She's not bad, but she uses powerpoint presentations and just lectures by reading off of these slides. She doesn't really include any personal opinions and doesn't really encourage any class discussion in regards to the topics being talked about. Her tests aren't hard, but are written unclearly
This is a great class and Prof. DeFour runs it very well, she's also got a good sense of humour which is nice. =)
She has a great sense of humor so it keeps the class awake. Her tests are pretty much straight from the text or the notes. very pleasant professor.
i'm not sure of her competence, though that may be because it takes her 12 minutes to get out a sentence..sigh.
Horrible professor!! i do not and will NEVER take another class with her again!! She needs to forget the ghetto too, and teaching lessons too!!
If attendance didnt count. You'd be able to come on test days and as long as you printed out the notes from the web and read along with the book, you'd do fine. I would read the paper during class. She repeats herself a thousand times, her entire lesson is word for word with the book. She's alright.
I took her class in Sprint 2003 and wasn't interested in the topic. She made cd's for everyone of all of the papers and left to go out while we took the final. What more could you ask for?
She stinks. Classes are pointless because one, she can't teach for sh*t, and two, nothing from the lectures is on the tests (all from the book). She is another Ph.D. who think she can teach just because she spent a long time in the field. She just does not know how to teach at all.
lectures are straight out of the book, uses powerpoint and outlines of chapters, so there's really no reason to take notes if you read. she did take attendence for fall 04 and it did count. she seems confused but she's cool
Powerpoint and book lectures. Fairly boring, multiple choice tests. She doesn't do much to keep the class interesting.
This professor stinks! She is very close-minded and subliminally tries to impose her beliefs on her students. She refuses to accept that women are not nor will they ever be men
All I can say is after I took her class, I changed my major (no joke). I don't know who told her she could teach, but that person should be put to sleep. She is by far, the nastiest person I have ever come in contact with. An absolute waste to Hunter College.
Defour is by far one of the stupidiest instructor I have ever encounted. she is not helpful at all. The course is supposed to be interesting but it turned out to be one of the most boring class ever! Her exams are confusing. She cannot teach for sure. She needs to go back to school and learn how to teach.
boring, but ok
I have never had such a boring and nasty professor in my life!!! She is very narrow-minded, unhelpful, and has a nasty attitude when asked for help. She cannot teach and should not teach! Class is supposed to be very interesting but not with her. Try to avoid her classes!
sometimes, not know what she is saying. dont have good organized note. jumping subject.
OMG!!! People, stay away! She is unbeliveably boring, uclear and has a sick attitude. Her notes are unorganized. Homework is usually easy but pointless. Tests are tough! And you will not get any help from her or her TA because they think they are the center of the univerce!
she needs to be locked up. She's a horrible human being. She did not expand my knowledge in this class. her class is boring, dreary, and wasteful. do not take her class. You'll just going to end up with a C in the class no matter how freaking hard you try to boost up your grades!
She is extremely boring...but she does give a lot of extra credit assignments. Her tests are not that hard...if you read the book u'll pass...her attitude is a little mean...her notes are not the best.
I DON'T know why people don't like her. She was great! Her notes were great. Had no paper to do and as long as you read and attend class its on easy A. Funny as well. I enjoyed the class even if it started at 8am for me. I highly recommend her. Plus her notes were fine (believe me, I've seen worse notes that did not make sense). Take her class
It's a relatively easy A as long as you read the book and notes. She is unhelpful and boring that's for sure. And yes she is very mean with her students, but her TA is even worse. If you don't want to learn anything and just want an A you should take this class.
Not the best professor..she's boring and doesn't make the class interesting at all. Her notes are straight from the text. Her tests are tricky, you have to read the text and study it very carefully to do well on the tests. Only good part of the class was the extra credit she gives, it brought my grade up from a B to an A+!
