Write more rather than less. Some outside (internet) research required. Hist 15 A/B is a long night class, but very interesting. Hist 15A is a lot more interesting from an art point of view. Hist 15 B had a lot of documentaries that I thought were not
In Ewrt 100A class, it was very easy and helpful. In Ewrt 1b class, it was very hard but still very helpful. If you want to learn english writing skills, I'd reccomend. Careful tho, his essays are on the university level.
I took the course with the concentration on Shakespeare. Really opened my eyes as to why people think Shakespeare was a great writer. His requirements are University Level for sure. Essays are hard but you can do it. Keep talking to him to get guidence.
He's the most difficult prof I've had at De Anza. He's also got this rather acerbic sense of humor, e.g., calls this the age of illiteracy. But I also know people who've really enjoyed his class.
He teaches History of the New Testament in 15B. I hate writing (which was a large part of the class) but he is such a great, funny, & interesting professor that I couldn't help but love his class. He likes students that participate & share their ideas.
Mr. Denny was so incredibly nice and had the most relaxed attitude about eveything. He was always around to answer any questions I had throughout the entire quarter. I also have a much better understanding of Shakespeare's works as a result.
I've become a better writer because of Dave. He gives you the tools, the how-to's to writing with style. Besides teaching well, he's also very nice and understanding. May have a lot more work in his class than other 1Bs, but it's worth it.
I hate this teacher! He acts as if you are in first grade. He makes everyone read out loud. And this takes a lot of time and it is very boring. When you ask him a question it seems like he's attacking you, making you feel stupid. He is a very bad teacher!
He is very relaxed and calm about the class. The class is a lot of work in the sense that you have to write a very long essay for the final. The class takes a lot of work and perserverence but it totally prepares you for university writing.
Great teacher. Reading out load brings the class more into focus. It is university level work but this is collage. He is always willing to answer your questions and give you help.
DON'T TAKE THIS TEACHER! HE SUCKS! HE WILL DROP YOU FOR FAILING ONE TEST!
Dave is one of the best english teachers I've had. He goes out of his way to help his students. As long as you put some effort into the class you should pass with no problem
Total jerk. He ONLY likes students who try to answer every question and never helps you out. He called me selfish for caring about a grade and said I should have just been focused on learning. He was funny though.
Great teacher! I got an A. I did have to work for it, but if you are willing to try, it will come. Funny and very nice guy! I never had any problems, than again I was always willing to participate in class!!! Shakespear ain't easy.
Study of Fiction, Poetry, and Drama. Read the book and you will be fine. The more you are involved, the easier the class will be for you. I have tried taking the course three times and he is the first teacher that was actually GOOD. His papers are generally easy and he is a very relaxed guy who will help you.
Dave is a really great teacher--I missed most of the quarter and turned in assignments late and I got a B! I found it easy because I like to write anyway, but what other teacher would give you a B for coming to class maybe three times out of the quarter? I learned a lot about Shakespeare too. Great.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. He is extremely helpful. I would definitley recommend all to take his class. I am not much of an English writer, and I can hardly understand Shakespeare; however, if you participate and do all assigned work........gauranteed B, probably A!!! Awesome guy.
One of my favorite teachers at DeAnza. I had trouble handling the cumulative paper due for the final, but had fun in the class and learned a lot. Genuinely enjoyed his class. Extremely helpful teacher.
I REALLY like this guy's teaching style. The stories that he has selected are all easy reads and not boring at all. The writing assignments are clearly thought out. A long haired hippy like myself, I'd recommend him to anyone.
he rocks!!! this guy has a sence of humor and pokes fun at his own beard. Though he is rough on grading essays and test are only 10 questions each which he gives little feedback on without going to him on your own he has great lectures and the book is usefull long after you've taken the class.
Professor Denny offers a very challenging yet rewarding course I highly recommend him
This class is quite enjoyable, with some boring moments. Denny knows what he is talking about and very open to many views. He is willing to help you out if you need it. Quizes, essays, and grading are all very fair. I would take him!
