher. Ignore commments from students who say he is "self-centered and has a dirty humor." They probably just need a hug. He's halirious and says how it is. PAY ATTENTION TO COMMENTS he makes about the text. They are on the online quiz. Just do the reading and you will be fine. Oh yes.. go to class! attendence is required
Great teacher and well educated. He knows what he's talking about but most importantly he's down to earth. We were taught to look at life in a more mature way. Way funny, uses the online videos a lot and ties it very well with his classes. He's just an awesome teacher that actually cares for the class and if you annoy him, he'll let you know!
Coolest teacher ever. I'm taking his classes for fun now. I don't need them at all.
So funny. You won't regret taking a class from him. I'd say it's pretty easy. If you go to class and take notes the test and quizzes will be no probelm at all. Very Entertaining. 10 Quizes, 2 Tests, 1 group project, 5 short papers (1 1/2 pages double spaced) and 1 long paper (3-5 pages).
He was a really good teacher! He used a lot of big words, so sometimes I would be confused. But after a while I got used to it, so it was all good! Take his class for Humanities, you won't regret it!!
BROTHER MERRILL, I KNOW YOU'RE READING THIS!! By far one of the best teachers I have EVER had--his dry sense of humor made me want to come to class every day, just to see what he'd say next. His teaching style made lessons easy to understand; enjoyable, even. I will be taking many more classes from Brother Merrill.
Ask him about Whale Bear Lion or however that music video goes at utahwolfproductions.com. AmAzInG teacher. Great insights and lessons. SOOO FUNNY!!! I loved the work. Even the group work even if we got together a lot. Be sure to read and take notes and you'll do just fine. He has amazing extensive vocab. I wish all my teachers were like him :)
He was awsome!!! I loved how you could never know exactly what he was going to say when he came into class. I always enjoyed the class. The group projects were hard but doable. And pay attention to the things he says about what is high art and what's not. You'll do better if you do.
One of the best teachers ever. Actually learned things and had an interest for a subject I wasn't into.
The world is a better place because Merrill is in it spreading a great wealth of information and teachings.
Bro.Merrill is a great teacher, love his sense of humor he kept it interesting.
Greatest teacher for a humanities class EVER! No seriously no joke! He's fun, he's cool, he's funny, really smart, and actually makes the material in class seem interesting and exciting to learn! As long as you take notes and read the texts he assigns...you'll ace the class for sure!
He helps you appreciate art more but that is about it. i was lost most of the semester not understanding what he was talking about and i completely diagreed with a lot of his interpretations of art. kind of pushy of his ideas. i would not recommend him.
An inspiring, fun, and attentive teacher that stretches you to become your best. He truly cares about each and every individual and instills within each student a personal desire to become more cultured in the arts and more aware of the world around us. I highly recommend him!
Awesome teacher! Makes me laugh everyday... And really makes the subject fun and understandable.
Brother Merrill is an awesome teacher. he is alot of fun and made everyone laugh all day everyday. I didnt understand most of the stuff we did but i still had a good time :) if you want this teacher you have to go to youtube.com and search english professor singing!!!! its totally worth taking the class.
His clothing is questionable...especially on bow tie Fridays but I love him anyways... He is the coolest SMASHMALLOW!!!
Hey student who said he was a complete suckar you should learn to spell and then shut your face. He is a great teacher and as long as you pay attention and do your work you will be fine. Know your odyssey well because he loves it very much so. He is a funny and very entertaining teacher. He is great at his job and changes your mind set on art.
Bro. Merrill is an AWESOME teacher. He is soooooo funny!!! however, there is one thing... he is distractingly handsome... haha
I enjoyed his class. He is a really good teacher and wants to make sure you understand. However, the final is a little out of wack with what the class covered. Some questions were really good...others were giberish in comparison to what was covered through homework and in class discussion. Good class, Poor final
Brother Merrill is a fantastic teacher! His class is one of the classes I like to call a "hold it class". He is hilarious and is constantly talking about something that I find interesting and I'm afraid to leave the class to go to the bathroom in fear I'll miss something funny or intellectual that he has to say, hence the "Hold it class".
Starting out, I really really enjoyed this class. The only disappointment was when I started to realize I was getting a B, when I should've really had an A. I don't like the online quizzes..the questions are kind of misleading and its hard to know his preferences in group projects. But overall, waaaay funny and interesting teacher. Love him!
Bro. Merrill is a good teacher. He uses the book a lot. His quizzes are a little tough, but do the readings and you'll be fine. He gives both a take home final and midterm-which is probably the hardest part of the class. But he is very entertaining and will make you laugh.
This professor is THE MAN!!! I was president of the Irish Culture Association and asked Bro Merrill to speak frequently on mythology. As a native Irishman, I was extremely impressed with his cultural knowledge and his now excellent Gaelic ;) GIVE THIS MAN A RAISE!!!
Most Amazing teacher ever! I would highly recommend him, especially for Medieval literature. He is very passionate about Chaucer, Milton, and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Plus, he is hilarious! Bro. Merrill inspired me to get my Masters in Medieval literature and I will never forget his influence . . . or the fermented yak's milk.
Love/Hate. Uses huge words you wont understand. Follow the syllabus or you will be totally confused! The online quizzes are very difficult. Questions were multiple choice but had misleading, even deceptive answers and often involved concepts not covered in class. Great teacher though, worth the stress and multiple group projects. I learned a lot!
Brother Merrill is awesome! I would highly recommend his class. There were times I was overwhelmed with the required work (especially for a Humanities class), but overall I had a great experience. He is very wise and extremely knowledgeable. If you are looking for an interesting and fun class, take one from him! He's the best.
LOVED THIS CLASS!!! He is a way good teacher and i swear he knows EVERYTHING! SO entertaining and really good classes. The quizes cometimes were challenging but not too bad. would highly highly recommend taking it way worth it!
This is a fantastic course that has only been enhanced with the installment of mood lighting. With made up stories to make himself sound manlier he keeps the crowd happy and impressed. His outfits are fabulous, new fashion statements everyday. Be careful, however, that you don't confess your appreciation for Harry Potter (continued in next comment)
(continued from comment below)If you do, he may threaten to hunt you down, kill you, and insult your family. His love for Lady Gaga, Thomas Kinkade, and Laura Croft is as evident as his love of art. This love is most visible when he describes the artistry involved in Lady Gaga's music, lyrics, and (most of all) outfits. HE'S AWESOME TAKE THIS CLASS
Great professor and very intelligent, very impressed with how he teaches. Very insightful. Great perspective on religion and life.
