I had him for critical thinking and he's an okay prof, its a tricky course but he was always there and willing to help if we didn't get something. Not a very fair marker though and didn't really use any examples, i would recommend another prof...
He is the best professor that you can find. If you take Critical thinking you should definitely take it with him. He likes to help students and he would always have time to help you. He is really funny and nice to talk to. He knows what he is teaching and how to teach. funny, full of humor, he is hilarious. The assignments are kinda hard but, you can always ask him for a hand.
Awesome Prof! Not boring like some other profs. Exams and paper are straight forward, just study and you'll do fine and pay attention in class b/c he gives hints here and there of what's going to be on the midterm.
Okay prof at best. Marking is not fair. I got 27.5/30 (92%) on an assignment that i worked extremely hard on and got a B+ where my buddy got 25/30 and got a C+. Seemed to change the grading curve every assignment. If you don't think like he does, good luck

Avoid at all costs taking a course with this man. His lectures are pointless, not to mention his marking. You can get an average of 90% on his assignments and still come out of the course with a C average or lower. Do not take critical thinking with him unless you wish to lower your GPA.
Do not take critical thinking with him!
He's a really interesting prof, however I was required to take this course as a faculty requirement and if philosophy and arts are not your thing, DONT TAKE HIM. Very demanding prof, hard exams and testing. Average -low amount of work. Graded hard.
Philosophy of religion with this guy is great. He's really funny in a geeky sort of way. Reminds me of Ned Flanders, haha. People seem to not like him on this site, but I totally disagree. He explained things very well and his lectures were entertaining. Slight biases towards his own point of view would come out in lectures.. great prof overall
Unfair marking! Do not take a class with him. You will get a bad grade.
Quite possibly one of the most interesting profs at the U of M. The subject is very interesting, he's very helpful, but to get his help you have to go to him, which is good, you are in university. I would recommend this course and prof to anyone who wants to better understand arguments.
I'm in engineering, do I really need to waste my time doing countless homework and assignments for this dumb class when I could be using my time studying something useful? If you're in engineering, I recommend you take this class with a different professor, and listen to me here, for real. IF YOU'RE IN ENGINEERING DON'T TAKE WITH HIM!
The most entertaining prof I have ever had. I took critical thinking with him and he was a very fair marker. Sometimes grades were low but its curved so usually everyone did bad. Not alot of work and if you went to class he explained the assignments really well. I would recomend him.
If you take critical thinking with Hampton, don't expect the "easy A" that you would get with other sections. This guy actually teaches the course the way it was meant to be taught. Nice guy, speak up in class as debating issues makes class more interesting. Very helpful on assignments if you e-mail him. A little wacky in lectures...
Hard marker, unwilling to help outside of class. Business Ethics had NOTHING to do with Business. Very boring. Not the worst, but if you have the choice - avoid.
I really liked this course. I thought Hampton was a great prof, really funny, definitely kept my attention throughout the class. I never went to him for help outside of class so can't say whether or not he made himself available.
He teaches to improve students' critical thinking skills, but there is a lot of weekly homework which I find unnecessary. The mid term was one argument which you had to diagram. which was unfair. If you aren't familiar with the argument topic, you're punished for 30% of your grade even though your assignments and homework were great? Take another p
Great prof. Extremely entertaining in lectures and very helpful if you e-mail him for help with the assignments. lots of homework to do, but it's not worth much mark wise. Would take a course with this prof again. One of the best profs I've had at U of M.
professor was extremely vague with lecture--humorous, and hintful, but vague. if you participate and challenge his views, which should be challenged due to the courses supposedly subjective manner, he will remember your name and burn you on a midterm or exam. best bet is to suck up. i liked the course, not the prof. take any other crit thinking.
Phenomenal Prof, the ppl that gave him a bad rating clearly shouldnt be in Uni. He grades on a curve, so its all relative to the class, he always say "a monkey could pass this" He is so helpful clear and concise, his exams are fair, homework/assignments are there to prepare you are the exams. so it is def not unnecessary.
He is a very good professor. When he says "a monkey could pass his class" he honestly means it as long as you do the homework whether it's correct or not you're at least guaranteed a C. He makes class humorous and enjoyable and whoever gave him a bad rating obviously probably doesn't read the textbook, attend class or just doesn't think critically
Great prof!
One of the worst professor's i've had at the U of M, speaks english well but is unclear about his expectations throughout the entire class. He also marks very hard (for a intro class). He is also a cocky - he really thinks he's a smart cookie and likes to show it to you. I reccomend taking class online, been told its and easy A
Great prof, made a possibly boring subject interesting.
