Schmidt is awesome. A really good teacher and he says weird funny things all the time.
Probably one of the best math teachers i've ever had... he actually cares whether or not you understand the material
I don't know what everyone's raving about, he's OK, but I've had better teachers.
Most soothing math voice, ever.
he writes everything down

SCHMIDT-Y BABY!!!! Dude is awesome. The bomb math prof...man I got As because he conveyed the material oh so well. I say we nominate him for Math Dept Chair!!! Gooood guy. Has a heart. FINALLY!
by far the easiest class I've ever taken, mostly because it was schmidt. actually, he was a little TOO easy - my test avg was above 100 which is about 30 pts higher than most classes
got in A in calc 1 with him, now i'm in his calc 2 class. hopefully i'll get an A or B. gives good notes and helpful review problems before exams. an A or B is possible in this class, unlike with most classes here.
Hands down the best all around professor at RPI.
Nice Guy. Excellent Teacher. Great Attitude.
Great Prof.
never showed up to class and still got an A just from reading my buddy's notes
This class was simply TOO EASY. All his tests are out of 105 so you have 5 points to mess up with and still get a 100. Not hard material at all. He explains things very well and is just an easy prof in general. Best math prof I've had by far.
He was very clear in explaining the material, and the tests were never a surprise (and fairly easy).
best prof ever. made freshman year way easier. if you do really bad in its class its your own fault
The best teacher in the entire department.
TAKE MATH CLASSES WITH SCHMIDT!!! If you put any effort into the class and do homework, you WILL get an A. Its not that the material is easy; he is a really good teacher.
Yes im one of the few schmidt grads. Two semesters with this guy, and it was well worth it, teaches what u need to know and a great guy. Stop by his office hours good guy to talk to.
He is awesome....i took 2 classes with im...Calc 1 and Diff Eq....he is very personable...very approachable...if u are good to him hes good to u ...
Had him for calc I and II and I can honestly say that I hated it. Bad Prof, no matter what anyone else says.
i studied a lot and still didnt do as well as i wanted to... it sux that most ppl who do well r taking calc after taking ap... ppl like me get screwed occasionally
I recommend Schmidt for any Math course. Believe me, if you can't get a good grade in his class, you wouldn't in the other ones either. Speaks so clearly and softly in lecture I'd often fall asleep.
very clear, does proofs for everything
AWESOME prof! So clear
Professor was helpful.
dave schmidt is the coolest guy in the world. and also the only one who has ever been able to teach me calculus. he is nice, understanding, and very helpful and will go out of his way for you.
Very good lecturer. Explains the material clearly and concisely. I thought multivar would be hard, but he has made it seem easy because he's so good at teaching it. Also very friendly and grades leniently.
spends a lot of time on un-important topics
Monotomic voice at times but he makes sure you understand what your learning. Very good teacher, you learn alot but it doesn't seem like he's rushing through it.
Great teacher, explains well without rushing, little bit of a boring voice but does many examples and is very helpful. one of the better teachers at RPI.
Very good teacher. Explains everything very clearly in lecture; altough sometimes seems so clear can lead to false sense of security. Highly recommended!
Very easy for calc 2, very nice guy too. Explains things very well. Best math teacher I've ever had.
Great professor, teaches very clearly, good dry sense of humor, very reasonable tests that are easy if you pay attention in class, highly recommended.
good teacher, no bullsh*t, very fair tests and grading
Good teacher, lectures are interesting. Fair tests.
very clear, the best teacher i've had at rpi
Best professor there is at RPI, exams are more than fair, and he covers material very clearly. If you need help he can teach help you learn anything during his office hours. Very good at teaching! and a very nice guy on top of that
Is extremely clear in his lectures. If you go to class and study your notes his tests will not drop many surprises on you. Great teacher.
"He has one of the most soothing math voices you'll ever hear." >>>>>> He's helpful, clear, and he sounds like he should be on the radio.
Prof. Schmidt is great, his tests are fair and he covers the material in multiple ways so you are sure to understand it.
Great guy. Explains stuff clearly and taught very useful material. Get him as a prof. if you can.
Compared with other professors at RPI, Professor Schmidt is amongst the very best at teaching. His lectures are crystal clear, the format of the course is very straight forward, no tricks. Tests are fair and follow the lectures very closely.
Best math teacher at rpi.
schmidt is the man. best math teacher at rpi. simple, kinda funny, smart, and crystal clear in every single lecture. if you get a chance to have him as a teacher, dont pass it up. schmidt you the man.
The nicest and most organized professor at the institute.
Great professor, easy to understand.
