Really tries to prepare students for the work of broadcasting. A little overboard though possibly. Long weekly assignments.
Hard to understand his assignment directions. Ridiculous amount of work which made an easy class hard. Horrible grading system and doesnt make himself available outside of office hours. Doesnt try to help the students at all. I am NEVER taking him again
There was a fairly unusual amount of work for a 100 level class. Directions were not hard to follow; he just grades harshly if you do not follow them. No tests in class, just turn in the assignments to get a good grade. Does not accept late assignments.
He knows how to make a simple class really difficult. Was my most time consuming class all semester. He makes long assignments during the semester worth small point value, then HUGE final assignments at the end. One PART of the final was 30 commercials
I would advise anyone who plans on taking a Newton class to drop it A.S.A.P.!!!I've never been through a class like his P.R. class. His lectures are very unclear, his grading scale is flawed.Overall the class is very unfair.twoexams;250ptmidterm,500ptfinal
Wow..didnt know this type of class could be so hard! Way too much work, but i have to say i did learn a lot, but would have without the rediculous 10pt assignments. Grading scale is atrocious but he is a nice guy.use to teach at Wisc U, needs to go back.
way too much work for a 100 class! i spent all my time doing work for this class. he expects everything to be flawless. follow directions VERY carefully or you wil find yourself loosing a lot of points! he's not very understanding if you have a problem.
Horrible teacher, goes WAY TO FAST and WILL NOT wait to answer questions. I advise anyone NOT to take his class. He also puts his personal studies WAY TOO MUCH into the class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
I would advise against taking any of his classes. He thinks he is perfect and is not a very understanding professor. His grading system is terrible, and so is his attendence policy. Everytime you miss a class he takes 10 points off your grade.
Hardest Proffesor I Have EVER taken. and I've been to 3 diffrent colleges over my carrer. Overall seems he is very well educated on the topics but he expects the world from his classes and rules with an Iron fist.
He is the HARDEST teacher i have ever had in my life. You have weekly assgnments that basically take up your entire week and he doesnt accept anything late. He grades harshly and gives you 4 long 75 point end of semester projects that make or break you
I WILL SHOT MY SELF IN THE FACE BEFORE I TAKE ANOTHER ONE OF DR. NEWTON CLASSES! By far, and without question, the Hardest professor I have ever taken. I am in a class of 30 students, We have as a class descovered that out of 30 of us only ONE has a B...
Be prepared to do alot of work. Only one person I know of in my class actually FINISHED the final, and when it was brought up with him afterward, his first words were "So what?"
Worst, most unhelpful and unclear teacher I have ever had in my entire school career. He is **** and is not concerned about the progress of students in the class. Will not take any questions during class. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH NEWTON!!!
I have never studied so much as I did for this class.Although Dr. Newtons class was so hard and I hated it while I was in it, I learned allot from him and I am glad he challenged me.He is hard but he is human so if you need help talk to him he will help u
Professor Newton obviously knows his stuff and cares about the students. He always offers to help us out if we have trouble in the class. We have to work hard, but what do u expect? Take his class if you want to learn a lot. Slackers, beware!
Dr. Newton is a very good teacher, he does expect alot, but hey is always willing to help. He is one of the best teachers I have ever had, always happy to see you and if you ever need anything he will help.Be prepared to do your fair share of work!
Dr. Newton is a great professor. People complain there is too much work, but he gives you a schedule for the whole semester with more than enough time to do it, so there are no excuses. He always has time to answer questions, and is a really great guy.
He is a great professor, challenges you to do your best, takes any questions or concerns, helpful, always concerned with how you are doing. People complain that his class is hard but this is college not high school. If you would stop whining and do the work you can get a good grade. Highly Recomended
sometimes it seemed like we did the same assignment over and over again. If you listen carefully and study his examples it's not too bad.
Well I have given him the benefit of the doubt on many occasions, but to anyone going to take him for 490, DONT DO IT!!!! He is not a good teacher, took a great subject and made it dificult.
this class is hard!!! very time consuming so at times it is very difficult to juggle with other classes. grades pretty much all or nothing and expects you to remember everything from the book. do not take this class if u dont have to, if u do have to...that sucks
one word: ahhhh!!!!
