Good teacher. Tests are right from the book.
great teacher & awesome accent. gives u a different way to look at the world
You learn alot and he won't just skip through if you don't understand it.
Hey mate whats up
he just cracks me up!
Great teacher. You don't just learn it for the class, you understand it and can relate it to life
great accent; do the extra credit and you can definetly get an A
well dressed, kind person, updated and orrigional teaching style with an English accent!
His seminar-style critical thinking class was one of the best I've taken at DVC...very original and you get to know everyone in your class. 4 papers, 1 research paper, NO TESTS...but, he doesn't grade easy. Participation is weighted heavily.
he's a great teacher and makes sociology worth your time and effort. all assignments and tests are fair. this is what a class should be like.
Great teacher because he teaches u what u need to know, not just out of the book. His lectures bring almost everyone together. By the end of the semester you will get to know most people in your class, lots of wrk and its hard but at the end it pays off.
U ROCK! NOT SO EASY...LOTS OF READING...BUT PAY ATTENTION AND GET GOOD GRADE...HARD BUT GOOD
very hard teacher to understand and to get good grades in. very hard class deffinately take a different teacher. To stong of english accent to know what the bloody H he is talking about
THE CLASS WAS REALLY GOOD. IF YOUR WILLING TO READ AND TAKE NOTES IN CLASS AND ACTUALLY PAY ATTENTION, WHICH IS REQUIRED OF COLLEGE STUDENTS THEN YOU SHOULD DO GREAT IN THE CLASS. WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMENED.
This is not an Easy class. If you're looking for an easy A where you can just slack off, this is not the class for you. However, the class is extremely fun, discussions are great.YOU MUST READ.LOTS OF writing and must COMPREHEND material. Essays are difficult but teacher is super helpful and straight forward. NO BSing on papers. He can tell.
Funny guy with a britsh accent
this lil brittish man is quite da interesting professor. i recommend not taking his summer course if u expect to get an A and only moderately work. mos def did not work for me.
Took the class in the summer. Fast. Learned a lot. Great teacher. Fair. It's def. college! Great to listen to. Great accent. Great dresser. Love the man.
an great class. funny guy. his test are worded TERRIBLY though. expect to disagree with him on test answers but he is usually nice about it. sometimes expects you to quote the book on the test. extremely interesting class and he makes it fun. easy to love and i was always excited to go to this class. NO TEST MAKEUP so dont miss a test day
Professor Hughes was great! I had to take the marriage and family class to fill up some credits, and wasn’t expecting much out of it. But I had a blast. I have NEVER had a class before where I was actually surprised and disappointed at the end of three hours of lecture! He’s really tough though. The tests are tricky and I never scored higher t
One of the best teachers at DVC. He keeps you interested and entertained the whole class time. Grades off of tests, and gives alot of extra credit. Really easy to pass, because you'll actually like learning the stuff!!!
good.
He's a very interesting teacher. I really enjoyed his cl****. It is entirely essays but he gives you plenty of time to write them. You can really see your progress by the end of the semester.
He is the greatest teachers I've ever had, that doesn't mean he's easy though, the tests are tricky. His accent is great, he really connects with the students, walks around, asks and answers questions personally, spends time after class if you need it. Great sense of style, great shoes and jeans.
great teacher. funny accent. good sense of humor. makes sociology fun. lots of notes and reading book. do the extra credit. you'll like this class. not for slackers.
great teacher. funny accent. good sense of humor. makes sociology fun. lots of notes and reading book. do the extra credit. you'll like this class. not for slackers.
Took him for Social Problems in the U.S. His energy keeps the content upbeat and fun. Don't take this class if you want to slack because he will make you think critically. All essays, but he gives you plenty of time to put forth your best effort.
Very open and willing to help you. Available during office hours. Gave out his cell phone number in case we needed to talk to him about our papers. Makes you think.
He's very available to his studetnts, both after class and during office hours. He requires that you think. If you're looking an easy A, this isn't it! BUT, he is a lot of fun and you get really interested in his lecture. If you don't understand something, he explains it until you do. He has a lot of energy.
Professor Darrol is awesome. He has a great accent that makes him very likeable. He offers tons of easy extra credit and gives you an obscene amount of time to do it. Not too strict on attendance, but notes are VERY important to passing the tests. Buying the book is a must because reading really helps and you'll refer back to it alot.
great teacher. super easy C if you study notes alone but if you read the book also, your set. really interesting too. def recommended
i looked forward going to his class every day! he is a very brilliant man, very funny (with BRITISH accent), very helpful always there reguardless.tests were hard but totally worth it. i learned a lot from him and would re-take him in a heart beat!! always sat in the aisle.. very good choice of cologne!