Like an older mark wahlberg, refreshingly helps you to appreciate art and the world around you. A lot of fun and really tries hard to make dull subjects interesting. Lots of reading and a good number of group projects, pull your weight and you'll do fine. His night class really isn't so bad. This university is so much more the better with him.
Hilarious and ubber intelligent! Most of the time you want to write down everything he says because he is so funny, but you have to look up the words he uses. Listen and take notes and you are so good for the quizzes. He really knows his stuff and his exams are open-book. You can't get better than that!
Brother Merrill is FANTASTIC! I absolutely love class, I completely dreaded taking this humanities class before the semester but it has most definitely turned into my favorite class. He will explain anything you need him too, he's funny which makes class WAY worth attending, quizzes aren't bad. TAKE THIS CLASS, HE IS SO AWESOME!
You'll know you worked hard because getting an A really means something in his classes. Great guy, fun to learn from, no complaint.
I definitely would recommend Bro. Merrill. He is enthusiastic about what he does and tries to make it fun for the students. Projects aren't too hard so long as you can argue your case well. Take this class!
Bro Merrill says some of the funniest stuff ever. I always looked forward to his class and I loved getting there early because he loves to play funny youtube clips (Jan Terri anyone?) Pretty easy work load, just do your reading. Great professor, great class!
He is very down to earth, and his teaching methods are humorous and I got a lot out of them. There were random times when we didn't get to the lesson until 10 minutes before class ended, and sometimes he'd spout out words like "truckulence" or "Bark like a Seal", but he's one of those original minded teachers thats worth all the work he gives out.
Class is mandatory but I never wanted to skip. Be patient w/him, it took a few weeks 4 me to understand his humor but he's a kick. I loved his class, it was a lot of outside work w/groups, but after the 1st group assignment it went by quickly. Tests are all on iLearn, he hates the test center as much as we do!
Very clear on wat he wants from the students. Has a great sense of humor that keeps the class awake and listening.
Awesome teacher! I've taken several of his classes and loved them all. He has great insights and a healthy amount of humor in sharing his extensive knowledge. Tests are not as big a deal as just going and learning. Several papers on topics or texts that you prefer to write on, which is nice. Highly recomended! "that was a good teacher."
Bro. Merrill is a great teacher! He is so funny. He has a passion for teaching and loves students. I've learned a lot in the class and have more of an appreciation for art.
I loved going to his class! He is passionate about what he teaches, which makes it easier and more enjoyable. It's important to go to class and pay attention, which can sometimes be quite a task because he is distractingly handsome!
The quizzes were terrible. I failed almost every one. He expected 50 pages of reading in the odyssey. SO FUN THOUGH. I loved the class. Awesome humor, if I had a tape recorder I could sell his humor recorded on tape. He is hilarious. People get offended because of their low intelligence. Class was galactically awesome. WORD!
I do have to say, he IS distractingly handsome. He has a huge vocabulary and will MAKE you appreciate art because of his passion for it. Hilarious, and totally entertaining, not just because he's way hot.
I posted the comment below and it is only partly true. He is not the "WORST TEACHER EVER", he is quite the opposite. He is soooo funny. Seriously take him...You'll love him. He is clear and by far the happiest man I have ever met. He makes Humanities enjoyable.
He goes on to rate my professor during class to ridicule us on our rating of him, BUT he is the best teacher I have ever had and I have never learned so much and gained such a passion for the material taught.
This teacher is so RAD!!!!! Really he's awesome! You will learn so many cool words if you take him. And he's funny! As far as the quizzes go just read what he tells you to read and you'll do fine. They really aren't hard if you just do the work and go to class. But ya one of the coolest guys I have ever met! LIQUID GOLD!!!!!
This class was by far one of my favorites. BRO MERRILL IS AWESOME! he was recommended to me talking to a random guy on the salt lake express. he kept going on about him and so i remembered the name, took the class and now i know what he was talking about. Bro merrill is freaking hilarious and IT WOULD BE A MISTAKE NOT TO TAKE HIM! so do it. now.
Brother Merrill is easily one of the best teachers that I have had. He cares about his students and tries to help us understand what he is teaching. Yes, he uses big words but he also defines them. Also if you don't pay attention then yes the quizzes are hard. There have been a few tricky questions though. You won't regret taking him, I promise.
"By the look of you, you haven't come here to bob for apples." Before taking this class with Bro. Merrill my knowledge of what a work of art is was very limited. Now that I have taken this class I can honestly say that my knowledge has grown and I am grateful for it. I rather enjoyed taking this class and it was one of my favorites this semester.
Brother Merrill is HILARIOUS! He gives you all the information you could possibly need to know for the quizzes, just be there and take good notes. He is really interesting and really expands your knowledge. He really gave me a deeper appreciation for art and made it a really fun experience.
Great teacher- very entertaining. Uses pictures that makes the class great! Overall AWESOME. Don't take the class from any other teacher!
Merrill's skill with the mother tongue could arguably earn him a spot in the pantheon of English Language demigods. He's the OED wrapped in tweed and a bow tie. If you love words, he's your man. All others seem hebetudinous by comparison. P.S. Only idiots skip class. You'll learn more in 1 hour with Merrill than in an entire semester elsewhere.
Brother Merrill is by far the best professor I have had in my 4 college years. He is funny, passionate about what he teaches but not boring at all. He makes his classes fun and he really just wants his students to learn but in an energetic way. Great guy and great class.
Quizzes were difficult. I read everything, took notes and reviewed notes. Majority of questions were fair, but others were too specific to remember. 5 qestion quizzes. Each quiz = 20 points. If you miss one you get an 80%. In this respect performing well even if you studied was difficult, but Brother Merill's awesome. If your worried, talk to him.
I loved this class. I started the semester dreading it but Brother Merrill was great. I have come out of the class with a better understanding of art. He is truly Liquid Gold!!!
Really funny, the final is take home but a beast! You can tell he enjoys the subject.
This class was extremely entertaining! There was not a day I didn't laugh about something Brother Merrill said. We learned a plethora of large vocabulary words and watched some very enriching youtube videos. I learned something new every day. Brother Merrill is a great teacher who cares about his students and works hard to help. Highly recommend!
Extreemly tough class! Hard to get an A. Be prepared to do a lot of studying, and trying to figure out what the answers might be on the quizes and test. The teacher is Amazing and is super funny but you will be forced to work for every inch of your grade..
Brother Merrill is a great teacher. His lectures are entertaining and easy to follow and understand. His quizzes can be a little difficult but normally if you do the reading, it's not a problem.
History of the English Language is by far my favorite class that I have ever taken! Brother Merrill is an amazing teacher! He's always fun and entertaining! You will never regret taking a class from him!
