Repeats the same things over and over but in different ways. He explains things well. Follow his format for the homework questions on tests otherwise you won't do well on the tests. Overall a good course, it was definitely worth while.

Went in, taught, went out didnt bother helping. If tried asking for help or clarification will lecture you on how you should have listened in class instead and then tell you to go away. Hard as nails, class final average-more then 50% failed. Avoid

Everybody that fails Smith's class either didnt do the required homework or didnt bother to pay attention in class. I find Smith better than most teachers although he does get off topic A LOT, he teaches very well, if you pay attention you'll do good.

Very unhelpful, wont answer your questions. Cannot use the tools he is supposed to teach to us (SPSS). Explains a theory then tells us we dont need to know it, and if we use it, we will be wrong. Many reasons for the QMS204's consistent 40%+ failure rate.

Do the homework from the beginning and you'll be fine. Do it like he says and you'll be fine casue he can be picky. He's alright, but he can be a bit of a jerk sometimes. Tips: Don't sit at the front of the class and don't ask stupid questions.
He does teach well and provides good notes, but it isnt worth it. Take this course at night. On tests, he'll look for any way possible to take off marks. I am happy I made it through his class, but if I had to do it all over again, I would skip Smith
Helpful and explains well but he is a EXTREMELY HARD MARKER! cuts marks for mispelled words, extra decimal, minute errors, etc. He said it himself 'even if your answer is correct and solution is wrong you get a zero'.

Listen to his instructions VERY carefully and you should do well in his course. If you can mimic his style of answers then you will not have any problems. Intimidating to ask him questions in class, but if you see him during office hours he is very helpful. Effort is needed to do well in his course.

He is a VERY picky marker, and his lectures are all over the place so you dont know what he is talking about. If you do the work, you will get a decent grade.
Passed the class with flying colours, however; without any help from him whatsoever. He is a terrible teacher with very poor teaching methods and is not helpful at all.
I got A+ with no help from him. He's deaf, and he has these old-fashioned methods for teaching concepts...it helped that I took this course in high school.

Anyone who is complaining about Smith obviously didn't do their work. His notes are really good so even if you don't quite understand what he's saying, all you have to do is look the notes over, do what they say and you'll understand. He is a good prof though. The course load isn't even that heavy.

At first I didn't like him, but if you pay attention and do your homework, you'll be fine. He's better if you confront him in his office. Also, if you took Data Management in High School and did well, you should find this course easy!
If you meet with him outside the classroom, he will help you as much as possible, but don't confront him during a lesson...you'll be in for an unpleasant surprise. Hard marker!

Better prof during office hours than during class. Intimidation is his preferred teaching style which for the most part doesn't work (unless you like condescending comments). Do the homework and try do your best to understand the material and you should be ok.

Very easy course, he'll treat you like a 5 year old, but don't be afraid to stand up to him. I'll take him an hour to get a single point across because he'll repeat it over and over again, after which you just want to punch him. Just going to class will get you at least 70%.
I learned only one thing from him. If you ask him a question which he doesn't like to answer, then the reply as follows; "In my 35(?) years teaching career, nobody asked me a question like this before..."
Terrible professor. I can see how more than half the class usually fails or drops the course. If you want to avoid him - do so ! You're guaranteed to get at least 30% higher.

He can be a bit mean (he asked a girl how she got to university without being able to factor). Just have a good sense of calculus, and don't ask dumb questions.
An intelligent man, however, he is a horrible professor. He rarely puts notes on the board and when he does you cannot read it off the board. In addition, when you ask a question you are told "in 35 years of teaching i have never heard something like that"-Take the course but with another prof.
This course is extremely easy but the teacher is an ass when it comes to marking. For example, for one page of the midterm, i got every question right but got a 5/14 because i put "too many" decimals or i didnt add an equal sign (why would u when its fill in the blanks??) Your 1st quiz mark will be your overall mark for the course.