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS. Had him for film which i thought was going to be interesting. It was, but his expectations are rediculous. His requirements for papers are also rediculous-7pgs at 10 point font. student cried in the class twice because of difficulty with assignments. Not good with office hours
this teacher with this class is really hard, on the first quiz me and everone around me got 20-30%, the midterm wasnt much better, the only thing that brings your grade up is the 2 papers which arent that bad. but this class sucks.
very bad teacher, no one in the class liked him
Don't listen to these ratings. People who left them were prolly mad because they didn't put in the effort. He's a wonderful teacher and genuinely cares about his students. Yes, there is a lot of work but it's a 300level COLLEGE class. Suck it up and deal with it. Study, pay attention, you'll be fine
Let me break it down for you..Darrel is a good teacher, yes. Knows what he is doing, I hope so. But WAYYYY to hard. Somethings shouldnt be that hard. Don't take him if u have other classes that require some type of work. Take him is you have nothing else going on that semester an can put in hours ap
Dr. Newton is a really nice guy, and an intelligent and talented proffesor, BUT his class is very difficult. The papers are long and the exams and quizes are even harder. Going into a 300 level class with Dr. Newton you must be prepared to do a lot of work for a mediocre grade.
Nice guy for the most part, but a JERK for a teacher. He makes the class hard just because he can. His quizzes are like tests and his test insane! He could make his classes so much more interesting but he wants to be hard on us. Take Moeder! Always take Dr. Moeder!!!!
One guy on here was in our film class complains but did nothing but sleep in class. One girl just tried to be cute. Others expect CMAT classes to be a blow offs. To get good grades from Newton, study and ask questions. I did. He's a good prof but he expects students to work. If you can't handle it go back to community college or get a job at McD's
Dr. Newton genuinely cares about his students. He wants them to succeed in his classes as well as overall and he will do everything necessary to help them do so. In return he expects that they will work hard and take their education as serious as he does. He's tough but there isn't a teacher out there like Dr. Newton. He's the best!
Anyone who trashes Newton is tripping - he tells us what to study, what to read, gives good examples, shows good videos, reviews the exams, tells us where to find the answers in the book and puts aside classtime to ask what we need to succeed. All you whiners - GET OUT OF OUR MAJOR AND GO BACK TO MOMMY!!
Bottom line - don't take Newton if you want an easy prof. He expects you to work hard, but he makes it easy by giving a lot of support. Some students were complaining because he wouldn't let them turn in late work. Grow up. They also expected him to be cute so they would like him. He's there to teach not entertain and he's VERY COOL. I read = A & B
Okay, Newton isnt a bad teacher. He gives you clear, typed directions and doesn't let you slack off (which college professors shouldnt) But, for a 100 class, he assigns too much. The same class w/a diff teacher was doing 1/3 of the work we did and learned the same things. Also, when I had a problem, he wouldnt understand or help me at all. Not a fan
Dr. Newton is one of the best professors that I have ever had. He is very well educated in each subject matter and most importantly cares about each student's education. He takes the time to explain what is expected and loves feedback. Although his class was difficult, at the end it was rewarding to know that you actually learned something.
****ing ****, jerk face man does not like students and doesnt wish to help them, i seriously dislike this man
This class was very hard and required a lot of work, but I did find most of the material intersting and i learned a lot. if you are looking for a BS class or an easy A dont take this class. I worked soo hard in this class and managed a B. The papers werent too bad, but the tests were definatley hard, you have to know every little bit of material
Great teacher, very helpful. If you are looking for an easy class and professor, don't take Newton. But if you want to learn and work hard he makes you feel good about doing so. He is the best professor that I have ever had, and really cares about students that put effort in.
he speaks with a monotone voice so it's easy to dose off during his lectures. very intelligent man. he requires 2 quizzes, midterm and final. all quizzes are taken on webct. nice guy, if you're a mass media track you'll be seeing him alot.
Dr. Newton is the proverbial****. He doews make you work hard but it is not in vain. I have had him for another class and was not sure about him back then. After that I was sure he was a solid professor. I did poorly on exams and still managed a B in the class which shows his understanding of particular student needs and not one aspect.
The book could teach this class and the book is extremely boring. Avoid at all cost. It's better to take the class a semester later.
Avoid taking this guy. Tests are impossible, He'll tell you one thing and do the next. By far the hardest tests Ive had in college. Only reason I took him was that the other classes were full.
Dr. Newton is a great guy, his class is difficult and you MUST READ AND STUDY. He will help you as much as he can and REALLY cares about his students. make papers clear and get proof read. I may not be an ace in the class...but he's still a very good and intellegent teacher
I'm taking his Unreality of Reality TV seminar. He is very nice, but this class is pretty difficult. You have to make sure to read and study. But the class is pretty interesting.
seems like a nice guy. terrible teacher, didn't know the material he was teaching. mispronounced names and just plain fabricated other "facts". do not trust the education you recieve from him. seems nice though.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He read rate my professor and who knows might even review himself. But if you can avoid taking this class. AVOID. Horrible just plain Horrible.
quite possibly the biggest jerk to ever walk the face of the earth. if you take this class you are a moron. very non understanding when you have a problem, very unclear about grading, pretty much just a horrible class, will stress you out to the max.