Brother Merrill is an entertaining Professor. He has a passion for Medieval Literature. Many of the texts are tough to read and some of the translations are corny, but he helps you through it. His class is never dull!
not hot! but way awesome.
Brother Merrill was a riot! He made the material fun to learn, and even dropped the five page paper in favor of a fun-filled presentation of Sir Gawain. He even extended our ten-page paper. As tough as he is, he's a great teacher, and you will not be disappointed! (Also, record his classes. His jokes are not ones you want to forget.) :D
Funniest teacher you will ever have! He is seriously a riot. His class was my favorite class of the semester. It's easy to pass this class, all you have to do is read the books (That's why it's called great books) He really helped me to grow in my understanding of the different concepts brought up in the books. It's great!
Just imagine the God Thor, shirtless, tan and a little shorter. He is so gallant! Man, I am even starting to palpitate a little.
AHHHH!!! Bro. Merrill is so much fun! I really enjoyed his class and he is soooooo funny and so quotable!
Bro. Merrill is hilarious. His love for the English language is contagious and dorky. This class isn't too difficult, but it isn't a walk in the park. Don't be mistaken: this is essentially a linguistics class. Take it if you can!
This was my favorite class of the semester! Bro. Merrill is very funny and I loved his lectures. My only problem was that he kept changing his syllabus which was confusing. By the end though it was worked out and I was able to learn a lot. One of the few classes that I preferred the professor to lecture in. He has great insights and is very funny.
He is number one all others are number two or lower. Seriously this class is awessome and he makes it very enjoyable. If you like movies you will love this class
Brother Merrill is a fantastic teacher! He is very helpful, & truly wants his students to succeed. The work is relatively easy; you just have to do it! I highly recommend taking his class. I heard from a lot of people that the Heroic Journey class was a waste of time, but it definitely wasn't with Bro. Merrill. It was entertaining and educational!
Bro Merrill is fair and is willing to listen to reason so if you have an issue he is willing to listen also classes were entertaining and you learn a lot he can get side track but he has the ability of taking any tangent and making it work with what he wanted us to learn that day. Don't be afraid to speak up even if you have an opposing view
Bro. Merrill is the best! His vocab usage is out of this world. Smart and easy on the eyes haha! He is so funny when he lectures that you actually want to come to class and listen. He doesn't spend the whole time lecturing though he is great at directing insightful class discussions. I took this course just for fun and I am glad I did.
Merrill is one of my favorite teachers here at BYU-I, this class was a little challenging because it is in fact a language course, not a history course but even if a subject is hard Merrill is still fun and makes the subject less stressful. I always recommend him.
Really great teacher and super awesome guy. He's way funny and you can just tell he's smart, but not in a pretentious way. the class was fun and insightful and i would definitely recommend taking this class from him
He's an excellent professor with exceptional wit, but keep in mind that his quizzes will murder you in your sleep and then again in your waking hours if you aren't thoroughly prepared for them. It's very evident that he cares for the subject and for the ability of students to THINK rather than just regurgitate mindless drivel.
I didn't realize this was a medieval lit class when I signed up for it, and I didn't have a lot of interest when I first started it, but he was such an excellent teacher I loved going to class, and he made it very interesting. He knows his stuff and is passionate about what he does. I will take another class from him.
Loved Bro Merrill! Rather difficult class but fascinating. He's hilarious and very opinionated, so don't take a class from him if you are easily offended. Loved it!
Brother Merrill was great. I learned a lot from his class and have improved greatly in my writing skills. I really enjoyed his lecture and insights as well.
Brother Merrill was by far one of the hardest teachers I have ever taken a class from. That being said, if you want a good grade in his class, Brother Merrill will give you every opportunity to succeed. His papers may be difficult, but he is willing to go over them with you. If I were not graduating soon, I would take him again. No doubt about it.
Brother Merrill is so funny. His class was easy and he was always more than willing to hear students out, work with them, and help them. He follows a lot of the original English grading criteria, which is nice because nothing is a surprise. Definitely recommend.
Brother Merrill is a truly exceptional educator who makes medieval history come alive in the minds of students. He is hilarious, but at all times respectful of students. His lectures are dazzlingly sophisticated and unstructured. He's on the shortlist of three or four professors in the English department who excel beyond their colleagues.
Brother Merrill's interesting, haha. If you can't work without a structured, punctual, focused class, don't take from him. But if you can adjust, DO IT. He's incredible and hilarious and a great guy to get to know, despite his amazing lack of organization or focus. Take lots of notes, read the chapters again before the quiz, expect quizzes up late.
I am not interested in Medieval Literature in the least, but Brother Merrill made it worth it. His lectures are amazing, you will learn more than you ever thought you could possibly know, and at the same time, he is hilarious. Such a great class, I'm sad that it's over. Such a great guy!!! All the reading can be found online, don't buy the book.
This guy was a fantastic prof. I never liked midieval english, but he made it so interesting that it was hard not to want to get involved! He has a wonderous vocabulary. He does go off on tangents but always ties them back into the lesson.
The class was amazing! If you can vote for the feast as a midterm option.
He is the only one allowed in class to be ever be overly distracting. His favorite animal is a Mantis Shrimp. Make sure you take his class and ask him about how much he loves his dog. All of his ties are themed and correlate with each lesson. He not only sings the songs of medieval birds, he also reads stalker poetry. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
If you want to make a great first impression, say this on the first day: "By the looks of you didn't come here to bob for apples?" He will seriously love you, i'm sure you will get an A!
A funny and engaging teacher who really know's his subject and does everything he can to make it interesting to his students. He provides every opportunity for his students to succeed if you need help or don't understanding talk to him and he will be happy to help. He can sometimes go off on tangents but they are always entertaining.
He is SO funny. Sure he gets off topic, but usually it applies somehow. He's really smart and arrogant, but it's a funny self-depreciating arrogant. I enjoyed his class immensely, and have a book full of Bro Merrill quotes. I learned a lot about Chaucer from him. Only thing I disliked: memorizing twenty middle English lines. That was tough.
Brother Merrill is passionate about what he does, he makes everything come to life. I learned so much in this class. He has become a hero of mine. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Brother Merrill is everything that I want to be in my life. He is perfect in every way.
I LOVE his class. Yes, there is reading but it's a Lit class and is spaced out enough that it isn't overwhelming. I LOVE Brother Merrill and would definitely take another class from him. Easy HW, and essays are easy to write.
Brother Merrill is a teacher unmatched in his passion for his subject, and life in general. He's fascinating to listen to, but I recommend keeping a dictionary on hand (the man dumbs down his vocabulary for no one)! His only shortcoming is that he can be crazy disorganized, but he typically admits to his mistakes and is flexible with students.