Gr8 & funny prof. As long as you go to class every day, you can get an A no doubt.
Weekly assignments that he tells you EXACTLY what to do on them. He gave us an exact outline of the mid-term and final. Challenging only if you don't pay attention or make a point to learn anything. Curving really sucks though (not his fault).
May skew off topic sometimes.
He's ok
I'm in belief that most students here completely miss the point. Objectively speaking, he teaches the material very clearly, he CLEARLY states the grading curve in the beginning of the class, & he states that if you want to do well you must attend class, as well as he helps students understand difficult issues using relatable metaphors. Great Prof!
Easiest class I've taken. Great prof for it
If art courses arent your thing and you're looking to take up elective courses, DONT take this course, too many assignments and an unfair marker
OK, not gonna lie this course was hard. I'm in Engineering and I took it because it was recommended and I did worse than my friends did in other sections but I do NOT blame Hampton. Definitely intelligent prof, DEFINITELY an interesting class. Don't skip class! Go to him for help!
interesting professor. ever ready to explain stuffs if you do not understand. overall really good.
He is a really good prof. He can be quite funny, but always tries to get his point across. I took the class as an elective and ended up getting an A+. I would definitely recommend him to any and all students. But, not everyone might have the same things to say. The bottom line is that you have to put in effort if you want to pass.
very cool professor. he swears a lot which makes the lectures more interesting and puts your mind at ease. assignments are fairly easy; he gives clues and tips on how to answer some of the questions so attendance is pretty mandatory.
Hampton is an amazing prof, he always keeps your attention duri g lectures and says what's on his mind making the lectures much more memorable. He does give some more challenging assignments towards the end of the semester but as long you pay attention in class you'll do fine. Definitely worth the effort.
Funniest, most entertaining prof I have ever had in University. Doesn't hand out anything so you have to write down the notes yourself. You get approximately 6 homework throughout the semester, no tests, just a final exam. Each class is interesting. He is, honestly, the best. He took his cat to class on the last day of the term and it was awesome.
His awesome Clear lectures Deep intriguing topics You will love it
Great prof, great engaging lectures funny as hell but also really knows what he is talking about. Some of the concepts are difficult but very well explained with many examples
great professor, had him back in my second year, super funny guy and very resourceful. I highly encourage anyone who takes any course that he teaches to ask him for extra help. He's very insightful and is willing to help you out with the assignments and what not. Might just be me, but he's a combination of Jeff Foxworthy, Dr. Cox and Mr. Bean.
Great Prof, had him twice now. gives invaluable feedback, lots of homework/reading, always willing to go the extra mile to help a student out, very funny and very passionate about teaching philosophy. Couldn't ask for a better professor!!!!
Fantastic prof, everything I wanted out of this optional course. Just 6 assignments and a final. As long as you show up to class and pay attention it should be easy. He's also a great teacher with lots of examples and keeps the lectures entertaining and funny.
Great proff, entertaining and gives clear notes on what you need to know. Only 5 assignments (plus a 6th that replaces your lowest grade) and a final, easy to talk to and a fair marker. I hardly used my textbook except for the definitions of some terms. Show up and take notes and you'll do fine.
My favourite professor I have ever had. Absolutely hilarious and his class is tremendously useful and interesting. Strongly recommend taking his course no matter what you are studying.
Best phil prof Got a B cause of the curve was really close to a B+ just did bad on one assignment.
Amazing engagement with the class, very passionate and enthusiastic about lectures. Reading the assigned pages before and after class in mandatory and so is going to the lectures. Tests are mainly based on memorization and being able to evaluate what you learned/memorized. Great teacher and if you stay till the end you get to see his adorable cat.
Hampton was very engaging during lectures, however, he was marking this first year course as if we were Graduate students. He seems always pissed off for some reason and if you ask him anything about the grading you got he gets super pissed. NOT APPROACHABLE and very disrespectful when you see him in his office. Don't take any courses with him.
I took the summer course for Critical Thinking so participation counted for marks. He was a great and engaging professor! Textbook is only really necessary as a supplemental source, his notes do just fine. His tests are difficult but if you did good you know you deserved it. Recommend 100%. Plus you get to meet Piglet at the end of the course!
Hilarious prof. At the beginning of the term I genuinely disliked the course, as knowledge on course material went up I started to love it. He puts notes on the board and then later in the assignments he asks you to list some of the notes he wrote, so be wary and take notes! Overall great course, was difficult but the grades are curved!
You got to be willing to put some thought into the material you do in this class so if that isn't for you maybe Dr. Hampton's class will seem a hard. He is available to talk about assignments before they are due and will try to help the students. Really enjoy his class. Keeps you awake by dropping the odd F bomb here and there. interesting class.