A wonderful teacher, very engaging. I highly recommend his classes.
Professor Hughes teaches a great class. Not only is he a total pro at what he does but he's always very funny. The class can be challenging at times but as long as you show up, participate in the lectures and study for your tests, you can easily get an A. Don't miss out!
Great teacher
One of DVC's best by far! I thoroughly enjoyed his class and he made it very understandable. He is always willing to help you and gives out his cell phone number. His tests are hard. Reading is a must but it is well worth the work.
His class was difficult to get an A in, but a B is EASY to get. He's a funny guy. There's 4 exams, 1 final, 1 paper and 1 presentation. He drops 1 of the exams. Unless he says you should read a chapter paying attention and taking notes on his lectures is definitely enough. If you want an A you'll have to give it your all though!
GREAT TEACHER!! i enjoyed going to class. He is extremely friendly and very funny and always makes class intersting. You have to take one of his classes!
Lectures a lot but he keeps it interesting. He likes to hear what you have to say and is very open to discussion. Listening and reading the chapters will get you a good grade.. I found that taking notes distracted me though since he moves so fast. 4 tests, 1 final, a paper and a speech. He grades really easy on the paper/speech. Tests are hard! GL!
he is a very bad teacher!!! he moves super fast and not clear in his lectures!!!!
Darrol is really one of the finest professors I've had even at 4 year schools. Smart, funny, very high standards, but really seems to care about reaching his students and making the subject come alive. Highly highly highly recommend him - you have to work hard, but he's worth it.
Darrol is extremely helpful if you ask for help. Makes the class and the subject really interesting. If you even skim through the book and just review your notes (given you take good notes) you will do great in the class. The papers are really easy.
I do not recommend taking the 3 week Summer session of this class. Wayyyyyyy to much information wayyyyyyyy to fast with not enough time to soak it all in. Tests were hard; class was fun. He's English and has a heavy accent. Challenges class by calling people out for in class discussions. Take it in 18 weeks...not 3.
Easily the FUNNEST class I've ever taken. He makes you want to come to class & you learn so much. Read the book & take good notes & you'll do great. :-)
British guy. Very funny. Took his winter intersession classes. His tests are hard but he is helpful. Need to talk to people to write the papers. You can call him anytime to ask for help. Recommended
He is by far one of the best teachers ive taken! extremely funny and knows what he is talking about. makes you want to go to class and actually listen to what he has to say. wrote 4 papers and a final 10 page paper, sounds hard but was easy, just do the reading and listen and you will do fine. also helps you out whenever you need him
awesome teacher; very inspiring and very clear in his lectures. kept my attention for all 4 hours when I took it at night. I go to Berkeley and he would blow 98% of all the professors there away any day. People think he's super hard but really all you need to do is read the book--it's dense, but just do it. don't be lazy! fantastic teacher.
I took his marriage and family class. It was super interesting and absolutely relevant to everyday life. He is very funny and keeps class lectures interesting. I recommend taking GREAT NOTES because he talks very fast and his handwriting is atrocious. His tests are tricky, but he makes up for it with EC. And hes a British cutie with a great accent.
GREAT TEACHER. Keeps the class super interesting, his handwriting is hard to read but he is extremely helpful. We watched a few videos that were relevant to the tribes/cultures we were learning but I never got bored in that class.
The handwriting comments couldn't be truer, but this guy is an awesome teacher. Passionate about his subject and super knowledgable. Sometimes he talks fast as all hell but he's always willing to answer questions and clarify.
Hands down one of the best professors I've had throughout college. His lectures are so informative, and most often apply to everyday life, especially in this class. He really knows his stuff, and always makes his lectures interesting by throwing in some British humor. His tests are hard, but read the book, listen to his lectures and take good notes
Besides being a hot British guy, he is an amazing teacher. He's very passionate about his subject and always willing to help you. Attendance isn't mandatory but you won't want to miss class anyway. His writing is HORRIBLE but his lecture makes up for it :)
he is a great teacher by far, really interesting! there are no tests, just short quizzes on the reading, and 4 papers along with one final paper. i recommend you take good notes for and do the assigned reading, because he definitely expects some CRITICAL thinking
Darrol is one of the most inspiring teachers I have ever had- he might even be the best! I've taken several classes with him and I always look forward to hearing what he has to say. He's interesting and he makes class material interesting, easy to relate to, and meaningful. He has serious concern for his students and is extremely kind. A+++ guy!
