I had Dr. Lam as an assistant professor in my Biology class and he was fantastic. I would not have done as well as I did had it not been for him. I came to him with all my questions and he answered them to the absolute best of his ability. He was a great teacher; he always had me engaged in lectures. Would recommend to anyone!
I had Dr. Lam for summer Microbiology. He knows how to explain things that students can relate to very well. He gave study guides for each chapter before tests and they helped a lot. He's super helpful, I even had a question that was beyond our lecture and he found out the answer for me.
HE IS HORRIBLE. DO. NOT. TAKE. HIM. If I could rate him 0 I would. All the other reviews are from his previous TA classes, but he became an actual teacher and he's cocky and intolerable. He is very rude in class, class is a waste of time because he just reads the powerpoint, and tests are unreasonably hard. 0/10. I had to drop. Find someone else.
He has some hilarious puns, but that's about where it stops. The only reason to go to class is for extra credit clicker quizzes. If you could read slides, you would basically be able to do what he does in class. The tests are rough, but not too terrible if you study for at least a week before.
Is this a hard class? Yes. It's Biology. Is it as bad as some people make it seem? No. You're going to have to put some effort in to get the A. Dr. Lam is a very sarcastic man, but as long as you go to lecture, and actually pay attention, you'll be fine. The tests cover a TON of material so study a little bit each week and you'll do just fine.
Daryl Lam is hands down the worst professor that I have ever had at this university. If you can read a powerpoint you can teach this class because that is all that he does. He calls students dumb for asking questions and refuses to explain things if god forbid you don't understand the first time he reads it off the slide. Don't take him.
If you go to class, and listen to the lecture you'll do fine. It's biology, so you have to be prepared to study on your own. But everything that's on the test is straight from the posted powerpoints, or what he mentions in lecture. Clicker quizzes are extra credit and all show up on the exam. Lam is sarcastic but nice enough when you ask for help.
If you read the textbook, you can do really well on his tests. But if you only go to lecture and don't read, you'll struggle. I hardly paid attention in lecture and still did really well by reading. Attendance is worth 5% extra credit, so come to class. You'll never have a bio teacher give this much extra credit again. It's tough but you can do it.
I genuinely believe that Dr. Lam cares about the future of biology and his students. Even though he doesn't give a good first impression, he gives extra credit, and his test are not too difficult if you study a little during the week and 5-8 hours a couple nights before the test. Study and outline the book, and the class is manageable.
All of his tests questions come from the textbook material and end of chapter questions so read the book, even though he tells you the only material covered on the test are from the power points. He is the only bio professor who will give u 5 points extra credit on final grades and drop your lowest test. TAKE HIM, even though you'll hate him
Professor Lam is very good at explaining the material. Other than for the extra credit clicker questions, you don't really need to come to class. He puts all of the powerpoints online and you can teach yourself the material and still do well on the exams, if you study enough. There is very little homework.
Dr. Lam is a really nice guy but not a great teacher. All he does is read the power points word for word. I only went to class for the clicker quizzes which will give you extra credit at the end of the semester. Even though he didn't teach well it is very easy to study for the test because of the book and the fact he posts all his power points.
If you have to take BSC 114 or BSC 242, TAKE DR. LAM. Took him for both and try to take him for any classes I can. When I studied for his tests, I never made below a 90. Does extra credit ONLY clicker questions so you don't have to go. Easy short online homework for easy points to help grade. Great teacher. Young, easy to talk to and responsive.
Dr. Lam was a good professor. He says at the beginning of the semester that the class is hard but it's not. Also, don't read the book, it won't help you. Just take notes on the powerpoints he does in class and posts online. He tries to be funny so laugh at his jokes it makes him happy.
The lectures are kind of boring because he really just reads off the slides but sometimes he will make funny jokes that you really have to be there to appreciate. He gives out study guides for the tests, and the test is just like the study guides. Also focus on the points in red on the powerpoint cause you may have a question on that thing.
Dr. Lam is a great and funny guy to have as your professor. Overall his class is pretty easy, I didn't pay much attention in class and just crammed for a couple of hours before his tests. He can be really sarcastic sometimes which is polarizing but he does a great job of teaching you the material.
Overall, this class is super easy. His lectures are boring but he tries to make jokes. He gives study guides and the tests come straight from them. Everything comes from the powerpoints that he posts online. I did not use my book or lab manual at all. Share a lab manual with your partner and save money. Easy A if you try
Super easy class in general. His lectures helped me a lot with he material, but attendance isn't mandatory. Study the study guides for the test and you will make an A
This is an easy class. Attendance definitely helps to understand the conceptual things. You do not need to buy the lab manual or the book.