Really funny and chill guy so not very hard to pay attention during class. Notes are taken in class and he expects you to read the chapters before class. Content may be confusing, thus extra reading is important. Replies to emails quickly. Assignments are marked by graders; & so far, I'd say if you put the work in, you'll get the grade you deserve.
Cake. Cake. Cake. Thankful everyday for this man. Love his ability to bring cake everyday.
Loved every single lecture, and looked forward to learning new concepts.
-approachable outside of class -clear about expectations for assignments -gives PLENTY of time for assignments -willing to help on assignments -class exclusive and verbal notes, don't skip! -encourages class discussion -If he says something is a good test question, it's a test question -paces while he lectures and is engaging -throws mad shade
seemed moody but he is really funny. He was like, super clear about what we should and shouldn't do in our answers and he helps students with questions on the assignments. Like, he doesn't give you the answer but he asks questions to help you get the answer or at least get on the right track. He's like a tall skinnier season 1 Walter White.
Funny and energetic as to what he teaches. Make sure to go to class as his test and exam questions are based on the material given in lecture (can use textbook to further your understanding but not needed). Class grade is curved so make sure you're okay with that. Overall great prof.
Fav professor at UofM. He explains difficult concepts very well. For all classes, he gives major hints for what will be on every exam so you know exactly what to study. Effort needed if you want an A. He is clearly an expert in philosophy and his lectures are genuinely enjoyable. Plus he's hilarious. Do yourself a favour and take his class!
He is one of my favourite profs by far. Dave gives amazing feedback that is actually helpful, he is nice, and super smart. When your done this class you will not only pass but you will have actually learned something useful. This course was so amazing and fun!!
Professor Hampton engaged in very interesting concepts, and really made sure you understood them. He was very approachable in and outside of class, as well as gave wonderful feedback on the assignments. However, Careful thought must be put into every assignment and exams otherwise you will receive the mark you deserve.
Dynamic, funny, interesting, and engaging, Hampton is a really well-rounded Prof. He breaks down and makes really accessible really complicated ideas that any low-interest student can come to grips with. Relatively normal amount of reading, maybe erring on the higher side, but his lecture cover the topic more than sufficiently.
Hes hilarious and a very good prof. The material was unlike anything Id ever studied before so it was slightly difficult at first but also very interesting. This was one class I actually looked forward to going to.
A really good prof who sometimes brings his cat to class. What more could you ask for?
Hampton is an entertaining lecturer. He'll lighten things up with his absurd humour, making for nice morning lectures to wake up in & get things rolling for the day. If you don't attend class, it will definitely show up in your grades as sometimes he will literally give you questions he's going to put on the tests.
This is a great professor for Critical thinking or Intro Phil, but I would not recommend him for a higher level philosophy course. I took Phil 2790 with him and he made the material more complicated than it already was. I took Phil 2790 with another professor and all of a sudden the entire material made sense. His teaching style better suits 1290.
prof was really easy to communicate with, and gave extensions when asked, offered to look over exams if you think you deserve a better grade, clearly tells you what is gunna be on exam and even gives the questions sometimes. really funny and always engaging with class, hard to fall asleep when hes so enthuseastic would take again
Super engaging and explains things well. Its actually really unfortunate that I am in happy with Dr Hampton. Very rude at times when asking for clarification on things and makes you feel like an idiot. He also had a few meltdowns in my class which involved lots of yelling and swearing
Hilarious prof and super enthusiastic. Made philosophy my favourite class to go to even though I just took it for a humanities req. Really helpful in office hours. Takes ages to grade assignments but they are easy and the term test was very easy if you pay attention and study. 1 thing I disliked was his tendency to politicize everything. Ez A(+)?
a skillful teacher, explains things really well, very funny
Good prof! The class is easy and full of engineering students. If you don't attend it would be easy to get a B and with attendance it's no problem to get an A. Really funny lectures.
Great prof! Content of course is easy once you get ahold of it in the beginning and Hampton really helps with that. Go to the office hours for assignment help because he leads you to the right answers and is super caring about each individual student. Class is curved and the exam was tricky but if you understand the material your fine. Hilarious!
One of the worst professors I've ever had. He swears in class, is obnoxious, and unprofessional. He is rude when replying to emails and makes you feel like an idiot when you don't understand something. He's not helpful or nice in any way. He is a very tough grader for essays and tests. Avoid this professor at all costs!
Great overall prof.. Made an otherwise boring class quite enjoyable and fun.
