Daily quizzes and a LOT of reading make this far from a no-brainer. Also, if you blog, don't say anything bad about him as he reads web pages linked student profiles...
If you actually pay attention in class it's not that hard to pass, but miss one of his lectures and you might have problems.
I liked his teaching style. Didn't go exactly by the book, but hit on the most important things. Not an easy teacher- i found him to be more difficult than most. But as long as you pay attention and keep up on the readings, it's enjoyable.
Awesome, fair class. He encourages higher-level thinking, and he presents material in a really interesting manner. If you take Intro to Soc, this is the prof you want!!!
Just go to class and read the articles and you should do fine in this class. He grades his papers a bit hard for an intro class, but that shouldn't affect your grade too much. Very interesting!

He is a wonderful teacher!!
As long as you go to class everyday, take notes and read articles and the book you will do fine. He is a very good teacher.
Do not take him????????????
He is one of the nicest profs i have ever had! He was a cool dude and was really interesting, which helped clarify points. I took the Family class with him as well. Study before the test and do the reading and you will be fine. Great teacher.
He is a very cool guy...but need to pay attention and read in order to do well in the class.
He is a very interesting professor, helpful, very nice, and understand, very enjoyable class
Very Great Teacher...makes class exciting and breaks info down to make sure everyone understands..
Honestly an easy class. Come to class, take notes, read the assigned parts of the book, and take quizes and exams. The lectures are amusing, the tests straight forward. NO CUMULATIVE FINAL EXAM !
Very easy, very helpful. Takes attendance and book is necessary to do well. Pay attention and take good notes. TA has good review sessions before every test/quiz. No cumulative exam. Take the smaller sized class, it's way easier for personal attention. Only taking another Sociology class because of my good experience!
great professor! fun! take class!
He is the best Sociology teacher I have had by far! I took him for this and the Family class. He is Fair, Helpful, Pretty Easy, and Interesting! I would recommend him to anyone who wants a good teacher in sociology. Cool guy outside the classroom too! What up Dave!
Great teacher! He is very entertaining and helps make the subject a lot fo fun!
Dave is an awesome Professor! He really makes the material interesting! His test and quizes are hard..you have to be prepared. If you go to class, take notes, and read the stories you will be fine. He is a really cool and funny guy. Although he is kinda wierd outside of class and not very socialble. His class was my favorite!
Very clear prof. very important to attend all lectures because practically all of exam material is based on lecture. very clear and also enjoyable to listen to.
****DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS*** too many quizez and papers to write. I rate him 1 out of 10.
This class has its highs and lows. The highs are that this professor is nice and laid back about due dates; the lows are excessive reading and you may never fully understand why you received the grade you were given... Cool professor, not so cool/clear grading policy.
Lots of quizzes and reading and doesn't share details on your grade at all. Students are oblivious to his grading policy throughout the semester, and you may still never know your "official" grade on several assignments at the end. If you care about your grade, and the means by which a professor determines it, I wouldn't advise this professor...
His lectures were always pretty interesting. He was rather helpful, and he graded fairly.
Helpful, nice, humorous, easy to understand. He's challenging but if you take good notes you'll do well.
Extremely laid back, but with that he he is extremely unorganized and forgetful. You will never know your grade throughout the sememster, as his grading policy is a bit foggy. Lots of reading is required for tests and quizzes, but on a positive note, there in no cummulative final. Would not recommend taking him. Worst professor I have had.
Dave is an awesome professor..He is extremely knowledgeable in his field and gives very interesting lectures. The tests are fairly easy as long as you keep up with the reading.. which by the wayis not nearly as bad as people are making it out to be..I dunno what these people expect in a college course.
I really enjoyed his class. Keeping up on the reading is extremely important but other than that he is really fair and understanding. I enjoyed his class and didn't miss much and ended up with an A.
very interesting class. i really liked it.
Amazing teacher. He's really into what he is teaching. He really cares about the material - and he'll make you laugh. Yeah, you have to read the book. If you can 'manage' to do that, you'll ace the tests with no problem. He's not really clear in his grading policy - but as long as you're not a fool and do all your work, you'll be fine.
Dave was absolutely my favorite teacher I have ever had. He was fun, but strict. He made his class very interesting with participation, stories, and humor. I would take his class over again without a doubt.
I really like Dave a lot. Pay attention in lecture, do the readings= A. He always kept my attention and has great stories
Lectures are really interesting, and I didn't find reading to be that essential to at least getting an A- on the quizzes. His essays do require you to do volunteer work and drive through some rough neighborhoods though.
