good prof, likes and respects students...

nice guy, loves to teach, very organized
****!

very organized lectures, rather picky on assignments
pretty fair, you do well if you pay attention!!
Most@NW don't like him but i found him to B quite good: ) Pay attention=A
only had him half a semester but had very great presentation
Very dedicated to his job, excellent teachning skills, very fair not biased, take his course, he will make it intersting, I promise!
right?
His only flaw is that he needs to understand that people talk to eachother during lectures to help them understand better
He doesn't tolerate talking in class.. and dont mention crim!!!
He needs to understand we are not elementary kids.
Very clear and dedicated. His notes are pre-set and done in powerpoint so they are easy to follow and to the point. He also follows the text very well. If you come to class and take notes, even with limited studying, you can get a good mark.
he's great if you have little polit. knowledge, but if you do know a lot, youre too advanced to bear the 2 or 3 hours. DO NOT TAKE, then. I was going insane with that and the constant "right?", "right?" "right?".

Nice dude! clear as a bell! but so very dry. He does not make it interesting, if you are interested in the material-then, and only then will it be interesting. about the notes, can't write ALL OF THEM,they go on forev, and listen to you at the same time!
Great Prof. Easy to follow notes, fair marking, and 20% of the mark based on attendance and 5 easy quizzes based on the reading.Learned alot in this class.
He really knows his stuff, and his notes are very clean and easy to understand. If you want to gain a good understanding of politics, he is the teacher to have.
Marks fairly and honestly. Insightful feedback on essays. Well prepared and quite clear. He is not my fav. but i must hand it to him, he is a very smart guy who conveys his knowledge well. puts alot of effort into his classes. Polar OPPOSITE of Marlene.
ideology and politics is a tough course to teach, too many ideologies, and one cannot amass enough knowledge on every ideology to lecture on them.He was smart to Liberalism, Conservatism, and socialism, but his knowledge on all others was waning.
Very good teacher, easy marker, very helpful, great notes, knows his stuff, kinda boring, but just show up, take notes, and with limited studying you'll do well!
Love this professor! He turned me on to politics. Great notes, really knows his stuff, and he is open to discuss even the most radical women's issues.
Great notes. Integrates discussion into them very well, too. Kind of mundane, but very good if you're interested in the material.
Talks for the whole class (too much); no class discussion; pretty dry and boring. Loved poli before taking this class. Expects us to begin paper research before he even covers ANY material. Nice guy but class would be better if he had class discussions.
A mix between Woody Allen and Peter Mansbridge. Darin is a very courteous, caring and knowledgable teacher, who obviously has a passion for what he teaches. There is no reason to do poorly in his class, and the simulation he does is very interesting, and is a good alternative toconstant lecture.
SUPER DUPER HARD marker, he justifies the mark u get clearly, but marks fairly. Very passionate in what he teaches, got me interested in political theory and philosophy. VERY well organised. Highly recommended if you really want to learn about politics.
Come to class, and try, thats all he wants, review your material, and work on your paper, and you will do fine
Very good teacher. clear and concise lectures and very structured classes. an easy and fair grader, always there to help out anyone with understanding of the course material
very good prof. easy to listen to and passes his love of teaching as well as politics on to his students. more teachers like this needed. Worth the dollar to take any of his courses.
If you like waiting two months for your tests and papers to be graded, Darin is the the Prof for you. Does have a good understanding of the course material but papers were graded very harshly for a second year course.
He's a good instructor, very passionate about politics. He wants you to know all you can and gives lots of opportunities for comments and class discussions. He is a hard marker, but what you get is really what you deserve, he is fair about it.Well organized and I'd like to take another class of his.
He marks very VERY VERY hard! nice guy in general, but he is a tough marker when it comes to papers.
He is not very interested in what you have to say if its not something he agrees with and his lectures are sooooooooo boring! He uses powerpoint and you can't go off topic from what is on the screen otherwise he'll tell you to wait for the next slide! Never take this class, never!!!
I like him....
Wanker extraordinairre... Hard marker, which is inexcusable considering his uninspired lectures, his robotic reliance on the friggin' Powerpoint, and his refusal to answer any question that doesn't directly link back to the PP.
The power points are a bit useless but i liked how he interacted with the class. Listen to the lectures and you will have no problem with marks.
he's a spoiled narcasistic brat, unsympathic and scolds students like grade 1's and acts as if we're wasting his time in the classes WE PAY for...I'd recommend him for brown nosers and others like himself who think they're god's gift to whatever
Great prof. Darin is a tough, but fair marker, any grade you receive is the grade you deserve. He lets you know what short answer questions will be on exams, but you have to guess for essay questions. Lectures were interesting, but sometimes he got sidetracked. Anyone who complains about him is not working hard enough. Work hard and be rewarded.