Very easy class but a lot to remember for some of the exams! I personally really liked him because he made study guides for every exam! If you know the study guide you are golden!
Difficult class and he doesn't explain the concepts very well. He read straight from the power point. Study groups are definitely a must to excel. It is a weed-out class. Go to class with your clickers bc he gives extra credit at the end of the semester. A LOT of extra credit.
Honestly I don;t see why everyone gives Daryl a bad rep, he is by no means a good teacher but the class sis so easy that he doesn't have to be. Also so many fail he gives a ton of extra credit by dropping a test and clicker quizzes. Show up to class as clicker quizzes are used to give a massive grade boost at the end of the semester
Dr Lam is an okay professor. He puts his PowerPoint online ahead of time, which is nice, but then rushes through them during lecture. His tone in class makes you want to fall asleep and the clicker quizzes made me want to curl up in my bed and never leave. The tests had information on them that was never taught and would be worded to make them hard
He's very sarcastic when I told him I was failing he laughed and said yeah I know DO NOT TAKE HIM YOU WILL FAIL.
Great teacher! Tries to make the lectures entertaining. The tests are rally easy if you study, and he gives study guides that help a lot.
All of the notes and study guides are online, the test are pretty much based off the study guides so if you study those you should be fine. He gives 60 extra credit points with online assignments which helps your grade tremendously.
Bio is an easy class, if you can memorize a lot. Dr. Lam doesn't help with this by having so many chapters on one exam, nor does he explain the material well. He tends to read off the powerpoint, hardly going into the detail that is on the exams. He also is awkward and doesn't convey material well because of it.
This was the easiest and most interesting science class Ive taken at UA. Lam is an incredible lecturer. He keeps you engaged and interested. If you pay attention in lecture and make and study the study guide you will do fine!
Lam puts all his slides online and tests only from them so paying attention in class isn't necessary. He does clicker quizzes for attendance but they are really easy. Tests are straightforward and not too hard. Overall not a bad choice for Bio 114.
I never attended and got a B+ without studying. Very easy A if you apply yourself like I should have. Drops three HW grades at the end of the year and also scales by a couple percent overall.
DR. LAB IS AWESOME! Don't listen to any bad reviews. He makes it crystal clear what will be on the tests. His tests are directly from the powerpoints. I am not smart guy but I got an A+. He offers extra credit questions on the last two tests and they are very fair tests. I would take Lam again in a heart beat. You still must put in the work.
I was scared to take this class because I heard that very few people do well in it. I worked harder than Ive ever had to, but it definitely paid off!
I thought he was pretty cool, and I enjoyed his lectures. Would definitely take again
Daryl Lam is a good teacher who wants you to do well. He does clicker quizzes almost every class, so if you skip class it will hurt your grade. His lectures are off the powerpoint with good explanations. The material is still very hard so study in advance. Drops the three lowest homework grades and gives makeup clicker quizzes. Test are detailed
He reads off the PowerPoints, which are very long and has a lot of useless information in them that are never on the test. The test are very detailed and hard. He does give a lot of clicker quizzes in class and homework weekly that do help with your grade. I do not recommend him.
This class is incredibly hard. Dr. Lam is a pretty nice guy and a good teacher, but the tests are terribly hard. Class is not mandatory and the notes are all online, but there are pop clicker quizzes almost every day. Even if you think you understand the material, you go to take the test and it is impossible. He doesn't curve or give bonus.
Dr. Lam is a good professor, while he does look at his slides a lot he clearly understands the material very well and is great about answering any questions. A lot of people dropped this class, but in my opinion if you study it's not hard at all. His test questions are straight forward. If you can't pass this class you really shouldn't be pre-med.
If you are a good student, this class isn't hard. He's funny and helps outside of class. I don't know why he isn't rated higher, the homework and exams are easy. Study his powerpoints and you will do great. The clicker quizzes are easy, and he drops your three lowest quiz scores. I would totally take again and recommend anyone to take this class!
I liked Dr. Lam, although he's a bit corny, his powerpoints are well formatted and good to study from. This class was easy for me since I've taken AP bio. But it might be harder if you are bad at memorizing things. There are clicker quizzes for almost every class.
Dr. Lam is a decent dude. Every class is a lecture, but you don't even have to attend class because all of the Powerpoint notes are posted online. If you use the Powerpoint notes for the study guide he also provides, you should do well. He ended up adding 3 points to everyone's final grade which was nice. Just study a little and you'll be fine.