I had two classes with Brother Merrill this semester and he's absolutely fantastic. You can tell he really loves his subject. However, there have been a lot of issues with disorganization. So if you're going to take this class, make sure to stay on top of ALL assignments and readings. Also, he goes off topic a lot, so be aware of that as well.
Honestly, I expected more from this teacher because he's the department head. I didn't know my grade until it was put into the school system. I had no respect for him after a while. He never knew what we were doing class and literally just showed up talking about what was on his mind. There was a 20 page paper with no instruction.
Brother Merrill is highly knowledgeable about nearly everything to do with English. His lectures are of high quality and I found myself enjoying nearly all of them. The only thing I struggled with was a little disorganization on his part when it came to grades. I had no idea where I stood until the class was over!! But his class was amazing!
Brother Merrill was a great teacher, very funny. He did get off topic a bit and was a bit scatter brained, but overall I did learn a lot from his class.
Smart dude
He was a really funny teacher that tried to help you understand the best he could but still made you work for the grade you want.
Brother Merrill was really interesting and funny towards the beginning of the semester. He was always really disorganized and he was never on I-Learn. He doesn't calculate any grades until the very end of the semester. So you don't know your grade until maybe five days after the semester actually ended. Very frustrating and not fair.
Brother Merrill is super awesome. He is very intelligent and I have learned a lot from him. He can go off on tangents but they do apply to what he is teaching about. He is really passionate about it the English language and it really does show.
I can't stand how he graded things. So unorganized and so ignorant about problems you need help with. If you have to take this class, PLEASE take it from someone else who cares about the students and their needs.
He doesn't respond to emails or phone calls. He enters grades incorrectly and never knows how to correct them using the I-Learn system. He didn't enter grades until two weeks into Christmas break. And they were all the wrong grades, he even told us they were. He doesn't know how to fix it either! So happy I never have to take his class again.
I've taken several classes from Brother Merrill and have worked with him through campus programs. His students are top priority. He's not the only professor who doesn't use iLearn a lot. If you're coming to school to learn, take his class. Otherwise it seems you'll be disappointed that education required your effort. He's an amazing teacher!
Taking a class from Brother Merrill is a delightful experience, but not all delightful experiences are easy. His class was tougher than the average class I took here but it just means I had to learn more. He doesn't use iLearn but he also doesn't claim to use iLearn. He's smart and funny and as long as you're willing to work, class is a blast.
Passionate, open-minded, delightfully witty, and unapologetically brilliant. This is the kind of teacher you want, unless you're weird.
Bro. Merrill's the best! He gives really helpful feedback on papers and is always willing to help students. He is really passionate about English. I learned so much in this class. Take it if you get a chance!
Dr. Merrill is passionate about his subjects and is really smart. His lectures are fun and interesting and he has a great sense of humor (snazzy dresser too). As with any lit class, there is a lot of reading, but he is fair and considerate of students' time. Cons: you have to email him if you want your grades, he isn't so good at giving feedback.
Brother Merrill's lectures are interesting but that's about it. He gives you less then a weeks notice for major papers and provides little feedback. The semester is halfway over and he hasn't gotten any of our papers back yet. Very unprofessional, disorganized, and disappointing. If you need any sort of structure, avoid taking his class.
Brother Merrill's class is wonderful! He is very passionate and knowledgeable about his subject, and he is enthusiastic and funny. He can be slightly disorganized at times, but I still learned so much, and thoroughly enjoyed his lectures. Make sure to refer to the syllabus regularly for assignments and big papers, because he doesn't use I-learn!
He has stolen the spot for my favorite teacher at the university. He is witty and fun, but also incredibly helpful for my writing. Unlike most classes, I enjoy the entire time that I am in his lecture. I feel like he truly cares about his students. I really can't say enough good things about him. The work can be hard, but it is always worth it.
He is really funny, super smart, very cheerful, and passionate about what he teaches. His lectures are fabulous and I would take him again. I love that you can ask any question and he never makes you feel stupid for asking. If you have any issues you can meet with him and talk it over. Be prepared and work hard and you will learn so much from him.
Bro. Merrill is awesome. Class was usually a lot of fun and typically felt like a break in the day. He takes the time to explain things until you understand and has clear expectations. A lot of quizzes & everything is fair game so you have to pay attention in class. However, the amount of papers made it difficult to produce quality work sometimes.
This semester Brother Merrill has become one of my favorite teachers I have ever had before. He's hilarious, and always makes coming to class worth it. Though he does not use I-Learn, which is hard sometimes, he is easy to get a hold of and can tell you your grade. I would take every class with him if I could, he makes everything more interesting.
Brother Merrill is a very funny teacher. He is very passionate about the subjects he teaches. Do not be afraid to ask questions. If he uses words you don't understand, ask the meaning. Also, don't be afraid to ask for his help. Be prepared to read a lot, and whatever you do, don't procrastinate. Make sure you read the assigned reading carefully.
Brother Merrill is one of the absolute best professors I have ever had. He lays everything out for you perfectly at the beginning of the semester with a syllabus and schedule. He may not remind us in class about the assignments because of the schedule, but it's college, that should be expected. But he will clarify anything. Amazing teacher!
If you have the oppertunity to, you HAVE to take Brother Merrill. He's amazing and I've taken him a few times. Sure his quizzes are hard, but you learn so much from them. Read the assignments CAREFULLY and take good notes then review before class.
Brother Merrill has taught me more in one semester than any other teacher has. He comes to class prepared with an engaging discussion and builds off of student comments. The literature we read was timeless. He accommodated our class numerous times and helps each student grow and identify their academic and personal potential.
This man is hilarious. There are so many awkward parts when dealing with Chaucer Literature. Brother Merrill handles these so well. You learn so much from every single class. You will not know your grade until the day that grades come out, but if you are showing up to class, doing well on the quizzes, and keeping up with the papers you will pass!
Brother Merrill is amazing and this class was so interesting. His quizzes are sometimes hard but if you do the reading and take notes in class, you will do well. He also gives a lot of opportunities for extra credit. He really cares about his students and encourages them and lets them know what they can do better.
Medieval Literature is his happy place. I thought this class was going to be boring and hard to follow, but he makes it so interesting. You can tell this is his passion. The reading is important for the quizzes, and his papers are harmless. If you are confused, you can go to his office and he will talk you through certain elements of the class.
Honestly, best teacher I have had in my 9 semesters at BYUI. He is truly knowledgeable and passionate about his subject. He truly cares for his students. I would say that his courses are only difficult if you don't show up for class or don't do the reading. But he makes you want to show up because he is funny and his lectures are interactive.