If you dont understand Political Science he is NOT the guy to take it with. He is very dry and doesn't explain anything well enough to understand. I swear half the class is either asleep or trying to keep occupied. Take another prof if at all possible!
I like how he sparked a lot of discussions in class. His essays on his tests were a little random, but the short answer is easy once you get the format down. He relys on power-point A LOT, but usually if you pay attention to his lectures you will do well on tests. Overall I think he's one of the better profs I've had.
very good teacher, if you pay attention in class you will never have to pick up the text book. really nice guy
Yes, you do need some prior knowledge on the subject. The class is mandatory but some people don't show anyway. His power-points are only helpful because he photocopies notes. Barely keep awake though the class. He marks people hard, I'm ok because I'm good at English. 3 papers, 2 tests, a few quizzes. Just do the second paper and exams really well
great guy.. tests are all written.. u get grades for attendance. term paper is fair.
I have taken 4 Poli Sci courses and Darin is my fave! He is funny and knows his stuff! He makes it easy for students to get involved in discussion as he is the total opposite of intimidating. If you like to get involved in discussion and don't mind 100% written exams, then take this prof.
He showed great enthusiasm. He is a hard marker but fair. He is straight up with what he expects and I really enjoyed the class.
Personally, I do not know what some people are complaining about. He is a great prof, helpful, and encourages questions not related to the power point. He is genuinely interested in what you say (even if what you say makes no sense) and he will go out of his way to give you all the resources you need to succeed. I would recommend this prof.
terrible teacher would not recommend him. Too hard for an intro class. exams are all written
Darins a good prof overall. His lectures are very worth while, his attitude is fair and always listens to students input. The tests are a bit tricky because he is a bit of a stickler for grammar. Overall though, the tests are fair and only those who don't study or skip should recieve a poor grade. The term paper is a bit tough though.
Dr. Nesbitt is an amazing prof. After taking his class I am very interested in majoring in Political science. His exams are quite fair, gives you a list of terms to memorize for the short answer and you need to study notes hard for the essay questions. Overall, great teacher.
TURN AROUND AND RUN THE OTHER WAY. I had him for 1100 piece of cake, but do not take political theory with him, it's close to 140 pages of reading a week, his marking standards are extremely high, all exams are take home, the paper topics are extremely difficult and challenging.
Darin is well-equipped to teach Political Science. He is well informed on the topic, and is passionate about it. He exhibits an interest in learning and education. He will also do his best to help you understand anything you are not clear on.
He rocks. Best Teacher Ever. He's monotone but he's passionate. He made the course awesome however, with his own insights, however, he is by no means arrogant, he always lets the students talk first before he interjects and encourages a safe learning environment.
He is awesome he even made neo-liberalism fun and I love his views on the youth vote. I love the participation rate in our class.
DArin Nesbitt is an AMazing teacher! He talks a lot but he is very passionate!! He made me love political science...i am one of those ppl who hates listening but he made it a blast..his tests are good and u are able to acheive good marks becasue he prepares u great for them!! I reccomend him to everyone he is also quite funny! ENJOY HIS TEACHING!!
Has ridiculous marking standards which could cause one to lose marks even if they displayed an understanding of the subject at hand. Does this under the guise of 'preparing' you for later professors, but it is really that he can't stand not to have things his way, and he is too close-minded to allow any deviation from the way he likes things.
an amazing teacher. very clear lectures and very funny person. very friendly and helpful and really caring. i loved his class he makes politics fun and some times humorous. one of the best profs i have met so far.
Awesome prof. He is very clear and his notes aren't messy. Can be tough on grades though. But a great prof anyways
Nice prof! Read the books and you'll get an A~
one of the worst teachers i have ever had. he doesn't make sense. very boring
Darin is extremely boring! He talks so much that over 25% of the course is omitted from the final exam. He manages to take a simple topic and turn it into a 2-hour lecture. He knows his stuff but he doesn't know how to teach a class of young, uninterested students. Recommended if you need to catch up on some sleep and want 3 credits for it.
Extremely brutally hard marker. His exams do no require a whole lot of thinking, just a whole lot of memorizing out of the text book. For example, on the mid term you are given 5 words that are to be defined in 3 sentences each, not a sentence less, not a sentence more. So memorize, memorize, memorize and show up to his class
Darin is a great teacher and very passionate about his subject. Obviously if you're not interested in political science you will find the class boring. He is not a brutal marker at all, I got a B+ on the midterm and only studied the night before. The term paper is harsh though-10 pages. But I did really enjoy Mr. Nesbitts class.
