Way too demanding with work.. take someone else
He sent a weekly email detailing what was to be covered in class and in the almost weekly quizzes but the emails were sometimes very vague & misleading. He grades tests very easily. No text book but extensive articles on blackboard - alot of reading! The first half of the semester was boring but the articles get much more interesting toward the end
This class was great! Although there was a lot of work, it was do-able, especially b/c the prof gave us helpful weekly emails. As for the class, I found it fun, esp. the visuals and the overall easy-going nature of the prof. He made the time in class go by with his humor and ability to make the material relatable to our everyday lives--good stuff!
This guy is a little bit of a nut case and A JOKE... The work load is a lot but it is managable. His lectures are about random things and I usually leave out wondering why I even went to class. There is alot of reading, he grades easily but BE PREPARED TO READ!! (MIGHT I ADD WE WATCHED VERY LITTLE FILM AND THERE WAS ONLY A SLIGHT FOCUS ON WOMAN)
i actually really enjoyed this class! I found the lectures fun. More importantly, the professor was always professional, polite, and responded to emails at a lightening pace. I strongly recommend this class if you want to learn a lot that MSU fails to cover with much of other course stuff. We saw at least seven films, with some cool PP so it Great!
I thought this class was sometimes looong--but i liked how the teacher broke class up by having group discussions, and showing short film clips. it really made me feel like part of the class, like my opinion mattered. the readings were heavy, but the short papers were easily. i liked the most was sharing our views and values in a freindly way
HORRIBLE, AVOID AT ALL COST!!, INEXPERIENCE, RUDE!! IF YOU CARE ABOUT LEARNING+GPA, AVOID HIM! TRUST ME
very dissapointed. i wouldnt take him again. ever
He assigned a 7 page paper with a week to hand in.... Listening to his lectures were like getting your teeth pulled on a good day
this was my fav. class. the work was do-able. the rdgs. were a lot but we were always told what to focus on and what to skip. yeah, we had a final paper the last wk of the semester, but it eliminated taking the actual final exam. also it allowed me to focus on what i liked rather than a prof telling us what we have to cover or cover all-great class
GREAT! TAKE IT ALL COSTS! i guess i am bias but i liked this class becaue of the stuff covered, but alos really liked the way the class was run. unlike other classes, the prof. let us have a voice in class--always encouraging opinions..of course, often students do not like to talk in class, but we managed to have a lot of great discussions!:)
this class was challenging, but as long as you did the readings, and had a pulse in class you should be ok. The prof. is great--i actually made a point to sit in the front b/c he had such penetrating dark eyes--yummy...i guess more Import-I learned a lot in a freindly and fair way. And we as students were permitted to give are opinion-a must take!
Took two classes: Very interesting, and i walked away with a better understanding of history of different gps. He knows his stuff. He is very fair with students- though sometimes maybe too forgiving. He is inspiring, friendly and helpful if you have to ask questions or need to rewrite assignment. one of the better profs here at MSU-a must take!!
He is full of himself def not worth taking find someone better
Its amazing how some people can have such a different exper. in the same class. I found this prof. to be the most humble, helpful, and caring prof. ever He met with me to help me prepare for the midterm, and charted my progress with encouraging words. Plus his lectures were fun + clear as he never took himself too seriously-i doubt there is better!
He's hilarious, absurdly smart, and totally real. He makes class exciting and I always learned something. There were some quizes, but we knew exactly what was coevered. Prof. Echeverria is brilliant and passionate about the material he teaches. He is really invested his students learning. I often left class excited! ! ThanX!:)
WONDERFUL! VERY PLEASED! i never had a more caring prof! Whenever i emailed him with a concern he responded in lighting speed with good suggestions and encouragement. Plus, he was so understanding when i had to miss a few classes! rdgs were alot but learned so much-immigr. patterns, community id, Chicano Mov!, Latino film his.,tons of latin lit!
although atten. was a must, it was a good class--the guy really seems to care about his students--i remeber alot when he would ask us about our thoughts on some class approaches--class disc, gps-unlike so many profs he truly had no ego-i recall stupid students calling him by his first name, rather than embaress them he just made a joke & moved on
I loved this class finally a class where I learned a lot about diffirent cultures and life in general! MSU BEST KEPT SECRET!!!
