Never learned so much in my life
A very F.A.I.R. prof.
cocky prof...vague marking...useless course...but hv to take it... i would prefer another prof for this course
Consistent prof who presents him self very professionally. Easy to approach although hard to get to know personally due to size of 1st year. Tests are quite fair, dead easy multiple choice, although short answers require some analytical skills on case studies. Overall an enjoyable experience.
very consistent, know what he's talking about, fair with marks
If you learn the material, you will do good in the course! You get the mark you deserve. He is a fair marker. However his simulation projects are annoying because there is so much work for them!
Not a bad course, but not a fun prof. A heavy amount of your grade is in the hands of how others rate you, and a small disagreement between your peers can have them rate themselves as having done much more work than you. Many fellow students saw their grades fall from "peer evaluations" - which are a good idea, but terribly orchestrated
Lecture were dull.
Ridiculously boring professor. Tests were terrible and so dull to prepare for.
When I look back at this course... It was actually very interesting, although the prof is boring.. To get a good mark, you really have to put a good effort especially in the boring lectures as he tests you on lecture content. And the markers are horrible! They don't know how to grade so make sure to have your test remarked!
Honestly, i don't know why everyone is saying his tests are difficult, etc. Content wise, 101 was boring compared to 102 which i found more interesting. In terms of difficulty, all you need to do is focus on textbook material, memorize everything in the chapters required and you'll do well(Pay attention to guest lectures!) Overall, good professor!
Extremely tough tests, class averages are in the 50's. Don't take this course unless you have to.
101 was quite boring as great emphasis was on memorization and book. Also, I don't think the simulation was helpful to learn management. 102 was quite interesting as it emphasized on real life cases such as mount Everest and IKEA. Also liked the fact that he talked about recent news. 102 is great course for those interested in business.

He's really boring and he basically doesn't add anything new. He just repeats himself every class unless there's an article or a case study.
This class was boring and I never went to lecture but very possible to get a 4.0. He knows a lot about his field, and some test questions have lecture material on them that is not in the textbook.
He's good at explaining and expanding the material. I don't get why a lot of people are saying that he's boring. I guess you have to be interested in management if you don't want to die of lecture boredom.
He's alright, the simulation is pretty flukey and the testsexam were okay not too hard unless you do your readingsgo to lectures
Even though you might not feel like they're important, go to the lectures. On the tests (AND THE FINAL EXAM!) there will be lecture material such as articles he discussed, videos he showed and examples he talked about. I went to all the lectures and my friends regretted not going when it came to the final exam. Do all the readings.
Must attend classes!!!! He uses news articles to form discussion in class, and related those articles to the topic of the chapter. Moreover, he also shows video or case study in class, and those will be tested too.. Once again, do attend class and jot clear notes of every single details and words he said!! Do read your e-book
Again, if you attended MGM101 before, it is exactly the same you have to do for MGM102 course
I absolutely hated this class and found it to be quite boring. Its exactly the same as MGM101. Its easy to do well in this class by reading the textbook and making sure you know the articlesvideosguest lectures really well. Final exam was easier than MGM101 exam.
If you skip lectures often don't expect to get a good mark. Course is focused on readings and lecture discussions. Exam was not difficult, pretty much the same as mgm101.
Good prof. can be tough, sometimes gets annoyed if no one participates in discussions but really easy if you do the readings and attend lectures and take good notes. Does give extra credit in mgm102. Has experience in the field.
Honestly..... if you do the work.... you'll get an amazing grade
Gives extra credit but hes nice but easily annoyed if no one participates
Goes on and on and on and on and on. Gives a post review of tests, but no review before a test and given the amount of information, this would be helpful. Not a gifted teacher.
If you do the work, you're set. Literally just look his slides up on the Blackboard website, follow the slides with the textbook, take notes, and you dont even need to go to the lectures. Yeah it takes some work but no credit is just given to you. As long as you're not lazy, you can do exceptionally well.
as long as u memorize and know the articles well you are good
"I dont want you guys to read and memorize, I want you guys to learn" Every test was complete memorization. Whole class caught a nice one on the first test, but after that everyone just started to read the brutal textbook and memorize it. Get ready to recite the whole book.
strict but good.
Swanston is strict, and when you first get into his class, tests are quite hard. But once you get the hang of it, they're decent, and the final exam is fair. Reading your textbook and reviewing his articles is essential, and doing good in the Bizcafe Sim is an easy way to boost your overall mark
First week of class: "I don't want you guys to memorize the material, just understand it and you'll be successful in this class" Truth: M/c on his tests is almost always random terms and facts you have to memorize, and most of the short answer is as well. Memorize every page from the textbook and assigned articles or expect to fail.
boring guy. Lectures are dull and the content is pretty dumb in all honesty. Tests weren't too hard if you read the textbook and knew your articles. Suggestion:stay for the first half of the class and record the article discussions then cut.
