He will explain any problem to you and is very patient.

found him to be a fair teacher. made getting back into math a smooth transition.
I thought he was an awesome teacher. I hate math more than anything but he took his time and was very clear on his instructions. I would definantly take a class from him again!
Came to class late sometimes, and never notified students before-hand of class cancelations.
very very difficult tests. Not my style
I thought this was the easiest math class I've ever taken. He is very unorganized however but is fair with his grading and gives easy assignments and tests. Hes also really funny. If you can think logically you will pass this class.
Awesome Professor! He taught with great clarity. His personality is lax-- (the guy is from California). But you won't get a bad grade in his class because of any lack on his part. I am very suprised to see any negative comments about him. I took 1010 with him and now will take 1050 with him. I even recommended him to my wife! So there you go.
Darrell is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. This class is super easy even for me who has struggled with math all my life. I would recommend this class to anyone.
Pretty awesome guy. Laid-back style that gives regular take-home quizzes and is very fair on how he grades. Too bad he's not teaching Calc I. I'd definitely take from him again. He'll spend an hour after class if you need to get concept and moves along at the class's pace, not his. Genuine, humble and very approachable. Not a pretentious bone!!!
Good teacher. He is willing to help, patient, will answer questions and spend his own time to go over things with you. He is not at all condesending and he is laid back.
I didn't pass this class despite my efforts to keep up with it. Fast. Difficult to keep up with. Didn't require / grade homework. Only grades upon quiz and final scores. I'll take Math 1080 again so that the consistency will make it easier next time.
He is a good teacher will go at the pace the class wants. I think the math dept. is jacked up. The test dates are set so if he is behind he crams the last few sections into a day. Also antoher teacher writes the tests so you may not be ready for the tests. He is willing to spend extra time, and explains things well.
Excellent instructor. Willing to stay after class for a bit to help (take advantage of that). Takes questions during lecture readily. Quizzes are all take home, but are challenging. Exams are also challenging with a few easy problems sprinkled throughout. Laid back and approachable. Quick to respond to emails. Material is difficult, but learnable.
I definitely would not recommend him as a teacher. He is a nice guy but I personally cannot learn from his teaching style and I love math. His tests are graded very hard. The class in itself is only graded based on a few tests and only slightly on homework. He is good at e-mailing back and answering questions
Awesome teacher he would stay after class and help students. he even would drive up from slc on saturdays to teach study sessions. he is willing to work with you if your willing to do the work. all math classes are hard but they are easier when the teacher works with you like he does.
Overall he is a fairly decent professor. He doesn't cover everything before tests sometimes though. His reviews before tests are pretty bad, you basically have to study on your own. The math class in general is hard, if you can test out of it I stronly recommend doing so, and do not buy a text book in this class..waste of money, never used it once.
Completely disconnected. Could careless about his students. Went super fast and was super confusing. 70% of the class failed and he could care less.
Math tests are all written by the department so it doesn't matter who your teacher is, you will get the same test that everyone else does. Pro. Poore is easy as he can be on grading, especially if he sees that you are attending class and keeping up with the homework. Never used the book. Very clear lectures and takes time to answer questions.
He was a great professor! I enjoyed his class a lot. Did homework online.
I'd say Darrell is really easy. Maybe that's because my math class was the new online stuff where you only need to be in class once a week. He's a very laid back guy which is perfect for kids were math is not your strongest. He gets right to the point. I can't say much about his teaching style or what he does because the comp. teaches
Though he was late a few times, so were most students. While I didn't need too much attention I feel the online presentation allows him to spend more focused time with those that need it. He was very helpful and let us know when we could get him in the campus math hub too. I'll be taking my next math class from him as well.
Very helpful and will show multiple ways to do problems
Professor Poore is a math wiz but doesn?t really know how to teach it well. He spends way too much time writing definitions on the board. He uses Math XL for quizzes which don?t correlate to his hand written exams. The course is way too difficult for the speed that he teaches. He doesn?t help you get an A, he only helps you pass the class.
poore is a great professor.really laid back-one of my favorite professors that i've had.easy tests/quizzes, clear teaching style, helpful, etc.really understands if math is not your forte.math 1050 is hard cuz its the last math class most majors need to take & weber wants everyone to fail it.lol.poore made it a breeze.