Brother Merrill knows his stuff! He holds really engaging lectures. A lot of your learning will be independent of class. Be prepared for deep reading and lots of quizzes. Bro. Merrill will go off on tangents but I always learned something from his class. If you're not a confident reader/writer, USE OFFICE HOURS. Would take a class from him again!
Very enjoyable lectures. He is hilarious, brilliant, and bonds really well with his students. Quizzes are tough, but there was definitely a recurring theme in the questions... so figure it out early in the semester and look for things he might ask in the reading!
Don't let his European fashion sense intimidate you; he has all the speech eccentricities of any regular father who hates his family's dog. Knowledge, passionate, and forgiving. Papers take a while to get back; "Oh your last papers. Im sure you would like those back before you die haha. And his Falsetto for the Cuckoo Song is envious ladies.
Brother Merrill is my favorite teacher. He isn't as organized as other teachers, but he is fair in that he realizes that if he can make mistakes, you can too. He is an absolute expert in his field; I learned more from him than I have from most teachers. If you can take from him, do.
Very disorganized! Bro. Merrill has got to be writing his own reviews. He thinks he's hot but grandpa is not! Very disappointed and bored in his class. Professor has a huge ego!
Extremely slow to grade assignments and give feedback! I agree he has to be writing his own reviews!
Brother Merrill is one of my favorite people on this earth. I have taken several classes from him and am never disappointed. I always learn so much! He is an expert in his field, and genuinely cares about the welfare of his students. He is always willing to help with anything, and loves his work.
Bro. Merrill is seriously the best!! He's smart and funny, and he always makes class fun to attend. Plus, your vocab will expand just by listening to his lectures! He gives lots of good feedback on papers and helps challenge students. I've taken several classes from him, and I'm never disappointed :)
History of the English Language is a fun class, but there is a lot of new vocabulary and terms to know and remember. The quizzes are crazy, but there are bonus questions that soften the blow. It was a fun class, so I'm not sure what these awful ratings are all about. They just didn't like the teacher, which makes no sense because he's decent.
Ummmm, No!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brother Merrill is my favorite professor ever; he truly has changed my life and the way I approach writing. He is funny, intelligent, and genuine. The wait to get papers back is worth it because he is honest and helpful. If you are in school to learn and become a better writer, TAKE HIM. If your not, I would suggest looking into changing degrees.
I didn't really like this class. Brother Merrill is a great person, but I don't always understand why he teaches some things. He refuses to use ilearn and his quizes can be very hard. I don't normally dislike professors, but he is the second one. He taught us a bunch of latin words and didn't let us know we needed to know them for the quiz so...
He is a very nice professor but classes are kind of unorganized. He focuses more on help students thinking critically rather than how to write papers, but you do need to write papers in this class. Hope you know how to write them before you take this class.
Brother Merrill expects college level work from his students but the overall homework load for this class was appropriate. His class is structured so that your writing can build on itself which was very helpful when it came to the final paper.
Fun class! We do have a lot of readng for quizzes. Also write responses on what you've read. a few major papers, but he is there to help you either in class or during office hours.
Brother Merrill is hilarious, and I love him! He is just a kind of quirky character! I really like him, but he does not tell you your grade and does not return papers until last minute. All papers are on same topic as final 12-15 page paper which is great, but without feedback on previous papers, every paper is extremely difficult. Hard quizzes too
Brother Merrill is a tough teacher, but he makes the class fun and interesting. Fair warning, he does not use I-Learn and refuses to use any online format unless it "has a good system" that he agrees with. This makes it difficult to receive access to grades on a regular basis. He can be a slow grader, but the feedback that he provides is worth it.
Brother Merrill is an excellent teacher and does a good job of making what could be a hard to understand and potentially boring lecture fun and engaging. I enjoyed this class and would take anofher class from him in a heartbeat. I reccommend him to anyone.
A lot of the class time Brother Merrill would just converse with the class. The discussions were interesting and if you dont pay attention its not the end of the world. There are quizzes, but they are easy and he always offers bonuses. Three big papers, and the final paper is assigned the first week.
Brother Merrill is an excellent professor. He is dedicated to making students think critically and develop fine skills. His lectures are interesting! Brother Merrill is also very easy to work with; he is understanding and willing to help in any way necessary. Brother Merrill's class is tough, but isn't college supposed to be hard? He is great!
Always willing to help and take the time to go over things with you if you come talk to him after class or go to his office. Very funny and engaging during lectures.
Always willing to help and take the time to go over things with you if you come talk to him after class or go to his office. Very funny and engaging during lectures. He does not like Ilearn but now that the school is changing to canvas he might use it.
He was a wonderful professor. His lectures were extremely entertaining and there was never a dull moment in class. I would definitely recommend him to anyone who needs to take an English credit. He doesn't use ilearn which was kinda difficult but otherwise the class was wonderful.
Brother Merrill is very funny, but he does expect hard work. Make sure to do the readings or your won't pass the quizzes. As long as you do this well, everything else should be easy.
Darin Merrill is an amazing professor. He is passionate and really knows his material. I would recommend him to anyone.
He knows his stuff. I am still not entirely sure what he is looking for on his papers, but the quizzes are manageable if you read all the material, including your notes.
His class was the most entertaining that I've had this semester. He is easy to work with and fair with his grading.
Brother Merrill is a down to earth kind of guy. Really fun lectures, he makes it interesting and enjoyable environment to learn in. Make sure to keep on top of the reading so you do well on the quizzes. He cares about his students and is easy to talk to. Ask about his dog that he loves dearly. ;)
He was a really funny teacher, but he got off topic a lot-which made things humorous. There is a quiz in class most days, but it's pretty easy. He takes a long time to get your work back to you though. Overall pretty good.
Brother Merrill was a fantastic teacher. I was not excited to take 301 at all. Brother Merrill made the class extremely fun and practical. The readings are good and interesting and usually not too long. His lectures are fun to go to and interesting. His massive vocabulary makes things not dull. I would take other classes from him if I could.
He was hilarious. Im pretty sure he would try to say outrageous things just to get reactions out of us sometimes if class was dry that day. You could tell he knew his stuff and he wanted us to do well.
I always enjoyed coming to class because you knew you would enjoy whatever he said. He's very candid, but I respect his ability to say it like it is. He really cares about helping his students succeed and is willing to change things if necessary. The assignments weren't for busy work, they had application and purpose. Take his class :)
Brother Merrill is such a great teacher. He really has a passion and strong understanding of literature. His quizzes can be difficult but if you truly study the readings you will be fine. There is a lot of work but he wants you to succeed. His lectures are filled with interesting things and he is so real and funny.