Challenge bears the fruit of success. Great teacher! Subtle, yet witty humor makes his lectures worthwhile. Unlike many professors, Denny is willing to aid his students. Paying attention in class and implementing his teachings will usher you to an A. I highly recommend him.
Good class if your talkative. He does not grade hard, and quizes are easy if you read. I do recommend him.
I wish I had instruction like this earlier! Denny is clear and concise, and very helpful. FOLLOW the guidelines for papers, complete the outline, and the paper writes itself!Could be a little nerve-wracking for very shy people because you read some of what you've written out loud.Just do it,get A.
Recommended class!! you can learn a lot but not hard as long as you read the book and go to class. Good teacher!
clear and helpful. organized and you know what to expect. will help ifyou come to him early. probably not a class for really shy students because he expects you to speak up and participate. 3 essays, couple of quizess, 1 final. he makes the class fun and intresting! a great exprience.
Man what a great teacher. All his lessons are extremely clear, and he is very helpful. But you CANNOT procrastinate. As soon as he gives you the info you need to do an assignment, start on it RIGHT AWAY. His class is SO MUCH easier for people who don't wait until the last minute. 3 papers, 1 final essay, and a research paper.
LOVED IT! I LOVED HIS CLASS AND IT WAS A TOTALLY FUN LEARNING EXPERIANCE! TAKE HIS CLASS!
great teacher!he gave clear instruction for what he expected in every assignment.learnt a lot about literature from him.the 3 papers and 4 in-class writings arent very difficult, but u can feel the magic of the literature's composition. i got A in his class because of my not-so-hard work. tips: start the research paper earlier! it is not very easy.
Denny is awfully nice! He helps you, encourages you, and makes you feel GOOD about yourself. A lot of EQ is at work!
A great guy who likes to share his love of Shakespeare by taking you on a trip to Oregon for the Shakespeare Festival. Only problem was the trip contains a huge group of SENIOR CITIZENS!!! Book a single and buddy up with someone, it can get very uncomfortable.
probably the best english professor i have ever had. EWRT 1B is generally alot of work by the nature of the course. Dave, however, really teaches you how to become a good writer and helps you to prepare for the "big bad universities," as he calls it. Very helpful and insightful, he really loves what he teaches and he does it with passion.
great teacher. not an easy A. be prepared to work. must attend class. heavy on participation points. very helpful and willing. a lot of reading and paper writing but you will actually learn something in his class. he cares about his students' success.
Great teacher! i felt a little rushed on some of the essays (specially poetry) but otherwise no problems. Gives pop quizes that aren't too hard. He's enthusiastic about teaching. i enjoyed this class
this prof. sucks. his grading is tough never able to get a B in any of the three short essays. there is a research paper and it is worth 20% of the final grade. yes this is an english class and it shouldn't be easy, but he is just freaking hard on grading. not recommend.
Great Professor! If you can, take his class. You won't regret it.
I had him last Spring quarter. Very hard grader. He wants you to use his exact vocab words on his quizzes or you will NOT get points (not lenient). I am usually an "A" student, but here I got a "B-" borderline. You have to read DAILY for his class... Not recommended, you're better off finding someone else. Not satisfied.
Reading assigments daily, must come to class, be ready to do work/discussions the next day. He's the most difficult prof I've had at De Anza.
Great teacher, took his class summer session people must be lazy not to do well in his class. I have only become an even better writer because of his class.
Professor Denny is a really plain teacher. He profess with recycled wit and swoons the class to a bore every single morning. He expects every single students to write like a professional and to write under his own style; disabling and uninspiring students to explore their own. Did I also mention a reading assignment every night? Avoid at all cost.
Really nice guy, will help with any sort of problem you might have. Actually helps you write better papers instead of just 'getting through the course'. Recommend to everyone I know that will be taking the course
I got C in his class. He gives a lot of homework, and grads harshly. If you want C for sure take this teacher.