Great professor. Very cool. Helpful and smart. He's young so he's easier to relate to. Quizes based on the homework. Homework NOT required (just helps with quizes) and tests weren't excessively hard. only downside was having class 5 days a week.
He has a really cool personality. He gives you HW but are not required but he does the quizzes from one of the problems of the HW so its better to do it. Test are not hard you just have to study alot and know what you are doing.
I absolutely hate math and I struggle horribly with it. Especially at Weber since its basically online. Professor Poore does his best to make sure you understand what you are doing and really wants you to pass. He gives you times when he can meet after class and when he will be in the HUB. He is fun and smart and I would choose him over the others.
Professor Poore is the only math teacher I've had at Weber State who acted like he wants his students to pass and that he's not superior. He's very personable and approachable if you need help. I would recommend him to anyone.
Great Professor! He really is willing to help his students and understands what we go through. His recommended homework is optional but his take home assignments are a must. Tests were easy and you just had to know your material. Great to even come in the solution center and help his students after class! Great class.
Very Helpful teacher. He is willing to help students learn. He has a variety of ways to teach math. Great guy.
The class was easy especial for someone who knows math... You need to be able to teach yourself. His instructing methods was based on that you have heard it all before. It's not that I hate math but this professor was the worst I've ever had.
Mr. Poore never responded to several emails. Basically, you teach yourself the math from the online textbook. I am not good at math so I struggled a little. Make use of the tutors available, they help alot.
very helpful teacher wants you to do well
HE IS A VERY HELPFUL TEACHER. HE MAKES SURE THAT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS. HE IS VERY WILLING TO ANSWER QUESTIONS DURING CLASS AND AFTER CLASS. HE MAKES IT EASY TO GET A HOLD OF HIM. STUDY FOR EXAMS AND FINAL. HE IS VERY NICE AND YOU CAN TELL HE REALLY UNDERSTANDS WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. HE MAKES THINGS VERY SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND!
Prof. Poore is an awesome teacher. He explains things very well and knows what you asking before you finish asking it. 9 take home assignments, 3 tests, 1 final. I did zero homework from the book and I passed just fine but that worked for me not everyone. He looks like a student and knows how students think and struggle. Great guy.
Exceptional teacher. This was the first time he'd taught Calculus in a while, so we didn't get through everything we were supposed to. Nevertheless, he was very clear and willing to work with students outside of class when needed. He doesn't require you to do work in the book, but you'd be wise to do so anyway, especially if math isn't your thing.
It is a really hard class the second you get in that class you need to get to work there is so much to cover in that class and so little time.
I transferred into this class late it was a very difficult class and I had to work around the clock to pass.
Great instructor but all he does is lecture and not really explain anything. Does not go over tests but has huge exams due each week that have nothing to do with what was learned. His tests are hard (only about 10 questions) but he takes off points for everything. He's really good if you visit him in his office hours.
He worked with me and opened the tests to unlimited tries when I asked. He was great! I had no issues.
Super nice and willing to help you with anything you need
He's a great teacher and is there to help. If you come to class, do the homework, go to the HUB, understand the material, and review for tests you should do fine in the class and get an A.
Overall, he communicated well via email and remained patient through questions. Math is math, and I personally don't care a whole lot for it which may be why I struggled so bad with the tests. I think the notes portion (15%) of the grade is really dumb.
I took this class online. I thought Darrell Poore was a great teacher! He always responded quickly to any questions I emailed him and was very helpful when I had problems. I would definitely take another math class from him.
Professor Poore is an amazing Math teacher!! I am so glad I took math 1010 with him. I really struggle with math, but he made concepts very clear and would go over things as much as students needed. He was always available to help, and was easy to understand. His teaching method is very understandable for the average math joe. Thanks Pr. Poore!
