Dave is a real nice guy, but sometimes he moves to fast in class. He does make it up by giving plenty of extra credit to help you pass.
Dave seems to be a cool guy. I wish he would be a little more organized. he seems like a slacker. It would be nice to see him help us learn more. Overall he seems to be an ok teacher.
****.
Dave is a real nice guy. Very easy going. I think he is a hippie. He explains and reviews everything, has a website where you can see answers to homework and tests. He gives out a lot of extra credit and gives you time to turn in late homework. i slacked off in that class, but i was still able to get a B.
I enjoy Dave's class. His test's are a little over the top, but for the most part he's a very helpfull teacher. Yes, is kind of gross, but who cares he's just a teacher.
He'a a reaaly great teacher. I hate math, but atleast he tries hard to make you understand it. He's totally a hippie & sometimes that makes it worth while to show up. He's totally cool about late homework. I think he should write his own math book though. I spent like $120.00 on my book & never opened it because he writes his own stuff.
If you are not a math person he is the teacher to take. You have 2 weeks to turn in your h/w, tests are open notes and he is really helpfull (Funny too you'll love his silly jokes)
Funny, engaging, very cool about homework due dates and such. I loved his class, and it wasn't stressful, though it was sometimes hard.
Does not use book.Terrible on all counts.
He was really knowledgable in everything he taught us. You dont use a book, he writes all his own coursework. He has his own little way of keeping you interested throughout the class and also teaches you all these little shortcuts of his to help you along the way that really makes things easier. He's very relaxed on the homework too, its so easy.
He is the best math teacher at napa college hands down. Does not care about homeWork being in on time, does not give chapter test (only mid term and final), he is relaxed but gets the point across and lets class out early because he gets the work done. I got an A and Im not a math person. Highly Recommended. aaa+++
As good as Mr.Fried is ,this guy is his polar opposite. He explains things only once, and absolutely refuses to go over homework. He's got his own agenda. It's definitely not in the student's best interest.Ask his former students.
Great Guy!Funny! Not a good teacher.Arrives 15 minutes late everyday then leaves for another 15 minutes.Tests are very difficult because there is no book to help you prepare for them because he doesn't use one.Students pass the tests cause he lets you make corrections,in other words get your math wiz buddy or the math lab to do it for you.TakeFried.
He is a good techer if you like one that shows up late then leaves to make copies, doesn't require a book, makes you do alot of proofs, do homework that tutors can't help you with. you like to spend hours trying to understand your homework? to get a descent grade you have to work in big groups to understand the stuff.
Ellingson is a GREAT teacher. He does not teach out of a book, but makes notes and posts them on his personal website along with hw and answers. He doesn't believe in deadlines, which is great if you stay focused!
I love this teacher but many have a mixed reaction. No book work, no homework due every week, no crazy stuff. He's real too real at times. He is willing to help but never in class. Midterm and final only..Thats wonderful..but they are harder than another test.
Uses a rainbow of colors on the whiteboard... hilarious... so well versed in his subject requires no book. educational and entertaining, his style of teaching is unique but very effective!
Ellingson will provide you with a lifetime of memories with his off-color humor. He is laid back. Keep up with the work and it helps to go look at upcoming material. When it seems like he doesn't care, he is just tired. It's math people. But he DOES care. He loves to help people in class who genuinely want to learn. Very much enjoyable.
Best nath teaxher ive ever had
Very Funny guy
This guy is great, lots of jokes and he's willing to give you a lot of help if you're interested. Class goes on forever though, good if you're into slow paced classes, but if you've got stuff to do, you can leave early...or not show up, he really doesn't care. Turn in the hw at the end of the semester, you never have to go pretty much
GREAT TEACHER. Never before had any passion for math. No skill at all at math. This teacher not only got me interested in math but helped me understand it in a way none other has done before. He treats all his students as adults ( as all teachers should). I will take him for the rest of mandatory math!
Mr. Ellingson is one of the best math teachers ever. You can ask the most ridiculous questions and he wont make fun of you. He is very clear and will continue to explain until all is understood. stays after class to help-very generous with his time. No book required and open note tests and quizzes. Will definitely take him as often as possible.
I had a horrible time with math prior to taking both math 94 and 106 with Dave. He's fantastic at math and a great teacher, explaining everything slowly and clearly, addressing any questions along the way. Super relaxed and easy going, too.
funny guy helps you out if yu need help.
A very funny man. Has a sense of humor. Has open-note tests and some take home quizes. NO TEXT BOOK required. Mono tone voice but it can be tolorated. Drinks tea or coffee, and may randomly leave the class and come back 20 minutes later.
