He is a great professional teacher but is harsh on students.
It's a hard class, but dave is a great teacher. This is college - you have to put in the work to get the good grades. Dave may be tough, but you'll learn a lot. I found his grading system to be fair.
Ohlens class was hard but I did learn a lot. The tests were hard but not too bad if you use the study guide. However, he had absolutely no personality and I don't think he smiled once the whole semester.
dave was the hardest dang math teacher I have ever had. His tests and Homework were extremely hard. He knows his stuff, but could be better with more personality.
He taught you a lot and made sure everyone knew how to get the most out of their calculator. This subject is hard. Homework and lectures were easy, but the tests were difficult. The grading was very fair.
loved him. thorough, clear, willing to help. i was sad to find out that he wasn't teaching the next sequences of math(calc A,B). really enjoys teaching. good sense of humor.
Nice guy but he just has it out for his students. Tests were extremely difficult & some homeworks were unreasonably long. Takes long way around to explain concepts. Half of his class this semester has already failed or dropped. Many students are retaking the class because they had him last semester.
Dave is a great teacher, he will spend as much time as needed to explain the subject. He gives lots of homework, but it is what you need so that you will understand the work. He comes off as if he is always grumpy, but he is a nice guy once you get to know him.
This is a very hard class, but Dave explains it very well. You need to do the homework and not miss any of the classes. If you ask, he will tell you what will be on the test and will tell you what homework questions to go over for the test. He is always available for office hours and very helpfull.
A bit Boring
Ohlsen is one hard teacher but he knows his stuff. If you want a challenge take him. I would recomend him for math majors only. I had to drop math 27 and I will take it again next semestor.
Ohlsen is a hard teacher, but explains things thoroughly. His exam reviews help a lot. The exams are very difficult, but he'll tell you what's on it.
Dave Ohlsen is awesome! If you take him, you will be more prepared than anybody in your next class. He is very hard, but makes up for it with great teaching.
I took this class three semesters before i took calculus and was still very prepared. doesn't require that you turn in hwk, so do what you need to. he was a cool and considerate guy that was very clear and very thourough.
Very good teacher, but very hard. Be prepared to work and go to the tutoring center. He honestly isn't great if you go to office hours--he just makes you confused. His expectations are high, but somehow he makes you want to do it. I would definitely take him again.
Dave is an awesome guy, if you have the skills to pay the bills, an A is possible, but if you plan on slacking off I don't recommend him at all. His tests are very very hard, and he is pretty stingy on the homework points aswell-if you're lazy you pay the price-Dave has a very good way of filtering out the weaker students-beware but I reccomend hi
Ohlsen is the best math teacher that I have ever had. He explains everything very well and writes everything that he says on the board for the visual and audio learners. He is the hardest teacher that I have ever had, but I learned the material very well, and he helped me whenever I asked. Beware: His tests are VERY hard. He tricks the problems
He assumes that you know as much as he does when he teaches, struggled to the point of quitting math for 2 semesters because of him. But as any class goes, no matter how bad the teaching is, if you work hard, you can get a B or A.
Dave is a straight forward teacher great guy. He is solid and quick on his excution of formulas the best students in his class are usually kept with homework so if you want an A or B just do the assignments. In general challenging but cool class.
hard to listen to. so boring and really picky about the work

I didn't like his style at all... Generally he explained about half of the material before an assignment was due, so homework was always more difficult that it needed to be. Also he has a lot of asinine rules and procedures about everything, including showing your work in HIS specific way or getting no credit, regardless of a correct answer.
He's tough. He says he dosen't require to turn in all homeworks, but will selectively collect them. Only two weeks left and he's picked up all but two assignments. He's very clear on what he wants, during class he will stop and explain if you just ask. Available during office hours to help and explain homework problems.