Mr. Denny is a great professor! His lessons are crystal clear. He is the kind of teacher that loves what he does and although his grading is a bit strict he helps you get by the class. reading is mandatory, so you wont get by his class w/out reading.
Easy going guy, but hard on papers. Man, I found out the night before the final that half our grade was due on the week of our finals (one last research paper and a final exam). I got an A, but I had to constantly ask for questions to get it right. I never got lazy in the class, or else I'd be left behind.
He is THE BEST EWRT teacher here at De Anza. There is barely any work to do, just a few essays to write, where he grades fair and it's not hard at all. He taught me a lot, improved my writing skills, and encourages students to write with our own styles, not the conventional rules.
This is the best professor you can take for EWRT. His essays are due at the end of the quarter, so if you are a bit organize and start your papers on time, you shoulndt have any problems to get an easy A in the class.
Does everyone love him because he's easy? Do you really think you will go far with that mindset? Denny is a great teacher; my knowledge of the Bible increased...I don't know, he just seemed a LITTLE full of it, and would always make sorry jokes. I felt at times that he spoke just to hear himself talk! He gave me an A, so w/e!!
cool english class. read lord of the rings and watch movie every class. a lot of writing but it's good cuz it improves your writing a lot. i got a's on all my essays. id say write a solid, strong, interesting thesis and you'll probably get an A. if you need help, just go ask him; he's a nice guy and makes it clear for you. writing focused class
This teacher gives you 4 zero automatic out of the class when you have to memorize the noun, adjective, adverb n so on. I think this teacher is so COMPLICATED!
AMAZING Professor, at first you might be intimidated by him, but honestly, he's super nice, super fun, and super interesting. All you gotta do is listen and attend his class. A lot of journal writing involved, but it's well worth it!
doesn't take attendence. in class: write journals for every class session which he collects at the end of the quarter. watch lord of the rings I, II, and III. whole class is based off of lord of the rings. this includes the 3 essays, journals, and final. he grades the essays pretty hard, but overall, the class was interesting
mr denny is a great teacher. unlike other english teachers, mr. denny takes his job seriously and tries to make every single one of his students a better english student. he is an easy teacher if you do the work but hard if you dont. put some effort into the class and the output will be rewarding.
i guess he's easy to pass, but if ur aiming for an A, expect to put a lot of effort into it. don't take this class if u already have a pretty loaded schedule!! We read on average 25pages/night. If u fall behind in the reading, it sucks! mr. denny may seem like a nice guy, but if u really talk to him, he's actually not that nice...
Mr.Danny is a great professor. He is true intellectual. Class is fun and extremely interesting. We had 4 essays on "The Lord of The Rings." Its a lot of reading; 150pg every week but believe me its worth of it and you are in college so get used to it. Besides, you'll learn a lot about reading and writing and research in his class. JUST TAKE IT
breaking through is the textbook
He uses great online resources instead of a textbook, and refers to them every class. He's a funny character who will always keep you awake. EVERY class revolves around the Lord of the Rings, but he makes sure that each class is a new experience. Best professor I've ever had. I've never enjoyed writing papers until the one I just completed.
THE BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!!! He is amazing, helpful, caring, thoughtful I can keep going on.. Anyone who thinks bad of this teacher obviously didnt work hard enough for a good grade because he goes over and beyond to help you! I have never had such a wonderful teacher I wish all of my teachers were as amazing!! TAKE THIS CLASS!! :)
THE BEST TEACHER EVER!!!!I have never had such a wonderful teacher. He is so helpful and actually cares about you learning.. He goes out of his way to help.. this is my second time taking MR. Denny(different class) I wish all teachers were as caring!! Anyone who doesnt like this teacher obviously did not try hard enough for a good grade!!
One of the best teachers at De Anza! He cares about his students so much! The only thing he wants to do is help you pass the class. If you need anything, he will always be there for your help. I highly recommend him, if you're looking for the best teacher around!