Strong in a great teacher but an awful grader.I sent in my papers everytime for comments and he responded with the most grey of answers that helped VERY little. Then he tends to give most people the same grade on essay questions not matter what you put.
It seems like the people who don't like Prof. Strong are just lazy. This class is very clear and easy to follow if you just pay attention and do the work. It is obvious that Strong works hard and organizes the class well. He is very passionate about the class and keeps it interesting. Also keeps student's best interest in mind.
Hes a great guy, who really is passionate about teaching, and sociology. Has a good sense of humor, and tries to make class worth your time. I would recommend taking his sociology course.
This professor is a great guy. He loves sociology! He is very interesting, and makes the lectures fun. He is very fair. I took his social problems class last semester, and I am taking his 100 level class next semester! I would highly recommend him!
Awesome teacher!
Best Professor I've had
Great professor. He tells you everything you need to know for the exams. He makes the lectures fun and interesting. I would definitely recommend him!
AWESOME!
By far one of my favorite professors. He explains everything so well, and he's not afraid to be honest. I always looked forward to attending his classes. You NEED to attend all of the classes though. I highly recommend that you choose him.
Good teacher, but grades very harsh. If you need an A for Soc R100, don't take his class! Yeah, he is interesting and fun and all, but when it comes down to it, it's almost impossible to get an A which is crazy since its only a 100 level class! Also, quizzes/tests are timed, so if you're a slow taker, you're pretty much screwed.
Though he is funny at times, he tests you on ideas that are very general and opinionated. Also, grading on papers is hit or miss. I spent a week on the first one and received a b, but i typed the second one up in class the day it was due and received an A.
Likes: class was interesting, he doesn't give a cumulative final, it is a combination of the quizzes, not very many papers. Teacher is organized. Dislikes: Vague paper requirements, quizzes had a strict 15 minute times limit, swears ALL THE TIME.
Funnny guy. Returns quizzes promptly. I took his Friday morning class, which I expected to be dreadful, but he made each class worth getting up early. Take any of the courses he teaches! Just be prepared to actually do your work.
Awesome teacher!! He gets people involved in the discussions he has, uses examples from students' lives as well as his own. Completely prepares us for upcoming exams, and rewards us for being at class on time. His voice is very dynamic when instructing, making it interesting. Humor and sarcasm add interest as well. He is a Breath of fresh air!
His lectures are very interesting, he gets the entire class involved. It is very important to do the readings in this class as he usually has them on quizzes. He is very easy to approach and talk about the class and and questions and makes himself very available outside of class.
Keeps it very interesting
I took Dave's summer session course and wouldn't advise taking with anyone else. He's passionate and animated about what he teaches and has a great sense of humor to keep class engaging. no tests; Quizzes are not hard, he gives study guides and hints...skim the readings to get main idea. You must write 3 papers; not bad just don't fall behind.
He is really funny, uses real life examples, and interacts with the class. Grading is pretty decent too. There are no tests, just quizzes and papers. He also gives a study guide for every quiz, because of that they are kind of hard. I'm good at sociology, but I only got a perfect on the essay once. He is not the best at responding to emails though.
Dave's a sweetheart. He's silly and interesting with his lectures. He adds examples we can all relate to. He also opens up the discussion, so classmates can share anecdotes. Grading was fair. Quizzes were fairly superficial with the readings. The papers did not require too much work, but then again, I got Bs on those.
Good prof though the actual subject matter isn't very interesting to me.
his papers are kind of difficult but he does not give tests... only quizzes which rocks. also he dropped our lowest one of the semester
The lectures are really interesting however you do need to do the reading to pass this class. He doesn't give good feedback on papers.
Dave is a very funny professor. He gives quizzes every fourth class which requires you to do all of the assigned readings. He will start putting questions directly from readings if he senses the class is not doing them. His 3 papers are extremely tough and subjective. And he seems reluctant to give anyone anything higher than an A- on anything!
I LOVED Dave's lectures. He made them really interesting and mixed things up a lot. He gives quizzes instead of tests which is great. You do have to write three very specific papers and he grades them critically. If you attend class, do the readings, study a little, and spend a good amount of time on the papers you'll do great.
Extremely unorganized professor. Feedback was useless. Prompts were too open-ended leaving students confused as to what the focus of the essay was. DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR. Not the easy A I was expecting- awful professor.
Try to attend every class. Add your own notes to his outlines, and study them before quizzes. Spend time on the papers. Long lectures, but stay until the end because material will be on the quiz that you can only get from lecture, not the book. He's a great teacher and makes things very easy to understand.
I love Dave.