Sure he's tough and his HW is usually long, but it's because of the course material not him. He goes into detail with the key stuff in class & wants you to come to his office to ask lengthy questions. There's a lot to cover so if a class asks too many ?'s threre will be a delay of learned stuff with Hw assignments. I say he's cool N knows his stuff
objectivley good. very hard. 155 is easy, in the summer if you are payiing attention. 27 hard period, ohlsen is good at making sure you understand the material. does not trick students, gives exam breakdown with exactly what is going to be on the test, some questions are directly lifted from the hw. still i would take bach if i could do again.
The teacher is good, but its too extrict.
Most anal instructor ever. More concerned about how the homework should be formatted than that the students are learning the subject. I learned more about trig in Math 1A than in Ohlsen's trig class
i would not take ohlsen over again if i had the chance, in my class, only two or three people got a B or A. he was very anal about homework and sometimes i felt he didn't want to be there and wasn't alsways clear in explanation. worst teacher ive had so far.
Worst teacher i have ever had. I always look forward to taking math, i loved it, until i had him. He doesnt explain things well, he teaches as if you have already taken the course and you know what hes talking about. When meeting one on one hes not good at answering questions.
I refuse to ever take one of his classes again. Like the others said, he's extremely anal. He constantly changed up his grading methods, so you never knew what to expect. I spent hours on one assignment, and the next day he decided to grade the ONLY problem on it that I had missed. I failed the entire assignment because of it.
He is a good teacher overall...very clear. You don't turn in any hw. Grade is based only on tests, but you get to drop one. The tests are really hard. There are only four A's and mostly D's. If you are disciplined I would recommend him.
The WORST teacher I ever had for math. Totally rigid, makes it seem like he wants everyone to fail. GOODLUCK! Its grueling.
i think mr. ohlsen although tough is a good teacher and just wants his students to succeed. If you take the time to learn information he will take the time to help you understand.
I found Ohlsen be a difficult instructor; he challenges students, which is what I enjoyed about him. He was very thorough in lecture and crystal clear throughout the course of the semester on his grading policy and what he expects from his students. He worked extra hard by organizing his lectures so that they were easy to follow. I would recommend!
Solid teacher, but he moves really fast. Show up on time and don't miss any class or you will fail. Always willing to help if you go see him in his office though, so no excuses.

Okay, great teacher, hard class. Mr. Ohlsen will help you no matter what, he's very patient, even if it seems like he isn't. He's definitely intimidating at first, but he's a good guy. He goes pretty fast, and covers a lot of material, but is always ready to help those who ask. Take this class (and teacher) only if you have to.
Ohlsen is good but really tough. DO NOT miss classes, you will NOT pass if you do. He seems mean, but id you stick it out he gets friendlier. Exams are really hard, no notes allowed. My best advice, go in and see him often for help, study hm wrk questions and class examples for tests, often puts hm wrk questions on exams. be ready to work hard
He is tough! I did all of the homework, missed minimal classes, took great notes, asked questions, came in for help, and studied for every test and got a D!!! He grades completely unfair I got the right answers on the test but would get C's because he didn't like the way I did my work or didn't show enough of it... Don't take him!!!
Very tough teacher! very anal on his grading and how u do ur work. Likes to explain "y the formula works" and it wastes a lot of time and is pointless. He is very promt...he never missed a class and was never late. Seems kinda mean at first but as the semester goes on he lightens up. HW is LONG and the final was VERY HARD. Recommend?..not relly..
Dave is a great teacher. He is strict about attendance, promptness, and attention during lectures, but he is highly organized and clear. He is always available to help students. A fair grader.
Great teacher. One of the most clearest teachers that I have ever had. Gives a lot of homework though. This was a very easy class but takes a lot of your time. what I did was do some of the problems to get the idea and got very low homework grades but I got A's on all of his tests and over 100% on one and his final and got 100% in the course.
I WISH I COULD SWEAR ON THIS THING BECAUSE JUST SAYING DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS DOESN'T SEEM SUFFICIENT.
