very friendly, smart man, helpful
Had him twice, and try to take every chance I get. Very easy A, without having to buy the book. 3 tests in which he gives you the answers, and 1 five page paper.
Great professor. He gave one quiz, a midterm, a final, and a final paper. The students know exactly what will be on the exam ahead of time. I got an A for attendance, respect, and effort. If you talk in class you Fail.
Great teacher, very clear and knowledgeable on the subject. Knows everyone by name, very polite and helpful and a good sense of humor. Easy to learn from and wont work you to death.
He's cool, really nice. Doesn't like chitter chatter. Easy A, gives you questions to tests beforehand. Wants his class to do well. No papers for Western Civ. 1 students. Again, really nice guy, polite too. Tad bit repetative, but forgivable.
Great Instructor. Good Man. Take Him. One of the top instructors in the History department.
Very cool professor: lots of energy and enthusiasm for the subject, makes tests very straightforward, respects students and wants them to succeed. Could do to be a little more clear at times, but otherwise, a good bet for a fun class.
nice teacher, easy work, somehow i got a B and hardly paid attention. Hes cool.
The best professor in the History department. He has vast knowledge about African History as well as early American History. He is very helpfull and is very fair on his tests and quizes. A must take for a history major at CSUN.
Great teacher. Great person. By far the best professor I've come across. Very clear and knowledgeable.
Great Professor and easy grader. You have midterms and quizzes which are very easy. Very helpful.
Very nice professor. Easy A, all you have to do is show up and class is canceled at least once a month.
Very nice professor and very understanding! Boring as all hell, but definately worth it.
It is an easy class if you just read the book and look up the answers to his essays on your own. His lectures are so varied that you won't learn anything from them. If you want an easy A go ahead and take him. If you want to learn something then you are better off taking someone else.
Very easy, if you go to class. Easy tests, easy finals. Very interesting.
He is an OK professor. I mean his class is pretty easy but he is unorganized, jumps around and isn't clear all the time. He's hard to follow at times. But the tests aren't that hard and I think he is a pretty lenient grader. He is a really nice man though, very friendly.
i have taken 3 classes with this professor and he is one of my favorites. He makes the subject interesting. He is a but unorganized, but can honestly say that we are? I would recommend Dr. Gatlin to anyone and everyone who is interested in black history of any kind
Great preson.
This is by far the best teacher in the history department. He is so cool and he is so passionate about his subject. I have tooken him twice and I only wish i could take him again. Take him if you can!
just 2 tests
Very Helpful.. his lectures are amazing.. and you learn A LOT!!!!!! good person.... very smart .. and knows his material.
in most cases it's either u learn a lot from a class and get a B- or a C, or u don't learn**** and then get an easy A, but for this professor you learn a lot and also get an easy A, take Gatlin u will be a fool not to. he also helps his students to pass the class. very cooooool teacher.
He made my day with his cheerful attitude and his funny personality. If u come to class often u will do well. He gives answers like right before the test. Pet peeves are talkers, he will fail u if u disrupt the class often. But he's a great guy and I reccommend him to everyone.
He's a great professor. Loves to show movies and talk about his past experiences. As long as you take the time to learn the terms on the study guide, you will have an easy A at the end of the semester. He also cancels class at least two or three times a month, so that's also a bonus if you want to take one of his classes.
HE'S THE GRESTEST PROFESSOR YOU'LL EVER HAVE. HE'S VERY UNDERSTANDING. AND WILL HELP YOU IF YOU ASK FOR IT. IF YOU WANT AN A TAKE HIS CLASS

His tests are sooooooooooo easy, its ridiculous. He's a nice man, funny, and everything he talks about he has a passion for. Don't talk though because he will stop his lecture and look u dead in the eyes. Makes you feel real dumb.

