Mr Ogata is one of the best teachers teaching in the Speech field. He mainly discuss the chapters in the book and test are easy if you read the book, very funny and laid back guy.If your looking for a speech teacher he is the one. An sure A if you do the work or extra credit to boost grade.

I loved his class and was sad that it had to end. He's been my absolute favorite teacher at SMC. Taking this class inspired me to change my major to Communication/Speech. He explains everything well. Highly recommended if you want to take Speech, in fact, I recommend you take the class even if you don't need to take it. :)

Darryl can charge people entrance fees for some of his lectures. So funny and still very personable & informative. I haven't laughed that hard even at comedy clubs. I wanted to give him a stand up applause at end of each lecture. One of few professors out there who honestly cares about what you learn and get you motivated to apply it in your life.

He is one of the best professors ever. Speech 1 was the class I feared the most, but it turned out to be a lot of fun. He gets "meaner" every class, LOL. I highly recommend him. I give him an A+. There are three speeches, your last one is considered your final. If you're not giving a speech one day, you are listening to everyone else's speech. Class was a lot of fun, we talked about differences between men and women and had lots of laughs as a class. It seems like you don't need the book the first week, but you need it for studyng tests and reaction papers. One of the most important classes you're gonna take. First week is uncomfortable, pretty crowded class but Ogata is a great guy.

On one the best human beings (and teachers) I've ever met. Kind, considerate, honest, helpful, clear, passionate, & funny. His classes are pretty easy, but I'd recommend showing up and doing all the work anyway because they truly can improve your life. I only wish he taught more courses or had longer office hours so I could drop by more frequently.

Okay This teacher was super hard I had to memorize loads of information. Don't take this teacher if you want to pass. This Teacher is super hard. Loved this class! you will probably end up learning a lot about yourself. Test are somewhat easy you have to do a lot of memorizing but didn't mind because he gives a study guide. The class participates all the time because it's that fun. TAKE IT!!!

I just finished speech 5 class with professor Ogata this summer and, wow I can not say enough about him. The man is one of the most real human being I have ever met in my life. Scholars, its a easy joke class. you can just go up and read your speeches with no eye-contact or facial expressions and get an A in the class. Teacher judges on stereotypes however and is rude sometimes, but overall nice guy. Attendance not mandatory, no book needed.

All the raving for this prof are from fresh out of high school students who don't want to work at all, if you don't care to learn then this class is for you. This could be a super interesting topic and should be engaging but instead you can't talk in class and he talks the whole time about personal stuff which is ok but not for a whole semester

DKO is THE MAN. He is such a wise professor and his lectures are very interesting. Although they can get long, I recommend that you listen. He knows what he is talking about. This was my favorite class! He's hilarious and you'll love his class :) I learned a lot about interpersonal comm & please don't try to be sneaky and cheat your way out.. he knows, trust me. Dont be late because he takes off points! And he gives out study guides so just study that - his exams are JUST like the study guide (same order & everything)

I took Ogata last winter, and it was great. I've never met such a genuine professor until i met him! I was afraid of taking his class because i'm not much of a 'public speaker' but i loved it. He is by far one of the best professors Santa Monica has to offer. Take him! You will enjoy his class ! BEST CLASS EVER.

Professor Ogata is amazing. I recently took him this summer 2015 for Communication Studies 11. He gives great advice, pushes you to be better and wants you to make the effort to bettering your self. Prof. Ogata is one of the most inspirational instructors at SMC. Before I took speech with him, I was so afraid of public speaking. But he did such an amazing job at class so that not only public speaking doesn't seem scary any more, but also I feel completely confident to do it in my current classes. Taking him is a MUST at SMC before transfer!

Very mindful and has great insight and very relatable with anyone. His class gets off topic, but in the best way while still learning about theories and concepts. I never spoke in class, but my reflection papers made him notice me as a person. Just be mindful and be specific when taking test/finals and you'll do fine! TAKE HIM!

Great Professor

He is a genuinely nice person. His lectures are interesting so you'll stay awake. Uses his family/wife as examples all of the time. He'll write you a letter of rec cause he truly cares for his students (even if he doesn't always get along with them) study guide is super helpful & if you have a study group, even better! Take him for any class u can!

Semi-easy A. Offers plenty extra credit. Tests require memorization and a detailed answer/explanation. Gives you the test beforehand -- study guide is formatted the same way you will receive the test, order of questions and everything. Nice professors, goes on a tangent, but somehow always relates it to the class. A very sweet man.