His lectures were pretty clear..but they were also very boring. Sumtimes it was hard to stay awake. He's a nice guy unless he thinks ur not paying attention in class..then he will go off on u. Overall good teacher, with medium difficulty
Dave's pretty strict at the start of the semester, but relaxes a bit as the semester goes on. He is extremely helpful both in class and at his office hours. When lecturing he likes to point out where students tend to make mistakes. His only downsides: his lectures tend to be a little boring, and his tests can be hard for those not good at math.
He spells out the rules VERY CLEARLY on day one. He hands out test topic sheets before each test. PRACTICE THOSE PROBLEMS! They will be on the test. It's a difficult class but not impossible. Review previous assignments throughout the semester or the final will destroy you. I thought he was excellent and look forward to Math 1A with him.
Dave is a really good teacher, you just need to work hard and do your homework and pay attention in class, if you do the tests will be really easy, I always had problems at algebra but thanks to Dave now i can understand better because he is very helpful and clear, he is a really cool teacher, a little strict, but i really recommend you to take mat
You're prolly reading these reviews wondering which teacher will give you an easy A. You're only cheating yourself! After taking Ohlsen's class, I have much respect to his teaching abilities. Yes, he is hard, and yes he gives out a lot of homework, but his lectures are top class and to the point.
He seems nice at first, but he is bitter, and very picky on the homework. He does not care if you succeed. His tests are extremely hard, and he doesnt like to help you in his office hours.
Dave is a demanding teacher. You'll learn a lot in his classes. His lectures are pretty dry and boring especially early in the morning. He comes off a little stand offish at first but will warm up. He's very helpful in office hours. His tests are really hard, and there's a ton of homework in the class, but that's to be expected in a math class.
Extremely hard class for those not so interested in math. He is a textbook teacher and is in love with proofs. Not recommended if you don't get proofs or expect examples outside of the textbook.
Grades final on a very helpful curve, and counts it for 2 tests, replacing lowest score. Very picky about homework formatting, so make sure you follow his guidelines. Do all the homework on time and always take notes in class, it will help you tremendously. I feel like a stronger math student after taking his class.
Dave is a great guy that knows what he is talking about, his examples are clear and pretty easy to follow however, he is extremely strict when it comes to the large amounts of homework. if u have a missing assignment at the end he'll cut your grade in half on them. hard tests! be prepared. but he does grade finals on a curve which helps
Had Dave for 27, 1A, and 1B. I feel like I could give Sir Isaac Newton a run for his money. He is one of the most demanding teachers I have ever had but I have learned math very well. He loves math and loves students who are interested in math. Study the practice test problems over and over and DO THE HW!
I swear, every thing this guy said was like Greek to me. Half of our class was taught by Clark, the other half by Ohlsen. With the Clark half I had an A, then Ohlsen came by and I dropped to a C. I think he would be very beneficial if you have an aptitude for math and want to major in math or engineering. For others, not so much.
Very demanding teacher, but you learn alot. Show up for class, take good notes. Take the time to do assignments, do practice problems for the test. May seem like strict at first, but thats just who he is. DO NOT pull out cell phone during class!
He gives work, but is very good at his stuff and passes it on very formally and it comes across well. I would take more classes from this instructor.
He's a good teacher, but very difficult. I got my first B at the JC in his class. I think he is pretty clear, and explains things well, but he'll really challenge you and hold you accountable for things you should have learned in algebra/trig... On tests he doesn't give you the easy questions, and will deduct points if your notation isn't perfect.
great professor, very challenging, more like a boss than a teacher, over half my class dropped out, but if you can stick with it you will be well prepared for your next class
Dave is a good teacher, he's genuinely interested in what he teaches and is always willing to thoroughly answer questions both during and after class. He covers a lot of material and assigns more homework than I was willing to do, but tests are fairly easy and straight-forward. I recommend him if you are interested in the subject.
really bad
The tests encompass all of the homework topics. But most of the questions are very abstract versions of what the homework is on. To much time absorbed into the homework for it only counting for 15% of the total grade. Homework grading is extremely anal. Missing three questions on the homework will result in a 5/10 points. Homework a week:16hrs min.
there is a very obvious reason as to why 50% drop out after the first test. That reason pertains as to why 80% fail on every test.