This was by far my favorite class during my first semester. His lectures can be interesting and he can be really funny! I will say on the quizzes do not expect a perfect grade because that rarely ever happens. He is a tough essay grader to say the least. You never have any big tests but there are 3 papers and a quiz every two weeks.
dave strong is a passionate involved professor.
I LOVE DAVE STRONG. I leave his class every day in a better mood because he is so funny and entertaining. His lectures are very easy to follow. He is honest, sensitive to all cultures, and papers are easy to write because he wants you to apply his lessons and readings to your own life. I would recommend him to everyone!
He's a very great professor and makes sociology interesting to learn about! He structures his course very well! He never gives a true test. Just 8, 20 point quizzes! He posts very helpful study guides on canvas before each quiz! You'll definitely need to read, but not too thoroughly, just enough to get the gist of the readers. Would recommend!
David Strong takes a 100- introduction level course and treats it as if it is a 300 level course. He does not believe in tests or quizzes so we have veryyyyy vague discussion posts and essay prompts that are near impossible to correctly answer. The discussion posts and frustrating because he grades very harshly.
I really enjoyed this class. He made Sociology interesting and his video lectures were not boring. We didn't have any tests but you had to write four essays and online discussion posts are required to pass. I would highly recommend him.
Dave was everything I wanted in a professor. Awesome feedback, lectures flew by, interesting examples and he really knows his stuff. I missed a paper and he didn't take it personal, he was very straightforward and respected his students and had our respect. Everyone seemed happy to be in his class and we all walked away from it knowing more!
You will have to read, take advantage of study guides, just go to lecture - he tells plenty of stories instead of real lectures but rarely quizzes on that kind of stuff. Tough grader but you'll get an idea of what he wants eventually
Good professor. Took the class online so it was all paper based, a total of 4, and discussion posts. I personally thought the material was interesting but the papers were difficult for me. Video lectures and lots of reading. Not a horribly tough grader, gives the option to write a 5th paper to replace one of your lower papers, which is nice.
Professor Strong is overall a good professor. There is a lot of reading for the class and there is a total of 5 essays instead of tests and quizzes. You will have a lot of discussion posts, usually one every week. Gives great feedback and allows you to submit your rough draft essay for review. Great guy and pretty easy class.
He doesn't believe in exams but he does believe in papers and scheduled quizzes. Make sure to do the readings as the quizzes come directly from them! Overall he is very interesting so coming to lecture won't be bad.
Great Prof! Makes lectures fun and interesting. He is very relateable as well. Totally reccomend!
He is a very funny guy and his lectures are always entertaining! However he is a very tough grader on his quizzes and the three essays we have to write. He will help you with any problems you have and he truly wants everyone to succeed.
Overall, there's no doubt he knows what he's talking about and that he's a great professor. Only quizzes and essays; no exams. He grades pretty hard; doesn't give out A's that easily. Lectures were great and he has the class participate in discussions a bit. You really need to work hard for a good grade. GO TO MENTORING. Read. (intro to soc.)
Dave is a great sociology instructor. He's very knowledgable and passionate about what he teachers and I wholeheartedly believe he wants you to succeed. However, he isn't just going to give you a pass. You have to apply yourself and do the require readings and well participate in the discussion posts. There are no exams, but essays instead.
Very picky grader and expects a lot out of every assignment. Requires you to watch all the material videos and textbooks and incorporate them into all of the papers you have to write every other week. I expected this class to be more about sports, but ended up being more like a lecture on how white men have ruined sports for women and minorities.
David Strong is an awesome professor, period. However, for being an intro class, I think it makes it a little too difficult. He's truly passionate about teaching and everything about sociology. He starts getting behind with grading in the middle of the semester, and you won't know your standing grade until the end.
Overall, Professor Strong was defintely a great professor. He explained things in very simple ways and provided a many examples and stories. His grading criteria was pretty straightforward. If you come to class, pay attention, and take good notes, then you should be pretty solid. I would definitely take another class with him again. No exams!!
Dave is a fantastic professor. If you show up to class and pay attention you will be fine. There are some readings that have to be done outside of class that are important if you want to pass the quizzes but they aren't very long and he is always available for questions.
Very hard grader. Do not know many people who received 20/20 on the quizzes. Went to most of the mentoring and still didn't get 20/20 on the quizzes. Especially grades hard when it comes to the writing portion on the quizzes. Only papers and quizzes. No homework and no extra credit.
I took this thinking it was an easy A grade w/ workload of my science classes. Instead, I ended w/ straight A's in my sciences & B+ here. He gives 15 mins per quiz total w/ 3 essay qs. There are Three Papers which are graded on his knit picks. Good luck to all! READ Evicted before this class. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! ATTENDANCE COUNTS as 5% of grade.
