I am taking speach class with him, and let me say it is not really a speach class. It is more of a general communications class. If you do your reading, you should do well. Dont give up on this class, took me a while to get a feel for it.
If you want a good speech teacher, take his class. He makes is a fun laid back class. I knew I was going to hate speech but it is the one class i really like, thanks to him
This man is super organized, but he is one of the greatest teachers at RVC. Very helpful, he wants you to do good. I have not missed a single class, it is that fun.
I was terrified first day but, because Dave really is a good teacher, I got through it and feel comfortable speaking to groups now. His is fair and trys new ways to teach. He is interested in teaching and his students. Take his class.

Grading scale is absolutely horrible. Read the book! Doesn't cover quiz material.
He's pretty leaniant and easy to talk to.
He is a good teacher, except his grading format is horrendous. All assignments are graded M (mastery-100%), P (progressing-50%), or I (incomplete-0%). There are a total of 20 points all semester. That means if you "progress" on every assignment you will fail with 10/20 points! Risky to take!

Class is great to take if you don't like making speeches and have to take the class for your degree. Only about 3 speeches during the semester.
What a terrible teacher. Sorry everyone, take Baccino-Theisen for speech. This man grades like a 2 yr.old. Ok children, your a master, your in progress. You progress and do well the entire semester, you fail. Lets say you have 15/20 points, you cant do better. You can only lower your grade. HORRIBLE.
The best teacher I have ever had. Makes learning easy by relating material to the real world. Helpful whenever need and very flexible. Take him if you have the chance!
Grading system has changed and isn't that hard. Just goes to show how flexible he is. He is always willing to help and don't be afraid to tell him if you don't like the way he does something. He really wants people to learn the subject. I'm taking every class I can with him.
Worst class I ever took.
Good teacher. He's interested in teaching, and students learning. Also found him to be very kind.
He is an awesome teacher, very understanding of me being in a wheelchair
Wow! he stares a lot if you pay attention!! Ahhh...eye contact!!! I don't like his unit grading system..it's really weird, but you can never really fail!
He's a really good guy. He is very helpful and patient, but he talks about how he used to be a party animal in college, once you see him.... You will not be able to tell that he used to be this "Brandy Night, take tests hungover and never go to class guy"
he is really helpful if you show an interest, or at least a commitment to the class. he is also really understanding and open to ones personal thoughts
I really like his teaching style. He is very open and wants to see you succeed. His teaching style is different then others that I have encountered, he tries to make things interesting. If you at least try to show an interest in this class, you will do well.
Very nice, understanding, and above all reasonable teacher. Talkative, and will remember you if you see him and talk to you.
He's a great teacher. He really seems to want you to do well. He remembers everyones name after just the first day. His style is certainly unique.
Good guy, awesome teacher, made class fun!!!!
Good class. Made giving speeches a breeze! Wants to get to know you and you to know him so when you talk to him it's not scary. Yay!!
The best teacher I had at RVC. Fair, personable and really cares about his students. Inspired me to be a teacher and supported me years after I graduated from RVC. Take him, commit to his class and you will be rewarded!
horrible grading scale. everything is out of four, so if your assignment is not perfect, you already have a 75% C!!!! he is very helpful if you have questions, but is only helpful on the first quiz!!! he says that he tells you exactly what is on the quiz, but that is a dirty lie. DON'T TAKE HIM FOR SPEECH!!!!
Dave Ross is one of the most helpful professors I have ever had. I dreaded speech and he made it something that was bearable. If you are willing to put a little bit into your speeches, you will be more than rewarded by his laid back style of teaching.
Great and friendly personality, his teaching style is certainly different, but ok. His tests are a bit wierd sometimes (written vs. Multiple choice) Overall I reccomend him, but his class is somewhat hard.
Mr. Ross is the most helpful and the sweetest man. If you are a serious student you will have no trouble with him. He is an awesome human being and there is no one nicer in the world! He even helps out students, past or present in any way that he can. I think he is an awesome professor!
Dave is a good guy. Although I loved the class, I was often unclear what was expected of me. You don't take notes, he just randomly talks. The tests are all short answers. He likes group work, journals and movies.
not very helpful.