Bro. Merrill is a funny guy. If you're someone who needs a professor who stays exactly with the calendar so that you know what to expect every day, Bro. Merrill is not for you. He goes on a lot of tangents during class, but if you like those random historical nuggets, he's your man. His quizzes are tough, but if you REALLY read you'll be fine.
I really enjoyed going to class; he is very funny and entertaining. I would recommend doing the readings and going to class if you want to do well. He is somewhat tough on grading essays.
Brother Merrill is an awesome teacher, he engages with the students and knows how to keep class entertaining. There are a lot of papers but they are all working up towards the final at the end of the semester, so it's very helpful. There are quizzes and lots of readings that you need to get done, but they are super easy and fun! Highly reccommend!
He's a really great guy with pretty interesting lectures. He gets off on tangents a lot so we hear lots of stories about different random things which I enjoy. We were required to do a lot of pretty difficult reading and take lots of quizzes that were pretty hard at times. He also doesn't use I-Learn which makes it hard to know what your grade is.
Brother Merrill is the best because he is reasonable and willing to work with you. He is hilarious, so you never fall asleep. You will learn a lot and enjoy all of it! The format of his class is simple. His quizzes are kind of hard, but if your actually a good student and do the reading, then its easy. But he gives you lots of hints, so dont worry.
You will love this class and Brother Merrill! The class is not only easy, but super fun! You will learn a lot, and feel smarter too haha. Brother Merrill has jokes for days, which is nice cause then you wont dread coming to class. He's reasonable and fair. The format of the class is simple and the same for all of his classes. Take him if you can.
Really nice will work with you especially if you have medical issues. That was a big help. The papers are cool because you can keep the same topic so that for the final you already got the information for it. Which makes that easier. I recommend taking his class
This class is really tough if you don't know a lot about British history. Sometimes Brother Merrill assumes that the class understands things that only some students do. That being said, he is always more than happy to help you out if you ask, and his lectures are very interesting. You will not pass the quizzes if you don't pay attention in class.
Brother Merrill is a great professor, he definitely made the course fun. His lectures were always enjoyable. He doesn't use I-learn, so you won't always know your grade, which can be frustrating. This class is tough, as any other English course is, be ready to read!
Brother Merrill is very easy going but passionate about what he does. He gets easily distracted and goes of course and rants during discussions sometimes, which can either be amusing or annoying. Just pay attention to his syllabus, ask questions about the assignments and get started early and you will be fine.
Brother Merrill connects really well with the students. He makes classes fun. He helped me remember to enjoy learning.
Brother Merrill is a great guy. I am an international students who hates writing essays even in my own language. However, brother Merrill cares about you and teach you enough to make things easier. He is really funny and you never get bored at class. I would take his class without any problem.
Brother Merrill is a great teacher. He is one of the few left that can teach to teach, and does not rely on I-learn or anything else to accomplish goals. I felt that the readings we do for the class were extremely insightful and offered new ways of thinking. He likes to use big words, but he cares about student understanding.
Brother Merrill is a really cool teacher who has a thing for cows and uses them for most of his examples haha but overall he is really nice and willing to work with you. Prepare for in class quizzes and several papers. If you like a more structured course he might not be the best teacher for you. DONT PROCRASTINATE OR YOU WILL SUFFER!!
Brother Merrill is a really good teacher. He is passionate about what he teaches and knows his stuff. He makes learning fun and different. I thoroughly enjoyed his class.
Professor Merrill is a great teacher. He is very knowledgeable and he desires to help his students to not only pass the class but to succeed and truly learn. He is a very funny person and he helps us to apply the things that we are learning to our lives. However, he is not always clear with his instructions or the general structure of the class.
Brother Merrill is such a great teacher. I've taken multiple classes from him, and the amount of knowledge in his brain never ceases to amaze me. Sometimes things will go over your head, but don't be afraid to ask questions because he is more than happy to answer them! He works with you and is very encouraging. Be sure to keep up with the calendar!
Brother Merrill is great! However, he often goes on long tangents that distract from the lesson and make us a day behind. He posted a schedule, but he forgot due dates. He even came late to our scheduled final. There were lots of reading and quizzes, but he didn't tell us what to focus on. Thankfully, he has a grace period when turning in work.
Boring! Disorganized!
So I enjoyed Bro Merrill in class he is savage and intriguing in lecture. BUT I felt like he did not do a good job of making me a better writer. I also spent lots of time writing, revising and going to the writing center and my papers' grades didn't reflect that. He spent a lot of time on reading and analyzing, yet graded us on writing ability...
I love Brother Merrill! I have taken 2 classes from him and he has been so awesome! He really knows his stuff. He made Medieval and Renaissance literature so much fun and really interesting. He will quiz you, but if you read and study the material then they are no problem. He really cares about his students. He's just the best!
Brother Merrill is amazing. He really knows his stuff when it comes to English and Medieval Literature. There are three 3-5 page papers, four 1 page papers, and 10-11 quizzes. He is very understanding with your life and things going on. He understands that we have a life outside of class. Don't hesitate to ask him for help or assistance!
Brother Merrill is a good teacher. He really helps his students to understand the material and still makes class really fun. However, he does expect his students to do the work. He pushes his students to be better. I would take a class from him again.
Brother Merrill is a great teacher. He really helps his students understand the material, but is definitely not boring. Pay attention and laugh a lot and you'll do great!
Bro Merrill is great! I normally do not enjoy lecture driven classes but he makes them engaging and you learn a lot. He does tend to go on tangents however you are not punished for them. He gives great feedback on papers that is direct and honest and if you pay attention, your writing will progress. If you show up to class, you will do great!
Bro. Merrill is passionate about this class ergo tangents. If this is not something you can handle, don't take him. Your grade is defined by daily reading assignments, 10 quizzes throughout semester, four response papers 1 pg. single spaced, 2 recitations, one group project, three major papers 3-5 pgs. each double spaced, final.
Brother Merrill has a very lecture heavy class and often goes on tangents that can negatively affect what he is able to teach you. However, he takes responsibility for this and will change the class schedule accordingly to adjust to his distractions. He is understanding of student situations and cares about the well being of his students.
Brother Merrill is an awesome teacher. He is respectful to students and knowledgeable about Medieval Literature. His humor makes his lectures and the reading interesting. He does go off tangent during class, but when he does it is done to emphasize themes or information in the reading. He is willing to answer questions outside of class.
Brother Merrill is funny and very enthusiastic. His poetry recitation skills are also top-notch (be prepared for him to shout Beowulf at you). He uses a calendar for readings and assignments, which is super helpful, but be aware that sometimes he gets distracted in class and gets behind on discussing the material.