Psych of Ethnic&Cultural ID- DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN'T HANDLE EXCESSIVE READING ASSIGNMENTS. Stacks of very DENSE readings every week. A 1 pg. paper due WEEKLY, + a 10 pg. paper and a final 15-20 pg. paper. Be prepared to sacrifice some of your social life and sleep! Apart from that it is an interesting course & She occasionally says funny things
I emailed her back in MAY when I registered to tell her I'd be in Africa for 2 weeks in November for a school-related trip. She replies back to me THE DAY BEFORE CLASSES START with this flippant, nasty email telling me there's no way I can pass her class. She is rude, unhelpful, and has a nasty attitude before you even MEET her. Def. Avoid.
i got lucky and took her when she had a huge auditorium for her class so she didnt give out a paper to write. therefore it depends how big the class is when you get her. without the paper the class was a breeze. no complaints just show up, take decents notes and do the reading and you will have no problems with this class.
The class is interesting but she makes it difficult by hard tests which have very tricky questions, you can improve your grade by doing some easy extra stuff online
interesting class. She is tough but if you read the book and study her notes you're good
average professor, can't really say much about her, gives much extra credit.... tests are tricky, homeworks interesting
She is a mixture of boring and amusing. However you do learn a lot about gender diffrences. The exams were tricky and hard, so read. You have to check your black board every day because she does not announce the extra credit, so check it obsesively. The book is self explanitory and you will do avarage or better. The Papers are not hard. The TA is bad.
Pretty good class. Prof was really interesting. Part were boring if youve taken any other 200+ level psych class. Overall really good and really helpful. No paper, we had 3 multiple choice tests, 3 hw assignments, final, and a bunch of e.c. questions online
I DONT GET WHAT PEOPLE COMPLAIN ABOUT. SHE IS GREAT. HER TEST ARE FAIR AND SHE GIVES A TON OF EXTRA CREDIT. SHE WANTS TO GIVE As.
This class has got to be one of the easiest classes to get an A+ in. HWs are easy, exams aren't hard at all, for the most part it's common sense. There are ALOT of "curvebusters", these are questions she post on blackboard in which you answer, that allows you to obtain points to add in to your exam grades.
Very good professor. The homeworks are easy and the class is interesting. ONE thing is you have to go to class on time all the time. If you are late for an exam she wont let you take it. Shes very fair and is always willing to help
She's great.Lots of extra credit, exams are easy and the final is optional,3 short HW assigments. The tests reflected everything on the book, you'll do find if you read the book and go to class.Makes the subject interesting and has a great sense of humor.Overall great professor
LIKE EVERYONE SAID SHE IS VERY EASY..YOU HAVE TO BE EXTREMELY DUMB TO FAIL THIS CLASS..HOWEVER ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED AND WORTH 50 POINTS. BUT IF YOU MISS A FEW CLASSES THERE ARE ALWAYS CURVE BUSTERS(EXTRA CREDIT POINTS) TO MAKE UP FOR IT. AND DON'T BUY THE KALEIDOSCOPE OF GENDER..SHE PUTS THE READINGS ON ERESERVE.
I dont understand how people failed this class. You'd have to be borderline retarded. She gave seventy...7-0...sev-en-tyyy extra credit points. People complaining about handing in homework, learn how to read and listen. Even some of the people who don't know how to speak english in the class knew to submit it through Blackboard. C'mon now...GOSH!
Class is easy. Just do curve busters, hand in hws and if you pass the tests, you can get an easy A. But she is not exactly such a people person though.
LOVED HER..LOVED THE CLASS.. Very interesting readings and lectures.. she gives a number of test and 3 homework assignments, which are mostly based on you and your life experiences. She gives a TOOONNN of curve busters and extra credit.. must show up for class, if you do the curve busters and go to class you will pass bcuz everything in the book is
Evil! She gave extra credit but never told anyone when it would be posted on blackboard and left it on for like a day. Who has time to constantly check that thing?! She's got an attitude problem too!
Very easy class...just go to class and check ur blackboard constantly for assignments and extra credit, which she Constantly gave...actually Read material b4 a test and u'll get a good grade...turn in hws on time and to BB and u'll get an A w/o even takin the final like i did...Easy! Loved it...Who Cares if she isnt nice, we dont have to b friends!
No good. Gives an enormous amount of work, has a very bazaar grading system and to top it off a very poor attitude. Take her class at your own risk.
