She's great. I took 218R from her and she actually seemed to genuinely to care about us growing as writers. Great feedback, willing to meet, discuss, and revise writing. Loved the writing assignments, not too many but I actually feel like I'm a better writer without being overly stressed with crazy deadlines. Take her class!!!
I loved this class! Sister Young was an amazing teacher and you can tell that she values her students. She wants you to do well and you can feel it. She is an exceptional human being.
Prof. Young is a brilliant writer and, more importantly, a remarkable teacher. Her lectures, the reading and the assignments are all worthwhile. You will leave her class a better writer. She must spend a ridiculous amount of time grading, because she always gives a ton of specific, insightful commentary on your work. Take a class from Prof. Young!
You are given a chance to learn great writing skills. There is a lot of reading and writing of papers. It is a very time consuming class BUT a really good one.
I am so glad that I took 218R from Darlene Young. I have never learned so much about writing! I would take it from her again in a heartbeat. She really cares about her students and she is willing to work with you if you are willing to work with her. She cares so much! She even invited us to her house for Thanksgiving if we needed a place to go. :)
Sister Young is one of the hardest professors I had but she is the best one too. She challenges her students. I loved her class and her genuine desire to help students become better writers shows in the work loud she gives, which is a fair amount. Do fear because she also provides a lot of help for her students. She will not give up on a student.
Prof. Young is amazing. There is a lot of writing, which is a good thing, since you signed up for a writing class. You're learning along the way, so she doesn't grade off of content, but off of improvement. She provides great feedback that has helped me become a better writer. Take her if you can!
I felt like some of the feedback I got on my papers was a little frustrating because it was more about personal preference than actual craft. But this class is great for forcing you to write. It's a lot of work, but easy to get an A because most assignments are graded based on correct completion, not quality of writing. It's a safe space to write.
Sister Young is great! She cares about students having a good experience in addition to progressing. She went out of her way to help us. She's published a lot of material and really knows her stuff. She also ties the gospel into her lessons. And, as a side note, sometimes she brings doughnuts randomly to class. Do the homework and you'll be fine.
I am not a big writer, and this class helped me a lot. Sister Young is very engaged in her teaching as well as giving us feedback in our writing. I am thankful I took this class from her because she really takes the time with each student. Also, she answers to emails very quickly and the classes are way fun!
This class was awesome. I've never been a writer and now all I can do is write! Sister Young is inspiring, and she gives you the tools and help you need to become a better writer. She has great lectures. There are a lot of readings, but they are helpful in your assignments. Take the class!
Sister Young is a wonderful professor who really cares about helping her students learn and grow. If you show up to class, do all the assignments, and complete the reading, you will get an A. She gives you plenty of opportunities to fix mistakes in papers, and to improve your final product, but there are quite a few assignments and readings.
It's a writing class, so naturally there was a lot of writing to be done. This also went hand in hand with the amount of readings. However, it was all interesting content, so it wasn't drudgery at all.
Tons of reading, some papers, no tests. Attendance graded heavily.
Creative writing is not an easy class by any means. Sister Young expects students to work hard, but gives them the tools necessary to succeed. This class has pushed me more than I've ever been pushed as a writer, but it has also helped me improve more than I expected.
Sister Young is fantastic! She knows what she is doing for sure. I grew so much as a writer through taking her class! Sure, the class is hard, but it was so much fun and I loved every minute of it! She loves us as students and even invited us to come to Thanksgiving dinner with her family if we had no where to go. She's just an awesome woman!
Mrs. Young helped me get really comfortable as a writer, and even though she gives a lot of feedback and expects a lot of revision, thats a good thing!
Sister Young avoids bias when it comes to style in writing, which is super nice and allows me to write as I please.
I really enjoyed taking a class from Sister Young. She has really good insights with our assignments and writing in general. Taking this class has taught me a lot more about different ways to approach writing and given me great tips for how to become a better writer.
Great class, would recommend heavily for people who want to write one day
Professor Young takes into account that people come to class with different skill levels, so most of the assignments are graded solely on following all the instructions and not on talent. The final assignments are graded a bit more harshly on overall quality and improvement, but the other assignments balance this so an A is very possible.
Outstanding job of instructing on the material. Great examples, outstanding feedback. If you want to get better she is outstanding. If you are trying to just get by, I would find someone better. She makes you want to be your best, and then helps you understand how to get there.