One of the worst experiences I have ever had. He is as clear as mud and makes mistakes that he'll never own up to. Avoid! Avoid! Grading is difficult and all around just a terrible teacher.
excellent teacher if your serious about school. if not, take something easy and don't waste your time. those who don't like him probably haven't done well in any other classes either
he is helpful and very clear about expectations. he's also respectful, fair about deadlines and a nice guy. he's not one of those profs who sucks up to students just to be liked, but you like him anyway. his tests are hard if you don't study. for serious students only
Expects students to do the readings, think critically & study hard, but if you do you'll be fine. Welcomes student feedback (neg, pos & suggestions for improvement), is very available to answer questions in class or meet individually. You'll be ok if you do lots of research, include your insight in papers & study everything. He's a nice prof!
Worse teacher ever! Never take this class! He is a smart ass and will never help you out at all. By far the worse professor at SU. He doesn't grade fair at all. He makes mistakes and your grade suffers becuase of it!!!!
You have to read the book because thats where he pulls the majority of his questions for tests. Lectures are pretty straight forward. Doesn't word test questions very well but adjusts grades accordingly. Good professor, would take another course with him
If you don't like to read a lot, don't take the class. He does take attendance seriously and that's understandable. Make an attempt to pass the class, read the assigned readings and the powerpoints that he provides online. Take great notes. You will want to record his lectures. Some info we won't have for studying so pay attention in class!
Don't take him if you don't have to. He knows how to make such a fun interesting topic--horrid. quizzes are 75points, midterm 250, and the final 350. These are not easy. He's very partial person and "acts" nice in class. He's also very ****;it comes as time goes by,& he Will act like he is above everyone else! U will be demeaned if forget book 1x
Ok so yea Newton is def a difficult teacher and yes his tests can be hard but he wants you to learn and be successful. If your not in college to earn a degree that one day you can use in real life ..cuz hate to break it to ya but once college is done real life begins.. then what are you doing?
ok no matter what anyone else says, this guy's class is unnecessarily hard. he asks for suggestions from the class to make it easier, but then shoots every idea down. he's a nice guy, but a rediculous teacher. he expects way too much and is so set in his ways that he won't change even if students are failing quizzes constantly. dont take him!
For a 110 class he is hard. uses power point. Students have to sign in to class. has online quizes (75pts) a midterm and a final which is worth 250pts!! so he is nice but a tough teacher.
I worked my ass off in Newton's class, somehow got an A, and it was the most rewarding grade I've ever recieved. This man is incredibly intelligent- I've learned so much that will forever help my career- he makes you utilize your knowledge. Posts thorough, interesting powerpoints. His quizzes are tricky but the 2 papers and final saved me.
Hard teacher. for a 110 class it is too hard. there are 2 online quiz's,a midterm, and a final. the final is cumulative and worth 250pts plus 50 pts bonus. Dont take him.
I learned nothing in this class. He is the most unfair grader - just terrible! every single person in our class was stunned to find out how low their grade was. Most student dropped out after getting to know this CRAZY man. Do not take this class!
You can not afford to make stupid mistakes in Newton's class. All assignments were turned in on Myclasses, so make sure you manage your time well. Ask a lot of questions its the only way to find out what the assignment really is. Very nice character, very tough teacher. doesn't cut slack for anyone.
Dr. Newton is one of my favorite teachers. He's a really nice guy, knows his stuff, and he expects a lot from you. Work hard and it's totally worth it. I plan to take more of his classes.
Newton is crazy smart. The guy has been teaching this stuff for nearly 2 decades. He really cares if his students understand the material. The Exams are insanely hard. Recommend him, just make sure your ready to bust your buttt. I feel like even if I don't get a required C in his class, the amount info i learned was well worth the ulcer that formed
Professor Newton is a horrible old man. He tries to be cool but he is too stuck in his ways to realize that maybe he needs to change and not the students.
You will lose points if you don't proofread your work carefully and make sure you have everything like you're supposed to have it. But that's just the way it is, and if you can proofread, then you can do very well in his class. I liked Newton. Very nice and caring man, respectful, lenient and gives a great handshake. Good man.
Usually a nice guy, but very tough grader. Makes attendance mandatory 100% of the time (not a single freebie). If you follow his directions *perfectly* you'll do fine, otherwise expect a lot of points taken off here and there. Does not accept any late work no matter what. Moderate workload, but some assignments take a really long time.
HARDEST TEACHER EVER! He made me cry and think I was stupid because I failed every test he gave. He is the toughest grader and gives ridiculous assignments. He doesn't help students at all. My class started with 30 kids and by the final, only 4 remained in the class. AVOID HIM!!!!!
