i love this man already! its only been a week of class so far...he seems very learned and enthusiastic
It would be nice to get one lecture that lasted for the full 3 hours. Every class is a video or a guest speaker and has been a complete waste of time. A "bird" course.
Nice man, but I didn't pay to come to class for 20 minutes, or to watch sooooo many movies!
Davies repeated himself often. He regurgitated the text to a large degree (what little of the text was used). You may need psychic abilities for the final. Not as good as I had heard he was.
take his class once...its good. take it again, and its the exact same thing. can become unbelievabilty boring!!!!!!
He provides his own insight into issues, and has an extensive background in the field of criminology. He does not teach directly from the text, which is nice for a change. He also does extensive reviews before exams. Good prof!
exam was easy especially if you attend lectures, pretty easy marker. as long as you go to lectures you'll ace it!
What is he talking about? His rants about the government are unappreciated and unrrelated to the course I thought I was taking and to the different sections of Deviance courses offered. Could I go back in time, I would switch to another section instead of listening to him make up stories.
i dont know what you who didnt like him were thinking... he is one of the few spirited and truely passionate profs i've had. lectures are interesting, and he knows when its time to finish.
Very good teacher, sometimes off on tangeants but other then that, impressive, created a name for himself in criminology, look up gun control and his name is all over it.
I LOVE this prof -this is my 3rd class with him and I can't wait to take more. He is very passionate and knowledgable about his material. Fun stories to break up the class. Really enjoyable class-highly recomended to everyone on campus! Plus, he's really friendly and approachable. Very accomodating.
this prof is great. his stories are good and he has a lot to share. he is very interesting and lectures are never boring.
very clear what he wants for exam and papers
very entertaining and fun dude. goes on a bit too much sometimes but otherwise very funny
great prof, a paper and an exam, easy material, repeats himself all the time, sometimes borring, but means well, lots of movies and guest lectures.
I think Davies is funny and animated, but I felt that I didn't get my money's worth out of the course. I have no problem taking an "easy" class, but when you pay hundreds of dollars for a class, you want to feel like you got something out of it. Nice prof, but his class lacks structure and focus.
Unstructured and off topic rants. With structure could be a good class.
Awful Professor. Not intellectually stimulating at all. In fact, he is quite repetitive and teaches basic concepts not related to the course. Makes up non existent and laughable terminology that is tested on the final. He is a joke and makes this potentially good 3rd year class useless and at the level of high school students.
i don't know how anyone could find this class boring...this prof is sooo intelligent and has a lot of experience he shares with the class. yes he rants but he makes u think outside the box...exam and paper were fair and easy if u study and go to class. geat prof!!!

Davies has to be one of my favorite profs. He teaches the course well and has a little fun with it. This is my favorite class simply because he keeps the students interested. Darryl Davies is one smart man.
Makes the class interesting with personal stories and anecdotes but still relevant to the course material. Shows interesting videos and keeps the class engaging.
Worst prof I've ever had. Goes off on tangents all the time. So disorganized he actually repeated an entire lecture, then during the review he listed topics he never covered, and told us we'd be tested on it. People only like him cuz he makes jokes about**** and tells stories about serial killers. Makes offensive comments too.
bad prof! He teaches pretty much straight from the text book and the stuff that he does not read from a sheet a paper, are examples of his personal experiences which seem to be COMPLETELY irrelevant to the course.
Awesome prof if you're not a square like some of the previous commenters. Quick witted, downbto earth, fun and interesting. Has a lot to say about criminalogy and his personal experiances. very intelligent. Exam is easy but you must show up to class.
Terrible Terrible! He repeated lectures, gave new info in review sessions, and talked more about his wildlife photography experience than the material! Had no format and no text that was relevant. He is offensive and makes inappropriate comments. On the bright side he tries to be engaging and interesting.
Davies is a very interesting prof, although it is true that there were a few things that he forgot to teach us until the review. the exam was fair providing you attend class.
Good prof., very easy going!
I don't know what some people are talking about on here...prof. Davies is a great teacher - his teaching style virtually ensures an A in his class. His lectures are very interesting and enjoyable. While he does use personal experiences a lot, they are all interesting stories and he'll tell you what you need to know for a good mark. I give him an A+
Good prof. Show up to class and you will do fine. do not buy the book, he does not use it at all and it has nothing to do with the final exam or the assignment.
Although I did well in class, I found that he had no structure, jumped for one point to another with not apparent transition, and talked a bit too much about his life stories.
great prof
He is very knowledgable, however he goes on and on off topic at times. There is no point in buying the textbook at all. He's really not that interesting but is smart.
Well, if you want to be in a class where you dont have a CLUE as to your mark going in to the FINAL exam and you like to watch movies and listen to someone who just tells you no brainer stuff...THIS IS THE CLASS FOR YOU! No organization and no structure...This is a highschool class, people.
He is a great prof. Very knowledgable. I would definitely recommend him to all. I have been taking his courses since first year and I am graduating this June, thus, I would say he's a great prof. with heaps of knowledge. Please ignore those two first comments--they are probably not happy with their marks or something!! He's a great prof.
Davies is obviously a very sexy man, that fact can not be disputed. As for the classes, it is true, he does go off topic, and covers the same material over and over. But, he is hilarious, we all laughed this year. The essays are great, you have a lot of freedom, which allows you to explore topics that really interest you. Plus, fair exams.
Darryl Davies does go off topic a lot and I found myself wondering what would be on the exam come the end of the semester but I never really had an issue with his class. I enjoyed the lectures and the work was not overwhelming.
The lecture material is very repetitive and there are only several main concepts to know for the final exam. Memorize these and you are sure to get an A. The term paper was also very easy to put together. Don't get the textbook, you don't need it!