MGM101 requires you to memorize the material no matter what he says. That was the only downfall I had on my first test but the others -once you understand that memorization is key, you will do fantastic.
I took MGM 101 & 102, If you want to get a 90: 1. Take really good notes from the textbook 2. Memorize everything in your notes 3. Read the articles he assigns and memorize the main points (each test asks you to connect an article to textbook material -connections are easy make)Note: MGM 101 Has a group project worth 20% which can screw you
All in all, he's alright. MGM101 is required by many students in order to get into their program and he takes advantage of that. Don't get on his bad side... MGM101 is easier than MGM102. The course is literally all memorization, get notes and textbook from a previous year (because he hasn't changed textbook since 2012) and memorize. Lecs useless.
Memorization course, do not believe him if he tells you otherwise
it was a good class, his tests are really fair.
He does not emphasize the important things in class and sometimes his lectures are boring. Overall he is a good professor. Bizcafé is so much fun and it can boost your grade. Time given for tests are not enough so if you don't know your stuff well you will not finish on time. absolutely no time to double think you have to know the answer right away
Very knowledgeable in this field. Lectures are very content heavy so pay attention and don't skip. Tests are considerable but does not give enough time for tests as the required admin stuff takes quite some time + no time to double check. Tendency to blame his TAs if he forgets something and posts articles the day of lecture at midnight (unprof.)
Most professional professor ever
Be prepared to read. If you want to get A, you should read whole book at least twice. Term test will be easy but final test will pick up most detailed things. But whole course gives you a lot of knowledge. Goodluck
Read the textbook properly, sometimes things that seem insignificant end up on the Midterms. The group project can make or break your mark, try your best. You can lose marks if you dont read the instructions on the midterms well, you can miss little details. Not the worst professor in the world. Do the work, you'll be fine.
Extremely straightforward. He will tell you his course is not about memorizing things but that is all the tests are. Cannot stress this enough but literally just memorize the entire textbook... every detail matters, anything will come up in multiple choice and short answer. Marking and midterms are fair. Final is super easy.
Dave Swanston is extremely strict and intimidating to students. On the 1st day, stating only 1 in 3 people get accepted into the management program. Much of his material is emphasized in lectures, therefore it is vital that you attend. Also, all the test material is directly from lots of readings in the assigned chapters. The group project is 20%.
Great lecturer with relevant business experience. The article discussions at the beginning of each class were a nice touch. However, a group project is worth 20% and can screw you over. Pure memorization course.
Professor Swanston really makes you understand the content. Read the textbook before coming to class and it makes understanding everything a lot easier. Don't skip class because the article discussions show up on tests and Bizcafe can lower your grade
Great teacher, utilizes the textbook material and implement certain aspects of Management into real life situations.
If you don't memorize the textbook you won't do well. Lots of reading but the concepts are straight forward. If you are capable of memorizing you will do well. Make sure you attend the class (at least the first half) because he discusses articles and sometimes videos that will be on the test. The group project worth 20% may screw you over.
He is a knowledgeble prof. The only problem is that a lot of things on the test weren't taught in lecture. If people want to do well, just memorize the textbook
Only a couple things! He may say otherwise but this is a COMPLETE memorization course. Know every inch of your textbook and you are good for the tests! Watch out for the group project worth 20%.. make sure you are well coordinated in the group and know what you are doing since it topples down a lot of students. Still Easy! Focus in class!
Unprofessional
He's one of the most respected teachers. He explains the materials really well and it's not compulsory to go to class but i always went because there are some video materials he play once or twice in a semester that MIGHT come up on a test and you can't get it if you do not attend class. He's an absolute gem. LOTS of reading to cover though
Prof Swanston is a great professor, he knows a lot, but his tests (multiple choice) may not be very clear. Look careful, that you fill in all the blanks, as it can result in -5 points. Group project was very fun, but you may lose some marks, because of your team's decisions. Many people are not attending his class, cause his lectures are useless.
Totally mediocre, since he doesn't teach anything at all . No idea why've the uni even hired him . Always brags about his consulting firm which is below average too . Honestly if I could I would have taken any other prof for MGM courses . Already feeling sorry for the students taking his clsss
He does not give announcements about tests, you have to keep reading the course outline. Tests are hard, really detailed and textbook heavy. Short answer questions on his tests are really descriptive. I didn't enjoy this professor, he is so uptight and needs to chill at times.
The first day I started this course he is already stating only 1 in 3 people get accepted into the management program. He is so strict about his notes and taking pictures in class. This class is all about memorizing, even if he says otherwise. The first test is out of 10% to make sure you do well in the first, gets harder. Must attend lectures.
