I thought this class was very interesting and I really like his approach.
Great class - a pleasure even on Saturday Morning.
I was struck by his casual approach to teaching which can be viewed as unprofessional. Not helpful at all and insists on his students getting help from peers. Interesting class although he talks about his own restaurant chain way too much. No textbook made class attendance mandatory.
Awesome Prof, great teaching style, great entrepreneur with lots of useful advice and cool stories. Very cool guy overall.
Darryl is a pretty good professor who brings a lot of real world experience to the classroom. Some of his ideas are a little forced but overall he will make you think before you ask a dumb question. I enjoyed the course A LOT MORE than I thought I would have after attending his classes.
Daryl is great. I like how he relates most lessons to his business, showing us how these lessons work in the real world. Yes he went to school to become a business prof, but he also has real life experience from owning his own business. Very interesting person and very accommodating.
great guy. interesting lectures.. easy marker.. no tricks.. knows what he is talking about.. great public speaker.. def recommend
Awesome professor, I really enjoyed his lectures and his midtermexam was really fair. I would definitely recommend him.
Interestig class. Lots of real life discussion
Great prof, young dude who's self made. Textbook is not required, his slides have everything you need. Just 2 midterms, and a final. I know the day class has an assignment, but in Chang school it didn't. Real world businessman, who knows what you need in real life.
great guy, made this class exciting. Even though no textbook is required he provides real life examples making concepts easier to grasp and apply. midterm was exactly as he explained no tricks. Final was also fair watch out for the metrics but he also once again explains why.
His lectures are interesting because he refers to real life examples. He doesn't use the textbook a lot and gives useful life tips that can motivate you to do better in life. I wouldn't say his exams are easy but you will do well if you study smart.
Although he has the intentions of being a good prof, I find his take on teaching to be extremely casual. I would pull out my notebook to take notes but in the end have barely a page taken down. He skims through stuff he finds less important and emphasizes his own business and certain material only. Leaving you a little confused in the end.
Daryl is an amazing Professor that is passionate about what he teaches. It was a pleasure to attend his lectures. The midterm was easy as long as you can do the metrics. Final was more difficult, watch out for that! He isn't very responsive to emails and is a very hard person to reach. No textbook, and his slides are useless so that's a drawback
He is a great prof! His exams are really easy and he is an easy marker on projects and assignments! Got a A with minimal studying
He is hard to reach through email since he owns his own business. Review his slides other than that he is an easy prof! Can get a high mark in his class. Better than all the other MKT profs! Compared to the other MKT profs you can get a high mark in his class
If you can get into his class DO IT. He is one of the best MKT profs at Ryerson. His midterm was very easy and so was his final. This prof will give you a free 10%. He gives over 85% on the projects. MAKE SURE YOU ENROLL IN HIS CLASS AS IT IS A GPA BOOSTER.
Daryl is hands down the best prof at Ryerson! He's young, hip, funny and just a great guy! I learned so much from him, he's a young entrepreneur and really has a lot of knowledge to give over. Take any class he's teaching!
His mid term was a joke final was tough
two words: looooooooove him
try to get as much marks in midterm as possible the final is a bit confusing the project find a good group or else you know what will happen. 10 marks free when you do the matrix in class every time you come.
Midterm was easy. Final was a little harder. Knows his stuff, very inspirational. Project was somewhat of a tough marker but overall a great class. Matrix an easy 10% for free as well !
not sure if he is teaching about marketing or marketing his restaurant...
He's a salesman teaching you about sales, what's not to like? He uses real world examples to explain the textbook concepts. Assigned an interesting group project that was fun, fair grading on that. Midterm and exam were both fair, highly recommend taking his class because his experience can't be learned in a textbook
He is the most chill and flexible prof who promotes his restaurant all class. The midterm was easy but exam metrics was somewhat difficult. If you are a a-b+ student he will give you 100% in the end for metrics but just in-case your attendance is necessary for most of the classes. focus on his slides and you will get an A
One of the worst profs lol. All he does is talk about his business. He justifies it by saying he tries to give you real life examples but they dont help. He never goes in depth in terms of the content. Slides are long and in lecture theres no breaks. Smh...
Solid choice, especially if you're thinking about pursuing marketing in your degree. His lectures are filled with his very relevant experiences within his work. He really likes to encourage other students to pursue opportunities and apply for something they are passionate about, connect and look for meaningful referrals in which he did help me out
Honestly one of the best profs, he gives real life examples and prepares you for the future. I learned so much without even realizing. An amazing experience taking his course.