Prof. Davies's lectures jump around and are often repeated. They're not structured and he does not use the texts (no need to buy them). I liked him 1st semester when he actually gave a lecture; 2nd semester he kind of just sat in front of the class and talked for an hour and dismissed us (I paid for an organized 3 hour class). Easy exam/papers thou
social deviance class for crim majors.. Turned out to be one of my favourite classes.. Very hilarious guy.. reminds me of david Letterman.. though sometimes goes off on funny stories, they actually do fall in line to what he is talking about...2nd smester a bit more disorganized..no need to buy text.. though still take notes in class.. Recommended!
Great!!!!
I didnt like this class..i forget the course number buts its intro to sociology for crim majors. I found he joked about sexual matters too much and was always going off about random topics. i didnt buy the text second semester and got an A-....plus i skipped many classes
he kept giving random useless stories all the time and he jumps all over the place. the subject itself could be interesting but he just drags it on and repeats things.
I have taken many classes with professor Davies, and am always hoping that he will be teaching my classes. Great prof, great stories. Very relaxed atmosphere. Would suggest him over any other soci prof.
100% useless teacher. isn't helpful at all, infact he's hardly ever even IN class and relies on his TA's WAYYY too much. he spends most of his time talking about crim when this is supposed to be an intro to soci class. hate him.
HORRIBLE- boring boring boring- and he thinks he's hilarious- EW- what a waste of $$$. I hated this class the most i have ever hated anything in my university career- this man should stick to research because he CANNOT teach- period.
knows his material and is a great speaker, but that IF HE SHOWS UP, he shows up late to almost every class, doesnt seem organized, going to the lectures is pretty pointless, go over the course outline and the main points from the text, BIRD COURSE
He uses no visuals during his presentations, a question on the final exam worth 10% of my total mark was NOT in the syllabus; and he just repeats common sense things in class. These bore you immensely. The important information he skims over briefly. If you need to retain a scholarship, DO NOT STUDY under Darryl T Davies.
Good mark booster...nice guy with lots of good stories. His videos and ta teaching was never on any of our exams
This professor does go off in tangents and really the text is what you should be studying from. His lectures seem to be not very useful part. Oh and he rewears the same close alot, i don't think he knows he does it
Davies is an awesome professor. I've had him for four classes and they have been my favorite ones to go to. He makes his classes interesting by telling stories and engaging students. Regardless of what others have said, Davies tells you exactly what is on the exam in the last class, so go to classes and you will be able to get a good mark!
Lectures and texbook were both not necessary, but was not his fault. Class basically involved common sense and analytical skills. If you have those, you will pass with flying colours. Had many interesting stories and class was interesting.
His lectures were what I looked forward to the whole week. he discusses real topics and applies them to the texts in a kind of open group discussion. he always started with a film and it was a welcome break from other monotonous lectures. Exam material is all from the text so make great notes and study hard! Taking his classes forever.
This class was not the most entertaining. the best part was that we watched really interesting videos for the first hour of class and always ended class at least an hour early. lectures seemed long and exams only required common sense, not class attendance or texts. mid term essay worth 40%. final exam 60% (ours was only 6 questions long!)
Easily one of my favourite professors. His lectures were always incredibly interesting!!
I took Davies for 4 seperate courses in 1st and 2nd year. Good prof, but there wasn't much difference across the 4 courses (Soci 1001 and 1002, Criminology, Sociology of Deviance). He tells the same stories and teaches the same ideas, the only differences are the textbook. Yes Darryl, we know you worked at a radio station in Saskatoon. WE GET IT!;)
knows his stuff but since he is a crim teacher all he talks about is crim... however he does teach the class well and his TAs are good as well..
Very Good.
I've had 4 classes with him and he is my favorite professor. The method of teaching he uses is useful for everyone. He keeps things interesting by class discussions. Exams are beyond easy. Amazing.
He is really passionate about his work, which make some of his lectures pretty interesting. However, he tends rely heavily on the textbooks, simply reading countless theories without teaching how they apply to the real world. Overall, i liked him.
goes on rants about his life... you hear the same unrelated stories over and over... I also took soci 1002 with him and attending class was pointless... in soci 2445 I was shocked the few days I actually took notes... I'd rather not take him again and hear the same stories over again...
Totally unprofessional. Lectures are his opinion about the CJS, with no empirical evidence/theories to ground anything he says! He still uses terms like "Indian" to refer to Aboriginal Peoples. Gross! All you do is watch poor quality movies and never learn anything outside of the research you do for your own essay. WHY IS HE STILL TEACHING? Creepy!
Loved his class. Actually looked forward to it.
Professor Davies is by far, no holds barred, the best professor at Carleton University. Greatest guest lectures (Allain Olivier, Victor Malarek)!!! One essay and an exam is all he ever bases his marks on. If you attend every class and take notes you will get an A for sure. Classes are interesting and he always has lots to say. Despite what people h
Great lecturer, very engaging, lots of class involovement. No webCT, powerpoint stuff. As long as you attend classes and take notes, which i actually enjoyed doing because his class is so interesting, you'll do fine. Uses very relateable examples but if you arent used to taking your own notes, it may be difficult at first to keep up.
Is on a constant rant about how much life sucks especially Canadian institutions. It simply there for someone to listen to him. If you hate Canada it's justice system move somewhere else. Yes nominated for being a good lecturer but it does not mean a good speaker constitutes quality content! You need to retire with your thoughts.
Darryl Davies is fantastic! Quite charismatic, fun to listen to and very personable. Don't take this class if you love bureaucratic red tape and working for the feds. Great guest speakers, florescent outfits, and nice to look at to top it off. I've had him every semester of my university career, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Most unapproachable professor I have ever come across. He REFUSES to meet with students and will direct you to the TA regardless of the question. The classes are mildly entertaining but that's mostly due to the discussions, and not his lecturing. One exam question was never mentioned in class, but worth 10% of our final mark and MANY got 0 on it.