He's a super sweet guy, easy class if you jsut show up and do the work.
Mr. Ross is the best! He would do just about anything for anyone! He is so encouraging and helpful! Too sweet!
He's one the nicest teachers I've met! He loves to get to know the students individually and help them on personal levels, and his classes are fun and easy to understand. DEFINITELY RECOMMEND!!!
Very unclear about his assignments. Boring, Boring, Boring. Do not recommend this class. Either he likes you and you get a good grade or he doesnt and you fail
A Great teacher, I highly reccomend him. He is a great speaker, and also a likeable guy. His methods sometimes seem strange, but they do have a practicable purpose, mostly aimed at easing the feeling of aloofness everyone feels when in a new class. He does expect a lot, and isnt easy, but I found that he requires fewer papers. Highly reccomend him.
Not willing to compromise. Even if you can back an answer up in the book he will not change the grade. He gives life advise for a majority of the class and barely talks about speech. HARD GRADEr! quizes are tough few passed in my class and speech outlines are very difficult. DO NOT ADVISE taking him. people frustrated throughout course in my class
He is a good guy, but would not suggest taking him. Boring and hard class. He gives an outline for quizes and the answers in book are not satisfactory on tests. If you write what the book says, you can still get the answer wrong. Very hard to pass quizes. not an Easy A. could bring GPA down But will pass. BORED OUT OF MY MIND IN CLASS ! ! !
He grades strictly, but you can always come to him and ask questions. He is a very friendly professor, and he does a good job
I took Dr. Ross' Humanties: Leadership Development Studies course and learned so much in the first 3 days. Dr. Ross is extremely helpful and actually re-wrote the syllabus 3 different times to make it exactly what we wanted. His speaking is so motivational and he is so intelligent. EXCELLENT CLASS!!
Mr. Ross is adorable! he has an very friendly personality and always tries to relate as well as he can to his students.he is not terribly strict but you will have to put some effort into passing. i think everything he requires is entirely reasonable though. i can not say enough about what an awesome guy he is though. best speech teacher rvc has!
Attendance is mandatory on speech days. Dave is unclear on what he wants from a speech. one girl leaned up against the wall with her foot up and hid behind her notes the entire 4min! she got B. Some other guys speech was 10 times better and he got a D because it was 30 seconds too short
Love Dr. Ross have taken him every chance i get. Mostly i admire him for the level of teaching he includes in his lectures and classes. He does not really beleive in rules or rule books but does expect you to keep up with the readings.Wish more teachers were like him.Next week he is taking myclas to breakfast before finals instead of giving us one.
He's great!! Speech is a scary class to walk into but Dave does his best to take that off the student's minds. He spent the first couple wks of class doing fun exercises that help students get to know each other & feel comfortable w/their classmates so it makes it easier to make a speech. He looks boring, but he's a good man. Make sure you read!
Mr. Ross really tries to be different than other professors at RVC and approach material differently. The grading scale is ridiculous though with everything out of two points. The book you're expected to read outside of class with no class discussion so if you don't read it, you're screwed.
Dave Ross is the most amazing teacher i have had at the college level. If you have excessive nervousness this is the best speech teacher to take. He teaches class like a student would. He is easy not because he doesnt care but because he teaches you what you need to know and leaves the rest out.
Dave Ross is an awesome teacher. He is very easy to relate to. He is very kind and open. I look forward to taking another one of his classes. He is very respectable.
Rock Valley is blessed to have such an excellent communications professor! Professor Ross really goes out of his way to help his students succeed. I would wholeheartedly recommend him.
wonderful professor very fair, wants all students to succeed
he is such an easy guy to talk to and very open minded.
Honestly this teacher is a nice guy and he can teach, but as for his grading system, I'd have to say he needs a bit more work on it. He goes of an Mastered Progress Incomplete system rather than a A-F system which honestly doesn't really clarify how to improve yourself in his class, and the tests have nothing to do with his lectures!
one of the best teachers ive ever had!!
