Pretty good instructor. A little sketchiness on some essay grades though.
Gets defensive when you ask him a question
Dave is the seriously like the best teacher I've ever had!!
Best PE prof! He knows his stuff and has an obvious love for what he does. Great guy!
good guy / easy marks. Doesnt have a clue what he's talking about. Dont listen when he tries to teach you lunges, completely incorrect. He doesnt know what he's talking about 1/2 the time. 100 % muscle recruitment, i dont think so.
I found him to be an amazing teacher. He helped me out alot and I did well in his class.
Dave was a great prof, was very fair when marking students on labs. And yes he does know his stuff, some people ought to be less arrogant since you know the prof is the one testing you.. anyways,Dave was always there to answer questions and is remembers your name not just that you were in his class.
Kato is a lot of fun, adds cartoons to his slides. Overall a great prof
Despite this one of being the hardest class, this was one of the best classes I took because Dave has this way of teaching you. He gets to know the students and has interesting tactics to help you memorize anatomy. Be expected to do a lot of self reading though !!! His notes aren't enough, alone.

was a great prof, makes things interesting and makes the difficult material easier to learn thru his labs. Always makes time for help and has many aids as well.
An excellent educator. Very well prepared. Sincere. Friendly. I highly recommend Dave.
Awesome teachers - really knows his stuff - with an amazing background to back it up - makes class more fun then he needs to - great guy
Awesome teacher. He gets to know you as a person, and not just a student. He'll take the time to help you, and he is very thorought...knows his stuff. Great with practical too. His tests are hard, but he tells you they're hard, so they're fair.
Has a real intrest in what hes teaching and is always there to answer questions. The exams are hard but if you keep up there not to bad
great notes, friendly and sweet stories for almost every part of the body. if you can get him, do it.
He knows everything about anatomy etc, and has a lot of applicable experience. His subject knowledge ends at anatomy etc. though. Sometimes he tries delves into chemistry for an explanation and when he does, he is often contradicted by my chemistry textbook. Feel free to rely on him for questions pertaining to anatomy etc, but nothing else.
Excellent teacher. So nice. Makes anatomy fun and he's very kowledgable
he is awesome. the tests are hard, but if you keep up and study hard, they are fine. he is very fair, if you think you should have gotten a mark somewhere, he'll take a look at it and talk to you about it and give it to you if deserved. he's very knowledgeable and helpful. funny stories all the time too
An ok prof. Was very unclear about what was being tested on for the midterms and final making it very hard to know what to study in the ridiculous amount of material. Sometimes a bit arrogant or "I know everything" kinda person but he did have some pretty funny stories to make class interesting
Gets quite defensive when you question his teaching and has a "know it all attitude" towards everything (but who wouldn't if thats the field they specialize in) Rushes through concepts where you can fall behind easily. Very funny/friendly prof.
He does not help. He treats the students like they are worthless and have no knowledge. He is rude and thinks that he knows everything. Let's be honest...a PhD means nothing if you don't know how to be a human.
Dave knows his stuff, and he shows that. You could look at that in a bad way and say he's a stuck up "know it all" but at the end of the day, the more information he gives you the more knowledgeable you are. There's a LOT of material that goes in depth, but he explains it in detail and makes sure everyone understands before he moves on. Funny guy!
He's a tough grader. He can also be rather cocky and teaches his lectures as if he is the best in the world. This course does not match up what so ever with what other professors are doing for this class and he needs to reevaluate. Expect the difficulty and homework of a 300 level class as there is three essays with 5-10 scholarly references.
I loved his class. He is very knowledgeable and made his classes interesting. I haven't missed a class yet due to really enjoying the lectures. He HATES it when people miss class. His exams are very tough but if you study you do well.
Like all the other ratings on here about David, he does have a "know it all attitude." He is a Dr. yes but sometimes I think he likes to think he is a physician teaching not a professor. The guy does know his stuff very well but maybe a little too cocky. His essay grading rubric is stupid though as he puts lots of emphasis on proper APA format.
Great prof! Made lectures interesting and fun! Although the journals are somewhat excessive for HEED 110, a very easy and enjoyable class.
Ignore the "know-it-all"comments... he has years of experience, and trust me, its useful.. profs should know a lot about that they're teaching. He gives you mnemonics to help remember tough subjects, and huge hints about exam content. Show up, study, read the textbook, and you will do fine. Hard course, Dave understands that and helps you succeed.