I took his English 1A class over the summer & enjoyed it! He's a really good teacher who's enthusiastic about teaching who tries to make his lessons interesting & engaging. Read out of the book every night & did journal entries which he collects at the end. Calls on you to read your journal entries & counts towards grade. Got A/A+ on all my essays.
I took his class on Spring 2012. He is a very nice person and incredibly passionate. I took Read 200 with him and he is very patient and clear on lectures and homework. The book choices are great (The Hobbit)! He is extremely helpful and wants the students to success. He loves to talk about food lol. If you REALLY want to LEARN, take him!
He's quite a romantic. Nice & sweet. Helpful when u ask & approachable just to talk to as well. The books he chose are all easy read but are also pretty deep & touches on different social & personal issues. 1 textbook with clear structure. U'll not only learn to write but learn abt the different aspects of life as well. Easy A if u put in effort.
His class is easy as long as you read the book that is assigned. He will call on you to read your journal, so better do it everyday.
Nice person, easy pass
I am extremely pleased with this teacher Pros: Lenient essay grader Clear explanation Amusing, friendly personality Lets class out early on due days for essays Offers in-class essay help for those struggling on essays Cons: Pop-quizes (Usually predictable, based on syllabusreading pattern) I would recommend this professor
Really cool guy! He is very chill and relaxed. However, his class is very boring with a monotonous plan everyday. Most people never showed up unless to write an in-class essay (1040 people would show up daily). He is really helpful though, willing to help however he can (he even lets you email him for advice and quick look-overs).
He really teach you how to write from a sentence , It's also very useful for the international students. Even though the homework might be more than other teachers , but it's really helpful, and he is a cool guy.I want to take his 211 class but he dosen't teach it, what's a pity!
makes u write a journal at the end of every class and chooses random people to share it and gives pop quizzes, thats all i disliked about the class. most people didnt even show up and passed. pretty much all u have to do is write ur essays (which he grades super easy and is willing to help u with) and read in order to pass
Great teacher there are a lot of pop quizzes ,but typically when you have to read the textbook on the schedule there is a pretty high chance of pop quiz. Overall, if you make a decent effort to learn and do all of the reading, getting and A shouldn't be too hard.
Nice teacher. Easy homework. Easy class
Love his class! Inspirational! he's very very nice, and he is a writer! probably the best in de anza!
Dave is a really good teacher. I highly recommend taking his classes.
Professor Denny is a great teacher! He's got a great sense of humor and is very knowledgeable. He's approachable, genuine, and gives good feedback. Do the work, put the effort in, and participate and you will do well.
He is kind of vain in his ability, but I think it's fine because he's really good. He says that why you need to discuss and speak in writing class, let's just write. Most of time in class is writing and taking quizzes. Be careful with pop quizzes. He doesn't tell you when you have quizzes so you need to read book carefully and be prepare. 1qz/2week
Good and easy just stay on top of your work
Denny's class is GREAT if you're an English major. The texts studied were extremely helpful in developing my writing skills. Cons: Likes to call on students to read aloud written responses. All "pop-quizzes" are open response (he drops hints the class before if there will be a quiz). Participation and keeping up with assigned reading is necessary.
I really enjoyed Denny's english class. Though there is a lot of reading, all the books were fantastic! Every english class will have a lot of reading, but he makes his very enjoyable. He goes over the reading in class to help take notes for your essays. Easy grader on the essays and he gives you until the end of the quarter to turn in all essays!
I enjoyed his class, mostly because there isn't much work that were given. He assigned many writing assignments that help to build up the skills that needed to improve. Very clear instructions, but lectures might be boring for some.
He gives a lot of homework. if you don't like speaking to the class then don't take it because he makes you read out loud and almost every class. you'll get credit for reading to the class. if you miss 5 classes he automatically will drop you without you knowing .
Dave Denny is an awesome instructor! I never had a problem with the guy. He states things clearly and is very organized with his students. He's very understanding and helps us with anything we need. He talks about reviewing, we study for the things he gives us, and really, all you gotta do is try your best. He wants to see your full potential! :)
Dave is an awesome guy! I had him for EWRT 200 over the past quarter. I'd recommend anyone to take his class. He is a very nice and cares about your learning. Make sure you attend class! Reading and writing is necessary for every homework assignment. It is not hard, it's just busy work.