Avoid!!!! at all costs, he does not know how to teach, nor does he care about his students. i got a decent grade but would never take him again
TAKE!!!! at all costs, he does know how to teach, and does care about his students! i got a decent grade and would take him again! I guess though, most profs should "know how to teach" considering that they were evaulated by high-ranking MSU people. I mean why would MSU have a prof. who "can not teach"--that does not even make sense!--Great prof!!
okay-attendance is a must, and so is alot of rdgs, plus a handful of quizzes, and a midterm. that is basically it-oh yeah a personal fiction paper which was actually great b/c it gave me a chance to reconnect with family and learn about my family history-i learned alot about film, amazing immigration stories, and so much:)-HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!!
really had to work hard in the class, but it was worth it! Got a good grade and learned a lot of neat stuff! I liked the best that the professor was not uptight but rather easy-going. I liked the quzzes b/c they gave me a chance to earn as many good grades as possible. They are MC, which was not that bad b/c he did not put equal weight on them!
I am glad this class is over probably my worst experience at MSU and i am a senior
Probably my best experience at MSU-and I am a 5th year senior! Truly loved the professor-fun, fair, and funny!
prof was cool, and we were allowed to have an opinion. MSU does not really have any courses that discuss history among Latinos so that fact alone makes this course well worth it. i don't know how class can get a bad rating-i guess b/c some people have never thought about latinos in any meaninful way so when they do they already have a negative vibe
Some of the reviews that are on here are clearly from students who walked into college expecting it to be a breeze. If you want to learn something you have to work, and have an open mind about cultures other than your own. He is extremely fair, and really cares. I've gained a great deal from this man and definitely appreciate it. Must Take him!!
Reaffirmed my decision to be a history major even thougn this class was not exaactly all history. He was flexible about due dates for assignments. Will give you the attention you want without calling you out in class or making you feel akward. Still talk to him on campus!
The class can be a bit overwhelming for a freshman and you have to do the readings if you want to pass. All his exams were designed to show you read & understood. If you're sincere about the class then he willhelp you out. Heck even if you are not sincere he still tries to help out. You can't bs your way through it. Material was REALLY interesting.
alot of readings, but there were more or less okay b/c not all rdgs. on syllabus are required. Plus the professor sent out weekly messages that told us what exactly to focus on. the begining of the class was more film stuff, and the second half focused on mostly lit. stuff. overall, i learned alot from this class and hope to take more with him!
liked the email messages keeping me in the loop about the class, and also the not too strict or serious nature of the professor. learned a lot of good stuff about things and themes never really considered-thanks!
I got a good grade and loved this class--waste of money--are you kidding me-I never realized how closed-minded MSU is--the diverse readings alone and the film clips made this class a winner-please get a clue and an open mind about material that needs to be in greater demand and presence at this school!!!!!!
grade was not as good as i would have liked but that was my fault-i missed a quiz and a number of classes-though the cool thing was the prof was not that crazy critical about it-basically he unnderstood my deal-goog subject, better teacher!
at first I had doubts about he class b/c the syllabus was like a book itself--but within a few weeks i felt much better b/c the teacher is not as uptight as what is written on it. it is more like a bunch of guidelines--typical with most syllabus stuff just more detail. more important, the class was mostly good talks, great films, and decent rdgs.
class was interesting as it covered alot of cool stuff-at least stuff i rarel hear or learn about at MSU. the professor was a bit corky, but not in a bad way-very caring and thoughtful about student needs and concerns. would take another course with prof-oh, i liked that the rdgs called for no book saved me a bunch of $-rdgs posted on blackboard.
Prof. Echeverria is a teacher who always want to help his students to get a better grade. He is an fair grader and proveide pofessional guidance. He is one of the top ten very intelligent teacher in our school. Plus his teaching style is cool and keeps you alive in class! P.S. Prof. Echeverria is HOT!
I had Echeverria for two classes. He is the kindest, and thoughtful man you could ever meet. Take his classes if you want to learn, and he cracks jokes too which are pretty funny. Sometimes not, but i always appreciated the effort. Thanks for a great couple of semesters Prof. E!