gatlin is cool as hell he cancels class when hes sick his sick is considered sneezing he favorite word for the first couple weeks is odavalgurge n austrolupiuthicus n the fulini n if u attended dorsey he loves u but doesnt like u
An absolute nightmare!!! He never showed up to class and his lectures are all over the place. He talked about the Olduvai Gorge and Lucy for the first 2 months! I am a history major and I was completely frusterated with his class. Don't think I'm complaining becasue i got a bad grade. I did get an A but I learned absolutely nothing!
Nice, extremely knowledgable and passionate man but went off on one too many tangents which is a problem in a History class. His grading was sketchy and he clearly had favorites, even admitting as much on the first day.
if you go to class and pay attention, and take advantage of his great study guides there is no way you can't get an A in this class... BUT don't talk during his lectures, this and cell phones ringing are his pet peeves
Very knowledgeable, funny and a nice guy. VERY disorganized, easy essay tests and map quizzes. Misses class alot, best way to get an A is to have a study group. Not a hard class.
awesome teacher, fair grader. if u show up and work, you will get out what u put into the class. very interesting and lively professor. best ive had here at csun
I've taken this professor at least 4 times before and it doesn't matter which class he is teaching he teaches the same way. He doesn't take role, however he does memorize your face and knows who is showing up. His lectures really are all over the place. He is late EVRYDAY and cancels class at least once a week. Easy grader!!
THE BEST PROFESSOR IN THE DEPARTMENT!!!!!I enjoyed his class and learned so much. This Professor VERY intelligent, kind, and he cares about his students. Like him A LOT!!!
great teacher wish he was assigned to the history department instead of PAS makes you work for your grage but is always willing to help you improve
Fountain of knowledge. Is late or misses class often. Somewhat easy class.
Awesome teacher, a very fair grader. There's no way you can't pass his class. Make sure to study everything from the study guide cause its exactly like that on the test. Essay's are very simple.
Very easy class. Extremely interesting professor. He teaches with a straight lecture, no discussion or anything. Still, he keeps it interesting and fun. My class had a midterm, final, and book report, with a few quizes in between. He works with the class and conducts excellent reviews before the two exams.
Very easy A! Only 2 test and they are common sence, and the answers are pretty much on the study guide. A lilttle boring at times but it can be intersting if you really listen. Take this class!
Great teacher, very interesting, reasonable, and animated. Makes the class interesting, fair grading and good review for the tests. Great information.
Very nice teacher must have. Just pay attention and study for midterm and finals. Really helpful highly recomended him.
Dr. Gatlin is very good. Actually show up and pay attention and its an easy class. GO TO CLASS you're grade will suffer if you don't. He enjoys questions. Take good notes, sit in front (he likes that), and put away the phone.he is passionate about the class and wants you to learn. know your study guide and you're good for all the tests.
Come to class, buy the books, ask questions and talk to him after class if you need help. I can honestly say you will get and A. I've taken just about ever class he has offered and got and A. Best professor in my college career and I'm a senior.
very good teacher if you attend classes and get good grades on his midterm and final an A will come easy
He Talks sooo much. But Dr. Gatlin is truly a great professor. Please go to Class becuase he bases part of your grade on attendance. He gives a study guide and that's what you follow in class. Everything that's on his study guides are on the test. Take him. You'll get an A OR B!!!!! Good Luck
Wonderful teacher. I would recommend this class. He loves his job. Very educated. Some of the work I learned in his class I was able to interpret in my other classes. He really pays close attention to attendance so make sure you come daily. No homework 1 midterm and 1 final should be an easy A if u come daily take notes, and pay attention.
To be honest the guy is a clown. Even for Pan African Studies he grades too easy. Also he is a solid ideologue, agree with him and you will get an A. Do not go to class expecting to actually learn something. Good guy to take to fulfil requirements.
This man is a walking encyclopedia....Dr. Gatlin is a genious..."ahaaa!" Not only an amazing professor but also a great person to get to know and i know this because ive tooken almost every class that was offered with him. Takes time to study for his midterm/final;however easy grader
Prof Gatlin is not only a great teacher but also becomes a great friend by the end of the semester. I've taken ever class he's taught and I don't regret doing it. Attendance is not mandatory but he will notice if your not there which will effect your grade. Grade is basically based on the midterm and final which takes studying to get an A.