I don't know why we have to use his error-filled "text book". The book is disorganized and muddled and does not give answers to many key questions (and when it does they are often wrong). If you want to learn how to do things right, take his classes. Students can't seem to appreciate his no-**** attitude. Students who give him 1s are those who have grown fat and lazy when it comes to learning. Grow up, kids.

Very boring prof, but he goes into great detail for most topics. Major flaw is that there is no answers in the book so you don't know if you're doing your homework correctly or not. Extremely helpful outside of class.
If you are taking Bus Stats because you have to get another prof. If you’re taking it because you want the teacher who wrote the text to teach you, he’s the one. He's a tough teacher, doesn't speak loud enough and will take every opportunity to belittle you. Also, beware of what you ask him. He has a tendency to go on half hour tangents.
Bad prof- like 6/60 students passed his course this term, the material itself is easy- but he's an extremely arrogant and painful marker- even if you know u know the stuff, he'll still undermine you by giving you F's when you deserve C's! Darryl Smith is perhaps one of the most intelligent professors Ryerson can be proud to have hired. He gives you everything you need to know in lecture. Everyone gives him a bad name but they have to blame only themselves because they're just lazy idiots who can't be arsed with listening or DOING THE WORK! All in all, he is a very good professor.
His textbook is absolute garbage. He needs the money but I don't know why? Isn't he getting enough from Ryerson for fulfilling his quota to fail students? This book has more errors in it than knowledge. You will learn more about Probability and Stats from a Grade 10 class than his class. DROP THE PROF and SWITCH

He really is a very intelligent professor but he makes his students feel stupid by harshly critizing you in class. If you take his class, remember to follow closely his rules and templates he shows otherwise he penalizes heavily you in quizes and tests. On a brighter note, if you talk to him during office hours he's actually very nice and helpfull.
the material is supposed to be easy but he makes up a thousand rules that u have to follow or else he'll deduct marks for not doing it *his* way. quite annoying that is. always late to class. an hour tutorial turns into half an hour cause he's never on time, not even for midterms.
STAY AWAY FROM DARRYL SMITH. He is a huge jerk. He makes qms even harder than it should be with his stupid rounding rules and rigorous hard marking. Not a good prof. Will help you if you see him in his office but don't even try to ask something in class. oh and don't expect to pass by actually knowing the material. You lose basically all your marks unless you do it EXACTLY how he wants it. decimals and all.
He knows what he is talking about, and he knows how to teach. He just doesn't have the time or the patience to put up with all you idiots playing video games in the back row. If you are serious about this class, you don't need to switch out.

Most people will tell you how bad of a prof he is. In my opinion, he's just a straight-forward no Bs kind of prof. Do the homework, do the work his way and you can ace the course. The actual course load it light. It takes practice to get the material. I don't recommend asking stupid questions in class. Seeing him outside of class is helpful.

I don't find the text book helpful at all there are equations such as Q3 without definitions and answers to problems without explaining how they were arrived at. The class is rushed and not explained with the expectation to just "get it"

Apparently to Darryl Smith, a math class really isn't a math class. Instead of learning the function of the equations being thought, we are told to use an incompitent program (SPSS), that can't even do basic mathematical calculations properly. Study SPSS & know the steps, don't ask questions in class (or he will ridicule you). You are all warned.
Im not wasting time on this filth but I'll say this, this professor makes me cry. He makes me wish someone would stone me to death on the way to his lectures. I will never be the same. Shame on you.

This was my first year at Ryerson. He is the most approachable professor. If you do your work, and see him in his office when you have questions, you will learn to love this class. The professor is very knowledgable and passionate about the subject. And trust me, when I say he is straightforward, HE IS!! He knows his stuff.
I think some of you just do not like his frankness. Actually he is a nice professor and explain clearly. A real and rare math jenius! But you have to do your work because he likes the students who are good at his class just as every professor.

He can come off a bit rude, but he knows his stuff really well. He's much nicer if you see him one-on-one during his office hours. It helps to have some background already in whatever course he's teaching you. but you can do well otherwise.