Dave is without a doubt THE best teacher that i have ever had. His easy manner and profound faith in students ability alleviates any fears or frustrations about speaking publicly. He is very clear about the assignments and is willing to help with just about anything. Great teacher, sad i dont have reason to attend his class again
Great teacher!! I was so nervous about this class and it ended up being my favorite. If you are nervous about public speaking this is the teacher to take. He makes everyone feel relaxed and doesn't expect people to be perfect.
He is very nice and helpful. The class is laid back, its nice. We had class outside for the first monthish.
He's very nice, but a really hard grader. His grading system is confusing. I got my only C in all my 3 semesters of RVC. I tried hard in his class and I don't know why I received such a low grade. But he's very nice!
He is a great teacher and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.
A great teacher and mentor. He does have a slightly confusing grading scale, but really if you show that you thought about the assignment and did it, you'll be fine. Also, be sure to be there! If you aren't it's your loss, but trust me, this is one class you don't want to miss.
Extremely respectable instructor, prefers to be called Dave and has an amazingly easy final every year(only 20 questions). He's fun and serious at the same time and likes to have class outdoors when applicable. You will learn and have fun in his class.Scared about public speaking? He will accomondate you. Great Instructor!
Dave ross is a great professor. I recommend taking him. He has empathy for all of his student and wants everyone to succeed!
Mr.Ross was a great professor. He was calm, organized and always prepared for class. He gives you example speeches for all of your assignments so you know exactly what you need to get the grade. He cuts the people who actually show up some slack so be there.
Follow speech req. His grading system is strange and his tests are not the typically RVC multiple choice test. You get fooled by the little note taking in class. You have to READ! If you can,find/share with someone that has the Wood book. Its locally published..no one will buy it back..He edited it so it feels like a bit of an ego booster
Best Teacher at RVC. He made the worst class actually bearable. He doesn't lecture too much, barely gives tests or homework. Wish he taught more classes.
His grading system is very odd, there are 4 speeches over the course of the semester and you have to get 3 A's in order to recieve an A in the class. He is critical of what you say in your speech if he doesn't agree with it and he doesn't let you talk about topics that involve gun control, abortion, etc. Monotone but he wasn't too bad as a prof
I didn't like his class. He was very rude to a few people, especially when they would take a minute longer on a quiz, he laughed at one person for doing this. He repels technology so he is very strict about internet sources, nomatter how sound. WATCH OUT FOR CELL PHONES!If he spots one before class he will get in your face. Pushes his beliefs also.
Very monotone and very boring class. He makes you get to know your classmates in the beginning so it's fun being close to your whole class. His grading is really weird though...his quizzes have like 4 question (literally) even though he makes you cover a ton of material. Speech topics are limited because he wants variety (i would too).
His class is run like its going to change your life, its not, just your GPA. His grading isn't point based and its not the normal grading scale. If you just follow the guidelines for the speeches, outlines, and etc.: you'll be fine. Don't bother trying to be an activist in the class. He has an obvious bias and can be rather cynical.
He is an okay professor. His grading is really goofy. When you do your speeches he really picks apart everything in your speeech. His quizzes are not so bad just make sure you read the chapters from the Wood book and understand them well.
Terrible teacher. He made us read a book not even related to speech. It was about some history book he edited. He probably makes a profit for selling each book. Grading scale is weird so he kinda has the shots on making your grade. He blinks a lot for a terrible habit which distracted me.
That class was so boring. I hate that I had to read a book that had nothing to do with teaching us how to improve our speech presentations. Then he would make us take a test with only a couple of hard questions based on dreadful chapters from a boring biography without enough time to finish it. He's nice and does care about your grade but no thanks
great professor--one of RVC's best
Mr. Ross is a wonderful professor. His grading system is a little funky, but all in all I liked it. He's quite empathetic. I was teetering between and A and a B but he saw how much effort I put into my last speech and gave me an A for the class. He notices if you're making an effort and gives you benefit of the doubt. Definitely recommend him.
Took several of Dave's classes. You get what you put into them. Contrary to many people's beliefs, he's not rigid in his belief system. I constantly went against the norm, without issue. If you do the work well, and do it right, you get a good grade, simple as that. Best prof I had at RVC, by far.