Genuine interest, a good teacher does not make. Fundamentally clinging to abstruse cases when your students don't even grasp what it is you're talking about is a recipe for failure (yours and your students, and yes they are related, even if you don't hold yourself to it). Try to listen more and talk less in and out of class to understand your targe
Please Dave, your "holding someone accountable for something they should have learned" is nothing more than your obstinant refusal to recognize 1. that you exist in a teaching community and 2. what your students need and to teach it to them interactively. Going back to your office and rambling on one-sidedly is just more of the same.
The worst possible math teacher one could have! Assigns over 16 hrs a week of homework, which is only 10% of your grade! Speaks abstrusely in class...and there are are more flaws to this teacher! This teacher was the worst stroke of luck that happened in my math education!!!
He is tough. If your shaky with your trig. identities I strongly advise u to become a profesional at it. he uses it a lot
a great teacher if you want to pay attention and be a good student, the people who say otherwise are more than likely bitter as he is a strict guy that keeps you honest. if you dont do the hw, you wont pass the tests plain and simple. the reason hw is worth 10% is because it is not the point of the class, this is college, exams are how you get an A
This guy likes math. But man is he a poor teacher. Don't get me wrong, he'll help you learn if you ask him, but, he's pycho on his homework, and teaches in a confusing way. I was very interested in math, but, having failed, I had to teach myself. Now I have placed into Calculus, and I really love math, but no thanks to this guy. I'm too lazy. Sorry
If you don't get math to begin with then don't take his classes!!
Very helpful and approachable. Strict, but fair. The class moves fast, but he's always willing to help you to not fall behind. However, if you slack off, he WILL take evil pleasure in marking that you are doing so. It's rather fun to see, actually, provided you're actually doing the work, yourself!
I dont think I worked harder than any other Math class. He gives lots of homework and make sure you understand them. His notes are good so dont miss class! His test are very hard. Over half the class failed so just make sure you that you make an effort to try to learn. I'm not very good in Math but I had a study group that help's. Stay focus!
Do not take this teacher if you have a life. NO NOTES ON TESTS! He is very anal about everything, even down to the paper you use. Very willing to help outside of class but not during. Our class would have questions about the homework and he would do a few them tell us to figure it out ourselves. Be prepared for 5-6 hours of homework a night.
Dave is nice out of class as previously noted, but in class is a whole different story. Very tough teacher, and expects you to know as much math as he does. Over thirty people when class began, yet only thirteen people lasted until the final. He stresses Logarithims WAY too much. Save yourself the headache and take somebody else.
His lectures may be confusing, but he is very helpful during his office hours. When I started going to his office hours my grade went from a D to a B.
Professor Ohlsen was a really good teacher. Math is definitely not an easy subject, but he explains everything very well and he's always willing to help his students. The only thing I didn't like was the way he grades. 60% of your grade is based on test scores and 30% on the final. Just ask lots of questions and study hard and you'll do alright.
I had trouble following the in-class lessons. He was willing to provide me with extra help in his office and extra textbooks to borrow when I was falling behind. He convinced me to stick with it and I passed Trig! He spends lots of time grading the homework so you have good feedback, and he gives you the benefit of the doubt when grading exams.
AWFUL. I have always been good at math, and I easily understand the material. He tests on material much harder than he teaches and grades extremely rough. I would not and will not ever recommend as a teacher.
Strict oh homework/tests, but it's for your own good. He is very clear during lectures and checks homework carefully, in order to help you out. He may seem extremely dry, but he is definitely going to teach you mathematics and how to succeed in the future.
Very excellent teacher!
Ohlsen is organized and to the point. Do the assigned reading;his lectures will "click" if you read beforehand. He does a lot of examples in class that are similar to the homework questions. Also, if you listen, he TELLS you which problems are likely to show on the tests. He completely prepares you for his tests-gives study guides as well.