Funny prof. BUT on his final exam there was a 40 mark question about the jian ghomeshi case making students write if they believe it which was super inapropreate?? After the exam was fine with stating his opinion that the women ghomeshi assulted were probably lying and overreacting? I thought he was a good prof but exam was really unconfterable
Swears constantly in class, which is entertaining at first but it gets old fast. Frequently brought up topics that were very uncomfortable and inappropriate, which were in no way related to the course. Tough grader, in general the course is pretty awful. Would not recommend at all.
Prof Hampton is a very funny guy to listen to, but he tends to get off track and off topic quite often. For a first year student out of highschool, this class may be difficult and would not take as a first year. I've heard that Prof Hampton also doesn't follow the generic course material for PHIL 1290. To do well you'll NEED the text book for most.
His lectures can be very inspirational, but I think he was preaching to the wrong crowd. He's very passionate about the ethics of philosophy but my class was made of first-year students who didn't care. Just make sure to read prior to the lectures or else you'll be lost. Type as fast as you can, and worry about the neatness of your notes later.
One of my favourite profs! He is very dynamic and knowledgeable. The course was so interesting and his personality made the content even better! Very cute cats too. Take a course with him, he's wonderful!
He liked to ask a lot of questions in class and talks really slow. He didn't go really deep in explaining the basic concepts in class, you'll have to read the textbook. And his notes aren't very good either.
Pros: He tells you what you need to know for the assign/exam. Cons: You need to put in time to get a good grade (readings). Questions are smtms tricky and his notes aren't that good/ kind of unorganized. Overall he's a great guy, kind of entertaining, but hated his class. No offence but the course was dry, tricky, and a classmostwouldnt doagain.
His notes are not as helpful as reading the textbook, speaks very slow in lectures, ask too many questions, and doesn't do so well at explaining new concepts. Lectures are dragging yet unclear. There's no standardization of correct answers. This course has 3 assignments that rely heavily on writing, be prepared!
You will either love or hate him. His class is designed to make students feel uncomfortable, especially lecture content. If you are able to articulate your thoughts well everything is open for debate, he wants you to prove him wrong. Grades are based on how well you express your ideas as opposed to simply parroting his own words back to him.
Decent Professor. Spends a lot of time working with theory in a practical way. Palpably arrogant, belittles students regularly, spends most of the lectures trying to prove to everyone he's the smartest in the room.
A good example of everything wrong with academics. He's very rude. Unless you come to the same highly subjective conclusions he does you won't do well. Loves to bring completely irrelevant political and religious opinions into class and belittles you if you don't agree with him. Throws tantrums. "Smart guy" syndrome with no real accomplishments.
If you can avoid taking a class with him then please do unless you want your gpa to be lowered!!!!
I loved taking PHIL 1290 with Dr. Hampton. The examples in class were explained very well and they were very interesting. He was able to turn a normally boring subject into something very interesting. I do have to admit the assignments are decently tough but as long as you start them early and work hard you will be fine.
Make sure your values align with Dr Hampton because if it isn't his view it's wrong. Makes what should be basic argument analysis more difficult but making everything subjective. Swears a lot. Makes you feel stupid if you have a question. And honestly just a pretty angry man.
Not sure why people give him such bad ratings. I have never had a professor that responds to emails as nicely and is always willing to check over your work that the grade markers grade. Assignments are a little tough but he always provides good feedback on how to do better. Would 100% take his class again
I found Dr. Hampton to be quite rude at times. HIs lectures tend to be boring and he asks a lot of questions when teaching the material. He is also a very tough grader. I suggest to take this class with someone else if you are able to.
Hes a nice guy and explains the material well in class, but came off as rude through emails after class.
Your enjoyment will be highly dependant on how interested you are in the course material. David does his best to make the course material approachable with interesting anecdotes. The grading criteria is extremely straight forward. If you think he marked something unfairly, he will take a second look upon request. Overall positive experience.
Clear on what he looks for on tests and what is important. No need to read the readings as long as you watch his recorded lectures or attend class and take notes. Overall, good prof that makes relatively boring material as interesting as possible.
One of the best philosophy professors I have taken. Really calm during lectures and explains concepts very well. His study guide is really helpful in preparing for midterms. He's a really nice guy, I'm not sure why others are saying otherwise. Will definitely take him for my other philosophy classes
Dr. Hampton has a very straightforward way of teaching; lots of examples and definitions. He tells you what you need to know, and what to study, and a lot of tips / what to look out for. There is quite a bit to study, so you have to put in time. I found his humour funny, and he is a Star Wars fan so that's a plus Take him if you get the chance!