The articles were well selected, exciting to read, and not too overwhelming. Professor E teaches the class with so much animation and spontinaity that the students look forward to the lectures. The class consisted of a quizzes, short papers, and a midterm and final. short I would recommend this class, and this professor, to everyone.
I took him for a class that I thought was going to be focused on latino women in film, but we watched very little film at all and we have focused more on latino men more than women. lectures were HORRIBLE and on a good day you might watch 30 sec of a movies. quizzes ever other week on the readings, tests were easy but overall i didnt like this prof
I took this prof. and liked him; we watched a lot of film with a heavy focus on latin american women. class discussion were great, and i really learned alot. of course when some students don't do any readings it makes it hard to have good cons. overall, though, prof. was very understanding and helpful. once i missed a quiz and he let me make it up!
i just had this class. there were alot of stuff to read, and it seemed like we had a quiz or a paper alot..but the class was once a week so what do you expect. as a whole, i did lean some stuff i had never been exposed to before and he kept my interest by relating things to everyday life-for an elective it was a descent course-you can do alot worse
I am shocked to see that so many people liked him. i wouldnt doubt it if he posted those comments himself. 1. he is not hot. 2. the class was so boringggg. 3. did no group work, just sat there every class and listened to him lecture. 4. readings were overwhelming, but i guess manageable if you read a little all week. i didnt like this class/prof.
i wouldnt take this class again if MSU paid me to take it. so dry, the pwrpts have so much wording on them that it impossible to fully understand what its about before the prof goes to the next one. dont expect group work, its a straight lecture. he didnt bother to learn our names, which made me feel like it was pointless to participate
would take another class w/prof. he was caring--he even delayed the midterm one week to make sure everyone had a chance to have access to his rdgs put on blackboard after it crashed. plus, he typed up personal comments for the midterm addressed to me by my first name! fyi, gave me a break when I missed taking a quiz-some peoples expect way too much
great teacher & very interactive, fun, up to date & gives you real life examples..decent rdgs load but many rdgs are not required.. No surprises w/ the course, quizzes can be tricky but it's not bad if you study what he says-oh yeah he actually sends out weekly messages-reeaallly helpful! actually go to class for the education you are paying for!
teacher knows his stuff, and is a pretty cool guy, and course held my interest esp. for night class. all the readings are put on blbd. so if you're broke take him. really seems to care. i was like OMG when he asked us at the last class any thoughts we had about improving the class-students made comments showing that they felt comfortable doing so
Okay professor, I dont agree with most of these comments on here. Maybe Prof Ech leaves himself hot ratings. good guy tho
somethings worked for me in this class where some things did not--nothing major but would have liked to see a few more films, but i know that may have been hard because there just seemed to be so much to cover. prof. was solid as a teacher and pretty patience and helpful. I sat in the front and never saw him seem unsympathetic to student issues
PROF. E DOES'NT EVEN KNOW ABOUT THIS SITE-I MEAN HE IS ONE OF MY ADVISORS AND AS NICE AND HELPFUL AS HE IS HE IS NOT THAT UP TO SPEED ON ONLINE STUFF ASIDE FROM GOOGLE AND WIKI..ANYWAYS, GREAT CLASS-RECOMMEND IF YOU LIKE FILMS, CLASS CHATS!-A FEW TIMES HE TALKED LONGER THAN I WOULD HAVE LIKED BUT THAT IS B/C PPL DO'NT READ-& COMPLAIN-MAKES SENSE:(
Horrible professor when i had him in the fall his horribleness continues i guess MSU doesnt have $$$ to hire good staff
Great professor-just had him for the spring-real friendly not in a weird way, but in a cool, helpful way, well either the person below me is clueless or he improved alot! anyways, good class, great teacher!
good class, thou thought sometimes was a bit heavy on history stuff-but the prof has that background-overall, would recomm! good class diss and he was really great about making up stuff i missed
solid class--missed a couple of classes but it was not the end of the world b/c he let me make of the missed stuff. overall, would recommend if you want to cover stuff that most classes here fail to cover
i wish there were more teachers like this one-he teaches in a direct, plane way while using visuals that make learning both fun and interesting-and he is patient with alot of students that are totally clueless about college level work-i know i sat in front-often heard tooonsss of excuses from students about why they could not do this or that-!!