Great professor and would recommend for anyone who needs to take this class as a freshman. Did not need the text book, but mastering biology is necessary for the homework. I studied straight from his power points but attending class is necessary for the clicker quizzes. I had taken ap-biology before this class, but it was exactly the same.
Easiest science I've taken out of 5 so far. Optional attendance, but he gives good examples and tips during lecture so it pays to go. You really only need to study the PPTs and study guides to do well on exams. Lam clearly knows his stuff, but is extremely cocky during class and thinks he's way funnier than he is. Overall super easy class though!
Mr. Lam is really knowledgeable about biology and he answers all my questions with patience. He encourages students to visit him during study hours if they need extra help or wish to go over an exam with him.
Use the PowerPoints to study and Quizlet study guides that you can find. If the material is hairy I'd suggest reading through that specific chapter online (there's animations and photos that will bring you to a better understanding of the material)
He is your best choice for BSC 114! I recommend reading the book before each test when you study. As long as you put a lot of effort in, this class shouldn't be as bad as people make it seem to be. It only weeds out those who just don't want to try. Dr. Lam gets tons of questions and answers them respectfully. He also keeps lectures interesting.
Dr. Lam is an average professor. He is a boring lectured but he is passionate about what he teaches and can be funny at times. Attendance isn't technically mandatory but he gives clicker quizzes every class that you are penalized for missing. He posts all his lectures online which is very helpful for tests, along with the dynamic study modules.
He is pretty straight forward. No grades given besides the 5 tests. He posts his powerpoints and study guides for each chapter. Go through those and you will do fine.
Dr. Lam is one of the best profs Ive had at UA! His lectures were interesting and his tests came straight from the study guides he provided. At the end of the semester, he added 3% to everyones overall grade!
Attendance isnt mandatory but there are frequent clicker quizzes that help your grade. His tests were super easy and he offered bonus on the last two, and the final isnt cumulative. He was the best, especially if youve taken AP bio.
only attendance is 30 clicker quizzes, but 10 are dropped. His lectures are the most interesting I've had so far as a chem engr major. He loves questions, and he is also extremely, genuinely, funny. Make sure you do the dynamic study modules to study for the tests, and go over powerpoints. I never touched the actual book.
You almost have to read the book on your own time to pass this class. He flies through his lectures and you don't really have time to pay attention or learn everything while he's talking. Clicker quizzes almost every class but he drops 10 so it's not like he expects perfect attendance or you to do well on all the quizzes. Tests are pretty hard.
Dr Lam is really funny and definitely the best choice for bsc114. Tests aren't too hard as long as you start studying 3 or 4 days in advance. Know the homework and PowerPoints well and you'll get an A. Clicker quizzes every class but a few are dropped and all hw questions are on quizlet for review. really not hard if you put in a little effort
This class was definitely an easy A for me. If you read the slides before the test, all the material is there. Lecture is mandatory because of clicker quizzes, but he drops a good bit so you can miss a few. There were a few homework assignments every Sunday, but nothing too extreme. Dr. Lam himself is very respected and explains the material well.
10/10 recommend. Grade is based on only 5 tests plus the lab grade, but if you do the study guides, you should be able to pass.
Dr. Lam is a pretty funny guy and gives good examples on how to remember things. There are clicker quizzes every class but he drops 10 of them. Test questions are small details on big concepts so you really have to study and each test covers about 7 ch. Overall a great professor but a pretty hard class. If you try hard you will pass.
One of the best professors that I have had. Nice guy who makes lectures relatable. Would highly recommend!
Daryl does a really great job at being funny and making jokes. There is honestly zero reason to purchase the textbook or even go to class. He posts all of his slides on the first day of class as well as study guides for all of the exams. Definitely take him if you have the chance!
Dr. Lam is one of the best professors at UA. Great lectures, his power points are online, easy clicker quizzes and homework assignments that boost grade, bonus questions on test. Funny and nice guy who really cares about your grade. He makes topics very understandable, so go to class and study his online power points and you will be in good shape.
He is amazing! Very funny and he makes sure you understand the material. He is a really good professor who gives great examples during his lectures. If you pay attention in class and apply yourself to the class, then you will be just fine! Also, the clicker quizzes and homework will boost your grade. Take Daryl Lam!!
Dr. Lam is awesome! He's funny, gives plenty of easy homework assignments, has easy clicker quizzes in class, and the tests are based from the book and his powerpoints. I struggled a little at the start of the course, but if you take notes from the book and his powerpoints, you will be fine. He also gave us a 3% curve at the end of the semester.