Nice guy. Tries to connect with students. I would suggest going to his office hours a day or two before giving a speech, that way he can critique you before going in front of the class and to work on your quirks. If just try, you'll get an A. If you don't try you'll be kicking yourself because if was suppose to be an easy A lol

Professor Ogata is great at what he does, YES HE'S AN EASY A BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO WORK HARD. According to him the final really makes people loose their A. His class is so "easy" because he really loves his job and makes it his responsibility to not push you into learning something but giving you the tools to figure it out yourself.

He gives interesting debate on some topics from different speeches. He is really funny and cares about students. If you show up and put in effort you will do well.

Professor Ogata is not like any other professor. He is the most funniest and caring man I've ever encountered. 3 speeches that include an outline and has an option of extra credit which I recommend doing. Fairly easy grader. Overall a class and professor I will never forget.

His lectures are so much fun and easy to understand, he is very relatable which makes it easier to understand the concepts of the class.

He is one of the best human beings who understand his students. Even though his class was not though, I learned a lot and obtained so many communicational tools for my life. I highly recommend to take his class and if it was full he is more than generous to add you when you show up for first few weeks. You can learn a lot of ethical lessons also.

Professor Ogata is amazing. I came into his Comm St 11 Speech class scared but he explained the entire process clearly. He gave us advice on overcoming public speaking anxiety and how to write and deliver an effective speech. He was always positive, warm, and welcoming. I hope I can take another one of his classes! The man is a legend. No but seriously, he really is an amazing person/professor. He is always willing to help you if you ask, he likes to give great feedback on speeches, and is very clear on what he expects from you. Just do the work and put some effort into it and I promise you public speaking is going to become so much easier.

A lecture based class. He is the best teacher Ive had at SMC. Very funny and loves to talk about his family as examples during lectures. I took him for winter and honestly I really did enjoy his class. Youre mainly graded on tests so study!!! He offers a lot of easy extra credit as well. Take him!

Ogata is the absolute best. Easily one of the most genuine and caring professors at SMC. He's great at what he does. The class is extremely straightforward and he's not a tough grader at all. Just follow his outline structure for the speeches, show up, and you're fine. You only somewhat use the book for the midterm and final.

I took professor Ogata during Winter 2018 for Communication Studies 11. He is very easy. Mainly the whole semester is on 3 speeches. No homework. Don't need to study for the final just listen to the lectures. NO TEXTBOOK required. He gets distracted a lot.

It is very easy to get an A in his class because he gives extra credit opportunities and he gives you the questions for the midterm and exam. What an amazing person and professor he is.

This class was a great experience. Coming from someone who has severe fear of public speaking, this class was very easy. Graded based on few speeches outline+presentation, midterm and final (study guides provided!) most of the classes are just listening to speeches, if you show up and make sure to pay attention he will notice!

If you're planning on taking any of his classes, you have to be ready on the day of enrollment to add because that's how fast his class fills up. I've taken him for both Com.11 & Com.35 and he's amazing in both. Gives you a study guide for exams. He isn't afraid to say whats on his mind. The class is always laughing. Take him if you can!

Great lecturer, cares about students. Free textbook. Weekly personal write-up assignments. I failed all three exams and but got A's on HW, did the extra credit, and still got 96 in the class. Very simple course that is useful. Super tough grading on exams but inconsequential if you do the rest of the work and don't cheat. Definitely recommend

Ogata is the man! He would tell you on the first day of class to not be in a relationship with anyone and is brutally honest. He is a true gem because nobody else is as blunt as he is. The course is sooo interesting and students would participate because of the many controversial topics being discussed. On top of all of this, an Easy A.

Prof. Ogata is amazing. He is there to help you EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. He'll help you grow as a person and as a student. All you have to do is to show that you care, make YOUR best effort, and he'll know, you can't full an experience professor on that. Attend class (zoom), ask questions. If you don't get an A with him, IT IS YOUR FAULT ALONE.

Such a great professor. Values education over grades, a 80% is considered an A. Graded by a few reflections, and always gives the best response to your reflection. Very caring and extremely interesting.

You have to try pretty hard to not get an A in this class. One weekly 1 page personal experience essay and 3 essay question tests. The weekly papers are completion points and if you do all of those+ get at least a 30 on the tests you'll get an A. Go to office hours and the weekly discussion, it will help you in the long run.