Darin is not a particularly bad teacher; boring and over-reliant on PowerPoint, sure, but not brutal or anything. I won't get into great detail, but let's just say my final paper lost 20% due to lateness that he knew about beforehand (he said it was ok, full marks would be given, etc.), but he refused to acknowledge he said so on the due date.
Nesbitt is a raging neo-con in disguise. Im a pHd student now and looking back I now realize how conservative his politics are - he once told us that if nafta was abolished, Canada would be a third world country overnight. Um, ya, okay? As if the US buys products to do us a favour...His understanding of critical theory is brutal.says "um" too often
By far the worst instructor that I ever had at Douglas. He like to call himself "Doctor" LOL. Do not ever ask him a question because he loves to talk about nonsense and unrelated stuff and before u know it 20 mins have passed and he still has not answered ur question.
By far the worst instructor that I ever had at Douglas. He like to call himself "Doctor" LOL. Do not ever ask him a question because he loves to talk about nonsense and unrelated stuff and before u know it 20 mins have passed and he still has not answered ur question.
pretty good teacher, but his lectures were extremly boring and he stutters alot which i mean ALOT.. he says "you know" alot as well. For example, during lectures he will be like "you know, the liberal party you know, blah blah you know, you know this, you know" and stutters extremely alot too which makes it difficult to focus on what he is talking.
Positive: interesting, talks about current politics, studied night before for miderm and got 84, learned lots of important things, early submission term paper date lets you get feedback for how to improve your paper Negative: does wierd quizzes worth about 15-20% that are hard to get over 60% on overall: got a B and didnt work too hard,Good prof
Good Prof. Paper is TOO LONG for an introductory course.
If you want to do well, he will help you out. Had him twice, and would have him as my prof again. Safe learning enviro, great prof. Very clear. Likes to talk but is very informative. He's a good guy.
Knows his stuff. Tends to ramble a smidge but is very knowledgeable on subject and clear on expectations for class. Start prep for midterm/final early... doing rough outlines of at least one of each test essay really helped me. Do your reading, don't be a jerk and turn your phone off. You'll do fine.
cant stand this prof, he stutters like crazy and is extremely hard marker, very high expectations for an introductory class, 10 page term paper!!! too long, would not take take another class with him!!
Extremely interesting class brought up quite a few current political issues never found a single class dull!
Decent professor. He knows his stuff and is a fair marker on the midterm. Paper has to be extremely well written to receive a good grade, though. Lectures are pretty dry; high in content but also high in fluff, stuttering, and rambling. Had him twice and he's better as you get into higher level courses.
Passionate, loves to talk and have class discussions, very specific on his high expectations for assignments and exams. Can sometimes get rambled during lectures and when answering questions. Consistent attendance, in class notes and textbook reading is required to do well.
Nesbitt is a fantastic teacher! He's so helpful if you show him you're eager to learn. I got an A on his paper simply because I consulted him quite a bit on it. He's not judgmental, has interesting views and stimulates class discussion. One of the best profs I've had. His exams are fair, just know the material.
Decent prof, however, he tends to ramble and before you know the class is over and you've gained no information. The topics he brought up were interesting but the lectures were rather dry. A tad difficult when it comes to marking in an intro course
extremely boring, dreaded coming to his class because his lectures did not keep me engaged
Darin has okay lectures, not fantastic, but you won't fall asleep. Has high expectations (10pg term paper for intro), however he respects how hard that is to do in your first sem and marks very easily. Gives outlines and clear cut criteria. Overall a great teacher if you work hard.
Darin is very interested in the material he teaches. Lectures were clear and enjoyable. Read the textbook, it is key to success, notes in class are not as vital. Darin is a very fair marker if you put the effort in.
Darin can be a little scary. He comes into the lectures ready and professional. Hr takes his job seriously. He has strict standards but he is clear on what he wants and is willing to help you if u need it. The lectures are interesting and he uses current events to explain topics. Hes tough but clear. Loved him.
Darin takes his lectures and teaching really seriously which isn't really a bad thing but the way he goes about it makes you lose interest and and get rather bored quickly. Though he is very knowledgeable but only really focuses on those who speak out a lot in class. When it comes to marking the papers he is extremely hard for an intro class
He often talks in loops/avoids answering a question this way, for the sake of political correctness. However, he will straight up say you are wrong instead of investigating or explaining why. His feedback is nondescript. I am upset with his lack of support, there was much apathy from the class as a result. Classes aren't efficient nor productive.