Dr. Lam was a great teacher. I highly recommend taking him. I struggled in the beginning of the year but I learned you really need to apply yourself and study the book. He offered extra credit on two exams, dropped ten clicker quizzes, your 3 lowest homework grades, and added 3 percent to everyones grade.
loved this class. he is very cheesy but thats what makes class fun. i almost never paid attention in class but i had to go because of the clicker quizzes(they are easy and you have time to google the answer- he doesnt care). his tests are pretty much straight recall from the powerpoints but make time to study them days before the test, its a lot
Dr. Lam was the best Biology teacher. The material was pretty tough and boring, but he did a pretty good job making it interesting. He was really funny and he would have me laughing pretty much every class and was respectful when answering questions. He added 3% to everyone's final grade at the end of the semester and if you can take Dr. Lam do it.
Go to class and put in a couple hours of studying and its and easy A! Dr. Lam is really personable and tries to make class not super boring (laugh at his jokes). There's clicker quizzes but you get 10 dropped, so you don't have to go to every class.
Dr. Lam is a good professor and is funny. Attendance isn't mandatory, but there are clicker quizzes that are a huge part of your grade. Make sure you put in the effort studying (I did not, and that's why I did not do well). Dr. Lam's class gave me a wake-up call, but I'm thankful I took this my first semester of college.
I absolutely hated BSC 114 and had to withdraw. The only thing Dr. Lam did was read off of powerpoint slides everyday for an hour and 15 minutes. The homework was confusing and had nothing to do with what was discussed in class. There are clicker quizzes every class. Those were the only thing that were keeping me afloat.
Probably one of the best professors I've had at UA. No attendance, homework, or quizzes, literally just the tests. Those are so easy, all I did was read through the powerpoints and I got an A on every single one. He's nice and funny, definitely take him for micro
Dr. Lam was amazing. The class is very lecture heavy but he always tells jokes to keep it entertaining. The tests were directly based off the powerpoints and pearson homeworks. He does have clicker quizzes but you get 10 drop quizzes. He also drops the lowest 3 homeworks. I was genuinely upset to see he wasn't teaching BSC 116
There are clicker quizzes almost every class which count towards your attendance grade. He goes over confusing topics multiple times and shows diagrams. If you pay attention to lectures and review his power points, the tests are simple.
He talks a lot during lectures, just review his powerpoints for the exams. Laugh at his jokes and go to his office hours if youre confused. You can find all the answers to the homework online, study a little and show up to class (participation points) and youll get an A(:
This was the easiest science class I have taken at UA. Your lecture grade is based on tests only. The tests are super easy and just like the study guide provided. I studied usually two days before and did good. He offered 3% extra credit at the end of the semester (could be because we had to move to online because of COVID).
One quiz each week, but only 3-5 questions (The points do add up so always do these) Tests were semi difficult, but if you study the powerpoints he does the lectures over you will be fine! Total of 4 exams and the last 2 had extra credit! On average 1-2 homework assignments a week. (homework is a large % of grade but it's easy) Easy A if you try.
Probably the easiest course I will have taken in college. If you took AP Bio in high school, you will be more than okay. Professor Lam's lectures are straightforward and the exams are very simple (most of the exam material comes from his powerpoints). He also drops low homework/quiz scores and has extra credit questions on his exams, which helps.
Dr. lam is amazing! Tests are super easy as long as you study the power points! He gives weekly quizzes that are super easy that boost your grade.
Somewhat of a harder class considering it's a gen ed. His review sessions are super helpful but his lectures are long and boring.
I took it during the fall of 2020 so it was completely online. He posted prerecorded lectures where he discussed each chapter. I read the book and took notes from it, then watched the lectures before the exams. I really enjoyed the way he explains things. The exams are straightforward and had extra credit opportunities.
He didn't really give good feedback when I went to his office hours. His exams are 100% based off of his lectures so there's no need to read the textbook. If you study the Powerpoints before the exams then you will do well in the class.
Dr. Lam's class is how I expected a college biology class to be. The MasteringBiology homework can be annoying at times, but it's not hard to get a good grade on it. You have to study a couple days for the tests, but you don't need to remember obscure facts. All in all put in the work and you'll be okay
The class is badly designed for online work. Assignments are too dense (mostly difficult sorting questions, not multiple choice), and his lectures don't cover everything that needs to be covered. This class would probably be much better to take in person.