He's beyond extraverted which you can't tell from his appearance. Loves talking about his experiences whether it's from his restaurant to past jobs/careers. His lectures are SUPER long. Never got a break but there were multiple opportunities to leave early. Also very sly (taught a lecture before collecting an assignment to trap us).
Show up and pay attention to what he is saying and take notes outside of class - simple as that
Daryl is a very good professor and mentor, he cares about his students and goes out of his way to make sure they achieve success in his class. He has a restaurant and often offers coupons for good food. If you ever take him ask him about his restaurant, he will give you coupons - no joke Overall very good prof and I would take him again!
He is a great teacher. He really wants his students to do well in the course and puts in the effort to help. Would defiently recommend to future students!
Great prof! Pay attention and you'll do well!
Honestly one of the best professors I had. His lectures are clear and helps you in the real world. He cares for his students and wants the best for their future. If your bad at MC test he gives amazing tricks and techniques so I would 100% recommend him.
Honestly the best prof I have ever had. His lectures tie in course concepts with his real life experience, which makes it simpler to understand concepts. He not only helps his students succeed inside the classroom but also takes the time to help students understand how to be successful in the real world. I always look forward to his lectures.
Spent more time talking about his restaurant then teaching the subject matter. Somehow he was surprised that students didn't pick up his knowledge by osmosis. Overall a bird course to pass, but will ruin your GPA if you are looking for an A.
Honestly, he is a good prof in terms of understanding students. However, he talks about his restaurant too much. Also, his "real life ex" might be interesting to young students but not for students who already have a job. His lecture goes on until 9:30 PM b/c he doesn't manage class time right. Never replies email.
Take Daryl's class if you love to learn with stories and real life experience. That is what he offers, and it actually helps a lot of students understand concepts easily. He's very straightforward with the marking structure and how to prepare to get an A. Overall great prof!
In order to do well, you should attend classes, this helps pinpoint which information is important and will be tested on. I enjoyed how he only tests on general knowledge and doesn't make you memorize every little detail. He makes classes interesting with current examples and it was overall a great course.
- super awesome guy - no bs, straight to it, no babysitting - difficult to study because he doesn't use the textbook - record your lectures to help retain given info - Final and Group project will wreck your life, be wary - Uses pwrpnt 100+ slides little info - MEMORIZE EVERYTHING (he says "just understand", but that won't cut it) -METRICS
Great prof, really knows his stuff and uses examples with his personal life. Very funny guy and makes lectures enjoyable. Go to lectures or the slides won't make as much sense. Easy final project, just be straight to the point - no fluff, no bs. Marks by the criteria given which is very specific
The worst prof I've ever had to deal with. Only talks about himself and his own business, is really self-centred, and will absolutely let you know that he DOES NOT CARE. Is unaccessible for office hours, and then makes no accommodations when students need his help. Doesn't respond to emails, doesn't give real answers, and is literally terrible.
He is a great teacher! The class is fun and the way he teaches is perfect with the real life examples he gives for almost every topic.
He's just beauty. Lots of interesting things to say about marketing and definitely has first-hand experience when it comes to the subject. He has a genuine passion for the subject and is totally willing to talk to students about pretty much anything.
Great prof, took MKT100 with him as well. He provides real life examples with fair tests. Also helped me by connecting me with job opportunities I was seeking through his network, really went out of his way to help! Definitely take the course with him, especially if you're a marketing student.
Great professor who puts a lot of emphasis on being pragmatic with business and marketing. He goes the extra mile to ensure that not only people understand the concept, but know how to apply it in the real world. Best class Ive ever taken, would highly recommend this professor. Ryerson needs more professors like him!
Daryl is a character and truly likeable! His stories are great and help to make the world of marketing relatable. BUT, when he says you don't need the textbook, don't believe it for a second. Almost all midterm and final exam questions were straight out of the textbook, not his slides or stories. Engage with him in class, but study the textbook!!!!
One of the most chill profs at RU. Keeps it real with students and gives his personal sales experience. In addition he treats his students to a drink every now and again at his restaurant. Just feel lucky if you get him.
What really matters is that you learn something from a class. And I feel that every class with Daryl, he shares real life stories and advice from personal/professional experiences. He really cares about students succeeding not just in the course but in real life. Too bad I'm about to graduate otherwise I'd try to get every MKT course with him.