Because he takes roll, you have to show up. There is no motivation to read the book since his structure is all over the place. To get an A, you have to memorize-wikipedia the answers. If he did not go on tangents about gum arabic and structured the class better, it would of been an awesome class, since he is so passionate about the subject.
Professor Gatlin is amazing. The class was very helpful if you want to know what went on in Africa before and after slavery. He is very well educated. He tends to talk a lot about one thing and does not make it to the next subject. Yet, what he has to say is very interesting. Attendance isn't mandatory but he will notice if you miss too many days!!
By far the best teacher at csun. i highly recommend him.
The level of instruction was similar to that of junior high. Dr. Gatlin spent the majority of the semester teaching the first half of the syllabus and spent three weeks on the latter half. Lectures were semi incoherent due to their rambling nature. If you are interested in the subject matter DO NOT take the class. You won't learn much.
most unorganized professor ever! goes off topic easily, at the end of the class, your knowledge level will be the same, nothing gained from his useless class
I am taking the online class. He seems to have some trouble with the format and using moodle. The lectures are a bit disorganized with a lot of spelling errors. He does not respond to e-mails or give any feedback to students about grades. I have turned in 9 assignments and have not gotten a single grade. There is a lot of writing every week.
This class was online and he wasnt good at using moodle or clarifying his lectures. Essay questions are due every week. He never responds to emails so I've never learned my grade on any assignment. He overall made me not want to take an online class ever again.
Prof Gatlin is extremely passionate about the subject (anything Pan African Studies related). Here's what I did: listen to 70-80% of what he says and did a little review on my own before the midterm and final(basically means googling the topics)and just be respectful, and I got an A in PAS 161. Take his class!
I took this class online. You have no midterm and no final. You answer essay questions once a week and send it in. I was behind like 3 weeks and sent them all in at one time and i still had an A. Just write the essays once a week and you will easily ace the class.
I took him for PAS 161 and PAS 366. If you can keep up with him (and his going off on tangents), then you'll do great. He really knows his stuff and tries to be understanding. I'd take him again!
great professor. I took the online class. and I love him
Dr. Gatlin is seriously one of the most understanding people professors ive meet at csun. He truly cares about his students and offers so much work it makes it hard to fail even if you tried.
This guy is like a living encyclopedia of Africa. He knows every thing there is to know about Africa. We had so many fun discussions in his class. Attendance is not mandatory but he does memorize faces and will know if you were there or not. There is 1 map test, 1 midterm, and 1 final. He is a very friendly guy and I would definitely recommend him.
Professor Gatlin is awesome, I took his online class PAS studies, I wont lie it was a lot of work, reading and essay writing. But it was worth every bit. I learned more from Professor G. than I have in my 47 years of life, he is very kind, supported and knows his stuff. Highly recommend, keep up with your work, you will do well
This class was pretty much pointless. I don't really feel like I learned anything and he tends to go off topic quite a bit. You barely use the books he assigns and even if you do all of the work, he STILL might fail you without any kind of warning. Stay AWAY!
Easy! Funny! Great! EXTREMELY easy A!
1 map quiz, 1 midterm, 1 final. books aren't necessary I didn't learn much, going to class was pointless, I was always on my laptop on netflix. He is very knowledgeable but gets off of topic a lot. Memorizes faces and names, likes when people participate. from the beginning he gives study guides and essay questions, just study and you'll be fine
Good teacher. Class is super easy. One essay, 2 multiple choice test, and two essay test. Do not buy the book it is completely unnecessary. He gives you a study guide. Attendance isn't mandatory.