Drop this class, If your in ITM you CAN take qms102 with hassan mayaloo or claire chua...it is equivelant, you can still get co-op with qms102. Mickey Mouse has a more consistent grading method. How do you get 50% on a midterm when you did all the homework and then some! Never gives part marks and subtracts marks for even the littlest errors (ie rounding!).

His teaching methods are very oldschool. NO powerpoint, writes everything on the board and in a messy style. Though he does try explain things, he often faces away from the students ( Boared or wall) or can't hear when someone oen is asking for clarification. Try to take Stats with someone else if you can, other wise work really hard.
He knows his stuff, but once he wrote it on the borad, they all turned out to be messy. In his class, you have to listen to his words carefully. coz he has so many rules on the assignment and exam. ppl plz stop talking at the back!!!!!! what the weird thing is, he is always nice in his office. So dun hesitate to meet him in his office.

he rate himself, all the good rating are done by him. all in cluster. terrible prof. spend 30min out of the entire term teaching us the final exam format (different from all other tests)
insults you in class,telling people to shut up and "this is a stupid question.." not clear is to what is expected, too demanding, you have to clearly hang on to his words and attend the class to pass the course
I had his early morning class. He parks his car @ Pitman and is late for his 9am classes. For the exam, we had to use our laptops but in the last minute he swapped rooms w/o a notice. Sarcastic and deaf in one ear, does not use mic so sit @ front if you really want to hear what he talks about. Always @ office hrs so if u've got qs, ask him then!
I'm honestly sick of reading negative comments about Darryl Smith. I think he has been the best prof I have had at Ryerson so far. Yes the material is difficult, but he explains it very well. Bottom line, Darryl Smith IS NOT a bad prof, the majority of students just think their final grade relates to the profs ability to teach.
DARRYL SMITH = THE MAN, THE LEGEND...I will forever respect this guy as a teacher...take him, and you'll have some good laughs

Finally, see some fair comments. This professor is nice at his action, not at the words from the mouth.
He's not a bad guy on a personal level, but he should learn how to use the computers so EVERYONE knows how the SPSS works.
hes kind of funny... i havent had a midterm from him yet so i dont know how hard it will be... he doesnt do well at explaining things.. he talks for about 10 minutes about a concept and them says "but you dont need to know this, that was just for your interest." his intentions are good though and his quiz was ez if u study
Out of Date Prof, Smith does not use any of the resources available 2 him, such as the overhead, and the projector so when hes teaching SPSS, he looks over someones shoulder & the rest of the class needs to be listening to get the steps to use it. Deaf in one ear, often will insult the class for not asking him questions but he should b teaching.
He is NOT a good prof. He may know what he's talking about, but he can't make you understand it. You'll be wasting your precious time and money on him. He may not be a bad person, but his demeanor will not help your learning in class because he keeps discouraging everyone.
The only way to succed in this mans class is to arrive on time, which everyone will do as hes always late, and sit and pay attention and sit at the front since he doesnt use a mic, and always do the work, if you dont you are screwed so bad. He might be allright but can be a b****, and the course is hard if you dont take the initiative to understand
This guy is a sucker. Don't expect to get an A in his class if you are not bright.
Contrary to the majority of the comments here, I found Darryl Smith to be a straightforward, clear and easy teacher. Just go to class, listen and take notes. He'll give you everything you need to pass the course. I'm willing to bet that those who gave negative comments were the ones playing games/IMing/etc... in class!
Why not? I got an A+ from his class. Clear lecture and never make hard on tests. What else do you expect on a professor? By the way, I didn't study that hard on his class because everything for me is very clear from his lecture! Do what is supposed to do as a student, not just complain. Period!!
His teaching style is old fashioned, and notes can get a little messy. But he is very straight forward and clear. As long as you do all the homework each week you will be fine in his class. If you got questions, don't ask in class..you will be humiliated!!! Go see him in his office to ask questions, he is an extremely nice guy out of class.
Attendance mandatory if you want to pass. See him after class, he is VERY nice and helpful about EVERYTHING (project included, start early or face the crowd). Pay attention even if it's hard to. Do all of the work and keep up ALWAYS. Very hard marker (sig dig, format, etc count), hard course and needs a LOT of effort. Just give him a chance.
Very straight forward and apprehensible during the lecture. Should be able to ace this course as long as you do every questions being asked and know where the mistakes often occurred. The only things needed to watch out for are rules like significant digit, formulas, etc.