He's a cool professor. I like the way he teaches and puts his teaching tied together. Open notes/book(but no book required; old edition is fine) on quizes and exams, take home exams. He's easy for ME!! Take his class if you wish to taking one!
First of all I thought I hated math. Thats before I took Professor Ellingsons class. He breaks things down and goes over things in detail unlike past math teachers i've had. His humor makes the time go faster. He does not require textbooks, but it can be helpful. I highly recommend Professor Ellingson.
so much fun lol
NO text book needed. Homework due at the end of the semester. Likes tea, takes long breaks, and has open note tests and quizes.
Honestly the best professor I have had whether math or any other subject. Respects his students and more importantly is a a clear teacher. He is also quite humorous and interesting, keeps the class interesting. His website is a good supplement to the class, has everything need to stay on track.
I love his class. He'll take his time to make sure you understand the concept. Weekly quizzes, but it's very easy. Assignments due in the end of the semester. He can be annoying but it's totally worth it!
Weekly quiz of 1-2 problems 3 tests & non cumulative final. Goes over the material thourghly and is very helpfully. Funny and not boring class.
Class is usually hilarious, he is really clear and great at giving help during office hours. If you just do your homework and do well on the weekly quiz you'll get an A. Also an easy grader.
Best teacher I have had in a math class! I am terrible at math, or so I thought, he made me feel as though I were a genius! I respect him a lot as a teacher and would recommend him to anyone. Just do your HW and you will do well...I got an A!
he spends too much time talking when he could be going over more problems and these problems are not enough to complete the hw which is very hard. not being able to do well in the hw makes it hard to study for exams. quizes are easy, teacher is helpful, but class is really boring. beware of his takehome exam. it is very hard. take at your own risk.
He makes it so easy to succeed, with minimal effort. Show up to class, try and you will pass. I had a difficult time with math before this class. This semester I have gained the confidence to tackle whatever the next semester throws my way. Thanks Mr E.
I hated Math before I took his class. When I finished I was comptemplating Calculus because I felt THAT smart. Dave builds upon what you learn so don't skip class and pay attention. If you do that, you can get away with minimal homework assignments. He really cares about your progress, so ask for help if you get lost.
He's the best math teacher I had! He makes it super easy to solve math problems. Even if you don't get it, he won't judge you for it. He'll simply explain it to you. Also he's very understanding, If you have something going on, you can just email him.I would take his next level classes again.
One of the better teachers I've had. Genuinely cares about student progress and was always available to talk to. Also had an awesome hat.
Cool teacher has his own web sight.
Worst math teacher ever. I passed because I took calc before and already know the material. Puts problems on board and tell you to solve without first introducing topic. So unprofessional. He was on time a total of 3 times. I don't mean 3-5 minutes late. I mean 10-20. Such a waste of time. By far worst math teacher I've ever had. Save yourself.
He doesn't explain problems! Expects you to basically teach yourself everything. He gives you all the tools, but I expect a teacher to teach, not just tell you to figure everything out on your own. He's a nice guy just not a good teacher in my opinion.
Excellent and clear instruction. If you are a competent note taker then the class should go well for you since he allows you to use them on quizzes and exams. Homework was a bit excessive, but you're not expected to do them fully to receive a perfect HW grade. Highly recommended. Don't expect to pass without studying and/or knowing the material.
Great teacher grades really heavy on tests though. No book needed and hw is online. Quizzes and Tests are open note so take good notes. Really funny guy and has a cool website.
The best teacher I ever had. very helpful and funny. I took 3 math classes with him and I got all A's.
Ellingson is my favorite math professor at NVC, hands down. I have taken his classes for two semesters, and aced both of them. Ellinsgon makes it easy to get an A! His quizzes and tests are very fair-they are on the basics of what you learn, he doesn't try to trick you on tests. Also, he doesn't give a cumulative final, just 3 exams a sem.
Teaches you his own version of math. Not really sure if I would take his class again. His test were always exactly what he said they would be. Atleast 25 questions, not too hard, not too easy.. Gives you a few opportunities to earn extra credit. Turn in homework it's a must.. Pay attention it really matters because his methods are different..
If you're the type to learn from taking notes, here's your teacher. Notes are allowed on the test, he'll answer questions when you need clarification, and he's fun. Homework assigned through the semester can all be due anytime before the semester ends, so it's easy to procrastinate. Homework is harder than the exams just to prep you.
This guy is great. For sure it is not an easy A, but if you work hard and practice you'll end up with an A or at least a B. Tests are open notebook (if your class uses a book) but that doesn't necessarily make them easy.
Best math teacher ever. I had already taken calculus and passed, but I hadn't retained any conceptual knowledge. The way Ellingson explains things made everything much clearer and he was able to answer every question I had.