Her confidence comes off real strong in her attitude but her teaching skills are not all that great. You have to really bust chops to get a decent grade in her class. Oh yeah, and very boring.
EXCELLENT professor.Amazing material, kept it interesting. It's LITERALLY impossible for someone to fail this class, that just means your damn lazy.3Tests on material she lectures, which comes right out of the tb so read it. 1 Final. Lowest grade gets dropped. Tons of CBs, just check bb regularly, she leaves them up for a while. taking her now A+
She is a good professor. Very organized, no surprises on the tests. Just read the books and listen to her in lecture. She also gives topics from the actual test to study from. And she also gives extra credit like CRAZY. I don't even have to take the final since she counts the top three tests. Totally recommend this class and it is interesting.
the class is VERY boring but easy grade. All her lectures from the book. Just read the text, do the curve busters and you'll get the grade u want
She's the worst. Boring lectures. Wants you to remember specific stats for the tests. Curve busters are on blackboard which is unreliable. As far as trying to participate, unless you are sitting in the front, you will have your hand up for ten minutes before giving up. Basically, I wasted money and time to be in this class. Oh yeah-we watched Opra
DO NOT TAKE HER! She doesn't know how to spell or speak and THEREFORE should not TEACH! She reads right off powerpoint.(she didn't even write it.) She claims that BB is "not reliable" yet, she puts all extra credit on it, doesn't tell us when its there & expects us to not have a life & be able to check it constantly. DO NOT TAKE HER! GRR!
Just sit in her class and you'll have the best nap of your life. Her voice takes you right to lala land. She reads right off of the powerpoints. Instead of learning about the psychology of women, you know...their minds, habits etc.. I found myself caught up in some weird lecture of women constantly being victimized by men and society.Ugh..zzzzzZZ
Professor Defour doesn't even make her own powerpoint slides. She constantly belittles and condescends students and test questions are difficult because of wording and typos. Avoid her if you can!
I'm not gonna say anything about her attitude , since most of us have problems with that , however her teaching style leaves a lot to be desired : her exams are extremely poorly developed , multiple typos and unclear questions , no question can be asked regarding the wording since she claims "I do not make these exams" the question comes up "Who do
The worst professor ever!...I should have pay attention to the comments made by people before I register for this class. Tests are so tricky. Take her class at your own risk!.
Her tests are easy, but can be tricky if you don't read the book. The book is much better than her boring lecture. She talks with lots of pauses and give weird examples. She gives 3 hw assignments and lots of curve busters (bonuses) to help you get that A. The final is optional if you're happy with your grades.
Her lecture is ok, exams are tricky (don't even think you did well on your exam until you get the result), lots of extra credit (you gotta pay attention to blackboard all the time). The biggest problem is, she NEVER answers your emails! Make sure to contact her TA, she is the only hope in this class.
not that hard, just come to class, listen and take notes. her exams are tricky, but she gives lots of extra credit and drops one test.
It is true that she isn't a great lecturer - she doesn't speak in full sentences and often, her point doesn't come across clearly. 3 homework assign. that a basically free pts. if you do them; 4 exams + a final - drops lowest; tons of extra credit. Tests a conceptual + tricky so you must study. Not a hard A but you have to do the work-no scrimpin
For such huge classes, she should really take more time on the slides instead of rushing- I can never copy the whole thing down (I write FAST), and no, she doesn't upload them. Despite reading the books carefully, a majority of the test questions are tricky. HWs and Extra credits did not help me. Grades can also be unfair: 342/490 = 70%, but is a D
Horrible! Tests are tricky even though the material is straight from the textbooks. Even if you studied the chapters word for word, you'll end up with a poor grade. You don't know if you did well until you get the result. She does give out a bunch of extra credit but you have to check BB constantly because she doesn't keep them up for more than a d
Goes thru pp slides really fast. Tests are ridiculously tricky. She does it on purpose. Offers a lot of extra credit on bb. You have to constantly check it everyday because she doesnt tell you its up there. Drops the lowest grade so final is optional but you might want to take them bc u may not have done too good on the previous 3 exams
Do yourself a favor, DO NOT take her!!!
if you want to do well in a psych class, take anyone but her. im STILL waiting on a response to an email, her tests are horrible .. you can study the the chapters from beginning to end, and she will pick the most ridiculous questions to ask!! she mumbles a lot, i honestly thought she was talking to herself half the time, and has quite the attitude.