Most of this class's tests were based on the lectures that he uploaded weekly online. As long as you studied the slides and understood the content, this class was relatively easy. He also was super helpful during review sessions before the test and would explain missed questions after the test. Super helpful if you have to take bio II.
He is very passionate about biology which helps, but the grading is a little weird. he does help at the end of the year by dropping a quiz and some homework but if you don't do the work in the class, you won't do well. This is not an "easy A". You have to work for it. That being said it is doable.
This class is definitely not an easy class but if you actually put in the effort you will be fine. The first two tests were rough for me because I didn't have a good study foundation but the last two tests were great. Honestly thought I would get a B, but he raised everyone's grades by 3 so that helped a lot. The study modules helped alot.
He's an amazing professor! He teaches material that you'd need to know for a basic biology class. Pre-meds, He goes in-depth for you in some of his slides. I'd suggest watching them even if you don't need to. Do the work you get and you will get an A. It was rough for me for the first two tests, but it was due to my study habits.
TAKE THIS MAN. He gives bonus points on his exams and at the end of the semester he curves your grade 3 points up. I ended up with over a 100, and honestly think hes your best choice.
Dr. Lam keeps classes interesting and teaches you all the material you need to know. The slides are accessible outside of class. He gives extra credit on exams and as long as you do the homework and pay attention you will do very well. Overall a great teacher and a lenient grader. Highly recommend!
I would rather willingly step on a lego every day for the next year and a half than take Lam's class again. If you didn't ace AP Bio in high school, do not take this class. He assumes that everyone already knows the material and just needs refreshing, rather than actually teaching it. The lab is the only thing that saved me from failing.
Dr. Lam clearly knows his stuff and loves what he does. He posts all the lectures online, so there's really no need to go to class. The exams are solely based on lectures. He goes pretty fast, but if you put in the effort for his class, you'll do fine. At the end of the semester, he added 3 points to everyone's grade. Would take him again.
Dr. Lam was great! His lectures had little jokes thrown in and his tests were actually based on the lecture and materials. He adds on to his slides in class (by talking about things in more detail). He was always willing to help outside class and answer questions if they came up. Hes been one of my best professors!
Lam really knows the material and he loves to joke in class. His tests can be a little confusing but if you study before them you should be fine. He grades HW at the end of the semester which is nice because you can work on your own time. He also gives extra credit on the last two tests.
Dr. Lam made a very content-heavy course enjoyable and fun. Posts lecture videos and slides. Many of the questions on his quizzes appear on the tests. Would take again.
Professor Lam was not helpful when I tried to reach out for help. His class is very lecture heavy and in order to do well on tests you have to read the entire textbook.
Biology isn't my best subject, but I've really enjoyed Dr. Lam as a professor. He posts all chapter lectures on Blackboard, and they're very comparable to in-class lectures. The tests are pretty big, but if you take lecture slide notes and take the practice tests available through the book, you should be okay. Having no final is so nice, too!
the. worst. time. ever. Lam is very lecture heavy and goes very fast in said lectures. When it comes to going to him for extra help...DON'T. He shames you for not knowing the information already. I went to him after the first test to get some pointers on how to do better and he made me cry my eyes out. The only plus side is no final.
Dr. Lam is such a fun professor. Attendance isn't mandatory, but the lectures are very fun to attend. I have no biology background and with the help of tutoring and the dynamic study modules, I made a C. The class was harder than expected, but a good experience.
I love Dr. Lam! Very sweet, funny, chill guy. Attendance isn't mandatory, but his lectures are interesting and he explains concepts really well. He is very up front about grading and gives you all the materials you need to succeed. The class covers a lot of material, so expect to spent a good amount of time studying.
Dr. Lam is great. Attendance isn't mandatory, and he posts lecture videos and slides in blackboard. Lectures aren't that bad, though - he's very sarcastic which can make things entertaining. Tests are straightforward, and if you study the slides/lectures, you'll be fine. He also added 3% to everyone's overall grade at the end of the semester.
Lam was an overall average professor. He doesnt require attendance and all of his lectures are posted online. Also, the tests are pretty difficult given that the online assignments are usually one question about all of the chapters youre expected to know. Tests arent heavily waited so you can still have a good grade in the class.
Lecture heavy. Online assignments are not difficult, but be prepared to study for tests. In my opinion, they aren't too difficult, but the course material is pretty dense. He covers almost all test material through his lectures. Dr. Lam is a funny guy. Take if you already have taken a biology course, or if you need it obviously. Studying was key.