I did not like Ohslen's teaching at all. He assigns a ton of homework yet his tests are nothing like the homework problems, they are way harder! And on 3 of the exams over 60% of the class failed yet he refuses to curve your grades at all. I would not recommend taking him.
Very hard grader, very particular in his own ways of doing. If you do not follow his way you will not learn. Class is fast pace and you must show up to understand the material. He assigns ALOT of homework for a 4 day a week class. His exam breakdowns are not consitant with exams, therefore study homework and notes. Good luck.
Dave is a nice guy who wants to help people succeed. Unfortunately, his homework load is massive. Often times the testing questions are very different from those assigned in the homework. With two hours of homework and another hour of reading every night you would expect more than 30% of the class to pass his exams, but no...
Prof. Ohlsen was really hard. is a really nice guy who will answer any question you have and will be really patient. However he loves trig. identities, so know them well before taking his class. Also his tests are really tough! I always studied a lot, but he likes to use hard questions. Overall, nice guy, tough grader!!
I absolutely loved math yet when I took his class I had almost no passion left for it at all. He is a ridiculously difficult teacher and is rude and unhelpful when you ask him for help. 50% of the class is failing and he thinks there's something wrong with us. Take ANYONE else.
Difficult. No notes allowed on tests at all, because he wants students to understand the material and not just write it all down and regurgitate it. I don't use notes on tests anyway, so I liked this. Math is supposed to be difficult. If his class was easy I would be disappointed. Don't take him if you want easiness. Take him if you want to learn.
I am a very dedicated student but I had to drop his class because I couldn't follow his lectures at all and his tests seemed largely unrelated to the homework and lectures. Taking it the next semester with Gale Bach made all the difference and I loved the class.
Dave is not for everyone. He is great during office hours, and can answer any question you have. However, his tests are overly difficult and he expects almost too much of his students. Everything hurts.
I love Dave, he really loves math. You come away from his class with a full understanding of the material. Be ready to learn! His test are hard if you don't study. Be prepared to spend time making sure you understand every concept. He is willing to further explain anything at office hours.
This class was hard, and the final, in my opinion, was almost impossibly so; no notes were allowed and there were tons of formulas to remember. Ohlsen is helpful and good at explaining the topics, though. Furthermore, though this class is hard, it did give a great base for calculus.
Dave really is a good teacher. He goes over material thoroughly, and is perfectly willing to spend office hours helping his students. However, his tests are outrageous, the final in particular was a freaking joke. Tons of formulas, and we're supposed to remember every one with no notes, and then complete problems way harder than the book? No thanks
He's a great teacher with his lectures and makes you feel like you understand. But when you take what you learned from class and transfer the knowledge to the hw. It doesn't connect. The textbook is very helpful but it doesn't always solve the hard questions on the hw. His tests are very difficult. He hands out the exam breakdown and isn't helpful
Great teacher. Only take him if you are preparing to take Calculus though because it's a hit to your GPA, but worth it in the long run. He's always willing to help, and doesn't crap from unruly students. Leave your phone at the door.
Watch amazingly as half the class fails. I've read the chapter before class, but I can barely understand what he's saying (not that he speaks clearly in the first place). He'll work homework problems during class, but often goofs on the board; this makes a difficult subject unnecessarily confusing. Run. Just run.
Everything about the class is extremely challenging. I'm dedicated, but his teaching methods dont work. Im to the point of forgetting his lectures and learning from the book. His grading is ridiculous. On average, half the class fails his exams. During lectures instead of teaching, its more like watching how fast he can do the math. DO NOT TAKE HIM
This class is challenging, but he's very helpful and gives you breakdowns for the test. He's always available during his office hour and a couple days before the tests he extends his office hour.
VERY tough class. Hardest class i have taken yet and Ohlsen did not help with that. His hw assignments are long and do not really prepare you for how ridiculously hard his tests are. His lectures make you feel like you understand but really don't relative to the toughness of the homework and tests. I do not recommend whatsoever.