Nice guy on the inside, but not very good when it comes to teaching. The whole course revolves around using SPSS yet he does not show you how to use it. You can try to learn it yourself but you probably still won't get a very good mark. He has very specific requirements when answering questions. FOLLOW THEM DIRECTLY OR EXPECT TO LOSE MARKS.
Prof Smith is not clear, does not care. Grade harsh, and most learning I have done from his marking. He did not teach us well, and then graded harsh, so we just learned from one exam to the other, and that is the reason I have got 85 on my final after semester with mostly 60's. AVOID IF POSSIBLE!!!!!
DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASSES!!! DROP THE COURSE AND TAKE IT DURING THE SUMMER WITH OTHER PROF. Prof Smith is nice BUT lousy teacher. DONT EVEN TRY

This is the worst prof ever, he knows what he's talking about but he DOES NOT know how to teach. It's hard to read his writing, he'll get mad if you ask questions in class and when i went to his office he said 'thats not my problem'. He's NEVER clear about what hes teaching. Seriously best decision of your life is to switch out of his class.
He thinks he is better than the textbook. Deaf and has memory problem. Does not want to wark in the class. You will have to do everything and he will only answer if you have any question. Exams are harder. Give assignments with wrng data and doesn't wanna accept that that he makes a lot of mistake. He does not want students to pass.
He can teach hes just wayyyyyyyyyyy to picky with format.. if you leave out anything he'll take off soo many marks.. i do everything right and yet im still failing
Here is the key to this class: pay attention in class and DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Trust me on this. I did OK on the 2 midterms, but the exam was super hard. Luckily, I think he belled it up so I went from an A- to an A+. People say he's hard, but I think he's a softy deep down. One more bit of advice: have EVERYTHING on your cheat sheet on your exam
the best thing about this prof is that he is crystal clear in his explanations. oh, he also bumped our final grades too. i'd say each of his tests have only 1 question that is tricky. i got an A in his class. just some tips.. dont miss any classes. do the homework he assigns. follow his problem solving method to the tee. i would recommend him. :)

graphinc calculator not necessary for class, but he only shows us how to use that. was too lazy to show us manually. seems un-interested in your learning. very cocky. class was yelling at him post midterm becuase of how unfair it was.

A great teacher!!I understand why some people may not like him. If you ask stupid questions, he will critisize you and if u don't pay attention in class you will get screwed. He goes over hmk as much as the class wants, and will show you the exact format he wants on tests.His tests are very fair, and directly from class work ,normally a hard app.q
Whoever said hes a good profs lying. His evaluation for tests do not fairly evaluate a student's understanding of material. So if you do get him, pay close attention to answer presentation: it matters more than the answer itself. He communicates poorly, writes messy, comes to class late, doesn't use blackboard/powerpoint; so go to class sit close
Go to class and Listen! very good professor, choose this guy over other stats profs.
he is extremely misunderstood. i thought he was a bad prof too because I came into uni as a punk highschool kid. after bombing the midterm i did every question in his book... killed the final finished with an A.. hes a softie at heart I know he bumped me. He can be rude but its because he knows people aren't doing their homework. mark = effort here
He didn't really teach much other than always talking about himself and his businesses. He had to make every student present at the end of the year just to cut every presentation short because he wants to go home early. The only good thing about his class was when he gave out a free beer after the last class from his bar by Ryerson.