Hard to find a better calc I teacher. Good notes, easy to understand.
dave is the man. had him for both calc one and two and if it wasnt for the goddamn gateway wouldve easily had A's in both. he is very intelligent and is a great teacher. grades fairly as well
Best Prof at RPI (a school filled with horrible professors)
One word AWSOME
He is a great professor, as clear as they get and is more than fair on his exams. Taking him will be a good investment in the money you put into RPI
There's just something about him. He is the clearest, most even-toned individual you will ever hear speak. It's almost to the point of being creepy. You will never miss a word he says. He does do a wierd flick think with his pens though. I found that distracting.
No question, he is the best!
He's not that good!
I didn't like how he speaked at first, but you start to appreciate how he orders things as time goes. Plus he saves lives in Diff EQ
d-schmidt is the man...he is a walking textbook!
Awesome professor. Highly reccomended. Very soothing voice, if he wasnt a math teacher, he would def. be reading audio books professionally. Peace!
He will blow your mind with made-up math words. Excellent.
He did alright. He really is a walking textbook - he knows his stuff. Probably the best prof if you are looking to learn the material.
Simply the best. Fair test and grading system.
Schmidt is as good as they get. He was excellent back when I took Calc 2... and his online videos saved me from certain doom in Diff Eq. Thanks Dave!!
great explanations
Didn't realize how much I liked his class till I took Diff Eq with another professor (Kovacic). I would give anything for shmidt! The best applied math professor at RPI!
Simply amazing. Fair tests for all. Fair grading. Very easy to understand. Great professor. The best math professor at RPI for Calc II
had him three semesters in a row- calc 1,2, and Diff Eq-- and he was the most amazing professor.. very awesome
take schmidt for any math class that you need to take that he offers. best professor for math at the school, hands down. some call him boring, but its just cause he does his job and you learn the information. clear as that.
explains everything in a simple way , easy to follow and understand, tests are reasonable, mostly on what's done in class. nothing dramatic
Great at explaining things in a way that makes sense, and not at all boring to listen to. The classes (Calc 1 & 2, and MultiVar) are pretty easy, too.
Prof Schmidt has a voice that put me to sleep, but his class isn't bad. Be respectful in class. Turn off your cell phone, don't come in late and DON'T TALK. Having a good or bad TA can make a difference. Stick with the hw and you are golden. Most people blow off the lectures and get behind. Don't do that! You'll have a HUGE advantage.
Schmidt is the best math professor at RPI, it's as simple as that. I got an A in diffEQ with a totally horrible professor after taking Calc I and II with Schmidt because he prepares you well. Very very fair. Also, if you need DiffEQ help he has long distance learning videos online that are a total godsend.
schmitty is the man! he's the best math teacher ever. his lectures are super clear and easy to follow... take his classes! i wish he taught diff eq
The tests are pretty easy, he does lots of examples, and everything you need to know is in the notes. Just go to class and do the homework! Some of the TAs are a little difficult though.
awesome teacher
No Comments
He's really hot and good. AND 110/100.
Awesome prep before exams, makes sure you know how to do every type of problem, no suprises on tests. Explains as much as necessary to make sure you understand, best math prof around
a wonderful teacher, makes everything easy to understand. If you can manage it in your schedual take theis prof for as many math classes as you can!!
BEST MATH TEACHER EVER. Clear.
Quite possibly the easiest class I've taken at RPI, yet I still feel I learned a great deal of information. He organizes his lectures well, is fair with his tests, and gives optional homework. Recitation complemented lecture perfectly. I recommend this class for all engineers to take to enhance their math knowledge.
Schmidt = God
Seriously, this man is the best teacher I've ever had. Very clear and organized. His classes may seem easy, but he explains the material so well that you just have to know what you're doing.
SCHMIDT IS SIMPLY THE MAN
Schmidt is the man. Seriously, he teaches well, exams aren't hard, and he doesn't put people to sleep in my experience (unlike other professors here) and knows what he's doing.
I didnt have him but Schmidt videos saved my life. I thought my friends were on something when they were excited about watching a prof. work out porblems online but there is reason for excitment. They somehow are interesting and very very very helpful
great prof! knew what he was talking about and he KNOWS HOW to teach it too!
He is the best teacher that I've ever had. He clearly explains everything and does great examples. His videos are great too. If you have the option to take a class with him, do it. He not only makes it easy to learn and really understand the material but he also makes it interesting.
Schmidt is the man! He is very clear, and explains things very well. Also great to listen to him talk... if you watch his lectures, he talks JUST like that in class. It's rather soothing. He has perfect handwriting, and writes out everything so you have time to take good notes. Exams are tough and tricky though.