I had Professor Poore for online math, I did 990 and 1010 in the same semester. He was absolutely horrible. He took weeks to responded to my emails. In order to get in touch with him I had to track him down on campus and corner him. He clearly didn't care at all about my success in the classes-- but thankfully I managed to succeed on my own.
Poore is a great guy but, I took 1080 with him and he would not explain the material well at all. He went through things really fast and would make mistakes on his own math and was hard to keep up. He's tests are supper hard and word problems way different then in the book. He likes to make "Gotcha Problems".
I took this class online. I had questions and asked him to open assignments early so I could move forward since I wasn't able to get to the testing centers before due dates. It took him THREE WEEKS to get back to me once which is unacceptable for an online class. I ended up failing the class because he wasn't very helpful.
I liked him. He would show example problems which helped a lot. The first half the semester was tough, though it got easier as the semester went on. I would highly recommend doing the suggest homework problems he gives out.
Dr. Poore doesn't typically teach stats and he didn't require us to memorize all of the really difficult and abstract equations. He gave a bit of homework but was available for help if needed. Even though we were behind most of the semester, we still managed to learn everything without cramming.
Darrell is one of the most understanding professors I've had in college so far. He's easy going, but show up for class so you don't fall behind. Really great guy.
I took this class online and it was very difficult for me. Darrell was very understanding and helped me when he could. He was very busy but answered my emails in a timely manner and would give me extra time and tries on the quizzes and tests. I would definately take him again if I had to retake 0950 or 0990 (which I won't have to). Kinda cute too..
He's kinda flaky, but fair.
He will work with you and wants people to learn the material, he makes calculus as humorous as possible. I took the course over the summer, life happened and I was forced to audit. He is a phenomenal math professor, if you want to actually learn calculus take him.
Challenging subject, but he was always willing to help. Loved his chill attitude. Nice guy.
He is the worst teacher I had this semester related to communication. I missed one quiz and fell so behind because he wouldn't answer my emails. He cancelled class quite often and said he was too sick to show up to class or even answer emails.
Flipped class, homework in class. Very easy to keep up with the corse work. Tests and quizzes aren't that hard if you did the homework. The textbook is online! He's a nice dude. You can take quizzes and tests late.
Professor Poore is a great! You really have to do the work but he gives you a lot of opportunities to get help. Doing the homework helped a lot and then I did fine on the tests because I asked for help when I didn't get what was going on in the tests.
Calc 2 is hard in general, but the speed at which he goes is so hard to keep up. I got an A in Calc 1, but Calc 2 I struggled from the start. So many assignments, so many things to memorize, and he grades pretty harshly, so make sure you write everything correctly or you're screwed. Exams are very difficult so be aware and study more than you think
I thought Darrell was a good professor. It's obvious that he understands the subject very well. He explains things well in class and is always willing to answer questions. He does, however, give problems on the tests and homework that will make you think beyond the basic concepts. The final is worth a third of your grade. So study up......
Great professor. He is very caring, and will help you understand the material with patience.
He takes plenty of time to make sure you understand what he is saying. If you are struggling with a question, he is available in his office to clarify any confusion. However, he did not stick to the schedule and we did not have a ton of notice before any of the chapter tests. But I would very highly recommend this professor.
Really hard to understand during a lecture, he always goes off track from the point, and drags out one subject way too long. Overall, he's a nice professor but his teaching style wasn't the best (as a person who struggles with math, and did all the work on time, I struggled)
One of the best math teachers I have ever had. If i was ever confused on a subject, he would stay after class and step by step re-teach it. I'm very poor at math and he explained it in a very understandable and coherent way. If you pay attention everything should be easy.
Literally the best math professor I've ever had! He works through the problems on the board and as long as you copy what he writes, you'll definitely learn the math. He answers any and all questions in class. If you have further questions after class, just go to his office and he'll help you out! Awesome professor!
He does a really good job of explaining things well for those who struggle with math but also keeping those more adept engaged. Do NOT expect something you turned in today on canvas tonight, it will get there just not quickly. His hand writing is sloppy but if you're slightly paying attention it shouldn't be a problem. Great guy I totally recommend
Prof. Poore was incredible, by far one of my favorite professors! He explains everything thoroughly and clearly and if you still need extra help he's more than willing to help. He's really goofy and caring and he WANTS you to pass! There is homework everyday but it's really helpful for quizzes and exams. recommend him!