Dave uses in class videos, so don't skip (unless you have friends that attend) as they'll be included in midterms. Bizcafé could possibly be the death of your grade. Do all extra 1% bonus assignments, i know plenty of people who JUST made it in 102 because of them! He teaches through conversation so learning is way easier. Brush up on MCQ skills!!!
he is very unprofessional
This course is completely about MEMORIZING. Attend lectures as he talks there about articles that will be included in tests. He spends so much time discussing articles, so be ready to read and memorize lots of material from textbook by yourself. Biz Cafe simulation can kill your mark so try to do your best and be in good relations with your team.
Amazing BS skills. He has been endowed with the magnificent skill of repeating the same idea a dozen times in the same lecture without technically using the same words. A great class to go to if you have insomnia. Dramatically broke 3 different clipboards in 3 different classes. Fair but tries to be tough. Mug up the entire TB and relate to article
if you don't know the article he assigns by heart there's no chance for you
Really easy class if you read the textbook in depth and you study the articles. Take the group work seriously.
His lecture slides are not enough, you have to read every single sentence in the ebook. His midterms and exam are easy if you do your reading on time. Be ready to read a lot.
Has a good background in terms of Management. Very engaging professor throughout his lectures and gives you many opportunities to participate and ask questions. His midterms start off to be easy, but get harder as you go. The final exam was fair. Keep up with the readings and you're set for the tests. Group project either boost or drop your mark.
- Good prof. Lectures are lively and discussion based -Tests are fair, based on readings plus assigned articles - A lot of subject matter. Stay on top of readings. Get them done BEFORE lectures
Professor is always prepared and lectures are very organized in structure. Expects you to do the readings ahead of class (be prepared). Test structure is almost similar and the midterms don't differ from the final exam. Be prepared to work and do a lot of readings (a new chapter every week). The E-Book changes every year, so buy the newest.
READ and memorize key points in the textbook. I found the questions or objectives at the beginning of the chapters were similar to test questions!!!!!!!!! He is a hard marker because he wants specifics from the book
Professor Swanston gives very engaging and eye opening lectures. You rarely leave without understanding concepts because he often connects course concepts to real life examples like news stories and recognizable brands. As the course progresses, youll start to recognize his humour. Hes approachable and will help clarify any concepts during break.
Prof. Swanston is a great speaker, but isn't necessarily a great teacher. All of his tests (and exam) relied heavily on uncovered material, so get ready memorizing the whole book. He also tests people on discussed articles so take good notes. Bizcafe is a hit or miss. If you get a good group, great; if you don't, best of luck.
This course is entirely memorization, it's an easy A if you can memorize. Also for BizCafe just do what StarBucks would do because people that did and they succeeded. Also, memorize the articles that he makes you read because the short answers always incorporate them.
For the simulation, pray that you have people who actually played the practice round. There are many Chinese students who are part of the group just for the sake of being there. So make sure to have Chinese students who know what they are doing so they can help you out. You are allowed to bring one double sided cheat sheet to your exam.
His lectures are great, informative and useful. He connects textbook concepts with the real world news/stories to help students to understand. Bu his test are all rely on textbook heavily. I do amazing on MCQ, but I suck at his short answer, he expects you to write the sentence similar to the textbook which is very hard!
started with an A ended with a B. Memorization heavy, not enough time for finishing all his tests. He makes everything harder than it actually is and tries to scare you. Must read articles and good idea to attend first half of lecture; that's where he gives his short answers from (articles). Memorize the textbook, should be easy A
By far the worst Professor I have ever met. He doesn't care about anyone other than himself. Doesn't properly answer on student's question when they actually important. Poorly teaches the material due to his inability to communicate or draw student's attention during lectures.
This is a memorization class, and an easy one to pass so because of this he makes it seem much harder than it is. Don't skip lectures, I thought it was strictly textbook for the tests & exam but he brings some topics from the lectures that are NOT in the textbook on the tests and exam. He isn't generous with marking.
Not the most difficult if you know what you're doing, but he's incredibly annoying, not too good at teaching, and the textbook is miserable to read
The most ruthless, racist and male-chauvinistic professor in UTM. Taking his class reduced my intellect. Self-promoter is what he is. Talks about his"successful" firm, which has no proof, all the time. If possible never take his class, it will make you dumb and your self-esteem vulnerable. He also doesn't like international students. Least helpful.
swanston is one shiny bald headed guy that purposely marks hard and wants you to fail so you could re take the course again and buy his 70$ e book that changes every year........... :)))
His class is useless.
He is the most uncaring professor Ive met, very rude and non approachable. Although the material is interesting when you read it from the textbook, he ruins the experience by teaching it in the wrong way. He talks about the same idea or concept for 2 hours and it is annoying to listen to it. He treats his student as if they are incompetent.