A personal favorite! I'm a 3rd year Crim student, this is, sadly, my 1st semester without a class with him. I've taken 5 of his classes, each with the same grade content (40% essay, 60% exam). Although classes aren't mandatory to pass - GO! His lectures are the only ones I look forward to. If you go to his class, you won't need the book.
interesting class, but davies rants to much on how bad our legal system, he preaches a lot how it can be changed but doesnt seem to have any motivation to change it himself
Darryl is amazing! He knows exactly what he's talking about and is always willing to explin things twice. He keeps class entertained. He gives you every detail of the book so readings aren't a MUST MUST but you should still do them. The exam, well he says it'll be easy and I'm thinking it probably will be. TAKE HIS CLASSES! HE'S GREAT!
Textbook was very biased and facile; prof made some interesting personal comments regarding feminists that didn't reflect that well on him. I think I took classes that were more challenging than this in highschool. This is not what I had in mind when I imaged what higher education would be like.
Darryl is an excellent professor! His lectures are very interesting and informative. Definitely would recommend this class!
He preaches more than he teaches. a lot about how legal system is TERRIBLE and how the police are out to get you. he is well educated and experienced but seems somewhat bitter about the system. personally i find he is charismatic and easily makes an impression on those without a history of law or crim
Taken 3 classes with this prof and I think he's great! Very passionate about what he's talking about which makes the material really interesting.
he seems rather arrogant and likes to point out he went to cambridge - a lot! but the class is good, and he always backs up his arguments. he says he's open to others expressing their opinions, but then rebuts them so he 'wins'.
We all get it, the Criminal Justice System sucks. I don't need to pay $500 to sit and hear that class after class. Biggest waste of time.
Very bad professor. He takes a moralistic right wing and extremely anti-feminist take on a great deal of topics (including sex work). The novel assigned the course (The Johns) is EXTREMELY problematic, yet this is never brought up in the course. He's an uncritical professor who does not create safe spaces in the classroom.
Every class will make you laugh as he cracks jokes at the way ottawa is run and makes you think mre critically about law enforcement..
amazing. so passionate, highly articulate and interesting.
Davies was my least favourite prof so far. His classes were full of his own opinions, and there was not a single thing I learned in this class that made it worth the money. Also, he is impossible to contact outside of class, even when I scheduled an appointment. Overall, not impressed.
Unless you want to listen to him brag about he went to Cambridge, avoid this course. Davies can be funny at times, but mainly comes across as arrogant. He gets lost in his own tangents so that note-taking is impossible. The most interesting parts - the speakers, the movies - are always when Davies isn't talking.
Documentaries are pretty interesting but extremely one sided. P. Davies rants and raves about how useless and corrupt the police force is and how we should stand together and change the CJ system. This pretty much summarizes every lecture. So, spare yourself the repetition .. Easiest class ever! Read your textbook and you will do awesome!
Teaching is about more than regurgitating a book and he accomplishes this by bringing in recent events and applying them to the class topics. You can either take notes in class or read the book -you don't need to do both; exam was easy and essay was marked fairly. He's a bit cynical and one-sided but he's passionate so take it with a grain of salt.
Great prof and passionate about his topics, but very jaded by the system. Have an open mind but don't lose your opinions in his class. Goes on crazy rants about the RCMP and criminal justice system, funny at first but by round 200 they get annoying. challenging course i thought, overall he's good
Prof Davies knows his stuff, but he does not know how to teach. Though engaging and humorous, he preaches more than he teaches. If you want an easy class and to hear personal anecdotes all year instead of relevant information about criminology, take his class. Personally I was disappointed with the lack of relevant material.
Lectures weren't about anything in the textbook. It wasn't until his review that I heard about the theories that would be on the exam which is worth 60% and includes 5 questions. Guest lecturers were extremely interesting, but he would disagree with them once they left. He even lost it on a student who disagreed with him on an issue. Bad professor
Very engaging prof. Lectures were interesting & extremely relevant. His exams are generally worth 60% however they are extremely fair. He's very passionate & always willing to help his students succeed. I've taken 2 of his classes so far & enjoyed them both thoroughly.
He rags on the criminal justice system... A LOT, I could not stand that, BUT in the end, he keeps you engaged in the lecture. Go to class and use the text to fill in extra notes and the exam is a breeze. It was very obvious what was going to be on it. Also has a lot of guest lecturers! Super cool ones!
Yes, Darryl hates the system but he has reason to be jaded. Take what he says with a grain of salt and dig deeper into what he's saying. If you're easily offended or sensitive, take another class. His guest lectures are amazing. The papers are marked fairly and the exam is incredibly easy (6-7 questions - based only on the lectures). Great class!
he rags on the legal system and the bad situations the RCMP has been involved in, and preaches his opinion alot. If you are easily swayed you might come out of this class with the exact opinion as him, as you hear it every lecture. He has lots of guest lectures, but it comes across as kind of lazy
Class was a breeze, though it was extremely frustrating. He spends the entire time ragging on the criminal justice system, I'd like to see him do a better job. I took Crim to learn about theories, and things relevant to criminology, not to learn about how much the justice system sucks. This class is called Criminology, not "Criticisms of the Police"
AVOID HIM. Most classes are spent reading as fast as he can directly from the textbook, suplemented with irrelevant movies and guest speakers which aren't even tested on. Constantly bashed the criminal justice system and refuses to use WebCT. TA's seemed a bit arrogant as well.
Brilliant professor i ever came across with
Did Carleton check to see if Daryl actually went to school? He does not seem qualified to teach anybody. He talks about how much he hates the justice system. Do we have to pay to hear that every week?
I left class most of the time feeling frustrated and actually angry. I never once got the feeling that he prepared for a lecture: no slides, no WebCT, no real direction for the lecture. He just read a little from the text, and we discussed it (which usually turned into him ranting). I don't understand how he still has a job.
One of favourite profs, registered for 2 more of his classes next year! Class isn't mandatory to attend, and the exam is the easiest one i've ever had. All he wants from you is to form an un biased opinion.. so you cant do anything wrong!
Most interesting prof I had in my first year, he made coming to class fun, and intriguing! Very funny, down to earth and also opinionated. I highly recommend Darryl to anyone who wants to have their eyes opened.
