Darren's a nice guy, not your typical prof, laid back, relaxed, almost seems like he could be a student. I believe this year is his first as a teacher, his quizes are easy if you study, no midterm, marks papers relatively easily, no difficult to get around 80% haven't written the final yet.
Darren sucks as a teacher, he doesn't lecture and most of the tests are so vague that its not even worth taking. Wish I never took this course, and if you have him as a teacher, think about taking Eric, Bev or any of the other teachers within the MACS department since they are way better.
I personally learned more than I thought I might in this class. Darren didn't drone on for hours but made the points and then we would would reinforce the lectures with games and exercises. I guess he could be clearer but I only had to ask for guidance to get more help.
Darren is a great instructor, and he loves SLAYER! It's not a hard course, and he does a good job with it.
He is a great prof! He is able to make the material very simple and easy to understand. His assignments can be a challange but his tests are not too difficult. You will learn a lot from his class and he will relate the material to everyday life, so you actually leave knowing more than you did before
Darren is the best prof I've had so far at UCFV. He is very approachable and really knows his stuff. If you email him he will get back to you asap, and help you the best he can.The final is really easy if you've payed any attention at all during the semester. All in all a great guy.take the class!
Darren's a good guy. Sometimes he expects a lot and he can be kind of picky with what you write about, but overall he makes things interesting. He's kind of eccentric (he likes metal, the Simpsons, and doesn't believe in the moon landing), but makes the lessons and course material fun (well, kind of) and easy to understand.
My favorite professor ever! He takes a banal idea like modernization theory and makes it interesting and entertaining. He's very helpful and approachable. As for the "fun" HOT topic, I honestly find him sexy, smart, and funny, and very, VERY HOT!
Darren is an awesome teacher. Class is always fun and interesting. I would reccomend you take a class with him!
Darren was an awesome teacher! He makes every topic relatable and interesting. The one thing that I didn't like were the tests. Not that they were hard but that they weren't put together very well. The questions were sometimes hard to understand. Other than that, I would definately recommend that you take one of his classes!
Explains everything well, very helpful. You will have to massage a random person that you've never met on the first or second day of class but the class itself is really fun! Just don't leave you journal entrys and sence journals for last minute or else it will backfire on you!
I thought he was a student at first! He still dresses and behaves like one. It makes for a relaxed non threatening environment, but perhaps a little on the unprofessional side (undecided). I enjoyed his class. He teaching style is refreshing. Does poke and prod about doing readings and may do some pop quizzes (yikes!) He's very down to earth.
Heard all the hype and despite being fairly energetic and into pop culture, his teaching style is unorganized and confusing. We never knew what to expect week to week. Long hard to read PDF's over and over. Lots of movie watching, but little substance.
nice guy
Loved it. It was really theory heavy but Darren makes sure we get it. We ran out of time a lot and perhaps didn't get to cover everything we needed, but all you needed to do was ask. It was all there in the readings. It was provocative and I would take it again!
Don't believe the hype. Great personality but that's about it. Boring and confusing lectures. I wish I never took the class. Take Katherine instead.
He is an excellent teacher. He makes classes very interesting and easy to understand, his textbook is really easy to read and comes with a helpful online guide. It's very easy to pass this class with a good mark. Tests are not too hard but do require some time to study for. overall, excellent, very engaging.
One of may favourite profs! His classes are really interesting.
Darren is the best prof I have had at UFV by a large margin. His lectures bring the academic concepts of the text to relevant, real life discussions and examples. His personal style is casual but his teaching style demands focus and attention. Keep up on your readings and journals or it can come back to haunt you in a pop quiz or discussion.
darren is really clear, and it is fun to be in his class. he made me want to do my major in sociology! whenever i see his name on a class, i immediately work my schedule so i can be in it! he is very flexible when it comes to writing exams/papers if you are sick, and teaches right from the text. do your readings and you'll be fine!
I actually took two classes just thinking it will be boring classes, but he actually got me involved and interested. Now, because of his teaching I found passion in certain aspects of my school work.
I really enjoyed this class. I found Darren's teaching style to be relevant, engaging and informative. Students were engaged and he is very helpful and approachable. He is humourous and easy going, but take his assignments and pop quizzes seriously. He is a fair very fair marker and spells out exactly what he is looking for.
Great prof, lots of fun and keeps class interesting. Really knows his stuff. Plus, he has an awesome beard.
Best instructor ever! Knowlegable, entertaining, clear, and makes you want to know more! I have never had an instructor as great as him! He is also an extremely fair marker, and honest! Take one of his classes if you ever get a chance!