I get more information out of the textbook than from his 3 hour lectures, by the end of the class I feel like I've just sat there being talked at instead of learning something. I recommend bringing a binder to his class because he's like the handout king. Not sure why he thinks a 10 page term paper is appropriate for an intro class either.
He is terrible when it comes to marking papers. He is by far the hardest marker ever. He wrote on my evaluation of my paper that "I don't believe you should be under any illusions that this was a good assignment" LIKE WHO IN THE WORLD WOULD SAY THIS?! He's rude & apparently when there r a few spelling mistakes youre an idiot & don't know the topic
Darin was a surprisingly good professor. Fun lectures and clear-cut assignments.
Quiz every class and you have to actually read the chapter every week in order to pass them. Skip one class? B for participation. Skip 2? C . Skip 3 or more classes: FAIL participation, even if you were there for majority of classes. Term paper is 10 pgs, it took me 40 hours to do it and I received an A-. Boring lectures, GPA dropper in my opinion.
Willing to help if you ask for it. Although lectures are not much help, attendance is mandatory. Follow his Midterm and Final review sheet and prepare your answers before time and you'll do well. Let's you know about small quizzes ahead of time. Term paper can be long for an intro class, but start it early and consult Darin for his feedback.
One of the hardest graders I have had at Douglas, assigned a 10 page term paper for an intro class. For a political science class he is way to opinionated, and thinks WAY to highly of himself. If you have a different opinion them him on whats being taught keep it to yourself, as he will give bad marks for disagreeing, also he is passive agressive
Thumbs up!!
Darin is a great guy. Friendly and knowledgeable. He's willing to sit down and chat with you about homework, assignments, tests, issues of the day, etc... He can be a bit unclear as far as marking goes but as long as you follow the criteria you should have no problem.
I've taken 3 of his courses and his passion for Poli Sci is clear in his teaching - 2nd year courses with him are great if you enjoy discussions. Expect 1-3 papers as well as a mid term and a final with 2+ essay responses for all of his courses. Do the readings, engage with the material & you're set!
Save yourself time and dont take his class, he gets pissed if you against his beliefs. He talks for 3 hours its tough not to fall asleep. Hes a hard marker and assigns 10page essay for a beginner class.
Great prof with great lectures. You debate during lectures which is fun. Come to class knowing something about the world. Wont edit your work but is very helpful when you have questions. Participation is key in this class, so come to class, listen and be engaged. Doesn't force his views on you. If you take notes right out of the textbook, easy A.
Tough grader. Not open minded what so ever. As a POLI teacher that's a huge problem. Seems open to discussion and help outside class but gives little to no help. Worst teacher in 2 years of post secondary thus far. Leaves class early yet complains about shorter class time.
The concepts can be tough to wrap your head around but he uses examples and asks us our thoughts. Every class started with a half hour discussion on our opinion on current events. Didn't find him to be a tough marker. Straightforward assignments, nothing comes out left field.
Lectures are intriguing and discussions are relevant. He is pretty friendly and nice to talk to. Grading is fair but he makes you earn it for sure! I think the expectations for this class, as an intro class, were much too high! Midterm (a potential of 12 long essay questions), final (14), citations have to be perfect, 8 page paper, 4 quizzes + more
He is a good teacher, provides enough information AND beyond for what you need for writing papers & exams (e.g. study tips paper, video tutorials, do's/dont do's, writing paper tips, weekly notes for the class!!). I really appreciate him providing all those, made following along easier. Dont miss class, buddy up, ASK questions!!
Darin has been a great Professor this term and i am so happy i had the chance to be taught by him. He is very caring and is always happy to help whoever needs it.
If I could give this professor a zero I would. Extremely rude and condescending. I advise not taking his class.
Had him in the winter semester of 2019. Super fun and makes class interesting. a lot of in class work (usually easy) but a really hard marker when It comes to papers. First short paper you have to do is so unclear and he provides no examples of past written papers to reference to. Midterm and final were the same format and easy to get a B on.
Least favourite prof in 2 years. Weekly readings a ridiculous. His bias is obvious when it comes to feedback, which concerns me regarding his marking. Too much open discussion in class, not enough lecturing. I feel he doesn't know how to lecture or is very lazy about it. I regret taking this class with him.
He's a good guy, friendly and engaging. Always happy to help but will not go out of his way unless absolutely necessary. I enjoyed his class and would definitely take another class with him though if you plan on taking his class make sure you're ready to put the effort in because he does not let sloppiness or lazy work get by him.