GREAT teacher. Very nice and down to earth. Can be boring and monotone though. He makes it easy to speak in front of the class. It is a very comfortable and friendly atmosphere. My favorite class. Practically no notes. He gives a study guide for the quizzes that makes it very easy. Reading material is boring, but the study guides help.
I liked Professor Ross; in the beginning, he gets us familiarized with our classmates (though we tend to hang out with our own friends). I HATE speaking in front of people, but, for some reason, I had the confidence to speak out in his class. The only negative thing about his class was we had to read a book that had NOTHING to do with speech....
Professor Ross is an excellent teacher! He makes his class very comfortable and you get to know your classmates which makes you feel more at ease when it comes to giving a speech. Professor Ross wants all his students to suceed and he helps you so that you can do so. I would recommend him to anyone.
SPEECH CLASS SUCKS ALL TOGETHER BUT HE DOESN'T JUST MAKE YOU GET UP THERE IN FRONT OF THE CLASS HE LETS YOU WORK YOUR WAY UP TO IT. HIS QUIZZES AND TEST ARE DUMB AS EVER, BUT IF YOU AVOIDED SPH TILL THE END HE IS THE ONE TO TAKE BECAUSE YOUR EXP WILL NOT BE BAD AT ALL
Good class he grades hard.
Here's the simple, non-sugarcoated truth. He's alright. i think he is alittle old fashioned and unclear about what he wants, but he is an otherwise "ok" teacher. he dosen't post grades online..or uses letter grades so that is really annoying. you don't know your grade all semester, but he generally is understanding about missing class. i got a c
His class is pretty easy. He's pretty monotone but overall he is a good teacher and has good character as a teacher. He wants you to succeed. Make sure you know when quizzes are!
he's a wonderful teacher will a good attitude. He likes to help students, he's nice and will help you write your speeches and papers. Very good teacher
Great Professor, very intelligent, loves to help his students. Wish he was my Professor all the time.
very easy and somewhat helpful. we dont use the book in class but you absolutely need it to study for quizzes which are very easy. Hes a nice flexible person. dont text in class. he knows. this class is a breeze. didnt have to worry or stress at all. make good notecards and you'll be fine.
Best Speech prof I have ever had
TAKE THIS MAN FOR SPEECH! i literally dread giving speech and thought I would hate speech class, but Mr. Ross is great. He is an easy grader and super understanding, no one will fail his class. No quizzes or tests just three speeches and an interview that are all super chill. only need the textbook for the final
He truly cares about his students and will do whatever it takes to make a difference and help you succeed! Ask for help w speech he goes out of his way if you just put in effort. Take notes& read sections of book outlined for you! I have bad anxiety & was terrified of speaking & he made class enjoyable! I thank God that he put me in this class! (
Mr. Ross is probably my favorite teacher this semester.. maybe even that I've ever had. It's obvious he cares about his students and he is very understanding with people who are scared to give speeches. He is very friendly and the class is easy. Definitely going to come to him for help in the future
Mr. Ross was a very good teacher. He understands that life happens but don't expect a handout. The speeches are pretty casual with smaller audiences until the last speech. He does a very good job of making students comfortable giving speeches. He invites his students to always come back for help if they need to do a speech in the future.
He is so nice and sweet. I struggled without the book since that's where a lot of test material came from. Only a few speeches that are easy. Overall pretty easy class if you study for the tests.
TAKE HIM. He understands we all dread speeches and get nervous and he helps us work through it. Our first speech was in front of 5 people, second in front of half the class, third in front of class for 2 min. Attendance is not mandatory and he even asks you not to come most days. HE IS AMAZING, caring, and so sweet.
Very personable and easy-going, he makes a great effort to get to know each student individually. He understands the struggles of giving speeches but still expects you to meet the necessary criteria. The speeches are not hard assignments and he gives ample time to prepare. Tests are relatively easy if you study the textbook.
awesome guy
Understands the nerves, will help you through it. Easy to moderate grader; no pressure speeches, but he offers great feedback. Takes the sting off the first speech class, and our class was fun. Great office hours; e-mailed him/stopped by multiple times: speaks slowly and with emphasis, always making you feel valued.