Great prof! Defiantly one of the best/most interesting profs I've ever had.His classes are really interesting and he's got a great sense of humor. He teaches straight from the text, and is very helpful when it comes to getting extra help with papers and assignments.
Awesome prof. He's really flexible and understanding when it comes to asking for help/extensions on assignments and his classes are really fun. He teaches from the text and does a good job of it, he's clear and concise, funny and has a kick ass goatee to boot!
He's without a doubt one of the best teachers at the school. He doesn't cater to the idiots in class and bore everyone else, but he's also not too hard. He's a fair marker (leaning towards the easy side), and he doesn't assign ridiculous amounts of homework. This was my 4th course with him and it won't be the last!
So much fun!!!!!! Darren FTW.
Pretty good prof.
Has the unique ability of getting The prevelant course information across in a way that makes you feel like you are not even learning. Very enjoyable class environment.
OMG darren made this class so much fun. He's super easy to talk to and very funny! As long as you get involved and are positive you'll do great! Attendance is easy becase its a class you look forward to going to. DONT BUY THE TXTBOOK. There is 1 quiz on it worth 5% and he prints off the info you need to know anyways. He is amazing! Take his class!!
Darren is not clear with his expectations and is unwilling to help his students. Asking him for clarification will lead him to tell you that he doesn't want to infringe on your artistic interpretation of your work. His marking is harsh and specific, although his expectations are not clear. I would avoid him at all costs.
Darren is a super likable, funny guy. If you pay attention in class and make an effort you'll get an easy A. I took this class as a last minute elective and it turned out to be really interesting. Darren is fantastic.
Darren is very passionate about what he teaches and knows it from inside out. His classes are usually pretty interesting and he has a great sense of humor. Always available outside class when needed. On the other hand he isn't very clear with his expectations and marks VERY hard. Be ready to do the required readings from the horribly boring text.
Super nice guy. Excpects you to work for your grades but that seems fair I mean, it is university, right? Totally would take another class.
It is only my second year at school but Darren is easily the most helpful prof I've ever had. He goes out of his way to make sure that we understand and have the tools we need to do good. He even comes in on Saturdays to let us use labs and get extra help. I love media classes with Darren and Eric.
Darren is a professor who cares about his students and fosters an encouraging learning environment. As a professor who wants to do well, he expects the same from his students. Do the readings, ask for help and be the student you're supposed to be and you'll without a doubt walk away learning a lot. If you don't do well in his class, that's on you.
Great prof! Text book readings should be done to be successful on the tests. He is always great to listen to and I couldnt wait to go to class. Everything he says could be used to test so notes and class attendee is a must! But I can't imagine why anyone would want to miss his class!
Darren is an awesome teacher, he makes everything really fun to learn about and makes you want to come to class. He's really funny and wants everyone to succeed. The work is fairly easy and he is quite the fair marker. I would recommend him 100%
When you are eager to go to class, regardless of the time, it's bound to be because the professor makes class interesting. Darren is enthusiastic about the subject matter and is absolutely hilarious. Although there is not an attendance requirement, everything in the lectures can be addressed in exams. However,3 hour classes = not bad whatsoever
Darren has easily become my favourite prof ever! He is hilarious and always finds a way to make the lesson fun. His knowledge of the course content is so thorough that you can easily pass just by taking notes on his lectures. Attendance is not mandatory, but you will find yourself making a strong effort to be there every week.
The text book should be used as an instrument of tortureit is honestly the worst textbook I have ever read. Darren however explains it very well, and somehow makes it interesting. He engages with students, and makes you want to contribute. I looked forward to going to every class because I always left with something new to think about.
Darren overall is a great professor: friendly, approachable, funny and very passionate and interested in the subject matter. He encourages students, is happy to help them, as long as its at a time best for him -_- Takes a long time to get projects/marks back, is a busy guy but seems a little lazy
Darren is the best He cares so much about his students, gives great feedback and will help if you ask. He is so passionate that his lectures are always worthwhile. I will take all of his classes I can get. He expects you to work for your grade but show up, participate and do the papers and you will be fine. Taste and Culture is my fav so far.
I thought Darren was a good prof and made some of the course content interesting, he expects a higher level of quality in work even though its just a first year course.
Disorganised class and hard marker
Darren was really great! He made the class fun and entertaining, and taught the material well. He's really clear with his expectations and assignments, and really cares about the topics. He's super engaging and passionate about what he does. The class was easy and organized well.