This was a challenging course, but it taught me so much. There is a lot of reading, but everything assigned is interesting. The grading in this class is based on progress and completion. It is not based on how good of a writer you are, and from experience I can say that your writing will be better afterwards no matter how much experience you have.
Sister Young knows what she's talking about and is quick to give feedback or extra help. She is real with you about what you can do to improve while still encouraging you to write how you want to write. She conveys the rules and tricks of writing in a simple way that makes it less overwhelming. You'll be a better writer because of this class.
I really liked taking ENG218 from Sister Young! She gives great feedback. There is quite a bit of homework so it's more time consuming than an average 200 level class. Lots of reading and writing assignments, but nothing boring. You don't have to be a great writer to take the class, either, but your writing skills will definitely improve!
You have to push yourself to try new things, but you get good feedback and if you do your best and meet her grading criteria, you are graded generously. If you do what she asks, you will not have a problem getting an A. If you are intimidated by creative writing, Darlene is good at helping you feel comfortable experimenting with low stakes.
Prof. Young is a phenomenal teacher. She views learning as something to be enjoyed and will work with you to give you the grade you want as long as you put in the effort and turn in assignments on time. She is also extremely helpful and willing to meet outside of class and give you extra feedback to help improve your writing.
Great at presenting projects, super flexible, easy/fun readings, and is willing to give extra credit if you work for it.
This class does require quite a bit of reading and homework, but it is doable and is so worth it! Even after 4 months you feel like a way better writer. Take this class with Sister Young, and you won't regret it!
This is a fun class, and Darlene is very good at teaching how to write well. She estbalishes good grammar rules after the poetry unit, and is willing to work with you, if you ask her for help via email or after class. Will push you to come up with new and fresh content so avoid common fairy tale tropes.
Prof Young cares about her students. She's encouraging and willing to work with you. You have to do the work to get an A, but it's not challenging if you want to become a better writer. There are group projects and attending class matters. She kind of looks down on fiction writing, but only because she loves poetry and thinks it's underrated.
Professor Young is genuine and passionate about writing. Classes were interesting and I learned a lot. She is picky about grammar and you will read a lot. The readings as good. This class has a lot of assignments, but if you do them, she will reward you. She takes a lot of time giving feedback on papers which is very helpful.
Sister Young is a nice and caring professor. I was not as much fan of the heavy number of readings from Mormon authors and would have preferred to have more variety, but otherwise, I feel like Sister Young is a great person and a truly involved professor
Professor Young does a great job of giving every student a chance to receive clear feedback and improve as a writer. It is evident that she cares about her students' success.
I seriously loved this class. Sis. Young does a great job of making this class fun and enjoyable but also super informative. She obviously knows her stuff and is always willing to give super helpful feedback--even after you aren't her student anymore. I felt like my writing abilities improved substantially, and I always wanted to come to class.
The class is centered around writing (Our tests were writing assignments), and the difficulty really depends on how much work you want to put in. Darlene Young makes sure to give you all the tools you need to succeed, and effort alone gets you a good grade. There are a lot of writing assignments, and a few partner assignments, but I enjoyed them.
She taught me so much about sensory writing, and opened up my mind to lots of different ways of thinking about writing. She explained real-world experiences about publishing and writing. I got a lot out of her class! Take her class!
The workload seemed to be a bit much at times, but the grading is super lenient, so you get full credit on pretty much everything if you turn it on time, and getting an A isn't super hard. If you're willing to work for it a little bit you can really learn a lot.
I honestly loved this class. I laughed, I cried (in a good way), and overall had a great experience and learned a lot. She took time to get to know us, and although there was fair amount of readin/writing, she gave a lot of detailed feedback on our assignments that was SUPER helpful.
Professor Young is great; she really cares about helping you improve your ability to write! She's really good at returning emails and will give you as much feedback as you can handle. Class can be a little dry, but the readings are usually interesting/instructive. There's a bit of group work and a lot of peer review, but nothing too painful.
Darlene is a super great teacher. I was having a really difficult semester and she was so understanding when I came to her with my concerns. The assignments are all interesting and incredibly helpful. She gives great feedback, especially since this will not the last draft of some projects for some writers.
A fair bit of work: something is due almost every period. Gives good and detailed feedback most of the time. Open with the class. Readings are hit and miss, but they do the job.
Excellent class, I've really come to love writing after taking it.
There is a lot of work in this class but the nice part is that as long as you do it all you'll get an A but most of it is fun to do anyways so it's not a big deal. Most of the work is given full credit as long as you completed it by the deadline and fulfilled the basic requirements which she is always very clear on.