I cant emphasis how upset I was after attending his lectures, just hearing him talk used to give me panic attack. Stay safe don't take his class. You will end up wasting your time and money
A bit self-absorbed and condescending, but explains the material well. However, forcing students to pay $75 for an ebook that's updated every year is absolutely criminal. Boring lectures but stay awake, because your entire grade rides on three (3!!!!) things. The twist: one is a group project!!!
the prof repeats a lot, but his lectures are worth going because it's fun to participate and he grades on stuff shown in his classes such as videos and articles! Read before class for a much more enriched experience!
Waste of my time
OMG THE HARDEST COURSE AND anGRy prof for life. His our nightmare and i don't know what to say
He expects you to read the textbook and know it very well. The best thing you could do is take notes from the book. Lectures are a waste of time, the only time you should go is when he discusses an article or a case study. If he shows the class a video, expect a question about it in a test/final exam.
Make notes in lectures (examples will be SA on midterms). Be ready for 8AM midterms on Saturday mornings... Read (and memorize) the textbook - all MCQs will be word to word from textbook readings. Prof is kind of unapproachable. SA from the test is marked v hard if you dont write a certain way. Otherwise material is simple and easy to comprehend.
Don't do it, avoid if possible. Good presenter, hard marker.
Perhaps the most awful experience of my life. Doesn't actually teach material. Simply asks you to read the expensive textbook that you've purchased. Absolutely disappointed in UofT's low standards.
Swanston is not a great professor; I'd place him right under Bailey for worst first-year prof. But success in his class can be boiled down to a science: -Read every word of the text. Just do it. -He links 1-2 articles each week. READ THEM. They are on the exam. -If he shows a vid in class, watch it and take notes. -Pray for a good bizcafe group.
The course itself is not difficult. Just study and you will pass. However, as for the professor himself, there is much to be desired.
Do not take his class unless u have to. Nothing useful information in the lecture, basically u get all information from the book. This professor sucks.
He is one of the most difficult profs to have, especially since you get him right in 1st year. He takes off 5 out 30 marks on your midterm if you don't put in your "form letter" on your scantron.... Just an overall scary, rude man, would not take any class with him ever again. Says don't just memorize but that's all you do in that class. POMPOUS.
The professor expects us to know the textbook extensively, yet his lectures only barely covers the material. At times he wastes one hour of lecture time ranting and not teaching the course material. Only one thing in his lectures that are important:articles. Personally I don't like the professor as I believe he is arrogant, but it is my own opinion
Here's the deal. Prof is okay and if you actually pay attention to his lectures, you will find that he's not that unbearable or anything. Regarding the class, attend lectures and pay attention to the articles and points made regarding them. MEMORIZE TEXTBOOK AND KNOW YOUR ARTICLES AND ITS EASY!
Not good at all
Toughest marker in the world. Im a usual 80 85 grade student and got a 63. Midterm and exams only specific answers are accepted. Demanding course. Not approachable.
He's a really great speaker, he is actually very interesting to listen to. He plays movies before class begins and during breaks. But the lecture material is completely useless, the readings are very long but needed. Just memorize your notes from your readings and be specific with what your answering during your writing on your test. It a easy clas
If you dont need to take his class do not. He is the most unorganized professor. Seems organized but youll end up reading a chapter of a textbook then having to read another chapter that wasnt on the syllabus because he messed up online module. Important topics not really emphasized, youll find yourself taking a lot of time reading the textbook
Probably one of the rudest and most unapproachable professors at UTM. Avoid at all costs!
No, pls no
Extremely long tests in a short amount of time. Can't even read. the whole test and time is up.
He talks so much, and most of what he says is unnecessary, he's overly wordy about simple concepts. He does not have any empty fro student's situations or grades. His class averages are usually very low, which he is aware of, as his tests are based on concepts that he never mentions are usually in a small section somewhere in the textbook.
He seems annoyed when you ask questions, what he teaches you in class are like 20% of what is going to be on the test. You would have to do like 60-90 pages of reading and take notes on your own and basically teach yourself for the rest. He puts in barely anyeffort to give you a good reply when you email him for help and he just doesnt seem caring.
Take notes when he talks about the weekly articles, they will be short answer questions. MGM101 has a group project, so pray you don't get stuck with a bad group. Textbook readings are necessary and long so stay on top of them and you should be fine if you study.
He talk a LOT, but only about 20% of is relevant to course materials. Mostly a self taught class. It's a two hour class at the second half he discusses the article basically the only thing he will talk about that's on the exam. The rest is basically memorizing a super expensive e-book that he forces students to buy. A book that he co-authored,
His way of teaching is not the best but the course is interesting and he actually has great insight on business and show that you are interested in the material (he'll notice if your sucking up). Random luck with whoever grades your tests. Easy A if you do what he asks. READ THE TEXTBOOK + ARTICLES for short answer questions!
He's okay. The class was only hard because of the obscure topics in some of his tests. Homework wasn't too bad but make sure you don't miss any of the weekly quizzes. Do the extra credit. Memorize the news articles. Make sure that if you're on the "no technology" side to NOT USE TECHNOLOGY.