Absolutely horrible teacher, the entire lecture will be him talking about his many amazing qualities and achievements and how Douglas is lesser than universities where he studied because it is a college. Mandatory textbook purchase, that he authors and has created multiple versions to prevent resale. I took the 10% attendance grade deduction.
I loved Darin. He gets off topic and is pretty lecture heavy but tells you exactly what you need to know for the midterm and final. I respect him
My guy Nesbitt is a great prof. No midterm or finals just 5 quizzes and 2 paper assignments. A little group projects but I would consider them discussion posts. He's very clear with his grading and also gives great feedback on your assignments. He is a man of kindness.
Nice guy can be a bit disorganized in how he gives his talks--reorganize. Knows his stuff and will meet with you if you ask and is helpful. I have taken 2 classes with him no problem
Darin is mediocre. Not the best, not the worst. Pros is that he only had 5 quizzes (pretty easy), two short assignments (600 words at most) and a few discussion posts. 20% of our mark is participation - which is confusing as we are an asynchronous course so not sure what I'm getting graded on. Cons? Dont ask questions - he just makes u feel stupid
funny prof and gives entertaining lectures
Dr Nesbitt is a solid choice if you're thinking about taking POLI 2201. He offers very detailed feedback and is a fair marker. The course can be reading intensive, however, what political science course isn't. Nevertheless, if you attend lecture, participate, and keep up with the readings the course will be a breeze.
Fair marker and very knowledgeable
The assignments are too confusing and time-consuming (10ish hrs for me). It seems like Dr. Nesbitt's standards are also too high which is frustrating given that I spend hours and have not received anything above a B. Tests are also essays that are hard to do. This course has been incredibly frustrating, overwhelming and demotivating tbh:(
Darin is a great professor. If you take his class I'd recommend listening to his opinion on topics and writing toward his opinion even if it differs from your own. Some really don't like doing this, but if anything its a life lesson that sometimes thats what you have to do and it can even help you think about things in a way you usually wouldn't.
Nice guy, although during his lectures he tends to ramble about unnecessary information, fair grader not too much work although you will need to read a lot to somewhat comprehend his lecture
Darin is a good prof. He helped me in a lot of ways. He's pretty understanding.
Knows his stuff and will meet with you if you ask. I have taken 2 classes with him no problem.
you can tell he has a lot of passion/knowledge about Poli sci. Super nice guy! Lectures can be dry. Exams were either open book or online, and he gives you the questions before the exam which is awesome. He can be a bit of a hard marker so be specifics in your paper. Overall I recommend.
Good prof and an interesting course! I'm glad I tried it out.
I wasn't expecting to like this course as much as I did. I really enjoyed the lectures. I appreciated how thoroughly the expectations of the assignments were explained.
The course has a wide range of political thinkers and their relevance to today's world. I enjoyed the discussion of some of the ways we have changed (and not) over time. It's a good course.
Darin is a great instructor. His course is easy if you show up listen and do the assignments/quizzes. Hes caring and understanding of life, he will[ grant extensions if you need and communicate to him.
Darin is a pretty good instructor. He is nice, knowledgeable, and has a good understanding of political science. There are a couple things that he does not do which I wish he did #1 - He does not provide a course schedule with the outline. #2 - When contacting students, he prefers to use course messages rather than email. But overall, a good prof!
Darin is generally a solid professor. His lectures are engaging, and he's happy to help if you need it. Just be sure to stay on top of the coursework - the quizzes and assignments can add up. unstuck study was a big help for me when studying for exams.
I would not recommend this professor, he can be arrogant and unhelpful, often making you feel uncomfortable to ask questions and avoiding speaking overall. The classroom atmosphere did not feel positive and he grades extremely tough and lacks in teaching the content properly. Avoid if you can.
I wasn't expecting to like the course, but I did. I really enjoyed the lectures and appreciated how thoroughly the expectations of the assignments were explained. Dr. Nesbitt gives good feedback on assignments and is very helpful when you approach him with a problem. I strongly recommend his classes.
Darin is a solid prof. However, he tends to ramble a lot and is quite repetitive. He said my final paper was painful and atrocious because I didn't use separate paragraphs. Decent prof but there's some things he needs to work on.
Darin is a fantastic professor. His lectures are a little long but it's a 3 hour per week course so I imagine he has to fill out the time. He's very strict about following instructions and he is a bit of a harsh grader in my opinion but the feedback he provides is comprehensive and helps you learn what to improve on.
