Great prof. Funny. Knows his stuff. Reminds me of an english lord.
Great prof! Best one I've had, made classes interesting and fun!

Good prof but just a bit arrogance. Needs to be put in his place. Teaches a schulich certificate course offered through arts and treats people in arts as if they are not worthy of setting foot into schulich.
Arrogant is a bit of an understatement, but he is entertaining.

tough, but very smart. not politically correct...fun
Read straight from the textbook to teach. Could have stayed home if I wanted to do that.
So far, he's an enjoyable prof. Uses quirky examples to get points across and you get what he's trying to explain. Occasionally retreats into some conversation with himself but it's fairly amusing.
Does have some decent comments but treats students like crap. He's very arrogant and has little to no respect for students. Needs to develop some people skills
Mid-term was right out of the study-guide. He knows economics.
Hated him. Arrogant, mean, insulting.
EASIEST iBBA COURSE YOU WILL EVER TAKE AT SCHULICH! Barrows is bizzare yet formal and surprisingly compassionate to the human condition once you see past his "Yankee" demeanor.
Extremely sarcastic, american, and insightful.Lectures come as close to making economics interesting as they can.Low semester long workload, very high end of semester workload.
Shocked and killed the class with a super hard midterm (no study guide questions plus there was stuff we didn't learn!) Also watch out for his tedious research papers.
Didn't teach any material or concepts the whole semester. First one out of the classroom class is over. He uses relevant real-life scenarios, but fails to teach concepts to analyse the cases. Midterm and final are nothing like the lectures.
lectures are useless... funny prof. but no need to attend lectures. grades on assignments are granted on a random basis (i literally saw the way the marker marks - 4 piles of assignments, each placed randomly on each pile - A,B+,B,C+)
he needs to get around reading the text book he's picked for the class because I dont think he knows what's in it. I learnt 16 new words on my final exam. Totally bizarre course!
Knows his material - a real expert - but little feedback and you better approach his class with maturity. Excellent sense of humour, which creates a friendly atmosphere - a welcoming class.
Gives tests with questions taken directly from the study guide then bells down huge at the end of the year. Lectures are ok but professor is unresponsive to student concerns. Don't take him unless you generally get low grades and have nothing to lose.
Smart, sarcastic, condesending, and intersting. The midterm and final are nothing like the lectures, most of the class failed. However he bells massively and the average was a B+.
He is a great lecturer but that is all that he is. Not helpful, runs out of class to avoid dealing with students. Definitely not interested in helping students and does not care at all. He just lectures and runs. No point in going to the lecture, tests from the study guide.

watch out for his econ research papers! They're hell!
Tests right out of the study guide.. likes to talk about himself more than Econ. If you want to actually learn something switch out NOW
Exam was brutal, but he was a great lecturer.
I have had my share of bad teachers but none that I can say I dislike as a person...until now. I genuinely dispise this man both as a person and as a teacher. A note to future econ students avoid him like the plague!!!
****, CONDESCENDING, ANGRY, INCONSISTENT. He will tell you to do something then totally contradict himself the next week. He doesn't read phase reports beyond the Executive Summary. He does not advise, only deride. This man needs to retire or find therapy for his anger issues.
Wow, people seemed to have bashed him enough. Is there anything left for me to say? Oh wait, yes, his sarcasm is not funny the second lecture on. It's plain mean. I agree with the exams being brutal and yes, agree with the anger issues. Now you decide whether you'd like him or not.

Useless theoretical course that will be forgotten 15 min after the final exam. Barrows avoids dealing with students, he always runs out of class to avoid questions. He doesn't care and he lets you know it!! Avoid like the plague
complete jerk.
have only had two lectures with this chap, and I already know that he has lingering familial issues that cause him internal anger. His "eccentric prof" schtick has already gotten annoying. And he has already told us three times that MBA degress are increasingly useless.
Fantastic lecture style. Has a way of teaching that allows the information to stick. Learned something new each class.
Excellent Lecturer. One of the best I've had at Schulich. Would take any course he is teaching. Exams are not easy, but they are definitely fair. Lectures are very easy to absorb, and the information is interesting and relevant.
Funny guy.. keeps class interesting.
See Below-no words for this bitter man---
The MBAs seem to love him, but I haven't met anyone in the BBA program that does. He was boring and totally didn't seem to care whether we understood the material or not. Sometimes I doubt whether he even read our final essays...
I've taken 4 courses with Dave and he rocks. He's intelligent, funny, interesting and one of the few professors willing to help students outside of class. He's always particularly helpful with providing introductions to contacts for jobs, informational interviews and school project assistance.
This guy is as bad as his textbook and seems to be quite a jerk besides. Spends the entire lectures regurgitating the awful textbook that he and his colleague wrote, and when you ask about the questions in it, he refuses to answer. AVOID this man!
Definitely has "issues". Annoying, disrespectful, and aloof. Why he's teaching is beyond me. Glad that he wasn't my 601 chair.
In one of my classes he tripped on a table so he threw it against a wall. As others said, he's rude, aloof, and immature but as long as you do the work and can put up with him you can get a B. Just don't ask questions in class. Almost everyone who asked a question got shot down by him. Our mid term was brutal so he did a nice bell curve on it.
This prof is funny. He's a bit odd at times and does really weird things. But, he explains things VERY clearly and goes through examples. Very clear with answering Q's. Midterm is based on study guide, as is the final supposedly. You have a 30% paper due at the END of the year which is a way to boost your mark. He keeps you amused in class.