As an ESL student with learning disability, It is extremely difficult to understand the course content. Darren took the time in his office hours to explain the concepts. His lectures were exciting and well prepared course work. Highly recommend this professor.
Darren is relaxed, laid-back, and has a great sense of humour, but he uses those traits to improve the classroom experience, rather than letting them detract from it. His classes are the kind you can look forward to, and while the workload/readings aren't a cakewalk, he gives good feedback and is clearly very knowledgeable on the stuff he teaches.
Loved Darren! Just know that this class is textbook heavy. You really need to read the text thoroughly and be able to completely understand what is being said each week. He also throws in pop quizzes which are in relation to lectures and readings. However, I wouldn't say it was challenging unless you really put full effort! I highly recommend him!
Nice and chill prof. Assignment criteria not clear, he's not specific as he wants students to be creative. Multiple Group projects. Lectures don't correspond to book, no midterm but final exam will be difficult to study for unless you ask for a study guide. Study guide not helpful. Read the textbook it may save your grade. Can sleep during movies.
Darren is a great guy and can be funny sometimes. However, Darren is not a great teacher, he was not clear on what his expectations were for assignments and is a really tough marker!
Best professor I had thus far. I really enjoyed his lectures and his personality comes through his teaching. He respects students who put an honest effort in the course. He rewards students who are diligent. His exams are textbook and lecture based. Read & listen is all one has to do to do well.
Darren is such a wonderful person and this really translates into is teaching! He cares about his students and is very accessible for extra help. The course requires a lot of reading but it is all relevant and explained thoroughly in class as well. Would definitely take another class with Darren again!
Course load is too heavy. A 365 page book with a review in first 3 weeks in addition to the 100 pages of readings each week. Class had no structure. He marks too hard and has really high expectations, but never tells you what he wants. He sets you up to fail.
Darren is a really good prof. He engages well with the class and loves to talk and explain thoroughly with examples. He can go on for too long but his PowerPoint notes are amazingly well done and can prepare you well for the exams if youre aiming for a B- If you take his class just make sure to read and go over his notes so youre up to date.
Darren is one of the best profs I have ever had. His passion for the subject matter is obvious, and is all around a friendly guy. A lot is taken from the textbook, but it's not a lot of reading usually, and the assignments were surprisingly easy. Rather than a few large assignments, it was a very small one every week. Highly recommend for SOC 101.
Enjoyed the class. Lectures had content made lighter by fun and hilariousness. During tough times, he works hard to make the student's job easier. The tests are fairly difficult, not too easy or too hard. Would recommend his classes for sure!
Darren is a caring and compassionate professor! His lectures are interesting and he often incorporates videos to complement the topic. He isnt an easy grader, however, I found his grading to be fair and his feedback was useful! Overall, just a great person!
Darren is one of the best professors and mentors I have had during my undergrad. He is so passionate about what he teaches and puts time into making the content fun and engaging for his students. He is flexible and does everything he can to help you succeed. If you have a chance, take a class with Darren!
Very enjoyable class with quite interesting material. Darren makes the classes fun with his humour, but in my opinion, there is not much instruction on how to do certain things. He is a tough, but fair grader, so if you study and take your time on the assignments (unlike me) you will do fine.
Darren was an awesome online prof. He posts lectures weekly and always communicates if they will be up late. Projects were simple and well explained, he even changed the course schedule to give us a week free to catch up on his or any other courses. He was funny and well organized would definitely recommend his class.
He gives great lectures and makes it fun but he grades pretty tough for the lack of guidance he provides. It was a true 3rd year class and I just didn't feel like I could apply what he teaches well. Also the paper was a bit too heavy of an assignment. wish we were graded on more things.
Hard grader
very entertaining lectures but still quite informative. limited number of assignments but most are writing assignments, though the final 2 have creative options. content was interesting and engaging.
Long but informative lectures - though sometimes it felt like he was just reading the textbook (which you definitely need). Online, it's hard to stay engaged, but he did a decent job. Clear assignment criteria. Nice beard.
Very understanding of the mental toll covid has had on his students. He's funny, and makes class about as interesting as it can be in an online environment. Definitely made me feel interested in the subject, would take again any time.