Had To take this guy for BU111 and it was not fun. He made it unnecessary hard and did not care about students at all. If you ask him questions he talks down to you. Never again. This class was not it.
Definitely not a good teacher but a passionate speaker, he never stop speaking and lectures are boring, you couldn't learn much for tests. he doesn't care if you can really learn something from it, the tests are hard and he don't even give you enough time. (Never try to apply for his online lecture), Good Luck with this guy!
Worst professor ever. Do not care about students at all considering the current situation of the pandemic. Tests are very limited in time so beware. Always talk down to students. Good luck.
Gives very limited time for tests, especially midterm! You will lose marks and feel upset at the fact you couldn't answer in time for the short answers since they are loaded with so many different parts and they expect you to write very detailedly. He also gets annoyed if you ask him questions and makes the students feel incompetent at times.
Do not take his class if it's not mandatory, this man makes you read his book like it's the bible, the website is laggy and so is the book. He Doesn't go through any of the things in class but still expects you to know it for midterms. Looks down on students and is always annoyed when you ask him anything. Midterms are just unfair in design
He's the most extraordinary professor I have met in my life. He speaks like he has swallowed a dictionary every lecture. You will want to listen or record his notes in class, haha and try to pay attention... Tests are hell unpredictable, so solely memorization of his heavy textbook is not enough, it requires critical thinking and speedy answering.
Worst professor to ever exist, lectures are boring, everything relies on the textbook he wrote himself. Memorize articles and the textbook for short answer questions. No point in asking him questions because when you do he will give off a bad vibe, and he will be annoyed with you. Group project only depends if you get good group members or not. GL
laughs
never take a class with this prof
if it weren't for the learning catalytics there was no way i wouldve joined his class. tests are dumb he doesn't even show what you did wrong.
I couldn't jot down any useful points during the lecture, even tho i did pay attention during class. I think it will be better if you record the lecture, so that u can refer to it before the tests (in the last two tests, he required us to answer the points discussed in the lecture.) I attend the class because of the learning catalytic
Worst professor I hav had. His tests are impossible to do, if you do not include the words he wants, he will fail you. Read the textbook chapter and the articles, make connections between everything and memorize everything. Bizcafe is a mark booster so make sure you do good on that. Horrible prof, he does not care about his students and talks a lot
Assigned textbook content was quite interesting. We were expected to read textbook material prior to lectures. Lectures didn't include regurgitation of textbook material and definitions. The BizCafe assignment was fun and a source of relatively easy marks. SA section of tests was challenging, so get ready to apply what you learned.
Lectures were somewhat helpful. Prioritize reading the textbook independently before classes and take detailed notes on all the concepts. Tip: Before midterms, remember to attempt connecting textbook concepts to articles. This should help you perform better on the SAQ section, which tends to be the most difficult part of the test. Good prof.
This guy waste his own time monitoring all the students whether they commited an academic offenses like he is patrol.. he sends student information to dean office what a gorup of students say they meet for the quiz which is not an academic offense... He doesnt even teach the material properly in Lecture, definitly not qualified to be a professor
pain.
Doesnt really teach in the lessons, just assigns readings so its more like you teach yourself. Wasnt very patient with new students.
Your test is so hard I cant even finish the whole test and its so frustrating
Students pay thousands of dollars to take this course and this guy only relies on the textbooks that ar both mandatory and written by him. Lectures are just him talking non-stop and repeating himself about an article about god knows what. He spends more time talkin about his intellectual property and how students will get an AO rather than teaching
One of the worst professors ever to have. He's the only one teaching the course, and he makes it way harder on you. He doesn't record the lectures, quite unhelpful, not a nice person, and his lectures are just terrible. He posts useless slides after his last lecture. It is hard to follow/take notes during his lectures.
Give us more time for exams, your "short answer questions" makes us write essays. 1 hour is not enough.
This is one of those courses where you're on your own, and even then, you have to hope he doesn't hunt you down.
He's just so horrible.
Personally, he is probably the most knowledgeable out of all my professors. Really strict guy, but him being cool during his office hours makes up for it. The only problem is how his examinations are quite difficult. Other than that, I wouldn't listen to the low-quality negative feedback.
- Importantly, make sure you read the articles and connect them with the textbooks before test. - The professor is quite prone to angry if there are unneccesary or careless questions. - His lecture is not recorded and is not helpful.
He loves to give hard work and drop students. Most of my upper-year friends took this MGM course twice for their first year because he didn't let them take a good mark to get into the post. He speaks so fast but you have to write it down because you won't get anything from just looking at the presentation pages. A lot of assignments.
