Has a thick accent, so you might want to sit in front of class. Good teacher, really knows his stuff. Very willing to help his students, and has a good sense of humor.

I had Professor Nguyen for IS 431 & IS 441. Its a lot of work, however he explains very well. For his multiple choice and his short easy questions study only his lecture notes, and as the diagrams review the handouts and assignments. Best IS professor.
CSUN students really don't have much choice when it comes to IS teachers. Dr. Nguyen is evidence of that. He is very hard to understand & follow and he doesn't let you finish your questions if you ask one in class, yet he still is the best CSUN has. Shame
Good teacher, although experienced some communication but you can get use to it. He explains and helps with care for the student. Nice professor. I Enjoyed taking his class
very good teacher. Willing to help students. has an accent so don't try to understand what he is saying. i enjoyed the class. Good sense of humor, always smiling
Good professor, cares about the students and his teaching. Material is easy to learn, very leniant grader. Start on project EARLY, don't procrastinate like me
Great professor!
pfffff....
he's a great professor.. dont care if u come to the class or not... as long as u know the stuff...warning, there is a 100page project...so ENJOY... :)
"DATABAEEEEEEEE" I LuV ThiS ClAss. THE PROJECT IS EASY..... WORTH 60% of the grade. Easy "A" class..... Very helpful!!! GOT TO TAKE HIM
Whatt the poblem?- He's the only one teaching it. Whatt the issue?- Ridiculous number of lecture slides, and a huge project. Whatt the solution?- Daataabaaeee Pakkett
Demonstrates an inability to speak or comprehened the English language. Cares more about the number of diagrams than the content. Makes a big deal about "being an IS professional" when that is something he has never been. Overall, it appears he decided to teach because he couldn't survive in the real world. Avoid if possible.
Needs to learn English.... very hard to understand. Exams are ok... except the essay part... i mean who give an essay in an IS class... try to avoid if possible...
Think twice before you take him.........i say keep thinking....
There are 3 hw assignments, 5 two-page topic reports, 1 group project (varies from 60 - 100 pgs), 1 midterm, and 1 final. He doesn't curve tests but offers 1% e.c. for anyone who draws diagrams on the board. He lectures mainly from powerpoint. It's hard to understand him at times because of his accent.
Professor Nguyen is fair. Yes, there is a language barrier, but he knows what he's talking about. Start project early - get with group members who will work on project equally! Exams are not too complex, but do study for them to earn a better grade. Know and understand the diagrams. Good luck.
Not a bad instructor. He's still playing favorites, doesn't answer email, guidelines in doing the project weren't really clear, doesn't answer email (2nd time I put this), but grades easy. Sometimes he's hard to understand, but is able to get the point across to most of the students.

NOT CLEAR!!! NOT HELPFUL at all...ask him a question he will not answer.. also projects that he want you to do is not clear.. can't understand what da hell he is talking about.. language problem...
This guy undoubtedly plays favorites. I assure you that you will have trouble grasping what he's saying. He is also the only one teaching this class so good luck trying to figure him out.
He is a really great teacher; breaks everything down and makes it easy. The projects were easy as well. Study the online quiz and u will be fine.
He is a nice person, very helpful with a lot of explanation. If you stuck in his lections he will stop and go aroun all the class to help with your computer. He working hard and trying do it with you same.Just be an a time in his class, did all his assighnment on a time, read his web-page and you will be OK.His midtern and finals hard, but projects fun.
He is a great Professor, with a lot of knoweledges. He is very helpfull and if you stuck in his lections he will help you emmidiatly. Nice personality, just be in a time in his class, did all his assighnmets and read his webpage. You will be OK.
His class very difficult, he gave to you a midtern and finals, like it is Harvard or Eyel. He undoubtedly plays favorites, but it is just a mask, don't belive it.The projects Access,Web-page and Excel- not in a book or somewhere, just from his lection with you don't understand. Never in his class.
Good teacher. But hard to understand his accent. Don't learn much in his class.