He says his classes are mandatory but they really aren't.He always goes off subject and gives you study guides prior to all the tests. As long as you study those youll be fine. Text book is really useless and he re uses all his study guides from previous semesters. Lastly he always loses your work and if he does he'll give you an A.
so easyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
If you're looking for a class to simply get an easy A without really learning anything useful, go right ahead and jump on the opportunity to enroll in this class. However and you would not like to have someone who continuously goes on tangents and never stays on topics, don't enroll. Very coo dude dont get me wrong but its not what i was hoping for
He's extremely funny! Barely any homework besides reading which you don't need to do! Just 1 map quiz, a 30 multiple choice question final and a short essay as final! Also one group presentation! I recommend taking this class with this professor! He is very understanding also! Pay attention and you will pass this class 100%
He is a calm person and yes he does go off topic, arrives late or doesn't show up sometimes but if you ask for help or clarity on what he lectures he happily answers any questions. Take notes on everything he writes on the board, it is on the final. The class is basically the final & a presentation, easy A
This man is great but not if you're a Africana Studies major, I would not recommend taking his class. He goes off topic too much...He is a great person overall though. Go to his office hours and give him a chance to match a face to a name...i guarantee you will get an A as long as you remain respectful :)
Prof. Gatlin is old but funny to me at the same time. His class was the easiest. He goes off topic a lot, but you only have 1 midterm (easy essay and 60 multiple choice) and a group presentation for the final.
The class consists of two tests, a midterm and a final, they are both scantron questions and an essay. Get the textbook or you won't pass! Don't worry though, the reading is interesting & Its not expensive. ($12) He does go off topic but he's funny. He'll review before each test and basically tells you the answers, all you have to do is ask!
Very minimal use of the textbook. He explains pretty much all you need to know for the exams in class. He goes off subject a lot. There is a group presentation project towards the semester. He will allow electronic devices in class for googling topics he discusses.
This was a Fri morning class, so he was late for the first few meetings. He goes off subject, but will fill you in on what you need to know for the exams. He shows educational YouTube videos. He takes attendance although everything you need to know is in the book since he will post study guide questions on Moodle.
Dr. Gatlin was phenomenal! He's an encyclopedia, he knows everything about Africa and he's passionate about teaching. He's kind and he always makes jokes. His studyguides are your key to the examsquizzes. Start ahead of time. Great class!
1 introduction assignment, 1 Map quiz, 1 two-part midterm (Multiple choice & essay), 1 two-part final. Attendance is important. He gives guidelines for the tests, study the ones he goes over during reviewlecture. Like to joke around, can get off topic easily, knows his stuff. A lot of reading and studying for the tests.
1 introduction assignment, 1 Map quiz, 1 two-part midterm (Multiple choice & essay), 1 two-part final. Attendance is important. He gets off topic very easily and the class is not structured very well. It's an easy A if you can stick through it!
One of the best teachers. He is easy going & cares about students. Like any class, if you don't do the work you won't pass. A class doesn't need to be brutally stressful and difficult to learn. Students learn what they choose. I've learned a lot from this professor. I rather have the pleasure to learn than being tortured to learn.
Professor Gatlin is seriously one of the best professors I have ever had. He really cares about his students and he makes the topic really interesting. If you do the work on time and show that you care, you should not have a problem getting an A.
I think this was his first time teaching online. Types up lectures for you to read and then gives you questions to right an essay about. Usually only 3 pages long. Really straightforward class. No surprises. Interesting and easy if you pay attention to deadlines.
Great professor very inspirational and has great knowledge of topic
Gatlin was amazing and his knowledge in regards of government was exceptional. Read what he tells you, study, write down what he says, and you'll pass. Don't talk when he's talking. He will either kick you out or walk out.
Gatlin is a decent professor. He lectures a lot, but he mostly goes off topic. He never really gets to the point of his lectures. There was one quiz, one midterm with an in class essay and a final with an in class essay. Honestly, I never took notes, never studied, and never participated, but I almost always showed up to class and passed with a B+.
Professor Gatlin really just looks for participation and effort. Once you make that impression he will remember you and appreciate your efforts as he grades. He will keep you laughing, gives you the exact questions and answers that will be on the test. He does cancel class here and there but he will be fair and push back assignments as needed
Gatlin is an amazing professor, but the sad truth is that a majority of the class don't even show up to class. He is an easy A professor, he gives study guides before every test. You don't really have to pay attention as long as you show up, just to be respectful. I would take him again if I had the chance. I definitely recommend him!