Super cool dude! Class is very peaceful and laid back, yet still efficient(which my anxiety appreciates). You read aloud quite often but nothing is forced and I feel like I got less scared of doing so. Attendance isnt necessarily mandatory but it does count as participation. A very nice non-intimidating cool guy really recommend professor Denny!
I really enjoyed his class. There was not anything that I found difficult. We just read one book and take some quizzes about the context. We also do a good amount of writing but it is not too crazy. He gives you some extra credit towards the end so make sure to take advantage of that.
Your participation matters and you have to read the required text each day before class and write essays for him. He gives good feedback and he is nice but he expects you to have his class as a priority and the other classes on the back burner and give his class our full attention.
I LOVED his class. Read the Odyssey, discussed and done some writing in class. 4 reading quizzes, super easy, do all you hw to get 100marks. Brief essays were easy, research essay was simple. It's an English class so don't expect to have little writing. Super easy English class, and I feel like I learned a lot.
Get ready to write a lot for this class. The homework is easy just a quick summary on The Odyssey and vocab, but you shouldn't procrastinate on it or it will catch up! Only two essays then a final exam paper. He is nice when talking one on one. I would recommend getting help from the WRC for the papers you write. He is a tough grader on essays.
On the first day of class, I was very skeptical of Dave. Making us read a 450-page Odyssey book? But then I saw the pace of the reading and then I calmed down, its 2 chapters per week (30 pages). f you can't keep up with that then I promise that you need tutoring lessons. The entire class is focused around the Odyssey and its easy if you focus
I loved his class!!! The Odyssey is such a run read and its great. Get ready to talk out loud but it makes the class fun! He is so so nice and so pleasant to be around. You wont regret taking his class!!!!
Personally, I believe that as long as you showed up to class and at least knew a little bit of what he was talking about, then you should be good to go. There were a bunch of small writing assignments, but they weren't difficult at all. He didn't use Canvas, though, so grades were pretty much up in the air unless you asked him.
Writing assignments: 17 Journals, 6 Brief Essay Tests, 2 large format essays. Req Books: The Odyssey and The Penelopiad If you like writing and discussion, this class is for you. Workload is initially comparable to any other online class, but quickly loads up after the first 3-4 weeks. Instructions are often unclear. Good personality though.
Homework is 1-4 journals every week with an occasional essay test and reading quiz. There are only two essays but the they are stacked near each other. He expects that his class takes priority over any other class that you take. Participation is a zoom meeting every week where you read out to the class.
Prof Denny mentioned, handful of times, EWRT 2 is about critical thinking, so the writing assignments prepare students for university-level writing. Some weeks are light, with only 1-2 journal entries, but other weeks: upto 3. HOWEVER, he opens up a new module every Fri., giving students 1 week to complete the assignments. Time management->success
This class was really difficult because even though I did pretty well overall on my assignments my grade remained a B. He is a really hard grader and doesnt provide extra credit. I do not recommend taking this class.
Professor Denny is an excellent resource for students to learn how to critically read and write from. His feedback is constructive and given when needed. If you already have a good grasp on writing you may not be pushed enough in this class. You will read The Odyssey and The Penelopiad in this class and I loved the way we went about each.
I took this class because of his good ratings but DO NOT BE FOOLED! He doesnt provide extra credit and is a hard grader. He sets in ridiculous standards and I dont think this class should be taken with this professor.
The workload starts to get heavy after 2 weeks, so time management is needed. The class is based around The Odyssey and The Penelopiad. There are 2 big essays but the journals, essay tests, and writing assignments help prepare for the essays. He's a tough grader, but you learn a lot.
He gives a whole week to complete all assignments he assigns for the week. He is an easy grader as long as you do as he wants you to. Do the work and readings and you will be fine. However he does not give any extra credit.