I loved this class. All the teachers in the English department want to teach English 218 so the ones who get there want to stay. Darlene's class makes you a better writer and she's genuinely interested in your work and improvement. There are a few short group projects and a weekly 1 page response that goes with her assigned reading. TAKE THIS CLASS
Great professor. She really cares about her students and their success. Sometimes it felt like there were too many assignments due at a time, but even so the readings were engaging and inspirational. It makes sense that the class is participation heavy, but it's unfortunate that there have to be so many grades to "force" work. Took the fun out.
She was one of my favorite professors. Really engaging, she really tried to tailor her lessons to help us grow and develop. She really cared also about our mental and physical wellbeing and tried to elevate the heavy readings required for the course. Readings can be sometimes overwhelming at times along with the assignments but still a great class
Darlene is a wonderful professor who cares about the subject that she is teaching as well as the students she is teaching the subject to. There is a lot of reading, but it is not too difficult if you are willing to set aside a chunk of time. It is enjoyable reading material, so that helps. I would recommend this class!
Sister Young is an amazing professor. I would highly recommend taking her class if you want to truly grow as a writer. I learned so much!
Sister Young is so good at walking you through the writing process from beginning to end. Learned so much!
A little bit heavy on connecting course to Mormonism and very heavy on writing assignments, but overall wonderful
Sister Young is awesome! I loved this class and I highly recommend taking it from her!
Sister Young is amazing. Yes, she gives you homework that pushes you. BUT if you do it the best that you can she will give you full points. She encourages creativity and therefore will not dock points on content as long as you try. She is very accessible outside of class. I emailed her for help once and she replied in less than ten minutes.
Great class for both new or practiced writers. Assignments/readings favor discovery writers, so if you like to outline, might not be for you, unless you're interested in learning different techniques. Good place to practice--graded on effort, not quality (thank heavens). Lectures are well prepared and interesting. Darlene is a star.
Darlene is a good teacher. She is still new to the college method of teaching but at the rate she is going she will be a great professor in no time. Highly recommended.
This class was great. I learned a lot about writing--different techniques, what to do, what not to do. I felt like I produced really great and meaningful content in this class. In order to get better you have to practice, so there's quite a bit of writing and reading that goes along with this class. The good news is if you do it you'll get an A.
Darlene is a super great professor who is clear in her teaching and grading, you basically grade yourself on the major papers! As long as you do the homework you will pass, and learn a lot about writing as well. Great class and worth the time! Fun assignments too.
Darlene is a great professor that I think really taught me how to think differently about writing. However, if you're wanting an easy A this is not your class. There are plenty of assignments given in this class but they were for the benefit of the student.
Darlene is such a sweet teacher and the class is a blast. There's a lot of work, but it's all creative.
This was a great elective that forced me to drastically improve as a writer. She definitely spends extra time on poetry, as it is her expertise, but those skills transferred directly to my ability to write fiction, so don't dismiss it.
She knows the subject and has real world experience in the field. Class was usually pretty interesting. The attendance policy is a little extreme, but I believe that's more the fault of the English program than the teacher. I also didn't think that the packet we were supposed to buy contained anything we couldn't have done without.
She cares about us and treats us like friends. She is great at teaching the subject and at giving constructive feedback. My wrigint improved more than I thought possible because of her.
Very thoughtful and provides interesting insights. Always willing to help.
Dr. Young was one of my favorite writing professors! She really helped my writing improve --but she makes you work for that improvement. Be prepared for some critiques on your writing, but also for compliments too! She really emphasizes attendance, so if you don't come to class, expect to fail. I loved her so much, and she's very caring.
Dr. Young is a phenomenal professor. She allows the student to put forth the effort and let them decide how much they want to grow throughout the semester. She stretches your writing and allows you to improve all the time. I would say if you are looking for an easy A this is not the class. You will have to work for it.
I loved Professor Young! She really helped my writing and had interesting lectures. She's very good about critiquing your papers honestly, but respectfully, and I always agreed with her feedback. She's not a pushover, and this isn't an easy A, but I would say your grade is more based on effort and improvement rather than ability to write.
This class was a lot of fun. I learned a lot about creative writing and we got to do fun exercises that helped a lot. There were a decent amount of readings, but they are all creative writing, and fun. There were also a lot of smaller writing assignments. Just stay caught up on homework and you're golden.