Fair professor, interesting delivery. Good mix of resources, lecture, films, class discussion.
I think he is an amazing professor, unlike most profs, he has an extensive background in the field, and definitely knows what he is talking about. I find his opinionated and dynamic way of teaching a whole lot better than what most profs do nowadays like reading off the slides and directly quoting the textbook. I would definitely recommend him.
AMAZING professor! By far my favourite prof at Carleton. Had him numerous times. Such a passionate individual hoping to spark change in our CJS. Always willing to talk after class or in Roosters. Lectures were always filled with interesting topics which make you question your stances. Overall Darryl is a wonderful and passionate professor! Love him
AMAZING professor! Love him
I get the impression people think Darryl is really cool because he's the 'anti-professor' who will swear in class and say outrageous things. Unfortunately most of the time he comes across as an arrogant and ignorant old man. On our first day of class he suggested to everyone that "affirmative action in modern society disadvantages the white man".
Amazing! Took all of his classes. He was the only memorable prof I had!
you will think he is cool at first because he has a very "vivid" personality, but his antics wear thin quick. the actual lectures were completely centered around criticizing the crim justice system, while actual course/exam material was hardly ever mentioned. Essay was straightforward (if u like the topics). guest lectures were hit or miss
He comes off as a little intense and intimidating at first, but he's got a nutty, funny sense of humour. Only one assignment and the final exam. Kind of wish there was a midterm rather than the essay assignment since it's hard to predict what'll be on the exam. Assignment = 12-page paper. Easy enough; lots of choices. Decent prof, decent course.
DO NOT, under any circumstances, take two classe with him during one semester. Took deviance and crim at the same time only to realize he was saying the exact same thing in both classes. Kind of hard to believe I paid him to be that lazy. Maybe four pages of my notes ended up being study-worthy since he goes off on a tangent all the time.
Darryl is an amazing prof. if you are willing to put the effort into attending his class and pay attention. He speaks with such clarity and assertion that it is hard to day dream in his class (too much interesting content to miss). Very fair marker. Would definitely recommend him! Only complaint: no WebCT, but that's not too important!
A PHENOMENAL professor, very passionate about his work and challenges students to think differently and beyond what we read in the papers or see on T.V. Lectures are always engaging and he does not usually read from the text which is a good thing because it forces you to. One of, if not my favourite professor at Carleton BY FAR!!
AVOID! I liked him at first but we haven't learnt anything. He just shows movies and talks about being a parole officer. Never gives directions or instructions. Turning out to be my worst class this year.
Take if you want to spend your tuition money on W5 docs and listening to guest lectures. "3 hour lectures" are almost always under 90 minutes.
I am currently in Prof. Davies class and I love it! He uses real life examples to explain theories. He makes it very clear that your grade reflects how much you want to put into the class, which in my opinion is fair.
He is not ok. the only prof that will base all of his lectures on TV(W5. He has no notes for students and will waste your time if you want to learn. If you just want a place to chill and get an easy grade then go for it.
I don't understand how some people think he's a great professor. Literally, he is useless. He doesn't prepare for lectures. If you have an interest in sociology, and actually want to learn something to prepare you for future courses DO NOT take his class. If you want an easy course, that's a joke, then you might be able to tolerate him.
This was my second year attending a class taught by prof Davies. I found that first year (intro to sociology) he was useless. But His criminology and deviances classes are interesting. He much more passionate about teaching these classes and I found them very informative and interesting. Give him a chance in your second year!
Awesome professor!!! Extremely helpful, and teaches concepts in a way that you'll never forget. Will take classes with him whenever possible! Best prof at Carleton, for sure!
No need to read the textbook. Just memorize the academic stuff he says in class. Only about 25% of what he says is on the exam. Memorize this and you will do well. He's great if you aren't all that interested in the subject, but not the greatest prof if you are a serious student.
Everybody has its own taste and it is fine. But, I don't think ppl should say he's useless which is wrong. He wouldn't be there for so long otherwise. I'm currently in his class. He is amazing prof. Yes, he has his way of teaching but so do all the teachers world wide. WE ARE UNIQUE accept it. He's good & helpful. The W5 videos support the topics.
If you're interested in the academic side of things... then don't take this class. He is very animated and discusses many hot button issues but he presents material in a very impartial way. Don't read the book, you just need to remember the academic things he says in class. Interesting discussions, but his hippy drum makes me want to vomit.
Stopped going to a class I was excited to study because of the prof. If you want to hear a prof rant about police brutality and how the government is corrupt then come to his class but if you want to learn anything about deviance outside of those two constructs then dont bother. Very egotistical, alternative points of view are quickly shot down
Good Prof, does not use any slides, no midterm, evaluation is based on an essay and a final exam. Randomly calls on people to answer questions, it forces you to go over your notes the week before to make sure you know your stuff. Interesting material.
Take his classes!!!!! He`s a wonderful teacher!!!!!!!!
Professor Davies is in the top one percent of great professors. He makes you think outside the box and challenges your current way of viewing the justice system. His lectures are humorous, insightful and full of class participation. A great class to play devil's advocate and debate amongst students, I highly recommend taking Deviance with Davies.
Darryl has a strong reputation @ Carleton, either you really love him or hate him, no in between. Easy exam, and easy essay assignment. He's kinda heavy on the police hate but he backs it up with facts. He's a good teacher, but comes off as an arrogant person which makes him hard to approach for any help you may need with the course material
I never went to his class. His antics were difficult to sit through. I found his teachings to be completely muddled and sometimes irrelevant to the topic at hand. He is a very opinionated prof who, I feel, attempts to push his views on students.
He is an excellent prof. He can be a little scary but it's only because he is passionate. He always asks before, after, and during class if we have any questions and is always helpful to students. His lectures can be a tad bit disorganized but just read the textbook to understand. He always wants to keep the class talking and engaged. A+
Absolutely worst professor I have ever had. Rambles on about how much he hates police every class, shows the same documentary's in all his classes and is unapproachable and argumentative about everything. 60% final exams. At the end of the year I couldn't say what I had learned in his class.