this goy is really nice but more importnat, the class was a good one. covered alot of ground which was great but at times it seemed like a lot-but the tests are made up so you do not have to know all the things covered just major examples and key points and stuff..will def. take another class with him!
not the most challenging class, but an interesting one-the teach brings in alot of infortmation but it is not hard to follow-plus he gives advice about how to handle the exam and quizzes-at the end of the day, i learned a few things without being frustrated or annoyed-decent class, pretty good prof.
a lot of reading for this class, but the amount decreases when you have a paper or quiz due. I appreciated that since most professors don't really consider the effects of big assignments on your schedule. Even though I didn't have too much interaction with him, when I did he made a point to ask how my other classes were going, which was nice.
"not my world," as for the class topic, but only so many chooses for this mandatory elective. anyways, even though not my fav. topic, the prof. made it relatable to all kinds of people in a balanced way. oeverall, had my doubts, but it turned out okay-decent class, pretty good teacher
good class...first time a took a class talked about spanish people. i leared alot of neat stuff and i thought about things a little differently than i used to. alot of redings, but we did not have to read them all..in the end, highly recomm!
I must admit that I took the class because it was required, but I learned a lot of interesting things about pop culture and the media's portrayal of latin people in film. He was great and really knows his stuff. Awesome Prof! A Must Take!
this techer counts attendance, is desent about being fair with grading, and shows alot of stuff. even though i am not latin or hispanic or whatever, i actually liked the course b/c he tried to get everyone involved and made connections with all kinds of people not just one or the other. also the class was not that hard as long as try a little
one of the best professors i've ever had. he's really nice & gives you a lot of opportunities to succeed in class. i learned a lot of new things in his class. a must takee =]
just took class-it was interesting and cool at the same time. i think i liked most was the fact that the class seemed to be about understanding why things have happened not just that they happened.like when learning about images and identities of people it was about tyring to get why people see people in a certain light you know.
Good Prof. Cares about his subject and class, fair with hw and grading. Do the work and u will do well. 2 Papers and a easy final. A Must take,
Useless in all aspects STAY AWAY he is the destroyer of GPAS
Honestly, I have never met a person who cares so much about his students. He is dedicated and will do anything to help you. I learned a lot in the class and watched a lot of current, interesting videos. There isn't a book, just a bunch of articles. A lot is learned, but there isn't too much work. Would def take him again
this class was one of my favs b/c it was easy-going, and the teach was pretty cool...as long as you came to class and basically did the readings you were straight!
he is a great professor--he actually teaches, you learn a lot, and he's great to talk to outside class. For people who say he's horrible, just remember why you are in college. People forget they are here to READ, WRITE BETTER, AND LEARN. he encourages that!!!
although attend. is a must, it is not that bad b/c classes were fun and interesting. plus alot of media stuff so i was always focused. a few quizzes, but if you do the readings you should be okay. overal, good class and better professor!
found this class taught from a Kools perspective--it was alot of powrpoint stuff, movie clips, and decent class cons-a four quizzes, a midterm, a few papers, and a final-nothing too out of the ordinary-oh, and attendance mattters!
prof. E is such a down-to-earth dude. He really does make a long class bearable and fun through good discussion. Class atmosphere is laid back and comfortable. He is very helpful and wants his students to do well. This class was well worth the commute to MSU. Take this class if you can!!
i can't say enough about prof. e. i'm leaving his class inspired and much more informed about different groups of people! thanx!!!
DO TAKE! He is greaaaaaaaaaaat!!!!! Does care about his students sooooo much!
He is boring. He doesn't have any idea about teaching and he talks to much. Also, if you want to pass this class, do not write anything in the evaluation sheet at the end of the semester, he will def take things against you and lower your grade. In general, his class is boring-300 powerpoint slices all at once, with 10 min brake.
okay going to class is a must, and he does take attend., and sometimes class seems a bit long, but i must say, i did learn some things through the readings, some cool powerpoint, class cons, and some things he said. overall, decent class and very few like it as msu-i'm a fifth year senior so i actually know!!!