Brother Merrill is brilliant, and passionate about English lit, but I often found that he bounced around too much and he used language that was difficult to understand a lot of the time. He has quizzes, but puts them on at weird random times after class and only leaves them open until 5, so they are super easy to miss. They're trickily worded too.
Brother Merrill is definitely a passionate teacher! He is very knowledgeable about British Literature, he takes material that can be tedious and brings it to life! Often tangents in class but he makes sure to emphasize what he really wants you to know. Do not miss class - it's a fair bit of reading but also you'll miss out interesting connections
Brother Merrill is one of the best professors I have had here at this school. He knows his stuff and loves what he does and it shows. I was very nervous at the beginning of the semester to take this class, but having him as a professor made it fun and bearable. 10/10 would recommend taking any class from him.
Professor Merrill is well educated and a skilled writer. He is easily accessible outside of class, and in general, you will know what he expects from your papers. Lectures were very interesting, though not often related much to the course material. Attendance is not mandatory, but you won't pass the quizzes if you don't go to class.
Brother Merrill loves humor and his classes are easy to sit through. He's not a harsh grader. Attendance is not mandatory but your grade is boosted with the in-class assignments. He often forgets about his own deadlines and expects you to write papers very quickly.
Brother Merrill is a really good professor and is really knowledgeable about what he teaches, but sometimes I think he forgets that we are not as knowledgeable as he is. Make sure you actually do the readings because you will be lost otherwise.
Merrill was very enthusiastic and knew a lot about the text.
Three main papers that you have to write. Our final paper was 12-15 pages long. He's not my favorite teacher but he's not the worst teacher I've had.
This is the second class I've taken from Brother Merrill. There are 2 major papers, 4 minor papers, 2 recitations, 10 quizzes, a group project, and a final. He lets you lengthen your minor papers to make your major paper and you can reuse your recitations if you've already taken a class from him. Attendance isn't mandatory, but you should still go.
Attendance optional, but definitely go. Goes on lots of tangents. Great at coming up with funny, random metaphors on the spot. Teaches with a focus on logic/reasoning. Emphasizes format quite a bit. A few small papers and one big one, plus some quizzes. Normal workload for a 300 lvl course. Grades hardish on the papers, easy A's on everything else
Brother Merrill was an awesome teacher! He was super funny and he always made class interesting in some way. He is very flexible when it comes to late work, and will let you fix a lot of the major papers after they've been graded. He also offers extra credit opportunities which is nice. Overall I really enjoyed having this class.
This guy is awesome! He expects you to know your stuff and come to class prepared. He lectures quite a bit but expects participation. A few papers for the class but he is always willing to meet help. Gives good feedback on papers and cares about your progress in the class and as a student.
Amazing teacher, incredibly intelligent and brilliant. But because of that, he sometimes doesn't realize how hard his class or assignments are. He is always available to help you out though! Don't fall behind on any assignemnt, it will bring your grade down real fast.
Brother Merrill is one of the funniest and most caring teachers you will have on this campus. The first day he seems like a hard teacher but after he weened out the students that don't want to be there he is hilarious! If you leave without laughing it is your own fault. You'll have papers to write but he is willing to help in any way.
He combines pop culture references and dad jokes with meaningful insight which makes for some of the most entertaining lectures around. His class is definitely in the top five classes I've had at BYUI.
There's a lot to remember with this class, but it will be alright if you attend lectures and keep up with the reading. The professor is awesome and his class is pretty entertaining.
Great professor! Really knows his stuff and will learn a lot from him. Really easily sidetracked though, so much so that he usually sidetracks himself. But get ready to read and don't forget any assignments - there aren't many assignments so missing one is really harsh on your grade.
Brother Merrill definitely challenged me, but I grew a ton! He really likes to talk and makes the greatest jokes. However, he doesnt have a good grasp on using canvas along with class assignments.
This is a difficult subject matter, but he makes it fun and interesting. The assignments are a bit difficult but not impossible. There are quizzes on each chapter and they are closed book. There are two major papers and a project.
This is a cool dude! He can be rambly at times but he's super funny. He is brutal with some of the assignments! There is usually one big group project but you get to judge your group members. History of the English Language is SUPER hard but I also took his British Lit and it was much easier. One of the best teachers personality wise.
Lots of people say Brother Merrill is a tough grader, but if you pay attention to the reading and lectures, you'll be fine. Take notes! Write down everything (I mean everything), you won't regret it. Not only will tests and papers be easier, but you'll also get some great quotes. If you don't like to laugh, don't take his class.
There's lots of reading that needs to get done, but if you love to read, it passes by quickly. Everyday Dr. Merrill will lecture and expect you to take notes and remember it up until the final exam. Brother Merrill expects everyone to attend except under extenuating circumstances, but if we don't regularly come, he will take attendance.
He's a good teacher who knows a lot about the subject matter. As long as you do all of the assignments your grade should be fine. He's a really nice, funny teacher. I recommend him.
Brother Merrill is a super awesome teacher. He will make you work for your grade, and you will get frustrated with his quizzes, but at the end of the day I learned so much. His lectures are awesome, and he adds spice with his unsuspected hilarity. As long as youre prepared to work hard from the get go, then youll have a great time. :)
I find it rare for a professor to show such genuine passion for his subject matter and the wellbeing of his students. Darin Merrill makes the course engaging, entertaining, and instructive. Even though the course is pretty demanding, I have rarely, if ever, learned so much while still genuinely enjoying myself. I found myself looking forward toclas
Merrill was a wonderful professor, and willing to help you out as long as youre willing to work. You do not just learn about writing but about humanity, how to interact with other people, and how to get your ideas across in general in a better way. Not only that but Brother Merrill is hilarious and enthusiastic about the subject he teaches.
There were times I wanted a response on some emails but never got any.
Brother Merrill is an amazing professor. I took his great books of the world class. He is very knowledgable on the subject and his lectures are very insightful and entertaining. He is one of the best English teachers I have ever had. Since taking his class I have a better understanding of analyzing characters and themes of books.
Brother Merrill is awesome! He has been my favorite teacher this semester. There were quite a few papers due for this class, but it is a writing and research class, so that was to be expected. He is hilarious and can get sidetracked easily, but always tells you everything you need to know. He is very reasonable, and gets that stuff happens.
Brother Merrill is awesome! There's no other way to put it. He manages to take some pretty boring material and turn it into something we enjoy learning. His dry sense of humor is always entertaining, and he's always looking for the best way to get the information across. Everything he talks about in class is vital for exams, so pay attention!