Fantastic prof all around. Highly recommend all of his classes.
Great teacher. Really makes you feel like you are having a conversation; rather than a lecture. He makes you write two papers that seem easy until you write them. =) but all in all, he is one of the best teachers.
He is the most amazing teacher ever. He has a great accent and really keeps the class engaged. He has four tests and you do have to read the textbook otherwise you won't do as well as you'd like but it isn't bad at all. Plus he drops a test and gives extra credit that's worth half a test. Definitely take the class. He's the best :)
Darrol is a great professor. His lectures are extremely engaging and he cares a lot about his students. His tests are extremely hard, but there is a paper and a speech to help balance out those grades. In adittion, he offers extra credit. His class is worth the hard work. Awesome guy! Plus his British accent doesnt hurt :)
Had him fall semester, VERY inspiring. Great lectures. I didnt talk in the class, though not for lack of his trying. Usually I would hate this, but i have the feeling he tries to make every student a better one. Truly miss his class, sad 122 is full. Yes, he's charming. Get over it. It's all about the lectures...
He is very good, passionate about students learning. He covers a lot, some test info comes from notes, so attendance is important. Test are not easy. Gives opportunity for extra credit. Plan to take his marriage & family class in the future.
Solid instructor, very energetic lectures and encourages critical engagement with the material. Exams are HARD though.
Mr. Hughes was a pleasure! What a great class; (sociology 125: marriage and the family) Mr. Hughes made the material interesting and enjoyable. His personality truly brought the Information out in a way that gave everyone something to discuss.
Suchhhh a nice guy. He actually cares about you and your grade so he will do anything and everything he can to make sure you do well. If you ever don't understand anything he will help you until you do. He makes class really interesting and jokes all the time so it's fun too. He gave like two homework assignments the whole semester. TAKE HIS CLASS!
I wasn't expecting to like this class as much as I did. He is a super outgoing and hilarious teacher. He doesn't give out much homework, except an essay paper and a speech throughout the whole semester. His tests are hard so you really need to study for them. I've met some really great people from this class so I really recommend it.
He's a cool guy! Very charismatic, and that carries throughout his interesting lectures. Definitely recommend reading text before class so you can participate in discussions. Exams are based mostly off textbook, and get easier when you get used to the style. Put the effort in, ask questions, and you'll take a lot from the class!
I have mixed feelings about prof. hughes. Overall, he's a nice guy. I probably should've participated more and got more help from him in the end. I walked out of his class with a B. Not too bad. Tests are multiple choice but can be quite tricky. Lectures are always entertaining and encourages discussion. I'd recommend him, just ask for help!
If every professor could be as great as Darroll school would be a pleasure. Have taken many classes from Prof. Hughes. He is amazing, inspiring, really supportive towards his students and passionate and excited about what he teaches. His discussions are always so interesting and fun. Highly recommend. Do need to study a lot for tests. Great Prof.
Best teacher I, very positive and encouraging. Easy to talk to.Lectures were very relatable to everyday life; which helped me remember test ?'s .We need more teacher like him in this world!!!
Possibly the best teacher I have ever had at DVC. Grades fairly, is hilarious, and explains everything in detail. If you have to take a social science class, you must take him!
I LOVE THIS GUY. if you are planning to take a social science class he is teaching, take it without hesitation! He is amazing and super funny. He makes you actually want to go to class. And I dig the British (not Australian) accent! The tests arent bad if you read the book and barely any homework. The papers assigned are fun to write.
nice guy, fun classes, grading like hell's kitchen. his speech based on his writing on the broad which is like 10 years-old hand writing. he doesn't cover the text book completely, means: if you miss a note, you're screwed
Aside from his hot British accent and a good sense of humor - what a pain! Lecture notes are written in chalk AND in illegible handwriting, tests are hard (4 throughout the semester), study guides make you feel like you are prepared to get an A but in reality you receive a C. He is extremely smart (has 3 different degrees) but wow - HARD!