I love professor Lam!
I love Dr. Lam, he's really good at relating biology to real-life examples to make it easy to understand. As long as you study for tests and attend most of the lectures, you'll be fine on the tests. All of the homework is due at the end of the semester so you can do it on your own time.
Dr. Lam is a good professor as long as you pay attention in class, go to class, do the homework, and actually study for the test you should be fine. He is very lecture heavy and he doesn't read off the slides he looks at them and starts talking. He does skip slides because he talks about it the slide or two before. He absolutely has no filter.
Good teacher, you just have to pay attention during lectures and write down what he says. He knows what he is talking about and is an animated lecturer with good analogies to help you understand complex things. Lots of time to do hw and you have 4 exams with no final which is good. No drop but the tests are not hard, you just have to review well.
Dr. Lam is that guy. First of all, he has a genuinely solid personality. He puts up this funny/sarcastic facade, but deep down Lam is a softie who cares about his students. Do the extra credit! It helps a lot. Lam wants you to succeed, so if you apply yourself you should be ok. This is not an easy course, but it helps to have a good teacher.
he was a great professor. genuinely cares about the students and ensured extra points were available for students who put the work in, regardless of their test grades. made lecture enjoyable and was funny too. would definitely recommend this class and this professor:)
Dr.Lam was a great professor! Attendance was not required, but it would be advised to attend class to pass. He gave an extra credit assignment at the beginning of the semester. The tests were fairly easy if you studied & went to class. Homework and Online Assignments HELP SO MUCH! DO THEM ALL!
Awesome professor! If you study, you will get a good grade.
D Lam is the man. Very good lecturer, straight to the point and tells you how it is. I wish he taught more BSC courses so I could take him again. Very solid Prof.
Dr. Lam is fantastic. Man really made me grow to love Ecology, he is hilarious. Take him if you get the chance!
Participation is not a grade but it will help you understand the material by attending lectures. Do the online assignments before the tests as they are similar questions to the tests. This class is a lot of material and not always super interesting but Dr. Lam is awesome at keeping students entertained during lectures. Overall loved Dr. Lam!
Lam is great! Doesn't test on anything not covered in lecture, and lectures were consistently entertaining. He also gave the entire class 3 percentage points for free at the end!
I struggled in this class mostly because of the material but Dr. Lam was very helpful.
I never once stepped foot into this classroom but when I went to take the test the man seemed great. I made a B so thats pretty good. Dont go but you should probably take him because he puts that stuff all online and then easy squeezy. love you.
Dr. Lam was an amazing professor. As long as you do the hw and show up to class, you'll do fine. He definitely helped my grade at the end of the semester and it completely helped my GPA. Funny, accessible outside of class, and loves biology. Would def recommend.
My only critique is that sometimes he kinda makes you feel dumb for not understanding the material at his office hours. But still, Dr Lam is AMAZING and his lectures are super entertaining and engaging. His class is honestly super easy to get a good grade in. He's super straightforward and his exams are all easy. Some even have bonus questions.
Dr. Lam is awesome. His class made me realize that I actually enjoy biology quite a lot and his lectures are great. I recommend going to class because he explains the material in a way that's easier to understand.
Dr. Lam is honestly one of the best professors I've had. Biology is not an easy subject but he makes it easier for students to understand. His final had 3 bonus questions and he bumped up our final grade average by 3% at the end of the semester. Going to lectures isn't mandatory but they're very helpful.
He was good! I took AP bio, and I knew most of the material. However, I was always entertained by his lectures and he was pretty good at going slightly beyond the material to engage the students like me. He was also very good at explaining, and making time for his students. Honestly, he was a good teacher.
So smart that he doesn't always put things in the best terms. First test was mostly understanding of concepts then second was mainly words & definitions. if you take his class STUDY HARD/EARLY unless already advanced in the material. Memorize & understand everything, go to lectures because he emphasizes on what will definitely be on test.
Overall, I would say Dr Lam was a good professor. He is straight forward of what he expects from his students. He did a nice job giving examples and breaking difficult concepts down into simpler things. However, the course itself is very heavy with lots of information. I would seriously recommend studying several weeks in advance.
Lam is a great lecturer and sometimes gives extra credit on tests. All questions from tests can be found in slides, mostly memorization.
dr. lam is a very entertaining lecturer, but he also doesn't waste time. as long as you read the textbook, you will be fine for the exams, but going to class is worth it for dr. lam. he is very helpful if you go to his office hours, and cares a lot about his students.