i love this man. i think he's hilarious. he scares the hell out of me, but he's funny.
he was barely ever in class
This professor is completely uncomitted to his students. This is obviously more of an income source than it is a passion for him. Although he seems knowlegable, his lack of enthusiasim makes it difficult to even try and appreciate the course.
Very entertaining prof. Can scare you sometimes with his bipolar-like behaviour. Just make sure you're not late to class..or if you are..be ready to get picked on.
Brutal Class. Instructs his TA's to mark harshly. Was entertaining in class, but mostly wasted time.
Very clear with the lectures. He also helps if you talk to him one on one. The midterm and exam he gave were fair in-terms of how the TAs were told to mark. Lastly, his classes were hallarious!

Dave is a very practical prof who has an excellent knowledge of Economics, Strategy, Politics as well as tons of practical experience. His classes are very interesting and never dull. He is quite willing to give contacts for interviews and projects. Dont turn up late in his class or you get picked! Overall a great Prof.
The only upside of this prof is that he is entertaining. His teachings structure is awkward--hard to follow -- what he says has minimal relevancy to the test. I wouldnt take him...enuff said
Sexiest professor in the world... Not to forget that he is also hilarious and his teachigs are relevant
Really cares about students and makes learning interesting/easy!

Very entertaining lectures. He knows his stuff and applies it well to the real world.

Hi powerpoint is exactly the same as the book, which happens to be his book. He repeats the same examples and is not punctual.
He knows his stuff. He style is harsh for the sake of his amusement and those students that understand how he likes to take people out of their comfort zones in order to challenge them. Great person outside of class and will go out with students for a drink. just don't expect him to pick up the tab!
I love Dave Barrows. He's blunt, just this side of a complete ass, but he's an equal opportunity ass, and it's all part of his performance. His class is extremely engaging, he is very knowledgable and very very funny. Highly recommended.
Absolutely the worst professor at Schulich. Stay far far away!!!! When I went to his office hours, he played computers games instead of helping me. This is why tenure had a bad rap.
One of my most interesting profs @ Schulich. If you like Hugh Lawrie in House MD, he has a similar style. Would recommend to others purely from quality of discussions in class.
Easy One ...
Amazing. Knew what he was talking about. Helpful. Lectures are actually interesting.
The course itself is very useless. I found his lectures to be almost as boring as the textbook. His jokes were probably the highlight of the class (which weren't even that funny). Midterm/exam wasn't too bad if you knew the PORTER model &looked over his slides (textbook is long and of little help). If you have a choice though, don't take this prof!
He's smarter and funnier than 90% of the profs at Schulich and relates the class concepts to the real world. Great learning experience, eventhough his tests have little to do with the lecture material.
Terrible instructor. Lectures are unclear and he does some weird things during class. Cannot retain interest, tend to fall asleep in his lecture. Textbook is garbage too.
Likes to assert his authority over students at the student's expense. Will make fun of you and target you to make himself feel better - even if you haven't done anything wrong. Accuses students of surfing the internet, coming in late, etc with no provocation. Interesting subject, but drop the act, stop being an ass and just teach already.
Good but some what quirky teaching skills. Some people may get ofended with his antics. Has good grasp of the subject. Class is very interesting and never boring for me.