Excellent teacher! Very clear lectures and fair tests. Homework sheets list problems on the book that are generally doable without a calculator. EXTREMELY helpful during office hours--he caught me up on three weeks of material in half an hour. Highly recommended overall.
The way he teaches makes you understand. Even if you don't think you get it, you really are learning. He's amazing like that.
Prof Schmidt is the best teacher i have ever had...ever! He explains everything clearly, and has really nice handwritting too. I recommend him to anyone who has an opportunity to have him! : )
He is hands down the best calculus teacher in the world. He teaches super basic and easy stuff; he's really REALLY good at explaining it. AND he posts videos of him doing common problems online. So you NEVER have to go to class and you can still get an A. All I did was watch the videos before each test and I averaged a 100. Praise be to Schmidt. :)
With all the hype, I think you can see hes a good professor. He's very clear and thoughtful in his presentations.
WOW! Best math teacher here...perhaps the best teacher here in general.
WOW..best math teacher on campus. Hands down.
SCHMIDT = GOD. Enough said.
Professor Schmidt is a whiz at providing exceedingly useful, informative, and clear lectures and fair exams. He is a model for RPI math professors.
Professor Schmidt is amazing. I'm taking my fourth class with him now. The man's a god.
Goes slow, clarifies even the simplest points. Tests are decent as long as you understood what was going on in the class.
I took his classes in the Fall 00 & Spring 01. I can still remember the HOT prof! He provides clear notes. His exams are super easy. Once I didn't go to his class, and he was okay with it. He explained things over again to during office hours. But the question is, are easy exams good for students? Will students learn much?
We wish, One day every professor will bacame a SCHMIDT !!.
i'm using his DiffEQ videos because my DiffEQ prof is aweful at life
I came into Schmidt's class without ever haven taken Calc and a weak base in Precalc. In class, I feel he skips steps a lot. I learned more easily from tutors, but overall, his tests are A LOT easier than the other Calc teacher's. Problems on his tests are pretty much similar if not exactly the same as the backtests.
Definitely the best teacher at RPI. My weak background in Calculus strengthened exponentially (pun intended) after taking his course. His test problems are very fair. No monkey wrenches or tricks thrown in. I don't advocate skipping recitation and skills classes, but his lectures are all you need. Very systematic and clear. Thumbs up all the way!
WOW... best math teacher i've ever had. I thought i knew calc before taking his class but I was wrong. His videos for diff eq. are also extremely helpful.
Discreet structures; I wouldn't buy the textbook, you wont need it. Prof. Schmidt explains everything quite clearly.
Schmidt is popular because he gives straightforward tests and explains everything clearly and concisely, even though he takes the time to prove some equations which can be a bit tedious. He is excellent at math and has an above average vocabulary. For me, Schmidt is the epitome of a great teacher. He knows where many student's difficulties lie.
I had Prof Schmidt during my undergraduate degree at RPI for Calculus I,II, and Discrete Structures. He is an excellent teacher and seems to enjoy it. I highly recommend his courses. Top 5 RPI professor.
Is the second best professor I've ever had... even through my master's degree. I have never seen such a man in academia with that dedication and knowledge of the material and the way he is able to project himself to the class and deliver the material in a clear, understandable way. I wish I could go back and sit in one of his lectures.
I dont think he liked me much, but I still have to admit he was a fantastic math teacher, probably the best one at rpi.
Best professor by far. Easy to understand. Tests are easy.
Awesome professor, really easy to understand and his tests aren't that bad.
Fantastic teacher. Clear, helpful, and a little bit funny. his videos are the best study tool ever. When you're in class you don't realize that you're learning, but you really are.
Although classes are very boring, he knows his stuff. The tests were fair but the final was much harder than the class ever was.
His lectures are easy to follow and he explains the material very clearly. The homework is optional, but does a good job of preparing you for the exams, which are pretty straightforward. As long as you attend lectures or work the homework problems, it's a very easy class. I took two courses with him and would be happy to take another.
I felt that he was very clear when explaining new topics in a way that I understood them. It was not an easy class, but if you want to learn then this is the class that you can excel in.
Best prof ever, even though I hate math.
Calculus II was an interesting course. Schmidt is an awesome teacher, and his TAs were awesome too (Joanie and Kai at the time). I learned a lot in his class, though at times I felt like things were coming out of left field (like when we were expected to know L'Hospitals). I think doing the optional homework would have helped a bit though, lol.