Only thing im not a huge fan of is that its hard to calculate your grade throughout the semester so you just have to kind of guess. He offers extra credit in the beginning of the year and then gives up to 25 more points through SI tutoring. Our last 2 test he put extra credit questions on the test.
dr lam is a really good teacher but he doesn't waste time with lectures. He makes it very clear what you do and don't need to know for tests. Lots of extra credit opportunities and minimal amount of homework. Tests are made to trip you up but put extra credit questions on the last two tests.
Dr. Lam is the perfect Bio professor for freshmen. He's hilarious, super nice, and gives great examples. Attendance isn't mandatory, but how he explains things during lectures helps tremendously. You can do well by attending class, taking notes, and reviewing them, but reading the textbook will surely help you perform better. The syllabus is clear.
Professor Lam was a very good biology professor. Lots of opportunity for extra credit. Many smaller assignments that contribute to bringing grade up. Lectures are taught fast, however he does his best to add in corny jokes to make it more interesting. You don't really need the textbook, but it is helpful for studying.
Dr. Lam is VERY energetic, loves teaching and helping. I found it to be a bit much sometimes but it's mostly good. Can get ahead of himself/the slides when lecturing. Homework is typically an hour per chapter (short for a science class). Tests were straightforward multiple choice, would have repeat questions. I spent about 15 minutes on each test.
The class was ok, and was fairly easy if you put in the work. However, I found Dr. Lam very condescending especially in the way he answered questions.
Attendance was not mandatory, I only attended the exams. Dr. Lam gives extra credit assignments and questions on the exams. The class is very introductory, so you will not be easily lost. A large chunk of your grade is determined by the homework assignments and quizzes which are both simple and open-note. Very funny in lectures.
Man's a king, gives extra credit opportunities, has very engaging lectures, is very explicit about when all homework and quizzes are due, posts his notes online ahead of time, and tests are very do-able if you study.
Dr. Lam was great. Very good at teaching during lectures and helped with any homework questions. Tests were exactly what slides prepared us for.
Dr. Lam was amazing! Super funny guy, would definitely recommend him. Even though his class covers so much material, as long as you read the book and GO TO CLASS you'll excel. He is more than happy to meet during office hours to help with material. His tests are very straight forward, if you study you'll do great! Best stem teacher I've had at UA.
The textbook is not required but very helpful! There is not a ton of homework, but you need to understand and know the material well for tests.
He is a great professor, read the book and you will be okay!
Best professor for BSC 114. He is hilarious when lecturing and relates biology back to real life scenarios.
Daryl Lam is an amazing professor, I would choose him for BSC 114 over anyone else! His lectures are very clear, he provides a good amount of extra credit, is open to questions, and has helpful TA's and SI periods.
He makes most topics interesting, but sometimes his detail can be confusing and I struggle with getting above a B on his exams.
Professor Lam brings a lot of energy to his lectures and makes the material engaging. While the course covers a lot of content, using unstuckstudy alongside the textbook and class notes can help stay on top of the workload.
Dr. Lam is a great teacher. He's nice, funny, and very knowledgeable. If you don't have much background knowledge, be prepared to study. Luckily he always assigns homework way before the deadline so it's not overwhelming. Its easy to miss points on homework but you get drops. Exam material is always in his slides. Study and you will do fine!
Dr. Lam is a good teacher. Nice, funny, and very knowledgeable. Always eager to answer students' questions. I had to study a lot in this class, but the exam material comes from his slides. Some homework but he assigns it way before the due date. You get a few drop homeworks too. Would take him again! Study and you will be fine!
Great professor overall. The grading is very straight forward and it is very easy to keep up with when assignments are due. Homework is hard because it comes straight from the text book but the assignments he makes are simple.
Prof Lam was great! I've never been great at biology, but Lam explains everything in a way that makes sense. He knows a lot about the subject, but understands how to teach at the level of the class. He is very clear when assignments are due, and will do an in class review session before every test. I will be seeking out his classes in the future!
Dr. Lam is caring & is always willing to help his students. Lectures are interesting and he does a phenomenal job of providing different analogies to the content. The homework is a little difficult but online assignments and tests are extremely doable if you apply yourself. He offers a TON of extra credit. I would recommend him a million times!!
The easiest biology class I have ever taken, and by far. He offers extra credit assignments, AND extra questions in the exam. Has extra credit student instructor sessions. His exams are also incredibly easy. His lectures are fine, what he mentions is on the exam in the simplest form so it is a light class. Take him for sure.