His class is boring, unhelpfull and difficult, no books for his projects. Nobody knows how he gradet essays in your medtems and finals. Never ever in his class if you wona to keep your GPA.
Don't learn jack S*** from the class. Hard to understand due to his thick accent!
Nice personality, but very unhelpfull, not clear and difficult. Hes slides dosn't help on your midterm and final. Never take his class.
Boring, difficult, not clear and unhelpfull. Don't take this class. Professor nice person, but that all.

You cant understand a word this man says. Makes you wonder where our tuition money goes. The guy is a joke! Must be vietnamese to understand. Just teach urself excel, access, and frontpage... do well on the projects... and study his slides for the midterm/final and ull do fine. DONT BUY THE BOOK. Didnt use it once and did well in the class.
Dont attend class unless there is a hands-on activity. Otherwise, sit in the front as it is difficult to understand his accent. He is not an approachable person & is defensive when asked a question. He is ****; he's friendly and talkative to boys but serious when speaking to a female student. Take someone else if possible but he's not too bad
I didnt understand a word he said the whole semester. Im usually pretty decent with accents too but he is horrible, I left the class with a headache from trying to understand him. The projects are easy and the only thing that saved my grade. Had no clue what was going on with the tests (probably cause I couldnt understand him) =( ick
He is hard to understand so I sat in front which helped a little. Just go over slides and you should be fine, I never even bought the book and I got a B in the class.
really hard to understand him but you don't have any choice you have to take him. you need to do his homework, his project it will take you for ever to finish. you don't have to buy the book, you can just study his powerpoints. his doesn't really answer you questions when you ask him. goodluckk.
Ok he's hard to understand. You have to read the chapters, those who didn't are the ones that got bad grades. He tells you what to concentrate on for the exams. His projects are not hard if you take notes in class.Do the chapter quizzes and you will get at least a B.Not hard to get an A with a little effort. You can't expect an A just by showing up!
Mr. Nguyen is a very nice guy. He never assigns homework. He doesn't even take attendance. All he does is powerpoint lectures. His only problem is that he needs to work on his english. Not to be mean, but you can barely understand half the stuff he says. He has two exams throughout the semester and grades hard.
good thing i didn't listen to the bad raters. He was good, ya hard to get but you get used to it. Go to class, sit in front, take notes for the projects. He makes sure that everyone gets it in class by going around. You need the book for the test, slides r 2 messy. Got an A by reading the book and doing quiz online. He's the best out of all. takeit
I am a good student with above ave computer skills, but this guy is a joke. HORRIBLE accent makes him impossible to understand. Puts down his students and extremely unclear. I'm sure he is a smart man but should NOT be teaching at any level. Worst teacher i have EVER had in my life. Don't bother going to class or buy the book as neither will help.
Stop complaining, i had no experience with comps and still got an A in his class. He is the best, makes sure everyone gets what he says. Nice and respectful teacher and i'm a female. Don't pay attention to these raters, he's good i switched from another professor and couldn't be happier. Study before the test by doing online quizez, and read throug
It takes a little while to get passed his accent to understand what he says but after a few classes you can understand him unless he gets excited and starts talking fast then it's a little confusing. It's not a hard class but requires alot of work. He's really a nice guy & cares. Also very funny.
very helpful + friendly professor ! take him !
I never got a single word that he had spoken.Overall he is ok.Exams are little bit hard.Do the projects on time, talk to him
Difficult to understand. Essay questions were ambiguous to study for. Sit up front so you can make an effort to understand him.
If you come go to class, pay attention, take notes, you'll do fine, he gives you hints on what will be on the midterm and final. You do have to read the book and do the work. At the end, he does give a boost on your final grade. I enjoyed his class and learned a lot.
Dr. Nguyen rocks!!! He knows the material and cares about his students. The project (60-100 pages) is challenging but very straight forward... just start immediately after the midterm! Midterm contains 50% DFD, some essay questions and multiple choice. Not hard but you have to work fast to finish. Everything you learn applies to the real world!