Took calc 1 and IDS with him... I have a general dislike for math, but Schmidt clearly explained everything and where it came from. I passed the class no problem by attending and paying attention. tho doing the optional homework would most likely have improved my grade Best teacher I've had at RPI. would take his classes anytime
very awesome teacher. he knows his math, AND he knows how to teach to students, two qualities that often do not come together. He actually answers your questions in class, rather than just re-stating what he has just said in lecture. very, very, very, good, especially if you are not doing so hot with your math grades.
This man is a living math GOD. He is perfect to learn from and other professors wish they could be him. :) Schmidt is the man!
A freakin math yoda. Very clear, step-by-step, and good handwriting too. The best.
he is amazing
I like his class ;)
Great teacher. Very clear on how to solve problems, tons of in-class examples, and having frequent quizzes with no required homework was better than the opposite.
Great for Calc II, boring for Discreet. That might not be his fault though, that's just a terrible class.
This is by far the best professor I had in RPI. Had him for Calculus and DFQs back in the day and when I am in town I go to one of his lectures just for fun... Kudos for Schmidt...
Great teacher, easy to understand, approachable. No curving though.
Professor is probably one of the most knowledgable math people I know. Is very smart and enjoys teaching. Tests aren't too bad either.
Awesome Discrete prof
Very helpful in class, answers are very detailed. However, when he is sick, he tends to be very loud about it; be warned! Seriously though, he is a great professor.
I had Schmidt for Calc II, and he was pretty much the best thing that could have happened for me. He has a gift for explaining things in a way that most people can understand. His level of clarity is far beyond any other professors I've had here. I would recommend him for any math class you're taking.
Crystal clear lecturer. Runs a great class. Personable. What else are you looking for? Actually that brings me to another point, girls think he's hot.
Great guy. After sleeping through a test, I went to office hours and he let me take it no problem.
To teach a class such as calculus, such a crystal clear professor is essential. He explains things so well in class, with a great number of examples, that I didn't exactly have to study outside of class.I really liked how instead of just giving the students formulas to use,he explained how to derive them. This way,I was able to remember them better!
It's the best math teacher I've ever met! His lecture is clear and the homework is really helpful to gain an A!
Excellent lecturer, homeworks are extremely useful for studying. Tests are somewhat easy depending on how well you know the material (no absurd amounts of work for a question), but he's a harsh grader.
No submission of homework
I've had Prof. Schmidt for two consecutive semesters and to tell you the truth, his lectures are boring. (he doesn't let you play on phone/electronic devices too), but his tests are really easy once you do few hw problems from the textbook. He also know what he's talking about, but might seem confusing or boring to some. He's awesome!
Great explanations of topics. Sometimes too in depth but always teaches thoroughly. Tests are slightly difficult but if you do homework well you will do fine on tests.
Schmidt is amazing and the best professor I've ever had. alsew hot
Schmidt is great. Easy to understand and breaks things down into very simple ideas. His tests are fair and representative of what you do in class and for homework.
Schmidt is the bomb. Like a nuclear bomb. Or like a hydrogen-cobalt bomb. Either way, he is a great teacher. To succeed in his classes, at least in multivar, do the optional homework, do the quizzes, and go to his study sessions before each test. He has got his stuff together and annihilates any weak points math students may have. Praise Dave
Great professor. Possibly the best lecturer I've encountered, giving crystal clear proofs and explanations. Also very good at answering questions asked by students in class (I find many professors don't answer the question asked. Homework is optional, but also is very helpful for test preparation. Highest of recommendations for this professor.
Lectures are boring. He's the most monotone teacher I've had and it's hard to stay awake if you go to class. Tests are 80% the back test which is good but I still wish I took the class with khiel because i learned nothing. I've heard he's much better for mutivar.
It might be surprising but you cannot float on prior knowledge of the material. Homework is optional but don't skip over it. Class is kind of dull but overall he really is not bad. Don't take him for all calc i, ii, multivar though unless you want to. Mix it up and see how the other professors work too. He is a good professor
Great teacher! Very clear and uses straight forward examples!
Professor Schmidt was a good professor for Multivariable CalcMatrix Algebra. Found the matrix algebra portion of the class to be somewhat more difficult but will vary for each student. Lectures are fast paced but he is very helpful in office hours and very approachable after class. Tests and quizzes are the only graded work.
Great professor. Lectures are clear and understandable.
Excellent instructor! Very clear during lecture!
In my 3 years at RPI, no other professor came close to Schmidt's clarity. He answers any potential questions you may have before you can even ask them! His exams are fair. He doesn't try to trick you. He cracks jokes in lecture from time to time and does not acknowledge them. His swag knows no bounds. I wish I could take this class again.