The only math teacher that has successfully taught me math at all. Best at making things relatively clear and will work on the same problem in different ways until you get the hang of it. He's got all day so be prepared to repeat a few of the same things. I'm not good at math but he's made progress with me, and I esteem him well.
Ellingson is a great teacher. I took him for Math120 and although the homework is tough, it definitely prepares you for the exams, which aren't as tough. He has great sense of humor and genuinely lets his class know that you can always come to him for help or if you need an extension on homework. Uses colored white board markers & a blog to help!
Hands down the best math teacher I've ever taken!! I absolutely hated math until I took his class!! He genuinely cares and is highly recommended!!
Ellingson is probably one of the best math professors at NVC! He's laid back and will often crack cheesy jokes. Attendance isn't mandatory, but don't take advantage of that... He posts pics of the work we do in class on his blog. Quizzes are every Thursday. Homework is easy, but will pile up if you wait last minute to do it. I recommend him 100%
First impression, he can be intimidating, he comes off strong but I wouldn't let that get to you. He truly shows he cares about his students and wants success for them. He is really flexible when it comes to quizzes, will let you redo them if you get a bad grade.
Ellingson is an awesome teacher. He is very organized with homework & supplementary material posted to his site. He uses colored markers to better help you grasp difficult concepts and takes pictures of the white board to post on his blog in case you miss class. Really a gem of a teacher! Great sense of humor and plays classical music during class.
Mr. Ellingson is a teacher who cares deeply about his students. He makes his lectures easy to follow and posts photos online if you miss a day. A relatively gentle grader, but the homework was extra credit and the quizzes and exams were the main scoring criteria. I love that kind of class set up, but I know not everyone does.
Mr. Ellingson is a weird teacher, but he's great. He often speaks in the second person, casually makes terrible jokes, and seems like a maniac. He's a very good instructor and clearly cares for his work and his students. He's accessible and make time for students. He doesn't assign homework anymore, which makes grades very reliant on tests.
This guy is hilarious but you have to understand his sense of humor or you'll think he's just crazy. Super nice and compassionate- remembered my name after the first month of class and I hadn't had him as a teacher before. No required homework so grading is based on in-class quizzes and tests. Practice tests are made available before each test.
Ellingson was awesome. Give you everything you need to learn and really wants you to pass. Understands a lot of people are only taking his classes for GE and makes things pretty easy. All you have to do is pay attention and put a little work in. I took this class with 3 other profs and failed with them all, not DJ Ellingson.
Provides practice exams, takes test corrections, offers extra credit, and posts all lectures online. Is approachable, kind, and accommodating. Has a self-deprecating sense of humor. He gives you everything you need to succeed. All he asks is for you to be honest. So don't cheat! Show some respect. If you put in work, you will pass the class.
One of the most chill math professors I've gotten, homework is optional and sometimes worth extra credit, will give test corrections and is willing to help if you don't understand.
Really thoughtful and kind. Emailed him when I was sick and missed a quiz, he told me not to worry about it until I was better. Emailed him when I was late turning in an assignment and he thanked me for my efforts. He provides so much to his students and is always understanding and accomodating. Put in the effort and youll pass for sure.
I've never been a "math person" and this was my first time taking a class since high school algebra. Ellingson explains math in a way that is approachable, fun and practical. He does get moody but genuinely cares for his students and wants them to succeed. Very accessible office hours and gives opportunity for extra credit and make up work.
He's a really great guy who obviously cares about his students. I'm pretty awful at math and pretty early in the semster, he noticed I was struggling which led to a conversation about how to help me. He checks in with me frequently now which I find very uplifting. He doesn't assign any homework which sounds like a student's dream but kinda isn't.
Easy A and I have always been bad at math. He doesnt use canvas so you really wont know what your grade is until the very end of the semester but you can kinda tell by your weekly quiz grades. Super chill. Homework is optional. 2/3 tests were take home. Gives study guides and is always available via email or office hours. Would take agin
Calc 2 course does not suit his teaching style. Great dude who clearly loves what he does. Take a different professor if you're taking anything higher than math 94. The course is set up for you to do a majority of the learning outside of class. He sets up a few equations and works on them for the entirety of class. No textbook is used. Use textbook
Probably wouldn't recommend this professor for any class that's above math 106. Unless, you're used to learning on your own. For our two-hour classes, he doesn't have a solid teaching structure, he instead does practice problems on the board without any detailed instruction or lesson. It's easy to get lost, and the grade is mostly exams and quizzes
Ellingson truly cares for his students and tries to accommodate them as much as possible, so communicate! There are quizzes every end of the week. Ellingson has a tendency to start getting behind in material as the semester goes on, but he won't cut anything unless absolutely necessary, so there may be more self-studying than you're used to.