He's extremely difficult to understand. He does not speak english very well at all. His powerpoint lectures are difficult to follow. Go to class to learn how to do projects and see what's on tests. That's really all that's needed. Tests are pretty easy but include essay answers. He's very nice, though.
He always smiles and is helpful. But he expects you to learn. I took away a lot practical computer skills from this class. He has an accent but if you make effort you'll understand without huge problem.
Good professor. A little difficult to understand at first but if you pay attention you get used to him. Projects were easy, pay attention in class he tells you what will be on his exams. Read the text book and don't cheat, you'll do fine.
Took him for Summer session. 1 Midterm and 1 Final & 3 projects. Most importantly no homework! The tests includes essays which is the hardest part of the whole class and you don't really know what those questions for the essays will be asking. He does gives hints but you still need to study agressively if you want an A. His accent is not a problem!
Took BUS302 with him. Nobody (except for the Vietnamese) could understand this guy. Literally! We worker hard all semester and we got 75.80,85,70,90,80 (random grades) He doesnt even read the cases completely!
Dr. Nguyen is a nice guy for the most part, writes in good technical English, a lenient grader, but his accent is terrible. I don't know why any school would hire him when he lacks one of the most fundamental abilities of teaching: communication. Why would he choose this line of work for that matter? Get ready to "outsarr(ource)" your information.
GREAT PROFESSOR! Hard Tester! There's 3 HW assignments, 1 massive group project. 1 midterm, 1 final. The problem with his class it's too long and he uses every minute for the lecture. And the tests, you have no real idea what he will test you on. No heads up on what the essay going to be on. No use for the book at all. what a waste of money!
He has a thick accent so it might take some time to get use to. He is helpful if you ask the right questions. Hes a real nice guy. He tries to be funny. This class is not hard, but I have yet to meet anyone who likes working in groups. Luck of the draw. Out of the 6 members in my group, 4 of us were on top of it. Ended up with an A-.
Poor time management. Unless you follow and copy his board examples, you cannot do the homework or study for the tests. Little followup material provided. Attendance is mandatory or you will fail his class.
He is a great professor! I highly recommend anyone to take any of his classes. The project was fun too. Good luck :) I didn't do the reading
This class is a joke. the professor is useless in every way does cannot speak English clearly and when you ask him a question he tells you to sit in the front and pay attention even though your sitting in the 4th row since there are alot of people in class and not everyone can sit in the front duhhh!!!!! do not recommend take it with someone else
I felt like I did not get a lot out of learning in this class. The professor is nice, but it isn't clear on what he wants and what is being taught. I got a C+ in his class and that was really fortunate. 3 homework assignments, 1 group project, 1 book report, 1 midterm and a final. Work with others to get the homework done!
It is very hard to understand him due to his accent. You must sit in the front if you want to be able to hear anything. The two projects are not that hard but the tests are very specific. It was hard for me since I could not understand anything he said.
You might as well not go to class except for project practice because you won't understand much of what he says and it is so boring. I did really good on the projects but the midterm I got 79% and must of bummed the final to get a C+ in the class. His test consist of multiple choice, essayS and project questions.Book will help! I'd try someone else
I think I understood about 75% of his lectures. Thick Viet accent. He gives you little time to finish the midterm, so you have to work fast. The project was a real pain to do, so try to get a good, non-procrastinating group.
Dat-Dao is a nice person, and willing to explain things in office hours. However, he plays favorites; if you're in MISA, he'll go easy on your grades, if not well... Good luck is all I can say. Has a thick Vietnamese accent, and I only understood roughly 3/4 of his lecture.
couldn't understand him half the time, I had to rethink my life in class and realize that my life is going down the drain every day I sit in this class?
DO NOT EVER TAKE HIS CLASS IF YOU CAN !!!!!!!!!! NO ONE KNOW WHAT HE TALKED ABOUT!!!
Nice personality but his accent can really be a handicap for most people. Everyone can hardly understand him 60 percent of the time. There's no study guide so you have to know what are the important and what's not. 1 mid term 1 final 1 group project(which is really hard to impress him with) overall the class at nature is diffucult .