Very interesting class, but tough marker.
My favorite professor of second year hands down! Although Darryl doesnt use lecture slides, he is not hard to follow or listen to. He is very opinionated which some may not enjoy but overall is an excellent prof! a lot of in class movies which arent on the exam and a fairly easy exam!
I took SOCI 2445 and SOCI 2550 with Davies. After my first class with him I was really intimidated and wanted to drop the course. He called upon people randomly and seemed mean and unreasonable. But he grows on you and is a pretty funny guy who loves participation. Lots of choice for the essay and easy exam.
Great professor! He's very opinionated and can definitely seem scary at first, but he's very approachable and nice. He knows his information and everything he says, he can back up with empirical evidence. Easy class if you put the time and effort into doing the work and following along with his lectures.
Darryl is an excellent professor. Although he bashes on law enforcement a lot, he is very interesting to listen to and it is easy to tell that he is passionate about criminology. His teaching style is very refreshing and his views offer a different perspective in the field of criminal justice.
Loved this prof. He really grows on you, and has really easy exams. He seems intimidating at the beginning but he really is a nice person once you get to know them. Very strong on his opinions and views but if you can provide facts and evidence to support your claim, he will gladly listen. Really great guy once you get to know him.
He is an awesome prof. He was intimidating at first, but he is very passionate about what he does. He got me interested in this class. I loved this class!! Would definitely take another class with him.
Wonderful seminar. I would definitely recommend it to anyone! For 4th year, it was on the easy side, no need to facilitate class discussions, etc. He well prepares you for the course paper, and the final consists of only 4 simple questions. Textbook is not necessary, he gives all important information in class.
Content and material is interesting... once you teach it to yourself. He gets very distracted in class and loses sight of the course objectives and the content that needs to be covered. He is very hard to approach when looking for assistance with the course and very rarely ever fully answers the questions being asked.
Makes the class interesting. Rants a lot, but they're always relevant. Very clear on what we need to know; the major theories are important, the rest of the book is supplemental. Loved the class and would definitely take another by him.
Atrocious opinionated rants that derailed any attempt at learning. Read the textbook. It's the only thing you'll learn in this class other then viciously one-sided argument where facts counter to his opinion are completely ignored.
You could tell he has a bias towards the cops. He talks about how cops are bad. He does not post anything on CuLearn so that means no lecture slides. His class consisted of one paper and one exam. I did bad on the paper and good on the exam so got a C+. Exam was easy.
Avoid at all costs possible.
Even though he comes off as tough and arrogant at the beginning he really goes on you. He definitely knows his stuff and is a great professor. Definitely recommend him and will be taking more of his classes as i continue with my degree. He doesn't use CULEARN or power point so attendance is a must but over loved him!!!
Terrible professor. Does not use CU Learn so he does not post lecture slides. Only one long paper and the final. Exam was ridiculous. There were only 6 short answer questions which were each worth 10% of the final grade. I couldn't remember the answer to one question about a theorist and that cost me 10% of my grade. AVOID THIS PROF!!!
I really liked his lectures, and if you go to his classes he tells you exactly what is on the exam! Unfortunately there was no midterm so you don't get much experience with his marking. Study what he tells you to and you'll do fine! An added bonus, sometimes he makes a funny.
Darryl gets a bad reputation that is not entirely deserved. Yes, he does rant and takes a stern "anti-Police" stance and at times the class gets stale. However, he is very clear, engaging, and personable. His exams are six short answer questions and revolve around lists he mentions. Once you get used to him the classes are good.
Worst Proff at Carleton. He uses his classes to push his own personal opinion (and has nothing to back up his opinion, and ignores you if you bring up facts that contradict him) He rants, and does not teach. another professor could teach in 10 min what takes him 2 hours to teach in between rants. avoid at all costs. be ready to teach yourself.
I loved Darryls classes. I know he is really opinionated and a lot of people seem to be turned off by that. But honestly his lectures were interesting and kept me engaged. Would definitely take his classes again.
Class is a 40% paper and 60% final. At first he came across as intimating but he really grows on you over the semester. He is quite funny and gets his point across. He can sometimes go off topic but he doesn't make you pay for it and his exam is pretty easy and straightforward. Overall and excellent prof.
Not usually a big Davies fan but I actually enjoyed this class. There were a lot of guest lecturers, he spoke about a lot of interesting police topics and showed some really good videos. The structure is simple 40% paper and 60% exam both aren't overly difficult. With that being said Darryl very opinionated and all of his arguments are one sided
This is the third class I've had with him. He's opinionated. You don't need his textbooks. He says the most important stuff and his exam never focuses on other info. He pretty much tells you what's on the exam during the last lecture. I found this to be the most boring class. He lectured for 2 12 hours but the important info took about 20 mins.
I personally love Darryl's lectures and will be taking my 4th class with him next semester. He is very opinionated but all you really need to do to pass his class is pay attention and write down the lists he provides. On the last class he tells you exactly what will be on the exam, which is usually his long lists. I find this class an easy A.
extremely opinionated, often wrong, contradicts course content and required text, really can't believe this guy has a job, Accountability Zero,
He is one of the most inspirational professors in the entire university. He has put his heart into changing the world for the better. His life has been devoted to bettering his students and society. He is truly a visionary and everyone can learn something from this genius!
Very opinionated and should not be a professor, just talks about how much he hates cops the whole time and that they are the "real criminals" and even though it's a deviance class there's a lot worse people out there than friggen cops. take the class with a different prof stick to the textbook
This was the 4th class I took with Professor Davies. I found this class (risk factors and prevention programs) extremely interesting and definitely recommend it. Standard paper/exam class. He does tend to ramble a bit but that can be overlooked. Easy A class. Material is interesting and actually useful if you're interested in this field
I've taken 4 classes with Darryl, one word: Easy. He lectures for roughly two hours about hating cops and past mistakes out Police of Chief has made. If you're passionate about our current police culture, don't attend. Otherwise he is hilarious and the class is a 40/60 split, 12 page paper and final exam. Never had a bad grade, very effortless.
good prof. gets his point across, is funny.