Doctor Gatlin is a treasure trove of information, he's really incredibly intelligent. His class is lecture-based mostly and although attendance and participation aren't huge factors to pass his class there are a lot of advantages to going to them anyway such as extra credit and looking favorably on you by the time grading comes around.
Professor Gatlin is the best. He's very serious about lectures and students. His midterm is exactly the same concept for the final, no tricks or surprises. The great thing is that he provides the class with a study guide both for the midterm and final. A tip is to take notes even if it seems there is nothing to take notes of. I recommend his class.
Very easy class. Lectures are boring, and are not necessary to go to because before the midterm and final, he gives you questions from each chapter and selects 60 questions for the tests. You also have to write a 3-5 page essay on one of the essay topics he picks on both the midterm and final. There is a map quiz in the beginning of the semester.
This can be your easiest A or an easy F since there was only the Midterm, Final, 1 5 minute map quiz, and a 1 paragraph autobiography that was ever graded. Gives you the multiple choice for the mid term and final just study them. Also study 2 of the 6 essay questions he gives you for the midterm. He let us write the essay for the final at home.
Dr. Gatlin was literally a walking history book. He gave open ended and detailed lectures about various time periods, and kept you entertained with lots of jokes. Show up and you will pass.
Charming and hilarious.
Amazing prof most kindest professor I met. Lecture are very heavy you get lost In the lecture. Take note good note cause all of the stuff he say are in the midterm and final.
He get's off topic so easily which is probably why he moves so slowly through the course material. He sticks to his word and provides study guides. He is understanding about his own teaching style. Like if he doesn't go over a certain chapter, then he won't put it on the exam. He's an old guy, so that makes him kind of funny at times. Be patient.
Gatlin is one of the best professors here at CSUN. He is very reliable in terms of answering almost any questions about historical topics, and very cool to talk to. In terms of the classwork, we have about one-two quizzes, a midterm with an essay and scan tron, and final which has the same format. He does get sidetracked, but he reviews the work.
This guy is by far the worst teacher I have ever had during my college experience. He literally can't even make a powerpoint and relies on showing movies and reading wikipedia, what a joke! I can't believe I paid my hard earned money to take this required class I definitely regret it I didn't learn anything. WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY DON'T TAKE!!!!!!
Honestly a great Professor, He truly set us up for success. I agree he does get off topic a bit mainly this semester he would talk heavily on Ukraine and Russia, but if you lead him back (with a relevant question) than he goes right back to it. He referred to a textbook heavily but it's not needed you can find everything online. Most part enjoyed.
Dr Gatlin has a love of history that shows in the way he teaches. I love his passion for the subject matter. He allows his students to have a voice. I like how he was able to ling current events into his lectures.
so many issues that 350 characters can't cover and it sucks cause hes a nice guy. learned basically nothing, rarely stayed on course topics, yet he gave us two 60 question tests, which took him a month to grade. didn't use required books once.. really wish I took something else for my GE requirement, this was a waste of my time, energy and money.
Textbook is helpful for tests, but he doesn't reference it and you can get by without buying it. Attendance not mandatory but he goes over everything you need to know for tests in class. Grade consisted of only a map quiz, and 2 exams (essay and a multiple-choice portion). Lectures all of class and often gets off task but he is very passionate.
This professor was a hot mess. He published the course late, which he also did not have properly set up. He also only spoke to us a total of 4 times in the entire semester. And after the semester ended, he decided to publish assignments. All of which, we were told to look up the answers on Wikipedia. Only got an A because Dean felt bad for us.
I love this professor because he is very caring and funny! He always likes to talk about Mesopotamia and the Secret of Hammurabi's Code in the style of a comedian. He doesn't give us a lot of assignments, but just a very simple map quiz and a three-essay final which he gives us a week after finals to do before Christmas. This is an awesome class!!