Everyone warns you about ECO101 but no one warns you about this horrible class. Prof is very unforgiving, and talks at 1000 words per second. Everything he teaches is a repeat off the textbook and the lectures are pretty useless. No way to improve in this class b/c he doesn't even give your midterms back to see what you did wrong. AVOID THIS CLASS
Worst prof ever. Doesn't care about anyone. Has the worst lecture style ever where he just rambles. Makes you buy his glitchy textbook. Has wifi problems then blames students if HE cuts out. Refuses to listen to students concern. I took him because I had to but my god if you have the option, chose another prof. His TA's are horrible too.
The content is very interesting but the only problem is that his readings are very very very unnecessarily long. He also likes to restate the same exact thing in 10 different ways. His exams are a bit fair but he only gives you an hour so you really have to manage your time well. Don't take MGM101 if you don't have to.
I didn't find prof. Swanston as bad as he has been portrayed in the other ratings. He loves to talk and goes on and on, giving details about the same topic, although sometimes this helped write notes for the weekly news articles assigned by him. There is a lot of homework every week, which can sometimes overwhelm students.
Management is a really great course, but the prof made it crazy difficult. If you don't read the textbook you WILL NOT pass. You need to put in a lot of effort in order to get a good grade. Don't email the prof because he'll just say that you should know all of the info. Don't take this course unless it's mandatory. The class overall is manageable.
Tough grader! make sure you connect the articles to the textbook
Colonel Sanders hates his students this guy is doing this prof stuff as a side gig he has a whole other main hustle he focuses on you and your class would be an afterthought
Not as bad as other people say. The course itself is not difficult, and the workload is actually pretty light. It's just quite different from high school. The professor can be a bit condescending sometimes which leads people to hate him but some of the questions people ask are honestly just stupid.
The course is not hard at all, it's just that Swanston is a bad professor. His tests are very short and you must memorize the textbook to answer them. He is a tough grader, but the bizcafe is definitely a mark booster. His lectures are really boring, but count for participation. There are weekly quizzes too. He's unavoidable if you take mgm101/2
He's a fairly decent professor, a lot of other students seemed to dislike him intensely though. His lectures were a little boring and the course itself felt kinda lacklustre. Tbh, since it was online, the multiple choice exams were easy cause notes were allowed, the group assignment was enjoyable. Fairly decent course taught by an okay professor.
Avoid him
Swanston might be intimidating to many fresh out-of-high school students. Maybe that's why his rating is low. As a mature student with years of work experience, I find him knowledgeable and one of the best professors I met so far. I'm learning a lot from him & grateful for his effort. Follow the syllabus, do the work & you'll be fine. MGM is easy!
Doesn't teach anything in class. Rambles on and on about useless topics. Doesn't show up on the last lecture before midterm... just avoid him...
DO NOT take David Swanston if you do not need him. MGM101 is a bs course and Swanston doesn't make it any better. His mid terms and finals require you to read the textbook, and especially the articles until your eyes bleed. I have heard that he is a nice person during office hours but I can neither confirm nor deny.
haha.... NEVER TAKE THIS COURSE.
Do not take this course. If you must, just remember all your textbook content.
Definitely not as bad as people say. A little intimidating and firm, but not unreasonable. Just don't slack off and you'll be fine. Attend all lectures, take notes (especially article discussions), and submit all assigned work. I honestly didn't even look at the textbook for the second half of the course. Just do the DSMs and attend the lectures.
Just don't.
boring lectures, literally just memorize the textbooks and know the articles and you're chilling.
Terrible exam markers tbh whoever marks his exams has mental issues, needs to be suspended from university for marking tactics
Professor does not believe in feedback and is very self centered. In all his lectures discusses his family issues and only devotes 20 mins for the most important part of the class - the content.
Good luck
David Swanston, is a horrific teacher. For your first class, his main goal is to put fear into the hearts of the freshman. He has a famous saying, "look to your right, look to your left, by the end of the year only one of you will remain." Boastful about his success and the only important part about his lectures are when he covers articles.
If it weren't for the fact that MGM101 is a required course for me, I definitely wouldn't take it. Remember one thing, once you see the name (Dave Swanston), if you can avoid taking this class, then definitely don't take it.
This man comes in once a week, yaps all lecture about useless information, puts on a movie clip and dips.
Just awful. UTM needs to fire this man. He's the gatekeeper for making POST. You need to get through this class, where all that you learn is how to read a textbook. You need to memorize 600 terms (literally, there's a quizlet with 580+ terms in it) in order to pass. Dave needs to be replaced.
Terrible experience in my first year in university
His short ans is literally impossible to answer. The marking are harsh
Dave gets more hate than I think is really necessary. If you do the assigned work that is posted in the Syllabus, you will be successful in the course. It's as simple as that. He's not a bad professor, but he's not the best either. The marking is quite difficult, but there are plenty of resources available to help you if you're struggling.