It's probably okay if you don't want to show up to lectures--the only things you're graded on are your tests and quizzes. But going to the lectures makes things simple. Course material is clearly presented and explained, homework questions are provided for practice and questions are always answered.
Dave Schmidt is one of my favorite professors I've had so far. I've taken classes with him twice now (Calculus 2 MATH1020 and Multivariable Calculus) and I find his lecturing style very easy to follow. Plus, he's very accessible outside of class, and it's obvious that he cares deeply about his students.
Schmidt is a good guy, but beware because he doesn't use LMS, so it might be difficult to balance focusing and note taking. I've heard this class is easier with another prof if you haven't taken Calc AB. Quizzes are no partial credit which sucks, but the exams are pretty straightforward. His handwriting might be one of his most redeeming qualities
Professor Schmidt is by far the most articulate professor I've had so far. He's the only math teacher/professor I've ever had that explains topics clearly, but more importantly he wants to make sure everyone understands WHY a particular theorem is the way it is. I would DEFINITELY take another class with him and I highly recommend him.
He is a caring professor and explains the topics lucidly. Taking notes in that class is essential if you want the A
Bless this amazing gentleman. The real mvp.
Schmidt is a real gem. I would have taken his Multivar class this semester but his class was filled before I could register for it. Also he's very friendly and super chill. One of the best professors I've ever had. Explains all content very clearly, and always sticks around after class to answer questions
Schmidt's lectures are insanely clear, he asks questions to ensure no one is confused, and holds a class prior to exams to just work through problems. If you do more than 2 backtests before an exam, you're guranteed to pass. Wish I had him for every math course.
Stupidly good, plain and simple. Lectures are insanely clear, extremely well organized, and well-suited for any lvl of student. Very willing to answer questions, and always gives a thorough answer. Focuses more on intuition than formulas, great for those looking for a deep understanding, even for applications beyond the course material.
He focuses on the "why" a little bit more than the "how." He wants to make sure you have a full understanding of the class, and why everything operates in the way that it does. Excellent teacher who makes sure everyone understands the content before continuing to more complex concepts.
Prof. Schmidt was the best professor I ever had at RPI. His lectures were easy to follow, his course was well designed, and he genuinely seemed to care about his students. I highly recommend him.
Overall, great professor. The initial lectures before a test are more conceptual and intangible in nature but as the test gets closer becomes more concrete with problems appearing straight on the exam. DEFINITELY check out the backwork before taking the tests. Blue matrix algebra book helpful for the final.
He is such a nice guy that I thought he might be the best among the math department. A really good lecturer and really kind to his students. The tests are not very tough and I don't think you will get a bad grade after reviewing all the questions he gives to you!
Probably the best/easiest RPI prof. for any MATH course. Tests are easy and simple but he doesn't give back exams, so study. HW is optional, but if you do that and show up for recitation you should be good. Do go to class and take notes, his notes are on the overhead projector so not posted online. Gives a review before exams too.
Extremely clear lectures. Gives lots of examples and will always ask if people have questions to make sure nobody is confused. For tests, go over one or two back exams and you're set since he keeps the same problems and equations but just changes the numbers
Straight out amazing. One of the best professor you get in RPI.
Learn how to do all the back test questions and you will get an A easily
Schmidt has very clear notes and lectures. Homework is not mandatory. Quizzes and Tests are very straight forward.
Lectures are like youtube tutorials on multivar, tests are easy, just like the homeworks (and similar to what is discussed in class). The final is just test questions from previous exams. No required homework. Easy quiz in recitation. Learned a lot and very easy class.
Lectures are very good and clear, both in content and in terms of speaking. The exams are very similar to old exams and the quizzes are generally pretty easy while teaching you how to do the math. Can be a little theory heavy and does not post notes or homework solutions online.
If you're taking Multivar, Schmidt is the way to go. His lectures are pretty interesting, but the only thing that matters is if you can get back tests -- exams are almost identical to previous semesters.
Solid lectures, easy tests that are like the same as the backtests. One of the few professors I felt was really fair with students.
All I did was show up and pay attention. He conveys the material in a way that is clear and easy to understand. Only downside was Covid cutting us off, to which he posted his lecture notes online. While instruction was still clear, losing the lectures was disappointing, to say the least.
Schmidt felt like a really easy professor, yet I always left his classes and tests feeling like I knew the material. He makes mid-level undergrad math about as approachable as it can be, fun lectures and well made tests, that are easy if you get how the concept works. There's also room for bonus points on tests. One of the best RPI math professors.