Darrel is interesting. One of the coolest guys you will meet. Took three classes with him. 1010 and below he is great. 1080 however, he is a different animal. Classwork, and tests only look vaguely similar. VERY HARD TESTS. He also is a brutal grader. He doesnt curve generally and wont give extra credit. But he will help you after class.
Darrell does a good job lecturing and teaching the material, he also does a good job helping students and answering questions before a test, however he can be very difficult to get a hold of outside of class but otherwise is pretty lenient and will sometimes change your grade on test if he sees you made a dumb mistake on a question.
I took his online class while this class is mainly just through Math Labs Plus he was fast at responding to my emails and would fix my dumb mistakes on quizzes. He was also very understanding and helped us out during this pandemic. I recommend him!
Considering I took this during the pandemic where no in-person instruction or tutoring was given, I'd say he's a good professor. He always responded to emails in a timely manner and kept the class informed on any changes. He was limited in how he could help, but I wish he would've done weekly lessons or tutorials as I had to teach myself.
Semester started off really rough with everything virtual. I've had to teach myself a lot through the textbook and youtube videos. And he takes forever to get grades back to you. But he does want to help and has gotten better throughout the semester.
Professor Poore is an excellent math teacher. Super helpful and always wants the best for his students. You have homework every week but he is very organized and understanding.
Darrel was one of the nicest math teachers I have ever had and when I had troubles on math homework he would respond by email very fast. He was a little off the planned schedule but it was the first semester doing all online due to Covid-19. Overall great math teacher.
He was so unorganized and it was tough to learn through the zoom classes it got better at the end as he got a hold of how to run the class room
I took this class as a virtual course, and I had an awful experience. The zoom meetings are very difficult to get much out of and the grades are almost entirely based on the 2-3 hour exams that are taken in the testing center. I passed this class using Khan Academy, which I recomend to any students taking difficult math classes.
Mr Poore is one of the best professors I've had, but the Math 1080 class is so hard. I would recommend taking 1050 AND 1060 as the Calculus prerequisites unless you've already taken years of precalc and upper algebra. The class is very difficult. I'm just glad I had Mr Poore instead of someone else otherwise there's no way I would make it through.
If youre like me and youre a complete dunce at math then I would highly recommend getting into any of Poores math courses. Hes super patient and will keep working with you until you grasp whatever formula youre struggling with. After I passed his 990 course, I would come back to his office for help on my 1010 and my 1030 homework.
Avoid at all costs. So much homework. He expects 12-15 hours of work per week to get the work done for class. I find myself spending that much just on the learning, that doesn't include studying or online quizzes or tests - and I'm pretty decent at math. This class has an absolutely insane amount of work, and you learn way too much.
Will artificially fail you. Very vague about what makes up your final grade. I got above average on all my tests and got full credit on the homework, and still got a D+. He makes the tests so unnecessarily hard that the average is usually between 50-60 % and he doesn't curve at all. The average score on the final was 34%. Also wont respond to email
Maybe it was just the online portion of learning that made this class difficult for me but I work full time and took the online class so I could take the tests online at home. He made it so you had to go out to a testing center and you had to get a certain score on all the tests to be able to move forward in the class. Basically teaching yourself.
I took Math 1080 from Professor Poore, in 2019, and he's one of the best math professors that I've had. Pretty much every time I dropped by his office, he would help me out with whatever, even if he didn't have office hours at the time. If you stay on top of the homework, you'll do fine. It's a shame he doesn't teach higher division math courses.
where to begin, PLEASE AVOID THIS PROFESSOR. completely all over the place in lectures and constantly saying i think and something like that i guess. grading system doesnt makes sense and doesnt answer emails. completely destroyed my gpa when ive already taken portions of calc in highschool. look elsewhere for math professors.