Easy professor. A genuinely nice and unforgettable guy who says a lot of funny, sometimes controversial stuff in his lectures that make class time entertaining and worth it. The extra credit opportunities make this course an easy A. The midterm was relatively difficult but the final was extremely easy. He is very helpful in his office hours.

Ogata was an amazing professor and had hilarious lectures. Although I wouldn't say public speaking is my strong suit, I managed to complete the class with a 90.1%... So if you aren't ready to put in the work or attend his lectures, this class ain't for you.

10/10 would recommend! I'm taking prof. for winter semester, and the work is light, one reaction paper (1 page min.) per week and offers extra credit. He provides the textbook for free. His lectures are interesting, and he's very kind and understanding. You'll definitely learn a lot from him.

He is good man, he understands that his students have lives too unlike other professors at smc who like to take their anger out on people by giving them impossible to pass test. his work is easy if you paid attention. I wish more professors were like him.

Professor Ogata is the best teacher I have taken considering most GE's are tougher classes than electives. Take him if you know you are for sure going to transfer to 4 year college. I had a 102 or 103% after my second paper / speech. I took professor Ogata during the 6 week winter session.

Professor Ogata was amazing. He really went into detail in each lecture and was understanding that students have other stuff to balance out. This class was really interesting too and taught me a lot about the importance of communication. TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!

This class was great because you can get so much extra credit for each speech. Even if you don't do too well on the speeches you'll be fine if you do the extra credit. Just make sure to do the outline exactly how he wants it because he can be a bit of a tough grader for those. Overall, good class and I Liked that we got to choose our speech topics.

Professor Ogata was amazing! Well-structured course with clear grading criteria. LOTS of extra credit opportunities if you complete all of them you technically wouldn't even have to take the final to achieve an A. Lectures were interesting and the assignments weren't rigorous. Highly recommend taking his class:)

Took him during the winter and he was pretty cool! He provides good instructions for his speeches and his rubrics are clear. This class wasn't hard at all. He's lenient with late work, does knock some points off but better than nothing. He gives good feedback on speeches too. You get to pick what topics you choose for your speeches so that's fun.

I took COM ST 11 with Ogata during the Spring semester. He is incredibly empathetic and caring of all students. I not only became a more confident public speaker, but I finally learned how to outline an essay properly (which helped me in all my other writing assignments in different classes). I highly recommend you attend his weekly discussions!

Easy speech class offers 10 points extra credit for each speech, a bit picky about the format of his outline but very manageable A. Midterm gets graded pretty toughly and class average was a 65%. allows all speeches to be turned in late and is fair grader. Good professor to take for igetc/csu ge course

Professor Ogata loves teaching and it shows. His lectures are interesting and he makes it applicable to your own life. Watch the lectures, complete the assignments on time and you will do great in this class. I highly recommend this class to anyone who is working on becoming their best self.

Prof. Ogata is by far the greatest SMC prof. I took him for both COM 11 and 35. Attend the optional zooms and office hours and he will see you are putting in effort. Gives a lot of advice and is very honest. Easy A if you do the work and put in the effort. Also, he is a great conversationist and is fun talking to.

Go to his office hours bc he'll review your outline before you submit and record your speech. There's 3 speeches/outlines. He offers easy EC that can add up & boost your grade, take advantage! Professor Ogata is very helpful. There are four projects and two tests the entire semester so it is easy to be forgetful. I recommend attending his online meetings and reading his weekly announcements as he explains exactly what he wants. He is flexible as long as you are honest with him and he answers pretty quickly. I highly recommend this class!

A pretty easy A especially with the extra credit. I found Professor Ogata to be kind of picky with his grading sometimes but gave good feedback to help improve your score next time. Attend the office hours to get help with your assignments as he'll review before you submit and help with any changes.

Professor Ogata's online class was a bit difficult for me at first, but the office hours were extremely helpful in receiving feedback for my speeches and also going over key points in his lectures. He is very helpful and his rubrics are very clear; I liked that we were able to pick a topic we liked for all our speeches too!

Ogata is one of the Best Communications professors at SMC. Assigns one assignment a week based on watching the weekly video. Exams are the same as the classwork. Work is accepted up to a month late for full credit (except exams). I suggest Professor Ogata to you if you're a communication major or need a communication course.

At first I got really bad scores (9/35) and honestly he is really particular with the way you write. Once I went to office hours and he explained everything I would get As and 100%. If I took the class again I would go to his office hours and make sure everything I wrote is up to his standards. He is also really nice, I learned a lot from him.