OK I was hesitant to take this class because of the poor reviews but Man! this class was actually very easy to pass. People are complaining about his accent and how they cannot understand. YOU DON'T NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHAT HE'S SAYING. There's 2 Group Projects--He shows you how to do them. 2 Exams--just study the vocabs and Topic report.
Not only is his accent difficult to understand, but he would rather make snarky comments instead of answering you if you asked questions for clarification. Pretty standard: 1 group project, 1 solo project, a midterm, and a final. A lot of material and no study guide. Read on your own. Good luck.
One of the hardest classes I've ever taken not because the material was difficult but because the professor was the worst. Accent so thick, impossible to understand. 4 assignments which he randomly gives grades out for depending on if he likes you or not. 1 huge semester-long project that he doesn't even look at. Midterm and final were fairly easy.
The DFD model is like building the house, paint and other things is not important but the structure is important. That is all I got from his lecture since his accent is so thick.
Wow. It was torturing taking this professor. Unfortunately, he is the only one teaching this course. But someone should stand up and bring this to the chair attention. Boring vague lecture. Jumps from one topic to another. The guy doesn't even know what he is lecturing about. Half the time in class he pressure students to join his stupid MISA club.
IF THIS CLASS HAD SUBTITLES MAYBE I COULD STAND HIS SASS. MAYBE. The temptation to browse your phone or computer is unrelenting in this class. Even when i put away all distractions, i cant understand what the hell this man is saying. sassy and rude, avoid at all costs. i wish another prof taught this class. the group project is meh
This is a hard class, the professor is very hard to understand. Grades at random and expects a lot from students when he provides little. He also is horribly homophobic. He needs to be reviewed by the department.
The class itself isn't difficult per se, but it's his thick accent that really makes it difficult to absorb the material presented in class. If you want to do well on exams you'll want to study the terms in the book and the diagrams he goes over in class. The group project is long and feels like busy work but is not that difficult.
It is dangerously easy to tune this man out. If another professor was available to teach this class I would switch in a heartbeat. If you want any hope of understanding him in order to pass, sit at the front, put away all distractions, and focus all your might on discerning what he's rambling about. Good luck.
His very thick accent makes understanding him a definite challenge, but his barely passable speaking grammar makes him downright incomprehensible. It wasn't until after the first exam that I started to be able to understand about half of what he said. When asked questions, he gives an unhelpful response and he grades essay questions very harshly.
Aside from the heavy accent, his lectures are not effective. The 50+ slide presentations he uses during his lecture will still leave you asking questions. When students ask questions, he makes them feel silly for asking them and repeatedly says "Really? It's easy." or something along those lines. The department needs to do something about this man.
Databaeeee!!! Dat Dao is the best professor I have ever taken! He is very caring and loves all his students. Thanks to his lectures on DFD, I landed a $100k+ job at Google and I'm making tons of money. Definitely take him if you want to learn amazing things that can land you a high salary job!
He plays favorites and if you attend MISA you will get a good grade but if you get an A on the final you'll still bomb the class.
By far, the WORST professor I've ever taken out of over 40 I had. Not a single good thing I can say about this guy. Couldnt understand much of his lectures. Unwilling to help with anything. Doesnt try to help the class learn the material at all. Has a bit of an attitude. All of the grading was based on whim. NOT recommended. He's just awful. 1/5
Words cannot describe how downright terrible he is as a professor. I just can't understand why someone like him is giving us lectures on this class. He's put a strain on my confidence of being able to graduate since he's the only one teaching this course. Oh, what would I give to have anyone but HIM teach IS 431. Excuse me while I go cry in despair
This is the worst class with the worst professor in CSUN, if possible really hope CSUN can have somebody replace him, hard to understand, all count by yourself, never try to help, doesn't like student visit hi during the office hour. Overall, too bad.
This dude's lecture is just powerpoint slides. He tries to teach, but his accent makes it harder to comprehend. You cannot understand feedbacks he writes on your assignments and midterm. Man, I wish they just remove this class or this professor. Very useless class if you are an CIT major.