Inspiring and caring professor! He doesn't only teach course concepts, but he relates them to real life and the professional/entrepreneurial world. Very motivating and honest! I would take every MKT class with him if i could!
This instructor is so interesting to listen to and learn from he is very experianced and knows about the course inside and out. He is very informative and clear while explaining and will make sure you understand before moving on. Love his teaching style and view on life. Always makes class interesting with funny/ personal experiences.
Prof D'Souza gives clear examples of marketing principles in real life. Engaging and opinionated as good profs ought to be.
If you're someone who prefers professors who do not follow text books and rather teaches the course from their own knowledge and experience, then he is your guy! His stories of personal experience with the corporate world made it easy and interesting to study about marketing. attend his class regularly and go through his slides-Easy A.
Memorizing definitions from the textbook won't make you smarter. This teacher will teach you real-life marketing examples that you won't forget. He has years of real-life marketing experience
I had Daryl for MKT100 as a first year student. He is very knowledgeable and absolutely hilarious!! His course doesn't require the textbook either. He gives easy marks if you show for the metrics every lecture and teaches in a way so that the course material will stick. His lectures are overall entertaining, not boring at all! Thank you Daryl!
He's probably one of the best professors ever because he's so engaging, funny, and knowledgeable. His teaching breaks the norms of regular slide read offs as he shares personal experiences and engages you with stories instead. A fair and easy marker-the weekly metrics are for participation but group project is marked harder. Exams are very fair!
A class for people who wake up everyday and want to do something with their life.
Daryl is a very intelligent and great guy. His classes are for people who want to learn more than what the course offers. You can learn a lot of real life lessons from Daryl, who details great experiences with good humour. Absolutely recommend any of his classes!
Exactly what a prof should be. He practices what he preaches through his own business and everything he teaches is practical. He is willing to help his students and truly wants them to succeed. If you are taking MKT100 or want to major in marketing, find some way to get into his class even if it means sacrificing a day off. Best prof ever!
Probably the only class I genuinely enjoyed sitting in and just listening. He's a pretty good storyteller so get ready to laugh but also remain somewhat intrigued about the material (which is pretty rare at university). I recommend not skipping class, try to make a summary of notes after each slide presentation each week to help keep on top to ace.
Very good teacher, easy exams. His class is different, he doesnt follow the textbook but puts everything into common snense terms, so you have to go to class to understand, but if you do this course will be a breeze. Take this professor, he is what a professor should be like.
Daryl is a great professor. Although attendance isn't mandatory and you'll probably do well from just studying the slides, the extra knowledge and personal experience he shares is more beneficial than anything the textbook teaches. One of my favourite classes this semester. I would take a marketing course with Daryl again.
Great prof, gives hilarious and engaging lectures. All around wonderful experience being in his class, incredibly real and down to earth.
His Lectures are AMAZING. Talks about real life and its very interesting. Attend his lectures and it will benefit you for life. With that being said, there is no final, just 2 tests (from test banks) and a group assignment. He grades pretty tough on group assignment so dont procrastinate and dont read off slides for the presentation!Def. Recommend!
Great prof
Enjoyable lectures for the most part besides when he plugs Lou Dawgs for the first three hours of class 1. Other than that really chill guy who's super accommodating, doesn't require you to get the textbook and clearly has a passion for the subject of marketing. Definitely recommend
I am a mature student who gained a ton of valuable real life and business knowledge from Daryl's class. I highly recommend him to anyone who is interested in the entrepreneurship life, you won't be disappointed. He is an engaging teacher whose lectures are a must to attend if you want to be successful in class, but more importantly, in life!
The prof was great and teaches from life experience as opposed to the textbook. I can honestly say I have learned a lot from that class and would definitely have him again as a teacher. That being said, you are mostly tested on material from the textbook which is unfortunate because some of the things taught in class feel so much more valuable.
Mixed feelings about his teaching style. While he's very practical about the real world and makes you see the common sense in things, the exams are quite technical. They don't reflect what we learned in class (aside from the metrics). I found his lectures very interesting, and studied hard, and I still found myself stumped a lot on the exams.
Inspirational and motivational professor, who refers from real life practical examples to teach course material. I have learned more from this course and the professor than I have my entire time at the university. Professor inspires students to find their passion and pursue their goals. Definitely would recommend taking.