A few things to say here: He takes a long time to return quizzes and exams - to the point where some were not returned by the end of the semester. The homework can be turned in for extra credit at the end of the semester, DO IT! Be prepared to do more self-teaching than with other professors. He's weird, but competent.
As much as he is not great at explaining things, hes got a very cynical sense of humor. If you learn math better by reading and doing examples on your own, just put in the effort to take great notes because he lets you use them. After exam 1, 60% of the class had Fs, but I was coasting at a low A-. If you did well in Calc 3 and Linear, enjoy ODE!
Easy A, but he's a terrible teacher. Lectures are droning at best and off-topic for most/all of the class period at worst. If you actually want to learn anything in his classes, you should expect to have to teach yourself (he does post his whiteboard work on Dropbox, which is nice). Also, he literally yells at students, so that's fun.
If you have to take this course during this COVID era, Professor Ellingson is NOT RECOMMENDED. He is a solid math teacher in person, and seems to care for the students understanding, but all that is thrown away in an online setting. Either he wasn't ready for the transition, or he flat out gave up, "lectures" consisted of pictures in a Dropbox.
I love this professor but he is lazy. Works fine for in-person but online (COVID) was terrible. I got an A, but don't know my individual scores after Exam1. This was the case last semester too. But this semester made me question if he even grades them, bcz why not upload? Calc3 should be better or I will feel ill-served. He has months to prepare.
Tough class, Dave is not the most organized teacher. Hard me and my fellow students to grasp the topics, causing us to spend time outside of class studying a lot for exams. Exams are very difficult if you aren't prepared for them. He is not a bad teacher though, he tries and is serious about teaching.
If you're going to be taking this class COVID era, make sure to be ready to teach yourself. I was able to teach myself to the material because he would post homework + answers. I would then go to youtube and how to solve this type of problem. The tests were just like homework. Lectures were pictures in a dropbox...
pretty chill professor. Highly recommended.
Took this course as an 'onl asynch' so lectures weren't mandatory, but he did record each one for us to refer back to if needed. Level of difficulty was a 5 because I couldn't follow along with the lectures and ultimately had to teach myself. He grades by only a few tests and quizzes but he did give us a few weeks to complete each one.
His class was very unprofessional. There were a few red flags that just prompted me to drop ( I ended up dropping at the end of the semester ). Starting off - if you like to teach yourself on your own time this class may be for you. Off topic lectures, no assignments posted until NOVEMBER, and no textbook. It was extremely frustrating.
He is the easiest teacher you will ever have. He records his lectures, so you can watch them later if you wish. He does not assign homework, only the tests at the end of the semester which are super easy. Do the work and you'll get an easy A.
One of my favorite professors. Clear lectures and few assignments
106 + 108. If you can manage your time well and are comfortable teaching yourself you'll do fine. If you struggle with either of those things, this class IS NOT for you. Optional lectures, no homework (no way to see progress) roughly 4 quizzes, and 4 tests are sent out damn near the end of the semester. You send in your work and hope for the best.
I would not recommend this professor to anyone; he has you do 3 quizzes, 3 exams, and 1 final. He does not do homework or in-person exams. He will release everything at the end of the semester and either give you a lot of time or no time at all. You will have to teach yourself because he can't teach. I would take this class else where.
Talks more than he does math. Overexplains every single problem and makes it more confusing than it already is. I had trouble focusing bc of how much he talked but maybe that's just me.
He's overall a great professor. However, he does talk a lot and will take a lot of time on each problem. He makes it clear on what his agenda will be for the day..there's quizzes every wed, but no homework so although class isn't mandatory, you should still show up for most classes.
This course ended up being very easy due to the fact that he hardly assigned any work. I don't really feel like I learned a lot because we didn't get any practice. If you're looking to just get a calculus class out of the way this should be easy but If you plan to actually use calculus a lot in the future I would take a more immersive professor
This professor was very nice and easy to talk to. Lectures aren't mandatory but I'd recommend showing up to them. But even if you don't, he posts pictures of the lectures and posts them on canvas for you to access. The class was graded based on tests, so get all of them done and you'll be fine.
The professor was great. He didn't grade anything till after the class had finished but I thought he did a really great job with his lectures. There were online notes and they were easy to access and use. It was very much a class where the effort you put in was rewarded with similar knowledge. Really nice guy and he was also quite funny sometimes.
He's a super genuine guy, although his lectures are very long, and half the time he ends up talking about other topics besides math. Super easy class and sweet professor, but if you want to learn, I'd choose a different professor.