Material doesn't match up to other HEED110 courses. Supposed to be fairly easy class but spent more time on his essays than I have any other class. Dumb, useless assignments. Very "old school".
Worst prof at MacEwan. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS with Dave
Dave knows his stuff well but is tough on you. Lots of heavy assignments sometimes needing to include over 10 scholarly articles! If you are looking for an easy HEED class, I wouldn't recommend this class. All in all, I am happy I took his class because it helped me practice referencing and writing and made me work hard.
Dave was a really good professor! He always responded to emails quickly, and was always available outside of class. I chose this as an elective, so he made it really easy to pass the class. The only complaint I have is he's superrrr specific on format, and if you don't do it his way you get docked serious marks.
Dave's a knowledgeable guy and it almost seems this course material isn't difficult enough for him so he looks for ways to take it more in depth. Exams were very fair and he lets you know what he expects on papers, but there's high standards to meet. More work than expected for a 100 level, but if you meet his criteria it's easy to get a good mark.
If you're looking for an easy elective, do not take this class. With three fairly difficult papers and a huge group project it seems like he is taking this class way too seriously.
Worst class ever. Awful prof. Useless assignments, and exams very hard. Doesn't match up to other HEED classes. Don't take this class if your looking for a GPA booster
Not specific of what he expects, he is a tough grader. DO NOT take him if you are looking for a GPA booster. Extremely disappointed with him.
Dave is good at teaching. He isn't boring. This class is generally an easy class BUT dave makes it hard. The content is easy to learn, however dave assigns A LOT of papers. I had 4 papers in his class. One of the papers was only 1200 words yet he wanted TEN scholarly articles. The excessive papers are the reason I didn't get a B+.
Dave is a great guy but his curriculum is heavy. Lectures are full of content and labs are even more hectic. Be prepared to study and DO NOT skip lectures and labs or else you will fail. You will need to put in extra effort to pull of an A in this class but It is definitely possible. I personally loved the content and Dave was extremely fair.
DO NOT i repeat DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU HAVE A REASON TO LIVE WORSE PROF IN MACEWAN SINGLE HANDEDLY RUINED MY GRADE. A in 1 course and 2 b+ and in heed i almost got a failing grade DO NOT TAKE
Dave Kato is an ok proff. You have to go to class because he does not upload his powerpoint but instead converts them to a word document which makes it confusing and inefficient. Don't know why he can't just upload the powerpoint so it actually makes sense but i guess he forces you to read the textbook but does not teach in order making it confusi.
Lots of papers but he was an easy marker when it came to those. The tests were harder than I expected but Dave cares a lot about his work and hr cares about his students too.
Dave's lectures are story-filled and relatable which makes it easy to follow along. I never opened my textbook, even before the final. Everything he quizzes you on is from class lectures. He appreciates student's involvement and contribution during class. Very specific about APA format but overall great guy and very good teacher.
Very nice teacher, you can ask lots of questions and he will answer them no problem. However on the course outline it will say 2 assignments but will be actually 4. VERY tough marker and if you make a mistake your grade will suffer big time.
Dave is incredibly knowledge. He can answer almost any question. His lectures had good stories and clear outcomes. Offers good criticism. His exams/assignments were far beyond a second year course for difficulty. I had a lab final, lab exam, research paper, and final exam due all the same week. He was happy no one ever got an A.
Dave is a very knowledgable prof, with very strong opinions that he will voice and make people cringe. However, his teaching ability is strong and learning from him is an easy thing to do as he gives plenty examples and is clear. This is an extremely material heavy course, but if you put in the work - it will pay off.
Dave is such a great prof! If you show up to class you'll do great, he is very accessible outside of class he is willing to work with you and he'll give you the help you need. Although for a 100 level class he gives out a lot of assignments, I had 3 assignment (10% each), group project (15%). VERY strict when it comes to APA format.
Honestly this class was the easiest course I have taken, I have taken math courses in elementary that took more brain power formulate a A+. If I was a plank of wood (aspen) i could easily without a doubt get a A+. Make sure you show up to your final but attendance on mid terms isnt required as the final is so easy, your grade should still be 4.0.
Never rated a prof before, but gotta do it for Dr. Dave. Biggest beauty I know. Great prof and even greater dude all around. Haters might rate him low if they failed the class- you gotta work for it but he gives you everything you need to succeed. Dude's an expert in his field and listens and cares about his students a ton and it shows.