Ohlsen needs to refine his teaching methods. I'm not super smart nor dumb he just made MATH 27 way harder than it should have been. Demonstrates examples way too fast, not very clear on certain examples, overall not much of an inspiration to keep learn math. 4 Exams, weekly quizzes(Picks 5 problems off HW),Final is hard(he says it himself).
Good guy, but I had a hard time following him the entire semester. Lectures seem to drag on because of his monotone voice. Does not seem to want to be there, which makes it hard as a student.
Ohlsen's calculus classes are for hardcore students. To succeed in his class is to be the last man standing. Ohlsen lays out everything needed to succeed. His lectures are rigid but clear, his homework is a slugfest, and he tells his students exactly how to pass his class. Pay attention, work hard, and be rewarded.
I took AP calc and got a B but somehow Ohlsen makes calculus confusing. He won't let students do calculus in any other way than his own and is meticulous about showing work. Even when you copy down exactly what he wrote on the board for a solution to a problem he will still give you no credit for the problem because "not enough work is shown".
Very disappointed with this class . Ohlsen has a tendency to be unwilling to try to understand anything that isn't immediately clear. He also moves aggravatingly quickly through lectures and his handwriting is nearly illegible. Combined with continually blocking the board, I got so frustrated I dropped the class.
Gives long-winded lectures and is hard to follow. He will give you zero points if you do not show the appropriate amount of work, although you may mimic how he works out a problem that may or may not be sufficient. Never dropped a course before but this class was intolerable by week 2 more than 50% of the class dropped.
He can be unclear in his lectures. Sometimes he makes the problem seem more difficult than it really is.
Grouchy, crotchety, old-world man. Still uses the whiteboard even though we have new overhead technology, and blocks most of his chicken scratch with his round body. When you're not being put to sleep by his monotone voice, you're constantly trying to catch up on taking notes, because he is almost always in the way. Impatient man, do no recommend.
I'm a math major, and took Math 1A with this instructor. I love mathematics and he made me hate it. He was not helpful, made the examples EXTRA hard on purpose and would make fun of students if they forgot trig; sorry instructor but trig is not everybody's cup of tea! I dropped out of the class. I wouldn't recommend if you're trying to learn.
When signing up for this class I was nervous because of all the horrible feedback I read on this site. However, I can honestly say he is the BEST math teacher I've ever had. Yes, it is hard work but it's calculus so it's going to be challenging. His lectures are clear& he sets the bar high because he actually wants you to do well! Take his class!
Best instructor Ive had!Ratings reflect high standards. Call me old school, but put the time in, come to class, pay attention, take notes and go to office hours (before the last exam). Very helpful, but has a dry sense of humor. Dont be offended when he teases you for forgetting your trig. We all do. My complaint is that he's not teaching 1C!
Ohlsen was a really good teacher, but he's not easy at ALL. He's good at teaching and likes what he does; however, you can't just do the homework to pass the class. You have to really like math or have a strong desire to learn if you want to do well. Don't let that scare you though. Take him if you want to learn and need a challenge.
Ohlsen is one of the worst professors on campus. He is a mean old man who just wants to see how fast he can write the steps on the board. I am a straight A student and got D's on both of his tests. My suggestion is to buy the book, study diligently on your own then take a placement test to pass this class. Your GPA will suffer if you take him
Doesn't care about you, if you're failing or not. Try to go in his office hours and did not help at all. Grades extremely tough. His instructions aren't the best, but you just have to basically teach yourself with the instructions he gives you. Homework and Notes don't help that much with test. Test are the scariest thing in his class, be careful.
Take the class seriously and get some tutor help. Utilize office hours and you should have no problem getting a B.
He is one of those teachers that has huge favorites. If you are on his good side, you will do better than could think possible. My friend (who is smarter than me) ended up with a c in the class while I (one of his chosen) got an A. He his practice test are nothing like the actual exams. RUN just RUN!!!!!