One of the most caring and wonderful professors I have ever had. If you are thinking about becoming a writer please take her class! She will help so much and she genuinely cares.
Sister Young was amazing. She really cares about her students and helping them grow and develop as writers. There is work to be put in, but that is to be expected if you want to learn and grow. That being said, it was manageable and never too much.
Prof. Young's class is demanding, but very rewarding. Her lectures, homework, and in-class activities are engaging and hands-on. Through them you learnt to be a much better writer, because she is a true mentor.
Professor Young was a great mentor! Her feedback on assignments was always clear and helpful, and she helped introduce me to various genres. I actually like poetry now! Her class does require effort, though. There's always an assignment to be done and there's a lot of (helpful) readings. It takes time, but your writing will improve!
I can't recommend Sister Young highly enough! She is accomodating of circumstances and needs, she is more than willing to give feedback (which is both consturctive and encouraging), and she has designed the course to set you up for success. There is a lot of writing practice and reading, but most assignments are participation based. She is great!
Professor Young is the sweetest lady ever! I felt like I learned a lot and I wasn't constantly worried about assignments like in other classes. She gives really good feedback because she takes the time to get to know you and to get to know your writing. I would recommend her to anyone.
Sister Young is an incredible lady! She cared so much about her students and she knows a lot about LDS literature. Her midterm was a little tricky, but she gives study guides that are really helpful. If you are looking for a letters GE, I would highly recommend this one! Would take it from her again.
Best professor I had all semester! Genuinely helpful and so much fun. Can't recommend her enough.
This is for WRTG 316 but I didn't have that option. Not going to lie, the lectures are a little dry when she needs to cover the BYU-required curriculum. However, she does plan the course so that you can succeed. You will need the textbook for a few reading quizzes, but those are not hard. If you want you can show her before submitting it.
Sister Young is super nice, always willing to help, and easy to talk to after or outside of class. Her class is easy to get an A in as long as you actually do the small assignments. She purposefully makes them worth more than the few big assignments so that you can experiment and learn without the pressure.
Sister Young is awesome. She is super caring and is always accessible outside of class. She pushes you to try new things in your writing, and makes things worth enough points to where you can try new things and not have to worry about it affecting your grade! Her feedback is also super helpful. I would recommend her to anyone taking this class.
I loved Sister Young's class! She's really good at exposing students to good literature, good examples of what we would be writing. And she's great at breaking down what a good piece of writing is. I'm a pretty terrible writer, my poetry is non-existant, but I still loved her class. Do yourself a favor and take it with her!
Professor Young is a great Creative Writing professor. She always gave lots of great feedback on all of my projects and pushed me to be a better writer. I would definitely recommend her course to anyone.
Professor Young is amazing. She pushes you to hone your writing skills, and explore new things. The readings are due every class period, but there isn't a lot of reading to do, and it is ALWAYS very helpful for writing things in general. If you don't like getting critiqued on your work, don't take her as she plus your classmates critique your work.
Professor Young's feedback on assignments can sometimes be brutal. She usually gives you full credit for assignments as long as you follow certain guidelines (double-spaced, serif font, etc.), which she'll tell you at the bottom of the assignment description, but will almost always give you plenty of feedback, some of which can be tough.
Professor Young's Creative Writing unit was one of the most enjoyable courses I've taken as an English major. I feel as though I've really improved as a writer, and I'm happy that there was more than just fiction in the genres we chose to study. If I weren't a senior, I'd honestly consider switching tracks due to the class.
She is a very kind, understanding and intelligent professor. You will definitely learn how to become a better writer in this class! There are no big exams-just a couple little quizzes that are easy. The biggest things is making sure you do the readings before each class (there are about 3 ish), and doing the writing (3 different units).
Mrs. Young is amazing! It is so easy to learn with her. She is great at explaining things so learning feels very natural. She is very considerate of the reading material and makes sure it is easily accessible--everything can be found online. We had a few quizzes but she went over what was on them so it wasn't a surprise. Participation matters.
Professor Young made WRTG 316 my favorite non-CS class. There are so many cool projects you get to work on. Make sure you keep track of all the little assignments and due dates so you don't lose any points. Take this class from her!!!
Amazing professor! She helped me a lot when it came to my writing and how to use grammar. She seemed to care about each of us and wanted us to succeed. She has quizzes and assignments that are do before the class time (could change each semester) so make sure you are aware when assignments are due.