This is a hard class. People write bad reviews because they don't invest the appropriate amount of time to do well in this class. Don't buy the book and study the powerpoint slides. Get started on the assignments as soon as you can, they are difficult and complex. He tells you exactly what's going to be covered. His way is the best way! Good luck!
Dr. Nguyen aka Dat-Dao is awesome. First off, this is a hard class so if you don't pay attention, read his powerpoints or ask him questions you will do bad in the class. He does have a heavy accent so it can be hard to understand him but he is willing to help until you understand. 3 Assignments, 1 Book Report, 1 Group assign, 1 Midterm, 1 final.
I don't think he's a bad professor but he's not very resourceful. You have to work hard to pass. Get a good group. Pay attention as hard as that sounds. Do take plenty of notes. What helps a lot is write down diagrams instead of taking pictures. Go over pwrpoints to study for exams and especially assignments. Great guy ovrall and pretty funny too.
Lecture slides are a mess. Lectures are a mess. Assignments have many ways to be correct, but if it's not done HIS way, too bad. Assignments have textbook answers online, but he does them differently so those answers are wrong to him anyways. Midteram and Final hard essay questions little time. Many don't finish the tests. Join MISA to pass.
The class and material is not hard but the professor makes difficult through his horrible teaching and heavy accent. Try your best to understand the diagrams and read the power points on your own. Exams are way to long for his time duration. Get a good group and try to learn the material amongst each other, best recommendation to pass this class.
I am pretty sure he knows his stuff. But you can't just bash on other majors and what they do. That's not right. And the worst part is you are not even that of a good teacher.
Probably worst teacher ever. His thick accent is pretty heavy and he so soft spoken voice makes it hard to understand. Should have dropped this class sooner.
This guy is a nightmare! I cant believe the amount of work he expects from students. You have to spend hours and hours on his homeworks and a long project. I wouldnt this guy again and I recommend you to not take at all. 20 multiple choice, 4 essay questions, and a dfd project in his midterm and 60 minutes! He is from another galaxy. Tough grader
One of the worst professors at CSUN. Not recommending him at all!
Avoid him if you can. He makes the subject harder than it is.
Even if your answers are correct, he will mark it wrong just because it is not the way he wants. I would never take his class if there were other options. Make friends and take lots of pictures of the diagram he does. Study them properly. Other than that he is definitely one of the worst professors at CSUN.
His grading system is not clear. Can't even understand what he says!
The only thing I've learned in this class is that you should never be worried finding a job! If this guy can teach with no teaching talent, I can be the next guy who lunches Apollo to the Jupiter!
If you want to pass, sit in the first 4 rows and pay attention. You won't understand him no matter hard you try. Take pictures of EVERY SINGLE DIAGRAM and MEMORIZE them. The MC final and MC midterm are on quizlet somewhere. Ask your peers for help! Many people saved work! Joke around with him bc it shows you care for him. Don't take if u can :/
His heavy accent is killing the lectures. Very hard to understand and very annoying. Sometimes he has problems with excel or access which is just unfortunate when youre trying really hard to understand. You cant ask questions during the lectures, most of your questions will remain unanswered. Dont take his class .
I never leave bad reviews but this was needed to save other students from him. He does not know how to communicate. He ignores emails and doesnt let you unmute your microphone to ask questions. His grading criteria does not make sense. I dont understand how he was hired.
I don't recommend taking his class online. He doesn't allow you to communicate at all during lecture and he wont allow you to unmute your microphone. If you have questions he expects you to type it in the chat and then he glosses over them, doesn't give clear responses, questions simply go unanswered. Exam expectations are unclear and grading harsh
by far the worst professor, I have ever encountered. besides his heavy accent, confusing lectures, or exams that aren't covered in his lecture nor the textbook, his attitude towards the students. He sets the tone on the first day of class that only "40% of the students will pass his course". I had the worst experience taking IS431 with this guy.