Honestly he has one of the worst dispositions ever. If you don't trust these reviews, stand outside of one of his classed and listen. You can also try to ask one of the students on their way out. I will never step foot in his class again.
Mr. Ohlsen is the worst instructor I've ever had. I am a math major an I received a D as my final grade. He is very moody and irritable. We started with 40 and at the last exam we had 15. If you don't want your GPA to plummet, take from anyone else!! Makes way too many mistakes on examples - by the end you are really confused!!! :(
Doesn't seem to care about students or the class. Is a really rough grader and makes a lot of mistakes while giving lectures.
Worst class I have ever taken. Made me question my intelligence. I'm a straight A student and I got Ds and Fs on all the tests I took. There were over 40 students and now there are less than 15. He grades hard, doesn't help if asking questions, and his tests are ridiculous. 8-10 questions on a test and they he chooses the hardest problems.
One of the best teachers in the math department. Be prepared to work your butt off. If you do, you can learn more than you ever thought. Lenient grader, and he wants his grading to be as fair as possible, even to the extent of taking the time out of his own weekend to regrade everyone's test, extremely hard, holds students to the highest standards
He wants to see how fast he can get the world record for most math on a whiteboard in an hour during lecture. His EXAMS ARE SUPER TOUGH! He is pretty grumpy, but he is EINSTEIN'S GRANDSON. Got a B, which threw my 4.0 GPA to a 3.8. Tough, Tough, and unfortunately does not explain everything well. He makes tons of mistakes, but he tries to care.
Good enough teacher but very monotone and boring. Stands in front of the board so that you cant see what hes writing.
Not a great math professor. He has a distinctive disconnect with technology and his students, unlike many of the other professors. Doesn't set up canvas site, so you need to visit him in his office for questions. The only way you'll do well in his class, is if you naturally understand math. If you struggle you will NEED a tutor.
Math is tough. If you have the time to invest 20+ hours outside of class into studying just this course, youll manage. He is always available during his office hours, and I recommend popping in with presise questions. Be warned, the final is BRUTAL. He does stand in front of the white board, so if its and issue just speak up.
Dave is a very difficult teacher to learn from, he stands in front of the whiteboard while writing and often makes mistakes while lecturing that the class was constantly catching. studying from the book was necessary because just going off what he taught us often did not work for me. He knows math well but does not know how to teach it well.
Dave is traditional. He tells his students exactly what he expects of them, and tells them exactly how to acheive it. He gives an "exam breakdown" before every test that covers the exact types of problems to expect. In order to pass his exams, I studied those guides thoroughly. I'm grateful for the work ethic he helped me develop in his classes!
Ohlsen is the best! Yes, he is hard but the first two exams have lots of extra credit so if you study the exam breakdown problems and do the HW over before test you will do well. I did so well on the second test that I have an A+. You must show up to class more than 90% of the class days, he dropped someone from the class for not showing up enough.
Dave Ohlsen is a hidden gem. I'm certain those that rate him low is because they were too lazy to put in the work required by Prof Ohlsen. If you want to LEARN math, you take Prof Ohlsen. If you want to "get a grade," look elsewhere. And on that note, his grading policy is actually the most "bolstered" I've seen.
Ohlsen is a professor who has a disconnect with techonology. He does not use Canvas OR email. In order to get help, you will have to visit him in office hours or *call him.* Ridiculous amount of homework coupled with overly difficult tests as well as monotone lecturing made class with him a nightmare.
Grades subjectively instead of investing time to care for a student. Judges people based off looks and whether they speak or not. It was hard for me because I am very quiet but know the subjects well. So whenever I would ask a question he would explain in a tone of hatred.
OMG! What a nightmare this was as if math isn't already tough enough! For some reason, he only selects the toughest problems on tests, assigns way too much homework, and sets students up for failure from day one. None of the students in the class were experts, mind you. I just got my B.A. not too long ago, so I never have to deal with this again.