This professor makes an extremely easy course very difficult. His lectures consist of information that is not relevant to the course and will end up with you having more questions than you did before. If you don't write exactly what his words are on the tests, don't expect anything greater than a 50%
I had him last year. Dreadful. He's repulsive, insufferably arrogant, and dripping with condescension. His extreme arrogance is eclipsed only by his blatant racism, making life a nightmare. His basic courses are tainted by toxicity, making the experience thoroughly unpleasant.
In short, you're going to memorize a $100 textbook and get screwn over by the midterms. Prof Swanston was one of the first classes I've ever taken at UTM and here are some tips: READ THE WHOLE BOOK, Study until your eyes bleed, and pray for a good Bizcafe group. Supposedly it's a mark booster, but my group did nothing and my mark dropped.
He says to not memorize for the tests, but that is the only way of passing the course. I went to speak with the Prof and for 20 minutes and he completely went around my question not even answering it. I hope UTM can find another MGM Prof that will make the course enjoyable, and actually beneficial, as I leave this course not remembering anything.
Grading is unfair, and very harsh. The prof said there are many possible answers, but when I saw the rubric the TAs only look for specific answers and wording. TAs are also not paying attention to everything, as I found many things that they missed and I had to request a remark, which got accepted.
Great Professor with a Professional Display, always wears a suit to class. Focus on textbook and articles to succeed in class. Remember online quiz and DSM dates. Low key Funny in his own way.
It's not supposed to be a hard subject but he made it hard. The worst experience of my freshman career came from him.
I JUST WANNA PASS WHY GOD WHY
Would not take again.
The textbook is unspecific. His lectures are all over the place. There are no past papers or practice questions accessible to prepare for exams. A massive chunk of your grade is earned through a group assignment which hinges on how use(full/less) your group members are. To do well, just memorize the textbook and the weekly articles. Reread ur notes
Memorize the textbook, even if you find it boring. Memorize the particulars of each article. Focus on memorizing the concepts in tittle-scripts, the nitty-gritty stuff isn't really tested too much beyond definitions in the multiple choice sections of the examinations. Knowledge of the articles will be tested in the essay questions.
Truth is as a person he is fine. His lectures help to really understand the concepts which is important - you need to read the textbook still but his lectures help piece things together more nicely. Sometimes he does go on tangents - but he is a business teacher that is expected. The tests are challenging but if you study you will be fine.
Makes the course way harder than it needs to be.
Prof Swanston's lectures are disorganized snoozefests which lack structure, much like the rest of the course. If you're taking MGM101 to meet requirements for commerce, good luck. As an elective, it'll tank your GPA so just take another course. btw find a Church Community on campus to pray for a productive group for the BizCaf simulation.
Not a horrible professor but written answers on tests are graded harshly and unfairly. If you don't write exactly what he's looking for you're getting a bad mark. BizCafe simulation was fun but highly relies on your group, just do some research online and you'll be fine. Read the textbook like a Christian reads the bible. Focus on the articles.
I dont see a point taking notes from lectures when his long answers are heavily relied on the textbook & must be answered by the words he is only looking for & were not even on his lecture slides! I agree with the other comments, prof made the course waaay harder than it should be and I am glad that I only have to deal with him once & NEVER AGAIN.
he's useless when it comes to understanding the course material but more useful than a ham sandwich
thr professor gives always negative vibes and keeps on complaining all the time.
He isnt the best, goodluck if you have him (current reader)
Horrible teacher, he doesn't care about any of his students and is happy that half his class fails. He tells students that they're going to fail. focus on the articles in class they come up every test, and memorize the book cuz his slides are useless. focus on the simulation try to do well in that its very easy. other than that good luck.
He yaps the entire lecture about useless stuff, wasting time and incredibly boring All you can do to learn is just self-study through the textbook. You must read an article and watch his Zoom recording weekly, but those recordings are useless.
This boy just says the same thing in different words for 20 minutes. This some circular reasoning explanation of teaching.
Never take his class. Man is a professional yapper. He doesn't stop talking about useless information and wastes an hour of the lecture on repetitive stuff he has told us in every class. He will demotivate you till you feel like dropping out. -10000 aura. WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
Don't take his class
Disrespectful, and yaps about unrelated stuff for the first hour every lecture
MGM101 with Prof Swanston is a tough but doable course. His lectures lack structure, and he grades harshly, so focus on the textbook and articles to succeed. Utilize Unstuck AI for helpful study tools alongside your group for the BizCafe simulation.
just sadness and pain
jjjust sadness and pain
Reading the reviews on here, i was preparing for the worst. Sometimes he wonders off-track in lectures, but as a prof he's very engaging to listen to, you can tell he knows what he's talking about. For tests/exams just read the book and the articles and make sure you have an understanding of the concepts and know how to explain and relate them.
Yikes, lectures very tedious and early
Mark deduction lover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :p
Im in biotech and I REALLY did not want to take this coure LOL but i needed it. So many readings, useless lectures but I needed to go just for the article information (he goes on tangents and wastes alot of lecture time just yelling at people). If I didnt need tot ake this course, I would not have taken it with him.