Hard grader on tests and he nit picks too. Takes first 10 minutes just to write notes on chalkboard. On the 3 tests I used, I was always 1 or 2 questions away from getting an A, come on! Anyways you have to pay attention, and study guides are somewhat helpful. Hes a really nice dude, and helpful too. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT, and the papers are easy.
I can't stand how he runs around like a chicken without a head. It is distracting. and he is very sloppy. why bother wasting 20 minutes to write notes on board when useless and sloppy. Its just to waste time because he is scatterbrained & unorganized. Tests from book only-lectures are a waste of time. Getting ready to drop even with a.
Very charismatic instructor. He made a class that I wasn't looking forward to a total pleasure. He genuinely cares about his students and how they perform in class. Awesome and charming guy. I wish I was able to take more of his classes.
He is a fun teacher, and he's never boring. He taught the class through lectures, so make sure you are comfortable with lectures and note taking before taking the class.
One of the BEST teachers at DVC!Loved hearing his BRITISH accent!I've never seen a teacher care more about his students. He & his class were chill, easy going, and interesting. Do the EXTRA CREDIT! Gave study guides for tests and final.Tests are passable.Only a speech and paper assigned. Notes are messy, but read the book!Attendance is mandatory!!!
Amazing teacher. Knowledgeable & clear. Knows how to teach sociology from the back of his mind. Interesting teaching method. Two essays throughout the semester, 3 tests & a final. Sign-in sheets were passed around within the first 10-15 minutes of class. A must take class. You won't regret it.
His lectures are engaging and he makes sure to include you in them. Plus, his accent is to die for!
Darrol is the most amazing professor I have had in DVC!
I am actually taking his class right now, and I'm enjoying it. He's funny and is really passionate about Sociology. He never gives homework, besides 2 papers. But they were easy topics. As for tests he gives out 3 and one final. He gives you a chance to do extra credit only one though; DO IT! I would definitely take his class again.
he takes a genuine interest in his students and their success. He's very cool, likable, charismatic, and engaging , but his tests are TOUGH with 'C' as an average grade... for the class. i enjoyed him and plan on taking a class with him again in the summer.
I just took his class in FA14 and it was fantastic. He will always want to help his students out and his lecture is really entertaining so it won't make you bored at all. There are 4 tests and 1 final plus 2 projects which he'll drop one exam with the lowest score. Tests are moderate. it's not an easy A class. PS: You have always to read the book
Darrol Hughes's Sociology 120 Class was one of the best classes I have taken to date. His tests are a living nightmare so expect to study your ass of to pass, his class score average at a low C. That being said you learn a lot from his class, both about sociology and life. I highly recommend taking his class.
Darrol's class was great. He talks and then he got us to talk. Sometimes we had group work. You won't be able to read his hand writing on the board, but that is ok because he is so approachable after class. He was always happy to answer my questions.
Darrol is one of the best and coolest profs I've ever had. Took in FA14. His lectures are interesting and he is hilarious. Reading the book is mandatory to get an A. Exams are fair, should expect at least a B if you listen in class and read. 4 exams, 1 paper, 1 speech, 1 final. Lowest exam dropped. TAKE HIM!!! I will take him again if I need GE's.
Great teacher, funny and interesting. Hard class.
He is awesome, he cares about his students and would help you pass the class, you have to study really hard for tests though especially test 2.I would recommend his class any day any time
By far one of the best professors I've had. He's incredibly passionate & *wants* to be teaching you. His style in general threw me off at first but by the first test I was comfortable prepared-it works. Even in the compacted summer course he covered everything clearly & in detail. He's very accessible & clearly has everyone's best interest at heart
Darrol is such a great teacher, his test are very tough but he wants what's best for you. He cares about his students and he is really charming. This class is really interesting, and he is hilarious. I'd take him again with no problem.
Professor Hughes is a good teacher because he genuinely cares about each and everyone of his students, wants you to succeed, and makes you interested sociology. He is also HILARIOUS and ENGAGING. With that said, his tests are very hard. However, if you take good notes, read the text book, and use a little common sense, you should be ok.
He's a great professor!