Took this SPR19 w/ my science classes. I got an A's in sciences & B+ here. He makes you work for your grades. He's a harsh grader. If you're looking for an Easy A, don't take this class! Read Evicted before. Be ready for 15 min quizzes & 3 essays Qs/quiz. He gets annoyed by questions over email. Attendance counts as 5%. The grading scale is weird
Doesnt believe in tests discussion questions instead of test. You just need to answer them with some thought and youll get the points. Overall great teacher highly suggest his 8 week course.
Very passionate prof that knows what he's talking about. HOWEVER, if you are looking for an easy A, already taking rigorous classes, or are not a social sciences major, I do not recommend him. ALL material is writing. He doesn't treat this as an intro to soc class and expects you to learn and understand the material, not just memorization.
Professor Strong is terrible! Doesn't make any sense and his lectures are awful! Go take a different sociology course! I am usually a really good student but he makes no sense and I am playing a guessing game when it comes to how to respond to his assignments.
I learned a lot in this class. A lot of reading, and a ton of writing. I really liked the class regardless. I would absolutely take more of his classes. Great teacher and really cares about what he is teaches. His excitement made me excited. He is a picky grader but takes the time to give a lot of feedback, and offers zoom calls to ask questions.
Prof Dave has revamped his classes! I took this call in the Fall 2021 and it was amazing! You have to work for your grade with bi-weekly quizzes, but he gives a study guide, and a few essays! He delivers his lectures with compassion and great clarity. If you listen, you can tap into his knowledge and learn great things! Awesome instructor!
Terrible. This class is so politically biased and all lectures are sided with one agenda. He grades papers like he thinks he's an English teacher. This class has zero diverse thinking, so you might like it if you're narrowminded.
Seemed to enjoy sociology
I loved the lectures, you could tell he was extremally passionate about sociology and in the first week he let the class know what they were getting into making sure people were prepared to take his class.
R333 - Sports and Society: Prof was good, but graded very tough. No late discussion posts, no exceptions! Grades papers VERY harshly, I'm normally an A student but struggled just to get B's on papers. A lot of reading, and expectation that we had a strong background in Sociology already. Wouldn't take him again.
Professor Strong does an amazing job. His lectures are super interesting, and he has a true passion for sociology. If you go to class, pay attention, take notes you will succeed in this class. I am excited to in the near future take another class with him!
He is a very heavy grader. Expects so much on discussion posts, have only got 1 12/12 out of 10 of them. His lectures are bad! Talks about stuff that isn't related to the topic.
If you want to take a class where you're degraded every meeting, take Dave's class. Also if you want to put all of your effort into his paper don't be surprised when you get a god-awful grade and a laugh in your face. He is very politically biased narrow-minded and borderline derogatory. Do not take his class if you have the power to not.
Prof Strong was awesome- the lectures were super engaging. Attendance matters; he covers something new each class, but his lectures are easy to sit through. He could be a bit of a tough grader on discussion posts (mostly giving 11/12s) but he always gave great feedback on how to improve your posts for future assignments. Overall 10/10 recommend!
Professor Dave is awesome! Don't go into this class expecting an easy A. You will have to work for every point. Try not to miss lecture if you can. Interesting content and Professor Dave gives great lectures. Highly recommend this class if you're interested in the subject and are willing to put the work in!
His lectures are interesting, but he does not provide physical notes. It seems like he expected us to have a solid background in sociology when I thought it was an introduction class. Attendance is not mandatory but it is HIGHLY encouraged you don't skip as you will fall behind.
Get ready to read!! I spent a lot of time reading and taking notes over this class, however, the readings are actually really enjoyable. Be prepared to spend a lot of time towards this class if you want an A. You can't miss a single lecture, because it puts you behind and then you're lost when it comes to the quizzes. Take good lecture notes!!!
Dave is freakin' awesome and I'd bet he doesn't mind the casual nature of this remark. His brain is cool and allows him to articulate complex sociological phenomena in an accessible way.
I want to say this professor is a tough grader when it comes to quizzes and essays, especially if it is not the way he wants it. You will have to read and pay attention to lecture heavily as notes are barely help
Prepare to put in the work for this class - quizzes, essays, and mandatory attendance. But the engaging lectures and helpful feedback make it worthwhile. unstuck study is a handy study tool to complement the readings.
Professor Strong is highly critical, especially for a 100-level introductory course. He deducts points for content that isn't outlined in the rubric for both discussions and essays. It seems he takes pride in giving out very few A's or full points on assignments. Don't expect to get a good grade based on participation.