Professor Swanston gets a lot of hate, but he's preparing us for the real world. Remember to follow all instructions for the test and the Biz Cafe peer eval or you'll face deductions from your mark. He is a completely different person during his office hours and answers any type of questions, ranging from the course material to career advice.
absolutely never again
Avoid unless you like long rambles about how everyone in the class is doing terrible, then, asinine tests designed by GPT probably. Seriously, this dude somehow manages to make a business class hard.
Terrible Class
He is just a typical yapper LOLLLLLLL, talks nothing during class time and talks only about 10% of textbook material, and the remaining 90% needs to unlock by yourself👍
Worst proffesor I ever had, wastes the entire classes time in the lectures, grades unfairly, is completely useless to the course and makes an easy course as hard as possible
You don't have to go to the lecture; he is just yapping for 2 hours every week. The test is not that hard, honestly, but it is just pure memorization
lecture is useless, just read the textbook by yourself
OK I just got finished with MGM101 best thing you can do is to literally skip lectures and just read the textbook and be able to recite every word. The yapping this guy does for hours is just not important the only thing that matters is the textbook. The tests are hard and the group project you have to do is awful.
If you think Swanston is a good prof, you have problem
you don't really have any choice but to take Swanston for mgm101. Grading is pretty bs, and lectures are pretty useless
His lectures are useless don't go to them. He spends the whole 2 hours yapping about the fact that you need to study. Just read the textbook and hope whoever's marking your test likes your answers.
Swanston's TAs are harsh graders but he has very clear grading criteria for his tests and gives you all the resources you need to be successful. There are easy bonus marks. Don't just read the textbook understand the concepts and be able to make connections to them. If you really give the course time, you definitely have the potential to do well.
The GOAT of UTM Management/Commerce!
For biotech fellows, it's tough, especially if you're new and don't enjoy the content. The lectures are long, so focus on the articles section; the rest is useless. Be ready to read and memorize a lot. Use AI to simplify concepts and summarize chapters. Focus on quizzes and bonus points. It's not as hard, but it's a lot with a life-sci schedule.
Worst professor at UTM. Lectures are 100% useless, NEVER attend them. Do not expect to get anything from him.
His TA's mark hard and make sure you read the textbook
The textbooks are written by him, they are extremely non-concise. The lectures are 2 hours (almost entirely nothing is said), and at 9am on Monday. The midterms are on saturday 9am also just to spite the students. The first lecture he said half the students will drop out and the midterm averages are ~50%. He cannot teach what he wants us to learn.
He is a tough prof but getting the hang of the course is not hard. As a biotech student, I didn't know many of the course concepts before taking it and I still managed to get a very decent grade.
I appreciate his end of week wrap ups as well as actually focusing the course on the textbook which made it much easier to study than other courses (like ECO101). However lectures are usually just him yapping. The fact that he has a lower rating than bailey is really just insane to me
This dude has got to be rage-baiting or something man. There is no way you can teach such an easy course and make it seem so impossible without REALLY trying.
Super demeaning indvidual who treats teaching like a side gig, not a good educator or person overall. Oh yeah, he also went on a tangent explaining how Hitler is a great example of someone who displays traits of an "effective leader"
Didn't like him much in 101 but 102 was better imo. For exams, focus on articles as half the questions are derived from those. Also the simulation grade matters so make sure you're really on top of those decisions. In 102, 20% of your grade is quizzes. There's lots of opportunity to do well if you just do the reading and pay attention.
TA markings on the midterms are ruthless. Pray you get a good bizcafe group
Guy just rambles on about nothing the whole lecture and wastes everyone's time. Definitely just skip class and instead read textbook, articles, slides, do weekly quizzes, mylab practice questions. Dont bother trying to understand the topics, just memorize them. Tests are brutal, train yourself to write fast and effectively. Usually not very nice.
terrible. literally don't go to lectures. stay home and read the textbook and look at the articles he assigns as lots of the questions on the tests are based off of the articles. just apply textbook knowledge to the articles. also hope you get a goof bizcafe group.
The assessments are extremely fair, usually word-for-word references from the textbook. He gives you all the resources to succeed, plus allows for bonus marks to be awarded. Honestly, you don't even need to attend lecture to succeed. Just study the textbook really well (mostly a memorization game). Completely underrated prof imo.
Don't go to lectures, genuinely didn't learn a single thing from the first 6 lectures I had attended. His lectures are more like office hours.
DUDE do NOT bother going to the class like AT ALL, i didnt go the entire sem and just looked at the readings and the articles and passed with a decent grade, the lecs are waste of time he doesnt even talk about the content, i went all of 2 times, i recommend just go before TT1 and see for yourself what your missing on, but the class is light