Understanding, but still strongly sticks to his grading criteria. Fairly difficult class but so doable if you put in time and effort.
Is really laid back and kind, but the tests are almost impossible. He didn't give us clear things to study or ANY reading assignments, but expected us to know it all for the test. Unless you can give this class your 100% focus and attention you probably won't pass
You only have to do 3 speechs. 1 informative, 1 persuasive, and 1 inspirational. You also have 2 written exams. At first glance the class seems like not too much work and fairly easy. WRONG! Ross is one of the hardest graders I have ever gotten. You may have to do less speeches than other teachers but he is a 10 times harder grader than the othes
Gives test in speech who does that. The test are in his own words nothing from the book. No xtra credit offered. Tells long drawn out stories boaring takes for ever to get to the point.I reccomend any that wants to take speech don't take this class with him.
You only have 3 speeches to do. 1)Informative in front of 5 people 2)Persuasive in front of half the class 3)Inspirational with the entire class. The speeches are not the hard part of this class BUT the written exams murdered my grade. He grades pretty harshly especially on the exams which I didn't have a clue when we learned what was on them.
Ross is such a down-to-Earth teacher. He understands that speeches are hard, so he helps you in any way he can. There's only 3 speeches, each adding more people to the audience, so it helps build up the confidence. I received all A's on my 3 speeches, but the exams dropped by grade down to a final grade of a C. You need to study hard for them.
He seems super nice at first and he says dont worry about your grade. He isnt my favorite teacher. Hes probably my least favorite teacher. On the tests (yes theres tests for a speech class) he said dont write the definition out of the book, put it in your own words. But then he doesnt want it in your words. Most of the class dropped the class
David Ross is a nice guy. I got A's on all 3 of my speeches, but we had two exams that made no sense what so ever!! We hardly ever had a "lecture" & when we did the material on the exams had nothing to do with the actual lecture. I asked a few of my friends who were also taking speech classes & they said they didn't take any exams in their classes
Unless this class is the only thing you need to focus on in your life, I wouldn't recommend. He is so sweet and caring, his speeches are basically all easy A's, but the exams are absolutely impossible. Almost my entire class failed out or dropped. Not worth the pain when you can learn just as much with another teacher. Wouldn't take again.
Out of 5 of my courses, the only one Im doing bad in. Im not a fan of his grading system at all. I wish we could get a preview of our professors before selecting them in a course.
Do not take Mr. Ross. Everyone told me to drop him as soon as I got my class schedule and I should have listened. He does nothing in class that has anything to do with his tests. You need to read at home, which does not engage students and means no questions are asked about the material.
Difficult, his style of teaching is unusual compared to what most would experience. Few assignments and only worth a few points, (if you mess up and get a 2/3 on something it significantly drops your grade). Not clear on what he wants or says one thing one day and changes it for the next class. Won't let speak if you mess up on something small.
This class is based off of 30 points. In order to get an A you need to get between 27-30 points, which is impossible with how hard he grades. There are two tests, which everyone failed. He doesnt teach much, just talks about nothing. Very boring teacher and rude. Drop the class if you have him, it isnt worth it.
Professor Ross is a chill guy, but the tests given in his class were extremely hard and even with the papers he gave us in class to study for the exam, none of it was on the tests. The speeches were fine and pretty easy but its the tests that really don't incorporate any valuable information.
Hes a really good instructor. Very flexible.
The most significant thing about Ross is his care for students. Takes time outside of class to talk about assignments, encourages ways one might do better, and grading fairly, he is the best professor I've had at this school. The only students who have issues in my class are the ones who don't do their work. ;) Take Ross and get your money's worth
Seems like a chill guy but hes a tough grader. Hell tell you what he expects in your speech and then the day later its not what he wants. He takes points on how you dress for speech and how offend you look at your audience and how your speech is. He claims hes a fair grader but I dont think so, I dont recommend him.
Professor Ross is one of my favorite teachers at RVC. He is clear in what he expects, incredibly kind, and wants to see you succeed. No tests and optional reading. The speeches were generally pretty easy as long as you follow his outline. You don't give speeches in front of the entire class either, it's split up into two groups. I learned a lot.