Math 1010 is a tough class. However, Poore is super understanding and laid back. He works super well with you. Even though its a hard class he helps you make it through and pass
Darrell was a great professor. He was fair on grading and truly taught to prepare us for calculus. There are occasional extra credit problems and he is really great to respond quickly. Assignments can be turned in class or on Canvas, but he is quicker at grading if turned in on class. Definitely recommend him!
This class was a joke. You teach yourself everything and are expected to spend 10-20 hours a week teaching yourself and doing the homework. You cannot move forward in the class unless you have a certain score on the hw and tests. Teacher wasn't bad, but Webers math program is awful. Prepare for lots of time toward this class.
Math 1080 is a very difficult class. Be prepared for that going in. But Darrell Poore is easily the best math professor at Weber. He gives you the sense that he cares about your success, and his feedback on assignments is the sole reason I passed this class. He cares and is compassionate when he knows that you're struggling. Take his class.
Darrell Poore is an amazing instructor!! He will go out of his way to make sure you are truly understanding the information and he is very fair when it comes to grading. I recommend going to class because the homework and tests are based on what he teaches in class!
Amazing professor who would try to explain things until everyone understood. Cared about you if you cared about the class and was just a really fun teacher to learn from. One of the best math teachers i've ever had. If you struggle with math, take him!
He lets you retake tests as many times as needed before the deadline. There is hours of homework every night and you will teach yourself throughout the entire course. He does allow you to set up zoom calls to go over things if you need help. I barely scraped by while giving this class my everything.
Very well structured class. There is A LOT of homework but it really does prepare you for the tests. I never had to reach out to him except for when the online text book went down and he responded in a timely manner. The online textbook was the best part of this class for sure, walks you through problems step by step if you are struggling.
You literally teach yourself EVERYTHING in this course! I've never struggled so much in a math class. I feel like in order to understand everything I'd have to meet with him outside of class daily. I know I will never be taking one of his classes ever again. Also- there's SOOOO much homework. Prepare to have no life outside of this class, haha.
Super chill and a fun teacher to have.
I transferred into this class late in the semester and I emailed him many times about how the course worked, he never got back to me so I have been struggling trying to figure it out. He never sends out reminders, you teach yourself everything, and all of the work is through a third party, not canvas. Going to have to retake with another professor!
Professor Poore was a great teacher and I would take his class again. You have multiple attempts for each test and quizzes. There is a lot of homework in this class and you need to set aside 2 hours a day to do this homework almost every day or you will fall behind. DO NOT FALL BEHIND, you will have a very difficult time recovering.
Unless you have ample amounts of time to go above and beyond, his class is just a headache because the grading is a mess. The final project is encompassing of what you learn but he doesn't want to read through your paper, so he gives his best guess that your paper is missing something and tells you to figure it out because he "doesn't know".
If you study hard you will pass, no recorded lectures, only guided notes. Professor Poore responds quickly to emails and is very willing to give more attempts on quizzes/tests and help with concepts you struggle with. I spent 2-3 hours a day on this class. Guided notes will be around $60 at bookstore and are required, or you can print them out.
Prof. Poore was fantastic. While most of your grade does depend on exams, there was no single instance where he gave an exam problem that was not discussed clearly in class. He wants you to succeed. He makes lectures totally understandable and has been my favorite math professor yet. Highly recommended. (Textbooks are optional and unnecessary)
I don't know how this guy has a 4 out of 5 score. He really sets you up for failure with his 37 page notes homework assignment with a no late work policy every single week. Sometimes two in one week. If you don't prioritize only his class you just might fail. Most of us don't just take one class at a time. I can't wait until the semester is over.
Professor Poore is a great instructor, he does lecture heavy and moves fast, but has no problem stopping/ slowing down if you need help/clarification, he puts the effort in to make his lectures interesting and fun to sit through. I wouldn't have passed any of my math without his help. He does not set you up to fail, it is most indeed the opposite.
Super heavy workload, uses third party websites for assignments and doesn't upload onto the canvas calendar or grades. I took the class online so as not to commute to campus, but you must take most quizzes and tests in the testing centers which was a pain. He was also not good at emailing me back or communicating with me.