We read the Odyssey & The Penelopiad, which are both easy enough reads. I will warn that it gets cumulatively harder as you go in terms of workload, so don't get used to the ease of the assignments in the beginning; it gets rough towards the end. Pay attention to feedback, grading can be rough. Time management is CRUCIAL! It will save your life
It was a pleasure taking Professor Denny's class. I think taking a writing class with him that is small, like creative writing, might be that much better. I think he can improve your ability to know how to write well and to give you a way to look at writing that over time can help you to greatly improve if you pay attention.
wished I payed attention more at the RMP ratings. Hes a hard grader, the amount of work is fine but his grading is strict and the assignments are tedious and annoying. I wouldnt take again :/
Jesus is this guy on one? It is only a gen ed English class and he is assigning an unnecessarily high amount of work. Not only is there a heavier workload than usual, but his grading is also strict as hell. Be prepared to be marked down with no explanation. English professors like this are the reason I hate English classes.
If you like the Odyssey or busy work, go for it. Otherwise, I'd suggest take someone else. So many of the assignments aren't informative nor teach you anything important. The work is easy, just meet the word count. He usually doesn't check for quality. His grading scale is terrible, any lost point drops your grade significantly.
Honestly, the class is easy enough. The writing isn't difficult although he does give multiple writing assignments a week, just make sure you have a basic understanding of the reading and make sure you follow his word count, he's a stickler for it. He gives a full week to complete assignments so if you keep up its a really easy A.
Honestly, his guidelines made me a better writer. It's Odyssey/Penelopiad heavy, yes, but there's plenty of resources avail that'll guide your way through the course. ~3-4 assignments per week with two 700+ word essays, recorded lectures have most of the ideas he's looking for. I got an A- bc he didn't specify +/- grading so calculate carefully.
This class was pretty chill. I'll admit on the first essay I totally bs'd it. Told him I could've done better if I had more time. He gave me a fair score and some good tips. I tried harder on the second one and got an A. Not sure what material he goes over for his other courses but from my experience it was extremely heavy on The Odyssey.
He told us that there are no right or wrong answers to this assignment and to get full points, we have to write enough to fill out the paper, front and back. My paper had more spaces to write on and my handwriting is smaller on average. He didn't have any reconsideration regarding my circumstance and knocked two points off my grade. Horrible person
Attendance is mandatory. The two main texts are The Odyssey and one book related to the Odyssey you can choose out of 3. Yes there is a lot of homework. Usually 2 writing responses with 2-300 words each and an essay that is 500 words, but it is doable. If you want to become better at writing, definitely take his class. Very nice and caring teacher.
Denny kept glazing The Odyssey but tbh the book is overhyped. He grades based on vibes.I cooked up some pretty controversial opinions but Denny wasn't amused. We're assigned to free-write for 30 min and graded on if both sides of the paper were completely filled out.I rambled and didn't even follow the prompt most of the time but I still got a 100%.
Denny's EWRT2 class is a mixed bag - the workload is heavy, but engaging with the material can pay off. Assignments emphasize quantity over quality, but unstuck ai helped me stay on top of the busy schedule. Overall, a challenging yet manageable course if you're diligent.
This professor has shown his care for his students multiple times in and out of class(online). Work loads are reasonable and improvement is the class goal. He is quite humorous and is open-minded. Anything you want to ask will be answered honestly and nicely. We did have to purchase books for this course, but it was for good reason.
Very nice and down to earth prof, the online portion is watching his lecture vids which are very helpful and a 500 word weekly writings. the books were for my quarter, MynameisLucybarton John Aimless love all very light books you write 3 essays on the book 1 research paper on the author. Always helpful in class don't be afraid to ask any questions
We did need to buy a physical copy for the book we needed to read and write in a journal nonstop 10 times in class, but don't be discouraged from those aspects of the class. Considering how Dave Denny provides feedback to online assignments and helps them if need be, he's really caring. If you try or care, you'll won't regret taking the class.