Dr. Lam is easily my favorite professor on campus, he makes his class as engaging as possible and easy to understand. He posts all of his slides online, homework is due the night before the exams, and the exams are very straight forward as long as you do the homework and pay attention is class.
Dr. Lam is funny and his lectures are very engaging. The class is an easy A as long as you show up to class and listen to what he says, since he makes all the tests himself, and they're always based on exactly what he said in lecture. Homework is all due the day before the test, and the homework load is minimal. Easiest course I've had at UA.
Dr. Lam is amazing! He was great at teaching the material and made the lectures interesting. There are three very easy exams. He tells you exactly what is going to be on them in the exam review days. He also gives a ton of extra credit. This class is a very easy upper level bio credit and is taught by a great guy who really cares. Take him!
His lectures were engaging and the workload wasn't bad if you don't wait to do everything until the last minute. His tests are not bad either as long as you do some preparation for them. He also gave a bit of extra credit which helped raise my grade. He covered the material very well and I would absolutely recommend taking his class.
Dr. Lam was a very funny and engaging professor. I thought it was easy, but I also took AP bio in HS and was retaking it to make sure I still knew what I needed to know. His lectures are not mandatory, but they are very helpful.
Professor Lam is an excellent instructor who genuinely cares about his students' success. The class was moderately difficult, but if you stayed on top of the material and put in consistent effort, it is much easier. Engaging professor who has fun lectures and gives an insane amount of extra credit. He wants you to do well in this class.
Dr. Lam makes it very clear what will be on his exams. As long as you pay attention in class and do some studying, you should earn a good grade. He also has multiple easy extra credit opportunities. Lectures aren't mandatory, but he's very entertaining and explains the concepts well. Exams are on slides/lectures, not the textbook.
Dr. lam is a good professor. its clear he is very knowledgeable. the material itself is hard so thats the reason for the low grade. otherwise, take advantage of his office hours and SI. he uses a lot of examples in the lecture to make it a bit more relatable, also do the homework.
Great guy and super funny in lectures! You should absolutely actually go to class or you'll be kinda screwed for tests - gives some bonus questions on the final. LOVE Dr. Lam!
You get extra credit for going to SI. His tests are really easy if you simply go to the lectures, which he makes very interesting. LOVED HIM. there is no dropped test and no cumulative final.
Dr. Lam is so awesome! Go to SI for extra credit, very very very test heavy. Really good at lectures and always ends a couple minutes early. Does review sessions before the tests, attendance isn't mandatory. I would TOTALLY take this class again. Best STEM prof I've had.
Dr Lam's Evolution class is awesome. He told us exactly what to study for the 3 exams during the review day. He explains concepts clearly and easily and is very funny too. There are a few in class discussions on research papers that were super fun. I think I took more from this one class than ecology and evolution, microbio, and cell combined.
Dr. Lam was a great lecturer; he made classes very entertaining to attend and was also very accessible. He used a lot of analogies that made concepts easy to understand and remember, and was very down to earth. I enjoyed his class so much that I added future classes to my program to take him again and greatly suggest taking him for intro bio.
I would take this class again. I took for Pre-med pre recs and I would 100% take it again. Best STEM prof at this school. Definitely going to have to put in work for the class but everything is very clear if you take time to look over/study it.
There are not many assignments. I did well in this course, but there is a lot of material to study for each exam. His teaching study is not my favorite. He tends to make fun of students and tell stories that have nothing to do with the lectures. It makes lectures hard to follow. His exams are not too bad, though!
All he does the entire class is read off the slides!! There are homework assignments that are nothing like his test. During lecture he would get to a slide and skip it because "we should already know this." Very hard to follow along during class and constantly goes into a deep dive and then say but you don't need to know that. DO NOT TAKE!!!
Easily the best teacher I've had in my lifetime as a student, his lectures are so interesting, and he has a way of helping you remember very important information, which makes studying easier! He has the ability to easily simplify complex information. Take him if you can and put in some effort to study for exams, and you can easily get an A.
He's very funny and makes things easy to understand with good analogies. Gave so much ec on the final that's easy to earn if you pay attention in class. The review sessions before the exam are very helpful, you can literally ask what will/won't be on the exam and he will tell you. Content isn't that hard if you attend class and put in some effort
Lam is great if you are already somewhat familiar with biology. His tests are fairly easy and material is given in class and posted online. The last two tests have extra credit opportunities. He is somewhat sarcastic and some students find him abrasive, but I enjoyed my time in his class. He does a good job of explaining concepts in simpler terms.