Dr. Young really cares about her students. I can attest to this with a quick experience. Two absences are allowed, and I had already used both before learning of a medical school interview that would take place during class. I talked with Dr. Young, and she was very helpful in allowing me to miss another class period so that I could interview.
She was an INCREDIBLE teacher! I appreciated all of her insights and teachings. She was very focused on helping us know everything she has gone through to be a published writer. I became a better writer throughout this class. She gives a lot of feedback--heavier on the critque side than on reinforcement. I would take this class again!
Writing 316 is not an easy class, but is very much required. Dr. Young hands down has to be the best professor to take this from. There is lots to do, but it is organized in a manageable way. Dr. Young is always ready to help if you fall behind. 100% Recommend
Professor Young is not only a great teacher, but more importantly for a Creative Writing class, an exceptional writer. I struggle listening to feedback from my peers or professors that are unable to write well; that was not the case here. Professor Young has a strong understanding of what makes a good story, and I accepted all of her feedback well.
Professor Young is a great teacher. I took this class as an elective and was worried that it would be more intense than I wanted, not being an English major. But I am glad I took this class! I learned a lot about how to better express my ideas and through each of the writing assignments. Her grading criteria is very clear.
Darlene Young is an excellent professor. She is very smart and efficient, and she gives good feedback on projects. She is also respectful and kind. The Creative Writing class is made up of three sections: Poetry, Fiction, and Personal Essay. I learned so much every class period and the readings are at most two hours for every class period.
Prof. Young is pretty nit-picky and will dock you points for little things. At times she can be a little bit condescending when teaching or answering students' questions. That being said she makes the class manageable and although the class will keep you busy, it's never too much to handle.
She does a great job at explaining the concepts of writing various genres. She's a discovery writer, so some of the concepts she teaches lean more towards that, though as a planner myself, I still found it helpful. She also critiques precisely and intensely, but it's very helpful for improving your work.
Professor Young is a really good teacher! She is a tough grader but has very specific rubrics. She gives you lots of resources to succeed in her class. All of the assignments are helpful in the workforce. You need to put in the work, especially in the big literature review assignment, but it's very doable. I would take it from her again!
Professor Young's class will challenge your writing and force you to grow as a writer. You'll have to devote a significant amount of time to reading and writing for her class, but it is worth it. She is a phenomenal instructor.
Professor Young is an amazing professor who understands that most of her WRTG 316 students do not want to write. That's one reason why some STEM majors even choose to go into STEM. So she totally understands. I really enjoyed the class. I will recommend, for the instructions unit, design instructions that she won't have materials to test. Trust.
Professor Young was awesome. She clearly defined what it would take in her class to get a good grade and was very fair. She warns you in advance when you need to start working on things and is gracious in how she orders the class around breaks and such.
Prof Young is amazing! She is extremely clear in her grading and grades strictly by her rubric, so grading doesn't feel subjective at all. She is super willing to help out and wants everyone to do well in her class. She puts a lot of work into organizing her content in the best way possible and it pays off. I would def take her again!
An incredible professor and an incredible writer. She provides harsh (but very helpful and very clear) feedback, and it is obvious that she wants each student to improve. Lectures are engaging and fun. Lots of homework, but it is often enjoyable and her instructions are clear. She does her best to help students learn to love the writing process.
Prof. Young is an amazing creative writing teacher! She gives honest feedback and truly wants each student to improve, which I definitely did thanks to her. She assigns a fair amount of readings, but they're super beneficial and worth the time if you really want to improve your writing. Nice to work with; I highly recommend her.
Professor Young is an amazing writing instructor. Her critiques are valuable, and she's devoted to helping students improve. Unstuck AI was a game-changer for preparing for her class.
She understands the use of AI in our day and age. Honestly, she's a fair grader for an abstract subject such as writing. Highly recommended and suggested.
Sister Young's class was informative and a great introductory/review of creative writing skills. She gives great feedback and is very accommodating. Class attendance is necessary and so is participation with your peers.
Professor Young is great! She gives you clear instructions and good feedback. If you do the work, show up to class, and follow her instructions (on Learning Suite, very clearly written), you'll succeed. She responds quickly to emails and is super willing to meet with you if you need. Great choice for this GE!
This class was disappointing. Professor Young used contract grading this semester, and I hope she doesn't continue it. You can put in a lot of effort, but if your assignment is not perfect, you get a zero or maybe half credit. She also moves on to new assignments before the last ones are due. I wouldn't recommend this professor.