Barrows is rare. He is a polarizing figure because some people despise him and others adore him. Personally, I find him to be engaging and honest, you actually learn from his lectures. He is absolutely brilliant. If you're one of those students who constantly ask "will this be on the exam?", Barrows is not for you. Get a nanny, not a prof.
Useless class
Quite possibly the worst professor I've ever had. Not only is he boring, difficult and extremely arrogant, his lectures are altogether useless. His notes are horrible, he constantly goes off on useless tangents and outlines zero expectations for the exam. Moreover, I crammed for hours learning the pages of the text for the final only to find no con
Awful. Unbelievably awful. You can throw the text out and not go to lectures as both are completely useless for the exams. You can cram for hours, but it won't help on the exams. Learned absolutely nothing in this course. Has no clear expectations at all and marks seem to be a lucky draw. Thank goodness they got rid of this pathetic course.
Made **** comments in class. Made the same comments in the same section the following year. Keeps rambling about "the Porter Model" but doesn't actually teach it! In short, his ego is huge, his talent not so much! Probably the worst prof I ever had!
This prof is one of the best at Schulich - he's smart, witty and entertaining. Loved the chats with his wallet. FUNNY!
This professor is not a typical representative of Schulich's dull and mundane professors. This guy's brilliant intellect coupled with his sense of humor makes his classes outstandingly interesting. Do not pick his class if you are ordinary person used to a standard professor image.
This professor is very sarcastic and most students aren't able to understand his humour.. the porter model is a very important concept in this course.. you may study hard and put a lot of hours into the projects but it is very difficult to do extremely well
This guy has a great sense of humour but some people may find it offensive. I found his class really interesting because he brought in real-world examples all the time. He also has great stories to share since he travels all over the world! Just know the porter model and u'll ace the first midterm... the rest depends on yr TA
Best preofessor I ever had. I was able to fully understand what he taught- and was able to discuss it and apply it outside of the classroom.
I loved this prof. While the course material was general and rudimentary, he was a blast to listen to. Mind you if you are an overly sensitive politically correct person then you won't like him. You need to be able to take a joke.
Terrible professor. Fill lectures with jokes but never focus on education. Get little feedback for assignments and projects. Try every effort to avoid him in future courses
You can skip every single class, and read the book befre the exam to get a good grade. Class is just about talking whatever is in the papers. Sometimes funny, and often trying to show how important he is...but easy course.
Has a very satirical sense of humor
Very good professor but many times a rude person.
Good prof. bad humor!
behaves badly, will send out immature emails to groups
I absolutely loved his sense of humour. Very experienced. Attend his lectures. He TELLS you what will be on the exam but students don't write it down. Current events discussed and helps show relevance to classroom learning
What jerk. He is rude to students and disrespectful of other profs. His ego is bigger than his abilities and his jokes are bad. Avoid at all costs!
His content is very interesting and the class lectures help you understand the concepts, but his exams and book (which he authored) are too technical to actually help you learn. You do have to make a lot of your own connections on your own time to learn the material of this course.
Explains concepts very clearly, and has a lot of experience to share, all with a huge dose of humor. It's like attending a comedy show for economics, and what better way to learn the "dismal science" than with laughter! Of course if you are the easily offended, politically correct type, avoid this class. Otherwise, sit back, listen, and enjoy.
Best prof I have EVER had! Made going to a night class extremely entertaining. His humour and insights made the time fly by! My only regret is not taking more of his courses.
Prof. Barrows needs to hurry up and retire. He exudes contempt for York University, the Dean, our classes, and even the students at times. He clearly doesn't want to be teaching; shows up late for class, leaves early from lecture, and often has little prepared. He can be amusing, but often offensive.
Horrible professor who has absolutely no compassion for students. The text book is useless and the lectures are just as bad.
Worst prof I have ever had. Teaches very abstractly, but expects concrete work from us. Never prepares for class, is always late. Constantly picks on and humiliates students. Grading is VERY difficult. He's obnoxious, and arrogant. Always talking about how much money he makes. Disgusting man, should not be allowed to teach. Shame on Schulich.
One of the worse, if not the worst profs at Schulich. Unprofessional, rude and arrogant. No feedback on assignments and makes inappropriate comments in class. Don't even know why Schulich hires him. Stay away from him, you have been warned!
Dave is one of the best professors at Schulich. Yes, his comments may make you uncomfortable and his questions will make your life difficult, but that's exactly what's required. I couldn't have wished for a better jolt from slumber!
The world needs more Barrows. While his teaching style is unorthodox and his loose attachment to the rules may leave some students to believe he doesn't care, they couldn't be further from the truth. Dave is a teacher that provides a hard dose of reality that some students may find hard to digest but they're probably in need of it most.
His way of teaching is out of the box for sure. His teaching style is a reflection of the real world and this is what most international graduate students need, a dose of reality! Participation is key to success in class and if you are smart and have general knowledge, you will succeed and have a pleasurable experience! Enjoy uniquieness he offers!
Professor Barrows is a great Economics professor. He taught us beyond the textbook and tried to instill us an Economist's mind. I was picked in class sometimes but I didn't find it offending. He cares about students and was always approachable. He even set an extra session for those that needed extra help with the lecture content/assignments.
Excellent! Highly Recommended!
Course was interesting but the prof made it worse. Take it if you just want an easy credit.
I didnt expect much from this professor after the bad reviews but i actually liked his teaching style. However, his textbook is useless. He teaches using real-life examples but his exams are textbook based which makes the course a little challenging. His lack of instructions on assignments doesnt help at all. Overall, he teaches well.
Very bad teaching style especially at the start
His application of class theories to current events are very valuable. Excellent learning opportunities as long as you come prepared to class.
Professor is very encouraging! One of the best professors at Schulich! Good humour!
Dave is great but not for starchy people. Even though it wasn't as formal as most courses, I could learn a lot from his stories. Most profs are boring and a few hours of laughter in the week can't be a bad thing :). Highly recommended!
Just fantastic. Best Prof yet!
He makes the course very interesting...at times he can be controversial but you can take him in light. have a good time in his class
Though he has a good knowledge, he is an average teacher and he talks random stuff which he never relates to the topic of discussion. he keeps talking about his achievements which at times is irritating and also he plays very boring music in the class. Over all he is an Average Teacher
The second biggest joke of a Professor out of all my MBA classes. Totally uninterested in teaching, uninspiring, monotone in speech and constantly attacking students with respect to race, religion, political beliefs, sexual innuendos. Some people found it funny - the sheep. One of my colleagues even petitioned the class to complain about him.