This professor is not as bad as what everyone saids. She gives something call the "Curve buster" which is extra credit and these points will be added to your final grade. It's pretty easy to jump from one letter grade to the other just by doing curve busters.
Honestly, although the textbook is important to read, you really need to listen to her to be able to perform well on the tests. She'll hint heavily on the answers in class. They are really tricky though. Only problem is: she's an awful lecturer. 1h15m class and only about 6 completed thoughts/sentences. Quite ludicrous, and rude to varying opinions
Great Professor. She tells you what's going to be on the exam in the class prior, just make sure you show up and take notes. Her attitude could use some work when it comes to students talking and walking in late, but I can't really hold it against her because she explains everything well.
She is not easy but then again what class is. You have to read the book and go to class because she does not post slides. she gives out a ton of extra credit which helped me tremendously. I got an A but it was definitely worked for. interesting class overall.. really enjoyed her.
shes a good professor. when she lectures, its not boring or anything. she passes the slides too quick though. you need the textbook because some of the questions on the test will come from it! in class the material might sound like common knowledge but you actually have to study. the tests are tricky! she also gives lots of extra credit chances.
the worst psy prof i have ever had...try not to take her if you don't have to!! the class is mega boring!! and the test is so hard....
shes an okay professor. Her tests are tricky and youll really need to read the textbook. i didnt really attend classes cause its all from the book. she gives tons of extra credit. I got an A. it was too easy for me
She is really bad prof !!! Exams are really tricky, and lectures are horrible ! Don't take her class !!!!!!
Do yourself and GPA a favor, dont take her class. She gets off topic during lectures. Her slides go by so quick and everything may seem like common sense but her test are very tricky and have material thats in the textbook. Her extra credit/curve busters are posted out of the blue so you dont know. Shes the worst psyc prof ive taken. terrible
Professor Defour is not always clear, and yes she does go through ppts too quickly, but getting an A is easy if you read and do "curve busters". Tests are straight from textbook. If you don't read then you won't succeed in this class. Fortunately, the textbook is extremely interesting and her curve busters boosted my grade from a "B-" to an "A"
Although she's not a great professor, her class is easy to pass. Attendance is not mandatory and readings aren't necessarily mandatory either. I was able to get an A in the course just looking up the key terms from the textbook and doing the curve busters.
Its a pretty straightforward class. Just read the textbook and slides and make sure you do the curvebusters.
Easy class, but you don't learn much. Pick another class if you want to learn, take this if you need easy grades.
Her exams are long and boring. Make sure you do the curve busters if you take her.
I will be honest that she is not very clear when it comes to test. She puts two answers that are correct and tells you to pick the one that matches better, so even though something seems right it might be wrong. She is very helpful and will answer all of your questions. Her study questions for exams are essential. Pay attention to videos!!
I had her for both Women In Psychology as well as Cultural Psychology. W.I.G was a bit shaky but she kept it real with the class and was unapologetically a black woman teaching this class. For C.P she was awesome and a lot more laid back. It was pretty much an easy A. There were two online test and a group paper.
Class and exams are heavily based on articles assigned. She is awful in terms of keeping the lectures interesting, grading time, and has an unclear grading criteria. We didn't get our midterm grades until last day of class. But, do the assignment, come to class, do okay on tests and you'll get an A.
she a good person. she not clear on what she wants, unable to answer questions.
her lectures are so boring! currently taking one of her courses! she means well, but eveything is so disorganized. I do not feel like learning anything.
Her lectures are boring but attendance is mandatory. Videos shown in class will appear on tests. There are 4 exams, the final one cumulative and optional. She offers a lot of extra credit that will boost your grade. Read the book, study her slides, take occasional notes and you should do fine. The subject itself is interesting.