He is one of the best profs ever. Very inspirational and hilarious too. Took two courses with him and couldnt enjoy them more. Tips: dont get the bloody book; write down the things he read from his booklet (he will read them twice to the students and ask if anyone is missing something); probably attending is very important if you wanna pass
Darryl Davies has had a lot of experience working in the CJS system and lectures for 2 hours. He does use personal experiences, rants about bad cops as well as a documents to teach. If something is important, such as theories, he will read them from his book and go over them twice to make sure you have them. His marking is 40% paper and 60% SA.
Extremely hard instructor. sarcastic when you ask for help. gives you plenty of study aides to use that are helpful but expects that you know absolutely everything about the human body. Spent 20+ hours on each test and still was failing. you also dont get points for HW unless its 90 or above. which they still take a long time to find all the answer
Never take Davies, never. Seriously. Just do yourself a favor.
-Teaches 2 courses required for Crim (and Soci?) degrees -Pretty easy material -No slides in class or online -Rambles, he reads from his binder when giving course material -Take/find good notes -Usually ends class with a documentary(helpful on exam/assignment) -Most classes finish early -Wears crazy sweaters
He's so interesting. You need to go to class or you will have 0 idea about what to study for the exam. 60-40 exam-essay class. Hard but honestly worth it.
The prof makes the course, he is easy to talk to and teaches interesting topics. I would defiantly take a class he is teaching again.
Excellent Prof ! Teaches from evidence based point not opinion. Cares about his students and the material taught. The class size was about 300 and he made everyone feel included. He is very easy to speak with and teaches paramount learning objectives.
the material is interesting and the way he teaches it makes it obvious what is important. Although, due to the fact that he does not use computers and he just talks the entire class, it is quite difficult. If you don't like to actually attend class, do not take this class.
Astounding. He's very opinionated at times, & he does introduce guest speakers and incorporate documentaries or articles related to class material. Dr Davies does cover A LOT of content, but it's very manageable. He's fair and makes it clear that there are no surprises on the final exam (worth 60%). He can be a tough marker though - so work hard.
This was a mandatory class for my major and I loved this professor. He doesn't believe in technology, doesn't even own a cellphone so good luck passing if you don't attend the classes. Other than that, he explains and repeats things if necessary. I found that if you attend the lecture and skim the readings you'll do well.
He is okay, he doesn't use technology so don't count on culearn (it doesn't exist for this class) or slideshows. He is very opinionated and hates the police force . Often plays the same documentaries in all of his classes (seen the same one 3x). Very funny and intelligent professor who does know a thing or two about the justice system.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Exam consisted of six questions of random lists, no understanding needed. Content of the exam was also not representative of the material as so little was covered and some it seemed quite random as it was hardly discussed. Also, his lectures are just him ranting about the government. Very disappointed.
Everyone who has taken a class with Davies and does not like him clearly did not show up to class. Professor Davies knows what he is talking about, backs everything up with facts and wears awesome sweaters. The man is a legend. The content is not difficult by any means, and you can easily figure out what the exam consists of and how to do well.
He is a very difficult professor, but he is a great one. He is kind of inaccessible. He is clearly passionate and wants to better his students. Do not expect to not try in his class, and pass. He does not use lecture notes or slides. Go to class, pay attention and you should pass. It is university, do not expect to get by without any work.
This was the only class that I can say I never skipped all semester! I enjoyed every minute of Darryl's lectures. Although he can be very opinionated at times, what he is saying is factual. He was also quite funny.
I really enjoyed both classes i took of Darryl's - Sociology of Deviance and Studies in Criminal Justice, guy loves to rant and shows a lot of documentaries but his class was enjoyable and pretty entertaining at times. I would recommend getting the textbooks for his classes because he does speak quickly - it is a good tool to study for exams with
Davies is a great prof if you actually show up to class. Attendance is typically low but is very passionate about his field. Dont count on CUlearn because he doesnt use it and lectures from a binder. Lots of rants about the RCMP but always ties it back to theories in class. Fair marker and if you show up to exam review he basically gives u the exam
Lectures are useless and the textbook is beyond difficult to read.
No notes, no slides, no extra information and he doesn't use Cu Learn. You have to show up for his class because he doesn't post anything. 40% Essay and 60% final. Don't take if you are looking for an easy course. Although he is very funny.
Didn't seem like he liked being there. Lots of ranting. He had a few speeches about government that he'd repeat every few classes. 40% essay and 60% exam exam is only 6 questions all of which are lists, he did an outline in last class. He left early from classes whenever it was possible, even left the exam after the sheets were handed out. he's OK
Seems like he enjoys screwing his students over. Can't tell if he's telling you a story about his life or if its information he'll test you on until its too late. Essay 40% and final 60% with only 6 questions. His "review" class is only a very fast repeat of the entire course. It gives you no indication of what will be on the exam at all. Goodluck.
He has done just about every job in the CJS and is extremely knowledgeable and passionate. I loved going to his lectures they were all very interesting. Taking notes in class is easy because it's all lists and he makes it clear what you should be writing down. Lots of interesting choices for the essay and exam was super easy, all lists
Doesn't use cuLearn and has no slides. Can be kind of a jerk sometimes, but is very knowledgeable in his field and is well respected. Sometimes he rants about the number of times he's been on CBC, and how he did research for (and now despises) the RCMP. If you don't show up to class, there is almost no other way of getting the notes, unless u beg
The man is an egomaniac as well as arrogant, self centered and closed minded. Not open to discuss differing opinion. Becomes very obnoxious and insulting when proved wrong. What more can one say?