He made dry topics sound very interesting through the incorporation of personal stories and jokes. Had great interaction with the class even when it was online. Always provided an outline of what to study before each midterm. Grading was extremely fair. Focus on his suggested essay structuring and take good lecture notes!
He was hillarious, but not good when it comes to approaching problems. When the marker did a mistake, I came hoping he could help me, however, he did not, even tho a person got the same answer & gave them a mark. Also there's only 3 evaluations, 2 test worth 30 and final worth 40. So do yourself a favour and save your money, don't take this class.
Take notes in class otherwise you'll have no idea what to study when test comes around, he won't post notes. He is clear on what will be on tests. Overall Dave is a good and fair prof and I'd recommend.
Great lecturer! His teaching is engaging and fun. Posts all notes so you can pay closer attention to discussions in class. Great reviews and lots of tips for exams and tests
Dave is a nice guy, however, when it comes to his teaching. I would understand the content than in class, he would go ALL THE WAY AROUND to answer a simple question and confuse me all over again. Would NOT take it in summer. Don't expect an easy A.
it's possible to get an A with him but remember the papers you write for this class are graded by someone with a formal education in law school. makes sense then why the class average tends to be low when it comes to papers. most students are not yet experienced writers in first few years and it is on this basis i find his grading a bit unfair.
the reason why i vw'd is because the class relies on the two 30% tests to pass and the 40% finals. you'd do well if you listen and rlly get the topic but the things he chooses to teach are sometimes hard to understand if you don't have the background knowledge of it or some words. he supports israel. free palestine.
Very funny teacher, gives additional bonus marks easily as well. Even had a class only for telling a story he had. Don't take it though if you aren't good at self-study, it's hard.
Dave is a smart guy. History, politics, he knows it all. But what holds him back is his needless profanity and tendency to drop his core beliefs on the class. He is clearly anti-Trump and atheist, something he makes known pretty often. He doesn't make any effort when pronouncing foreign names for some reason.
Amazing guy honestly, never wanted to miss a single class. The material was very straightforward and the textbook he recommended really helped since it included practice questions with the included ones given out in class. You won't regret taking his class. A professor with great humour who won't make you feel so bored and sleepy in class!
you could do really well in this class if you pay attention to his lectures where he literally tells you everything you need to know for the tests. can't say he's my favorite but never got a dull moment in his classes. the prof is good not just bcz he's full of knowledge but bcz he really has a way making his points across. go to his lectures folks
He is funny and often swears during lectures. He always gives a bonus point for drawing a picture of a cat on your exam which is nice! He is very clear about what is expected of students and what to expect for exams. I would highly recommend him to students who like structured and well-organized classes with a bit of comic relief!
Really great prof! The class was sort of difficult but he taught it well and I honestly learned a ton. His style of teaching really helped me retain the class material which was super helpful for exams. I know some people didn't love him but he was really good at teaching and definitely knew his stuff. I would recommend taking a class with him!
Amazing professor! He would scan materials and provide them to us so we wouldn't need to purchase a textbook which was super considerate of him! To boost student morale, he gives a bonus point on exams for students who draw a cat. Very nice man and super clear about what is expected for exams! I majored in Philosophy due to taking his class!
He's funny and energetic, very much a character. Really helps me from falling asleep during lectures. He makes expectations pretty clear for tests and exams.
Dave's lectures are engaging and informative, with a touch of humor that keeps things lively. Though the course material can be challenging, his clear explanations and useful study resources like Unstuck AI make it manageable. Attending class is a must, but the effort pays off with strong learning outcomes.
He is a funny professor, he explained things thoroughly and as long as you attend his lectures you are pretty much set, he also focused on things that were important to more then one faculty rather then just philosophy if you are taking this course for anything but especially a pre-requisite I would highly recommend.
Charismatic and entertaining through and through, also flexible whenever necessary.
Really fun professor and interesting course!! Would definitely take a course with him again.
Professor Hampton is one of the greatest instructors that you could possibly ask for. His lectures are engaging (aided by his sense of humour), his lessons are clear, and he makes the criteria for examinations very clear. He is the reason PHIL 1290 is one of the most enjoyable courses you can take at the University of Manitoba right now.
Good prof, obviously loves his profession. Swears a lot, he's pretty funny. Explains concepts extremely well, also gives a full breakdown of every upcoming test with specific studying suggestions. Loves his students and wants them to succeed. Sometimes a little rude to students who do not answer questions well, but not badly. I recommend him.
He's great professor. I took this class an elective, and unfortunately I ended up dropping the course. Lecture was very hard to understand. I wouldn't take it again.