My biggest challenge in this course was her test especially multiple choice. extremely long and it feels like she is trying to trick you. She doesn't give much time to do things on blackboard which I find extremely annoying. The test reviews are not like the test make sure you read the text book.
Get ready to read! must have the textbook, she is a tough grader and has you doing a lot of assignments on blackboard make sure you don't miss one because she would hold your grade against it, she is a really tough grader I really dislike her grading criteria and she makes you work for it. Her lectures are boring and she is kind of strict. :(
If possible take a different professor. Lectures were boring and I never payed attention. You are way better off learning from the textbook than you are attending class but attendance counts. Do the curve busters. Watch the videos she shows in class or assigns!!! If you can teach yourself then you will be fine.
This professor is not a great one at all. She used no text book for the class and assigns up to 8 readings of scientific journal articles per week. She expects an essay every week and assigns a massive research project that she grades periodical updates on. She sits in class and hardly says anything. Do not take her. I don't feel like I learned.
She's extremely straightforward her lectures are interesting and you barely need to read the textbook. Pay attention in class and you'll pass all her exams.
She is very tolerable professor. Do the curve busters, come to class, and pay attention to the slides.
Her exams are more difficult than other exams in the psychology department but based on your knowledge of the material. She provides an in depth study guide before exams which is helpful. The final is optional if you are happy with your other exam grades. She goes very quickly through the slides so read the textbook. Do the curve busters!
She means well. but. Very unclear when it comes to explaining assignments. A majority of the students had no idea what she was talking about. Boring lectures. She usually just sits there and says little to nothing. Take a different professor if you can.
Please avoid at all costs. Very confusing professor. The class as a whole had no idea what she was talking about from the beginning of the semester till the day she posted grades. Completely incompetent. Means well, but cannot get a legit class going.
PLEASE AVOID. Do not take the chance. Her class is extremely boring and very disorganized. She lectures all class and no one is of interest by her content. Graded by a few things. Pop quizzes. Horrible class overall. If you can avoid her, please do. I regret wasting my time.
Shes honestly just not a great teacher. If you ask her specific questions she just tells you to read the book, mostly because I dont think she knows much about the material herself. Only goes briefly into subjects then expects you to know in depth about the material for exams.
SUPER disorganized. Literally never had a professor been this disorganized. She doesn't even know whats on her own exams. Every time you ask her a question, she'll either say "we went over this already" or "its in the textbook." If she didn't curve our grades or gave out curvebusters every single person in that class would've failed.
Prof DeFour is very nice and means well, but not really the greatest professor. If youre just taking the class for a good grade, shes good because she gives so much extra credit you could have in the 80s on your tests and still end with a high grade. But shes very disorganized and her lectures are hard to follow and a little boring because of that.
Mixed bag; knows her stuff and is a good person but lectures/questions/assignments are hard to follow and/or understand at times. Encourages participation and is supportive of things people say unless they're really off. Sometimes struggles to remember things during class, periodically gives class time to work on projects rather than lecture.
I dont have really anything bad to say about her teaching style. she's a solid professor who is is a easy grade and everything is super clear. I would recommend.
She's a very relaxing professor, gives a lot of work but it's manageable and helps keep you on track. I learn more from the work than her actual lectures. Her exams are long (50 multiple choice, and 6-8 short answers) but they most of them are repeated questions from the homework / quizzes she gives. She grades based on completion not by quality.
This is arguably the worst professor I have ever had at Hunter. She is disorganized, unclear on what she wants or how she grades, does not respond to emails as they are unproductive in her opinion, and speaks at a sloths pace. The entire semester I was 50/50 guessing whether I'm getting an A or an F. I DO NOT recommend her.
4 exams (drops lowest grade), participation, chapter quizzes. She seemed like she had no idea what she was teaching and is overall just not a great professor. You'll get an A if you study and do the work. I wouldn't take her again
Very rude professor. Treats students as if we were in high school, apparently we shouldn't use the bathroom during class since it is "only 75 minutes long." You ask her a question and she gives you attitude. You try to express concerns about her exams, she finds a way to fault you for it. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!