This CMAT professor is a waste of time, effort, and sanity. The assignments given are pointless, outdated, and graded to an absurd level. You want to waste your time and your college experience take this fool. His resume is loaded yet he talks about material like it is the 1930s. Outside of class he is unapproachable and acts like he doesn't know you
Great class if you want to learn something. I received an A and I feel it was well deserved. He is a tough grader. Each mistake on the 10point assignments is worth 2 points and on the 80 points assignment it's worth 5. Make sure you proof read your work over and over and over and you should pull out an A. I definitely do not regret taking him.
He started the semester making his course seem all tough and got a bunch of students to drop. But then he became an easier grader. As long as you do your work and stay on top of things, you should earn a good grade in his class. He is typically easy-going, but can be prone to moments of coming across as a bit smug.
Good guy, but serious about his job. Not to be taken if you're looking for an easy A - but you will learn.
First of let me just say that Newton is a great guy, and really knows what hes doing, however he is a very tough grader I had to drop his class because I failed his mid term, if you take this class you have to keep up with all the readings he assigns do that and you will pass I didn't do that and wish I did
Dr. Newton was the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life of being a student. He is rude, stubborn, and you will hate this class. And this is coming from someone who got a B+ in the class. You will fail 14 page papers for a misplaced comma and he likes to change the directions to work online at the last minute and not tell anyone. AVOID
Each class is different. 131 there can be no mistakes. Newton treats his students like employees. Punctuality is key. His upper classes aren't TOO difficult. I've take two in one semester and gotten Bs. You need to follow directions strictly, and apply what he says (even if sometimes you are feeling redundant). He also answes all questions, SO ASK!
I have never in my left a review for any teacher good or bad but after taking this class I felt the need to warn everyone I could about this guy. He is literally the WORST teacher I have had in my life including every level of education. His directions are unclear and he grades EXTREMELY harshly. If I had the space I would write more. AVOID AVOID!!
If I read the reviews before taking this class, I would have never taken it. After numerous semesters at SU, I've never dealt with such an arrogant, egotistic, condescending person in my life. For being a 100 level class, the amount of work & the degree of difficulty is ridiculous. TAKE SOMEONE ELSE AND AVOID THIS MAN AT ALL COSTS!
OK I've NEVER failed a class or even gotten a D, and I'm a double major business senior in my last semester. took his 131 class because I needed extra credits to graduate, and it was the most tedious and ridiculously graded course ive ever taken by far. He takes off a letter grade for EACH ERROR. dont do it, hes terrible. i barely got a D
Newton will tell you on the first day of class he wants everyone to get an A. He will then precede to give you assignments with practically no instructions, tell you the instructions are there when you ask, and then provide you with the correct instructions via email the night before its due once its too late too fix everything you did wrong.
I've never taken a class that makes me feel so dumb before. We turned in an OUTLINE for a GROUP PAPER that we have to write and he told me that we had 'too much information' and that we need to follow directions. Seriously? I hate what he assigns and I regret not dropping this class.
I have never left a review before, but I have never had a worst teacher and felt that others should be warned as well. He does not answer questions for you, and his assignments are all ridiculously hard. He is not helpful in any way. I would avoid taking him at all costs.
I took Dr. Newton for an online winter class. He was specific with what he wanted and didn't give any slack when it came to grading. He did give corrections on what i did wrong. I didn't really have a problem with him until the last four days of the class. He assigned 2 20+ page assignments in these last four days. I regretted taking him.
Professor Newton is a very nice guy. But his teaching skills leave a lot to be desired. While he is there for you if you need help, his directions are unclear at times and his assignments ask for more advanced information than he provides. Overall, if you find yourself needing to take a CMAT131 class, choose a different professor.
Generally all he cares about is correct citing/referencing and the length of your papers/test and quiz answers. He will take off excessive points if what you turn in doesn't meet his vague, confusing directions/expectations. Honestly, I've never had such a huge problem with a professor, he is extremely condescending toward his students.
Worst Professor that I've Ever Had. This professor, and I use that term loosely, certainly uses his tenure to grade excessively harsh, be patronizing to his students, be openly hostile and be so vague in instruction that he is able to take points off whenever he feels like it. My experience was so bad that I considered filing a grievance.
People who trash Newton are usually terrible students. I know people who will blow off class, don't study with our group, fail online quizzes, and still expect to get a B. He is about business and treats us like adults - not kids. He also doesn't try to suck up to us and be our friends. He acts like the professor he is. Nice guy, too.
I've never experienced a teacher like this before. He doesn't care about his students at all. He will fail you and enjoy it. If you want to enjoy and pass cmat 131 then I recommend finding a different teacher to take it with!!!!
I Wish I had read the reviews before taking this teacher because he was not good. For the sake of your gpa do not take this man.
Worst Teacher at Salisbury University. If you have to take him for CMAT, you will fail, just give up before you start, it's not worth your time. Find another college to get this course fulfilled. It's not even fair. If you absolutely have to take him, I'm so sorry. It will be the worst class you take in your college career, and you will cry.