Alright. Some people think Dave is good prof others say he is awful. I think he is awful prof, although he is a very caring and respectable person. Exams are super hard. His notes were confusing. Converts slides to a word document which pretty much messed it up and you were stuck in class fixing it. Makes you learn an entire unit by yourself 1/2
I found that Dave was a very good prof. His test were what he taught and what we went over there were very few of any tricks on his test. It is very straight forward, but studying is a must. He is very supportive and kind, and overall just a great person and a prof
Dave is a mess of a professor. He does not understand how to teach in an online environment and takes forever to respond to emails. I was told to take HEED110 as an elective because it's supposed to be a fun class to take with a relatively light workload. Instead what I have experienced with Dave is the opposite.
Knowledgable in his field, but prides himself on giving students low grades and does not want to acknowledge that this is a 100 level course. If you have unresponsive members in your group project, he will say that it is your fault for not knowing how to work with others. The class midterm average was in the 60s. Has a very old-school approach.
If you care about your mental health or earning a grade equivalent to your work, choose anything else. I am a hard-working student and I do not mind lots of work. During the first exam, I scored the highest in the class and got a 75. Let that sink in. I chose to ignore the reviews, don't make my same mistake.
He's ok but very old school. The exam was a joke. He doesn't give enough time and being online it's different than being in class. Even if the entire class has concerns about the amount of time he doesn't care. For a prof that teaches about stress management, he doesn't care about students mental health
just don't. avoid him he is so arrogant and just so bad at giving information. awful prof does not give fair marks. if you have a good gpa just avoid him. there aren't words to describe such a bad prof. He is awful at teaching. I don't even think he has a teacher degree
AVOID at all costs. Instructions are unclear in all of his assignments and you don't know exactly what is expected of you so you kind of just freestyle and hope for the best as he doesn't clarify much either. Tests are hard, lecture-based. Arrogant attitude as well, if you don't understand something, your on your own.
Dr. Dave was awesome in class and online, he does warn you how hard the course can be. He made the material really easy to understand and follow along with online learning. He is really caring and is willing to make sure you understand the concept. You need to be in class otherwise you will miss tons of key notes. just try and you'll be fine.
dave is a great professor and makes sure everyone understands things throughly, you will need to use the textbook in the class to help you study and he does tell you important info you need for the tests. His class is difficult but he makes it enjoyable. He cares about his students and you can tell he enjoys teaching peds100
Prof enjoys making an easy class as hard as possible. Wont record lectures and asks students to be in class when Macewan is only online. Its called personal health because the prof doesn't want you to have any. Stressful class with a terrible prof. do not take.
On the surface he says he is tough marker but he is relatively easy about marking just don't get on his bad side. Overall very fair
Dave Kato is easily the worst professor I have ever had in my entire life. He is a very biased marker, has little care for students and enjoys making things difficult. Does not help when you ask question or clarification during tests and honestly wants you to fail.
The dide is either awesome one second or sorta mean the next. Idk what his deal it but always show up to class, keep your heas down, and you should be alright
Dr. Kato is awesome! He is passionate about his research and very knowledgeable. He is "old-school" so going to lectures/lab is a must; they're interesting and engaging. Brings his dog Poppy to class. Enjoyed taking anatomy from him last year and loved the content of this course. By showing him you care he will support you through your education.
Dr. Dave Kato is one of the most inconsiderate professors and educational instructors I have ever come across. I 100% would recommend NOT taking this class. He claims to give constructive criticism except he's actually just blunt af. Says he has office hours to “discuss” inquiries, yet doesn't actually care about said inquiries. Poppy CARRIED him.
His feedback is less about improvement and more about putting people down. His narcissism is impossible to ignore, and it's clear he thinks he's above everyone else. It's an incredibly unprofessional and frustrating experience overall.
Would not recommend this professor. He claims to offer "constructive criticism," but it's clear he has no idea how to do that without being condescending and downright rude. Continued in the next review below...
During my time with Professor Kato I have learned that 1.he doesn't respond well to you questioning him 2.that you will not get a timely or in-depth response and 3.his tests are heavily bloated with out of date shorthand and side comments from lecture. overall it feels as though he is more concerned with showing off then he is teaching.
extremely content heavy. exams are much too long 150q+. crappy notes and won't give us slides. too old school the man needs to retire.