The way this course is taught is thought provoking. Professor Dsouza tells stories of personal experience and connects them to the core concepts of the course. This provides the students with a deeper understanding of what activities a sales professional or entrepreneur can do with a specific mindset and attitude required to accomplish their goals.
Daryl is charismatic and can be interesting to listen to however I didnt feel my learning was supported by him. He does not respond to emails whatsoever. Lectures are unorganized & content is super unstructured and so many tangents! Doesn't follow his own syllabus for peer eval on group project. Often 10-15mins late. Rushed lectures.
MKT 504 is a bird course, and Daryl knows it is. He won't make your life harder. He applies real life experience to the textbook because he has a lot of experience running a business. However, I didn't learn a thing. Mostly because I'm not into sales. If you are, then you will definitely like him. Tells a lot of anecdotes. Marks really easy.
He did not explain the group project clearly. The exams were hard with no time to finish.
Taking this course through Chang made it difficult because there were no lectures and the modules/slides were useless when using them to study. Both the midterm and Final were tough and he marked the group assignment hard. If you want to succeed, make sure you do all the readings and take notes on a weekly basis.
Had this class through Chang so I was not able to attend lectures. The midterm and exam were tough (harder than the 20% weekly quizzes) although he did say it would be harder). The weekly quizzes are straight from the textbook and the group project was marked fairly easy (make sure you're in a good group). He is clear with what is expected.
Exam (25%) and midterm (25%) were hard because I took this through chang and there was no actual lectures (self guided course). Weekly quizzes (20%) are straight from the textbook but the exam and midterm were way too difficult. The group project (30%) was marked fair but make sure you're in a good group because he's clear on what he wants.
Easily one of the worst profs I have ever had. He does not explain the major group project clearly and when asked question on course content he does not know how to answer them. Unable to provide help when you don't understand concepts which can be very detrimental in a Chang school course.
This review will be based on an online course I took with him as the teacher: Pros: -Two Attempts On Quizzes - Enough time for Midterm ( 2.6 mins per question) - Metrics are fairly easy to understand Cons: -Tough Grader on Group Assignment Worth More Than Final And Midterm - Final Not Enough Time ( 1.6 mins per question) -No lectures of any kind
Great Prof! really nice and accommodating. Choose the right group, group project worth 30%. Marks generously and easy midterm and exam.
You basically need to learn the course yourself as the test is based on testbanks and Daryl teaches about real life situations. Going to his classes aren't mandatory unless you're really interested about sales. Also, he marked really hard for the group project and did not give proper instructions.
Useless professor. Don't know how he has a good rating. Talks about how the textbook is trash and useless, even though the midterms are based from the textbooks. Mostly talks about his crappy restaurant. Switch if you can.
he's the definition of reading off the slides. none of his lecture materials are his own, you get tested based off questions made by the textbook developers and all he talks about is his own restaurant that relates nothing to the lecture slides. if you have him for mkt drop him you're better off with a prof that actually knows what hes talking abou
Don't even attend Daryl's lectures. All he talks about is his restaurant and many irrelevant things. He cannot teach for his life and I'm not sure why he is getting high ratings. Read the textbook instead, it will save you since the textbook authors are making the midterms and final exam. Make sure you practice the metrics, ez marks for finals
The course itself is easy but i'm not a fan of Daryl. Incredibly unorganized, all over the place lectures. Talks about himself a-lot. Not the worst but try and get another prof.
Tests were unfair and students were not properly prepared with the extra questions provided
the exams are based off the people who make the textbook and his class lectures were like basically useless towards midterms and finals. he doesn't reply to emails whatsoever and he will only open your email if you tell him to in class. he doesn't even give you everything to help you like practice tests or anything until you tell him to on D2L.
This professor's assigned project is so backwards. His case is set decades ago and he wants us to have the research revolving during that time period. When business is future- and innovation-oriented, why are we working on solving cases from decades ago? Have to search through archives for relevant information... Preposterous.
Great prof with a great personality! will go out of his way to help you, accessible outside of class, extremely understanding, and is clearly passionate about what he does. his lectures are clear, engaging, and actually very useful. would def recommend taking him
He was unresponsive and unclear in his answers when he did respond. It was an online course, but his materials often contradicted each other and were clearly recycled from previous years - no effort was exerted by him. In one course module, he literally referred us back to the textbook instead of going over the key points.