DO NOT TAKE!!!! has an attitude problem. does not teach puts up 3000 picture slide show. almost 3 hours of learning nothing
huh, i actually thought the combination of film clips with powerpoint and class chats were just enuff.;-) I am a junior so I have had a chance to see all kinds of teaching styles, and I must say I really have not come across too many teachers that both know how to relate to others, and really care about it. good class, and real good professor!
liked class b/c it covers stuff bit usuaklly taught..and the prof was easy to follow and was fun. i actually thought that he really cared about the students and how we did-so i say, take:-)
He has a ego.. He should not teach he's better off writing a book or staying away from human interaction. If he wrote a book and i saw it on Barnes at Nobles i would pick it up :) and then throw it as far as i could away from me
liked class cauze class was laid back. also the professor really seemed to care for us and do what was in our best interests. in fact, he even pushed back an exam to make sure we were prepared as possible. one of the better ones at msu!
HE SUCKS! DONT TAKE HIM! he gave us a midterm the week before finals week and he still accpects you to complete the final that he doesnt tell you about until the week before. boring and he talks about nothing. even though his class may be easy for a while it then goes to completely impossible and he is not clear at all about what he expects.
HE ROCKS! TAKE HIM! He is so interesting and nice and he talks about stuff that that can relate to. Even though his class may be easy, it does get more challenging but never goes to completely impossible. I really liked that he was open about what to expect, and really seemed to care about us. plus readings are posted so dont have to buy bks!!
endless powerpoint slides. very clear and EXTREMELY DETAILED, kind of funny but odd. fair grader. sends weekly emails to keep you up to date. watched movies in class..2-3 papers, midterm, final no hw. takes attendance every class.
he is energetic & sincere-he will drop major hints & tips for quizzes which helps. Really nice, knows his stuff, and despite writing a book was still available on campus-plus he gave us an extra credit option if we went to the Newark Public Library to report on an exhibit he did there. It was cool and was on display for three months so no biggie
Having little interest in the topic, except to knock out a university requirement I was dreading the class. prof. made it interesting by utilizing film clips, pps, and every day events to introduce class stuff into discussion. He is funny, and was able to teach to all levels in class: the seniors and history majors to frosh with any major-;-)
This professor is fantastic!...one of the best professors at MSU..is so open, real, and caring.does a nice mix of class chats, some lectures..not my favorite, but it is part of the college experience:-(.overall a good class!!!;-)
A very preachy course, but he has a great personality. Unfortunately you will be bored with his class.
He's very passionate and preachy, talks a lot. But if your of Latin descent then it should be interesting as it was for me. Short papers are easy as well as the quizzes just read the material pay attention and generate an opinion and you will be fine. He likes to hear your opinion rather than "the right answer" I would reccommend taking him
Interesting class-and really interesting professor. He does talk a lot, but I liked his corky brand of humor and the way brokedown history, and then made it seem really relevant to today. He also really is sincere, and does seem to care about students. When I missed a few classes he actually emailed me to see if I was okay, and to help me catch up!
He was an AMAZING professor! However, if you're a slacker he'll probably fail you. Just come to class and show interest and its a guaranteed A. He is so helpful and has awesome insight. HE IS FABULOUSLY AWESOME! It was so interesting I actually didn't want to miss class. Probably the most interesting professor I have ever had-period!!!!:-)
No Text Required, attendance is mandatory, for Latin American history he didn't have any exams. Just 4 quizzes and a final project. 3 Small 1 page papers and 1 large 6-8 page paper. He grades papers and quizzes very lightly, the quizzes are 1 multi choice question & 3 large open ended questions. Final Proj., Attendance,Quizzes, and the Papers =%25
Doesn't grade work and post it to blackboard. Provides no feed back. Unclear directions and tons of reading. I took it spring last year and he gave ZERO As. Don't take him .
He grades work really fast; always puts it online on blackboard; and then even emails students detailed feedback about how they got the grade they got! Even though I did not always agree; but I valued the feedback. Readings are a little much, but they are mostly good! Def. take him!!!
I took his class on Latin American History at Columbia and I always hated attending his lectures, which drag on for hour while the professor wanders around on themes that don't address the class material. His grading is unclear--all the papers I wrote for the class received a 90+ but somehow my final grade was cut down to B. He's inaccessible too