Very long lectures, Will not give you the PowerPoints separately. One week of reading was a minimum of 70 pages. Takes forever to grade papers (Over a month). While he seems to be a nice and caring professor, I definitely wouldn't take another class with him. Gives 2 business days to complete discussion posts.
worst professor ever
I am waiting for my results my winter 2022 classes started but he didn't marked students fall 2021 work and all the students are waiting for their results .
few assignments, heavy reading every week, and moderately tough grading. lectures are super interesting and darren is hilarious. very understanding and caring. i found assignment criteria to be clear, and examples of previous assignments were given. if you put in a lot of effort and stay on top of readings, you will love this class!
Take a class with him if you want to wait 2 months to get any grades back and read 50 pages per week of the driest material possible plus watch an hour long lecture. Then have fun doing discussion posts equivalent to short essays and on top of that complete papers and confusing quizzes. And dont forget to reply to 2 discussion posts like we care!
This is one professor which I dont think I never gonna take his course in future. He is one of the bad professor. He never give you marks on what you write. If you gonna take him get ready for your GPA go down. I am getting one and only B- grade in my whole transcript because him. All the best for his course if you seeing after taking him.
Worst prof I've ever come across. Never grades anything so you never actually learn and improve. Oh and he always has an excuse for why he doesn't grade. Designs tests to be failed through tight time limits with long/confusing/irrelevant questions. Be prepared to teach yourself everything through 50 page readings per week! Avoid at all cost
This is the worst than worst. he never grades for anything. always excuse and said plagiarism if you write in your own words. never ever take him. After reading this please Darren leave the University.
Much like any MACS class there's a lot of material and it's not always interesting. He might spend more time on his green screen announcement videos than marking, but at least he has some personality.
I enjoyed this class! The remix assignment was really fun. Chapter a week, 3 little assignments, 2 big, and 1 exam. Put in the effort and you'll get a good grade. Darren is very understanding and creative, to say the least. Lectures are a bit long, but they're interesting. Offers 1 free extension for any assignment and participation matters :)
Got plagrised and he didnt even discussed with me about that and marked 0 and also sent my assignment to UFV Academic Integrity Matter. Also, MACS210 course was hard.
Rarely gave feedback for assignments and was unable to see grades on last few assignments. 15 quiz questions in 12 minutes, most of which did not accurately reflect course content. Spent a lot of time creating announcement videos rather than marking. Darren, if you're reading this, please provide feedback for your learners so they can improve.
Internet lecture-oriented classes. Due to personal reasons, he often doesn't upload Internet lectures on time, and it's hard to get feedback because he doesn't grade them well. There are many tests and assignments, and the submission date is also tight.
An awesome prof in a course that would otherwise be really difficult - as it is, it's tough but Darren makes it fun. Super flexible with deadlines as well.
Darren was a great prof! The course content was pretty dry but he made it way more interesting than it actually was! I really enjoyed my class with Darren and would for sure take a class with him again!
Darren has been my favourite prof by far. Super nice and understanding guy who wants to see you succeed. Clear marking criteria - if you do the readings and show up you'll do great, and learn a lot!
Darren is a great prof. He is funny and makes the class interesting. He grades fairly and gives good feedback. Highly recommend!
Darren is a legend. I've taken a few classes with him now and while each has a fairly heavy workload with lots of reading, he makes it well worth your time. Entertaining, kind, and dedicated, you can't go wrong by taking his classes.
He deserve a word better than worst. I have never seen such a professor in my life. He will post the things and so long videos that are totally useless and irrelevant. But not a single stuff that might be helpful. if you want your grades in next semester, then go ahead took his course. He literally took whole 3 months for grading. Like seriously???
He is just worst. I mean he took the whole semester for grading infact did not marked the assignments until the final grade deadline. Uploaded a lot of lecture videos which is of no use and he marked all the assignments in one single day and did not even give feedback well obviously feedback is of no use when he is marking everything on final day.
Darren's a beauty, he's super accessible outside of class he makes time for you constantly, overall super caring person who wants to see you succeed. Dedicate time to the papers he grades tough but fair. Do your damn readings because that's what the test material is all about. Ask about bonus questions for tests their free marks!!!
Darren awards those that do the work and go to class. Attendance matters if you care for bonus marks. This class is reading heavy, but if you do the readings it's basically cut and paste what's on his slides. He posts his slides late, but will listen if you remind him to post. He rambles a lot, but has a lot of passion so I don't mind!
Overall, Darren was a good prof. He was clearly passionate about the content, and this is an easy class to ace if you do the reading. The textbook chapters were pretty long, but his slides were pretty much exactly what was in the textbook. barely any assignments apart from the news portfolio due at the end, and the one reflection. He is a cool guy!