Very interesting lectures. I have ADD and Davies' classes are one of the few I can stay focused for 30+ minutes. Knows what he's talking about. If you attend classes you will pass no problem
Controversial but inspirational.
Excellent speaker, very funny and inspirational. He is very entertaining and brings attention to the corrupt nature of our government and justice system. One of my favorite professors, however, he does not use lecture slides or CU learn which can be an issue for some. I would recommend him as a professor though, a class that will not bore you.
Too many guest lectures
His class is meh. He only talks for 20 minutes and puts a film on for the rest. Hes funny but bad at teaching, as he is very opinionated. His TA's are stingy with marking the past 3 years.
Lectures consist of him complaining about the RCMP, hard to determine his opinion from his lecture content, exam worth 60%. Goodluck.
-Talks very fast if at all content related -Prepare to hear about how females are at fault, and trump rocks
Interesting lecturer. Definitely do the readings, but he does a good job of covering the material. He refuses the use technology whenever possible, so lectures are mandatory because he does not post slides or anything online for students.
Also for SOCI2450. His lectures were interesting and covered the topics but with no powerpoint and no Culearn, it was difficult to decipher what was important lecture material and what was a tangent. He seemed to care more about showing the class compilations of his 5 minutes of fame doing tv interviews than answering questions regarding the exam
Although I can understand why many people bash on Darryl, I think he's a great prof. Something I've picked up from taking a few classes with Darryl is take notes whenever he is standing at the podium/stand as it is hard to decipher between what is important or not as there are no powerpoints or Culearn for this course.
Some people tend to get frustrated with him as he doesn't use slides or CUlearn but if you actually show up to class, pay attention and take good notes you will pass. His exams are worth 60% but they are very straightforward as there are no trick questions. Overall he is a great professor who is very passionate about the subjects he teaches.
I have come to realize that students either love or hate professor Davies. I absolutely adore him. His classes are so interesting - his view on crime and the way he teaches it is incomparable to anything I've ever learned before. He is one of the few professors that actually made me love my major and inspired me in the field of criminology.
No slides, he just lectures so class is mandatory. However, I have had him for 3 classes and his grading for essays and final exams stay consistent and very straight-forward. I really enjoyed learning from him, but I can see how some people do not like him.
Professor seems more interested in showing how intelligent he is and how incompetent police are. Im not sure what to take from lecture, he mostely just goes on tangents about how he made the RCMP look foolish for wanting assault weapons or how his neighbours like to call the police. 3 hours is an awful long time to listen to his strong positions.
good guy
the way he talks it feels like the course is an anti-rcmp course rather than a sociology of deviance thing. thanks for everything darryl
Davies teaches maybe 20 minutes of content, plays a video, and spends the remainder of his 3 hour lectures ranting about his issues with RCMP and law enforcement. If you actually want to learn something during the course, stay as far away from Darryl Davies as possible. Guest lecture with Don Donovan, don't even bother attending.
He won't post his slides on CuLearn, so show up. Don't buy the textbook - you won't need it. Sure he talks about the RCMP a lot, but the reason why he hates them is because of sexual assaults that occur on the job, so at least he's raising awareness. Paper and exam were easy, literally just follow the outline.
Darryl was very well versed in the topic of criminology but he doesn't have lecture slides so you need to go to class, he speaks very fast and often goes off topic. Material in the textbook wasn't really covered in class so have to do the readings. Final was 6 long answer questions each 10% and was cumulative, midterm was a paper. Very stressful
Professor Davies courses are as straight forward as it gets in regards to post secondary academia. Unfortunately hell be missed on his 1 year LOA. I highly recommend to everyone who has an option of taking his classes from Fall 2020 onward, register quickly before you miss a extraordinary chance. 5/5 professors are hard to come by.
He is a fantastic Prof, willing to help you and debate you. Extremely knowledgeable and respected. That said, his classes are tough, I retook both. Great Prof but try to schedule his classes during an easy term.
Davies is a great prof. He brings attention to real issues within our criminal justice system, and does a great job teaching. Doesn't post lecture slides so you have to attend class, but if you go to every class and take good notes you will do fine
He talks a lot....... better listen or you'll miss half the testable lecture.
Although at times I find he can be overly critical of policing, overall he makes good points in regard to police corruption and he definitely knows his stuff. I'd recommend getting the textbook as the final exam uses theories from it. Interesting class overall and if you're looking to challenge yourself I'd definitely recommend it.
The worst professor I have ever had. Spends his entire class talking about how much he hates the RCMP and OPS. He lectures about his opinions only and just thinking about going to his class puts me in a bad mood. Exam is easy but paper grading is extremely inconsistent. AVOID AT ALL COSTS IF POSSIBLE.
Enjoyed the fact that he would show us documentaries, but if you're the type of person to skip class I wouldn't recommend it. Seems to talk about his personal life and goes off track about the lecture. If you don't like 12 page essays and 6 questions finals this is not the class for you. I didn't mind him but at the same time he wasn't the best .
If darryl was teaching this class as a presentation, he would get a D because he doesn't looks up and reads from his book the whole class. No slides No support (strict about contacting TA's) Class is 50/50 (half on essay half on final)
Professor Davies classes are incredibly passionate! I was enthralled by Dan Donovan's recent lecture. Too many people have been victimized by the police who take an oath to serve and protect, oversight is required to ensure lives are being protected and that police receive proper training that reflects modern society. Thank you Mr. Donovan!!!
He's very passionate & he knows his stuff but you have to be a professor too. It's not all about lectures and your initiatives in the community. He doesn't want you to contact him at all everything has to go through the TAs but he doesn't even provide the TAs with much information. He doesn't post lecture slides or topic outlines so notes are crazy
Professor Davies is passionate about his work however he is very monotone when teaching the class, he simply just reads from his own notes and does not provide any additional lecture slides. He is not very easily accessible and prefers you to contact Ta's before reaching out to him. Lecturers are extremely boring and are not interactive.