Someone check this guy for narcissism disorder.. wait no its obvious.. or wait? Is it just LITTLE man syndrome..;) This goblin of a character is one of the most insensitive individual you will encounter in life; proceed with caution for PE students. If you're not in PE/kin, avoid his classes.
Who hired this creep of an instructor..also clearly well aware of his tenure and is exploiting that to his advantage.
he doesn't teach effectively.
Expects a 300 level performance on a 100 level class. Also horrendous personality
Retire already boomer
He started the semester by telling us his class is hard and that some wouldn't get through the term. This is not my first semester in kin, I know my stuff. Yet he made it extremely difficult by being unclear with exams, using TINY labels on models, and giving you 70 seconds to label 4-5 structures on the lab final. I've never had so little time.
Be ready for an 160+ question cumulative final exam where he gives you no guidance on what to do. He's only here to get a bag and does not care about the development or learning of his students.
He is way complicated. test are extremely hard. He's decent while teaching in lectures, but his exams are terrible and extremely difficult, especially with such little resources he gives you. avoid this dude please trust me
“Dr.” Dave doesn't actually even have a PhD. He just has his MA. So it's ironic how pretentious he is and insists on being referred to as someone who has their doctorate.
No PhD = you can't call yourself a Dr. If you're not in PE don't take anatomy with Dave.
Dr Dave is a beauty. I have taken 3 classes with Dave and will use content from all in my future profession. Due to the nature of Daves courses, success is challenging – however he keeps his grading very fair and only tests lecture material. Commit to learning instead of studying for test results and Dr Daves classes will be extremely useful.
me and my classmates are always confused on what we need to take notes on..he also likes picking on students !
he is quite literally the worst professor I have ever had in my life. He lectures about things that are not even on the test and even when you ask for clarification, he gives you an answer that is him just being stuck up and acting like a child. He refers to himself as a doctor but literally does not have his PHD? DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. BAD PROF
I put hilarious the only tag because its comical how awful of a prof he is. He gets satisfaction from failing students in the class. If I did not previous anatomy class, I would have been so lost and genuinely feel as if he is robbing students of tuition money. He needs to retire. it's also creepy he takes photos of us at the beginning of the year.
Dr. Dave Kato (whom doesn't have a PHD) likes to degrade students by making them feel uneducated when they can't answer a question when he randomly calls them out in class. he often likes to show off his knowledge on random facts rather than teaching us the actual curriculum. Poppy is the only reason why I haven't dropped this class yet.
Overall this class is hard and there is plenty information and it doesn't stop coming at you, so make sure you are on track and set up schedules. His lectures are fast and the exams are long I think he tries to scare students so they understand how much effort is required but his exams are fair you just have to make sure you do a TON of prep work.
It seems like most people are torn on Kato, but as a prof he just did resonate well with me. He seems more focused on telling us how miserable Uni will be rather then motivating his students to achieve well. His slides convert into word documents which are harder to understand and you have to do a lot of study on your own. Personality wise…depends
I will never recommend him, he gets joy out of telling how hard university will be and how finals week will be "hell". He calls on students and humiliates students during lecture. Overall his teaching style isn't bad but goes very fast and throws a lot of information. He gets a kick out of how long and hard his exams are going to but overall fair.
The labs for this class are horrible, there is a body composition lab where as a girl I felt very uncomfortable having him measure me. He is very sexist and portrays girls as weaker, less talented, and many more. His lectures were insanely boring and long and went on many random stories with no relevance. Hope to never have him again, 0/10
Ok prank's over, you can stop teaching now bruh💀
I would recommend avoiding this class at all costs.
I think as a professor, he does a good job at explaining things and will clear up or go over anything again. He definitely likes to pick on people, mostly the same few and can definitely be condescending but overall is friendly. As long as you pay attention the class is not bad. Definitely likes to talk about how hard the class is.
Pervy creep.
His lectures are long and he often goes off on a tangent. His exams are fair game yet brutal. Especially the lab exam, start preparing in September because it's unreasonably difficult. If you aren't in BPE Transfer program I'd recommend looking into other anatomy classes.
Circa Fall 2023 ~ Dave Kato says to a student, and I quote: “whoever invented vball shorts deserves a Nobel Peace Prize” after a lab in the gym in which he was “spotting” girls during forearm curls…