If you are taking an math 1010 online, take is from Professor Po
I am not very good at math but Professor Poore was truly amazing. He had great communication throughout the entire course by sending weekly emails. He also responded very quickly to emails. I feel like he understands math is not everybody's best subject and was willing to work with you to get the most out of class. Bottom line is take his class!
very homework heavy for no reason other than to make life harder. the homework makes it difficult to enjoy math or learn anything because you're too busy watching his harsh deadlines. glad this is over. I would not recommend him. take anyone else for math but him.
Very easy going and made Math 1080 easier to get through. I would take him again if I could!
This class could be structured better.
The best and now my fav prof! Made precalc somewhat easy?! Really cares about personal understanding and always willing to answer Qs, and rly good at it. Although his lectures are the greatest. Really generous, forgiving grader with no docked pts for late assignments. Purposely makes exams easier than assignments. Loves math and his humor is peak.
If you have other classes or any hobbies outside of math, don't take this class. Twice the amount of homework than is necessary, just to have 70% of the grade go to tests. Absolutely ridiculous homework load. 36 hours of doing problems in the last 3 days. If you want to feel like you're fighting for a doctorate in basic math then go ahead.
I took this class online to avoid going to campus but you have to go to the testing center for every test and a few quizzes. I had zero communication with the professor the entire semester and learned everything on my own. There is an insane homework load for a math 1010 class and the deadlines are very strict. I would avoid this class if you can.
Do EVERYTHING you can, NOT to take this class. You will spend an absurd amount of time doing homework. study modules, online assignments, journals, quizzes and tests. all 4 of my other classes combined do not have as much homework as this one. It is awful. I'm writing my review before my final grade to help save someone from the same misery.
Do everything you can to NOT take this class. It is so heavy homework. My 4 other classes combined do not have as much homework as this one. Also prepare to spend at minimum 20 hours a week to pass. It is absolutely ridiculous. I am writing this review before my final grade to save you from the misery I experienced. DONT DO IT
I took math 1080 with him and half of the class didn't pass the class because the exams were so difficult. It was very common for the exams to have content not discussed very much in class. The final had no study guide making it extremely difficult to know what to study for and the questions were also much more difficult than the ones taught.
Worst class I've ever taken, it drained the life out of me. Very fast paced, deadlines are unclear, and professor took nearly a week to respond to emails. I spent at least 20 hours a week on just lectures and homework. Not to mention that the exams have to be taken at a testing center, which defeats the whole purpose of it being an online class.
Prof. Poore was late to class most of the time and did not show a lot of care for his class. He goes over material very fast and talks as if we already know how to solve it. Sometimes he would just say "pick random numbers and keep going until the equation is true". He was willing to work with you on your grade though.
Tough class, but Professor Poore is great - his lectures are engaging and he's happy to clarify things. The heavy workload can be a challenge, but using unstuck study and the free textbook helped me stay on top of it.
Exams were difficult, but not unreasonably so. Lots of homework, but Professor Poore is willing to work with you if you have to turn something in late. He obviously loves math, and his lectures were engaging.
Prof Poore was great! He not only taught how to do the math, but WHY we do it. He was always available to help outside of class to explain in another way to help you understand. The course has a LOT to cover, and it's not all easy, but there are warnings when registering for the class. Prof Poore made this class possible for me!
It felt like a punishment for not taking the ALEKS test. I'll keep it short. If you have any other hobbies, or even courses for the semester you're taking this course, forget about them. It's a 4 credit class but it feels like it should be worth more. Here's some math: Insane workload + strict deadlines = formula for extreme sadness. Take the ALEKS
350 characters is not near enough to trash on this course. Having to go to a testing center every week kinda defeats the point of an online class. Bottom line, do everything you can not to take this course, no exceptions. what a miserable course.
Incredibly boring. frequently did not show up to class.
There was a lot of homework for this class, at least one assignment every night excluding weekends, however Professor Poore was easy to work with, I went through a lot last semester and he was very willing to work with me on improving my grade even when I was unable to take tests.