Brother Merrill in one of my favorite professors that I've taken. He is smart and is very passionate about what he teaches, he gives awesome lectures, though he does deviate frequently to tell funny stories or talk about other interesting things (which I really enjoy) but not so frequently that it's super annoying. This is my 3rd class from him.
I've taken several classes with Brother Merrill and I've loved them but be sure to really watch for deadlines. He also takes FOREVER to grade assignments. Be sure to pay attention in class and you'll be fire!
75% of the class is Brother Merrill going off on tangents that mean absolutely nothing to what you are there to learn. An occasional deviation would be ok, but most of every class is so pointless. You talk little about the readings in class that you will be quizzed on. Then you are expected to know very specific, minute details on the quizzes.
Bro. Merrill is fantastic. His lectures were hilarious, and the tangents he went on were entertaining. That did get a little stressful, at times, because it felt like we could be using that time more wisely. There's a lot of memorization in this class and it can get stressful, so I thought the light-hearted lectures were great!
Professor Merrill is so so awesome, and I am sad to leave his class. There is so much reading, and it is all mandatory, but he covers what you really need to know in his lectures... which he eventually gets to. His grading takes ages, and they're heavily weighted, but he's lax and willing to work with you. He is hilarious, I will miss him haha.
This class made me cry a LOT. The lectures by themselves were great, but they barely helped with the homework. There were so many tangents! We talked about the big picture things in class and then the quizzes would be about the most obscure details! Bro. Merrill seems like a great guy, but I would avoid his classes if you care about your grades.
Class was okay. Bro Merrill went on many long tangents that made class feel like a waste. Often times left that class very offended at some things that were said and it made it hard to attend because of it.
Brother Merrill is a good person, but I struggled with his teaching style. It's entirely lecture-based and he can often go on seemingly irrelevant tangents as well as frequently cancel class. But he also tries to help students when they're having issues. I got a few important things out of his class, but I struggled to enjoy the class itself.
Bro. Merrill was an enjoyable teacher. You read a lot in his class and you take at least 1 quiz every week. Close reading helps to pass the quizzes, but make sure you remember key phrases and words for the midterm and final. There are 5 little responses and 2 major papers. He's a loving teacher, he is a little old school. Really nice guy.
He's clearly passionate and knowledgeable about the content. He does go on tangents fairly often, but he always gets back on track and covers all the content (and the tangents are fascinating!). He cares about his students and is willing to help if you reach out to him. He's also hilarious and teaches things clearly, and is happy to re-explain.
I really loved being in Bro. Merrill's class. He is so funny, makes the texts applicable, and makes the class enjoyable. However, his communication skills were lacking and I felt like I never knew what was going on in the class, even with great attendance, I felt lost.
Brother Merrill goes on lots of tangents that don't necessarily relate to what we are learning about. However, when he actually teaches, it is very meaningful information. Early in the semester, I felt like going to class was a waste of time, but later on it got better. Going to class is important cause he makes important announcements in class.
One of the best professors I have had.
Merrill's class (Summer 2019) changed my career. The literary analysis skills I gained there have benefited me daily as a scientist. Brother Merrill wants his students learn to approach texts critically and improve their ability to understand (1) why an author wrote what they did and (2) why they chose to write it the way they did.
Dr. Merrill is a fantastic professor. He is a fair and kind grader that gives students many opportunities to learn and better themselves as people and students. His lectures are hilarious. He is a genuinely enjoyable professor and human being. If you can take a class from Dr. Merrill, I'd recommend a seat in the front and a willingness to learn!!!!
While Brother Merrill's lectures can sometimes veer off-track, his insightful approach to literary analysis is invaluable. The class is demanding but rewarding - stay engaged, use study tools like unstuckstudy ai, and you'll gain critical thinking skills that last.
Brother Merrill cares little for his students and more for his own tangents that have little to do with the graded content. If you're looking for a pretentious professor who likes the sound of his own voice rather than teaching you anything valuable, take a class from him.
This is for Candace and Sarah. Brother Merrill is a fair and equitable teacher with a strong sense of right and wrong. He teaches critical thinking and good reasoning. The lectures can go off on tangents, but ultimately, the lesson is taught the way it should. He has some memory issues, but he is old and borderline ketonic, so it's okay.
Brother Merrill does an outstanding job at lecturing and communicating with the class. Whenever someone has a comment he is great about bouncing off what they said and creating a good conversation around it. Of course it's a writing class so there are a lot of papers but he provides the needed tools and information to prepare for them.
If you are not an English MAJOR, probably do not take him. He is the only teacher, but other things fill the requirement. His lectures are long and rarely on topic. He really likes what he has studied but it was hard to know what notes to take. He is helpful when you mess up/need some grace. The assignments are easy, but not on canvas till right b4
Canvas was really sloppy and wouldn't post assignments until right before the due date. Random etymology paper that was worth as much as the midterm for some reason; although nothing was taught on that subject, and it is not a pre-req. Quizzes were super ambiguous, so it was easy not to understand what he wanted you to answer.Funny guyenjoyed humor
Brother Merrill is a nice teacher, but horrible at communicating. He never gave a heads up about most of the assignments until the day they were due and didn't create them until last minute. His quizzes are super hard, it always felt like the questions were on things we didn't really go over in class. He is lecture heavy, so be prepared for that.
Brother Merrill lectures for about 20% of class, and the other 80% is random tangents and stories that don't relate and are often him making fun of other people/the church. There are 4 papers that are either 3-5 pages, or 14+ pages (only 1 this long). There are readings for every class, and a quiz about once a week. Start the papers early!
This was my least favorite class and professor that I have ever taken. His assignments are always posted late, you never know what you have to know because he rants, he's such an unclear communicator, and his class goes overtime every day. Beware because he always says his opinions which is almost always making fun of someone or something.
It all just seemed so irrelevant to life. I wish that we maybe had more class discussion. Said phrase: "Sorry if this triggers anyone" and then proceeds to share about intimate subjects. OR "don't report me on this" and then proceeds to defend his position the spirit is driven away, and therefore learning decreases 10 fold.
Brother Merril is really fun. He loves grammar and really knows what he is talking about. Almost all classes are just a lecture, which he will ask questions about on quizzes, so attendance is important. He does teach this course with diagramming so if that is not your thing you should take it from someone else.
Brother Merrill just wasn't a good teacher. He thinks very highly of himself and barely gives you any grace for when life happens to you. Wouldn't ever take him again.
Very funny and interesting, but hard to take notes—he throws out random info and has mediocre explanations. He's knowledgeable but lacks an effective way to teach beyond constant, unfocused talking. I love the course content, but he's not great at teaching in a way I understand.