I've always heard of people having a professor who has inspired them and instilled a love of learning, he is mine! took his class after being away from school for a year so I was worried. Darrols class has hands-down been my favorite and most influential class ever taken. Its not easy but he gives you all of the tools to succeed:)
Darrol Hughes is the best professor I have ever had in my time at DVC. He inspired me to change my major to sociology in the three week summer course I took with him. The class is by no means easy, it requires attention, thought, and lots of studying, but it is certainly possible to get an A. p.s. he has an amazing accent. TAKE DARRO HE'S THE BEST
Darrol Hughes is a great guy! But his questions on his tests are not basic concepts at all! Class average on the first 3 exams was a C!! Including mine, & I really studied. The questions are SPECIFIC, take a closer look at the book and make sure you read everything!! Essays are just as hard, WRITE WELL, WRITE thoroughly, he has HIGH expectations.
Super tough tests (four of them plus accumulative final). His lectures are fun & interesting however they're really face paced. Two papers and he's really great about them. Pushes back exams and due dates as well. Accessible outside of class. Extra credit is hard, but if you do it early he will work with you for full credit.
Best teacher, funnest class I've taken; I always looked forward to it. He's fast paced and has a British accent. Tests are HARD. The study guides given aren't enough. He does genuinely care about his students, and he'll help you out as best he can. Taking him again if I can. Extra credit is given - get it done early and he'll work with you.
My favorite class out of all the ones I've taken at DVC. Darrol is really funny and his lectures are more of a conversation. Class isn't mandatory but if you miss you'll miss out on good info! What he lectures in class is what's mostly on the test. He does give study guides and they are helpful but read the chapter before class and you'll be fine!
Darrol is great. Super funny and knows what he is talking about. Enjoyed his class but you have to put in work. Lectures are dense so i REALLY recommend showing up. Tests are kinda hard though. 4 tests, 2 papers and 1 final. Drops the worst test grade. You won't ever be bored in class tho he makes it really interesting.
Definitely a class worth going to.
10/10 He's funny and smart. Class is lecture-based, but also kept as open-discussion so there is constant interaction; Made it really easy for me to retain info. 2 papers, 4 tests, + 1 extra credit paper. He's happy to answer questions + give feedback, so don't be afraid to participate in lectures and ask for help! I already signed for his socio125
He's a wonderful teacher- VERY flexible and accommodating. I pretty much turned in both papers late, and rarely showed up to class. He didn't follow the schedule at all, and was very behind towards the end of the semester, so going to class is important in the sense that it's the only way you know when your tests will be. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT.
Passionate about sociology. He's a great instructor and will do anything to help you succeed. Just read the chapters assign and do the study guides
I took Darrol's class during the summer, so it was really fast paced. However, he is a really interesting guy. Very personable and really wants you to succeed. The study guides didn't correlate much with the tests, but my best advice is to read the chapters and do the extra credit. His tests are hard but you can succeed in the class. Loved him!
Hes very interesting in his lectures where you wont lose consciousness from boredom so yea, highly recommend. The main thing in this class is because we were graded on 4 tests and 2 essays, YOU HAVE TO PREPARE FOR THEM. The study guides arent very long but give yourself time to do them! The essays were easy enough.
Daroll is a great guy. He is very knowledgeable about sociology and the examples he uses in class really allow you to understand the concepts. Class is very engaging and entertaining so it is not boring. Tests will not be hard if you read the book and do the study guides.
I very much enjoyed the class and learned a lot. This class has peaked my interest in Sociology.
Professor Darrol is intelligent and makes lectures really fun. Attendance isn't mandatory exactly, but if you don't show up quite a bit, it will effect your participation grade. Do the extra credit and do it way ahead of time so you can give yourself a change to make edits to it AND study for exams. Do all this and you'll definitely do well.
A delightful Englishman. Engaging, entertaining, and quite knowledgeable of the material he's teaching. As a sociology professor, he defends the ideas that murdered more than 100 million people in the last century -- but aside from that, he appears to be a decent chap. Don't be afraid to spar with him on it either -- he'll respect you for it.
Truly the most incredible professor I have encountered in my undergrad. Decided to minor in sociology after taking his class. I wish all professors had the same passion.
A real gem! Hes genuine and truly wants you to succeed and learn. Hes very engaging and makes lectures interesting. Show up, study, participate and do his extra credit. So worth it. While exams were difficult for me, his class was always my favorite and I truly enjoyed it.
Took over the summer. 4 tests, 1 final, 2 papers. no homework. Reading textbook and taking notes of lecture is important. Study guide is given, but does not cover everything you need to know for a test. DO THE EXTRA CREDIT IT HELPS A LOT. His handwriting is bad, which makes taking notes of lecture difficult. Will answer questions and clarifications
By far the best professor Ive had during my college career. Really interesting and engaging lectures, he will go very in depth if you are having trouble grasping something. 4 tests, 2 papers, final, and extra credit helps. Attendance of the class is not mandatory if you read. Wish all teachers were like this guy!