DONT CONSIDER HER AT ALL. She doesn't post her lecture slides, and if you go to class she basically just mumbles to herself, and breeze through all her slides leaving EVERYONE confused. She doesn't come up with her own exams so literally none of the exams match the material taught in class. She doesn't take feedbacks and attendance is mandatory
I'm going to start off by saying this she does nothing to help you pick up your exam grades whenever we would ask her questions she would give an attitude and during exams, she didn't even tell us clear instructions at alll what we need to do she's rude and as well she would treat us like high schoolers as well. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!
Prof Defour was one of the most tedious, uninteresting, and unprepared professors I have ever had in my life. Her entire course content was basically a crash course for boys who have never experienced the touch of a woman and likely never will. 50% of class time was just her trying to fix her slides. Her quizzes were easy enough tho.
I feel kind of bad writing this review but I would never take a class with her again. Realistically, the workload was expected for a 300 level class, even though I know some students complained. Her deadlines and grading was so unclear you never knew what she wanted. Only good thing was that the exams/quizzes were online and easy to do.
Quizzes are online, No midterm but there a final in-person. don't share her slides, attendance is mandatory. Her class was honestly easy though. she grade stuff literally the last week.
As you can see her negative reviews go back to the early 2000s and we have all had the same complaints. The class is easy but she makes it so hard to like her. For exam 3 she told us she FORGOT to post a study guide and then tried to blame it on us because "nobody reminded her till Tuesday". It is literally her one job.
If you can avoid this class, do so. She will not provide you with slides or anything other than thick textbooks. She won't respond to your email, and when you ask for help you will get an attitude/rude response. I didn't understand much of her lectures(she rambles and skips slides rapidly). I got by because my classmates were helpful.
By far one of the worse professors at this college. She doesn't share her slides and has an attitude like ALL THE TIME. Her exams are difficult and long. They are composed of multiple choice and short answer which requires so much memorization if you want to pass..
Take any other PSYCH 300!! She doesn't do anything. had the students lead lectures for the half the semester. SUPERR DISORGANZIED. like its not even joke. doesnt know what she wants to do most of the time. Im writing my final rn, and I'm still confused on what she is expecting. She is a mess. Stay away. Plus, she doesn't answer emails.
I was trying to give this professor the benefit of the doubt, but the whole semester was messy and disorganized. Assignments were not always clear, and it was hard to get direct answers. She also has a bit of an attitude which at times I can understand, but at the end of the day, we're students and need CLEAR direction. Take any other professor.
Her lectures were lackluster. I attended the majority of the classes, but never have I left her class feeling like I learned something. There's a lack of self-confidence in her that I feel the class can sense, and this by no means is an attack on her character, but rather a concern I have. I'm disappointed in this class.
Avoid this class at ALL COST. I wish someone would've told me not to take this class. This class is supposed to be an easy A. However, she makes it really hard for us to achieve a good grade. Do yourself a favor and take any other class but hers.
I really wanted to like her and this class was supposed to be interesting and easy. I found myself, more often than not, being frustrated by how disorganized she was, how unclear the assignments were, and how unclear her grading was. Don't expect to receive an email back from her unless its a dire emergency. Disappointed in this experience.
The professor can be strict, but if you keep up with the readings and do the curve busters, you'll be fine. Unstuck AI was really helpful for test prep - definitely recommend giving it a try.
basically unreachable outside of class. assigns work, sets the wrong date, doesn't communicate, then the whole class is blindsided by an assignment that we didn't know we had. no slides posted, runs thru them super fast. brightspace was unorganized and you couldn't find ANYTHING without having to click thru everything.
Get ready to work it's college! do I recommend taking her if you got 5-6 classes absolutely NOT! but she's caring , she doesn't check her email often but trust me , she will work with you.
Doesnt share slides so make sure you're in class or someone sends you their notes. I recommend coming to class because she uses an app to track attendance and participation which will go to your grade. Overall, not a bad class. Lectures are based off the reading so if you did it, you'll be fine tuning out. Exams were kinda tricky with wording tho.