Scored well in the class, but holy hell is it dry and repetitive. Lectures are necessary, as well as solid lecture notes; if you have VOD access, watch them multiple times. Mid term is stupid easy, but long. During the final he was more focused on proctoring than teaching. Got the credit and CGPA boost, but he's an abysmal professor.
I really liked darryl! very nice man, but also very critical of policing &makes some great points. Beware, he does not use slides so you have to attend lectures. graded 40% for midterm paper and 60% on exam. Exam was 6 short questions based on lectures & wasnt too difficult. I enjoyed the guest lectures as well. Dont need to buy course materials!
Classes were three hours long and he spends about two-thirds of it talking about himself. He has no online notes so you have to go to class, and he makes the course seem very anti-RCMP the way he talks. Was extremely rude to a student who expressed an opposing opinion. We graded 40% for the midterm paper and 60%final which was 5 long questions.
Professor Davies was not a good lecturer. He goes on about how bad the justice system, criticizing everyone involved (police, lawyers, judges), but rarely offers any solutions. He also likes to make it seem like he is open to conflicting opinions but will shut down any discussion if it doesn't fit his narrative. Overall just a bad prof.
his lectures are so long and boring, he repeats himself over and over. doesnt even stick to the syllabus and rambles on. no slide so its hard to pick out what actually matters.. his ta's suck or at least the one i had did. the course content was interesting but it was poorly delivered
Brutal. Reads everything. Doesn't lecture. Claims he's an expert, but uses 1970-80s readings and his friend's non-peer reviewed magazine. It wouldn't be acceptable if a student did this. Read word for word from a wiki article defining Peel's Principles with no citing, but spouts off about academic integrity, intellectual property, and plagiarism.
Professor Davies is very passionate about this field. He has a strong opinion and makes sure you know how he feels. However, I agree with most of the things he says and respect the work he does. Overall I think Davies is a good prof but I'm not a fan of the talk-at-you course delivery with no PowerPoint notes.
Professor Davies is brutal and is not accessible at all. His lectures are pre-recorded from years ago and he asks students blatantly not to contact him. Questions in the ask your prof forum have gone unanswered for weeks. The mid-term paper is awful. Its due on the fourth week and is 12 pages in length on material he has not taught yet.
This course is a mess. Davies reads everything from the textbook and has no slideshow to support. His lectures are jumbled and dont even follow the schedule on the course outline. What am I paying for Carleton?
Most of the negative reviews on here complain about him being inaccessible, yet the courses they are reviewing from have 200+ students in them. If they had any common sense they'd understand that courses that large require TAs and THEIR JOB is to reply. Also, he's not "Anti-Cop" he actually tells you the truth about policing. Darryl is the best.
I see students on here complain about the 40/60 grade distribution.. However, if you can't deal with that switch courses once you see the syllabus instead of bashing Darryl. Also, yes he tells personal stories but that's what makes class even more interesting. Yes, he has his opinions, but is he not allowed to? If you can't handle that, leave.
I'm not sure how students are saying his lectures are monotone or boring. He is the most entertaining lecturer, with extremely interesting classes. I'm in my fourth year, and Darryl is my favourite professor I've ever had. It's truly unfortunate to see students make negative and untrue comments toward such an amazing professor. He's the best.
I found this course interesting; it certainly fires me up for more like it. Prof Davies is passionate abt his subject matter! The docs supplemented the book and lectures nicely. Some of the lecture material is dated by a yr or 2. Additionally, notes or slides would help. It's difficult for some to take notes, esp. if student has disability(s).
Only 2 things were being evaluated the entire semester and both were given very brief and confusing instructions so you weren't sure if you were even doing them correctly. TAs gave students different instructions and were not concise. Lectures were beyond prerecorded (about 3+ years old) and failed to clear up ny confusion within said lectures.
Hes very passionate about his class&is engaging&has documentaries in each class. Hes against the CJS which was great but he is a very hard grader, one paper-40% & one test 60%. His test is easy but the paper was graded so unfairly, you cant fight your grade or he will reduce ur grade. Attend his lectures&ur good. doesnt care about his students tho
The absolute best professor at Carleton University. The only professor that makes me exited to hear him lecture for three hours. His lectures are extremely memorable as he conveys course content passionately and enthusiastically, which is inspiring to say the least. There could not possibly be a better professor for the courses he teaches.
His lectures are clear, one can easily distinguish what information is important/testable and what information is supplementary to such. He also provides clear instructions for the assigned essay/assignment, making it rather straightforward. Also, his exam is simple if you put in the effort and pay attention in class. What more could you ask for?
In all honesty, there's no other professor this great. His teaching style is the best ever; he keeps students attentive and engaged throughout class which makes for excellent lectures. He is also extremely clear and direct in terms of what he expects for course requirements. If anyone cares for his students it's Darryl. The kindest and sweetest prof
Do yourself a favour and enrol in his courses, they're the only ones that made a strong impression on me throughout my degree. I hope he never stops lecturing because the amount of students he inspires on the daily is innumerable. I wish to be just like him;his courage to speak against the status quo and uncover such truths is great to see in a prof
Most boring prof ever....sleepy. He's not very smart, uses simplistic thinking.
Read directly off of wikipedia or Innocence Canada website for lectures, and then showed a documentary every week. Zero effort put into preparing classes or actually teaching students. One of the least valuable classes I've taken throughout my degree. Easy A though - just read the textbook and watch the documentaries and you'll do fine.
Daryl Davies course was awful, every class was him repeating over and over the same information, and then throwing on a documentary. His style of teaching shows unprofessionalism and just straight up laziness, not to mention there is only a midterm 40% and a final exam 60% with just 6 questions on it. Hopefully you love documentaries!
Provided little to no guidance on the paper worth 40% of our final grade and due to this vagueness most people who I spoke to failed the paper. After the paper was already graded and given back he then decided to explain what he expected from us which was very different to what was described in the rubric and syllabus. TAs also were terrible