Fantastic teacher. Really cares about you as a student. He has very entertaining stories, but they help you understand the concepts. His tests are based off of the textbook, so you do have to read the textbook to do well on his tests. His lectures are entertaining and he's very passionate about this topic. Everyone should take him!
Really cool prof. If you need to take this class as an elective or you're a socio major, you can't go wrong with this guy. Take good notes and read the textbook, and you should be fine. Didn't bother studying for this class which is why I got a C, but it's totally possible to get an A.
Best professor, maybe even best teacher I've ever had. Lectures were extremely entertaining and informative. He really seems to care about his students and is extremely friendly and welcoming. His notes however can be difficult to follow because of his handwriting and lack of flow between the points he writes down.
Darrol is one of the greatest professors I have taken at DVC. He is passionate about sociology, he gives very entertaining lectures, and he cares about his students. His test can be a bit tricky, but if you take good lecture notes to review, and read the key terms from the textbook chapters (plus do the extra credit) you should be golden.
AMAZING GUY! HILARIOUS!
Professor's lectures were interesting. If you thoughtfully read a book and take notes from the lectures, you'll pass all the tests that he had. Personally, I had to learn a lot of terminologies. All these tests were based on the book, one of them was really hard, but the professor dropped it. Also, he had extra credit essays and not much homework
A TRUE gem. He is so kind and understanding. Everyone in our class loved him because it was so obvious that he cared about his students from the very beginning. His lectures are amazing and funny ( you will never find yourself zoning out). He wants everyone to succeed in his class, and his tests are easy. He let our class use a notecard on test!
I loved my experience taking this class. He makes the class fun and engaging. He is very understanding with assignments, and most of all that English accent eh!
Amazing professor! His lectures are super entertaining/engaging which makes learning the material so much easier. His test questions are pretty tricky so its important to attend all lectures & read the textbook. The course consists of 4 exams, 2 papers, 1 extra credit paper (helps A LOT), and attendance/participation.
an amazing professor, take him, you won't regret it.
Professor Hughes is a top notch person. His lectures are not entirely based on what he will test on later in the semester, however, his story telling and class interaction is something you will not want to miss! A great conversationalist and an even better person, Darrol cares about his students and wants everyone to succeed.
Take his class!!! I really enjoyed the class and that says a lot because I don't say that often. He is a very understanding professor and the lectures are never boring. Of course the usual, do your work and you will do great. His tests were a bit tricky but you can make up points on extra credit. Cannot say enough good things about him.
I took this class over the summer & it was my second time, the first wasn't with him, but I wish it was ! From the start of the class I knew he was going to make it enjoyable and he definitely did, I highly recommend taking his class, hes the best professor I have ever had!!
This professor is way too good to be true! By far one of the best classes I have taken. Sociology could be a boring topic but not with Mr. Hughes! He honestly makes the class so much better and really invites people to engage with conversation rather than a class and student role, while still keeping it professional.
Professor Hughs is a very caring nice guy. I took his summer class online the lectures were very long but also very interesting and helpful to understand the concepts. However I do think reading the textbook is key to get As in his class since a lot of the questions are from the book. Test were easy since average grades were Bs. I recommend him
Loved taking his class! Really engaging professor who wants his students to succeed. Attending online lectures is one thing, but reading the text prior to class and engaging in the discussion with him really helps you learn the material more. I would take another class of his in a heartbeat.
Professor Hughes is amazing . I took him online due to the pandemic, he transitioned very well. He does zoom but if you can not make it to his lectures they are recorded so you can watch that. Tests are easy (try to read/ make sure you know what's up), he has like 2-3 papers and those are pretty easy as well, discussionseasy. Trust, TAKE HIM!!!!!
Easy A. We literally only had 2 assignments all semester & 1 extra credit paper. We had 4 exams total but the answers are all on quizlet so literally copy paste into google. He's super chill too. If you need to take an easy GE take it with Hughes!
He is amazing! There aren't very many assignments at all. A few tests and 2 "papers" which are more just answering questions that he gives you. Not hard at all. No homework.
He was a real gem! We had 5 Tests including the final, 2 papers, and provides one extra credit opportunity. He has the best accent and is really understanding. Barely any homework. Overall A+, thanks Darrol!
He really knows his stuff and makes it easy to understand. Lectures both equally interesting and funny. Very flexible on most assignments/dates. Communicates well outside of class. The work isn't difficult. Cannot say enough good things. Best professor to have especially in the difficult situation of the pandemic.
Great professor. I have never received such positive feedback on my assignments before. There is an extra credit paper you should write to improve your grade. The tests are difficult even with his study guide. I recommend creating a study group. He records his live lectures so you can watch anytime.
Darrol Hughes is top notch! Although this course was online, class met each week for lecture that was both entertaining and thought provoking. He's funny and friendly, but you must do the work and show up, study for the tests, and put your best foot forward. Want to learn? Hughes will not disappoint! Sociology is an incredibly eye opening class.
His lectures are so funny and engaging. There are 4 midterms and 2 short(ish) papers. There is no homework in between. Such an easy class. "Top notch!"
Darrol cares about his students and I found the content to be interesting, but the structure of the class did not work for me personally. There are non-mandatory lectures and 4 exams and two papers. I enjoy having assignments to keep me engaged throughout the course rather than several big ones because I would cram the work into a short period.
Darrol is a real gem. He doesn't make his lectures boring, but his tests are definitely hard (in comparison to his SOCIO120 course). Tests go beyond what is taught from the lectures. However, Darrol wants his students to pass his class and gives one extra credit that definitely gives you a BIG cushion to your grade.
He is sooooooo kind, supportive and nice. I love his classes. the test are heavy and hard you should definitely study for it. he will help you to get a good grade by extra credit assignments. overall not a easy course but very good professor!!
Lectures every week but they're honestly so interesting cuz he makes everything funny and relates it to popular movies and shows. Midterms were a little hard, but read the textbook and you'll get an A. He is one of the best professors I've had, and at the end of the semester he rounds up your grade if you're off by 2% or less. I RECOMMEND!
Honestly my favorite professor so far at DVC. His teaching style was really easy to keep up with and understand. You could tell he really cared about the students and their grades. I recommend doing the textbook readings, it'll help tremendously with the exams. Highly recommend!
Great experience signing up for his class next semester as well ! Fun Ans learned so much must take !
Great instructor so far. Very hard to follow online. To many talk at once and the lectures sound like formal conversations geared to certain students. Very hard to participate and speak up with so many of the same people speaking at the same time throws me off and makes it less interesting to engage. But other than that he is a good teacher.
Super awesome professor! I loved his lectures and thought they were engaging. Be prepared to read a lot of textbook! The tests are fairly easy to moderate and I appreciated all the help I could help emailing, texting and attending the weekend office hours on zoom. Would 100% take a class from Darrol again. I felt like I had actually learned.
Professor Hughes had great lectures that helped me connect and think about how much sociology and its topics reflect off my life. He gives clear memorable examples and has great stories. His course is pretty test heavy and you are graded on ve
Professor Hughes is a hilarious and caring professor. He will make lectures fun, but they'll get a little boring after a while. 4 Big Quizzes and a Final at the end, they're pretty hard and he drops the lowest grade. You do get to use a notecard, but make sure to cross-reference the textbook. Two papers through the year, but they aren't too hard.
Professor Hughes is hilarious and polite and his assignments were easy but his lectures are just too long and hard to keep up with sometimes, his class is also very test-heavy and his test questions were tricky! For constructive feedback, I would have preferred if he'd given us a chance to do test corrections and/or take-home exams.
Professor Hughes is engaging and cares about student learning. Lectures can drag on, but his examples bring topics to life. Tests are challenging but doable with textbook, Unstuck AI, and office hours support.
Very kind and caring professor. Very good lectures with a lot of information. The work is moderate but manageable and he gives a lot of extra credit.
He is the best professor I've EVER taken. It was harder not to pay attention in his class, I was never bored, there were no hw assignments except for a project or two, and he was incredibly funny. It was the one class I had where the entire room laughed together and I cannot fully explain how wonderful, caring, and down-to-earth he was. 20/10
Prof H was one of the best professors I've had. He is SO sweet and funny. He gives such a huge extra credit opportunity that brought my grade up a lot. His class is test heavy and your grade is based off like 7 assignments. He also allowed me to be apart of the class 2 weeks late without being on the waitlist. I think he is better than prof Ramos.
